BlackBerry, the phone maker formerly known as Research in Motion, has a lot riding on the Z10. It’s the debut handset for the long-delayed BlackBerry 10, the operating system that the company hopes will mark the beginning of a turnaround after years of losing ground to Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android platforms.
BlackBerry phones are known more for their polished messaging system than their photographic prowess, but on paper the Z10 ticks most of the boxes you’d expect of a high-end phone in 2013: 8-megapixel sensor, fast F2.2 lens, and a high pixel-density display. We put the Z10 camera through its paces: read on to find if it’s worthy of a phone that’s clearly the result of a lot of effort from BlackBerry.
We’ve considered every aspect of the BlackBerry Z10 camera, with the photographer in mind. We examined the user interface of the native camera app and its special features. We experimented with the camera’s performance when taking stills and video, and had a play with new features like Time Shift and Story Maker.
