Well, this way it works with any camera. If you want it to be a client for an existing Wi-Fi network, you need more extensive configuration options in the camera menu.
Besides, if the main goal is to transfer stuff onto your smartphone or tablet, this way is the better one, since the other way around would also mean you would create a temporary mobile Wi-Fi hotspot from your phone or tablet – so it’s just in reverse, and more tedious.
