As new M1-equipped Macs arrive to early adopters this week, Adobe has released a beta ARM version of Photoshop. The beta allows owners of the Microsoft Surface Pro X and M1-powered Macs to run Photoshop natively. The current public release version of Photoshop runs emulated on both Windows and macOS. Looking at the beta version of Photoshop for Apple Silicon, there are missing features, but Adobe states that many core features are fully operational. The beta will only run on Apple hardware using the M1 chip, so the M1-equipped MacBook Air, 13″ MacBook Pro and Mac mini. M1-equipped...

I don’t think I have followed any camera manufacturer ‘s roadmap like you mentioned. In fact, I have gone back to film and I don’t buy new digital gear anymore. I only care for something that has historic value these days like a Contax rangefinder or a Rolleiflex TLR, or perhaps even a Nikon Df DSRL so that I could make use of those manual Zeiss glass that I have accumulated over time. As far as I am concern, new digital gear doesn’t excite me anymore. I am still partially shooting APS-C but with an older generation Sony mirrorless body. However, I am looking to sell...

Published Nov 17, 2020 | dpreview staff Olympus has announced a firmware update that will enhance the capabilities of its flagship E-M1X sports camera. Some of the features will be cascaded down to the E-M1 III, E-M1 II and E-M5 III. Exclusive to the E-M1X is ‘Bird detection AF’, which expands the camera’s AI-trained subject recognition system. Bird AF will focus on the eyes of birds, or their bodies if the eye isn’t visible. This subject-aware AF can be used in conjunction with the camera’s Pro Capture pre-buffering mode, to increase your chances of getting the...

Olympus has formally unveiled the M.Zuiko Digital ED 150-400mm F4.5 TC1.25x IS Pro, a high-end Micro Four Thirds telephoto zoom that was first teased as being under development in early 2019. It offers a built-in 1.25x teleconverter, boosting its 300-800mm equivalent range to a massive 375-1000mm equiv. reach. The lens features built-in IS rated to 4.5 stops, and when coupled with the 5-axis stabilized OM-D E-M1X can provide up to 8 stops of stabilization. The 150-400mm F4.5 measures just over 31cm (12.4″) in length and weighs ‘only’ 1.9kg (4.1lb). It includes 28 elements...

Olympus has announced the release of the OM-D E-M10 Mark IIIs. If you’re feeling a bit of deja vu, you aren’t alone. While the name looks familiar, you’ll note the addition of an ’s’ on the end compared to its predecessor, the OM-D E-M10 Mark III. Rather than beating around the bush, we’ll get straight to the point: the OM-D E-M10 Mark IIIs is the OM-D E-M10 Mark III with a new silent shooting mode and a new ‘Instant Film’ art filter mode. Aside from these two small updates, the camera is otherwise unchanged from its predecessor. Absolutely nothing, inside or out, has changed,...

It’s here! We’ve known that the Olympus 150-400mm F4.5 TC1.25x was coming for a long time, and mockups have been on display here and there at trade shows (remember those?) for a year or so, but now it’s official. Designed for professional and advanced amateur photographers, especially fans of wildlife and sports, the Olympus 150-400mm F4.5 TC1.25x is shaping up to be a seriously impressive lens for serious Micro Four Thirds shooters. Published Nov 17, 2020 | dpreview staff Olympus’ new 150-400mm F4.5 TC1.25x is one seriously-impressive piece of kit. Offering 1000mm equiv. of reach when using the built-in teleconverter, it’s a great option for wildlife photography. Handling-wise, we found it a bit lighter and smaller than its massive focal range suggests and the perfect companion for the twin-grip OM-D E-M1X. This is an initial sample gallery; we’ll update it again soon when we get a break from the pervasive Pacific Northwest rain. In the meantime, these should at least give you some idea of this...

Photos Members Group Since The Function of Technology on Obsolescence My Photo-stream says: I have mentioned that one can get some pretty low priced bodies of cameras that are quite ‘high end’ in terms of the technology incorporated in them at this time. But, this time may be fleeting and users may soon wake up to this missed opportunity. What makes cameras obsolete and then decline in value? Innovation. But, if APS-C sensor based DSLR’s are no longer being offered with innovations compared to those previously produced do those cameras which were previously produced...

Astrophotographer Jean-Luc Dauvergne spent six nights this fall capturing images of Mars. Dauvergne used the 1.06m telescope of Pic du Midi observatory in the French Pyrenees to capture his photos, which he has since used to create a global map of Mars. In addition to the six nights Dauvergne spent at the observatory, he told PetaPixel that it took him an additional 10 days to process the images. He says that Pic du Midi ‘is one of the best places in the world for planetary imaging.’ The 1m telescope has a 17,000mm focal length and was originally installed in 1963 to help NASA...

If you’re a little adventurous, I would point you towards getting a vintage manual-focus macro lens, which you can mount with the use of adapters. My suggestion would be Tamron’s Adaptall-2-series SP 90mm macro–I have the older f/2.5 version, which is 1:2 macro (1:1 with an extension tube), or there’s a newer f/2.8 version which goes to 1:1 with no tube. Sharp as a tack, and for macro you’re generally going to be focusing manually anyway (or setting a focus point and moving the camera or subject to focus) so you wouldn’t miss the autofocus much. I see some...

Sony: “The internal battery discharges gradually if the camera is only used for short periods of time. If the camera is not used at all for approximately 3 months, the internal battery becomes completely discharged.” And like for any older battery that time window shrinks over time. So I don’t care if I have to set date and time again (amongst other considerations). Since the clocks of my various cameras deviating quite fast from the real time I see it anyway necessary to adjust settings more often than I like. Adafruit has shared a project that allows you to build a camera around Adafruit’s own BrainCraft HAT system, which is itself an AI Machine Learning addition to the Raspberry Pi 4. Plus, it even tells you what it sees. As DIY Photography observes, the Raspberry Pi Machine Learning camera uses TensorFlow Lite object recognition software to figure out what it is looking at. Intro – the challenge Our ‘$20 film camera challenge’ is partly an acknowledgment that the universe is well-stocked with affordable analog cameras, and you don’t necessarily need to spend an arm and a leg on something trendy to get great shots. But it’s also a fun excuse to reassess the cool and often quirky camera designs of the not-too-distant past. The rules are simple: Find a film camera for under $20, shoot a roll or two with it, and describe the experience. Film and developing costs do not count toward the $20, otherwise you’d have no money left to...

Published Nov 10, 2020 | dpreview staff Leica has introduced the Q2 Monochrom, a black and white version of the Q2 – a team favorite here at DPReview. It features a designed-for-monochrome full-frame 47MP sensor that Leica claims should capture 2 additional stops of dynamic range over the Bayer version (13EV vs 11EV). The maximum ISO is 100,000, up from 50,000 on the Q2. The Q2 Monochrom uses the same stabilized 28mm F1.7 ASPH lens as the Q2. It shares the same 3.68MP OLED EVF and touchscreen display, as well. The Nikon 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR is a professional-grade super-telephoto zoom lens designed for sports and wildlife photographers. Both films belong to their ‘Kino’ line, which has been created from cine film stock produced by a German company. These monochromatic films offer some of the lowest ISO on the market at the moment. The slow speed means that they will produce negatives with very fine grain, but it also means it can be challenging to capture enough light for a proper exposure. The Nikon Z6 II and Z7 II are solid updates to the original Z6 and Z7 but neither represents a ‘new’ concept in the Z-series lineup. With the Z6 II and Z7 II, Nikon has modernized its high-end Z-series full-frame lineup, and made its offerings more competitive against midrange and high-end ILCs from Canon, Panasonic and Sony. While new to the market, neither Mark II model represents a new concept. This means that the gap which...

Nikon finally updated the lens with a lighter modern version in 2015, which triggered many owners to sell their 600mm lenses in order to upgrade to the latest and greatest “E” version. Today, one can purchase a used version of the 600mm f/4G VR at nearly half the price, which makes it a real bargain. In this review, we will take a closer look at this...

Adobe has announced Premiere Pro (version 14.5) will now natively support ProRes Raw, finally opening up editing of Apple’s Raw video format to all Premiere Pro users. With this new update, both macOS and Windows users will be able to edit ProRes Raw video regardless of what system or GPU your computer has packed inside. The initial support is limited, in the sense you aren’t offered full control of ISO and White Balance settings as you are with Apple’s Final Cut Pro X, but...

To rid the world of large notches, some companies have shrunk the front-facing to the size of a ‘hole punch’ design; others have managed to hide it almost entirely beneath the display. But electronics manufacturer Vivo is determined to take an entirely different approach, if its new Red Dot Award-winning IFEA concept smartphone is anything to go by. Based on the renderings provided by Vivo, this concept smartphone would feature...

Today Nikon announced its second-generation full-frame mirrorless camera bodies, the Nikon Z6 II and Z7 II. These are modest, but important updates that address many of the concerns from the first generation bodies. First of all, Nikon added a second memory card slot to both cameras, so you can now use an SD UHS-II memory card in addition to the existing CFexpress / XQD card. Second, both cameras now feature dual EXPEED 6 processors, which opens up a number of improvements that could not have been delivered via firmware updates on existing Z6 and Z7 cameras bodies. For example, both cameras...

Introduction Nikon has just announced the Z7 II, the second iteration of its high-resolution full-frame mirrorless camera. As the name implies, this is a refinement rather than a reimagining; so while the updates may not knock your socks off, we really enjoyed the original Z7 and this new model builds on an already successful formula. The Z7 II still has a 45.7MP full-frame BSI sensor, but it’s now backed up by dual processors compared to the single processor in its predecessor. The exterior of the camera is largely unchanged, which is fine by us – Nikon’s Z-series cameras have...

Nikon has updated its full-frame mirrorless Z series with two second-gen camera bodies: the Z6 II and Z7 II. Both will offer dual Expeed 6 processors to boost buffer performance and top continuous shooting speeds, and each camera gains a second UHS-II SD card slot to complement the existing CFexpress/XQD slot. They’re scheduled to arrive at the end of this year. With the additional processing power, the Z7 II can shoot at up to 10 fps (compared to 9 fps in the Z7) and the Z6 II shoots at up to 14 fps (up from 12 fps in the Z6). Each camera’s buffer capacity is improved...

Canon has just announced the EOS M50 Mark II, a relatively minor update to one of its most popular mirrorless models. The M50 Mark II shares the same 24MP APS-C sensor with its predecessor, and the same Digic 8 image processor. The Dual Pixel autofocus system has been updated to allow for eye tracking in both stills and video, and users can now capture vertical video and stream to YouTube Live over a smartphone internet connection. The rest of the camera’s specs are largely unchanged. Video tops out at 4K/24p with a heavy 1.5x crop, and autofocus in 4K is contrast-detect only. Full HD...

Canon’s new Speedlite EL-1 will sit on top of the company’s lineup of on-and-off-camera portable flashes. A command dial and joystick combine with a new menu layout to allow for faster manipulation of key settings for the user, and a very low minimum power rating helps set it apart from other options on the market. The EL-1 uses a new battery – the LP-EL – that allows for a 0.9-sec recycle time at full power, and a claimed 335 full-power flashes. Though the new battery can be charged via the LC-E6 charger that owners of Canon’s full-frame DSLR and mirrorless cameras likely...
