Canon has just announced the EOS M50 Mark II, a relatively minor update to one of its most popular mirrorless models. The M50 Mark II shares the same 24MP APS-C sensor with its predecessor, and the same Digic 8 image processor. The Dual Pixel autofocus system has been updated to allow for eye tracking in both stills and video, and users can now capture vertical video and stream to YouTube Live over a smartphone internet connection. The rest of the camera’s specs are largely unchanged. Video tops out at 4K/24p with a heavy 1.5x crop, and autofocus in 4K is contrast-detect only. Full HD...

Canon’s new Speedlite EL-1 will sit on top of the company’s lineup of on-and-off-camera portable flashes. A command dial and joystick combine with a new menu layout to allow for faster manipulation of key settings for the user, and a very low minimum power rating helps set it apart from other options on the market. The EL-1 uses a new battery – the LP-EL – that allows for a 0.9-sec recycle time at full power, and a claimed 335 full-power flashes. Though the new battery can be charged via the LC-E6 charger that owners of Canon’s full-frame DSLR and mirrorless cameras likely...

Moments after revealing its iPhone 12 devices at today’s virtual event, Apple showed off the next-generation of its flagship mobile devices, the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. The two new models are constructed of surgical-grade steel and use advanced physical vapor deposition (PVD) technology that results in a ’spectacular luster.’ Despite having effectively the same physical dimensions of their predecessors, the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max feature larger screens, 6.1” and 6.7”, respectively, as Apple has managed to further shrink the bezel. The new iPhone 12 Pro models are...

Panasonic’s Lumix DC-BGH1 is a new type of product for Panasonic: a box-style video camera that is designed to be as adaptable and flexible as possible. It’s built around an oversized Four Thirds sensor very similar to the one found in the GH5S, and the ‘GH’ in its name is designed to invoke that series of cameras, but the BGH1 expands far beyond those models in terms of what it can do. The idea is that it can be connected to a wide variety of other devices, depending on your needs. The expectation isn’t that anyone needs everything the camera offers, but...

Panasonic has announced a new Micro Four Thirds video camera, the Lumix DC-BGH1. This box-style camera is built around a 10.2MP Live MOS sensor. Based on specs, the BGH1 might appear to be essentially a Panasonic GH5S minus the screen and controls, and to some degree, it is. Still, Panasonic has included several features that are rather interesting. The aluminum and magnesium alloy body is relatively small, at 93mm per side and 78mm deep (3.66 x 3.07 inches). Notably, the camera lacks both a viewfinder and a screen but includes eleven 1/4″-20 sockets for mounting accessories or a...

Back in June, Panasonic released a half-baked tethering solution for using select Panasonic cameras as webcams. It got the job done, but it was far from intuitive and left much room for an official solution. Now, such a solution is here, as Panasonic has released LUMIX Webcam Software, a beta program that allows you to use seven Panasonic LUMIX cameras with videoconferencing and broadcasting programs on both macOS and Windows computers. Much like Canon, Fujifilm, Sony, Nikon and Olympus users, Panasonic users can now connect one of the following camera models to their computers via USB and...

To inspire users before a shoot, or to help them unwind after one, Canon Japan has launched a range of traditional ‘Edo Kiriko’ cut glass tumblers with designs based on photography themes. The company has employed the Mitsuwa Glass Crafts studio in Tokyo that uses traditional Edo Kiriko cutting techniques to shape light as it passes through the glass. While some people may not be in favor of the company’s more recent push toward a subscription model, nearly everyone can agree that Adobe and its software has had a massive influence. Canon’s EOS 5D Mark II changed the camera industry forever. In more ways than one. Looking back, I can’t honestly say I recognized the long-term impact of Canon’s big announcement at Photokina 2008. It’s only with hindsight I can see the significance of the unveiling of the EOS 5D Mark II. It ushered in the era of Full HD video in DSLRs: that was obviously a big deal. But it was also the herald of an insidious trend in consumer cameras whose enormity is only now becoming clear. At the time it seemed innocent enough. After all, the ‘Mark II’ was an...

I have been in the Southwest part of Colorado for about a week now, waiting for the haze to clear up, and the weather to change a little. While here, I wanted to see how the San Juan mountains look this year, with all the drought and COVID-19 restrictions. Although the drought has surely done its damage to the environment (and temps are still hovering around 80F every day), it seems like all air travel has switched to cars and RVs, as the whole Ridgway / Ouray / Telluride area has been overrun by tourists this year. I have never seen this many cars on the roads – it is absolutely insane! A...

Published Oct 2, 2020 | dpreview staff About 10 years ago, Bob Janes decided it was high time to track down some of the dream cameras of his youth. One of the cameras in particular, the Pentax Spotmatic F, had left an important impression on him, early in his photographic journey. So when one popped up locally on Ebay for a mere £16, he grabbed it, no questions asked. It turned to be in pristine mechanical condition. Now, 41 years after first laying eyes, Bob has finally had the chance to put the Spotmatic F properly through its paces. Read his long waited review (courtesy of our friends at...

Google has released an updated version of the Google Photos app for Android, bringing with it a few new features, including an after-capture Portrait Light mode, a one-tap editing feature and a slightly revamped editing interface. As Google briefly demonstrated during yesterday’s Pixel 5 event, the new Portrait Light mode will edit the image to appear as though there’s light coming from a light source not actually in the image. While limited to Google’s new Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 devices for the time being, this feature lets you apply ‘lighting’ in post-production by editing the image to...

Previous 1 Introduction 2 Next Introduction The Nikon Z5 is an entry-level full-frame mirrorless camera that looks and handles almost exactly like its higher-end Z-mount siblings, the Z6 and Z7. It’s built around a stabilized non-BSI 24MP CMOS sensor, which is likely more closely related to the generation of chip found in Nikon’s D750 DSLR, rather than the newer BSI sensor in the Z6. Slightly stripped down and more stills-focused, the Z5 shares the same 273-point hybrid AF system, Expeed 6 processor and 3.69M-dot OLED viewfinder as the Z6. But niceties like a top plate display...

ecka84 says: There’s this “p-mp” concept of the “Perceptual MegaPixels”. Which means that the image contains a lesser amount of the actual data, visually useful real world information. Perfect lenses do not exist. Therefore it is pretty much impossible to get 24p-mp out of any 24mp camera-lens combo.9p-mp sounds about right for a cheap kit lens in perfect lighting conditions or a lab test bench. However, it doesn’t mean that a higher resolution camera cannot produce more than 9p-mp with the same lens. Lens resolution isn’t a capped number. For...

David Illig: Fair questions. The adaptability of the EF mount lenses to R mount cameras is a good strategy for now. It invites current EF mount camera users to move over to R mount cameras fairly easily. However, what is the long term strategy? If EF mount lenses equal R mount lenses in capability then what is the point of expanding the R mount lens line? No one buys an expensive R mount lens, in that case. Short term Canon remains viable as a camera maker. But, what of its long term strategy? There just isn’t one. That’s dangerous to any company in any business. As for what...

Researchers with the University of Massachusetts at Lowell and MIT have developed a new type of fisheye lens that is flat and crafted from a single piece of glass. The lens is round, according to the researchers, and it is capable of capturing sharp 180-degree panoramas. This is the first flat fisheye lens made from a single piece of glass, which measures 1mm thick. Ordinary spherical fisheye lenses are made from multiple pieces of glass designed to bend the light in such a way that it produces circular wide-angle images. The newly developed flat lens instead captures wide-angle panoramas by...

While Photoshop will offer its own selection of presets, it’s also possible to import your own image of the sky. Tamron Japan has published a statement [machine-translated] on its website noting that two of its three main factories will remain closed through the end of 2020 due to the ‘decrease in global demand due to the worldwide spread of the [novel] coronavirus.’\ This closure extension affects Tamron’s Hirosaki and Namioka factories, which were originally set to open back up on October 1. Very often, not every time, an error message comes out on my camera: “Err 01 Communications between the camera and lens is faulty. Clean the lens contacts.” when I use my EF-S 17-85mm. It doesn’t appear when I use my EF-S 60mm lens. What’s more interesting, the lens works perfectly well in Live View Mode! Any suggestions? Anyone had a similiar issue? Optics manufacturer Samyang has released a new lens simulator web app that allows you to see how certain lenses will affect the look of a scene based on sensor size and lens settings. The web app creates a simulated scene using a cutout portrait of a woman as well as three backgrounds. By changing the sensor size, focal length, aperture and distance, the scene will adjust to show a simulated representation of what the image would like like when the shutter is pressed. The web app is somewhat rudimentary, but its simulated representations do a good job of showing photography newcomers how...

Sporting a 24 MP BSI-CMOS sensor, a BIONZ X image processor, 5-axis image stabilization, 10 FPS continuous shooting speed and 4K video recording capability, the Sony A7C is a very capable camera with an incredibly small footprint. At a mere 509 grams of weight (including the battery), it is noticeably lighter than the Sony A7 III, and even the Nikon Z5.

Sony has announced the a7C, a compact 24MP full-frame mirrorless camera. The company heralds it as the world’s smallest full-frame camera with image stabilization. The a7C camera crams in most of the a7 III’s specifications, including 5-axis image stabilization, 10 fps shooting with autofocus, and oversampled 4K video into a body that’s smaller in every dimension than the existing camera. A one-piece magnesium alloy structure helps keep the weight down (22% less than the a7 III, at 509g / ~18oz). Despite the size reduction, Sony has made room for a large NP-FZ100 battery,...

The Sony a7C is the company’s latest and smallest full-frame interchangeable lens camera. It fits a 24MP full-frame sensor and image stabilization into a body more closely resembling the APS-C sensor a6600. A lot of work has clearly gone into making this one of the smallest full frame cameras available, whereas a lot of the features and capabilities are familiar. A new retractable kit zoom is being launched along with the a7C to help maintain those size savings. Most modern cameras will shoot video to one degree or another, but these are the ones we’d look at if you plan to shoot some video alongside your photos. We’ve chosen cameras that can take great photos and make it easy to get great looking video, rather than being the ones you’d choose as a committed videographer. Focused on photos: Nikon Z6 The Nikon Z6 is an excellent stills camera that also does a good job of shooting video. The Sony a7 III is also a credible contender and has a bigger battery, but we tend to find the Nikon’s autofocus performs slightly better in video mode and that it...

Zeiss announced its Touit line of lenses in April of 2013 for Fujifilm X and Sony E APS-C mounts. The Zeiss Touit 12mm f/2.8 was released together with the 32mm f/1.8 lens, while the third 50mm f/2.8 Macro came out a bit later in January of 2014. Sadly, Zeiss has not announced any new Touit lenses for either mount since then, and it is hard to say whether it was the high price tags or the unpopularity of these lenses that led to the demise of the whole line-up. In this review, we will take a closer look at the Zeiss Touit 2.8/12 and see how it compares to other Fujifilm X lenses.

Hi, I have an old Canon 5d. Is it even worth upgrading to mark II? Or should I rather consider a 6d? I have no intention on spending too much money on something like 5d mark III. 5d mk II or 6d? I know 6d has better ISO performance, but I like the build quality of 5d series. Does the 6d feel like a toy compared to 5d? I have never held one in my hands. What about autofocus system, which one is better? How their outer af points perform? Can you shoot f1.4 lens without focus and recompose...

Fujifilm updated its XC 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OIS with the OIS II version in January of 2015. Sporting an all-plastic design, this compact and lightweight kit zoom lens was designed to be used with Fuji’s entry-level X-series cameras for everyday photography needs. It came in two different colors (silver and black) to fit different camera styles. Despite its decent performance as an all-around kit lens, Fuji decided to discontinue it in favor of the newer lenses like the XC 15-45mm f/3.5-5.6 OIS PZ and XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS. Sporting a fast f/2.8 aperture, a metal weather-sealed body, complex optics and modern coatings, the Fuji XF 8-16mm f/2.8 R LM WR is an exceptionally well-made lens with very consistent performance characteristics. In this review, I will be taking a closer look at this lens and compare it to other Fujifilm lenses, such as the XF 14mm f/2.8 R and XF 10-24mm f/4 R OIS.

It is an exciting week for the Fujifilm fans because the company announced its fastest prime lens for the X mount – the Fuji XF f/1.0 R WR. This is a significant milestone for the company, as it is the world’s first f/1.0 mirrorless lens with autofocus capabilities. Obviously, a telephoto lens with such a wide maximum aperture is not going to be small, light, or cheap. It weighs a whopping 845 grams – even heavier than the XF 8-16mm f/2.8 R LM WR, and only 150 grams lighter than the XF 50-150mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR! Take a look at the size of the lens relative to the Fuji X-T4: At $1,500, it...

I just recently pulled the trigger on a EOS R at a great price. One of the better-known theories of perception is Gestalt Psychology. It deals with the way we organize information (usually visuals, but not always) into wholes. While Gestalt Theory isn’t mentioned very often in discussions about composing good photos, I think that’s a mistake; these principles can clearly improve your compositions. In this video, I dive into four of the most relevant components of Gestalt Theory for photographers: the Law of Closure, the Law of Similarity, the Law of Common Fate, and Figure-Ground Organization. Knowing how each one works can help you organize and...

I have both the Nikon TC-14e II and TC-14e III and can confirm that both work with the 105mm f/2.8G VR Micro. AF functions do work properly, although I can’t say that I have used either combination that much in the field, so I can’t say how much AF performance is affected. It does struggle a little in low light and low contrast situations, but generally speaking, it still focuses pretty snappy with either TC. The lens does appear to focus a little quicker with the TC-14e III in some situations. I believe that Nikon originally stated that the TC-14e II would not work with this...

You know, commas, periods, that sort of stuff… because, let me tell you, reading and understanding your message above was worse than going through a typical page of James Joyce’s Ulysses… Anyway, in the world of Nikon, it is very simple: the lenses are all named “Nikkor”. Many camera manufacturers that make their own lenses give them such a name: for example, Minolta lenses used to be called “Rokkor”; Fujifilm call them “Fujinon”, etc. Quite a few manufacturers even use several names to...

So, I would say, in terms of sharpness, 24-120 is more than enough even for the art gallery. Basically, everything above 0.8 on Nikon’s MTF charts (red line) or yellow color in DXO tests is retina level and higher and could be considered as absolutely sharp when viewing whole image with perfect sight. 85mm 5.6 is surely above this...

It looks like this is the case for you. There is a option to opt out of this and allow photos to be added to the group regardless of how many groups the photo is in.
