How Much Can You Overexpose Negative Film? Have a Look!

How Much Can You Overexpose Negative Film? Have a Look! Want to see how much you can overexpose C-41 color negative film and still get usable shots? Photographer Daniel Lachman of Retro Camera Review decided to film out recently after coming across a broken Mamiya 645E with a busted light meter. “With digital images, overexposing can ruin your photos at the dreaded ‘255 white level,’” Lachman writes. “But with C41 color film, it’s really the inverse relationship, with detail getting lost with under-exposure. But in terms of over-exposure, it theoretically has no limit.” To test this “limitlessness,” Lachman took a roll of C-41 120...

Pictures That Tell Stories: The Street Photography of Jack Simon

Pictures That Tell Stories: The Street Photography of Jack Simon Jack Simon has worked as a psychiatrist for four decades. Ten years ago, he began a personal journey in photography, and these days he rarely goes anywhere without a camera by his side. Simon’s street photographs reflect a curious mind and a sharp eye. “I enjoy the hunt for that moment of mystery, surprise, and humor in my everyday life,” Simon writes. “I seek unplanned and unposed images that hint to a larger story, like a publicity still from some forgotten movie.” “These fragments of fictional stories are drawn from the real world in an odd coupling of my unconscious, my...

Photographer Shoots High Schooler’s Senior Portraits at Taco Bell

Photographer Shoots High Schooler’s Senior Portraits at Taco Bell Missouri-based photographer Brendan Batchelor recently received a strange photo shoot request: a high school senior named Brittany Nicole Creech wanted to shoot senior portraits at a local Taco Bell. It was a serious request, so Batchelor visited the restaurant with Creech to turn her shoot idea into a set of real portraits. Here are some of the photos Batchelor made: Creech may be a huge fan of the restaurant’s food, but she may have other ideas in mind as well: her Twitter bio states that it’s her “life goal to be in a Taco Bell commercial.” remember when I told you guys I was gonna...

An Intro to Lightening and Brightening Eyes in Adobe Photoshop CC

An Intro to Lightening and Brightening Eyes in Adobe Photoshop CC It is said that eyes are the windows to our souls and when focusing in on a portrait, we do our best to make sure they are razor sharp. With a bit of help from Photoshop, we can take the beauty of the eyes a step further. Today, we will be examining a method that I have personally used over the last few years to truly make eyes pop and give them another dimension of depth. Our goal is not to make the eyes violently vivid or blinding but to give them a look that strengthens the overall focus of the image. As an example, we will be using a public domain photograph taken by Petra on...

How to Create a Spectacular Background Using an El Bokeh Wall

How to Create a Spectacular Background Using an El Bokeh Wall Bokeh is the aesthetic quality of the blur, in the out-of-focus areas of an image. You can easily get this spectacular background blur in your photos using a fast prime or macro lens (basically ones with an aperture of f/2.8 or greater), and a technique involving what many call the El Bokeh Wall. In my opinion, the El Bokeh wall is very effective at creating eye-popping bokeh, which can help make your picture more interesting and unique in its own right. However, keeping in mind the potential it has, it doesn’t seem to be used often enough. It is very simple though, you can do it without any...

A Street Photographer’s Guide to New York City

A Street Photographer’s Guide to New York City Smiley Face, SoHo, NYC. Street photography and New York City are terms that often go hand in hand. New York is a diverse city of nearly 8.5 million eclectic and vibrant souls, all packed into a tiny island and its surrounding boroughs. Each area of the city has its own unique character and flavor, and there are so many interesting, unique moments that you can see here on a daily basis. It is one of the great locations in the world for this genre of photography. As a lifelong New Yorker, let me state that it can also be very easy to overrate this city. Street Photography can, and should, be...

Rough and ready: Olympus Tough TG-4 review

Rough and ready: Olympus Tough TG-4 review Olympus Tough TG-4 ($329/£299/€399) Olympus’ TG-series of tough cameras have been some of our favorites, with the TG-2 and TG-3 both earning silver awards. What has impressed us about these two cameras are their relatively fast lenses (at wide-angle), good photo quality (by compact camera standards), GPS and compass, and limited manual controls. Oh, and they live up to their ‘Tough’ moniker – these cameras can take a beating. While you’d never know by looking at it, the TG-4 is a significant upgrade over its predecessor with the addition...

The LensCoat TravelHood is a Flexible Sun-Blocker for Telephoto Lenses

The LensCoat TravelHood is a Flexible Sun-Blocker for Telephoto Lenses Use multiple telephoto lenses out in the field but don’t want to carry around multiple lens hoods? Earlier this year, LensCoat unveiled a new product that’s designed to solve that need. It’s called the TravelHood, and is a lightweight and flexible lens hood that can wrap around the end of any lens. When not in use, the TravelHood can be folded nearly flat so that it doesn’t take up much space in your camera bag. To use it on your lens, simply wrap it around the end and secure it in place with heavy duty Velcro. “No slip grip” material on the inside helps keep the hood stay snug and...

How to Fix White Balance in Photoshop by Finding a 50% Gray Point

Here’s a great 2-minute video tutorial that teaches a technique for fixing white balance in Photoshop. The basic idea is that you can locate a 50% gray point in a photo even if you didn’t use a gray card during the shoot. Once you identify a suitable point, you can use that Gray point in your Curves tool instead of simply selecting a Black point and a White point (a more basic color correction technique that may not work as well). A Day in the Life of Street Photographer John Free

A Day in the Life of Street Photographer John Free Los Angeles-based street photographer John Free just published this inspiring 14-minute video in which he discusses and demonstrates his street photography mindset and technique. It offers a glimpse into a day in the life of a man who has been doing and teaching street photography for over 30 years now. After drinking some morning and coffee at home, Free drives into the city and starts roaming the sidewalks (the picture-making starts at about 3.5 minutes into the video). As he walks, Free shares a photographer’s quote that has inspired him: “The more I learned to photograph, the more...

Have You Updated To Windows10 Yet?

Composition After the Fact: Cropping for Maximum Impact

Composition After the Fact: Cropping for Maximum Impact It may at first seem simple. You took the shot a little wide, or a sneaky branch that you didn’t notice found its way into the edge of your photo. In Lightroom (LR) it’s just a quick press of the R key to activate the crop tool, hold down the shift key to constrain the crop so you don’t get a weird aspect ratio, and your task is complete. The crop tool – simple, yet powerful. On the contrary, cropping is one of the more powerful tools that you have at your disposal to dial in the composition of your images. Prime lens users will also find that the limited versatility (compared to zoom...

Photography Etiquette – What’s the Right Approach?

Photography Etiquette – What’s the Right Approach? Whether you have a DSLR, a pocket camera, or simply use your mobile phone to take snapshots, there are some simple rules of photography etiquette that you can follow to make the shooting experience more enjoyable for you, as well as everyone else around you. Some of these tips might seem obvious, but even if you think you already know what to do, or not to do, when taking pictures it might be worth reading just as a refresher. It’s easy to notice the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and note when other people are violating simple rules of etiquette. But sometimes it’s difficult to...

The travel photography of HDR guru Trey Ratcliff

you need to read what you wrote: “They assume that just because they can’t see certain colors and elements of the light spectrum with their eyes, they don’t exist.” light beyond the visible spectrum HAS NO COLOUR. Colour is, by defintion, a way of describing the visible spectrum “If you were to visualize the entire known light spectrum as stretching from coast to coast, that which we see with our eyes would be about the width of a dime.” Thats not true either. The electromagnetic spectrum is, to all intents, as big as you want it to be “Maybe HDR can...

Opinion – Erez Marom: Whatever it Doesn’t Take

Opinion – Erez Marom: Whatever it Doesn’t Take Often when talking to fellow landscape photographers, the subject of differentiating your work from other photographers’ comes up. For landscape photographers, one of the most common ways to set themselves apart is shooting in hard-to-reach locations. Probably as old as landscape photography itself is the notion that a ‘good’ photographer is one that pushes the physical boundaries, hikes farther, climbs higher, suffers harsher conditions, endures pain – all to get to a unique location and be one of the first to shoot it. Many landscapers sneer at those...

Fisherman Casts Line and Catches a Camera Drone

Fisherman Casts Line and Catches a Camera Drone Tice Ledbetter was flying his DJI camera drone over a pier at Pacific Beach in San Diego this week when something bizarre happened: a fisherman on the pier noticed his drone, cast his fishing line at it, and hooked the quadcopter right below one of the propellers. The whole thing was captured by the drone in the video above. In addition to posting the video on YouTube, where it has been racking up a large number of views, Ledbetter also turned to Facebook to express his bewilderment at what happened. FISHING LINE. HOW. Long-Exposure Photos of California Wildfires at Night

Long-Exposure Photos of California Wildfires at Night For the past few wildfire seasons in Southern California, Los Angeles-based photographer Stuart Palley has taken his camera out into the hills to document the blazes at night. His long-exposure photographs show both the fury and the beauty of the fires. The resulting collection of images is now part of a series titled Terra Flamma. Palley isn’t just blindly venturing into dangerous battles between firefighters and wildfires: he completed the US Forestry Service’s “Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior” course to learn how to stay safe while making his pictures. By shooting...

San Francisco’s Police Department Has an ‘Instagram Officer’

San Francisco’s Police Department Has an ‘Instagram Officer’ Over the past several years, there have been a number of arrests that have resulted from photos posted to Instagram. It seems that oftentimes criminals can’t resist sharing photos of their illegal activities online for everyone (including police investigators) to see. Perhaps in response to this strange trend, the San Francisco Police Department is now employing at least one “Instagram officer” who patrols the pages of Instagram in search of lawbreakers.Business Insider reports that this fact was found in the legal documents of a recent case in which Instagram photos were used to help...

BTS: Photographing Wildlife in the Land of the Maasai

BTS: Photographing Wildlife in the Land of the Maasai Photographer Chris Schmid of Morges, Switzerland, recently traveled to Masai Mara, Kenya, to document how the Kenyans living there were helping to preserve their natural environment. The 3-minute video above is a behind-the-scenes look at Schmid’s journey. “For photography I’ve used a lot the a99 coupled with the 500mm and the 70-200mm,” Schmid tells PetaPixel. “When I’m on site, I would prefer to stay far away from the animal and use a telephoto lens to have a natural feel to the images. If it wants to get closer, that’s great, but I would never force the contact.” “My priority is...

Hands-on Review – Nissin Di700A Speedlight and Wireless Trigger Kit

Hands-on Review – Nissin Di700A Speedlight and Wireless Trigger Kit Following the big bang that introduced capable and affordable digital cameras, the digital photography universe has been expanding at an astounding rate. So much amazing imagery is being produced, and equipment manufacturers are working tirelessly to develop, and improve upon, the products you use to create those images. Despite the tendency of some photographers to not even consider third party brands, that market exists and is flourishing. It seems that there are more players in it than ever before, and the competition is stiff. The market for third party photography equipment and...

A Look at Photo Steganography, the Hiding of Secrets Inside Digital Images

A Look at Photo Steganography, the Hiding of Secrets Inside Digital Images Here’s a fascinating (but very heady) video by Computerphile, which recently sat down with image analyst Dr. Mike Pound of the University of Nottingham to talk about the subject of digital image steganography. Steganography is the practice of hiding one piece of content inside another. In this case, Pound talks about the idea of being able to kind all kinds of content inside digital photograph files. There are various techniques for doing this “hiding,” some of which are way more complicated than others. One that Pound discusses and shows early on is the changing of the 2 least...

How to Capture Beautifully-Lit Wedding Ring Photos with a Cheap LED Light

How to Capture Beautifully-Lit Wedding Ring Photos with a Cheap LED Light Wedding photographer Paul Keppel created this helpful 3-minute video tutorial on how he goes about shooting consistent wedding ring photos using a cheap LED light and a macro lens. Keppel says he struggled to get consistent shots of rings until he started using the Yonynuo 160II LED light, which costs less than $60 online. The trick he discovered was placing the LED light on its barn doors with the lights facing straight down at the rings, thereby creating a mini makeshift light tent. You’ll want to set the rings on a shiny black surface if you can find one. Keppel has used things...

Everyone is Mocking TIME’s Latest Cover Photo

Everyone is Mocking TIME’s Latest Cover Photo The August 17th issue of TIME magazine contains a cover story about the ongoing rise of virtual reality. Unfortunately for TIME, it’s not the story itself that has everyone talking — it’s the cover photo. Here’s what the cover looks like in its entirety: After laying eyes on the photo, the Internet and media immediately began criticizing and mocking TIME for its choice of photo. The portrait shows Palmer Luckey, the 22-year-old wunderkind founder of Oculus Rift, wearing the VR headset he invented. Critics say the portrait makes Luckey look goofy and nerdy, playing off stereotypes...

Weekly Photography Challenge – Feet

Weekly Photography Challenge – Feet Feet are an important part of our human body. They take us where we want to go. They hold us upright. They can be all different sizes and styles, decorated or plain, even covered in fur (think pets). But they are often overlooked in photographs or even cropped off. By Shandi-lee Cox Weekly Photography Challenge – Feet This week we challenge you to go out and photograph only feet and crop off the body! They could be your own feet (foot selfie?), a friend’s, your cat’s, or a total stranger’s feet. It’s about looking at things differently and seeing something you may otherwise miss or pass...

Here’s a Love Story Told Through the Viewfinder of a Hasselblad 501C

Here’s a Love Story Told Through the Viewfinder of a Hasselblad 501C After seeing the Paris through a Pentax video we published back in August 2014, filmmaker Keith Tedesco was inspired to turn the concept into a creative short film. What resulted was “Him & Her,” the 6-minute short film above that tells a love story through the viewfinder of a Hasselblad 501C medium format camera. It’s the story of a photographer who meets a young lady in Valletta, the capital city of Malta. It starts with the young man wandering the beautiful streets in search of photos. He meets a woman, and the two embark on an adventurous journey through the heart of the city....

Earth, Moon, Venus, and Jupiter Lined Up in a Row, as Seen From the ISS

Earth, Moon, Venus, and Jupiter Lined Up in a Row, as Seen From the ISS On July 19th, after NASA astronaut Scott Kelly’s 114th day on the International Space Station, Kelly pointed his camera out a window and captured this gorgeous photo that shows the Earth, the Moon, Venus, and Jupiter lined up in a row. The glowing atmosphere of the Earth can be seen at the top of the frame. The largest white spot is the Moon, the second largest is Venus, and the smallest is Jupiter. While Venus is a much smaller planet than Jupiter, it’s also a lot closer to Earth. A closer crop of the photo above. The amazing shot racked up thousands of Retweets and Favorites after...

CLERA is a Transparent Camera That Actually Works

CLERA is a Transparent Camera That Actually Works Photographer Anton Orlov has created what he believes is the world’s first camera that’s both completely transparent and fully functional. It’s called CLERA, short for Clear Camera, and is a camera that you can also look into while a projected photo is being exposed. Orlov first got the idea for this camera while working in a dark box with wet plate collodion photography. He noticed that the sunlight streaming in through the red windows didn’t cause any light fogging in the resulting tintype photo. “That’s when it struck me,” he writes on his blog. “Why not make a camera out of red...

Photos of Amsterdam Coffeehouses Developed with the Coffee They Sell

Photos of Amsterdam Coffeehouses Developed with the Coffee They Sell Over the years, we’ve posted a number of tutorials on how to develop film using coffee and vitamin C, which combine to create a photo process known as caffenol. The solution can be used to develop prints as well, and that’s what photographer Gijs van den Berg did for a recent project that documents coffeehouses in Amsterdam. After photographing each shop, Gijs printed the photos in his darkroom using caffenol created from that shop’s coffee. “In the past months I have been photographing the last standing traditional coffeehouses of Amsterdam,” Gijs tells PetaPixel. “Because of the...

Tried and Tested Tips for Photographing Kids

Tried and Tested Tips for Photographing Kids Why are kids so seemingly magical to adults? What is it about those young, wild, expressions in photographs that makes us love them so much? It’s their honesty and unwavering outlook on life. Kids show their emotions freely, and share their feelings with genuine truthful expressions that we love to see. Whether they are excited or frustrated, they are always being honest and letting their personalities shine as they push their limits of learning in any new experience. Though it’s something we witness in all children most the time, it is rare to capture a child’s magic in a photograph, the...

Is Photoshop a Bad Word?

Is Photoshop a Bad Word? How many times have you posted or shared a dramatic image only to have someone ask, “Did you Photoshop that?” First of all, let’s get one thing straight – Photoshop is not a verb! Photoshop hall of famer Vincent Versace put it this way: “Photoshop is not a verb. It’s a noun. It is the means to an end, not the end itself.” Photoshop has been taking a lot of heat lately with all the retouched tabloid images of models, who with the help of some clever manipulation, look unbelievably perfect. But Photoshop is not to blame for these exaggerated images. Yes, it is the tool used to create them, but...

Reimagining Japan’s history through the lens

“Violence, vice and poverty are hard, but they do reveal humanity” — Kazuyoshi Usui imagines an alternate present where a difficult period in Japan’s past never ended to think about how the national character of the country has changed In Japan, years are counted the Western way as a linear progression starting from year 1, but they are also counted as a series of periods relating to whichever Emperor is in power. 2014 was also the 26th year of the Heisei period, for example; the last period, Showa, lasted 64 years until 1989. Kazuyoshi Usui’s series,...

North by Northwest: Sony Alpha 7R II real-world samples from Portland

Detail in the landscape shots shot with the Batis and 70-200 is excellent, edge to edge. Yes there’s a bit more noise than I might have expected but so much depends on the exposure and processing it’s unfair to make any judgments as yet. As always, these gallery shots are a useful insight into what the camera can do in certain usage scenarios. I do wish people would stop criticising DPR for not covering every possible scenario. Just think of all the variables – different light levels, a range of apertures, range of shutter speeds, range of focal lengths and lenses,...

Photos of Various Food Dishes Flying Through the Air

Photos of Various Food Dishes Flying Through the Air Camden, London-based commercial still life photographer Piotr Gregorczyk likes to play with food and gravity. One concept he has focused on for a number of recent projects it the idea of showing various food dishes flying through the air as they come together on a plate or in a bowl. Feature Shoot reports that many a food and drink spill has resulted from his photo shoots — a small price to pay for the distinctive photos that result. Gregorczyk says that after carefully planning out what a photograph will look like, about 60% of it is captured with various techniques in his studio,...

A Tribute to the Original Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8, the Lens That Saved My Career With this week’s announcement of the new Nikkor 24-70 VR, I wanted to take a moment to look back on what its predecessor, the 24-70mm f/2.8G, has meant to me. In the last eight years, I have only shot five (YES 5) images with a lens other than the 24-70 G.From the cover of Billboard magazine to the ad campaigns that have been featured in the Communication Arts Photo Annual, Archive’s Top 200 Advertising Photographers and the Graphis Advertising Annual, the 24-70 G has sat, married to the D3x for them all. Created for The Huffington Post’s new web series, Agitators, the sketch features comedian Paul Gale explains how he uses all kinds of devious tactics he uses to ensure horrible portraits for his subjects. All because he enjoys f***ing with people, destroying dignity, and obliterating confidence. (via The...

What’s The Most Efficient Way To Share A Set Of Shoot Files When Outsourcing Your Post-Processing?

5 Tips for Golden Hour Photography

5 Tips for Golden Hour Photography It’s pretty much an accepted fact that the earlier and later parts of the day are best for photography, but if you want the absolute richest, warmest, most beautiful light, the hours directly following sunrise and leading up to sunset – known as the golden hours – are prime time for natural light. This is when the subtle golden light from the low-hanging sun bathes the world in a warm glow, and shadows become long and dramatic, but not harsh. Those hours can be short-lived, though as once the sun starts to rise or set, it isn’t long before it climbs too high, or disappears altogether. To...

Put the Fun Back into Your Photography with a Cow Safari

Put the Fun Back into Your Photography with a Cow Safari Whether you are a pro photographer or a dedicated amateur, sometimes when you are photographing a lot you can get so caught up in achieving the perfect image, that you lose the sense of fun that got you interested in the first place. Actively putting the fun back in can not only help you to enjoy your regular photography work more, and assist in getting your photo mojo back, but can inspire new ideas you otherwise might not have come up with. My favourite way to do this is a Cow Safari. It’s kind of like an African safari, but with cows. Why cows? Well, for a start they tend not to eat you...

Jack Davison drove through America’s highways for 10,000 miles, taking portraits along the way

“I’m less concerned with facts and more the beauty or strangeness of that moment.” He’s only 24, but English photographer Jack Davison is already carving out a promising career for himself. Essex born and London based, he taught himself how to take pictures after picking up a camera at 16; studying English at Warwick University, he spent most of his time at university taking pictures. Photographing his family, friends and the countryside around him, he says the internet was his major influence and “a tutor”. “The internet introduced me to communities of photographers...

Google and MIT team up on clever method to remove reflections and obstructions from photos

Researchers at MIT and Google have developed a technique for removing unwanted reflections and obstructions from photos. Taking advantage of the parallax effect, this method could prove quite useful in locations where shooting behind glass or a fence is the only option. Demonstrated in the (highly technical) video above, this method uses information gathered from a short burst of images captured as the photographer moves the camera. An algorithm searches for edges in the scene, making use of the parallax effect to determine which objects are near and far from the camera....

Turned up to 20MP: Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX8 added to studio scene comparison

Strange that there are different interpretations of the images. To me – detail and tonal range seems improved at base ISO (200) over EM5-II. It falls somewhere between the EM5-II and A6000. Both RAW and JPEG. At higher ISOs, i.e. 1600, the GX8 does show more color noise than the E-M5II, slightly, but with still greater detail. I always find Fuji to lack detail, both RAW and JPEG, in every single comparison, including this one. Yes it’s got clean images, up the ISO scale, but show less detail and tonal range. Anyway, to me, the sensor while improved is not a huge improvement at...

Watch These Crazy Photographers Shoot Drift Racing from Up Close

Watch These Crazy Photographers Shoot Drift Racing from Up Close If you thought photographing a NASCAR race from up close was wild, check out this video. Captured by photographer Marcel Langer at Gatebil Rudskogen, Norway’s top drift racing event, the video shows how close photographers get to the cars as they screech by on the track. The racecars kick up huge amounts of dirt and debris right into the faces of the photographers, who instinctively jerk their bodies away at the last moments before the blast hits them: It seems that the photographers and spectators are risking serious injury or death by standing where they are: only a guardrail...

Govt PSA Video Warns: Don’t Fly Your Camera Drone Near a Wildfire A month after Union Pacific published a PSA video warning photographers to stay away from train tracks, the US government has published its own PSA video that warns people to keep drones away from wildfires. The 30-second video above, titled “Drones PSA,” was released by the National Interagency Fire Center last week. The center also has a new webpage titled “No Drone Zone” dedicated to warning photographers and videographers that camera drones and wildfires don’t mix. “If you fly, someone could die,” the site says. “Even a tiny drone can cause a serious or fatal accident if it...

For a Cheap Light Painting Stick, Buy a $4 Tube Guard Want a light stick for light painting but don’t want to spend a lot buying a commercial product? Tube guards are strong plastic tubes that are designed to protect against glass and sparks when fluorescent lamps break and shatter. Pare got his by visiting a TAP Plastic store, but you can find them for sale on Amazon as well (with shipping fees, though). What’s great is that the tube guards cost just $2.5 for clear ones or $4 for colored ones. Pare’s new tube...

Beginners Guide to Using TTL Off-Camera Flash

Beginners Guide to Using TTL Off-Camera Flash So you want to use off-camera flash. But why? Your camera has that hot shoe there for a reason, right? There are two things that you may not realize: That many DSLR-speedlight combos are capable of wireless off-camera flash using through-the-lens (TTL) metering without any additional equipment That using off-camera flash can take your photography to an entirely new level both in quality and creative potential. Many references to off-camera flash talk about sync cords and wireless transmitters, when in fact, many DSLRs with a built-in pop-up flash have the ability to wirelessly control a...

How To Quickly Focus Stack an Image in Photoshop

How To Quickly Focus Stack an Image in Photoshop Four-image focus stack of sunset in Bishop, California. The foliage in the foreground was just inches away from the camera. When you take into account all the different ways to get a tack sharp image, it can be quite overwhelming. I’ve been photographing landscapes as a full time photographer for six years now, and have tested just about every method out there. Focus stacking is just one more option, but it is one of my favorites, if the conditions are right. Focus stacking is a life saver when you have a foreground subject that is very close to the frame, and a background subject that is...

Self-taught photographer Jack Davison drove through America’s highways for 10,000 miles

LxMeter transforms your smartphone into a light and flash meter

LxMeter transforms your smartphone into a light and flash meter Some time ago we reported on the Lumu accessory which aims to turn your smartphone into a light meter. The device worked quite well in our brief test but had a couple of limitations: it only works with Apple smartphones as support for Android had been dropped, and it cannot not be used as a flash meter.  The LxMeter from Italian manufacturer Optivelox is a very similar device to the Lumu but provides flash meter functionality and is capable of working with Android devices via a dedicated app. According to the manufacturer, the hardware is compatible with Apple iPhones but no...

Less is more? Fujifilm X-T10 review

How does the “substantial resolution discrepancy” mitigate pleasing JPEGs exactly? 16MP may be below the resolution other camera companies are using, but so what? It’s still plenty of resolution for most folks. And I talked a lot about how good the OOC JPEGs are, but in no way does this review approach the X-T10 as a ‘point and shoot,’ or refer to using it in such a way. In fact, I spent quite a few pages discussing manual settings and controls. The difference in price between the a6000 and X-T10 is valid, but for our purposes, with prices changing daily in...

Nikon has released three new full-frame lenses, including a prime and both standard and super telephoto zooms. The new version, officially known as the AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm F2.8E ED VR, offers new optical construction, Vibration Reduction, and electromagnetic aperture control. Nikon has added an Aspherical Extra-Low Dispersion (ASP/ED) element along with regular aspherical, ED, and High-Refractive Index (HRI) elements and a Nano Crystal Coating. As before, the lens is...

How Nikon Film SLRs Were Made in the 1990s

How Nikon Film SLRs Were Made in the 1990s Want to see how Nikon SLR cameras were made two decades ago? Back in 1998, the Japanese TV show “The Making” — an international predecessor of How It’s Made — aired this 15-minute-long segment showing how Nikon manufactured its F70 film SLR (known as the N70 in the US), which was first introduced in 1994. The video lacks narration and is captioned in Japanese, but you should still be able to figure out the main gist of what’s going on at each step of the camera creation process. There were more than 1,000 different components in the camera and over 200 points that need to be manually...

A Glimpse Into the Alliance Between Sony and Zeiss

A Glimpse Into the Alliance Between Sony and Zeiss Sony and Zeiss are two brand names that appear together on many of Sony’s cameras and lenses. For the past two decades, the Japanese and German companies (respectively) have had a fruitful partnership in designing and manufacturing gear. To help clear up any confusion regarding dual-branded camera equipment, Zeiss recently published an interesting article that explains some behind-the-scenes details about the partnership. Zeiss reveals that the partnership began in the mid-1990s after Sony — a leader in consumer electronics — was looking for a strong brand to partner with to gain...

This Guy Managed to Shoot a Self Portrait with the ISS

This Guy Managed to Shoot a Self Portrait with the ISS Photographer Trevor Mahlmann has a knack for capturing light trails showing the International Space Station zipping across the sky. Back in June, he made headlines by photographing the ISS from the seat of airliner as he cruised at 40,000 feet. Now he’s back again with another neat feat: he shot a self-portrait of himself staring up at the ISS as it zipped by overhead. Mahlmann writes that he started thinking hard about how to photograph the ISS creatively after finding out from online resources that it would be making a pass over his area at around 10PM on July 31st. After a bit of...

Sony’s New Photo-Centric Xperia Smartphones Shoot 13MP Selfies Sony has announced two new Android smartphones: the Xperia C5 and Xperia M5. Both devices come equipped with large Full HD displays and fast Octa-core processors, but most interesting (to us at least) are the integrated cameras powered by Sony Exmor RS sensors. Both cameras feature a 13MP front facing camera for selfies, and the M5 boasts a hefty 21.5MP rear camera. Xperia C5 Ultra The Xperia C5 Ultra is being marketed as a “PROselfie smartphone” and allows shooters to use either the front facing or back facing 22mm wide-angle camera without worrying about poor quality images. Both...

6 Ways to Use Color for Eye Catching Compositions

6 Ways to Use Color for Eye Catching Compositions A painter only needs to look at their palette before applying color to the canvas. Photographers have a different challenge, as they must locate their tones by studying a scene. Of course, this can be easy to bypass when you’re thinking about shadow, highlight, depth of field, shutter speed, and all of the other technical details that go into a photo. Still, as the great painter Kandinsky said, “Color is a power which directly influences the soul.” To use it in your compositions can infuse your work with a new level of sophistication. 1) Background Separation To maximize the effect of bold...

Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 Pancake Lens Review

Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 Pancake Lens Review In November of 2014, Canon introduced us to its newest member of their low-cost prime lens family, the EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM pancake lens. Canon gave us the 40mm version in 2012, and hoped to up the stakes by adding a wide-angle version this past year. Sitting at the extreme end of what can be considered wide-angle, the EF-S 24mm (full-frame equivalent of 38mm on an APS-C sensor) does so in the form of a small, light, and inexpensive prime lens that is easily accessible to all Canon enthusiasts. The first features that will strike you about the 24mm are its inconspicuous qualities; the lens is...

Olympus patent points at sensors with built-in polarizing filter

Olympus patent points at sensors with built-in polarizing filter Olympus has patented a sensor technology that records polarization information, potentially allowing in-camera processing to replicate the effect of a polarizing filter but without the light cost. The patent is for a two-layer sensor that records color and brightness information on the top layer, just like a conventional sensor, but then has a second layer underneath that captures information about the polarization of the light arriving at the camera.  Sunlight starts off unpolarized but can be polarized as it is scattered in the atmosphere and reflected by things it...

Sony reportedly shifting focus to full-frame cameras

I’m curious just how big the market is for people to buy a $1000 a7 and then a whole bunch of $1000+ lenses. There’s the kit zoom and used/grey marketZony f4 standard zoom, the 28 mm + adapters, the slow (and tiny) 35 mm f2.8, and then used/grey market 55. That’s it for less than $1000 lenses. Is their goal to have a high profit margin in ILCs? Sure, the a7 family will give them that. Largest market-share? I’m skeptical. They need more <$1000 lenses to keep their impressive market share if they’re going to completely abandon the APS-C line. If they’re...

Sensor sales help Sony triple net profit in second quarter

Sensor sales help Sony triple net profit in second quarter Motorola’s new Moto X Style carries Sony’s IMX 230 1/2.3-inch sensor Sales of image sensors helped push Sony to triple its net profit after the second quarter this year (Sony’s first quarter) compared to the same period last year, up to 82.4 billion Yen. Sales of Devices, the category containing Sony’s sensor business, rose 35% year-on-year, which Sony attributes in part to higher demand of mobile products containing its sensors. Also responsible for the jump is a healthy trade in Playstation 4 games. As detailed in Sony’s latest financial...

This One Teen Was Behind Two Major Drone Stories

This One Teen Was Behind Two Major Drone Stories Austin Haughwout has a knack for getting drones featured in news stories… and usually not in a positive light. The 18-year-old’s name first appeared here back in 2014 when he captured viral video of himself getting attacked by a woman on a beach. She claimed that he was being a “pervert” and was using his camera drone to photograph girls in bikinis. Here’s the video that was shared across the Internet and in many news articles: Back in March, it was reported that the woman may have her charges cleared through an “accelerated rehab” program. Before the dust from that case had even...

This is a Stereograph Photo Viewer from 1896

This is a Stereograph Photo Viewer from 1896 Australian toy photographer Ray of ToyShoots recently purchased this old school stereoscope that was apparently manufactured in 1896. It’s the device people used to view stereoscopic photos as one 3D image (the View-Master, which was released in 1936, is also a stereoscope). On one side of the device are two lenses to look through, and on the other end is a holder for side-by-side stereoscopic cards. When you look through the lenses, the two photos appear to be a single 3D photograph: Ray tells us that he picked up this old stereoscope when he found a couple on eBay that was selling...

Beginners Guide to Creating and Applying Texture Overlays Using Photoshop

Beginners Guide to Creating and Applying Texture Overlays Using Photoshop Adding texture to photographs was happening long before the invention of Photoshop and other editing programs. In the days of the darkroom, we would scratch negatives with pins, sand paper them, stain the photographic paper with fixer before exposing, layer two negatives on top of each other in the enlarger, or push our film ISO to increase grain. These days, with editing programs being our digital darkroom, we simply have yet another way of adding texture to photographs. What is a texture? In digital photography terms it’s simply another layer added to your photograph in an editing program,...

Readers’ Showcase: Sarnim Dean

I can’t find anything nice to say about these. Sure, they’re pictures from a beautiful place, but a beautiful place doesn’t necessarily make for interesting photographs. These never stray away from the beaten paths of amateur-level digital photography. Before you start replying this is too blunt and respond ‘where are your pictures?’, think about this: how can someone grow as a photographer if he/she only gets complacency for anything he/she does, even if it’s nondescript and uninteresting? Sometimes people need to be confronted with their shortcomings in...

Is Your Camera Keeping You From Experiencing Life’s Precious Moments?

Is Your Camera Keeping You From Experiencing Life’s Precious Moments? Yesterday we shared a cringeworthy short film about how photo sharing has altered the way we experience the special moments in our lives; instead of being in the moment and enjoying it, it’s easy to get caught up with making sure it’s caught on camera (and perhaps shared on social media). The 2-minute movie clip above shows a different outlook on life and photography. It’s from the film “The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty,” and features actor Sean Penn as a photographer named Sean O’Connell.
