Outdoor photographers are repeatedly taught to plan their scenic photography excursions early in the morning or late in the day. These magic hours we’re told, is the only light worth shooting in. This location was discovered by walking BEYOND the main public area and exploring nearby dirt paths. There’s nothing quite like the rush of finding a nook, a cranny, a wall, a corner, or a building that looks amazing in photos but has not been fully discovered by others just yet. Ask any photographer about unique locations, and most likely they will cringe a bit at the thought of giving up their secret spots. How, then, do you find new locations for yourself? It’s not always necessary to go outside of your city (or even your neighborhood!) to find a great photography location. Here are...

Manfrotto has announced a new series of friction arms and associated accessories. They’re designed to allow photographers to attach lights, extra cameras and accessories to tripods and, via a clamp, to table tops and other rigid edges. The four arms come in two ‘small’ sizes: 5.5in and 9in (15cm and 24cm) and all feature removable ends that accept adapters for spigots, hot shoe flash units, standard tripod threads, heads and clamps. Manfrotto has also introduced an anti-rotation adapter that helps to prevent shift in joined products when used with the...

Accessory maker Moment, best known for its high-quality add-on lenses and the Moment case, has added a new lens to its lineup. The Moment Macro lens offers a 25mm focal length and 10x magnification. In contrast to most available smartphone macro lenses it also features a more complex multi-element design and ED-glass for improved image quality in addition to multi-layer anti-reflective coatings. The lens also comes with a diffuser hood that should make it easier to achieve pleasantly soft lighting on your macro subjects. Unfortunately at this point not much more technical detail or...

The White House has ended the ban on photography and social media use during public tours, and is instead urging visitors to take and share photos from tours using the applicable hashtag #WhiteHouseTour. The photography ban had been in place for 40 years, and was instated in part to reduce the damaging effects of flash photography on artwork. Michelle Obama announced the ban’s end early Wednesday via a video posted to Instagram in which she rips in half one of the White House’s former signs forbidding photos and social media. Visitors to the White House will...

If 4 of these have the same life as one Canon flash, then maybe Canon has a point. For most users who aren’t shooting commercially, the knock off flash will live just fine. If I paid full Canon price for the knock off I’d be angry, but if I knowingly bought the knockoff for a discount, understanding the tradeoff I’d made, then I just made a choice. Canon wants to protect its market, we want to spend less. Ultimately, if the knock off is good enough, it puts Canon at a disadvantage and Canon has to lower their price to compete. I can live with that too. Ironically, articles...

Sony recently shook things up with the announcement of the 4K-capable 42.4MP, backside-illuminated full-frame a7R II mirrorless camera, alongside stacked 1″-type sensors in the updates to the popular RX100 and RX10 lines. While stills and video quality are sure to break new ground with these updates, perhaps even more interesting are the autofocus improvements. The a7R II offers compelling improvements that go above and beyond updating AF in the a7 lineup. In fact, the improvements potentially yield an AF system that may offer benefits over high-end DSLRs, as I...

Sony announced a few years ago that digital imaging would be one of its three main pillars (with the other two being games and mobile). It looks like the decision is paying off, and Sony is doubling down on its plans. After making 40% of all image sensors sold in 2014, Sony is now announcing that it will raise $4 billion in funding in order to increase how many sensors it can produce. In its announcement, Sony says it plans to issue new shares of stock and put the money towards “increasing production capability of, and research and development for, stacked CMOS image sensors.” Reuters...

If you’re a fan of both photography and the TV show How It’s Made, here’s a behind-the-scenes video that might be of interest to you. Rosco just released this 1-minute video showing how it creates its Roscolux swatchbooks, which contain a small sample filter of almost every Roscolux filter. We see that the individual filter sheets are gathered by hand, arranged into large stacks, and then turned into individual booklets with the help of a guillotine machine. This is “the care and attention to detail that goes into making the most popular tool for choosing Rosco colors,” Rosco says....

Now the company is back again by announcing a brand new macro lens. The new macro lens from Moment features 10x magnification at a 25mm focal distance. It’s like deja-vu, all over again. A month after a fan photographer caused a horrible crash at Italy’s top bike race, another DSLR shooter has caused a crash at the British National Road Race Championships. The man was using a DSLR and a telephoto lens on Sunday, photographing the cyclists with one foot in the cobbled Lincoln road. When cyclist Kristian House came near, instead of moving off the road, the man inexplicably stood his ground until House collided with him, sending House and his bike tumbling. The incident was captured by another spectator in an this 1-minute-long low-res...

Packed with people, bright lights and fast-moving rides, fairgrounds can provide photographers with loads of opportunities to take some colourful and creative images. So, why not grab your camera, head to your nearest fair and try out some of the following ideas for yourself. When to visit Fairgrounds can be fun to take pictures of, whether you go in the daytime, or at night. However, with their bright lights, they really come alive once the sun has gone down. My preferred time to arrive is around one hour before sunset, as this allows you to take a look around before it gets dark, and gives...

We had been shooting around with a pre-production version of the Fujifilm X-T10 for some time now and recently got in a final version of the camera. Like the flagship X-T1, it uses Fujifilm’s 16MP X-Trans APS-C sensor and EXR Processor II. It may not be weather-sealed like the X-T1, but it does feature a solid-built body, with plenty of custom buttons and control points. X-Trans sensors are known for producing pleasing colors and accurate skin tones. As such, we included a variety of out-of-camera JPEGs as well as Raw conversions in the gallery below. Please note...

Following some trade show demos, Toshiba is officially introducing a new 16GB SDHC card with TransferJet technology. The card, which looks to be available in Japan only first, is able to wirelessly transfer photos and videos from a camera to a TransferJet-compatible device. Sony introduced TransferJet technology in 2008, and previously included it in an 8GB Memory Stick card and Cyber-shot cameras like the DSC-TX7, but it never quite took off in those implementations. Toshiba’s TransferJet SD card, rated as Class 10, is the first of its kind. It uses very short...

Really nice little camera, no question. For me, the competitors are, until now, sony a6000 and canon m3. The Canon m3 has the smallest dimension (therefor, the Fuji T, which is, for a second(third) camera with mobile usability. It´s a pity, that there are, until now, no tests for the Canon M3, so i can only rely on assumptions and interpolations: IF the sensor of this camera (X-T10) is the same as the one used in the Fuji X-Pro1, THEN the IQ of the X-T10 is worse than the IQ of the sony a6000. Then i saw in the internet a user review on a private side, which stated that the IQ of the Canon...

You will be hard pressed to find a reasonable working photographer today, who won’t admit that film still has a place in photography and really offers some unique characteristics, even if they choose to not use it. But often photographers who love shooting digital and don’t want to deal with film attempt to write off and make excuses for why they can’t shoot film. I’d like to offer a rebuttal to such excuses, inspired by a recent thoughtful PetaPixel post. I love film, but I think there is no need to make any excuses for shooting digitally in this day and age. Digital technology has...

Yeah, Ultrapod, Pixi, Copter, Joby Minis, Benro’s Pixi knockoff, Manfrotto’s older models with center columns, the Leica linked above, maybe the tiny Gorillapods or the GPod Magnetic (so small it’s really more about the magnets than the legs, but the short legs end up less fiddly)… There’s a whole bunch that could be included, even ignoring your $5 Polaroid/Vivitar rinky dinks. There’s a Manfrotto made for always on similar to the Minis but very different in execution, more like a plate with fold out nubs (seems less adjustable than the Mini 250/800)....

I’m an experienced wedding photographer who has wanted digital medium format for a long time. I use a pair of 1D Xs with the typical lenses that you would expect a wedding shooter to use. There has never been a better time to be an underwater videographer because the barriers for entry, in both creating and distributing films, have never been lower. The line between a stills and a video camera has become increasingly blurry because most cameras are capable of shooting high-definition (HD) video. So, the chances are, if you have any kind of camera, you can use it to shoot video. However, just because it’s easier to get started, that doesn’t mean it’s any easier to make a great video. Here is a little...

In New Zealand, there’s a species of glowworm called Arachnocampa luminosa — commonly known as the New Zealand glowworm — that can be found in dark, wet caves. Photographer Joseph Michael made these insects the subject of a series of photos titled “Luminosity.” Michael brought his Nikon D810 into a number of limestone caves found on the North Island of New Zealand and captured long-exposure photographs of the glowworms scattered across the cave surface overhead. “The 30 million year old formations form a majestic backdrop to the bioluminescence of the glow-worms,” Michael writes. Chances are you have a tourist attraction in your town. Each day people crowd around and line up to take photographs of it. If you think of the most photographed tourist spots in the United States, you probably come up with the Statue of Liberty, San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge, or Grand Canyon. Thousands of pictures a year are taken at these destinations, however despite all of the mundane images some people can still produce incredibly unique and breathtaking photographs of these attractions. If you study the most impressive photos you will find consistent aspects that make the mundane...

But, really needing that new gear can be a very different issue. Let’s take a look at what you may, or may not, truly need as tools to create your art. Caught up in Marketing, or do you have a true need? Yes, those big number megapixel camera bodies can be very sexy, and every month it seems that there...

Just very nice for DPReview to have put up this Sunday Special, and after the Saturday one took care of the political venting. Raiatea, you are doing really well. I appreciated each of your photographs. I wonder if you might not like to take some art classes, serious ones, as these will further intensify how you see — just notice how it works especially in the hours after one of the classes… I might suggest life drawing, that fundamental, and possibly water color, tough but portable and enlightening. Others too. Who knows where paths can lead, and you’ll meet some more...

Designed for professional photographers, the app lets you easily create, sign, and send model and properly releases using your iPhone. “Releases are important because they protect you from potential lawsuits where people claim invasion of privacy or defamation after you’ve photographed them,” Snapwire says. “Model releases state that the person in the photo consents to be photographed, as well for you to use...

When people notice something interesting or beautiful these days, there’s often a natural impulse to pull out their smartphones and snap a photo of it, preserving that moment and memory. But “there’s a big problem associated with [this],” says The School of Life in the 3-minute video above. “We’re likely to be so busy taking the pictures we forget to look at the world whose beauty and interest prompted us to take a photograph in the first place.” Victorian English art critic John Ruskin noticed this problem in the early years of photography, and his recommendation was that everyone...

In 1990, the late American photographer Mary Ellen Mark captured a photo titled “Amanda and her Cousin Amy,” which showed a 9-year-old girl named Amanda smoking a cigarette while standing in a swimming pool with her 8-year-old cousin, Amy. It’s a striking photo that became one of Mark’s most famous works, but have you ever wondered what became of the two girls? After Mary Ellen Mark passed away late last month, NPR decided to dig into this particular photo and find out more about the subjects in the shot. They found out that the then 9-year-old smoker is now 34-year-old Amanda Marie...

The magic of an instant What is photography anyway? It is a fraction of a second of eternity that you try to capture, with better or worse technique, with deeper or shallower depth of field. But, in short, that’s all about photography, and it is this magic what makes photography an art. The essence of why many of us like photography, goes beyond what we can capture with our DSLR and show to others. It is the experience of the moment, and how one learns through the years to be aware of the present. It was just a few months ago when I learned what mindfulness was about, and I immediately...

The other day I was in the city and I was watching the clouds because they were moving so fast. It was a sign that bad weather was on the way, but I also knew the clouds would be a good opportunity to try some time lapse photography. There are many ways of taking a series of images to use for time lapse photography. My camera was setup on a tripod and set to take a photo every five seconds over 10 minutes. In total 120 images were taken, however that number is up to you. The other day I took 300 images to use for one. You can do this in various ways and it is best to check your camera manual...

c: Yeah, you keep telling yourself that what you claim makes “sense”. Sure seems to me that the F-18 was announced to be ready, and then a year or two later it was on carriers. Have no idea when it started, I’m sure it was in the late 1970s and I’m sure there were delays, but not ones that called the whole project into question. As I already said, the F22 flies, though it has an oxygen system which keeps killing pilots when it’s used at very high altitudes. If the aircraft is announced, approved, and then a schedule for integration into services is announced,...

After my public response to Taylor Swift’s open letter to Apple, I didn’t quite expect the phenomenal reaction it received. I knew it was provocative. I knew it was going to be risky and could possibly harm my chances of getting access to other concerts in future, but it needed to be said — out loud. When I thought hard about the possible consequences, and restrictions on my access to future work, I asked myself “What point is there in going to work if I can’t be paid for it, yet everyone else gets to benefit from my labor?”. The answer? There was nothing left to lose. When you’re...

Purchasing a new lens for your kit can be an expensive endeavor and the more information you know before making a purchase is always useful. You may have noticed that lens manufacturer sites tend to include what is known as a Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) chart. These charts help to give shooters a better idea of the glass’ performance, but they’re not the ‘end all’ answer for knowing whether a lens is good or not. Here’s an introductory guide on how to accurately read an MTF chart and how to take their readings into account for your purchase. How MTF Charts Help Photographers...

I’m a documentary wedding photographer, which means there’s a certain way that I work, and a certain style to the photography I produce. The end product of which is an accurate, beautiful document of the single most important day thus far in a couple’s life together. I want my clients to feel what they felt on their wedding day, years later when they’re reminiscing with their album. To do that successfully, I need to get in close — really close — to the action. But I don’t want people to feel uncomfortable being photographed, or indeed react to my presence. And almost as importantly,...

Hasselblad is a legendary brand name in the photo industry, but over the past few years the company has taken a hit in the eyes of some photographers by choosing to sell luxury, rebranded versions of Sony cameras. Starting with the Lunar back in 2012, Hasselblad made a habit of taking a popular Sony camera, redesigning the body with luxury materials, and then selling the “new camera” for multiples of the original price. But things are going to be different moving forward: Hasselblad is saying that it will no longer be spitting out rebadged Sony cameras in the future. In an interview...

When the weather takes a turn for the worse, don’t run for cover so fast. Look for photography subjects everywhere. Wet pavement, puddles, reflections, wind blowing the trees, evil looking storm clouds over the horizon – all can make for intriguing photographs. LX100 is poor in useability such as: – No ND filer – no good for video– Fixed LCD – not for high/low angle shoot– No real auto lens cap – slows down the flow– No built in flash– LX100 has noticeable lens flare When you rescale them both to the same size, both has more less the same IQ. Yes, LX100 has faster lens while you zoom in half way, but it may be not enough to justify the size. BTW, I like PASM dial better b/c PASM dial has more options than just PASM, and it is easier to change the mode as LX100 is not a “old” Leica M, but a...

In addition to fake DSLRs and fake memory cards, there are also fake flash units in camera bags around the world. We first shared a look at this issue back in September 2013, but today Canon issued a new warning about counterfeit versions of the Speedlite 600EX-RT, which was introduced in 2012. In a notice first published by The Digital Picture, Canon states that it has discovered the new fake flashes in circulation in the market and being sold through various online channels. The flashes weren’t designed nor manufactured by Canon, yet they look nearly identical to the actual flash...

My friend Joanne received the above inquiry via her website and sent it my way for help in responding. The following is my suggestion. Dear Prospective Client, Thank you for visiting my website. I am thrilled that you liked what you saw and reached out to me with an inquiry regarding my services. If I understand correctly, you want to provide me with an SD card that I will use and give back to you so that YOU can retouch and order prints yourself. Now, if that is all you want, you don’t need a professional photographer for that… You just need a mobile phone and selfie stick. Warmest...

Back on June 1st, 2015, landscape photographer Nicolaus Wegner was on the scene as a massive supercell formed over the Black Hills of South Dakota near Rapid City. As the stationary storm unfolded over several hours before Wegner’s eyes, he shot photos at one-second intervals with his Canon 5D Mark II and wide angle lenses. Afterward, he combined the photos into the 2-minute time-lapse short seen above, titled “Art of the Storm.” It was “truly one of the most beautiful natural weather phenomenon I have ever witnessed,” Wegner says. Sunset on Long Beach Island (NJ) I watched the future football Hall of Fame quarterbacks practicing on the sidelines just before the Super Bowl. Although they had thrown the football perhaps millions of times before, they were practicing their throwing before the big game. They believe in the old (but true) saying, “Practice makes perfect.” It’s important for us as photographers to continually practice our skills as well. Although we may have pressed the shutter button a million times, we need to be sure that we are always “ready for the big game”. Like the Super Bowl quarterbacks, it is...

Travel photography is certainly one of the most rewarding experiences you, as an image-maker, can have. You get to combine visiting amazing places, learning about other cultures, and, of course, your passion for taking photos, all at once. Piazza San Marco and Doge’s Palace with San Giorgio Maggiore behind – Venice, Italy However, certain famous locations, or populated cities can be frustrating. You arrive there to find out they are always crowded with visitors and tourists, making it almost impossible to shoot clean photos without intrusions. Granted, locations like these have been...

Tamron and Sigma have both announced updates for their lenses to provide full compatibility with Canon’s EOS 5DS and 5DS R models. Both firmware updates refer to behavior in live view shooting, something that has also caused problems in the Canon EOS Rebel T6s and T6i. This suggests that Canon’s latest models feature a change in the way they drive lenses. Tamron’s release states that for six of its lens models, autofocus doesn’t work with the 5DS/5DS R in live view. With Sigma’s lenses, the cameras do not operate at all in Live View mode....

Just buy an Arca Swiss or Really Right Stuff BH-55 and be done with it. My seemingly small BH-55 holds an insanely heavy 8×10 monorail rock steady with no play at all and doesn’t shake either, even when pointing it down to the ground at an angle. Even the super heavy duty Pan and Tilt heads can’t do that. The handles are hard to tighten and loosen, and under heavy loads, the camera always shifts a little before you get it tight enough. I used to think Ballheads weren’t practical for heavy loads, but the best ones are so superior to anything else if you want absolute...

Many digital cameras these days give you the option of selecting between the camera’s ‘native’ ISO range and a special ‘extended’ (or expanded) ISO range. If you are just starting out in photography, you may be confused about what each labeling means and whether or not there is a technical difference or if it just a bit of marketing. Today we’ll be taking a look at the differences between native ISO and extended ISO ranges. Native vs. Extended ISO Ranges Before explaining the differences between the two ranges, it is important to know exactly what the ISO setting on a camera changes...

Exposure settings for this shot: Shutter speed of 4 seconds; aperture at f/5.6; ISO 400. Night photography can be much more rewarding than photography during the day. Because everything looks different at night, you don’t need to go somewhere exotic to get great pictures. Bridges, attractions, and buildings are usually brightly lit at night, and places that might seem rather pedestrian during the day – can make stellar photography subjects at night. Further, you can take your time when photographing at night, more so than during the day. There are generally less people out, and you don’t...

By Mariam S Nowadays almost all photos are taken using various digital devices. In the era of paper photos, the main photo destructors were natural disasters like fires, and also such a phenomenon as discolouration. Modern digital photos face mainly the same dangers – fires, floods, and so on. Surprisingly, digital photos also have some equivalent to discoloration – degradation of a photo storage device over time. However, apart from these dangers inherited from paper predecessors, digital photos are subject to new specific dangers, for example: loss of photos due to a storage device...

We’ve all at one point been enamoured by the effects produced by tilt-shift or PC (perspective control) lenses. Even in wide-angle shots, the extremely narrow field of focus transforms the scene into a surreal miniature world. It can be hard to decipher whether it’s actually a close-up of a tiny model scene, or the result of the visual trickery that a tilt-shift lens can produce. The tilt-shift effect can be used on more than city street scenes. Use your imagination and be creative! Besides the nifty miniaturization effect, these high-end specialty lenses are imperative for professional...

Friends/family often ask about which camera to buy (as they do, when you’re a photographer), when they’re looking for a ‘DSLR’ it’s very difficult to justify an entry level one over a mirrorless camera now. I’m just not sure what they’re bringing to the market in that particular sector. The likes of Fuji, Sony, Panasonic etc now have more than adequate continuous AF, no potential focus issues, full AF/control via the LCD, extremely good kit lens and a usefully smaller form factor. It’s only the perceived ‘professionalism’ of a DSLR...
