5 Tips to Take Less Photos of Everything and Take More Photos That Mean Something

5 Tips to Take Less Photos of Everything and Take More Photos That Mean Something How many photos do you have from a recent holiday, that you just haven’t had time to organize? Or, have you come back from a dream vacation and your photos just don’t seem to match up with your memories? You are not alone, as this is an all too common issue, and both of these questions have their roots in a simple and easy to fix problem. Take fewer photos, not more! I mean this literally, but also figuratively. Yes, overall take fewer photos. But, in reality this is a lesson in becoming more conscious of your photography. What is the point of the photo? Why are you clicking the shutter at...

Edelkrone launches collapsible PocketSkater 2 for DSLR videographers

While cool and (presumably) functional, neither the VidPro nor the Monoprice even remotely fit in a pocket. Both have very simple designs, and I seriously doubt the manufacturing requires sophisticated parts design and molding like Edelkrone. Both designs are cookie cutter designs using skateboard wheels. OTOH, Edelkrone is a second generation design with many optimizations (custom mini wheels, custom three wheel design, custom compact folding form factor, and industrial strength aluminum parts). I have no affiliation with Edelkrone except as a satisfied customer… including their 1G...

Cascable iOS app offers remote control of WiFi-enabled cameras

Cascable iOS app offers remote control of WiFi-enabled cameras Late last week saw the introduction of Cascable to the Apple App store, an iOS app for remote controlling Wi-Fi-enabled cameras. Cascable allows Apple device users an alternative way to access and control their W-iFi enabled camera via an iPhone or iPad, and extends shutter control to the Apple Watch. At the time of launch only Canon EOS cameras with integrated Wi-Fi are supported, but Cascable says it will be expanding its compatibility to include others manufacturers ‘soon.’  The app’s interface includes access to settings like exposure, timers, and auto focus...

Opinion: Did Sony just do the impossible?

Opinion: Did Sony just do the impossible? June 10, 2015 was a fun day. It saw the announcement of the Sony a7R II, along with a the new 1″-type stacked sensors in the company’s updated releases of the popular RX100 and RX10 camera lines. Our Editor Barnaby Britton was lucky enough to be at the launch event to witness the announcements in person, and with every text message he sent me about a new feature Sony was introducing in the a7R II, I couldn’t help but feel like a kid in a candy shop being given far more candy than I’d expected. But like a greedy child, I was quite happy to take...

Interview: Kimio Maki of Sony – ‘the customer’s voice is the most important data for me’

Interview: Kimio Maki of Sony – ‘the customer’s voice is the most important data for me’ Kimio Maki, Senior General Manager of the Digital Imaging Business Group, Sony Corporation. Pictured here at the New York launch of the Alpha a7R II, and Cyber-shot RX100 IV and RX10 II. Sony shook up the camera industry recently with the launch of three new cameras – the Alpha a7R II, Cyber-shot RX100 IV and RX10 II. We were in New York for the launch event, and after the dust had settled we sat down with Kimio Maki, Senior General Manager of Sony’s Digital Imaging Business Group. In our interview, we spoke with Mr. Maki about the process of designing the...

Paparazzi shots are taken WITHOUT people’s consent! While for Cosplay, it IS part of cosplaying to be photographed! No one makes a cosplay to wear it in front of the mirror and then put it in the wardrobe again. You DO need a model release if you are going to use it for commercial purposes (like releasing a book), surely. For web usage, no you don’t need a release. It’s a consensual thing, based on goodwill. As such, of course, if the person asks the photographer to remove the picture from his/her website, then that should be done. Source Article from...

A Sony A7 Flattened by a Truck Can Still Sell for $20

A Sony A7 Flattened by a Truck Can Still Sell for $20 Here’s a random tip: if your $1,000 camera ever gets run over by a truck, don’t just throw the crushed parts in the trash. sonyalpharumors reports that one unlucky owner of a flattened Sony a7 mirrorless camera still managed to sell the parts and the original box on eBay for $20 with an extra $18.65 for shipping. Not bad, considering what the deceased camera looks like. It’s interesting that someone would still pay nearly $40 for the parts. Source Article from...

Cameras of the Future Will Be Able to Identify Things They See

Cameras of the Future Will Be Able to Identify Things They See One of the emerging trends in the world of photography is the idea of automated recognition and tagging of things found in photographs. Flickr can now suggest autotags for your photos, and Google’s new Photos service lets you search through your unlabeled photos using advanced image recognition. The same technologies are coming for real-time camera features as well. Qualcomm is working on a system called SceneDetect that lets cameras recognize what they’re looking at in real time. Here’s a short demo video showing how quickly Qualcomm’s system can identify objects in scenes and...

Do I Need a Photo Release For That?

Do I Need a Photo Release For That? With the increasing presence of quality Smartphone cameras and affordable, pro-grade compact digital cameras, there are more people than ever who have the power of taking photos. But how many people are aware of the legal constraints that come with being a photographer, even on a hobby or amateur basis? Perhaps more importantly, how many of us know when it’s legally okay, or not okay, for someone to snap a photo of ourselves? The answers to these questions are important for both photographers and photo subjects to know, so let’s examine some of the laws that have to do with photography....

10 Essential Pieces of Gear you Need for Landscape Photography If you are interested in going out and getting some high quality landscape photographs, here’s a comprehensive list of items you will either want to consider, or must have, in order to increase your chances of getting some keepers: #1 – The Internet Whenever I start to plan a photo shoot to a particular location, I usually begin by googling the area. Family Threatened After Photo Shoot on Train Tracks

Family Threatened After Photo Shoot on Train Tracks A family in Wisconsin says that they’ve received threats online after pictures from a recent family photo shoot went viral. The shots show the family dressed up in superhero costumes and acting out a rescue scene on railroad tracks. There have been numerous stories in recent years of photographers, newlyweds, and film crews having fatal accidents or close calls while doing a shoot on tracks, as trains often travel so fast that people have little time to react before being struck. Mike and Roxanne Daly of Hartford, Wisconsin, didn’t get the memo though, and recently picked train tracks...

Testing a Waterproof Pelican 1510 Case by Dunking it in a Swimming Pool

Testing a Waterproof Pelican 1510 Case by Dunking it in a Swimming Pool Pelican’s $170 1510 carry on case is advertised as a durable, dustproof, and watertight option for hauling your camera equipment from place to place, but how well does it actually keep water out? Nathan Taylor decided to find out with a personal test in a swimming pool. He shares his experiment and findings in the 1-minute video above. “I tested if the Pelican cases really are waterproof/watertight by taking it for a swim. Turns out they are,” Taylor tells PetaPixel. “This isn’t an endorsement video, I just had to see it to believe it.” “I dunked this thing over and over, and put all...

Samsung’s ‘Safety Truck’ Features a Camera and Live View Display

Samsung’s ‘Safety Truck’ Features a Camera and Live View Display Samsung wants to help make roads safer by incorporating some camera technology into semi-trailer trucks. By adding a front camera and a giant rear “live view” display to the trucks, Samsung’s ‘Safety Truck’ project makes it easier for drivers to see “through” the trucks and know when it’s safe to pass. According to the statistics, an average of one person in Argentina dies every hour to a traffic accident, and many of those deaths are caused by reckless passing on the country’s two-lane roads. Samsung wants to use its technology to make this type of passing safer and easier for...

The Photographers Ephemeris (TPE) Versus PlanIt! for Photographers

The Photographers Ephemeris (TPE) Versus PlanIt! for Photographers Note: I have no affiliation with either program. TPE is probably the best known ephemeris application used by photographers. There is, however, a new kid on the block, PlanIt! for photographers. While TPE does a good job of being a basic ephemeris, it ends there. Shortcomings or challenges with TPE Like all good photographers, you’re planning a future shot of the moon rise. You consult TPE for the rise time at your selected location and, in due course, set off with plenty of time to prepare your gear. Comes the appointed time and the moon doesn’t show! TPE got the moon rise time over the...

Behind the Shot: Watery Grave

Behind the Shot: Watery Grave In this article I’ll take you to a grizzly scene I encountered, which enabled me to produce quite a rare shot. This image is special to me for two reasons: First of all, it’s a very unique image, telling a story you don’t come across very often. Secondly, I’ve had to put in work I usually don’t do when it comes to post-processing, to make it look right. All in all, I’m happy with the result, and it has won good acclaim in international competitions and publications. ‘Watery Grave’, Grundarfjörður, February 2013 The shot was...

Photographer Captures Tiny Lightning Storms with a Mini Tesla Coil

Photographer Captures Tiny Lightning Storms with a Mini Tesla Coil A violet ray is an antique electrotherapy medical device invented by Nikola Tesla that’s essentially a portable tesla coil. Altdorf, Germany-based photographer Marc Simon Frei purchased a unit from 1920 on eBay and customized it for experiments with photographing electricity at home. Frei generated electrical discharges in various ways and forms, and then captured them using a Nikon Df, a macro extension tube, and a Nikon 50mm f/1.8 lens. “Don’t try this at home,” Frei says, “the high frequency voltage could damage your equipment.” Bringing his camera close to the apparatus also...

Vincent Van Gogh Found in a Photo from 1887

Vincent Van Gogh Found in a Photo from 1887 This group photo from 1887 is reportedly the first photo ever found of Vincent Van Gogh after he became an artist. If experts are correct, then the man third from the left (and smoking a pipe) is the legendary artist himself. Over at the magazine L’Oeil de la Photographie (“The Eye of Photography”), French photo expert Serge Plantureux writes that the photo first came to his attention after it was brought to him by two individuals who had purchased it at an estate sale. The owners had long been interested in 19th century artists, and they believed that they recognized faces in the...

Teardown: A Look at the Guts of the Canon 5DS

Teardown: A Look at the Guts of the Canon 5DS When my company LensRentals first got the first Canon 5Ds and 5DSR cameras in stock, we immediately started screaming that we wanted to take one apart. It turns out we received enough 5Ds cameras to let us have a day with one to do just that. Of course, we don’t expect to find out anything amazing and revealing. We expect it will look pretty much like the Canon 5DIII and 7DII on the inside. But hey, you never know. Plus we’ll be repairing these soon enough, so we might as well find our way around now. From the outside looking in, there’s not a lot of difference in appearance from the...

20 Inspiring Quotes About What Photography Is

20 Inspiring Quotes About What Photography Is Photography allows one to capture the world around them with the press of a shutter. From a scientific perspective, it is the act of recording light either electronically or chemically. However, this tells us nothing about the heart of photography and what it truly means to us on a personal level. We have assembled a list of 20 great quotes from notable photographers, past and present, that answers the simple question: “What is photography?”  “Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving. What you have caught on film is captured forever… it remembers little things, long...

Opinion: The future of DSLR or: how I learned to stop worrying and love the ILC

Opinion: The future of DSLR or: how I learned to stop worrying and love the ILC Convergence has become something of a buzzword in the industry. Unhelpfully, this is used by different people to mean one of several things, including the convergence of DSLR and mirrorless technologies or the convergence of stills and video cameras. (Few people are in a comfortable enough position to even joke about the convergence of digital and film camera sales.) It’s the first of these options that has had me thinking of late. Although mirrorless cameras have historically been seen as an entirely distinct type of camera, that difference is narrowing. Obviously...

‘Apotheosis’ Time-Lapse Captures the Northern Lights During a Solar Maximum

‘Apotheosis’ Time-Lapse Captures the Northern Lights During a Solar Maximum Our sun goes through a solar cycle with an average length of 11 years, and the period of greatest solar activity during each cycle is called the solar maximum. Photographer Henry Jun Wah Lee visited Iceland during the latest solar maximum and shot photos for this dazzling time-lapse film titled “Apotheosis.” Massive solar flares often occur during a solar maximum, which causes intense auroras that are visible from places in the world that usually don’t see northern or southern lights. Lee was in Iceland on March 17th, 2015, when a severe solar storm hit Earth and covered the night sky...

Corbis Charges Hefty Fees for Freely Available Public Domain Photos

Corbis Charges Hefty Fees for Freely Available Public Domain Photos If you come across any photograph published in the US before 1923, you’re free to use it for whatever purpose you’d like, with or without permission, and with or without attribution. Why? Because its copyright has expired and it’s public domain. Strangely enough, sometimes free public domain photos get sold as stock photos, and those who don’t know any better may pay large sums to use something they could have used for free. John C. Dvorak points this out in a PC Magazine article he wrote about Adobe’s new stock service, saying he’s “stunned by the number of free public domain images...

How’s Your Color Vision? This Simple Game Will Tell You

How’s Your Color Vision? This Simple Game Will Tell You Most of you have probably spent a considerable amount of time staring at the colors of photos in programs like Photoshop, but how good are your eyes at discerning colors? iGame’s Eye Test is a simple online test that will assess the quality of your color perception through a simple game format. The game works as follows: you’re presented with a grid of colored boxes. All the boxes are the exact same color except one — find the irregular box and click it to move onto the next grid. Each grid is harder than the one before it, and you have 15 seconds on each grid to make your decision....

3 Secrets for Creating Beautiful Nature Photos

3 Secrets for Creating Beautiful Nature Photos Secret #1 Start with you What elements of nature do you particularly like? You may already be clear on this; but even if you are, write it down, as something magical happens when you get things out of your head and living in front of you on paper. Are you a flowers person? Do you like trees? How about specific elements of nature, for example, mushrooms on forest floors? No answer is a silly answer – just write them all down, no-one is screening what you say. You have your own take on the world and you need to work out what it is. Then you’ll make nature photos that have a little piece of you...

6 Tips Using Visual Weight to Improve Your Composition

6 Tips Using Visual Weight to Improve Your Composition Andrew’s newest ebook Mastering Composition is now on special for a limited time only at Snapndeals. Visual weight (also called visual mass) is the principle that some elements of the photo pull the eye more than others. Take a look at the portrait below. Where does your eye go? It should go straight to the eyes, because they have the most visual weight. They are the element exerting the greatest pull. Notice that the model’s eyes are not positioned on the traditional intersection points created by the rule of thirds. That doesn’t stop them from pulling the eye, although it could be argued...

Video Overview: Leica Q

We had the chance recently to spend some time shooting with the Leica Q. The Q is a rangefinder-style camera that sports a 28mm F1.7 fixed lens and a 24MP full-frame CMOS sensor. The DPReview staff was quite enamored with the Q, both in a practical sense, as well as aesthetically. As such, we decided to share some of our first impressions, while also taking a closer look at what makes the Q so appealing. The Q’s 28mm F1.7 lens and full-frame 24MP sensor have been optimized for one another, resulting in incredibly sharp images, edge to edge. In general, the Q seems...

Are you in Seattle? Come and ask us questions this Saturday! If you’re in the Seattle area, don’t miss an opportunity to sit down on Saturday with DPReview editors Barney and Rishi. They will be participating in a panel discussion at Glazer’s Camera in Seattle at 4pm (PT) entitled ‘What Happens Next?’ Hosted by photographer and tutor John Greengo, the panel will be taking questions on video and stills convergence, and the decreasing performance gap between DSLRs and mirrorless cameras. Even if you can’t make it in person, you can still submit questions. We’re hoping to have the discussion...

Analysis: DxO ONE – the World’s ‘First Truly Connected Camera’

Analysis: DxO ONE – the World’s ‘First Truly Connected Camera’ The DxO ONE, announced today, is a ground-breaking camera in an extremely small package, one that connects to your iPhone via a Lightning adapter built quite cleverly right into the unit. Weighing in at 3.8 oz (108g) and only 2.65″ tall, the DxO ONE is small enough to fit in your pocket (it’s only 1.9″ wide x 1″ deep), yet packs a punch with its 1″-type BSI-CMOS sensor, likely the same one found in the Sony Cyber-shot RX100 III. That means great low light sensitivity due to the BSI design, and fantastic Raw dynamic range due to the fact that...

#1 in France: Hands-on with DxO ONE

To me the “fail” in it is the fact that you need to “assemble” it (attach it to the phone, unlock the phone, launch the app etc..) if you want a viewfinder and control over shooting parameters. Sony’s QX100 at least is untethered or attached in a less precarious fashion. Also the ONE has a similar FOV as the iPhone’s built in camera lens. And for a phone the camera is quite decent with all downsides of a small sensor, but it’s not a shoddy performer. So what exactly does the ONE offer aside from higher image quality at the expense of 600$?Mind you...

Going solo: DxO introduces 20MP ‘ONE’ connected camera

Going solo: DxO introduces 20MP ‘ONE’ connected camera DxO has unveiled its first image capture device, called simply DxO ONE. Designed to be used in tandem with an iPhone, the ONE features a 1″-type 20.2MP CMOS sensor, integrated lightning connector and 32mm equivalent F1.8 lens. It relies on a connected iPhone or iPad to provide a viewfinder and control interface by way of a free app. Conceptually it’s not unlike Sony’s QX-series devices, though the ONE is unique in offering a physical connection to a mobile device, and only supports Apple products. That connector presents a key difference between...

Vietnamese Photojournalist Apologizes for ‘Shopped War Photo Vietnamese photojournalist Doan Cong Tinh is apologizing for a Photoshopped Vietnam War photo that he “mistakenly” sent out and had published in an international exhibition.Thanh Nien Daily reports that the photo showed North Vietnamese soldiers climbing a rope near a waterfall in 1970. It was on display last year at the International Photojournalism Festival of Perpignan (Visa pour l’image Perpignan) in France, and then later published in an online gallery by the New York Times. Questions about the photograph were first raised by Danish photographer Jorn Stjerneklar, who paid a visit...

Creating a Surreal Musician Portrait with a Sideways Photo and Photoshop

Creating a Surreal Musician Portrait with a Sideways Photo and Photoshop Photographer Antti Karppinen was recently hired to do a portrait photo shoot with Cardiff-based singer and songwriter Jammy Harris. For one of the shots, Karppinen decided to create a mind-bending image of Harris sitting on a stone ledge over rough waters using a creative perspective and photo-manipulation. Karppinen started out by scouting out a suitable location and sketching out the photo concept he had in mind: Next, Karppinen photographed Harris lying down on the ground horizontally against the stone bench: The photographer then rotated the image, filled in the background and sky...

The New Medium: exhibiting the first photographs ever taken in India

The New Medium: exhibiting the first photographs ever taken in India The camera reached India in around 1855. A new photography exhibition in the heart of London explores what India’s first photographs have to say about the world’s newest superpower. It is a cool midsummer’s evening in Mayfair’s Cork Street – the nucleus of London’s contemporary art world. Number 33 is the professional home of Prahlad Bubbar – collector of Indian and Islamic art – and the location of his new exhibition, The New Medium: Photography in India 1855-1930. The New Medium is a neat survey of the birth and rise of photography as a major art form in...

Ricoh GR II: What’s new and what does it mean?

I’ve been using GRD since 2005, even before it was officially released in US. I loved that little camera a lot and took close to 30k pictures with it, literally until that camera fall apart and flash burned down. It was by far my most used camera, and I had so many of them (perhaps E1 was close second). Yes I’d agree this is very small upgrade, However, whats important that they still support this model and looks like have all of the intentions to keep it going. What makes this camera special over anything else is – Fit, Form and Function. Keep it up Ricoh, and hopefully in...

Ricoh GR II adds Wi-Fi and not much else to GR feature set

It maintains nearly all of the original GR’s specifications, including a 16MP sensor and 28mm F2.8 lens, but adds Wi-Fi and NFC to the feature set. Other aspects of the camera have seen minor improvements over the preceding model, including an increased 1/2500 sec shutter speed at maximum aperture, some white balance tweaks, increased buffer depth to 10 frames for 4 fps Raw shooting, and continuous or spot AF modes in...

Olympus preparing to bring updated OM-D-like Stylus 1s to UK market Olympus has announced that the Stylus 1s compact superzoom will be coming to the UK in early summer, and will cost £429.99. The camera, an updated version of the original Stylus 1, has already been on sale in Japan since the end of 2014 and was launched in the USA in April this year. This forthcoming version will come pre-loaded with the latest Stylus 1 firmware, which allows compatibility with a company’s WCON-08X 0.8x wide angle converter (via adapter CLA-14), taking the 28-200mm (equiv) focal range of the camera’s lens to 22.4mm, while maintaining the F2.8 maximum...

2015 Superzoom Camera Roundup

2015 Superzoom Camera Roundup While compact cameras sales continue to slide due to the rise of the smartphone, ‘bridge cameras’ remain popular. Bridge cameras offer zoom lenses exceeding 50X in a body that resembles a DSLR, and more expensive models usually include electronic viewfinders and manual exposure controls. While the megapixel race has slowly come to a halt, there’s a different kind of battle going on, and that’s over zoom power. Ten years ago superzooms commonly had 10X and 12X lenses, and in 2015 the average is around 50X. Late last year Canon’s PowerShot SX60 HS hit 65X and...

In a brief note on the company website Ricoh apologizes to customers who are waiting for the lens, and says that a design change has been required ‘in order to achieve the extremely high quality of the star lens.’ The Pentax Star series...

The Photocaptionist on David Fathi’s Anecdotal

The Photocaptionist, a platform set up by Federica Chiocchetti devoted to the relationship between images and words, presents a monthly series of photo-literary explorations. Here, she responds to an image from David Fathi’s series Anecdotal, exploring the myths and metaphors surrounding the atomic bomb. The Photocaptionist pairs an image from David Fathi’s series Anecdotal with a quote by Vice Admiral Blandy, Commander of the Operation Crossroads, quoted in Gerard J. DeGroot, The Bomb: A Life, 2005: “The bomb will not start a chain reaction in the water converting...

Delicate Demons: do women belong in the home?

Delicate Demons: do women belong in the home? A new collaborative series from two Finnish photographers transgresses traditional notions of women belonging in the home. Delicate Demons is a collaborative, ongoing project between Finnish photographers Satu Haavisto and Aino Kannisto, in which women are meticulously staged in domestic spaces. The spaces in the photographs are tight, with a room corner in most of the scenes, compressing the viewer and the subject into an uncomfortably proximal relationship and emphasising the sense of home as a potentially oppressive place. The women appear as mysterious characters,...

Sony adds XAVC S and high bitrate video to a6000

I am a photographer that is actually a portraitist, and I print some of my pictures in big (if not huge) sizes, so resolution matter in this case. Not noise, if stochastic, I could live with that, the same way I accepted noise in film, if it doesn’t look like a digital artefact. Noise is not an issue if the truth of the subject appears clearly, even behind it. Source Article from...

The Tesseract Scene in Interstellar was Shot Using a Physical Set

The Tesseract Scene in Interstellar was Shot Using a Physical Set It’s always neat when photographers and film directors opt for creative and ambitious physical sets and effects rather than relying primarily on computer generated imagery. One interesting recent example is the mind-bending tesseract scene in the hit movie Interstellar. Rather than portray time as a dimension using CGI, director Christopher Nolan and his crew built a giant and complex physical set. Here’s a 9-minute behind-the-scenes video in which Nolan and company talk about how the set came together after months of brainstorming, experimentation, model building, and set building....

A similarly strange wildlife shot has emerged, and this one is making the rounds on the Web as well. It’s a bizarre photo of a raccoon riding on the back of an alligator in a river. The Florida Times-Union reports that the picture was captured this weekend by a man named Richard Jones who was exploring the Oklawaha River in central Florida with his family. Jones’ son made a sound that spooked the raccoon, causing it to hop onto the alligator. “My son went through some palm fronds to catch a...

Canon Patents an EF 10mm f/2.8 Lens, an Ultra-Ultra-Wide Prime

Canon Patents an EF 10mm f/2.8 Lens, an Ultra-Ultra-Wide Prime Canon may be planning to create one of the world’s widest non-fisheye prime lenses. A new patent shows the internal design of a 10mm f/2.8 lens for full frame sensors. The Japanese website Egami spotted the patent (#2015-102620), which was published earlier this month. There aren’t many details except for the basic fact that Canon filed a patent for this lens back in 2013. Earlier this year, Canon already announced a new ultra-wide zoom lens, the Canon 11-24mm f/4L, which boasts the widest angle of view ever achieved for a rectilinear (i.e. a lens that yields straight features) full...

Guide to Growing a Large Online Audience for Photographers

Guide to Growing a Large Online Audience for Photographers In this article, learn about how you can grow an online following that will enable you to profile your work, make important new contacts, and eventually monetize your photography. Through growing my online following I have successfully monetized a career in travel photography, visiting amazing destinations like Quebec, Canada. First, you need to decide on the best way to share your work. Is it a blog, a social media platform, or a combination of the two? Which social media platforms lend themselves best to photography? How many should you have? There are slight nuances between all social...

How to Pose Groups for Portrait Photography

How to Pose Groups for Portrait Photography For many years the gold standard for posing groups looked just like my first grade school photo. Everybody would be lined up and asked to stand as awkwardly as possible, feet together and for the lucky ones in the front, hands clasped together in their laps. The photographer would shoot two frames (one for safety) and count every one in with a “1..2..3…say cheese” my grade one teacher Mrs. Witchell was way too cool to do cheese. She busted out her own version of Blue Steel instead. Respect. Sadly this style of posing large groups is still pretty much the norm. But with some careful planning,...

The female derobed: Neola McDavid’s untainted nudes

Denudate 2015 is a response to the objectification of women – a stripped-back representation of the female form, uninfluenced by society’s notions of femininity. It is currently on exhibit at the Free Range Graduate Art and Design Show. “Trust is very important when you ask someone to take their clothes off so you can photograph them nude,” says Neola Loretta McDavid, who will soon graduate from the University of Roehampton with a BA Honours in Photography. “Your subjects need to have confidence in you as a photographer, and they need to feel comfortable in themselves.”...

Panasonic announces Lumix DMC-CM1 US pricing and availability

Panasonic announces Lumix DMC-CM1 US pricing and availability Earlier this year, Panasonic announced that its hybrid smartphone/compact would be coming to the US sometime this summer. That time is now – the Panasonic Lumix DMC-CM1 is currently on sale in the US to the tune of $1000 unlocked for GSM networks. It will ship with Android 4.4 KitKat, though an update to 5.0 Lollipop will be available.  You’ve probably heard of the device, but in case you missed it the CM1 offers smartphone specifications an enthusiast could only dream of prior to its launch. This includes a 20MP 1-inch CMOS sensor, 28mm equivalent F2.8 Leica...

Meta35 pulls metadata from film cameras

Meta35 pulls metadata from film cameras Promote Systems has introduced its new Meta35 dongle and software, which together allow certain compatible film cameras to be connected to a laptop for metadata transfer. Supported film cameras include the Canon EOS 1V, Nikon F5, F6, F100, N90 and N90s, and the Minolta Maxxum 7 and 9.  Meta35 works by connecting a compatible camera with a laptop using the Meta35 cable and dongle. After the camera is turned on and the software is loaded, the camera will appear in the Meta35 software. Clicking ‘Import’ results in Meta35 pulling whatever metadata is provided by...

Return of the Super Rebel: Canon EOS Rebel T6s (760D) in-depth review

This seems like Canon’s answer to the Nikon D5500. With only 1080p30 video and no IBIS, I’ll stick with my Sony A65. The Nikon looks like a better deal to me, since it’s $100 less and offers almost everything this Canon has, plus a bunch of functionality that Canons don’t have. Frankly, I think I’d get the older Nikon D5300, which has Wi-Fi and does 1080p60 for $200 less. The only things these newer cameras seem to have that’s new is the NFC and the touch screen. Of course this new Canon does have that status LCD on top, which is definitely a nice feature,...

Readers’ Showcase: Martin Kozak

those pictures are really interesting. I can say, the artistic and creative way of shooting is something only the photographer can find in his head by planning ahead where and how to shoot, but the technical aspect (lenses and camera) is a very important factor. I could shoot some nice pictures with my APS-C camera and kit lens, but once I went fullframe and got some fast lenses, I realized there is a lot more that can be done with the right tools, but I didn’t know what I was capable of because I didn’t had access to those tools in the first place. Here we see the best example....

This Rare Leica Noctilux 50mm f/1 Lens Comes with Its Own Humidor

This Rare Leica Noctilux 50mm f/1 Lens Comes with Its Own Humidor Here’s one way to identify a pricey lens: it comes with a dedicated luxury humidor for humidity control. Back in 2008, as Leica was ending a manufacturing run of its Noctilux 50mm f/1 lens, the company decided to release the last 100 units as a special edition. Each of the lenses was shipped with a special humidity control box crafted in Paris, France, by Elie Bleu, which makes high-end humidors for cigar aficionados. Elie Bleu humidors often sell for between $2,000 to $5,000 by themselves, so the box greatly increased the value of this bundle. The unit was originally priced at...

Photographer Captures the Ruins of the Soviet Space Shuttle Program

Photographer Captures the Ruins of the Soviet Space Shuttle Program Russian urban exploration photographer Ralph Mirebs recently paid a visit to the Baikonur Cosmodrome, where inside a giant abandoned hangar are decaying remnants of prototypes from the Soviet space shuttle program.Gizmodo writes that the Buran program was in operation for nearly two decades from 1974 to 1993. One automated orbital flight resulted from the extensive program, but the project was shuttered when the Soviet Union collapsed. Mirebs went into the massive 62-meter (~203 foot) tall hangar and captured a fascinating series of photos showing the detail and complexity of a space...

Warning: Watch Out for Fake Memory Cards on eBay

Warning: Watch Out for Fake Memory Cards on eBay Always buy your memory cards from reputable sources. Go for a “sweet deal” through a place like eBay, and you could be in for a lot of pain and embarrassment. Case in point: Virginia Beach photographer Bryan Myhr tells us he recently purchased what he thought was a 64GB Transcend SD card from an eBay seller. Only after the card corrupted the first time he used it did he realize that something was very wrong. The eBay seller, named discountmemorysticks, had 68 reviews, boasted a 97.7% positive user feedback. and was based out of New Hampshire. Sounds pretty legit, right? Well, after...

Let’s face it – unless you are working with professional models who know exactly what to do, and how to pose in front of the camera with little to no direction from the photographer, most of your clients, especially women are self-conscious and stiff the moment they get in front of the camera. Nervous laughs and fidgety hands are all signs that they are...

How to Shoot Images and Use Merge to HDR in Lightroom 6

Master teacher Phil Steele brings us a video on how to shoot bracketed images and merge them into and HDR image using the new Merge to HDR function in Lightroom 6 (or CC). HDR is something that gets a bit of a bad rap and people seem to either love it or hate it. It’s one of those extreme things like opera and sushi. But the new Merge to HDR feature, inside Lightroom, makes it easy to try it and make realistic looking images in a snap – without the need for any other software or plugins. Let’s have a look at Phil’s HDR shooting and LR processing tips: If you enjoyed that and want to learn...

Hometown America: Chris Gravett’s undiscovered Arkansas

“I didn’t have the balls to study photography in my 20s,” says Chris Gravett. The recent graduate’s series on a small town in Arkansas is currently on show as part of the Free Range Graduate Art and Design Show at The Old Truman Brewery. “I Googled myself, as you do, and accidently added an ‘e’ to the end of my name,” says 64-year-old recent graduate Chris Gravett. “The city of Gravette in northwest Arkansas came up. Wikipedia says it has a population of 2300 – 90% white, with 23 churches, in an area of four square miles. I thought it was such a...

This Guy Photographed the ISS from an Airplane at 40,000 Feet

This Guy Photographed the ISS from an Airplane at 40,000 Feet This is impressive: photographer and aspiring astronaut Trevor Mahlmann was sitting in the seat of an airplane at 40,000 feet this past Tuesday when he managed to plan and shoot this stacked long-exposure photo showing the International Space Station whizzing by.Mahlmann writes on his blog that he was on a Southwest flight from New York to Chicago when he had a thought: “Hey, what if the ISS is going to pass over me while I am flying?” Using the airplane’s Wi-Fi, he logged into an ISS tracking website called Heavens-Above. Lo and behold, the site showed that the space station would be...

Hasselblad Lusso to be a Luxury Rebranded Sony a7R

Hasselblad Lusso to be a Luxury Rebranded Sony a7R Hasselblad’s luxury rebrands of Sony cameras may elicit jeers from the photography community, but it seems that sales are doing well enough for Hasselblad to keep doing more of the same. New photos show that Hasselblad is on the verge of launching yet another line: the Lusso. Based on specs, it appears this camera will be a rebranded version of the popular Sony a7R. A microsite has already appeared on Hasselblad’s Chinese website, which shows a7R specs and the fact that the camera will be bundled with a 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. Here’s what the Sony a7R and 24-70mm Carl Zeiss lens look...

Homemade Petzval Swirl Bokeh with a 50mm Lens

Homemade Petzval Swirl Bokeh with a 50mm Lens Here’s a quick look at how I created some homemade “petzval swirl” bokeh that mimics photos taken with the new Petzval 58 Bokeh Control Art lens. Basically, on my 50mm 1.8 prime lens (yes, changing the focal length will mess this up!) I cut a small hole in light-proof paper over my lens hood, and taped it together, to produce some cheapo Petzval bokeh that swirls the background at wide apertures. Vignetting is a problem, however. You may have to change the size of the hole in the paper to remove this. It’s cheap, works pretty well… but at the cost of looks. It’s dumb, I get that, but...

How Kowa Makes Its Micro Four Thirds Lenses

How Kowa Makes Its Micro Four Thirds Lenses Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how Japanese lens maker Kowa creates its Prominar line of lenses for Micro Four Thirds cameras. The 3-minute “how it’s made” video above steps through each of the stages of manufacturing, from designing the lenses on a computer to putting the components together into a final product and testing its optical qualities. Kowa is a multinational company that has its hands in a number of different industries. Its optics division was launched in 1952, and originally produced spotting scopes for shooting. Late last year, the company kicked off a Prominar...

A Fair Fight? Shooting Film in the Digital Age (A Rebuttal)

A Fair Fight? Shooting Film in the Digital Age (A Rebuttal) I wish I hadn’t, but the other day I stumbled across an essay on PetaPixel entitled 12 Reasons  Photographers Still Choose to Shoot Film over Digital. Bravely, the writer had polled his associates who shoot film and culled their responses down to a dandy dozen. I shook my head sadly, because I’d heard them all many times before. But the worst part came next. I scrolled down to the comments section. I tried mightily to avert my eyes, but I couldn’t, and the lurid spectacle of grown men and women (but mostly men) verbally beating the living daylights out of each other while thousands...

Review: Voeloon V58 Speedlight for Canon

Review: Voeloon V58 Speedlight for Canon I’m going to start with a small admission… I’ve always been about brand-name stuff. There, I said it… I have had Canon cameras since the a5 (it was the small, boxy predecessor of the Ixus range) and before that, Nikon film cameras (and during, come to think of it) and have always had the mindset that I should purchase Canon lenses for my Canon cameras, always thought that I should buy well known lights and tripods and… (the list, it goes on and on) More recently though, I’ve had less disposable cash (kids! yay) and when you add that to getting increasingly more creative through experience...

If you miss any make sure you subscribe to our newsletter and you’ll get a reminder of all our articles once a week. When doing a portrait there is a lot to think about. Victorian photographs of the abandoned Dreamland amusement park in Margate, Kent

Victorian photographs of the abandoned Dreamland amusement park in Margate, Kent This month, Dreamland Margate will open to the public again for the first time in more than a decade. Photographer Rob Ball documented Britain’s oldest amusement park in the years leading up to its renovation. Ahead of a forthcoming exhibition at The Photographers’ Gallery and a book published by Dewi Lewis, Ball talks about the project. At its peak in the 1960s, Dreamland Margate thronged with visitors. Millions of them, young and old, families and couples, piled into the seaside amusement park to laugh, flirt, ride the famous Scenic Railway rollercoaster, try their...

Week in Review: Sony FTW

The fact that Leica built a factory in 2014 doesn’t tell us anything about its revenue, its operating expenses, or how it paid for the new factory. Was it financed, was it paid for with cash? If so, how does that impact Leica’s asset strength? My point is that you came here throwing around financial “facts” with no insight to them. I am in no way stating that Leica isn’t operating at a small margin, but neither of us has any facts to support that assertion. Also, it really needs to be said that Leica is absolutely puny in size compared to a giant like Sony....

Triggertrap expands compatibility to Apple Watch and Pebble smartwatches Triggertrap has updated its Triggertrap Mobile app to make it compatible with the new Apple Watch and Pebble range of smartwatches. Video Feature: Josh Trujillo and the Canon PowerShot G7 X in New Mexico

A very nice job, this video, introducing a place, a camera, and a DPReview personality a little better, besides Josh himself. Would think it underlines photographic depth of accomplishments of Canon in the g7x, not least the advantages in the longer focal length abilities of its lens. Yorkshire topic. Well, there is a commonality I think , with there and New Mexico having a sense of wide open spaces, and if quite differently so, distinct regional personalities. I am thinking now of prairie and hillsides, along the Ribble around the Forest of Bowland, where cattle live also, and on to Settle...

Shutterfly’s new TripPix app lets iPhone users order albums

Those who use the service can add things like maps with pins and icons to the album, and choose from different covers. TripPix is only available for iOS. According to Shutterfly, it takes approximately 5 minutes to create an album with TripPix. Users are presented with a list of activities, such as ‘sight-seeing,’ to choose from. After...

Panasonic 4K Photo reaches to grab stills-from-video dream

Panasonic 4K Photo reaches to grab stills-from-video dream The arrival of 4K video means that an increasing number of devices are effectively capturing prolonged bursts of 8MP images at fast frame rates, increasing the likelihood of capturing ‘the moment.’ Using a video feed to capture stills isn’t a new idea – Nikon’s first electronic camera, the QV-1000C, did it in the late 1980s – but the resolution of 4K makes it more useful. Panasonic has recognized this way of working and has introduced 4K Photo mode to its 4K cameras, to make things easier for the user. Panasonics such as the GH4, LX100...
