Late last week saw the introduction of Cascable to the Apple App store, an iOS app for remote controlling Wi-Fi-enabled cameras. Cascable allows Apple device users an alternative way to access and control their W-iFi enabled camera via an iPhone or iPad, and extends shutter control to the Apple Watch. Here’s a quick look at how I created some homemade “petzval swirl” bokeh that mimics photos taken with the new Petzval 58 Bokeh Control Art lens. Basically, on my 50mm 1.8 prime lens (yes, changing the focal length will mess this up!) I cut a small hole in light-proof paper over my lens hood, and taped it together, to produce some cheapo Petzval bokeh that swirls the background at wide apertures. Vignetting is a problem, however. While cool and (presumably) functional, neither the VidPro nor the Monoprice even remotely fit in a pocket. Both have very simple designs, and I seriously doubt the manufacturing requires sophisticated parts design and molding like Edelkrone. Both designs are cookie cutter designs using skateboard wheels. No one makes a cosplay to wear it in front of the mirror and then put it in the wardrobe again. To me the “fail” in it is the fact that you need to “assemble” it (attach it to the phone, unlock the phone, launch the app etc..) if you want a viewfinder and control over shooting parameters. Sony’s QX100 at least is untethered or attached in a less precarious fashion. Also the ONE has a similar FOV as the iPhone’s built in camera lens.And for a phone the camera is quite decent with all downsides of a small sensor, but it’s not a shoddy performer. I am a photographer that is actually a portraitist, and I print some of my pictures in big (if not huge) sizes, so resolution matter in this case. Not noise, if stochastic, I could live with that, the same way I accepted noise in film, if it doesn’t look like a digital artefact. This seems like Canon’s answer to the Nikon D5500. With only 1080p30 video and no IBIS, I’ll stick with my Sony A65. The Nikon looks like a better deal to me, since it’s $100 less and offers almost everything this Canon has, plus a bunch of functionality that Canons don’t have. those pictures are really interesting. I can say, the artistic and creative way of shooting is something only the photographer can find in his head by planning ahead where and how to shoot, but the technical aspect (lenses and camera) is a very important factor. Here’s a quick look at how I created some homemade “petzval swirl” bokeh that mimics photos taken with the new Petzval 58 Bokeh Control Art lens. Basically, on my 50mm 1.8 prime lens (yes, changing the focal length will mess this up!) I cut a small hole in light-proof paper over my lens hood, and taped it together, to produce some cheapo Petzval bokeh that swirls the background at wide apertures. Vignetting is a problem, however. I’m going to start with a small admission… I’ve always been about brand-name stuff. There, I said it… I have had Canon cameras since the a5 (it was the small, boxy predecessor of the Ixus range) and before that, Nikon film cameras (and during, come to think of it) and have always had the mindset that I should purchase Canon lenses for my Canon cameras, always thought that I should buy well known lights and tripods and… (the list, it goes on and on) More recently though, I’ve had less disposable cash (kids! yay) and when you add that to getting increasingly more creative through experience...

The fact that Leica built a factory in 2014 doesn’t tell us anything about its revenue, its operating expenses, or how it paid for the new factory. Was it financed, was it paid for with cash? If so, how does that impact Leica’s asset strength? My point is that you came here throwing around financial “facts” with no insight to them. I am in no way stating that Leica isn’t operating at a small margin, but neither of us has any facts to support that assertion. Also, it really needs to be said that Leica is absolutely puny in size compared to a giant like Sony....

Triggertrap has updated its Triggertrap Mobile app to make it compatible with the new Apple Watch and Pebble range of smartwatches. The new version of the app now allows DSLR users to trip their camera’s shutter using one of these smartwatches via the wireless connection between the watch and an iPhone or Android smartphone. A very nice job, this video, introducing a place, a camera, and a DPReview personality a little better, besides Josh himself. Would think it underlines photographic depth of accomplishments of Canon in the g7x, not least the advantages in the longer focal length abilities of its lens. Yorkshire topic. Shutterfly has introduced TripPix, a new app that turns photos snapped with an iPhone into physical albums. The app assembles 15 to 30 photos from a trip into a single album, which can be styled to reflect the kind of adventure they depict. Those who use the service can add things like maps with pins and icons to the album, and choose from different covers. TripPix is only available for iOS. The arrival of 4K video means that an increasing number of devices are effectively capturing prolonged bursts of 8MP images at fast frame rates, increasing the likelihood of capturing ‘the moment.’ Using a video feed to capture stills isn’t a new idea – Nikon’s first electronic camera, the QV-1000C, did it in the late 1980s – but the resolution of 4K makes it more useful.
