Watkins Helped Save Yosemite Did you know that a single unknown photographer helped change the course of history for Yosemite with his photos back in 1861? The video above tells the story of Carleton Watkins, a man whose photos of Yosemite made their way to President Abraham Lincoln and helped influence the decision to turn the area into a National Park. The video is narrated by Matthew Butson, the Vice President of the Getty Images Archive, who takes us deep into the company’s vaults to give us a glimpse at some of Watkins’ original prints. These Food Photos Show Junk Food Arranged to Look Like Fine Dining

These Food Photos Show Junk Food Arranged to Look Like Fine Dining One of the hottest food photographers on Instagram in the past couple of months is an anonymous user who goes by the name Chef Jacques LaMerde. It’s not the quality of the photos that’s attracting attention, but rather the subject matter. Each of the shots shows cheap junk food arranged to look like the artistic plates found at high-end restaurants. With just 24 photos posted over 2 months, the account has already attracted a significant amount of media coverage and over 46,000 followers. Here’s a sampling of some of his photos (along with the ingredients found in the captions): Hand...

Nikon Warns of More Fake DSLRs: D610 and D4S Now on Watch List

Nikon Warns of More Fake DSLRs: D610 and D4S Now on Watch List At the end of 2014, Nikon issued a notice saying that fake D800E DSLRs have been discovered during service center repairs. Technicians found that the cameras were actually ordinary D800 DSLRs (a few hundred dollars cheaper) that had their covers replaced with D800E shells. Nikon issued an update today saying that other models are being faked as well, namely the D610 and D4S. The company says that service centers have discovered $1,000 D7100 crop sensor cameras that were modified to look like $1,500 full frame D610 DSLRs. Magic Lantern Pulled ‘Unfunny’ April Fool’s Prank that Put Blue Screen of Death on DSLRs Magic Lantern is being slammed online after pulling an “unfunny” April Fool’s Day prank that gave DSLR owners a fake “Blue Screen of Death.” The message on the screen contained phoney technical details and informed users that their camera was “bricked.” Developer Vladimir Ivanov wrote about his experience with the prank in a lengthy blog post. After diving into the code, he discovered that a Magic Lantern developer had added a “joke mode” to the firmware that randomly displays the error message to users on April 1st. “What?! Joke mode? Seriously?” he writes. Ivanov calls Alex “the...

Review of the Mindshift Gear Rotation180° Professional Backpack

Review of the Mindshift Gear Rotation180° Professional Backpack I thought the whole Rotation180 thing was a gimmick, and avoided the packs by Mindshift Gear because who needs a new gimmick, right? I wanted a useful pack and had it in the f-stop Gear Satori EXP that joined me trekking in Nepal more than once. That pack is amazing and fits all kinds of stuff for my longer trips in the backcountry. The best way I can describe the Mindshift rotation180° Professional pack is that it’s more amazinger. The Satori EXP is an amazing pack and can take a beating, but I found the rotation180° Pro better suited to my style and shooting needs. But, it’s not for...

We turned it on our studio test scene – see how it performs against other cameras in its class.  See the Pentax K-S2 in our studio test scene comparison...

Shooting a Skyline Portrait of NBA Star James ‘The Beard’ Harden

Shooting a Skyline Portrait of NBA Star James ‘The Beard’ Harden I’ve dreamed about shooting Houston Rockets guard James Harden for a long time. How can you go wrong with that beard? He’s just awesome looking. I wanted to pose him with ZZ Top for the last couple of years — or at least with Billy Gibbons — but alas, no one has bitten on that idea yet. (You hear that Texas Monthly? It would be a great cover. Trust me.) Anyway, the call finally came some weeks ago from Sports Illustrated. Harden had a super tight schedule with the All-Star Break coming up, and the editor asked if we could put together something with the iconic Houston skyline with...

Shooting Better Waterfalls: Five Tips for Improving Your Waterfall Photography

Shooting Better Waterfalls: Five Tips for Improving Your Waterfall Photography Perhaps there isn’t a more sought after and photographed subject than water. More specifically, waterfalls. When you really think about it, waterfalls are one of the most basic and simple things that we can find in nature. They are just streams or rivers that happened, by one geological occurrence or another, to find themselves flowing over some height of cliff or stone or other drop-off. Still, we remain captivated by the simple beauty and serenity that can come from being near, and photographing a waterfall. That’s where we, as photographers, often slam face first into a huge creative and...

Red introduces ‘Weapon’ camera with 8K sensor option

Red knows their market better than me, but as far as I’m concerned, I can’t see Hollywood ready for 35mp footage. Not even Hollywood can handle it. It’s just too extra costly for IQ gains that exactly who cares? 35mp moving images, even for the masters at Hollywood, is not a walk in the park. You get more expensive CG, make up, special make up, props, sets, wardrobe, deadlines, etc. Blockbusters’ budget are average at 100 – 200 million, at 2k. For 35mp footage, you can bet it will increase another 100 million for extra technical requirements. PS: if you wonder...

Jet Set: The travel photography and photojournalism of Mark Edward Harris

You’re sidestepping the issue. The entire “North Korea” rant… Non sequitur, I’m not going further there. The issue isn’t what I think, and it’s certainly not your grandiose self-entitled “free world” nonsense. The issue is what those three ladies thought. I don’t care whether that matters to you or not. Your rights end where the rights of another begin. Wearing a beret and being an “artiste” won’t change that. Neither will strawman arguments about totalitarian regimes and illogical rants about small freedoms...

HTC One M9 Users Get a Boost In Camera Quality via Software Update

HTC One M9 Users Get a Boost In Camera Quality via Software Update HTC has rolled out a new software update for its One M9 smartphone that gives a boost to its camera quality, something that reviewers have been griping about since the phone was launched. By downloading the latest update for their phone, users will find a noticeable improvement in the photos they snap. The improvement comes in an 88.6 megabyte download for update 1.32.531.33. While HTC hasn’t said too much about exactly what they changed in the way photographs are captured and processed, tests are showing that things have changed for the better. Android news site Phandroid did some...

Double Exposure Portraits of City Council Members and Things Important to Them

Double Exposure Portraits of City Council Members and Things Important to Them Photojournalist Kyle Grantham of The News Journal in Delaware recently shot a creative series of portraits of the city council members of Wilmington, Delaware. Each of the images is a double exposure photo showing the member blended with a subject of their choice. The double exposure photographs were all created in camera. Grantham first shot studio portraits of the subjects and then asked them to pick something in their districts that meant something to them or the people they represented. Grantham then re-exposed the original portraits with a photo of the things the council members...

Recreating the Look of Tintype Photography Using Photoshop

Recreating the Look of Tintype Photography Using Photoshop The other night I came across the work of photographer Victoria Will, who made real tintype portraits of some actors who attended this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The portraits themselves were excellent but what really drew me in was the effect of the tintype medium and the old lens and camera that was used to make the images; very narrow depth of field, low tonal range, and non-uniform exposure across the frame. I decided I wanted to see if I could replicate the look of tintype using my Sony A7R and some Photoshop massaging. First, using one of Ms. Will’s images as a baseline, I...

5 Ways to Use a Beauty Dish Light for Portraits

5 Ways to Use a Beauty Dish Light for Portraits The beauty dish. It’s one of my favorite light modifiers, which is why I’m so excited to share some techniques you can try with your beauty dish. Don’t have one? Not to worry. There are plenty of DIY beauty dish project plans online. I’ve actually made them out of aluminum turkey pans. When you decide to step up to a more professional beauty dish, however, they are usually not as expensive as most light modifiers and you can get them for speedlights or studio strobes. Beauty dishes are a niche modifier usually reserved for beauty shots. These tend to be head and shoulder portraits that...

3 Valid Reasons it Might be Time to Upgrade Your Camera Equipment By Ludovic Hirlimann For all of you camera enthusiasts, lens aficionados and gear fetishists, hearts race and palms sweat when broaching the subject of camera equipment upgrades. Camera companies keep a constant flow of equipment releases coming to quench the insatiable appetite of those who are convinced they need the latest and greatest. It’s important to keep in mind that just because the new iteration of your camera body or a new lens with an even longer list of acronyms outlining its features is released, it doesn’t instantly make your equipment obsolete. All you savvy consumers should...

NY Courts: Fine Art Photographers Can Take Pictures of People Inside Their Homes… For Now

NY Courts: Fine Art Photographers Can Take Pictures of People Inside Their Homes… For Now NYC-based photographer Arne Svenson, whom we interviewed last month, has won a lengthy legal battle against people who claimed that he had invaded their privacy by taking pictures of them in their homes through open windows. The fine art photographer attracted a considerable amount of attention and controversy a couple of years ago with his project The Neighbors, which contained photos of Svenson’s neighbors, captured without their knowing through their apartment windows using a telephoto lens. Svenson was sued by two of the neighbors, Martha and Matthew Foster, back in 2013 after the...

It’s the art of documenting a crime scene clearly and honestly to provide a jury...

‘Picture of Innocence’ Episode of Midsomer Murders is a Battle of Film Versus Digital

‘Picture of Innocence’ Episode of Midsomer Murders is a Battle of Film Versus Digital The video above is an episode of the British television detective drama Midsomer Murders titled “Picture of Innocence.” It originally aired back in June of 2007 and tells the story of a rivalry between a “traditional” (AKA film) photographer and a digital one leading up to a village’s annual photo exhibition. Here’s the episode’s synopsis: In the build-up to Luxton Deeping’s annual photographic exhibition, a battle rages between the traditional and digital photographers of the pretty village. The dispute seems harmless enough – until Lionel Bell is found murdered in a nearby woodland,...

Weekly Photography Challenge – Monochrome

Weekly Photography Challenge – Monochrome Have a look at these 25 monochrome images. Get some ideas of color you can use because that is your challenge for this week. Weekly Photography Challenge – Monochrome By André Mellagi By Darlene Hildebrandt Shooting in monochrome is an option on most cameras. If you also shoot in raw format you can still recover the color information in post-processing if you wish, but it will help you learn to see things in their simplest form – light and shape. Here are a few more examples (even stuck a few of my own images in there): By Darlene Hildebrandt By Darlene Hildebrandt By Nana B Agyei By...

Fotodiox pays ‘homage’ to Hasselblad Stellar with wooden grip for Sony RX100 series

AND Hasselblad was making their own SONY RX 100 II, the Stellar, with a grip, made of wood or other materials. $2,395 ….. Sony’s camera sells for $650 so the Hasselblad grip and H logo name added $1750 to the price. **Apparently, it has been discontinued** …. lack of sales perhaps? Sounded like a bargain: The Hasselblad Stellar (RX100 II) features a titanium finish rather than a black one, a big “H” logo on the front, and a deep, contoured handgrip that’s missing from Sony’s version of the camera. The grip is available in your choice of carbon fiber...

Photographer Builds a Set on a Brooklyn Sidewalk For a Stranger’s Proposal

Photographer Builds a Set on a Brooklyn Sidewalk For a Stranger’s Proposal Back in December 2014, we shared about photographer Justin Bettman‘s Set in the Street project that involved building elaborate “indoor” sets on outdoor sidewalks in New York City, shooting portraits on them, and then leaving them for the public to pose with. This past Valentine’s Day, Bettman’s ongoing project took a different (and romantic) turn: he built a set for a stranger to propose to his girlfriend in. Here’s what happened: after his project was widely published, Bettman received an email a few months ago from a man named Jose Luis who saw #setinthestreet in New York Magazine....

This is What the History of Camera Sales Looks Like with Smartphones Included

This is What the History of Camera Sales Looks Like with Smartphones Included A few months ago, we shared a chart showing how sales the camera market have changed between 1947 and 2014. The data shows that after a large spike in the late 2000s, the sales of dedicated cameras have been shrinking by double digit figures each of the following years. Mix in data for smartphone sales, and the chart can shed some more light on the state of the industry. Here’s the original chart in case you missed it the first time around: Photographer Sven Skafisk decided to see what the same chart would look like with smartphone sales factored in. Here’s the chart he came up with...

Doggy Photo Booth Helps Shelter Get Dogs Adopted

Doggy Photo Booth Helps Shelter Get Dogs Adopted Photographer Guinnevere Shuster of the Humane Society of Utah came up with a fantastic idea for helping dogs get adopted: the doggy photo booth. Her photos of the dogs do a much better job at capturing their personalities than standard snapshots, and the results have been impressive: 93.26% of the dogs are now finding new homes. The photo booth-style portraits are able to show multiple facets of a dog’s personality through four pictures of each puppy. Here are some of the portraits that have been shared so far: “We just wanted to help bring attention to some of our harder-to-adopt...

Photographing Stars Using a Kit Lens

Photographing Stars Using a Kit Lens Looking at a starry sky while sitting in the open is always a soothing experience, but shooting those stars is a much better one. Have you seen those amazing starry skies and Milky Way photographs from professional photographers and wondered how to do this yourself but never tried it because you thought you did not have the proper equipment? Let me tell you, “You were wrong”. If you own a normal DSLR camera and are interested in shooting stars (and the Milky Way), you can do this with your kit lens. I will explain the whole process step by step in the easiest possible way, so that even if...

3 Tips for Getting Great Skin Tones Using Adobe Camera Raw

3 Tips for Getting Great Skin Tones Using Adobe Camera Raw Skin tones can be one of the more difficult aspects of a photograph to master. Getting pleasing skin tones will make your image appear more eye-catching and attractive. If you know the right steps to take, skin can be pretty simple to master. Using these three simple tricks, using only Adobe Camera Raw (ACR), your skin tones will appear more balanced and pleasing to the eye. Note: working in Lightroom you can do the this as well, because the sliders and options are the same! White Balance When trying to get great looking skin tones, the first thing you should pay attention to is the white...

Fotodiox pays ‘homage’ to Hasselblad Stellar with wooden grip for Sony RX100 series

Fotodiox pays ‘homage’ to Hasselblad Stellar with wooden grip for Sony RX100 series Accessories brand Fotodiox has introduced a cherry wood hand grip for the Sony Cyber-shot RX100 III that it says is ‘inspired’ by the Hasselblad Stellar special edition cameras that were first launched in 2013. While Hasselblad allowed a choice of seven different handgrip materials for the original Stellar model, Fotodiox is offering only one – cherry wood. However, at $59.95 it makes a somewhat more affordable solution, even when you add the price of the camera, than the $1650 Hasselblad wanted for last year’s Stellar II. The original Stellar was a...

In a class of its own: Samsung NX1 review

28 MP, BSI sensor technology, 15 fps, tilt screen, 4K video . . . nice! This is very promising. I will keep an eye on Samsung, because frankly, I don’t like the direction Sony has been heading, leaving out GPS (which this camera should have but doesn’t) and refusing to put USB 3 in their cameras. They (Sony) is acting more and more like Canon and Nikon, holding back on technology, and that p!sses me off to no end. It’s been years since they introduced the A77, and what do they give us with the A77 II? A camera that’s hardly any better. That’s PATHETIC! Samsung...

Samsung NX1 Review: Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder

Samsung NX1 Review: Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder The other day I was speaking with a friend and he was lamenting about having to deal with 2 minutes of aimless introduction at the start every review. “There’s always something” he said. He now skips the beginning just to get the beans of the review and the conclusive notes. By definition a conclusion must come at the end, but photography is about breaking the rules isn’t it? So today that is what I’m doing. I’ll start with the conclusion at the top and if you care enough after reading the TL:DR, you can keep going. Odds are that if you’re here you already know how many megapixels and...

The Social Engineering of Photography: Overcoming the Challenge of Talking to People

The Social Engineering of Photography: Overcoming the Challenge of Talking to People I’m always on the lookout for potential subjects. Approaching them is something that I’ve actually gotten better at, despite the video evidence below to the contrary. When I was in college working for Student Media I hated talking to people to get caption information after I photographed them. Approaching a person before the photograph was even harder. As I became more confident in my ability it became easier, but it was still difficult for me. When I decided I wanted to be a full time photographer, I knew I needed to do my best to remove the apprehension of talking to people I didn’t...

Tintype Portraits of Celebrities at the Sundance Film Festival

Tintype Portraits of Celebrities at the Sundance Film Festival Photographer Victoria Will captured portraits of celebrities at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Photographer Victoria Will with the Graflex Super D she used for her celebrity portraits. The photographs took a lot of work to make, but the effort paid off in the end: Will has received many accolades for the tintypes that resulted. “What I love about the process is how raw it is,” Will tells Profoto. “We live in an age of glossy...

Using Filters in Underwater Photography

Using Filters in Underwater Photography   By Peter Rowlands   Filters are not new to underwater photography, but they have come of age with the digital revolution. On land, the opposite has been true. There, as the capabilities of digital cameras and software have grown, so filter use has become less popular. Underwater, the situation is different because we’re using much stronger filters than on land because we have to deal with much bigger color shifts. Furthermore, filter photography underwater benefits hugely from the adjustable white balance of digital.  ...

A Guide to Photographing Dance Performances in a Theatre

A Guide to Photographing Dance Performances in a Theatre One of the biggest challenges as photographer is shooting inside a theatre, simply because the only thing that you can control is the camera. You may be faced with very dim lighting conditions, dancers moving around at great speed, different lighting settings during the show, no use of flash, and your movement in the theatre during the show may be limited. I am writing this guide based on an assignment you have with the organizer, as photographer of the event. Some of the points might not be relevant or accessible for you if you are attending a performance as a member of the public....

6 of the Most Essential but Underused Camera Features

6 of the Most Essential but Underused Camera Features If you are just getting started in photography, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find these six often overlooked features in the menu of your DSLR. While each one can be used to create professional quality results, extensive experience is not required to leverage their usefulness. Best of all, there’s no need to upgrade to a high end model. These settings are now found on even the most entry-level camera bodies. With the ability to take full control of your camera, you’re more likely to get the shot right at the time of the exposure. 1) Flash Exposure Compensation The pop-up flash gets a...

Opinion: Why the Canon XC10 is a big deal

Opinion: Why the Canon XC10 is a big deal Today Canon released the XC10, a camera that for all practical purposes is equal part a stills and a video camera. It promises to deliver not only both types of media, but an appropriate user experience for either type of shooting. It may be the first true ‘convergence’ camera. Convergence. You’ve no doubt heard about it before. Still photography and video are on a collision course. In the future, goes the thinking, a camera will simply be a camera. Whether it shoots video or stills will be irrelevant because, of course, all cameras will simply shoot both....

The Real Meanings of Common Photographic Words and Expressions: Part II

The Real Meanings of Common Photographic Words and Expressions: Part II Well now, it seems my little guide to common photographic expressions hit a chord with a few people. It’s great that people appreciated it and I received some awesome comments. So I decided to put my thinking cap back on and come up with some more definitions. As before, it’s just a bit of fun and I’m in the firing line, just as much as the next guy.Urbex: Short for “urban exploration”, this increasingly popular style of photography requires practitioners to illegally trespass on someone’s (usually heavily vandalised) property so that they can photograph themselves wearing a WW2 era...

A Hands-On Review of the Canon 5DS by Peter Hurley for Portraiture

There are only a couple of Canon 5DS cameras floating around in the US for reviewers to play around with prior to the DSLR arriving on store shelves in June. Portrait photographer Peter Hurley managed to get his hands on one of them. In the video above by Resource Magazine, Hurley uses the camera for two headshot shoots and shares his first impressions of the camera’s capabilities. “Medium format has a ‘look’ to it, and I think the pros who like using medium format cameras are probably going to stick around with the medium format thing,” Hurley says. “But this immediately gets all the...

Photos of Presidents Throwing the Ceremonial First Pitch Through the Ages

Photos of Presidents Throwing the Ceremonial First Pitch Through the Ages The first ceremonial first pitch ever thrown was tossed by former Japanese Prime Minister Ōkuma Shigenobu at a baseball game in Koshien, Japan, back in 1908. Two years later, US President William Howard Taft started the tradition in the United States, tossing a pitch (shown above) in Washington DC on the opening day of the Washington Senators’ season. Since then, every US president has thrown at least one ceremonial first pitch, and they have all been documented in photographs. Here’s a look at some historical photos of US presidents throwing their ceremonial pitches. Woodrow Wilson...

3 Tips for Capturing Connections in Family Portraits

3 Tips for Capturing Connections in Family Portraits   We’ve all heard the dreaded words, “Okay everyone, look at the camera and at the count of three say Cheese!”. I have been guilty of using this technique too in my early days of as a family portrait photographer. I remember coming home from client photo shoots and kicking myself for not being original, botching up my client’s experience, and getting really mediocre images that lacked any emotion or connection. Over the course of time, my style of photography evolved and I started investing more time and effort in making my clients feel comfortable before, during, and after their photoshoot....

How to Create Your Own Lightroom Presets

How to Create Your Own Lightroom Presets A straight out of the camera Raw file from an EOS 5D Mark II, without any corrections applied in Lightroom. This is the sort of thing you see when you import images into Lightroom without applying a Develop Preset at the import stage. There are mundane tasks in Lightroom that you carry out on almost every photo you import. You can save time by creating Develop Presets to perform these jobs automatically upon import, so that you don’t have to do them later. The same photo with Profile set to Landscape, lens corrections applied, chromatic aberrations removed and white balance set to auto. This...

It’s now a rounder device, and its base is fitted with 7 new photo-detectors to read the colors being displayed on the monitor. When using a tripod to improve some types of photography, one of the most important parts is the head that connects the camera to the legs. Along with providing flexibility for positioning and controlling the camera and lens, the head is where much of the ease, or difficulty, of using a tripod comes from. Continuing where our previous ball head roundup left off, we’ve collected six ball-type heads for review that are...

Live Portrait Wants to Bring Boring School Pictures to Life with Augmented Reality

Live Portrait Wants to Bring Boring School Pictures to Life with Augmented Reality Live Portrait is a new service that’s trying to breathe new life into the standard school portrait. Instead of simply static photographs, the company’s idea is to use augmented reality through a smartphone camera to add a video element to every photograph in a yearbook. The service claims to be “the first and only service that uses video to enhance the value of print.” We’re not so sure that’s an accurate claim, as HP began offering a similar service for consumers back in 2013 called Live Photo. Live Portrait does appear to be geared toward commercial photographers, though. Here’s how...

LG Website Refers to an 8K Apple iMac That Doesn’t Officially Exist Yet Apple made quite a splash last year when it announced its new iMac with a 5K display, but something much bigger could be on the horizon. A page on the LG website briefly referred to an ‘iMac 8K’ announcement by Apple — one that hasn’t happened yet. The message was first spotted by 9to5Mac on in the LG newsroom website in an explanation of 8K displays (the page is no longer online). Here’s the text version of what it said with the significant sentence bolded: It has become clear that Japan is planning to launch an 8K SHV test broadcast and then promptly restructure the UHD service....

Syrian Refugee Children Capturing and Sharing Their Lives with Disposable Cameras

Syrian Refugee Children Capturing and Sharing Their Lives with Disposable Cameras The Syrian civil war has been raging for over four years now, and millions of Syrians have fled their homes and into neighboring countries as refugees. As refugees struggle with basic necessities and figuring out their futures, a new project has popped up to give refugee children a creative outlet and a voice through photography. Hundreds of children have been documenting their tumultuous childhood experience using disposable cameras. It’s all part of a one year project known as “Lahza2″ (“Glimpse” in Arabic) by Zakira (“Memory” in Arabic), a photo-centric NGO. The organization...

The card takes a moment to read because it has so much storage space.
