Ring Flash Underwater Photography

Ring Flash Underwater Photography   By Joaquin Gutierrez Fernandez   One of the trickiest aspects of taking macro and super-macro images is providing even lighting to a tiny subject when it’s just inches away. Even relatively small strobes can be a tight fit when focusing on tiny critters. A ring flash, on the other hand, attached to the front of the lens, provides even lighting without having to maneuver your strobes.   What Is a Ring Flash?   The ring flash has its humble beginnings not in any form of...

10 Things I Discovered at the WPPI 2015 Trade Show

10 Things I Discovered at the WPPI 2015 Trade Show A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt Wedding and Portrait Photographers International (WPPI) holds an annual conference and trade show. It’s a massive photography convention with over 10,000 attendees converging on Las Vegas, Nevada each year. I’ve personally attended it over 12 times – both as photographer and trade representative. This year I decided to go just to see some old friends I haven’t seen in way too long, meet some others I’ve only ever seen online, and to make some new contacts. In this article I’ll share with you my top 10 things I discovered at the trade show this year at WPPI...

Photographing Special Events Like the Birth of a Baby

Photographing Special Events Like the Birth of a Baby A Post By: Melinda Smith Sometime in your life as a photographer, you might be lucky enough to get the chance to photograph an event that is so special, so sacred, so personal, that all you can do is be grateful that you have been invited to be part of that unforgettable moment. My photos and words will focus on photographing the birth of a brand new baby, but there are many other events, some happy, some sad, that you might be asked to photograph, and these suggestions may help you with those times too. Be Respectful Above all else, be respectful. This moment isn’t about you. It isn’t about...

Novo to produce filter range using sapphire crystal and Gorilla Glass

Novo to produce filter range using sapphire crystal and Gorilla Glass A new filter manufacturer called Novo is promising a range of filters that will be made from super-durable sapphire crystal and Gorilla Glass, which should have enhanced scratch resistance. The company also claims its filters will have extremely thin brass frames, and will feature ‘superior coatings’. With the initial launch Novo will use sapphire crystal for its UV filter in the Sapphire range, while the Endura range, which will be protectors and UV filters, will use Gorilla Glass. A further variable ND and a circular polarizer in the Endura range will be...

Aloha! We go shooting with Samsung’s new NX500 [UPDATED]

I owned Samsung’s first mirrorless the NX10 along with the much gloated 30mm f2, mostly because it offered exceptional value at clearance prices. But at the same time it just didn’t. The 30mm was ok, but nothing spectacular (yes it’s a bit smaller than say your average crop 35mm f1.8, but not significantly so). The body was pretty ‘meh’. It in no way was better or even particularly smaller than an a55 and 35mm f1.8, but the sensor was actually pretty horrid… no REALLY horrid. Since getting rid of it and a few other Samsung lenses I somehow managed to...

Cockroaches Have Eyes Capable of Long Exposures for Seeing in the Dark

Cockroaches Have Eyes Capable of Long Exposures for Seeing in the Dark Did you know that some creatures can actually see the world in long exposures? Scientists recently discovered that cockroaches are the latest insect found to have that feature built into their eyes and brains. It allows the resilient little bugs to see in near-pitch black environments.Scientific American reports that researchers at the University of Oulu in Finland inserted a harmless recording instrument into a roach’s eyeball in order to document electric signals that are generated when the photoreceptor cells detect an incoming photon. They found that cockroach eyes are able to...

An Interview with Photographer Arne Svenson

An Interview with Photographer Arne Svenson Arne Svenson is a well-known fine art photographer who is currently represented by the Julie Saul Gallery in New York. For his last exhibition, Arne experienced quite a controversy recently when he was sued by one of his subjects for his series The Neighbors, after they learned that he photographed them without their knowledge with a telephoto lens from his apartment. The news made worldwide headlines, but Svenson won the case in August 2013 (the subject is currently appealing the ruling). Many viewed the outcome as a victory for creative artistic rights. I spoke with Arne recently...

Fine Art Photography Exhibition Features Portraits of LEGO Figurines

Vesa Lehtimaki, Shelly Corbett, and Boris Vanrillaer are three photographs living in three different places (Helsinki, Seattle, and Stockholm, respectively) who share a common photography interest: fine art photos of LEGO figurines. Their passion for LEGOography, as it’s known, led them to band together to form a collective known as Stick In Plastic. In addition to sharing their work online, they’ve also begun to hold real life fine art photo exhibitions. All three photographers started out by sharing their images through Instagram and other social networks. Their Instagram accounts...

Google’s Latest Doodle Pays Tribute to Photography Pioneer Anna Atkins

Google’s Latest Doodle Pays Tribute to Photography Pioneer Anna Atkins Visitors to Google today are being treated to a Doodle logo replacement that pays tribute to photography pioneer Anna Atkins. Atkins was born 216 years ago today, and in her life she became one of the first — if not the first — women to create a photograph. The Doodle is inspired by the cyanotype photographs (contact prints) of leaves and algae that Atkins started making a year after her friend John Herschel invented the photographic process in 1842. Click the image on Google and you’ll be taken to the search results for “Anna Atkins”: After Atkins started using the cyanotype process...

Seeing is the Essence of Photography, And You Can Learn to Do It Better

Seeing is the Essence of Photography, And You Can Learn to Do It Better Photography is an analytic art form. We aim our lenses to specific parts of the world around us to pick a frame because, in our analysis, that particular frame presents the photograph we wish to take. We can certainly raise the camera, lower the camera, rotate it, pitch it, yaw it, aim at a different part and end up photographing something different. You should realize that there are infinite number of photographs you can take from where you are now. How then do we aim the camera to “that particular frame” to photograph? Seeing is the essence of this process, it is the essence of...

How Do Real Estate Photographers Handle Bad Weather Days?

Using the Adjustment Brush in Adobe Camera Raw

Using the Adjustment Brush in Adobe Camera Raw A Post By: Sarah Hipwell A before and after using the Adjustment Brush on the buildings. What is the Adjustment Brush? The Adjustment Brush is an editing tool in Adobe Camera Raw (known simply as ACR). This tool is possibly the equivalent of the Dodge and Burn tools in Photoshop. So what is dodging and burning? To dodge is to lighten and to burn is to darken a specific area. What does it do? When you make your initial global adjustments of a RAW file in ACR, more than likely, you will need to make local adjustments too. This is where the Adjustment Brush is useful for making adjustments to...

Full Moon Photography Using The Photographer’s Ephemeris 3.0

Full Moon Photography Using The Photographer’s Ephemeris 3.0 A Post By: Peter West Carey The latest release of The Photographer’s Ephemeris (TPE) releases even more tools to help us photographers get the shots we want. There is just too much for one article, so I am going to focus on a personal favorite subject – full moon photos. Before handy apps like TPE, LightTrac and PhotoPills, figuring out where the moon might be on any given night took some educating. Pile on top of that the desire to know when the moon was behind, or next to, a specific feature, natural or man-made, and the calculations were beyond anyone lacking a degree in mathematics. But...

First images from upcoming Samsung S 300mm f/2.8 ED OIS

Oh dear. Nothing for the Samsung fanbois to cheer about in this gallery. Not very sharp at all. My 15 year old EF 300 2.8 IS is just as sharp as this wide open,, and way sharper stopped down. Of course, wide open sharpness isn’t everything to sports and wildlife shooters,,,,, just kidding,, it is. That sensor is really noisy too,, even at ISO200. Nasty. Source Article from...

Lowepro launches weather-proof Fastpack backpacks for traveling photographers

Lowepro launches weather-proof Fastpack backpacks for traveling photographers Bag manufacturer Lowepro has introduced a pair of new backpacks to its Fastpack range, featuring added weather-proofing and a compartment that supports a laptop or tablet. The Fastpack BP 150 AW ll and BP 250 AW ll are basically the same bag in two sizes, and each is divided into three sections that allow storage of camera equipment as well as other everyday items for photographers on the move. The lower front compartment of the BP 150 AW ll unzips to accommodate a mid-range DSLR (the company uses the Nikon D7100 as an example) with a premium f/2.8 standard zoom...

Aloha! We go shooting with Samsung’s new NX500

The NX1 is $1.5k body only. Once you add the obligatory 16-50 f/2-2.8, you’ve already spent $2.7K. Add the 50-150 f/2.8 to complete your lens kit and you’ve burned more than 4,000 dollars… But then again, IMHO it’s totally worth it, and that’s why I went for it, after carefully evaluating all the competitors. The NX500, which would save you $750 on the body-(nice) lens combo but at the cost of serious compromises, however, is not. Frankly, I don’t think the NX500+16-50 f/2-2.8 is worth $2K. Let alone the body + 2-zoom kit for $3.5K. IMHO if you can live...

Shooting a Portrait of a Man with a Cloud of Falling Lemons

Shooting a Portrait of a Man with a Cloud of Falling Lemons Israeli photographer Ronen Goldman was recently commissioned by UK-based premium luggage manufacturer Redland London to shoot a series of advertising photos promoting an upcoming line of luggage. The company wanted to show the durability of the product and how it helps you “be prepared for anything,” so Goldman create a photo of a man protecting himself from a cloud of falling lemons. The video above is a behind-the-scenes glimpse into how the image was created. “I came up with the creative where our protagonist is bombarded with lemons from a tree, and yet is prepared with his...

Hundreds of Photos of New York City Turned Into a Flowing Visual Experience

Hundreds of Photos of New York City Turned Into a Flowing Visual Experience When Israeli freelance artist Ynon Lan visited New York City earlier this year, he wanted to capture the things he saw in a way that conveyed the constant energy he felt as he walked around. He then came up with the idea of taking thousands of still photographs of particular themes and combine them afterward into a video as a flowing visual experience. Lan tells DIYPhotography that he captured roughly 3,600 individual photographs with his Canon 550D for the project and ended up using 330 of them in the minute-long final short film (seen above). A self portrait of Ynon Lan on a New...

Shoot Tank: A Shark Tank Parody with Photography Entrepreneurs

Director David Robin created this humorous spoof of the TV show Shark Tank for the WPPI conference and expo that took place in Las Vegas a couple of weeks ago. It features a number of well known photography industry figures (Roberto Valenzuela, Bambi Cantrell, Jerry Ghionis, Melissa Ghionis, and Gary Fong) as the investors and entrepreneurs. Although they portray a couple of inept inventors in the parody, Melissa and Gary have found success with their actual products in real life. The Ghionis’ are behind the new Omega shoot-through reflector and Fong is well known for his Lightsphere...

Fake Paparazzi Photos of a Fake Celebrity… and Real Star-Struck Tourists

Fake Paparazzi Photos of a Fake Celebrity… and Real Star-Struck Tourists This past Valentines day, photographer Kendrick Brinson was tasked with what she calls “the strangest assignment” of her career thus far. She was asked by OZY magazine with shooting as a fake paparazzi photographer, chasing after editor Sanjena Sathian as she walked the sidewalks of Hollywood Boulevard through crowds of tourists. Sathian later published an account of the experience in a story titled “Almost Famous.” Sathian’s celebrity image was reinforced by an actor that was hired to play her bodyguard and a swarm of hired extras with cameras that were jostling to catch a glimpse of...

A Hands On Comparison of the 50mm f/1.8 Lenses by Canon and Yongnuo

Photographers Tony and Chelsea Northrup shot a hands on test video that pits the new Yongnuo 50mm f/1.8 against the pricier version by Canon. “Yongnuo recently released their first autofocus lens, and it’s half the price of the Canon version,” they write. “We test it to see if we can recommend it for beginning photographers who want an inexpensive, fast lens.” They conclude that even though the Canon 50mm is the better all-around lens, the Yongnuo “makes a good choice for photographers who want to experiment with primes and background blur” and for “filmmakers and everyone using...

What Are Your Favorite Photography SmartPhone Apps?

Review of the CASE Remote Trigger and App

Review of the CASE Remote Trigger and App A Post By: Daniel Korzeniewski The CASE Remote from Cheering Tech is a small box that connects to a DSLR camera via a USB cable and lets you wirelessly control almost every function, and some more. I was offered the device for review from Cheering Tech and decided to try it on without many expectations. When I received the unit I was surprised by the quality of the packaging and presentation. The design of the CASE Remote is really nice, fairly small at two inches square and 70 grams (2.5oz). The size makes the remote convenient, and easy to throw anywhere in the camera bag. The CASE Remote...

Photographers Ignite – 5 Minute Power Sessions to Change Your World

Photographers Ignite – 5 Minute Power Sessions to Change Your World A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt I only just heard about Photographers Ignite, which is a twist on the extremely popular Ignite Sessions. It is produced by Kevin Kubota and I had a chance to sit in on the sessions on the last day of this year’s WPPI (Wedding and Portrait Photographers International) conference. I asked Kevin if I could share some of the videos and he agreed, so while the sessions from this year aren’t online yet I hand picked a few from the archives that I think you’ll enjoy. #1 – There’s gotta be something more . . . This video by Matt and Katie spoke to me on so many levels....

This Time-Lapse Captures the Beauty of 21 Kinds of Flowers Blooming

Photographer Thomas Blanchard just released this time-lapse video that took him 4 months to create. It shows 21 different kinds of flowers blooming, as seen in 9,624 individual RAW photos captured at 5K-equivalent resolution (5184×3456) with a Canon 550D and 24-105mm. “I created this video simply because I love nature,” Blanchard writes. “I always found flower timelapses fabulous, but most of the time they are made with a black background.” He therefore wanted to try a time-lapse project with colorful backgrounds, eventually settling upon vintage wallpapers from the 1960s and 1970s....

Go Pro? Maybe What You Need is to Go Amateur

Go Pro? Maybe What You Need is to Go Amateur Photography is one of the most popular hobbies on the planet, but you’d never know it by reading most photography blogs, podcasts, books, and tutorials. It’s treated as a profession, where the goal is making money, buying more expensive gear or getting your prints into galleries around the world. You’re being enticed to “Go Pro,” and that’s just not realistic for the vast majority of photographers. Most photographers could benefit from going amateur. 100% of humans should practice an art. Probably 0% should try to make money off it. –Austin Kleon At the time of this post, the U.S....

Precious Moments: I’ve Learned To Catch The Smiles of Sleeping Babies

Precious Moments: I’ve Learned To Catch The Smiles of Sleeping Babies When I first started doing newborn photography, I noticed that when I was doing a normal newborn session, the baby would occasionally let out these huge grins that were so infectious and heart melting. Nowadays, I’ve learned to recognize the little signs that a baby is about to let out a smile and I sit there ready with the camera to catch it. I have found that some babies are more smiley than others, and sometimes a little tickle on the lips or nose can bring out the big smile if I think one is lurking. Some people might pass these off as ‘just a bit of wind’ (i.e. trapped air in a...

Post-Processing Trends in Wedding Photography

Post-Processing Trends in Wedding Photography Wedding photography, much like the entire business of weddings, is highly influenced by the ebb and flow of trends. They come, they go, and they’re cyclical. When I plunged into the business in early 2012, I committed myself to research the industry: what works, what’s popular, and what sells? I quickly discovered that there’s a common, predictable, and heavily relied upon set of post-processing trends in wedding photography. Below is a tongue-in-cheek overview of the these trends. While I have my own preferences, I respect that most of the trends below have legitimate points in their...

6 Helpful Functions of the Shift Key When Working in Photoshop I was working on a commissioned artwork in Photoshop today and I noticed something. I keep my left hand over the shift key pretty much the entire time I am working in PS. That little button does a LOT. So I thought I would take some time and show you guys what you have been missing out on if you haven’t taken advantage of shift key functionalities in PS before. #1: Creating Straight Lines This is my favorite shift functionality. Have you ever tried to get a nice clean, straight edge on something in PS and it takes you forever because really… who can draw a straight line without a...

GoPro Hero4 Black – Camera Review

GoPro Hero4 Black – Camera Review A Post By: Gavin Hardcastle The GoPro Hero 4 Black edition is an action cam for recording video but it’s also a very powerful stills camera if you’re interested in getting super wide angle shots on a budget, especially if you want to shoot underwater. If you are into shooting video of the 4K variety, don’t overlook this tiny but powerful little camera. Here’s a short test film I put together to show the 4K chops of the GoPro Hero4 Black. The 4K Image Quality I was so impressed with the clarity of the 4K video captured by the GoPro that I decided to shoot a little film while visiting Thailand...

Walk Through and Review of Autopano Giga – Image Stitching Software A Post By: Barry J Brady A six image photostitch of BC Place in Vancouver My first image editing software was Photoshop Elements 6 and the photostitching function was really erratic to say the least. I was doing real estate and architectural photography and needed a reliable and accurate tool that could quickly and properly stitch images together. I tried a few, but was not happy with all the results. The software was difficult to use and the results were irregular. Then I heard about Autopano. I downloaded a trial and was pretty amazed at how quickly, and more importantly, accurately the...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF7 real world samples gallery posted

Thematic: “Panasonic have been very upfront that their picture quality will lag far behind Sony.” Where has Panasonic said this? Until Sony released full framed mirrorless cameras, in very late 2013, Sony had notoriously bad lenses for their mirrorless system cameras. (Though yes there were better after market lenses by by the likes of Zeiss and Sigma.) Sony mirrorless cameras, including the full framed variety, still have washed out raws. While at lower ISOs, Panasonics have excellent image quality and have access to many very good and some more extraordinary system lenses, plus...

A Primer on Using Photoshop’s Liquify Filter for Realistic Retouching

Here’s a tutorial by New York City-based photographer Jeff Rojas that offers a crash course on how to use the Liquify Filter in Photoshop to make realistic retouches to your images. “The liquify tool has a bad rap in the media for making unrealistic body proportions,” Rojas says, “and that doesn’t have to be the case.” His goal is to show how to best use the tool’s features in order to give your photos more impact while retaining natural body proportions. Photo Sharing is Hurting Our Enjoyment of Life, Study Finds

Photo Sharing is Hurting Our Enjoyment of Life, Study Finds Smartphones and social networks have made snapping and sharing photos extremely easy to do, allowing us to preserve our memories and broadcast our experiences. It’s not all positive, though: there are downsides to our snap- and selfie-happy culture. A new study has found that 58% of people believe that “posting the perfect picture has prevented them from enjoying life’s experiences.”Mashable reports that the study was conducted by New York Times bestselling authors Joseph Grenny and David Maxfield, who surveyed 1,623 people to see how social media affects their lives. 26 Images of Light and Dark that Speak to the Soul A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt In case you hadn’t noticed, this past week we had a theme to a lot of the articles – light! In keeping with that topic here are some images that feature light and dark. You can’t have contrast without both of them, and you can’t have light without dark. It’s sort of a symbiotic relationship. Street Photographs Captured with a Pinhole Camera Strapped to the Face

Street Photographs Captured with a Pinhole Camera Strapped to the Face Some street photographers like to operate stealthily, while others are bold and confrontational. Very few will look as strange as Nicholas Williams to the people they photograph. The Ann Arbor, Michican-based artist visited New York City last year and shot a series of photos using a strange-looking pinhole camera that he strapped to his face with twine. Williams finds it intimidating to raise his camera to his face every time he wanted to photograph someone, so instead he decided to have his camera attached to his face at all times. His camera is crafted out of various household...

My Photos Helped Sell a Home in 8 Days After It Was on the Market for 8 Months

My Photos Helped Sell a Home in 8 Days After It Was on the Market for 8 Months See this house? It languished on the Orlando, Florida, market for 224 days. It’s no wonder; with a photo like that who would want to come see it? A new realtor took over — one who understands the importance of professional photography for his listings. I was hired to photograph the home on February 28 and delivered the images the next day. On March 10 he told me a buyer had made an offer. To put it another way, after almost 8 months on the market, the home was under contract within 8 days after I took new photos. Now I can’t say the photos alone sold the home. Credit must be given to...

Beginner’s Guide to Light Painting

There is No Bad Light for Street Photography

There is No Bad Light for Street Photography A Post By: Valerie Jardin One of the advantages of being a street photographer is that you certainly don’t need to get up before dawn to catch the good light. Harsh sunlight, nighttime and rainy days are only a few of the most desired situations on the streets. Getting up too early, before people are out and about, may actually be counter-productive in your search for the decisive moment. The key is to use light, any light, to your advantage Any time of day or night, be aware of the quality and quantity of light, and look for interesting light sources and subjects. ©Valérie Jardin Nighttime...

Photographer Harassed Online After Using American Flag as Prop for Baby Photo

Photographer Harassed Online After Using American Flag as Prop for Baby Photo Photographer Vanessa Hicks is fighting back today after being chastised and harassed online for using an American flag as a prop during a baby photo shoot. It was a simple Facebook share that has gotten quite a bit of national attention. A few days ago, on March 8th, Hicks — a veteran of the US Navy — shared a photo of an 8-day-old baby named Landon being held up by his father — a member of the US Navy — in an American flag: Hicks says she wanted to honor the flag and incorporate the family’s military background into the portrait. The photographer got a number of positive comments...

10 Beliefs That Suck the Life out of Photographers

10 Beliefs That Suck the Life out of Photographers What if I told you that it’s not the industry, the bad economy, where you live, what camera you shoot with, how many lights you have or how small your Facebook following is that is holding you back. None of those are truly capable of stopping you, they are only challenges for you to meet — the same challenges everyone who creates art or starts a business has to meet and beat. The things that are truly holding you back are your own beliefs. Belief that it IS one of those reasons above. Believing that it is a geography thing that keeps you from excelling, or what gear you use or how...

Photographer Takes Drone Into Hang Son Doong, the Largest Cave in the World

Photographer Takes Drone Into Hang Son Doong, the Largest Cave in the World Hang Son Doong is a cave in Vietnam that’s currently the largest known cave in the world. Inside is a vast green jungle-like world and underground river that looks like something out of the movie Avatar. Photographer Ryan Deboodt recently brought his DSLRs and camera drone into the cave to capture what it’s like from both the ground and the air. The 6-minute video above is the “otherworldly journey” he was able to capture. Many of the shots feature visitors to the cave to show scale — the cave is enormous. The largest chamber in the cave is more than 3.1 miles long, 660 feet high, and...

How Ricoh Returned 90,000 Photos to Victims of the 2011 Tsunami in Japan When Japan was devastated by the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami in 2011, countless families lost precious photos in their homes that washed away. In response, many organizations sprung up to recover, restore, and reunite photos with their owners. One company that launched a huge initiative was Ricoh. In the four years following the disaster, the company’s “Save the Memory” project found and cleaned 418,721 photos, returning 90,128 pictures to the people who lost them. Ricoh is now offering a glimpse of how this monumental effort was conducted for future reference. The company would be...

What Do Real Estate Photographers Use For Bags/Cases?

How to Make the Most of Hard Light with Black and White Photography

How to Make the Most of Hard Light with Black and White Photography A Post By: Andrew S. Gibson The quality of light is an important aspect of successful photography – good photographers spend hours chasing the most suitable light for the type of photography they do. That usually means working at the beginning or the end of the day, when the sun is low in the sky and the light has many beautiful qualities. But what about the middle of the day? Many photographers avoid shooting in direct sunlight in this period, especially in summer, because the light is so hard and strong. You can’t use it for portraits (unless you use flash, which is the subject for another...

Sunshine: My Favorite Light Source

Sunshine: My Favorite Light Source A Post By: Melinda Smith I’m a minimalist gal when it comes to most things, and photography equipment is no exception. I know that some people love equipment and gear; the more the better. But when I think about lugging lights, reflectors, and flashes around, my creativity takes a nosedive. My favorite light source, hands down, is the sun. In the words of John Denver, sunshine on my shoulder makes me happy! I’d love to share some dos (because who likes to be told what NOT to do?) to help you harness the power of the giant lamp in the sky. Hopefully you’ll gain a new appreciation for this...

Tenba announces Switch bags for mirrorless cameras and lenses

Aside from the interchangeable flaps, these aren’t that different from the Tenba DNA series. I own the DNA 8, and its a great bag for my E-PM2 and lenses. What makes a bag ‘mirrorless?’ Really, it’s just the depth. My Olympus Zuiko 14-54 lens, with adapter, might not be much more than DSLR kit lens sized at 4″/10cm, 67mm filter thread, and 500 grams, but it is by far my longest/largest/heaviest lens. When attached to my E-PM2, the entire shebang is about 6-6.5″ deep, depending on whether or not I have the EVF attached. Even that combination is far shorter...

Erez Marom: Why you shouldn’t always believe the forecast

Erez Marom: Why you shouldn’t always believe the forecast Landscape photographers love looking at weather forecasts, and for good reason. The more prepared you are for what’s going to happen, the logic goes, the better equipped you are to deal with cloud conditions, the light direction and intensity, and the more you can plan your shot to make sure you get to the right place at the right time to achieve the image you’ve been planning. You can’t always believe the forecast. With the aurora forecast predicting no activity, I was focused on shooting some star trails at lake Mývatn in Iceland, but against the odds, the...

Director Gets Two Years in Jail for Train Track Shoot That Killed Crew Member

Director Gets Two Years in Jail for Train Track Shoot That Killed Crew Member There have been a number of cases in recent years of people getting struck and killed by trains after doing photo or film shoots on train tracks. One of the cases last year involved the filming of a movie titled “Midnight Rider.” While filming on a narrow trestle bridge, a train passed through and killed one of the crew members. The director, Randall Miller, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and has now been sentenced to two years in prison and eight years of probation for his recklessness. Miller will also be required to pay a $25,000 fine, perform 360 hours of community...

Tip: Sanitary Napkins Can Dry and Dehumidify Your Lenses in Wet Environments

Tip: Sanitary Napkins Can Dry and Dehumidify Your Lenses in Wet Environments I often shoot time-lapse photos in harsh outdoor environments, and over the years I have discovered a number of odd items that are useful for my work. One of them is sanitary napkins (AKA sanitary pads). Apologies if you find the idea unappealing, but I have found that sanitary napkins are much better than conventional silica gel bag products. Traditional desiccants can work very well, but they often need to be dehumidified if you’re constantly in a very wet environment. I use sanitary pads for two purposes. The first is to reduce humidity inside sealed hard cases, since condensation...

Why Complaining About Photos Being Photoshopped Makes No Sense (To Me)

Why Complaining About Photos Being Photoshopped Makes No Sense (To Me) Every day about 200 million photographs get uploaded to Facebook. That’s almost double the number of all the books that have ever been published in human history. And that’s just Facebook, I’m not even mentioning Instagram, Snapchat, or just the photos everybody takes and doesn’t even post online. While taking all those pictures, most people don’t really think about what they’re actually doing, or how the process works. But if they did think about it, I guess their reasoning for that process would be somewhat like this… There’s this thing in front of me, it’s called reality I can use...

The Modernist Houses of Palm Springs Photographed Under a Full Moon

The Modernist Houses of Palm Springs Photographed Under a Full Moon If you do a search for photos of Palm Springs online, the vast majority of the results will show the city basked in the rays of Southern California sunshine. Photographer Tom Blachford wanted to take a different approach. For his project Midnight Modern, Blachford photographed the modernist homes of the resort city under only the light of a full moon. In an essay published at Dezeen, Blachford writes that he wanted to capture a different look of the city that had been the subject of so many photographs already. After capturing some test shots late in the evening after dinner, the idea...

SoundBarrel is a Concept Speaker with an Aperture Inspired by Camera Lenses

SoundBarrel is a Concept Speaker with an Aperture Inspired by Camera Lenses The SoundBarrel is a concept Bluetooth speaker design that shutterbugs should feel right at home with. Created by South Korean industrial designer SaeJoung Kou, the device looks like a wooden camera lens and features a nifty aperture mechanism that’s used to change the volume. Kou says the the “sound aperture” helps you control your “exposure level” to the sound. “[An] iris diaphragm, which is commonly used on cameras to regulate the amount of light admitted to a lens, is applied to the sound hole to control the amount of sound coming out from the resonator,” she writes on the...

Black Water Pelagic Macro Photography

Black Water Pelagic Macro Photography   By Joshua Lambus   I live and dive on the Kona Coast on the Big Island of Hawaii. It’s a rugged island with beautiful vistas above water and incredible life beneath the waves. Because we are located on such a remote island there is no continental shelf, and thus deep and vast canyons are in abundance just offshore. This opens up the ability to do black water pelagic macro dives.   I was intrigued when I first heard about “black water” diving. I had some friends that were doing it occasionally, but I’d just...

How Do You Decide to Contract Out Your Post Processing?

10 Reasons to Ditch Your Softbox for a Light Panel

10 Reasons to Ditch Your Softbox for a Light Panel A Post By: Joel Dryer So you want to create soft, beautiful light? One of the first light modifiers that comes to your mind is probably the tried and tested softbox. But, when it comes to versatility, are softboxes really worth the money? In this article, we are going to look at a viable contender to the age-old softbox – the light panel. Now, the goal of this article is not to bash softboxes, I personally have nothing against them. I own several and use them whenever I feel that they are the right tool for the job. However, my go-to light modifier for the majority of my photography is the...

4 Reasons Shooting at Sunrise and Sunset Will Help You Take Better Photos

4 Reasons Shooting at Sunrise and Sunset Will Help You Take Better Photos A Post By: Jim Hamel   Perhaps the most important change you can make to improve your photography is to change the time of day you are shooting. It is as simple as that. Photos taken in the middle of the day all have problems that can be avoided if you photograph near sunrise or sunset. Photographers agree on very little, but they all seem to agree that the times around sunrise and sunset are the best for photography. In fact, many photographers go so far as to put their cameras away during the hours between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Getting up at dawn, or hanging around after sunset, is generally...

Flat elements developed by Harvard could make camera lenses smaller, lighter and better

Flat elements developed by Harvard could make camera lenses smaller, lighter and better Ordinary refractive lenses (left) suffer from significant chromatic aberrations as different wavelengths are focused in different spots. To compensate for this chromatic dispersion, additional lenses have to be added in an objective to compensate for chromatic aberrations as the number of wavelengths to be corrected increases. An achromatic doublet corrects for 2 wavelengths, an apochromat for 3 and finally a so called super-achromat for four wavelengths. The Harvard team’s new metasurface lenses (right) are designed to focus light in the same spot for 3 different...

Video: A conversation with Olympus’ Richard Pelkowski about the OM-D E-M5 II

A good interview that strikes a satisfactory balance between just trumpeting market spin and overly-guarded responses. I got the impression that Richard Pelkowski may be a genuine enthusiast. It’s interesting how Olympics, (and perhaps Ricoh with the GR), take firmware releases seriously, not just for bug fixes, but also to enable new features. And to seriously listen to owners and reviewers feedback about what should be changed or added. With form-factor changers like the Ricoh Theta, Olympics Air, Ricoh WG-M1, and the Sony Action Cam range, companies are responding to the different...

A Look at How Circular Polarizers Affect the Look of Outdoor Scenes

If you’ve never used a circular polarizer filter before, here’s an interesting video by Mitch Bergsma that shows the effect it has on various outdoor scenes. He mounted a B+W Polarizer filter onto a couple of lenses on his Canon 7D and filmed a number of landscape spots while turning the filter to see its effect as a gradual transition. Pay attention to the sky, leaves, and reflections. (via MicBergsma via Reddit) Source Article from...

NYPD Looking for Two Middle Eastern Guys Spotted Photographing Synagogues

Is this a case of sensible anti-terrorism measures or racial profiling and an inappropriate suspicion of photography? Police in New York are currently looking for two men of Middle Eastern descent who were spotted taking pictures in front of multiple Jewish synagogues in Brooklyn. Here’s surveillance video of one of the incidents: “What are they doing? What else have they been? And what do they have in mind?” city councilman David Greenfield tells CBS New York. Another woman from the community reportedly saw a similar situation of men taking pictures of two other synagogues. “If they...

Understanding Depth of Field: How Focal Distance Affects DOF, Visualized

Understanding Depth of Field: How Focal Distance Affects DOF, Visualized Note: This is part two of a series on depth of field. you can read part one here. This video is seen from a third person point-of-view, perpendicular to that of what the camera user would see. Depth of field is a phenomenon of near and far, forward and backward from the point of focus. Changing our point of view rotates the axis of the depth of the field 90˚ so that we may view it laterally across the X axis. This helps us better understand the optic principles at play. The overlays in this video visually quantify the changing depth of field at the given lens setting. Depending on...

Five Places for Perfect Natural Portrait Lighting

Five Places for Perfect Natural Portrait Lighting A Post By: Bruce Lovelace Wouldn’t it be great if you could get beautiful, natural-looking portraits without ever having to use flash? Well, perhaps you can. There are many different locations, often closer than you think, where you can find the right lighting for great looking portraits. Often they’re missed because we might not know where to look. Generally, your best strategy is to look for what is called Open Shade. Ideally, you are looking for a situation where the stronger overhead light is being blocked by a structure, either man-made or natural. There are a lot of variables to pay...

Flasher smartphone flash launched on Kickstarter The built-in LED-flashes are still one of smartphone cameras’ most glaring weaknesses and we have seen a number of accessory makers addressing the problem with different external light solutions. The latest one comes from Vision global which has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund mass production of its Flasher accessory.  Flasher is a small external photo and video light with 21 LEDs that attaches to your phone or tablet’s headphone socket and weighs only 24 grams. In contrast to the built-in flash, Flasher is always on until you manually switch it off which means...

Mapillary is Building a Crowdsourced Street View with User Submitted Photos

Mapillary is Building a Crowdsourced Street View with User Submitted Photos Google’s well-known Street View service is one of several monumental efforts to document the world’s travel routes through ground-level photos. These projects generally use fancy camera rigs on cars, backpacks, and even camels to capture their images. Mapillary is a startup that’s trying to do things a little differently. Instead of taking the grunt work of photo-taking upon itself, the service is building a crowdsourced Street View competitor using photos submitted by users. Members of the service are asked to shoot and submit photos using their cameras or a special Mapillary app...

9 Reasons You Look Awful in Photos… And How to Fix Them

9 Reasons You Look Awful in Photos… And How to Fix Them Want to improve the way you look in portraits, or improve the portraits that you shoot? Here are 9 common reasons people look awful in portraits and tips on how to fix them. #1: The shooting angle is too low Generally, the lens should be above your eye level for a more flattering photo. Here’s a pretty dramatic example: Either hold the camera little higher (if it’s a selfie), ask the photographer to hold the camera a little higher, find a taller friend to shoot the photo, or bend your knees a little to even the odds. Also, tilt your chin down a little (but not too far) — no one wants...

Cosmos: Abstract Images Created by Destroying Star Photo Film Slides with Bacteria

Cosmos: Abstract Images Created by Destroying Star Photo Film Slides with Bacteria Without context, the images in Cosmos by photographer Marcus DeSieno may look like colorful and abstract images created with some mysterious method. Read the description and captions, and you may experience a sense of revulsion. Each of the photos was created by introducing photographic film to bacteria collected from various places, both unusual and ubiquitous. The microscopic organisms eat away at the film, creating a series of abstract artworks. For example, the image above shows a photo of a star cluster eaten away by bacteria found on an ordinary light switch. DeSieno started out...

These Are Three of the Earliest Photos Ever Made

These Are Three of the Earliest Photos Ever Made Joseph Nicéphore Niépce is a French photography pioneer who is credited with capturing the oldest surviving photograph of a real world scene, a print made back in 1825. In addition to that famous image, titled View from the Window at Le Gras, Niépce also created a number of other photos that are recognized as being some of the earliest photos ever made. Niépce dubbed his early photographic creations “heliographs,” or drawings created with the sun. There are reportedly only 16 of these early Niépce heliographs in the world today, making them exceedingly rare. During Niépce’s career, he...

How The Rescued Film Project Processes C-41 Color Film at Home

Photographer Levi Bettweiser of the Rescued Film Project regularly processes large batches of old films of different styles and eras. Earlier this year he received quite a bit of attention after finding, processing, and sharing 31 rolls of undeveloped film from World War II. Bettweiser recently spent 14 hours processing a batch of C-41 color film at home. The 10-minute video above is a walkthrough on his technique and workflow. With processing labs getting more expensive and disappearing, this could be of interest to you if you’ve ever considered developing C-41 film yourself. (via...

How to Correct Lens Distortion with the Adaptive Wide Angle Filter in Photoshop

How to Correct Lens Distortion with the Adaptive Wide Angle Filter in Photoshop A Post By: Suzi Pratt The issue When photographing subjects with a wide-angle lens, it’s pretty common for perspective problems to present themselves in the form of lines that should be straight, but appear curved and distorted. This is commonly referred to as barrel distortion, which occurs mostly in wide-angle lenses because the magnification of the image decreases the farther the subject is from the optical axis of the lens. In plain speech, it means that when looking through a wide-angle lens, anything that is at the edge of the frame will be prone to appearing curved. Some lenses such...

The Natural Light Cycle for Photographers

The Natural Light Cycle for Photographers A Post By: Jim Hamel Natural light is what landscape photography is made of. Other forms of photography rely heavily on flash, but most landscapes rely entirely on the sun’s rays as their light source. That natural light from the sun is changing every second of the day. A picture taken at 9:00 a.m. will look fundamentally different than picture taken at 7:00 a.m., even if it is a picture of the exact same subject, from the exact same angle, using the exact same camera settings and focal length. Therefore, understanding these changes that occur throughout the day is critical to improving your...

Altitude adjustment: Alpine photographer Jonathan Griffith

I’m not sure about “useful outcomes”, do we really need one more shopping mall, or condo tower in a big city? (Useful to developers and “investors”.) “hedonistic”? Don’t imagine that freezing your butt off at 6000meteres and wondering if your hands will be able to continue gripping the ice axe for the necessary time to get you up or down is hedonistic. A lot of car travel/use is in fact “recreational” and unnecessary. No I guess there’s no recreational mining, but gold is mostly speculative. I just don’t care if some...

Stress Testing SD Cards to See How Their Real Write Speeds Stack Up The popular YouTube tech channel LinusTechTips recently did an SD card showdown to see how the actual performance of the cards compares to what’s written on the labels. One of the things they did was a Canon 6D test, the results of which can be seen in the graphic above (here’s a larger version). They shot 30 RAW photographs with the camera’s 4.5 frame per second burst mode. Using a microphone, they captured the time at which each shutter actuation occurred, plotting the visual representations of the recordings next to one another to great the visualization seen above. LA to Pay $50K to Detained Photographers and Teach Deputies That Photography is Not a Crime Los Angeles has agreed to pay a $50,000 settlement to three photographers after they were detained by LA County Sheriffs while taking pictures in public places. As part of the settlement, the city will also teach its sheriff deputies that photography is not a crime. The three photographers — Shawn Nee, Greggory Moore and Shane Quentin — were represented by the ACLU Foundation of Southern California, who sued the county and deputies in 2011 on behalf of the three men. Authorities had violated the photographers’ First and Fourth Amendment rights, the suit claimed, by searching and...

Crushed Dreams and Moldy Memories: The Messages on Homes After Hurricane Katrina

Crushed Dreams and Moldy Memories: The Messages on Homes After Hurricane Katrina Photographer Craig Boudreaux was personally impacted by the devastation left in the wake of Hurricane Katrina back in 2005. Among the homes that were destroyed by rains, winds, and flooding were his grandmother’s home, his friends’ homes, and even his childhood home. A year after Katrina struck, and after the flood waters had long gone, Boudreaux revisited some ravaged areas in New Orleans, capturing the aftermath of a storm that changed so many lives. The photographs are very personal to Boudreaux and many were very difficult for him to revisit. It has taken him 10 years to cull...

‘The Rain Maker’: How I Shot a Conceptual Wet Plate Collodion Photograph

‘The Rain Maker’: How I Shot a Conceptual Wet Plate Collodion Photograph During past few weeks I have been working on a new picture I had in mind. This time I already knew the title: “The Rain Maker.” It’s a picture made with the collodion photographic process that was invented back in 1851. I discovered a beautiful antique greenhouse that was flooded at that time, so I asked for permission to use it for my idea and the owner agreed. I made some clouds and wanted to see these clouds really pour rain during the shoot, so I had to make a construction of tubes and hoses to make that happen. The first shoot wasn’t a success — the weather conditions weren’t...

Post-processing RAW Files – ACR Compared to Some Free Software Options

Post-processing RAW Files – ACR Compared to Some Free Software Options A Post By: Sarah Hipwell What is RAW? A RAW file is really the digital negative, which means that all the data is stored waiting to be unleashed via a RAW Editor.
