After nearly 30 years of work, the James Webb Space Telescope is about ready for liftoff. The successor to the famous Hubble telescope was originally scheduled to launch on December 22, although that launch has been delayed to no earlier than December 24. When the space telescope launches aboard an Arianespace Ariane 5 rocket from the Guiana Space Center in Kourou, French Guiana, a new era of astronomy will begin. Longtime DPReview reader, Dr. Kevin Hainline, and Smile Mountain have teamed up to make a video about the James Webb Space Telescope, outlining the telescope’s impressive...

Sony Smiconductor Solutions Corporation (Sony) has announced it’s developed ‘the world’s first stacked CMOS image sensor technology with 2-Layer Transistor Pixel.’ This new technology separates the photodiodes from the pixel transistors onto different substrate layers, which nearly doubles the amount of light a single pixel can capture compared to more conventional image sensors. Sony says its proprietary ‘2-Layer Transistor Pixel’ technology splits the photodiodes (which convert photons to electrical signals) and pixel transistors (which control those electrical signals) onto different...

It seems the GH6 will remain in the shadows for at least a few months longer. Panasonic Japan has issued a statement announcing the release of its Lumix GH6 mirrorless camera has been delayed into 2022. When it first announced it had started development of the GH6, back in May 2021, Panasonic’s plan was to release it by the end of the year. Unfortunately, that time line didn’t work out. Camera maker Ethan Moses from Cameradactyl has built a very-large format camera that shoots 20×24″photos that can be developed into positive images right inside the camera’s custom-made film holder for near-instant prints. The result is a kind of ‘instant’ print reminiscent of the type created by the giant Polaroid cameras that were built in the late 1970s. Ethan designs and makes a range of different cameras that he 3D-prints or builds from wood in his workshop in Albuquerque, but this new bellows model is on a whole new scale. Just two weeks after announcing it would no longer take orders for its a7 II series, a6400 and a6100 camera systems, Sony Japan has announced the next casualty of the ongoing chip shortage is its ZV-E10 compact camera system. In an announcement posted to its website, Sony Japan says ‘there is a delay in procurement of parts for digital imaging products due to the global shortage of semiconductors.’ Specifically, the announcement says that as of December 3, 2021, Sony would no longer be accepting orders from dealers and customers for the ZV-E10, a vlogging-oriented camera released just five...

Researchers from Princeton University and the University of Washington have developed a high-resolution color camera roughly the size of a coarse grain of salt. This new sensor technology combines meta surface optics and machine learning models to reconstruct images via the nano-optic imager. Specifically, the research paper detailing the technology says ‘Nano-optic imagers that modulate light at sub-wavelength scales could enable new applications in diverse domains ranging from robotics to medicine. Although metasurface optics offer a path to such ultra-small imagers, existing methods...

[embedded content] A hyperlapse sequence was captured using the DJI Air 2S in Course Lock mode (discussed below).Video by Kara Murphy One of the many valuable features of the DJI Air 2S is its ability to capture 4K hyperlapse videos. For those unfamiliar with the term, a hyperlapse is essentially a time-lapse sequence with the added element of motion – which is achieved by moving the camera slightly between each frame. The Air 2S has some features that make it particularly useful for shooting a hyperlapse: it can capture photos with exposure times up to eight seconds, which is ideal for...

I never want to stop picking up new techniques in photography. If you’re constantly learning, you’re constantly improving. Now that 2021 is coming to a close, I’d like to share some things I learned this year and how they’ve helped my photography grow. Many of the techniques I’m writing about today are things I’ve already talked about at least a bit on Photography Life. When I learn a new and useful tip, I usually post it here as soon as possible! But even if some of them are things I’ve written about before, I hope they still inspire you to think about your own photography this year. Did...

We’ve seen numerous lower-cost anamorphic lenses come to market over the past few years. Sirui has been behind many of these budget-friendly anamorphic lenses, including four focal lengths designed for APS-C and MFT cameras, and more recently a 50mm for full-frame. While Surui’s lineup has been a welcomed addition to the filmmaking world, there are those who’ve complained the 1.33x squeeze of these lower-cost lenses doesn’t offer enough of a dramatic anamorphic effect. Enter Great Joy, with its new 60mm T2.9 1.33x anamorphic lens and 1.35x adapter. The lens is designed for...

The ongoing chip shortage and general supply chain constraints has impacted nearly every camera and lens manufacturer. Now, Canon has published a notice informing consumers that orders for its flagship EOS R3 mirrorless camera could take up to six months to ship. If you’re at all in tune with the film photography world, you know film stocks from various manufacturers are either being discontinued or rapidly getting more expensive. The latest example of this came last month when Kodak announced it was increasing the price of its various film stocks by between 9–15%. As is often the case with sudden price changes, Kodak immediately faced criticism from members of the film photography community, many of whom suggests Kodak isn’t supporting film photographers as much as they believe it should be. Some of the most common advice in photography, especially for landscape and architectural work, is to use a tripod. But the story doesn’t end there. Even if you have a top-of-the-line tripod and head, bad tripod technique can result in some seriously blurry shots. This is especially something you’ll notice when you shoot in windy conditions and use longer lenses. Still, by following the steps below (some of which are obvious, others of which are more obscure) you can get sharp photos no matter the situation. The best thing about the Ricoh GR IIIx is that it’s basically just a GR III with a slightly longer lens. The worst thing about the Ricoh GR IIIx is that it’s basically just a GR III with a slightly longer lens. If you’re familiar with the original GR III, that might be as far into this article as you need to read, to be completely honest. The GR IIIx offers exactly the same ergonomics and pretty much exactly the same performance and image quality as its forebear, but with a 40mm equivalent lens instead of a 28mm. Nikon has released minor firmware updates for nearly its entire Z mount mirrorless camera lineup. The Nikon Z6 and Z7 receive firmware version 3.40 while the Z5 and Z50 receive firmware versions 1.20 and 2.20, respectively. Each of the firmware updates improve autofocus (AF) capabilities across the board, but the updates for the Z5 and Z50 aren’t as substantial as those for the Z6 and Z7. For the Z5 and Z50, Nikon says both Face and Eye Detection autofocus modes have been improved when using a flash unit.
