Fujifilm has announced two zoom lenses which will be bundled with the new X-A2 in one or dual lens kits. The Fujinon XC16-50mm II F3.5-5.6 offers a 24-76mm equivalent range and has a closer minimum focusing distance than its predecessor (30/40cm down to 15/35cm). The XC50-230mm II F4.5-6.7 OIS provides a 76-350mm equivalent range on APS-C and appears to be otherwise identical to the Mark I model. No word on whether these lens will be available separately. Fujifilm has announced the XQ2 premium compact camera which is the same as the XQ1, save for the addition of the Classic Chrome film simulation mode. As with its predecessor, the XQ2 features a 12 megapixel 2/3″ X-Trans CMOS sensor, 25-100mm equiv. F1.9-4.9 lens, 1080/60p video, and built-in Wi-Fi. Fujifilm has announced several new fixed lens compacts including the FinePix S9900W, S9800 and the rugged XP80. The S9900W and S9800 both offer 16MP 1/2.3″ CMOS sensors, 24-1200mm equivalent zoom lenses and 5-axis image stabilization, though only the S9900W offers built-in Wi-Fi. Apple is getting into the smart watch business, but there’s another market that may be in the company’s crosshairs: action cameras. Apple was granted a patent for a wearable camera today, and the news caused GoPro’s stock to tumble by around 12%. The patent was filed back in 2012 and is titled, “Digital camera system having remote control.” The document details an action camera system that can be mounted to things like helmets and masks. Photographer Pascal Kulcsar of Mainz, Germany wanted to add some movements to his time-lapse videos, so he built himself a fancy dolly using LEGO pieces. The tiny vehicle has 6 wheels and is powered by a motor that can run for 8 hours of constant movement with regular AA batteries. Today Flickr released some new charts that offer an inside look at camera trends over the past couple of years. Photographer Vincent Laforet captured some stunning nighttime photographs of New York City while leaning out of an open helicopter door 7,500 feet in the air. At that altitude, Laforet was able to look down at air traffic around NYC’s major airports, and there was no extra pane of glass between the photographer and the city. A few thousand feet higher and oxygen masks would have been required. Last week we reported that an Arizona realtor has become the first in the US to receive Federal Aviation Administration approval for using a drone for real estate images. Yesterday, CNN announced that it has also received a nod of approval from the FAA. Here’s a neat video that shows what you get in a star trails time-lapse if you slowly move your lens’ zoom ring over the course of the long exposures. Thieves are reportedly using the iPod Nano as a spy camera for stealing PIN numbers from people using ATM machines. Here’s a creative (and super meta) idea for a photo project: photographer Sean Hawkey traveled to a silver mine in Peru and shot tintype portraits of the miners there using the silver they mined as his emulsion. Interested in the history of photography and the art of wet plate collodion portraits, Hawkey brought crates of camera gear and tens of pounds of tintype plates to the Sotrami mine in Santa Filomena, Ayachucho, Peru. The shutter on my old Canon 5D Mark II died while on a trip to Fiji earlier this year. The Fujinon XC16-50mm II F3.5-5.6 offers a 24-76mm equivalent range and has a closer minimum focusing distance than its predecessor (30/40cm down to 15/35cm). Photographer Vincent Laforet captured some stunning nighttime photographs of New York City while leaning out of an open helicopter door 7,500 feet in the air. At that altitude, Laforet was able to look down at air traffic around NYC’s major airports, and there was no extra pane of glass between the photographer and the city. At its CES press conference in Las Vegas Asus has announced the ZenFone Zoom, a smartphone with 3x optical zoom lens that is only 12mm thin. The shutter on my old Canon 5D Mark II died while on a trip to Fiji earlier this year. It happened quickly; I was shooting a panorama when horizontal black bars started appearing in some of the shots. After about 10 more photos in between turning the camera off and on again, it was dead. Fujifilm has officially released its XF 16-55mm F2.8 R LM WR lens (say that three times fast), which the company teased on last year’s lens roadmap. The 16-55mm is equivalent to 24-84mm when mounted on an X-series body and offers an internal focusing system and ‘twin linear motor’ which Fujifilm says will allow for fast and silent AF.
