Nikon Z9 launch: What Nikon means by ‘a D3 moment’ (and why it needs one)

Nikon Z9 launch: What Nikon means by ‘a D3 moment’ (and why it needs one) All images by DPReview In our conversations with Nikon representatives, one phrase has come up again and again: ‘A D3 moment’. The company is hoping that the new Z9 will have the same impact on the mirrorless Z-mount lineup as the D3 did for its DSLRs. But what exactly does a ‘D3 moment’ mean? Picture this: Nikon is on the back foot. The company’s traditional dominance of the high-end camera market has been steadily eroded, with the biggest threat coming from a hungry competitor with a reputation for technical innovation and rapid iteration. Nikon – a company...

Film Friday: This pink, hand-painted Leica M4 celebrates Japan’s national flower, the cherry blossom Japan Camera Hunter has revealed its latest one-off repainted Leica cameras in honor of JCH’s 10th anniversary. Photopea 5.2: The free, browser-based image editor now has color space support, noise reduction filter and more

Photopea 5.2: The free, browser-based image editor now has color space support, noise reduction filter and more Photopea, a web-based photo and graphics editor akin to Adobe Photoshop and GIMP, has released its 5.2 update, bringing with it a collection of new and improved features, including color profile support, a CMYK mode, a noise reduction filter and more. While the capabilities of Photopea are sparse compared to the likes of Adobe Photoshop, its ability to run from almost any browser on nearly any desktop device makes it an appealing offer, especially since it’s free to use. This latest update makes it even more enticing thanks to the ability to detect the color space inside a file (PSD, JPG,...

3-way wireless microphone test with Rode, Saramonic and Synco dual-transmitter kits

3-way wireless microphone test with Rode, Saramonic and Synco dual-transmitter kits If you’ve ever tried to record yourself or someone else talking via your in-camera microphones or with a mic in the hotshoe of your camera you will appreciate that neither of those two methods deliver the quality we are used to hearing on a TV show. On a basic level there is one principle reason your distant mutterings don’t resonate with clarity and a full range of tones, and that is that microphones on the camera are just not close enough to where the sound is coming from. The closer you put the microphone to the mouth of the speaker the more likely it is to pick up the intended voice...

Samyang 135mm T2.2 VDSLR gets the MK2 upgrade with new iris and design

Samyang 135mm T2.2 VDSLR gets the MK2 upgrade with new iris and design Lens manufacturer Samyang has given its 135mm cine lens the MK2 treatment, adding weather sealing, a new iris and the design characteristics of the company’s VDSLR MK2 series. The introduction of the Samyang 135mm T2.2 VDSLR manual lens brings the MK2 series to a total six focal lengths spanning 14mm to 135mm. This new upgrade comes with a seal on the rear mount to create a weather-proof barrier between the lens and the camera, as well as a new 9-bladed iris that the company claims produces 18-point sun stars when closed down. The other new feature of this MK2 version is a design that...

Sneak peek: Adobe’s new AI tech animates motion between multiple frames

Sneak peek: Adobe’s new AI tech animates motion between multiple frames At Adobe MAX, Adobe not only unveils what’s new in its applications for users to enjoy today, the company also offers sneak peeks at the technology of tomorrow. One of Adobe’s MAX ‘Sneaks’ leverages Adobe’s Sensei AI technology to animated still photos. It’s called Project In-Between. If you have a camera with a fast frame rate, you likely end up with a large burst of images of the same subject. When you go through your photos, typically only one or two stands out as worth processing and sharing. Adobe wants to put all those ‘reject’ photos to use. Although, with the power of AI, you don’t...

Takeaways from Nikon’s Big Mirrorless Announcements Today

Takeaways from Nikon’s Big Mirrorless Announcements Today As the dust settles on Nikon’s huge spate of announcements this morning – two lenses, a developed lens, a new FTZ adapter, a new roadmap, and their highest-end camera ever – I’d like to put some of my thoughts to paper about the releases. Good and bad, what do these announcements say about Nikon’s future? Table of Contents 1. Sports are no longer the holdout of DSLRs The first sign that mirrorless cameras would replace DSLRs for sports and wildlife photography was Sony’s announcement of the A9 in August of 2017. Before that, mirrorless systems like the Nikon 1 series and Olympus’s lineup...

Nikon Z9 vs Sony A1

Nikon Z9 vs Sony A1 Now that Nikon’s Z9 has launched into the mirrorless world, the biggest question is how it stacks up against the competition. And while it’s a seriously impressive camera, the same can be said about other cameras on the market today. Perhaps the biggest competitor to the Nikon Z9 is the Sony A1. Nikon Z9 versus Sony A1, to scale How do these two cameras compare? It’s a back-and-forth battle in many ways, and it might simply come down to whether you prefer Nikon or Sony as a system. But before I get ahead of myself, let’s take a look at the specifications of the Z9 versus the A1 and how they...

How to Pre-Order the Nikon Z9 and the New Lenses

How to Pre-Order the Nikon Z9 and the New Lenses The Nikon Z9 has just been announced, and it’s nearly certain that it will be backordered and out of stock for a while – especially since the $5500 price is lower than expected. Nikon Z 400mm f/2.8 Development Announcement

Nikon Z 400mm f/2.8 Development Announcement It wouldn’t be a Nikon announcement day without at least one development announcement! This time it’s for the long-awaited 400mm f/2.8 telephoto prime. Nikon says this lens will have a built-in 1.4x teleconverter, turning it into a 560mm f/4. Nikon hasn’t said much else about the 400mm f/2.8. We don’t know when it will ship, how much it will cost, or how much it will weigh. We do at least know how it looks: The design tells us that it has some of Nikon’s most advanced features, such as multiple control rings and at least one custom function button (probably more). It also has vibration...

Two Nikon Z Lenses Announced: 24-120mm f/4 and 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6

Two Nikon Z Lenses Announced: 24-120mm f/4 and 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 Alongside the years-in-the-making announcement of Nikon’s flagship Z9 mirrorless camera, the company also unveiled two lenses from the Z-series roadmap: a Nikon Z 24-120mm f/4 S and a Nikon Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S. The two lenses will start shipping in February 2022. The most unexpected but welcome part of this announcement is that the 24-120mm f/4 does, in fact, max out at 120mm! The Nikon Z roadmap all this time has previewed a 24-105mm zoom instead. And while the difference between 105mm and 120mm isn’t night and day, the extra reach at the end of the zoom range is a meaningful...

Nikon Z9 Announcement: The Peak of Nikon Mirrorless On March 10, 2021, Nikon announced they were developing a flagship mirrorless camera. More than seven months later – after wild speculation, occasional leaks, and a handful of official teasers – the Z9 has been formally announced. Let me start with a brief list of the most important specifications: Sensor Resolution: 45.7 megapixels Native ISO Sensitivity: ISO 64-25,600 Sensor Type: Stacked CMOS Sensor Size: 35.9 × 23.9 mm full-frame sensor In-Body Image Stabilization: Yes Image Processor: EXPEED 7...

Nikon updates Z roadmap with 400mm F2.8 TC VR, 26mm FX, 24mm DX and 12-28mm DX lenses

Nikon updates Z roadmap with 400mm F2.8 TC VR, 26mm FX, 24mm DX and 12-28mm DX lenses Nikon has just updated its Z-mount lens roadmap, which has seen the addition of several new lenses, including 400mm, 600mm and 800mm telephoto prime lenses in the premium ‘S’ line. While full details on all the new roadmapped lenses are still forthcoming, Nikon has provided a little more information on the 400mm, including its F2.8 aperture, and the fact that it will include a built-in 1.4X teleconverter. The company is also teasing a ‘new coating’ which it claims will provide the highest anti-reflection performance in the company’s history. Other forthcoming...

Nikon announces new FTZ II, a smaller version of its F-mount to Z adapter

Nikon announces new FTZ II, a smaller version of its F-mount to Z adapter Nikon has announced a new version of its FTZ F-mount to Z-mount adapter. The FTZ II offers the same functionality as the original FTZ, but in a smaller form factor, and minus the built-in tripod mount. This should aid handling with some lenses, and, Nikon claims, makes it easier to use with the Z9’s integrated vertical grip. The new FTZ II dispenses with the inbuilt tripod screw mount of the original FTZ, but offers exactly the same support for F-mount lenses as the original model. According to Nikon, the smaller form factor of the FTZ II makes it easier to attach certain lenses to the...

Nikon Z9 initial review: We take a detailed look at Nikon’s new pro mirrorless camera

Nikon Z9 initial review: We take a detailed look at Nikon’s new pro mirrorless camera All images by DPReview The Nikon Z9 is a 45.7MP full-frame pro sports mirrorless camera: a high speed, 8K-shooting statement of intent from one of the industry’s biggest players. Nikon becomes the third brand to build a pro-grade mirrorless camera around a fast-readout, stacked CMOS sensor, and seems determined to show that has no intention of being an also-ran as the market moves to mirrorless. The Z9 is the first camera in this class to abandon the mechanical shutter entirely and, particularly in terms of video, it’s by far Nikon’s most ambitious camera yet. Key...

Nikon announces Z9, a 30 fps, 8K, Stacked CMOS professional mirrorless camera After quite a prolonged build-up, Nikon has finally launched the Z9, its flagship full-frame, Stacked CMOS mirrorless camera. It’s one of the most powerful cameras on the market, capable of up to 30 fps shooting in JPEG or 20 with Raw capture, and able to record 8K/30 video, with the promise of 12-bit Raw 8K/60 capture in a future firmware update. It’s also one of relatively few cameras on the market to completely forego a mechanical shutter, a design decision made possible by the impressively fast read-out speed of the new sensor. The Z9 becomes the first Nikon mirrorless camera...

Nikon announces Nikkor Z 24-120mm F4 S for Z-mount mirrorless cameras

Nikon announces Nikkor Z 24-120mm F4 S for Z-mount mirrorless cameras Nikon has just announced the Nikkor Z 24-120mm F4 S, a native Z-mount counterpart to the company’s popular AF-S F-mount lens. This lens replaces the 24-105mm F4 on Nikon’s roadmap, and we’re pleasantly surprised to see that the final product has just that bit of extra reach on the telephoto end. The Z 24-120mm F4 S is designed to be a high quality kit lens option for Z-mount users, with an optical formula comprising 16 elements in 13 groups. That includes three ED glass elements, three aspherical elements and one aspherical ED element. It offers an impressive 0.35m (1.15...

Though this lens has been on Nikon’s Z lens roadmap for some time, we didn’t known any specifics beyond its focal range – including the aperture range – until today. Being an ‘S’ line lens, Nikon says the Z 100-400mm is manufactured to a high standard, with extensive dust and moisture sealing (a good thing, as it’s an extending zoom design). Inside, there are a total of 25 elements in 20 groups, with 6 ED...

Video: Incredibly smooth FPV footage captured by a Pixel 6 Pro strapped to a drone [embedded content] Ken Dono, who runs the popular OriginaldoBo channel on YouTube, felt reviewers didn’t thoroughly test out the stabilization of Google’s Pixel 6 Pro Android smartphone. So, instead of walking around or hopping on a skateboard, he strapped it to a drone and tested the feature out himself. ‘I was thinking these phones are so good now and thought wouldn’t it be amazing if one day we had one camera to rule them all and just sent it,’ Dono tells DPReview. The model in question? An Apex FPV frame. The Pixel 6 Pro has pretty common dimensions for a larger...

Hands-on with the new Sony a7 IV

Hands-on with the new Sony a7 IV Back when we reviewed the Sony a7 III in 2018, it changed our perception of what a ‘basic’ full-frame mirrorless camera model was capable of. With solid image quality, autofocus, video features and battery life, it was truly a jack-of-all trades that we thought would be a great fit for all kinds of photographers. But at the time, its only real competitors from other brands were DSLRs: whereas today, the all-new a7 IV finds itself in a very different landscape. Sony obviously knows this, and compared to its predecessor, the a7 IV has been redesigned, refined, and updated in just...

Sony just packed a 1” stacked CMOS sensor into the Xperia Pro-I, but there’s a catch

Sony just packed a 1” stacked CMOS sensor into the Xperia Pro-I, but there’s a catch Sony has unveiled the Xperia Pro-I, its latest flagship smartphone with a triple camera array and a particularly headline-grabbing feature: for its main camera, it uses the same 20MP 1″-type stacked CMOS sensor with built-in memory and phase-detection autofocus as the one inside Sony’s RX100 VII compact camera. But there’s a catch: only a central section of that 20MP sensor is used to output a 12MP still (or 4K video), and that has some broad implications we’ll delve into below. It’s not the first time we’ve seen a 1″-type sensor in a smartphone:...

Sony Xperia Pro-I sample gallery The new Sony Xperia Pro I features a massive 20MP 1″-type stacked-CMOS Exmor RS imaging sensor with built-in DRAM. Only the central ~60% of the imaging area is used (producing a 12MP image) but for a smartphone, that still counts as a large sensor. The main camera offers a 24mm equivalent focal length and 315 PDAF autofocus points, with 90% field coverage. Rounding out the photography hardware is a 16mm equiv. F2.2 ultra-wide camera with a 1/2.5″ sensor, and a 50mm equiv. F2.4 telephoto camera with a 1/2.9″ sensor. All three cameras offer real-time autofocus tracking, and...

Video: Float along with a 360-degree tour of the International Space Station French astronaut Thomas Pesquet has been busy during his second stint on the International Space Station (ISS). We’ve previously seen his photos of a rare blue ‘transient luminous event,’ a stunning blue auroral display, and a photo that illustrates how quickly the ISS orbits Earth. It orbits Earth at about 7.66km per second, by the way. Pesquet is returning from space next month, but before he comes back, he produced a really cool 360-degree tour of the ISS. Nikon India leaks Z9 promo video revealing 8K/60p video, 120fps capture, 20fps Raw continuous shooting and more Nikon India appears to have accidentally leaked a promotional video for Nikon’s forthcoming Z9 mirrorless camera, confirming specifications not yet known. While Nikon has been releasing weekly teaser videos (1, 2, 3) for what will be its flagship mirrorless camera (so far three of the four planned teasers have been revealed), this one appears to be different, both in the visual style of the promotional video and in timing (we suspect the fourth teaser video in the series to be released later this week). Instead of the more abstract, cinematic-style footage as we’ve seen in the previous...

Sony A7 III vs Sony A7 IV Now that Sony has announced the A7 IV, a lot of photographers are wondering what it brings to the table compared to the previous generation A7 III. Sony is still selling the A7 III new ($2000, compared to $2500 for the IV), which adds to the confusion. In this article, I’ll compare the specifications of the Sony A7 III and A7 IV in detail and explain which one I recommend to photographers today. Ricoh announces new $1,400 21mm F2.4 ED Limited DC WR lens, set for November release

Ricoh announces new $1,400 21mm F2.4 ED Limited DC WR lens, set for November release When used for distant subjects such as landscapes, the lens assures solid, uniform image rendition across the image field. By further closing the aperture down, it delivers sharp, clear, high-resolution images, even at the edges. Its optical characteristics change for close-range photography. At open aperture, it provides a mild bokeh (defocused) effect in the background while capturing the main subject in sharp, crisp focus. As Janes explains in his thorough review for 35mmc, the Pentax Auto 110 wasn’t the first 110 SLR to market, but it was the smallest at the time of release and offered a unique design that appears to...

Sony releases totally redesigned FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II

Sony releases totally redesigned FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II Sony has announced the FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II, a redesigned replacement for one of the core pro-grade lenses in the E-mount lineup. The Mark II is built around two pairs of XD ‘Extreme Dynamic’ linear motors driving its two focus groups, rather than the mixture of linear motor and ring-type motor used in the older version. Sony promises focus is up to four times faster as a result. As before, the lens can move the two focus groups independently of one another, which helps it deliver a close-focus distance of 40cm (15.7″), less than half the 96cm (37.8“) offered by...

Nikon publishes second Z9 teaser, showing off the 8K video capabilities of its forthcoming mirrorless camera

Nikon publishes second Z9 teaser, showing off the 8K video capabilities of its forthcoming mirrorless camera [embedded content] Nikon has released the second teaser for its forthcoming Z9 mirrorless camera system. Unlike the first teaser, which showed off the unique dual-tilting display, this video doesn’t appear to confirm too many new details about the camera. The focus of this particular teaser is the Z9’s video capabilities, including its ability to record 8K video (7680  × 4320 pixels) at 30 frames per second (fps), a detail that was confirmed when the camera was first announced. It’s also shown that the camera can record above the standard 30 minute mark, with recording times extending over...

The Four Seasons of the Little Egret

The Four Seasons of the Little Egret As an amateur bird photographer, I often asked myself what is so special in birds, and why many people are so attracted by them. The answers to these questions are not unique and likely involve subjective feelings and personal motivations. Some are simply attracted by the fact that birds are challenging and fascinating subjects. Others may enjoy spending some time outdoors in close contact with nature, regardless of the possibility of getting any shot at all. Still, others may think of birds as excellent subjects due to their behavior and plumage color. Plumage color is one of the most...

Sony teases a new Xperia product announcement set for October 26 livestream

Sony teases a new Xperia product announcement set for October 26 livestream Sony has confirmed it will be making a new Xperia-related product announcement via livestream on Tuesday, October 26, 2021. Sony hasn’t shared any details regarding what we can expect from the announcement, but the teaser image suggests an emphasis on the photographic capabilities of the unannounced product, as the illustration seems to show off an abstracted design that bears resemblance to an optical element. Sony’s Xperia phone lineup has long been defined by its photographic and video capabilities, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that, once again, the Japanese multinational...

Ricoh GR IIIx vs Fujifilm X100V: which is the photographers’ compact king?

Ricoh GR IIIx vs Fujifilm X100V: which is the photographers’ compact king? We often see Ricoh’s 28mm equiv GR cameras discussed alongside Fujifilm’s X100 series models. The temptation is obvious: they’re two of the only large-sensor fixed lens cameras sold at anything approaching a mainstream price. But this ignores the fact that most photographers will have a strong preference for either the 28 or 35mm equivalent angle of view, and may be poorly served by one or other camera. This changes entirely with the launch of the Ricoh GR IIIx, a 40mm equiv version of the company’s storied photographers’ compact. With slightly wide-of-normal...

Video: First-ever look at crystals forming in real-time at atomic resolution

Video: First-ever look at crystals forming in real-time at atomic resolution Researchers at the University of Tokyo have combined novel techniques to record the first-ever atomic resolution video of salt crystals as they form in real-time. The team used the novel technique of atomic-resolution real-time video recording and the similarly novel technique of conical carbon nanotube confinement to achieve this impressive feat. Before diving in, it’s important to give context. Salt crystals, like other crystals such as snowflakes and diamonds, comprise repetitive arrangements of molecules. While crystals can take many different forms, something they all have in...

Returning to a Location

Returning to a Location If you frequently return to the same location for photography, how do your photos change over time? Do you gain a better understanding of the scene in front of you? These questions have been on my mind recently as I return to old locations for various reasons. To me, revisiting a location is one of the most powerful tools in the photographer’s toolbox. One reason is that it forces you to look beyond the obvious shot. In 2015, I first visited a popular overlook of Mt Sneffels in Colorado. The sky was bare, most of the aspens hadn’t changed color, and I didn’t really like the shot I took....

Stephen Dowling, founder of KosmoFoto, has written up an article detailing the history behind the first image captured on a Leica camera. In it, he details how Barnack, ‘an enthusiastic amateur photographer who often took cameras with him on his travels, ’took inspiration from his work on Leitz’s first...

Video: a Retro Review of Sony’s 24-year-old Mavica FD5 camera, which used floppy discs for storage [embedded content] Gordon Laing has shared another episode of Retro Reviews, this time reviewing the 24-year-old Sony Mavica FD5, one of Sony’s earliest digital cameras that recorded cameras directly to 3.5” floppy discs. The Mavica FD5 was released in 1997 and retailed for around $600. While not the first Mavica camera, it was the first digital Mavica camera. As Gordon explains in the 13-minute video, the selling point of the FD5 was its use of the ubiquitous 3.5” floppy disc as a storage medium. Whereas most other digital cameras in the mid-to-late 1990s either used built-in storage or...

Omnar Lenses reveals its first lens, a 26mm F6 M-mount lens made from Canon P&S optical elements Film photography publication 35mmc and manual lens specialist Skyllaney Opto-Mechanics have teamed up to create Omnar Lenses, a new lens manufacturer who has just revealed what will be the company’s first lens, the Omnar CN26–6, a 26mm F6 fixed-aperture M-mount lens. The lens is constructed of optical elements from Canon’s AF-10 point-and-shoot camera. Omnar Lenses says the lens is ‘a simple optic with a combination of [coated] glass and plastic elements.’ While Omnar Lenses claims it’s sharp, it does note the lens ‘definitely gives a strong [point-and-shoot] aesthetic to images.’ The lens...

CineStill launches RedRum, an ISO 200 redscale 120 film stock with ‘spooky’ autumn tones

CineStill launches RedRum, an ISO 200 redscale 120 film stock with ‘spooky’ autumn tones CineStill has released RedRum, a new ISO 200 medium format red scale film stock that will be available in limited quantities. Just in time for Halloween season, CineStill says this monochromatic film delivers red and yellow tones that makes for ‘spooky’ photographs. To achieve this look, CineStill takes its 800T emulsion and reverse rolls it through the reddish film base. This effectively reduces the sensitivity by four times, resulting in an ISO 200 film that cleverly takes advantage of the lack of an anti-halation layer of its 800T emulsion. The film works with standard C-41 lab processing...

Film Friday: 5 shots with ‘the worst lens Minolta ever made’

Film Friday: 5 shots with ‘the worst lens Minolta ever made’ What happens when you combine very expired film with a lens sometimes called ‘the worst lens Minolta ever made?’ You’d get this little 5 Frame feature from Iain Paterson for 35mmc. In this iteration of ‘5 Frames with,’ Paterson takes a look at the image quyality of the Minolta 35–80mm 1:4 (22) – 5.6 autofocus zoom lens as shot on a Minolta Dynax 500si Super SLR camera using expired Truprint 400 film. A nearly forgotten kit Paterson had ordered online, this little misfit kit did its best to make the most of a lens that is consistently considered ‘one of the worst lenses’ out there...

What to Photograph When There’s Nothing to Photograph

What to Photograph When There’s Nothing to Photograph I’m on the annual Photography Life fall colors workshop with Nasim, and our group ran into a tricky photographic situation this morning. A beautiful mountain overlook was completely blocked by clouds at sunrise, ruining any photos we had in mind. Time to pack it up and go home? Not quite. Here’s the shot we wanted to take, as captured by Nasim a few years ago: NIKON D850 + 24-120mm f/4 @ 38mm, ISO 64, 1/3, f/5.6 And here’s how sunrise looked today: GFX100S + GF63mmF2.8 R WR @ 63mm, ISO 100, 1/6, f/5.6 It’s hardly the view our group had hoped for after waking up at 5 AM, but sometimes that’s...

In July, Capture One released 14.3.0, which redesigned the Exporter experience. However, what was meant to be an improvement and overall simplification, was not a universal upgrade for all users. Some users strongly preferred the old Exporter and were upset that their workflows were disrupted. Capture One writes,...

TTartisan teases its first AF lens, a 32mm F2.8 for multiple full-frame, APS-C camera systems

TTartisan teases its first AF lens, a 32mm F2.8 for multiple full-frame, APS-C camera systems [embedded content] TTartisan has announced it will soon release a 32mm F2.8, its first autofocus lens. Very little information about the lens is revealed, aside from the mount options, which will include Canon RF, Canon EOS M, Fujifilm X, Nikon Z and Sony E mount camera systems. As it stands, this particular focal length is going up against quite a bit of competition in nearly every lens mount it’ll be offered in. The F2.8 aperture isn’t exactly inspiring, so its selling point across all lens mounts will likely be its price point, which hasn’t yet been announced. We’ll share another...

Tamron announces 35-150mm F2-2.8 Di III VXD and 28-75mm F2.8 G2 for E-mount Tamron has announced a 35-150mm F2-2.8 fast, flexible zoom for full-frame Sony E-mount bodies, alongside a second-gen version of its 28-75mm F2.8 standard zoom lens for the same system. Tamron describes its 35-150mm F2-2.8 Di III VXD as a ‘travel zoom’ with wide-to-telephoto coverage. We’re not sure we’d consider 35mm wide enough to describe it in quite those terms, but it’s certainly a usefully fast zoom that covers a very useful range of focal lengths. It can also be used as an approximately 53-225mm equiv on APS-C cameras, with the expected reduction in...

Canon EOS R3 and Canon EOS R5 compared

Canon EOS R3 and Canon EOS R5 compared The EOS R3 is Canon’s highest-end mirrorless camera yet, but it arrives into a range of already capable cameras. The EOS R5 impressed us a great deal, proving itself a worthy successor to the classic EOS 5D DSLRs, so what does the R3 do that’s different, and is it worth the extra money? The all-around capability of the R5 and the branding of the R3 mean it’s not quite as clear-cut as the distinction that existed between the 1D and 5D models. But it still essentially comes down to what you want to use the camera for. Let’s take a closer look at the two cameras’...

On January 6, 1839, François Arago, Secretary of the French Academy of Sciences, announced Daguerre’s invention and spoke of his accomplishment publicly, although he said nothing of the specific methods involved. By the middle of January, news of Daguerre’s invention had spread everywhere. Ultra-Large Format Cameras: When 300mm Is a Wide Lens

Ultra-Large Format Cameras: When 300mm Is a Wide Lens There’s no real upper limit to how large a camera sensor or film can be. “Full frame” cameras are smaller than medium format digital, which itself falls behind most medium format film – and so on. At the high end of the scale are Ultra-Large Format (ULF) film cameras. What is an ultra-large format camera? It’s any camera with an imaging area larger than 8×10 inches. In other words, each individual sheet of film – and it is film rather than digital, unless you’re NASA – is substantially larger than a standard sheet of printer paper. Even a basic 1200 PPI scan of ultra-large format film is...

Film Friday: Meet the Olympus OM-X, a modular, prototype camera that was meant to be the OM-1 The Olympus OM-1 was a revolutionary camera that changed the single-lens reflex (SLR) camera market by offering impressive image quality in a compact, reliable form factor with (relatively) small, high-quality lenses to boot. While its design shaped the industry for decades to come, it almost didn’t take on the form factor we now look back on. EU proposes legislation requiring USB-C charging ports on devices, including iPhones and digital cameras

EU proposes legislation requiring USB-C charging ports on devices, including iPhones and digital cameras Electronic waste is an ever-growing issue. The European Commission, an executive arm of the European Union, believes it’s a problem made worse by various devices utilizing different charging cables. Apple is a large culprit, thanks to its continued use of a proprietary Lightning cable for its iPhones and other devices. While some iPad models have shifted to USB-C ports for charging, the very popular iPhone uses a Lightning connector, even as most competitors have moved to the USB-C standard. Rather than leave charging port decisions up to manufacturers, the European Commission has...

Range Masks Explained: One of Lightroom’s Most Powerful Tools

Range Masks Explained: One of Lightroom’s Most Powerful Tools For years, Lightroom’s tools for selective adjustments left something to be desired. The “detect edges” feature often adds noise to soft areas like clouds, whereas the standard brush and gradient tools can affect too much of the image. Range masking fixes those problems. Table of Contents What Is Range Masking in Lightroom? Range masking was added to Lightroom a few years ago and has since become one of my favorite post-processing tools. Lightroom has two types of range masking: luminance (which selects portions of the image by brightness) and color (which does the same by color). Both are...

Historical footnote to technology of the future: three moments with the Canon EOS R3 that changed my opinion of Eye Control

Historical footnote to technology of the future: three moments with the Canon EOS R3 that changed my opinion of Eye Control The EOS R3’s Eye Control system works on a similar principle to the one used in the late 90’s and early 2000s, but isn’t really trying to select individual, discrete AF points To me, Eye Control has always been some great ‘what if,’ that inevitably gets mentioned when camera geeks of a certain age spent too much time together. I went straight from a manual focus SLR to digital cameras, so I’ve never felt those pangs of nostalgia, myself: it just sounded like a failed technology that even Canon seemed happy to forget about. But in the past months there have...

A dedicated amateur astronomer in Brazil caught an object hitting Jupiter’s surface An image of Jupiter taken by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope Brazilian amateur astronomer José Luis Pereira was shooting Jupiter on September 13 when an object struck the gas giant. Pereira used a QHY5III462C camera with a Newtonian 275mm F5.3 telescope in São Caetano do Sul, São Paulo, Brazil when he captured the incredible event. It was a clear night, so he recorded 25 videos to put through a program called DeTeCt. The software is used to analyze video and detect impacts on Jupiter and Saturn. The camera Pereira used records color at enhanced near-infrared wavelengths. It uses a 2MP...
