Six Months with the Fujifilm X-T1

Six Months with the Fujifilm X-T1 A Post By: Mathieu Gasquet You have probably read about it. You may have a friend who bought one. You may have noticed it on the streets. You have most certainly seen one in a camera store window. The Fujifilm X-T1 is currently one of the most popular mirrorless cameras, and is the model that is persuading many people to leave their DSLRs, be they enthusiast or professional photographers. For the past six months, I have been using it in various situations to discover exactly why people have fallen head over heels for Fujifilm’s high-end model. Dials versus menu system I began using the X-T1...

Follow Around Justin Borucki as He Captures Wet Plate Collodion Street Photography

Photographer Justin Borucki has spent the better part of a year and a half capturing Chinatown through the age old process of wet plate collodion photography. In this In Focus mini-documentary, American Photo takes a behind-the-scenes look at what a day on the streets with a massive large format camera look like. The five minute short is full of anecdotal advice and interesting tidbits off the top of Borucki’s head. Infrared Sports Photographer Walks You Through His IR Photography Workflow

Infrared Sports Photographer Walks You Through His IR Photography Workflow As great as infrared photography can be, for most of us, it’s an enigma that is often difficult to nail down since we’re capturing that which we can’t see with our eyes. However, just because we can’t actually see it, doesn’t mean we can’t teach our brain to visualize what the outcome will be when we snap the shutter. Here to help us learn how to ‘see’ infrared light is Danish photographer Esben Olesen, who takes a few minutes to walk us through his basic infrared workflow when shooting with his converted DSLR. In the short video, Olesen shares a number of tips and suggestions on how...

What Photographers Really Should Be Learning in School

What Photographers Really Should Be Learning in School A few weeks ago, we shared what 7 top photographers said they wished they had learned in school. Unsurprisingly, many mentioned a desire to have learned more about business and marketing. But beyond the selection of course subject, there is a more fundamental aspect of learning in the 21st century that should be addressed. Recently, I attended a lecture by Dr. Yong Zhao, a renown researcher in education, who has espoused many progressive ideas about the education system and how it is failing us. His thoughts made me reconsider the role of school for photographers and other creatives....

Enchanting Photos Share the Stories of Foster Children to Raise Awareness for Adoption

Enchanting Photos Share the Stories of Foster Children to Raise Awareness for Adoption Inspired by his own experience as an adopted child, Detroit-based photographer Rob Woodcox wanted to shed some light on the foster system he was fortunate enough to avoid. Thus was born the photo series/project Stories Worth Telling. The project came about after Cox graduated college, when his mother suggested he use his talents to volunteer at a foster camp. It was there at Royal Family Kids’ Camp that he did some reflection and realized just how different his life could’ve turned out had he not been adopted. It was these reflections, in combination with the inspiration he got from...

Over-Unders in Temperate Waters

Over-Unders in Temperate Waters By Andy Pearson   It may seem strange, but temperate coastal marine environments are actually much more productive than their counterparts in the tropics. This productivity supports a rich variety of marine life, as many scuba divers know. Britain’s coastline is no exception, with brightly colored nudibranchs, giant jellyfish and even basking sharks possible to see close inshore.    Some tourists—even seasoned divers—remain totally unaware of the diverse range of marine life just feet from the shore. With this in mind, I thought it...

5 Beginner Tips for More Autofocus Success

5 Beginner Tips for More Autofocus Success A Post By: Rick Berk When you’re just starting out, it can sometimes be frustrating trying to get sharp photos. The camera’s autofocus often seems like it has a mind of its own. Here are five quick tips that can help you get the autofocus under control. AI Servo AF or Continuous Focus will continue to track moving subjects. 1. What is your subject doing? If your subject is sitting still and not moving, be it a person, a still life, or a landscape, you’ll want to choose One-Shot autofocus (AF-S for single on Nikon). One shot AF allows the camera to focus, and then as long as the button is...

How to Use LAB Color in Photoshop to Add Punch to Your Images

How to Use LAB Color in Photoshop to Add Punch to Your Images A Post By: Jim Hamel Have you ever wished you could stretch out the color palette of your picture? Or that you could separate colors that looked too flat or close together? Well, with Photoshop, you can – by converting your picture to something called LAB colorspace and adjusting the color there. That might sound complicated, but it is actually pretty simple. If you have ever made a levels or curves adjustment, you already know everything you need to know to accomplish this. The left side of the picture is an anadjusted Raw file. The right side of the picture is the same except for a curves...

The photographer’s perfect pick? Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX100 review

I returned this inferior camera. The EVF wheel was stuck not giving adjustment until I rocked it by force. The jpegs are pathetic, not in focus. I took 400 pictures and less than 5 were sharp. And I have not one complain of my other 40 cameras including RX100, RX100III, Fuji X100, D700, D7000, D40, Coolpix A, GR, E-PL7, PL5, PM2, Stylus 1, GM1, etc., not 1 complain. I have heard of a bad batch in the forums, but I just never saw a more pathetic camera. OK I am not a pro, but I have taken 90,000 pictures and only the LX100 was OOF jpegs OOC. Many have also complained. Source Article from...

Leica 35mm Lens Cross Section Diagram Tattoo

Leica 35mm Lens Cross Section Diagram Tattoo Photographer Rick Satureyes shares this tattoo he recently had inked onto his forearm. Rather than a standard design featuring a camera or lens, he chose to go with a cross-section diagram of a lens. More specifically, Satureyes chose the diagram of a Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH lens. The technical illustration is “99% technically accurate as far as my research has shown,” he tells us. (He did add some black shading on certain elements for aesthetics.) Here’s a clearer look at what the diagram looks like: While the tattoo was being done, Satureyes snapped a few shots of the...

‘The Neighbours Project’ Captures the Stories of Denver’s Homeless in Words and Tintypes

‘The Neighbours Project’ Captures the Stories of Denver’s Homeless in Words and Tintypes Dylan Burr is a full-time artist from Denver, Colorado, but despite his busy schedule and full-time job, Burr recently embarked on a personal photography project on the side. The project, however, wasn’t for him. His goal was to use the raw power of wet plate collodion portraiture to give a name and story to the Denver Area homeless. Titled The Neighbours Project, Burr interview and photographed 30 people who use the local St. Francis Center, which helps supplement them with basic needs as much as possible. By taking down their stories in their own words, and photographing them with...

Pixact.ly: An Online Game That Lets You See How Well You Can Eyeball Pixel Counts

Pixact.ly: An Online Game That Lets You See How Well You Can Eyeball Pixel Counts If you do a lot of photo editing, you’ve likely gotten pretty used to making estimates of pixel dimensions. But how good are you, exactly? A new browser-based game called Pixact.ly wants to help you answer that question. It’s based around the simple idea of drawing a box with specific pixel dimensions. The premise is super simple. Just go to Pixact.ly and click Enter. Once you’ve started the ‘game,’ you’ll be given a resolution and asked to drag out a box that matches. There are 5 ’rounds,’ and the closer you get to the appropriate dimensions, the more points you’ll accrue. It starts...

Here are Portraits of Dogs Flying Through the Air

Here are Portraits of Dogs Flying Through the Air We’ve featured photos of dogs underwater, mid-shake, during bath time and in the middle of a gratuitous lick… but this is the first set of portraits we’ve seen that capture dogs in-flight. Well, not quite flight… more like ‘falling with style,’ to borrow a line from Toy Story. The series is called Freestyle, and the images were captured by German photographer Julia Christe as a followup to her previous experiment with mid-air canines dubbed Ups and Downs. We caught up with Christe to learn more about the images, and she provided us with some backstory. This series, it turns out,...

A Cheaper Filter Holder for the Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 Created with 3D Printing

A Cheaper Filter Holder for the Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 Created with 3D Printing Need a piece of gear but can’t find a reasonably priced option? Perhaps 3D printing could help. That’s what photographers Patrick Ludolph and Christian Steinkrüger. After not finding an affordable filter solution for his Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 lens, Ludolph approached Steinkrüger — a 3D printing hobbyist — with the idea of creating a custom filter holder themselves. Steinkrüger had Ludolph send him complete measurements of the lens. Then it became a task of trial and error. Steinkrüger spent 50 hours working and reworking the design so that it would fit the Nikon lens perfectly. Each...

Writer’s Favorite Lens the Nifty Fifty on a Cropped Sensor Camera

Writer’s Favorite Lens the Nifty Fifty on a Cropped Sensor Camera A Post By: Meredith Clark Growing up, the first letter of my last name was towards the end of the alphabet, which meant that I was one of the last kids who got to choose my electives in high school. It was for this reason that I ended up with strange electives such as Physics, Advanced Placement Composition, Metal Shop, and eventually Black and White Photography. I was less than thrilled about taking Photography – I had SATs to take, colleges to get in to, and certainly did not have time for a photography class taught by the Psychology teacher who was notorious for making kids walking around...

How to Find Great Backgrounds for Portraits

How to Find Great Backgrounds for Portraits A Post By: Andrew S. Gibson I used a short telephoto lens at a wide aperture to throw the cliff in the background out of focus in this photo. With this technique, the background itself isn’t so important as no-one can tell what it is, but it must still complement the subject. Finding great backgrounds that complement the subject is an essential part of the process of creating beautiful portraits. My article How to Plan the Perfect Portrait Shoot will help you with the other aspects of putting together a portrait shoot, but today I thought it would be interesting to delve deeper into the...

Nikon celebrates Df’s first birthday with gold edition If the gold-adorned Nikon Df from Brikk was a bit much for your taste, Nikon Japan has something slightly more restrained for the discerning Df owner. It has announced a limited edition version of its Df DSLR that uses gold where the standard version uses bare metal. Produced as a limited edition to mark the first anniversary of the launch of the Nikon Df, the gold model will come in two forms – body only, or paired with a gold-ringed AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G. There will be 600 units of the body-only form, and 1000 of the kit with the lens. Accessories to match these gold...

Sony debuts 21MP stacked CMOS sensor for smartphones

Sony debuts 21MP stacked CMOS sensor for smartphones Sony has unveiled a new stacked CMOS image sensor for use in smartphones. Called the IMX230, it features 21 effective megapixels, on-chip phase detection AF and 4K video recording. The chip is a 1/2.4-inch type with square pixels measuring 1.12um x 1.12um each. Video of up to 4K (4096 x 2160) resolution is available with HDR function (also available in stills mode). The sensor uses a backside-illuminated configuration previously introduced by Sony called Exmor RS, with a layer of signal processing circuits below a layer of backside-illuminated pixels. Pentax 645Z added to studio comparison database

In the US, the Pentax 645Z with its normal lens costs $9694, and the camera has a 44x33mm, 40 MP sensor. Mamiya offers (1) the DM kit (including back and lens) for $9990 with a back that has a 48x36mm, 22 MP sensor; and (2) the Leaf kit, which has a back with a 44x33mm, 40 MP sensor for $12,995. So with Mamiya, if what you really want is sensor size, you can get a bigger one for about the same money. If you need 40 MP and will accept the somewhat smaller sensor, it costs you about 34% more. IMO, for someone who needs this gear, those are all competitors. What is better for a particular...

Supercell Cloud ‘Cinemagraphs’ by a Storm Chasing Photographer Photographer Mike Hollingshead has gained quite a bit of exposure online for his jaw-dropping photos of storms across the United States. We featured his work here in January of 2014. Recently, Hollingshead has begun to branch out his work into a new direction: cinemagraphs. Tip: Two Strips of Velcro Can Make for a Super Simple Accessory Holder for Your Strap If you’re a fan of thrifty DIY substitutes for camera accessories, here’s a quick and easy one for you: you can easily carry spare batteries (and other items and accessories) on your camera or bag strap using two strips of Velcro. More accurately, you’ll need a roughly 2-inch wide section of Velcro, with one hook strip and one loop strip. These step-by-step photos by Instructables member hagay1974 show how it’s done. The loop strip is used to secure the battery and hook strip to the strap, and the hook strip is used to keep the loop strip closed: The main thing is cutting your strips...

BTS: Creating a Sports Action Shot Using 3D Printed Figurines

BTS: Creating a Sports Action Shot Using 3D Printed Figurines Photographer Dan Vojtěch teamed up with Red Bull wakeskater Zuzana Vráblová for a unique and technologically challenging photo shoot. Vojtěch and his team utilized 3D scanning technology, 3D printing, and studio photography to create some eye-catching images. The first step was to use a complicated DSLR rig to ‘scan’ the model with 115 separate images. These images, after being cleaned up, were used to create a physical 3D figurine using 3D printing. Once the little figurines were created, the next step was to place them on a miniature stage to be photographed. The resulting image is...

A Quirky Portrait Series that Features ‘Elderly Kids’

A Quirky Portrait Series that Features ‘Elderly Kids’ Los Angeles-based photographer Zachary Scott of Sharpe & Associates was recently commissioned by New York Times Magazine to shoot a quirky series of portraits for a feature titled, “What if Age Is Nothing but a Mind-Set?” The piece was about the area of reverse aging research, so Scott’s task was to make a group of kids look like they had instantly aged 70 years or so. Scott and his team used props, prosthetic makeup, and digital trickery to create their “believable time warp effect.” Scott definitely has a knack for this type of work, but unfortunately for him, most people wish...

The Photographer’s Guide to Self-Promotion

The Photographer’s Guide to Self-Promotion A Post By: Nancy Young By Deanna Wardin Have you ever been told by your parents “Don’t talk about yourself too much; people won’t like you!” or “Don’t show off!”? Talking too much about your achievements leads not only to criticism, but can also lead to disappointment. There is always going to be someone who worked harder and who has done more than you. The minute you realize you’ve achieved so much in your personal and work life, the reality smacks you and shows you that you’re too big for your boots. Some of us engage in far too much self-adulation and bragging, while the rest of us are...

Some Wedding Photography Tips with Two Different Perspectives

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt Today I wanted to share these two videos with you that offer pretty my completely opposite ways to do wedding photography; candid storytelling and posed shots. In this first video 19 year wedding veteran  photographer, Joe Buissink, talks about his philosophy on shooting weddings in a storytelling style. He says he started in 1995, I actually have him beat on that one – 1990 for me. Unlike Joe however, I started off doing the more traditional posed style which was popular at the time. Eventually I became a bit bored with it and moved towards using 35mm cameras...

Poignant Portraits of Americans in Debt Explore the Role Debt Plays in Our Personal Identity

Poignant Portraits of Americans in Debt Explore the Role Debt Plays in Our Personal Identity For photographer Brittany M. Powell, debt isn’t just the subject of a personal portrait project, it’s a harsh reality that she’s had to face herself. Inspired by her own experience with debt and bankruptcy after the financial crisis in 2008, she set out to expose the truth about debt and how it impacts both our society and our personal identity in The Debt Project. At its core, The Debt Project is as much for the subjects as it is for the photographer and the ultimate viewers. A mixed-media project, each portrait is attached to a video interview and a short written statement in which...

Summer Fades Into Fall in This Simple Image Made Up of a Few Smartphone Photographs

Summer Fades Into Fall in This Simple Image Made Up of a Few Smartphone Photographs Here’s a neat idea you can try next time the seasons change. All it took to create the image above was a couple of months of dedication, a smartphone, and a bit of work in Photoshop. No special gear, and not that much in way of effort, but a pretty cool (if a bit over-saturated) final product. Meant to be just a fun project, graphic design student Kurt Rasos went out to a place near his home in Beaverton, OR every week for two months with his Android smartphone, leaned against a tree for stability/consistency, and combined the resulting photos in Photoshop. From left to right, you get...

Sample Footage Shot with the Ultra Rare Nikkor 6mm f/2.8 that Can See Behind Itself

Sample Footage Shot with the Ultra Rare Nikkor 6mm f/2.8 that Can See Behind Itself About once per year, one of the rare Nikkor 6mm f/2.8 lenses out there pops up on eBay when some camera shop or another picks one up. The price ranges from $60K to $160K and it’s gotten to the point where we usually just ignore the listings because… well… we’ve covered them enough times. But when one of our readers tipped us off to a new listing earlier today, we took notice, because this one comes with a sample video of the lens in action. The folks at Photografica in Denmark slapped their copy onto a Nikon D4s and created the video above showing the 6mm from all angles, and sample...

Tutorial: How to Capture a Motion Time-Lapse of the Milky Way from Start to Finish

Tutorial: How to Capture a Motion Time-Lapse of the Milky Way from Start to Finish Ian Norman, the astrophotographer behind Lonely Speck, is a good friend of the blog and an incredibly generous photographers when it comes to sharing his years worth of expertise with the world. His latest video tutorial is no exception, as Norman shows you, step-by-step, how to create a beautiful motion time-lapse sequence of the Milky Way inching its way across the night sky. This is no 5-minute, just the basics tutorial; Norman spends 20+ minutes explaining everything from how to capture a quality photo of the Milky Way, to capturing a basic time-lapse sequence of those photos, to...

Writer’s Favorite Lens – the Canon 40mm Pancake Lens

Writer’s Favorite Lens – the Canon 40mm Pancake Lens A Post By: Suzi Pratt Like many beginning photographers, I’ve been a long-time fan of zoom lenses throughout much of my four year photography career. This past year, however, something in my brain shifted and I began to first accumulate and suddenly prefer using prime lenses. I began with the humble Canon 50mm f/1.8, eventually adding a 100mm f/2.8 macro lens. For many months, this combination of lenses paired with my Canon 6D became my preferred travel photography kit, replacing my beloved 16-35mm f/2.8. I loved the compact, significantly lighter kit that I was now able to tote around in my...

3 Creative Uses of the Drop Shadow in Photoshop

3 Creative Uses of the Drop Shadow in Photoshop A Post By: Sarah Hipwell Default Drop Shadow applied to Text Layer styles are a great way to add effects to your images in Photoshop. In this article, you will learn about the Drop Shadow. A typical example of the drop shadow effect in Photoshop is to add a 3D look to your text. Another example is when working with multiple images in the same document, the cutout elements should appear seamless in the background. A drop shadow effect can also be used in a creative way to make your image stand out. You get into the layer styles in Photoshop, by clicking on the fx icon at the bottom of the...

UK Landscape Photographer of the Year winners announced

Go see it larger, it looks less ‘painterly’ (whatever the hell that means). It’s an image you have to let your eyes rest on for a while. It’s not the typical “wow, look at that!” image which get high views on social network sites. Look at it deeply, consider the contours, the crevices, the shades in the rock, the way vegetation tries to cling on to the windblasted slopes. It’s a beautiful representation of Glen Coe, a perfect summary of the feeling of being there. Only a confident, accomplished photographer would have chosen to highlight that. Source...

BTS: How To Simply and Effectively Light a Fitness Shoot with Three Lights

BTS: How To Simply and Effectively Light a Fitness Shoot with Three Lights Photographer Miguel Quiles recently created this quick, informative behind-the-scenes look at how he shot an impressive set of fitness photos using just three lights in a fairly small studio setup. The three-minute video comes off a tiny bit like a commercial for Photoflex, but commercial value aside, it offers some great information on how to make the most of a small space and a fairly simple setup. After opening up the video with an introduction of the lighting gear, Quiles dives into the setup, explaining the positioning of each light and what purpose it will serve for the final...

Wildlife Photographer Adam Jones Takes Canon’s 7D Mark II Into the Wild for a Real World Review

Wildlife Photographer Adam Jones Takes Canon’s 7D Mark II Into the Wild for a Real World Review When cameras get put through a review, it’s often done at a pixel-peeping level in a studio, where the lighting is consistent across the board and variables are few and far between. This is NOT one of those reviews. When it came time to review Canon’s new APS-C flagship, the 7D Mark II, DPReview reached out to professional wildlife photographer Adam Jones and asked him to take the camera out into the wild… literally. The twenty-three minute review of the camera starts out with DPReview Editor Barney Britton talking with Jones about the Mark II and what they should be expecting...

Photographs That Reveal the Intricate Innards of Old Mechanical Calculators

Photographs That Reveal the Intricate Innards of Old Mechanical Calculators Photographer Kevin Twomey has a fascination with capturing complex objects in the most simple of compositions, and his series Low Tech is the epitome of this. The series features photos of old, mechanical calculators stripped bare, exposing the exquisitely complicated creations that they were from the inside out. Similar to the advancements of cameras, calculators have evolved from a purely mechanical piece of machinery to digital gadgets that are now almost small enough to hide behind a silver dollar. Regardless of how large and cumbersome those old mechanic calculators were though,...

The Guardian: Photos Don’t Belong in Art Galleries

The Guardian: Photos Don’t Belong in Art Galleries Does photography deserve a place in art galleries? Jonathan Jones doesn’t think so. The Guardian art columnist has caused quite a stir after writing a piece titled, “Flat, soulless and stupid: why photographs don’t work in art galleries.” While Jones acknowledges that photographs can be “powerful, beautiful, and capture the immediacy of a moment like nothing else,” he argues that they are, “poor art when hung on a wall like paintings.” They’re simply a “flat, soulless, superficial substitute for painting,” he says, and it looks stupid when we hang it like a painting and try to give it...

Weekly Photography Challenge Worm’s Eye View

Weekly Photography Challenge Worm’s Eye View A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt This week I rounded up a bunch of images taken low to the ground, otherwise known as worm’s eye view. It’s not a common view that people see, so images you create shot from this angle have a unique look and pique interest with viewers. Your job is to take on this low down task and shoot from the ground level. Here are some examples for you: By Stephan Rebernik By Stephan Rebernik By Stephan Rebernik By Tim Hamilton By Dr. Motte By AJ Mangoba There’s no special equipment needed to do this, or magical subject matter. A Collection of Low to the Ground Images

A Collection of Low to the Ground Images A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt Creating an original image can sometimes be challenging. One of the best ways to do it is to change up your camera angle or perspective. Getting up high and looking down is one method, another is crawling around in the dirt to get a worm’s eye view. As you can imagine the name comes from approximating the view a worm would have from his angle on the ground. Being low to the ground will set your images apart because the average person doesn’t see that way, or take photos from down there. It can also mean looking straight up. Here are some worm’s eye view images...

Phase One to introduce A-Series mirrorless medium format camera system Update: It appears that Digital Transitions made information about the new Phase One A-series public before an official announcement, and Phase One has responded with the following letter to clear up some confusion – our original news story appears below: Letter from Phase One While product teams have been hard at work preparing the new A-series camera systems for market, Phase One and ALPA are happy to see such interest based on the early news shared by some of our U.S. partners. Olympus OM-D E-M5 rumored to be out of production

I think it’s practical that DPR informs us otherwise out-of-time folks also about not confirmed rumors, although I see unhappy comments below. To be honest, not everyone has enough time to check all the rumors sites every single day, but DPR belongs so far to sites which a few users visit daily ;-). I personally prefer to be informed also about rumors (which were in in this case in the air anyway months ago, so they are likely to happen), than to be totally surprised when it may be happens, as such information might influence buying decisions, as if one should get the vertical grip for...

Is Black and White Photography a Gimmick?

Is Black and White Photography a Gimmick? In an age where digital photography is ubiquitous, and post processing allows everyman to bump saturation levels and create hyper-real images, black and white photography seems like a curious anachronism. Color film went mainstream in the 1930s with the introduction of Kodachrome, but black and white has stubbornly persisted not only in newspapers, but also as an expressive outlet for many photographers who choose to shoot photojournalism, weddings, portraits and more by converting color digital files to black and white. Even Leica jumped on the (retro) black and white train by...

Tutorial: A Much More Effective Way to Correct for Distortion in a Fisheye Photograph

Tutorial: A Much More Effective Way to Correct for Distortion in a Fisheye Photograph When it comes to correcting the distortion on fisheye lenses, most of us use the fairly standard rectilinear methods built into Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw. And while that gets the job done decently well, there’s a way to go about it that will leave you with a lot less noticeable distortion and more of your image still intact. The above tutorial was shared by astrophotographer Ian Norman, and in it, he explains how this alternative method — which uses Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop and Image Trends’ $30 Fisheye-Hemi Plugin — works far better when you’re wanting to save more of your...

In the BTS video above, Beattie narrates the process of filming the unusual music video, tossing out some mind-blowing statistics about just how much walking and effort it took to get the job done. Improve your Images with Photography Projects

Improve your Images with Photography Projects A Post By: Andrew S. Gibson Have you ever been in a situation where you are stuck for ideas about what to take photos of? I certainly have, and a lot of it comes from being so familiar with my surroundings that it’s hard to see the photographic potential in anything. A newcomer to my local area would probably see it completely differently, and find lots of inspiration. Given that most of us spend the majority of the year at home, is there an easy way to find inspiration? There is – the secret is to get in the habit of setting yourself photography projects. Projects are a way of giving...

Samsung developing 360 degree panoramic 3D camera for VR headsets

Samsung developing 360 degree panoramic 3D camera for VR headsets New display technologies often have the problem that, due to a lack of cameras that support the new format, there is very little content available for them. Virtual reality (VR) headsets, such as the Oculus Rift or recently announced Samsung Gear VR are no different. Think Tank Team, a research division of Samsung, is now looking to mitigate the problem with the help of Project Beyond, a camera that captures 360 degree images and video footage that can be viewed on the Gear VR.  Project Beyond is still in the prototype stage, however Samsung is already taking a few working units...

Video Profile of Mark Gee, 2013 Astronomy Photographer of the Year

2013 was a fantastic year for astrophotographer Mark Gee. First, barely one month into the year, he went from amateur photographer to Internet sensation when his gorgeous video “Full Moon Silhouettes” went viral. And then, to finish out the year, he took home the top prize at the Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2013 competition with his beautiful “Guiding Light” photograph. In the video profile above by New Zealand’s The Learning Connection, we get to know Mark and his history, hear about his meteoric (pardon the pun) rise to astrophotography stardom (there’s another one), and pick...

Along the outside of the device, there is an array of 16 Full-HD cameras, each of which have an ultra-wide-angle lens...

Did You Know: Publishing Nighttime Photos of the Eiffel Tower is Copyright Infringement

Did You Know: Publishing Nighttime Photos of the Eiffel Tower is Copyright Infringement According to an oft-forgotten clause in EU copyright laws, it is illegal to publish nighttime photos of certain public buildings in certain countries without asking permission from the owners of the buildings. So why isn’t everyone who captures and posts images of iconic building such as France’s Eiffel Tower prosecuted then? Because the clause and accompanying law are rather vague, only accepted by certain states, and all-round confusing to interpret. Certain buildings also have their own rules in place, such as the rules the Eiffel Tower website lays out, which state: Daytime views...

To Aspiring Professional Photographers: What If The Problem Is That You Suck?

To Aspiring Professional Photographers: What If The Problem Is That You Suck? These days a lot of people seem to be offering advice in the area of becoming a full time professional photographer. Some of those folks, like Greg Heisler, Jay Meisel, Gail Mooney and others, have long careers and great inspirational advice for those who are beginning the journey. Others, whose names I won’t mention, and hosts of FB, G+, and Flickr shooters want you to know that the life sucks, the cameras suck, the business sucks, and the whole idea of being a professional photographer is a total pile of crap – and it sucks, of course. Count me among those in the first group, with...

How to Correct Purple Fringing in Photoshop

How to Correct Purple Fringing in Photoshop A Post By: Annie Tao A couple years after starting my business, I received a large print from my lab. Upon checking it, I noticed a problem with the print that was so blatant I couldn’t deliver it to my client. At first I thought the lab made the mistake, but nope. It was a problem created by my digital camera when I took the shot! It’s more than likely you’ve already noticed it in your images. The problem is called purple fringing. In this article I’ll go over what it is, how to prevent it, and how to get rid of it. What is Purple Fringing? Purple fringing is when you get purple color in...

Understanding Depth of Field for Beginners

Understanding Depth of Field for Beginners A Post By: Bruce Wunderlich You may have heard the term depth of field (DoF), but if you are new to photography you may not yet be taking advantage of how DoF can enhance your photos. A basic definition of depth of field is: the zone of acceptable sharpness within a photo that will appear in focus. In every picture there is a certain area of your image in front of, and behind the subject that will appear in focus. This zone will vary from photo to photo. Some images may have very small zones of focus which is called shallow depth of field. Others may have a very large zone of focus which is...

Skyfire Predicts and Maps Out Where the Best Golden Hour Light Will Be a Day in Advance

Skyfire Predicts and Maps Out Where the Best Golden Hour Light Will Be a Day in Advance When you’re looking to get out and grab some landscape or sunset photography, getting the perfect light is usually a game of chance, but a new web app called Skyfire is looking to change that. By using a proprietary algorithm, Skyfire creates a heat map of light quality, ranked on a scale of 1 to 5, across the United States so you can find the perfect spot and plan your trip ahead of time. The initial idea was to only predict the beauty of a sunrise the night before, but the concept eventually evolved into a full-fledged light quality radar overlaid onto Google Maps. In its current...

Behind the Scenes with Retired Combat Photographer Stacy Pearsall and the Veterans Portrait Project

Behind the Scenes with Retired Combat Photographer Stacy Pearsall and the Veterans Portrait Project In the US, today is Veterans Day. For those in the British Commonwealth, today is Remembrance Day (also referred to as Poppy Day). It seemed right to end this day with a post that would, in some small way, honor the men and women who serve in the armed forces across the globe. To that end, we have for you a short, inspirational video by B&H featuring retired combat photographer Stacy Pearsall. In the video, the B&H Prospectives team takes a behind-the-scenes look at the retired Staff Sergeant and combat photographer’s own Veterans Portrait Project. Pearsall shares her story...

WallApp Shows You What Your Photo Would Look As Wall Art in a Room

WallApp Shows You What Your Photo Would Look As Wall Art in a Room Want to see what one of your photos would look like as wall art in a living space? WallApp can show you. It’s a new browser-based tool that lets you see your photos in the context of a room without having to create a mockup yourself in Photoshop. The service is extremely simple: all you need to do is drag a photo from your computer into the web app. Once the image is loaded up, you can resize it and choose which room photo to combine the image with. After you’re satisfied with sizing and positioning, a “Save File” button allows you to download the mockup as a JPEG image. Here are a...

Kiera Knightly Says Film Photographers See the Person, Digital Photographers See a Screen

Kiera Knightly Says Film Photographers See the Person, Digital Photographers See a Screen Many of you have already no-doubt heard of Kiera Knightly’s recent photoshoot and interview with Interview Magazine [Warning: NSFW], in which she posed topless on the condition they wouldn’t Photoshop her body before publishing the final shot. And while her comments on the excessive use of Photoshop have been the source of most of the interview’s popularity, one comment about photographers was much more fascinating to us. Picked out by the folks over at The Phoblographer, Knightly’s comment about the difference, in her experience, between film and digital photography speaks volumes in...

DIY Strobe Reflector Uses an IKEA Lampshade and Leaves Your Modeling Light Smelling of Coffee

DIY Strobe Reflector Uses an IKEA Lampshade and Leaves Your Modeling Light Smelling of Coffee If you happen to have an old studio light sitting around, or you’ve found a set on Craigslist you’d like to pick up, we found a clever DIY hack that you should take a look at. Put together by Instructables user gmjhowe, the hack uses an IKEA lampshade and the bottom of a coffee tin to make a basic, but impressive, reflector. As with all DIY activities, you have to start with the materials. For this one, you’re going to need an IKEA Foto lampshade, a cheap adapter that has your strobe’s proper mount, some small nuts and bolts, a file, a drill and a handsaw or plier cutters. Once you’ve...

How To Handle Personal and Religious Items In Real Estate Photography

Writer’s Favorite Lens – the 50mm f/1.4 Lens

Writer’s Favorite Lens – the 50mm f/1.4 Lens A Post By: Melinda Smith 1/400, f/4.0, ISO 320 It’s easy to love the 50mm f/1.4 lens. It’s a jack-of-all-trades. It’s that best friend that never lets you down. It’s the cowboy of all the lenses; it can pretty much do anything you ask it to do. If I was forced to only keep one lens, I’d have to choose this one. I’d even go as far as to say that most of you probably have this lens, and if you don’t, you should. Sometimes the 50mm f/1.4 doesn’t get appreciated as much as it deserves to be. It’s unassuming. It doesn’t look intimidating and professional on your camera. It doesn’t cost you an arm...

Then family picture day comes and you wish they’d just sit down and be still for five seconds. Photographing children comes with its own brand of challenges, but if you arrive to a session with a few tricks in your bag, you’ll come away from that shoot with pictures that perfectly capture that what being a kid is all about. Here are five tips to help you have more stress-free and successful child portraits 1 – Kids Don’t Like Dictators Children are...

Samsung NX1 real-world sample images

If you’re talking about JPEG, ignore everything I’m about to say. If you’re talking about Raw, that’s just not true. The D7100 is one of the best high ISO performers out there amongst APS-C cameras. DxO’s SNR 18% data, which essentially answers the question ‘how clean are my midtones?’, shows the D7100 and 7D II are neck to neck. Our own studio test scene shots here show that even when the D7100 gets 1/3 EV less light than the 7D II, it’s barely any worse in terms of amount of noise. Compared to the G1X II & Sony a6000, despite getting 2/3...

The Earth and Moon Captured Together by Chinese Spacecraft Camera

The Earth and Moon Captured Together by Chinese Spacecraft Camera Check out this amazing photograph of our planet with the Moon hovering in the background. It was published today by China’s State Administration of Science, and was captured by the country’s Chang’e 5-T1 spacecraft that did a flyby of the moon late last month. A description on the page states that the image was captured yesterday by the spacecraft’s service module as it orbited Earth at a distance of about 336,000 miles from Earth and 572,000 miles from the Moon. By comparison, the “Blue Marble” photo captured by Apollo 17 was shot at a distance of about 28,000 miles. The same...

This CCTV System Edits Out People and Other Moving Objects On the Fly

This CCTV System Edits Out People and Other Moving Objects On the Fly While the video above is a bit short and doesn’t explain what exactly is going on, the technology at work in the video is intriguing to say the least — especially for CCTV cameras. According to New Scientist, the system was created by San Francisco-based imaging company Prism Skylabs, who is in the business of collecting analytics of sort for retail stores. Usually, its technology is precise enough to track almost every detail of a shopper’s trip, from how long they’re in the store to what products they pick up. But this system is different. Aware of the invasion-of-privacy issues...

Video: The Life and Work of Iconic Photographer Robert Doisneau Ted Forbes of The Art of Photography is back at it again, taking an in-depth look at the life and work of another inspirational and iconic figure in the world of photography. This time, the subject is French photographer Robert Doisneau. A contemporary of Henri-Cartier Bresson and a man who had a great impact on the classic era of European photojournalism, Doisneau captured some truly iconic images between the 1930s and 1950s. The nineteen minute video breaks Doisneau’s incredible life down into bite-sized chunks. Forbe’s speaks to Doisneau’s composition, his play on humor in a number...

Time-Lapse Perfectly Captures the Sunset Through a Hole in a Norwegian Mountain

It may have taken Harald Warholm years of trial and error, but he finally captured the time-lapse he’d dreamt of. The final video, embedded above, shows the sun passing perfectly behind and shining through Torghatten, a well-known mountain near Brønnøysund, Norway. The clip is a mere 41 seconds, but it took days and days of work over the course of three long years to capture this event, which Warhol says only happens twice a year — once in Spring, and once in Fall. Instagram Finally Lets You Edit Captions After You Post, No More Typeos… Typoes… Typos

Instagram Finally Lets You Edit Captions After You Post, No More Typeos… Typoes… Typos The new update to Instagram, launched just hours ago and rolling out to both iOS and Android as we type this, brings two major feature upgrades. First: Instagram is making it easier to explore and discover new accounts to follow. And second: you can FINALLY edit captions after you post a photograph. The second update is the headline-making one, and will no doubt take some of the stress out of crafting the perfect photo caption for fear of posting a typo. Because, as we all know, misspelling something on the Internet is punishable by troll. Once updated, the menu that pulls up when you...

How to Correct Skin Blemishes Using the Patch Tool in Photoshop

How to Correct Skin Blemishes Using the Patch Tool in Photoshop A Post By: Lori Peterson There are many articles that discuss the overuse of skin smoothing in portrait photography. Photographers strive to find a balance between realistic skin and fixing the imperfections. Obviously, one way to minimize the use of Photoshop for skin issues is to hire a phenomenal makeup artist who can make the skin look realistic and flawless all at the same time. For the times when there are issues with a client’s skin I try to not go overboard and fix every little thing. I want my client to still look like themselves when I am done editing. Some photographers use the...

Top 10 Mistakes that Cause Blurry Photos

Top 10 Mistakes that Cause Blurry Photos A Post By: Anne McKinnell If your photos are not sharp, you are not alone! But if you go through this list of the top 10 mistakes that cause blurry photos, you will probably find the answer that works for you. 1. Your shutter speed is too slow This is the #1 culprit of blurry photos. You might think you can hold perfectly still for half a...

Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM becomes a reality

Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM becomes a reality The much-rumored replacement for Canon’s aging EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L has officially arrived. Announced in 1998, the original trombone-style lens is replaced by a traditional rotating zoom design and boasts a number of optical enhancements.  The lens itself is slightly taller, wider and heavier than the original, but the move to a rotating zoom design should resolve problems associated with dust being sucked in during operation. It also offers three image stabilization modes and offers 4 stops of stabilization compared to 1.5 in the previous model. Thew new...

Tiffen launches 10-stop ND range to prevent red-tinted long exposures

Tiffen launches 10-stop ND range to prevent red-tinted long exposures Tiffen has introduced a new range of neutral density filters that aim to allow stills photographers to shoot extreme long exposures without incurring the red color cast that is so common with ND filters. The XLE series comprises three 10-stop ND filters with differing infrared-cut characteristics, ranging from none in the XLE Axent, to moderate in the Advantix and complete IR suppression in the Apex. The series is designed to overcome a problem that occurs when photographers use high density filters to shoot long exposures during daylight hours. While ND filters block...

The series consists of three filter models, the X3 Traction Filter, X2 Traction Filter, and the X1 Black Filter, with a ridged design that aims to make them easier to attach to and detach from a lens. The X3 Traction Filter in particular is CNC machined from brass and features SCHOTT B270 glass from Germany. The X2 Traction Filter, meanwhile, is machined from...

Video: Capturing nature with the Canon EOS 7D Mark II

Enjoyable to watch, a well made video indeed. The introduction goes “When we review high end DSLRs,”. I would like to ask when DO you review high end DSLRs?The last full DSLR review was the Nikon D3300, which can hardly be called high end, which was published in April, seven months ago. The excellent Pentax K3 made it two for April but since then, nothing.I really enjoy the site but I have to say I think it’s failing to properly cover a whole branch of digital photography, which despite the obvious interest in mirrorless ILCs is still extremely relevant to a great deal of...

Jerry Ghionis On Capturing Striking Images with Any Light Source in Any Environment

Jerry Ghionis On Capturing Striking Images with Any Light Source in Any Environment Jerry Ghionis is a man who knows how to make the most of almost any environment. Whether he’s in a proper studio setup or is trying to make the most of one of his ‘MacGyvered’ setups, he always seems to find a way to nail the lighting and produce an extraordinary photograph. In the two-hour presentation above — a recording of one of his B&H classes — Ghionis covers almost every detail of his methodology for lighting images in tricky situations. The full presentation is a pretty long watch, but the amount of information covered makes it worth almost every minute. Whether it’s a...

Artist Nick Gentry Paints Realistic Portraits Onto Strips of Discarded 35mm Film

Artist Nick Gentry Paints Realistic Portraits Onto Strips of Discarded 35mm Film London-based artist Nick Gentry is known for using interesting materials to make his photographic work, and his newest series Synthetic Daydreams is no exception. For Synthetic Daydream, Gentry decided to paint realistic portraits on used, discarded film negatives. The medium is in keeping with Gentry’s continued commentary on the role technology plays in our lives — in the past he’s done similar projects using floppy disks and other ‘expired’ media — but the film, in our opinion, goes further than floppies can. Each frame itself contains an image, a moment in history that contributes...

Teens ‘Turning Their Backs on Digital’ and Flocking to Polaroid, says Impossible Project CEO

Teens ‘Turning Their Backs on Digital’ and Flocking to Polaroid, says Impossible Project CEO The Impossible Project CEO Creed O’Hanlon dropped quite the statement and statistic in an article on the resurgence of Polaroids by The Guardian. “Teens,” O’Hanlon said, “[are] turning their backs on digital for something more tangible.” A fact he says is backed up by explosive growth in their sales to the 18-25 year old demographic. How explosive? O’Hanlon tells The Guardian that, “[The Impossible Project] has seen a 75% increase in the 18-25 demographic” in the last 10 months, and doubled the volume of film sold/refurbished more than 30,000 classic Polaroid cameras in the last six…...

Pulitzer Winning Photographer David Turnley’s Advice to a Class of Photojournalism Students

Pulitzer Winning Photographer David Turnley’s Advice to a Class of Photojournalism Students I had a wonderful opportunity today in that I got to enjoy the company of Pulitzer Prize-winner photojournalist David Turnley in the setting of my very own classroom. He was very personable, very intelligent, and even made us all stand up and touch each other’s faces to make the point of what photojournalists, street photographers, and portrait photographers do: we create a more intimate viewpoint into someones life that we typically (and this especially true for us mid-westerners) don’t experience on a day-to-day basis. The portraits that we, as photographers, create of strangers,...

Stop Motion Video Captures the Metamorphosis of a Man Into His Drag Queen Persona

Stop Motion Video Captures the Metamorphosis of a Man Into His Drag Queen Persona The transformation of Drag Queens from their day-to-day selves to their fully costumed and made-up personas has been captured before. But where photographer Leland Bobbé captured before and after images that show the transformation from man to woman in a single frame, Erica Simone wanted to show the entire process — or metamorphosis, if you will. The resulting project is aptly titled Metamorphosis, and for part one she captured the stop-motion video above of Steven Rose — an Old Navy sales associate — transforming frame-by-frame into Detoxx Bustiáe. “The Metamorphosis project is about...

The Puzlook Case Attaches a Sliding Tile Puzzle of 5 Lenses Onto Your iPhone

The Puzlook Case Attaches a Sliding Tile Puzzle of 5 Lenses Onto Your iPhone This is… interesting. Attachable iPhone lenses and even lens-carousels are nothing new, but the puzlook case is a bit different. Unlike most of the options we’ve seen, the puzlook manages to pack 5 lenses onto your iPhone 5 or 5s using something like a sliding tile puzzle game as a mechanism. In all, the first puzlook case (which came out in January of this year) gives you a fisheye lens, a 160° wide angle, a 120° wide angle, a 1.5x telephoto, an 8x macro (40x when you add in the 5x digital zoom of the camera), a tripod mount, and an 8GB memory stick that doubles as a stand. The...

Product Photography with the Light Blaster, a $3,450 Cheaper Alternative to Broncolor’s Optical Spot

Product Photography with the Light Blaster, a $3,450 Cheaper Alternative to Broncolor’s Optical Spot We introduced you to the Light Blaster when it first came out in July of last year. A neat light modifier, it allowed you to use a lens and flash to project all sorts of patterns, slides and other non-digital backgrounds (or foregrounds) into your images. The creative possibilities are pretty vast, but if you want to see what happens when a professional studio photographer gets his hands on it and starts experimenting, Alex Koloskov of Photigy is more than happy to oblige. In the video above, Koloskov reviews the Light Blaster, introducing you to the device and then showing you how...

Intimate, Painterly Photographs of London Bus Passengers On Their Nighttime Commute

Intimate, Painterly Photographs of London Bus Passengers On Their Nighttime Commute Photographer Nick Turpin‘s series Through a Glass Darkly takes a different approach to candid street photography than we typically see. Turpin captures London bus commuters on their way home after a long day, and his photographs are at once artistically compelling and potentially controversial. Is this voyeurism? Is it street photography? The viewer (or at least this viewer) is torn between the two. The moments captured are at once public and intensely personal. Exhaustion is often the least of the emotions writ on many of the subjects’ faces; we see glimpses of hopes, dreams,...
