A Post By: James Maher Donut, American Apparel, NYC. Yes, someone thought this was a good idea. While it takes time to master the technical skills needed to excel at street photography, I think the most difficult aspect of the genre is trying to figure out what you are trying to capture. I get this question a lot, “What should I be looking for?” This is why street photography is a genre where experience is second to none. You can get comfortable capturing strangers candidly, you can learn to technically capture your images perfectly, but finding your voice is something that takes years of...

A Post By: Esther deBoer When I started out as a photographer, I had a lot of fun and luck with connecting with vendors to boost my business. Here are a few tips to help you start or boost your wedding photography business. No portfolio yet? Reach out to vendors in your area I was very active on Twitter when I just started out and noticed some rather under-lit and over-exposed pictures of beautiful cakes from a cake designer. I offered to create better images for her to make her website look better and to create a portfolio for me. She turned out to be very active on social media and in the...

anyone doing ultra-low light image capture know so as long light is available full spectrum, as is the case at night, know all the colors will show up beautifully like a bright blue sky sunny day, on better ultra-low light sensitive sensors (or longer exposures if less sensitive) e.g.moonlight landscape Earthbound scenery look as astoundingly beautiful as any daytime landscape shot, albeit with stars/auroras, included in the skies on a clear night. (the moon is basically a full sun spectrum reflector, at lower intensity, and daytime/sunny WB is the same) of course, under starlight alone, the...

“Will do” if you can get by with lackluster color rendition, limited dynamic range, bad S/R ratio and so on. I do, in a pinch, but when I can, I tend to avoid it… I like best Nos. 2, 16 & especially No. 9, that “smartphone glow” is kinda magical, and like the tension in the composition as well. The Study of Pose is an upcoming book by photographer Steven Sebring and supermodel Coco Rocha, who’s well known for her ability to “freestyle” various poses in rapid succession (some people call her the “Queen of Pose”). The book is packed with 1,000 different black-and-white poses by Rocha displayed on over 2,000 pages and serves as something of an encyclopedia of poses. The project actually goes beyond the poses printed on the pages of the hardcover book. Each pose was photographed in an experimental 360-degree rig. This allows each one to also be offered in an interactive...

The Fraenkel Gallery in San Francisco recently shared this interview with photographer Nicholas Nixon about his well known project The Brown Sisters. Since 1975, Nixon has been shooting a portrait of four sisters once a year, every year. This year saw the creation of the fortieth portrait in the series. Nixon started the project during a visit to his wife Bebe’s parents’ house. Bebe’s three sisters were also at the gathering, and Nixon came up with the idea of shooting a portrait of them out of sheer boredom. It became a family tradition, and the project now shows the passing of forty...

In the future, “Auto” may be an option for choosing between JPEG and RAW on Canon DSLRs. A recently published patent reveals that the company has tinkered with the idea of a feature that could automatically choose which photos to save in RAW and which ones to save as JPEG only. The patent, published in August 2014 and discovered by Egami, discusses a feature that would take effect when the photographer is shooting in burst mode and panning while tracking a subject. It would apparently allow the camera to evaluate the rapidly created shots for quality, saving the best ones — perhaps...

UK-based photographer Bertil Nilsson‘s project “Intersections” is a blend of two photographic subjects: urban landscapes and dance. Nilsson first sought out city spaces that have interesting architectural features. “There are lines, shapes, and textures to be uncovered with a camera,” he says. Once these spaces were located, Nilsson thought about how he could “repurpose them” by introducing the movement of a human figure. He collaborates with circus artists and dancers, so he had plenty of models to work with. His goal was to feature each dancer as a “living sculpture” of soft and...

While not all of our photographs end up being printed and framed, it helps to possess the knowledge of what it takes to properly hang them when they are. Here to help is this handy, not-so-little infographic that runs through a number of situations that you might come across when looking to adorn your wall with a photograph. From conventional drywall to the delicate tiles, the infographic, which was put together by Shutterfly, breaks down the tools required and the steps that need to be taken to get the job done. If you’re feeling extra saucy, you could always go meta and frame this...

A Post By: James Maher Whenever I teach, I get a lot of requests to review images. Over time, I’ve started to notice that a majority of the mistakes I see come from the same small group of errors that are repeated constantly, particularly by less experienced photographers. Please keep in mind that all of these common mistakes can also be advantages when done well and with purpose. This article is not about those times, but is an observation about how often I see them done the wrong way. As a photographer, you need to build the right foundation of skills before you can successfully veer away...

A Post By: Suzi Pratt Reducing noise in a digital photo is a hot topic, particularly for photographers who frequently shoot at high ISOs. Even if you’re not a typical low light shooter, the temptation may arise with some of the newer digital cameras that offer incredibly high ISO speeds which still produce pretty pleasing images, even with noise. There are many factors that can produce noise in your images, and there are many ways to reduce or sometimes even avoid noise all together. This article in particular will highlight one post-processing trick to reduce noise using a third party...

Hi Luben,First of all, as you must guess, I never claimed these images were the “best” of anything. That said, I’m pretty happy with them, more so since the location is limited in essence and I only spent 3 days there. As to your question, I personally like the inside much more than the outside, which is pretty dull and monotonous. I spent sunrise, midday and sunset in Kolmanskop on multiple occasions, and the main attraction, in my opinion, is the inside of the houses. The colors, the light let in through the doors and windows and the dunes are what makes this location so...

Nobody has any privacy if he or she can be seen through a window, anything and anyone visible from public can be photographed and there is no invasion of privacy, if you don’t want to be photographed then don’t get out of your home and don’t go near windows, it’s so simple, by being near the window you automatically consent to being photographed. Privacy is not useful anymore in the modern era in general, there is no need for privacy, for example everything I facebook is public and I never use the privacy settings, I can’t understand why some people are so...

While diving for a catch at the back of end zone during today’s game against Kansas State, Oklahoma wide receiver Sterling Shepard landed on something not-so-soft, but oh-so-very-expensive on the sideline: what looks to be a Canon 1DX attached to either a 400mm f/2.8L or a 500mm f/4L. Shepard, we’re happy to report, is okay. The lens… she’s gone. You can see the entire fall in this short Vine video by FanSide GIF, but be warned, this footage might disturb some viewers: Depending on the lens in question, and whether or not the 1DX survived the abuse, the repair/replacement could range...

When Geneva-based photographer Alex Teuscher found himself in New York City for 10 days this last April, he tried to capture some of the most iconic, tourist-packed locations on the globe from a new angle. It’s a testament to his skill as a photographer that he succeeded to such a great extent. The resulting shots have been compiled into a series he’s calling “New York City: Above as Below,” and consist of a mix of street (below) and architectural (above) photography that’s best described as ‘moody.’ He told us a bit about the series when we caught up with him over email this last...

If we asked you to name the ultimate fisheye lens, the comments would probably fill up with many gear suggestions. Some, like this rare Nikon 6mm lens that pops up for sale occasionally, would probably be named more than once, but there’s one suggestion you probably wouldn’t make: a floating sphere of water. That, however, is ISS astronaut Reid Wiseman‘s entry for the Ultimate Fisheye Lens. The vine videos below, uploaded about a week ago when Wiseman had some time to play around with the concept, show why: Wiseman’s been having a lot of fun on Vine since he uploaded the very first...

In its quest to continue resuscitating Flickr, Yahoo! has finally responded to popular demands and released its first official Flickr for iPad app — a release that coincides very well with Apple’s decision to make the iPad a more capable (if still embarrassing to use) camera. But regardless, the new app is meant to take advantage of all that sweet screen real estate with iPad specific layouts and browsing capabilities that are much more immersive than the app’s iPhone counterpart could possibly offer....

A Post By: Jim Hamel You are out photographing a landscape. You have a nice foreground and background in the frame, and you want as much as possible in focus. You set a small aperture to get a nice wide depth of field. But still, you know that not everything in your frame will be sharp. The fact is that lenses just cannot keep everything – from what is right in front of you all the way to the horizon – acceptably sharp at the same time. You can focus on something very close at the risk of blurring the background. Or you can focus on something far away and risk blurring your foreground...

British filter manufacturer Lee Filters has announced a new polarising filter that features a built-in warm-up effect that it says is aimed at landscape photographers. The 105mm Landscape Polariser has been designed with a shallow mount and with a 105mm diameter so that it will be useful for wide angle views, with the company suggesting it will be compatible with focal lengths as wide as 16mm on full frame SLRs. A spokesman for Lee told DP Review that the warm-up element of the Landscape Polariser is the equivalent to adding an 81A warm-up filter, so it will add an element of sunshine to...

There will be two of these #Selfiebration machines on display: one in in New York City’s Times Square on October 22nd, and the other in Los Angeles’ Hollywood & Highland Center on October 25th. During her time in Malaysia, roughly 3,500 miles away from her home in Iran, photographer Nafise Motlaq was troubled by the way people would talk about her country. Partially perpetuated by the media, she saw people making judgements without any first-hand knowledge of the country’s actual culture. It was this frustration with misrepresentation that, once she was home, inspired Motlaq to pick up her camera and begin an intimate series of photographs exploring the father-daughter relationship in Iran. Zahra’s father is a farm worker. “He works a lot. He works so much,” she said. As she...

Have you ever wondered what a multi-decade time-lapse of your living room would look like? Well, we don’t exactly have one to share with you, but what we do have is this clever advertisement from Dutch company Philips that tries to imagine what that might be like. In the video, Philips uses stop-motion to show how the living room has evolved, decade to decade, since the invention of the light bulb. The point they’re trying to make is that the living room has evolved, but the light bulb has not, and so this is actually a commercial for Philips’ Internet-connected lightbulb Hue. But it...

There are some things in this world that are impossible to photograph without the willingness to make a little sacrifice and step out of your comfort zone. Such was the case with photographer Philip Lee Harvey, who took it upon himself to photograph what is referred to by some as the ‘world’s most dangerous church.’ The church, which is dug into the side of a cliff, sits roughly 2,500 feet above the ground. To access it, you must scale a portion of the cliff, walk on numerous narrow bridges and finally hop skip and jump your way into the entrance. If you’re willing to take take the...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt Earlier today I rounded up a bunch of fun images of people and animals making big splashes. Kids love splashing in mud puddles, that’s a given. But what else makes a splash? Your dog jumping in the tub, an ice cube landing in a glass of water, your kids as they ride their bikes through the wet grass in the morning – all of these seemingly ordinary things could have potential to (pardon the really bad and intentionally pun) make a big splash! Weekly challenge – capture a splash If it’s raining, suit up, protect your camera, and get out there to make some splash...

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you will have noticed that the internet is a-flood with time-lapses and hyper-lapses made using Instagram’s new (inventively named) Hyperlapse. You’ve probably even played with it yourself – bellow is my attempt to use it on a canal trip around Amsterdam (sadly before I found out about the secret 1080p setting). Just 18 months ago, hyperlapse was so obscure the term didn’t even have a Wikipedia entry. Then, little more than one year after someone created the wiki, Hyperlapse racked up over 119k posts in its first week, and that’s just the...

Fotodiox has unveiled a new product that could instill much more confidence in Sony E-mount camera owners. It’s a full metal mounting ring called the “TOUGH E-Mount,” and it’s meant to replace the plastic/metal hybrid ring that comes standard on all E-mount cameras. While this may seem unnecessary, the component that holds your beloved glass onto the camera body is definitely not the part of your Sony you want failing. This is particularly relevant for Sony a7, a7R and a7S users who are slapping adapters and massive lenses onto their mirrorless full-frame cameras. Installation is easy....

Today Apple unveiled the iPad Air 2: a super-thin followup to its super-thin predecessor that packs quite a punch. But, beyond the new A8X chip, faster WiFi/Cellular and TouchID sensor, the most interesting upgrade was actually the camera, which had remained largely unchanged for a solid two years. The iPad Air 2 now features an 8MP backside illuminated sensor that takes pictures through a five-element lens and hybrid IR filter. The f/2.4 aperture is the same as its predecessor, but thanks to a beefier graphics card, the iPad is now capable of burst mode in addition to HDR and panorama...

Want to see what a 5K image looks like? Here’s a sample photo that can fit entirely on the new iMac. The new screen dwarfs the resolution of 4K displays, featuring 67% more pixels. The new iMac still has a super thin 5mm profile and now uses 30% less energy than its...

A Post By: Beryl Young Her eyes were like saucers as joy filled them wide. You could already sense the smile that was about to land upon her face. She was becoming a photographer like mommy. It was always my intention to pass along my old point-and-shoot camera to my daughter, but it wasn’t until she turned four years old that I found her asking to take pictures more and more and I felt like she was ready to inherit this gift. As a mom perhaps you’ve found the camera to be an amazing source of discovering passion and purpose through documenting memories of your family. Photography is a hobby...

A Post By: Andrew S. Gibson After I had written my article about juxtaposition and contrast I realized that one of the photos also perfectly illustrated the concept of rhythm in composition. Here it is (I’ve added arrows to show you the way the eye moves through the photo). The rhythm comes from the way the eye moves from the first tower to the second, then on to the statue. These three focal points are linked by colour (they are a similar shade of brown) and shape (they are all narrow shapes emerging from the bottom of the frame). The combination of shape and colour pull the eye, creating a...

After unveiling its new iPhone models last month, Apple announced two new tablets today – the iPad Air 2 and the iPad mini 3. The Air 2 comes with a new thinner body that measures only 6.1mm. In addition to the Silver models there is now a new Gold color option. Under the hood, the new Apple A8X chipset boasts more transistors than its A7 predecessor and Apple claims that it is therefore 40% faster at the CPU level. The new tablet also gains the TouchID fingerprint sensor we have already seen used in the iPhone 5S, 6 and 6 Plus, which allows for secure unlocking of the device...

“It is my understanding that “non-destructive edits” are the result of using RAW images rather than JPEGs”. Nope. Non-destructive edits is basically where you can undo your edits and revert back to the original. You can edit RAWs destructively. You can edit JPEGs non-destructively. It’s just a philosophy of editing, and nothing to do with file format. But yes, Lightroom is built around non-destructive editing, as others have mentioned. Source Article from...

Jay, you would be surprised… Here in Brazil (and also, I guess a lot of countries that are not so technological advanced), people are rarely aware of the existence of the GH line. Small, low budget video guys continue to use Canon Rebels and 60Ds, with their ultra mushy “1080p” (more like 500p…), believing Canon is the way to go for professionals. I have an old GH2, and tried to convince all my fellow buddies about its video capabilities without any success. They simply fail to see how a little toy can be any better than their ultra professional Rebels and 60Ds…...

A Post By: Harry Fisch Blurring is a Tool, Not a Gimmick Adding blur or movement to a photo just for the sake of it is the same as a magic trick; razzle-dazzle but without purpose. Using a blur effect makes sense when you actually wants to say something specific with the photo. Sometimes it’s to create a sense of speed, and sometimes it’s to add an ethereal, soft kind of ambiance to the shot, but it’s not something to use just because. Know What You Want to Convey Although it’s true that sometimes a random or accidental shot yields good fruit, more often than not, there is a better chance of...

A Post By: Alex Morrison With the huge assortment of software and plugins you have at your disposal these days, the photo processing technique of burning and dodging is practically ancient. It was (and still is) one of the most common ways of enhancing film images in the darkroom, and everyone from Ansel Adams to Imogen Cunningham used it. They used it because it is powerful and simple and still is to this day. With all the complicated plugins and post-processing procedures you have at your disposal, you won’t get any better bang for the buck than creative dodging and burning. This tutorial...

Google has launched the Nexus 6, its latest showcase phone that comes with a brand new version of Android, 5.0 “Lollipop”, and an interesting-looking camera specification. Nexus devices are usually designed and made by Google in cooperation with a hardware manufacturer. After previous Nexus phones from HTC, Samsung and LG, this time it’s Motorola’s turn. In light of this, it’s no surprise that the Nexus 6 looks very much like an enlarged version of the recently announced new Moto X, with the same metal frame, curvy design and dimple on the back. Iconosquare (free) Sharing your photography on social media is a fun way to interact with friends, fellow photography enthusiasts and fans of your work. A Post By: James Maher Dior, 5th Avenue, NYC A common misconception about street photography is that it is that it is about capturing any person that looks slightly interesting walking down the street in front of an interesting background. It’s actually about trying to capture a story, idea, or emotion through an image. While this largely can take place on the street, it can be captured anywhere. What comes to mind when you see the term street photography? Is it a person walking down the street? Whether or not you you have practiced street photography, I am assuming that you have come across...

Gear used for this review and tests – Canon 7D and a Manfrotto 190 tripod. There is no denying that any lens capable of shooting in a wide range of conditions will always be in high demand and very popular. So called “all-in-one lenses” are most definitely a great way to be flexible in more situations without lugging around a lot of gear. One of Tamron’s latest additions to this category is the...

… and one more thing. We found a very interesting behavior where sometimes sharpness would oscillate with aperture. In other words, f/1.8 sharp, f/2 a bit sharper, then f/2.8 is less sharp, then f/4 is sharper, then f/5.6 is less sharp, etc. And this would change from copy to copy, and would vary based on if you’re looking at the center vs. the corners. I think with these complex lens designs, with such demanding resolution sensors (the pixel pitch on the RX100 is quite small), one starts to see odd behavior that challenges things we would’ve taken for granted in the past...

DJI Phantom 2 Vision+$1,159 / £919 www.dji.com The first known aerial photograph was taken in 1858 by French photographer and balloonist, Gaspar Felix Tournachon. It was a view of the French village of Petit-Becetre, captured from a tethered hot-air balloon, 262 ft. (80 meters) above the ground. Over time, aerial photography evolved via airships, planes, helicopters, and other iterations of flying machines. However, all of the aforementioned methods of elevated flight have one main thing in common: they require pilots and passengers. Taking into account that they are expensive to operate and...

A Post By: Karthika Gupta You would probably love to have ideal lighting conditions for every shoot, especially if you are strictly an outdoor, natural light photographer. However there are many situations when the lighting is not ideal. Think winter, rain or even harsh midday sun. Sometimes you are stuck indoors, or your client wants to have a photoshoot inside their home. When used correctly, natural light indoors can be just as pleasing as outdoor lighting and can also provide opportunity for some creative portraiture with contrast, shadows, and drama. Here are some tips to get the most...

A Post By: Barry J Brady A somewhat abstract seascape scene, the movement of the water makes the image dramatic Seascapes are often seen as a subset of landscape photography. This is true, but I feel that seascapes have their own specific techniques that need to be thought about when you are shooting a scene. The typical sea scene could be a warm sandy beach, blue sky and some palm trees. That is generally the kind of image I try and avoid. For something more dramatic, you may want to try to shoot at sunset and try and capture something unique, rather than a typical postcard shot. When you...

Lens manufacturer Sigma has issued an update to the firmware of its USB dock to make it compatible with the new 150-600mm f/5.6-6.3 DG OS HSM S and 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3DC Macro OS HSM lenses. Although these lenses are available in Sigma, Canon and Nikon mounts, the update for the USB dock does not yet cover these lenses in the Nikon fit, and Sigma hasn’t indicated when it will. The USB dock itself was originally only available for Sigma and Canon fit lenses, with Nikon catching up later, and this may be the case again – that the Nikon update will come soon. Sigma’s USB dock is...

PhotoShelter, a site that provides photographers with tools for their websites, has introduced a new project it has been working on called Lattice, which allows the service’s users to browse collections of images that have been aggregated into boards. The way the new service works is similar to Pinterest and will be rolling out in phases, the first of which is now available to the public. The goal behind Lattice is to offer a new method for showcasing and discovering images from professional photographers. In this first phase, invitations are being sent out to individuals who will be...

A Post By: Sarah Hipwell I’m always amazed when I take professional head shots how every photo shoot presents different challenges. That’s the beauty, and sometimes frustrating part of being a photographer. No shoot is the same. When you have a model as the subject in front of your lens, being able to nail that shot will be a lot easier. What do I mean by easier? Models know how to pose and appear more relaxed in front of the camera than others. Straight away, you can concentrate on taking photos with little or minimal direction of your model. Each photographer has their own unique style and...

A Post By: Helen Bradley Sharpening in Photoshop has traditionally involved a compromise between applying it to the places in the image that you want to sharpen and avoiding those that you don’t want affected. Both Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw have always had a much better sharpening tool which not only lets you see what you are doing more clearly, but also includes a very smart mask that lets you limit sharpening to detail areas. In Photoshop Creative Cloud a Camera Raw filter was added. This opens up a world of possibilities for sharpening images better and more easily and at the...

A Post By: Jorge Hassan If you post amazing professional-quality photographs to your website and nobody can access them, are they really that amazing? Nobody will know. All that hard work, focus, determination, and artistic ability -POOF – all for nothing. This is exactly what is happening to many very talented photographers. They pour their heart and soul into their art form and then entrust it to outdated technology that doesn’t adequately display their work on mobile devices. How important is being mobile friendly? With the proliferation of mobile devices, it’s no surprise that many...

You probably didn’t notice one thing: age category 11-14 years. Considering the void separating serious amateurs and professional photographers of any age and specialization from the rest of those (of any age) who just have cameras and don’t even dare to peek in the direction of camera manual and techniques more advanced than point&shoot, I doubt the judge board had the choice broad enough to choose other picture as a winner. I speak from experience here. You just try to explain the concept of shutter speed + aperture + white balance (not to mention things like focal...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt Early I shared an assortment of shadowy images. I love playing with light and photographing shadows is a great way to help you learn to see light, and direction of light. Here are a few more examples: By mgstanton By Life Pilgrim By Daniela Hartmann This week’s photography challenge is all about the shadows. So head out and look for some light that creates interesting shadows. For a shadow image to work well you need a couple of things: A hard light course like direct sun. You cannot find good shadows on an overcast or cloudy day. Light that skims the surface...

A Post By: Bruce Wunderlich “Red Sky” Summer sunset over Marietta, Ohio One question every child asks is, “Why is the sky blue?” But let’s look at why is the sky red at Sunset. Light from the sun is made up of all the colors in the rainbow. As the sunlight enters the earth’s atmosphere, the short wave length of blue light is scattered in all directions, more than any of the other colors, causing the sky to be blue during the day. At sunrise and sunset, the light has farther to travel due to the low angle of the sun in the sky. This causes the blue light to be blocked and scattered away,...

A Post By: James Maher How many times have you had this interaction? “This photo is beautiful!” “Thanks!” End of conversation. There’s nothing wrong with this, of course. Beautiful is a great, great compliment. However, if you’ve ever wanted to have a longer conversation with a viewer about one of your photographs, then creating images with stories behind them, or around your own personal stories, can be a very important approach to try. My favorite photography tip has always been that you should photograph what you know and what you are most interested in. This passion and knowledge will...

Cinamatic, Hipstamatic’s iOS app for capturing short video clips, has been updated to implement manual control over focus, exposure, white balance, shutter speed, and ISO. This has been made possible by changes to the camera API in the latest version of Apple’s mobile operating system, iOS 8. After the launch of the new OS manual control had been implemented in several still photography apps very quickly but Cinamatic is now the first video app to come with the additional controls. Apart from bug fixes and general performance improvements other new features in version 1.5...

Smartphone maker HTC has introduced its first stand-alone camera in the shape of the HTC RE. With no viewfinder, screen or controls other than a shutter release button, the RE is designed to be used either as an independent still and video camera, or as a connected device controlled via a smartphone. Housing a 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor that features 16 million pixels, the RE uses a fixed-focus f/2.8 lens that HTC says has a 146 degree angle of view – equivalent to a 6.5mm focal length on a full frame body. The camera comes to life when it senses it is being picked up, and the shutter release...
