Add to that WiFi, an articulated screen, small & lightweight body, and you have quite the FF body. Oh, and let’s not forget focusing down to EV -3 (for all AF points), which puts it ahead of most, if not all, other DSLRs in this regard. The A7S does focus in lower light, but b/c it is CDAF which already tends to be slower than PDAF, and b/c focusing slows down in low light, the reality is that focusing on moving subjects in such low light proves rather difficult for the A7S (and many others, really). The top downsides that come to mind are that the buffer fills up very quickly, and...

Why Prime Lenses are Better Than Zooms

Why Prime Lenses are Better Than Zooms A Post By: James Maher 35mm – SoHo Fire Escapes, NYC How heavy is your camera? If you have an SLR with a zoom lens attached, the answer is pretty damn heavy. A large SLR body, such as a Canon or Nikon with a 24-105mm lens attached feels like a tank; forget the 70-200mm. Of course there are many situations when using a zoom lens is ideal. However, I’m hoping to try and convince you to ditch the zoom lens for a prime. But what if I need the zoom? What if I don’t have the perfect focal length? – I have heard those questions more times than I can count. A wise photographer once told me that you...

How to Photograph Lightning – the Ultimate Guide

How to Photograph Lightning – the Ultimate Guide A Post By: Mike Olbinski If someone told me I could only take pictures of one thing for the rest of my life – I’d think about it for awhile, and then choose lightning. Luckily I live in reality and no one will ever say that to me, but it does speak to how passionate I am about photographing this stuff. I’m a storm chaser at heart, so I love everything about weather. It would be difficult if I couldn’t also capture awesome dust storms, supercells, flash floods and whatever else might happen out there. But lightning – I love lightning. “MountainSide” – Buckeye, Arizona – 50mm, ISO 100, f/8.0,...

Taking out the Garbage – 7 Tips for Choosing Your Best Photos Fast

Taking out the Garbage – 7 Tips for Choosing Your Best Photos Fast A Post By: Melinda Smith One of the most time-consuming and difficult things in photography is going through all the unedited images you took and choosing your best photos, the ones to keep, and which images to pass by. When I first started out as a photographer, I’d get hung up on this every time. I’d spend way too much time agonizing over every photo, and worrying so much about throwing away a good one. If this sounds like you, then read on, maybe I can save you a lot of time and headaches with a few simple tips! #1 Don’t take so many in the first place When you take hundreds of images at...

5 Tips for Newbie Landscape Photographers

5 Tips for Newbie Landscape Photographers A Post By: Barry J Brady It doesn’t matter if you are a seasoned photographer or a beginner, most photographers want to learn how to make great landscape images. Once you have shot a few hundred sunset shots and a few sunrise shots, you may think you know how it’s done. Then you get out into the wild on a crisp early morning, before sunrise, and try and get some dramatic mountain scene or amazing seascape. Suddenly it’s not that easy. Landscape photography requires more than simply setting up and waiting for the shot. Sometimes you have to go back to a scene four or five times to get the...

Daily Photography Pros and Cons: is it for You?

Daily Photography Pros and Cons: is it for You? A Post By: Katie McEnaney All photographers have room to grow, and we all of commit to honoring that growth in different ways. One way to dedicate yourself to your photography is to commit to doing it daily. It does not matter whether your camera is a phone, a compact camera, or a top-of-the-line DSLR. Daily photography simply means picking up your camera and using it every day. You could commit to a specific plan or subject, or keep it more open. You might share your daily photographs on a blog or with a 365 project group, or keep them private. The focus is on pushing yourself to use your...

UPDATED: Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX100 real-world samples gallery posted

Hi again, Please don’t any of you get me wrong, I’ve been an user and admirer of Panasonic cameras and I’ll be happy to see new releases from them succeed, no fanboyism here at all. But the quality of this particular image is, as I said, abysmal. It’s not that the focus is too near the foreground, actually this image lacks any amount of sharpness everywhere, in the foreground, in the background, in the center, in the corners. There’s nothing even remotely sharp here, not the trees, not the leaves in the grass, not the grass itself. If this is what $900 or €900...

Tips For Great Indoor Portraits Using Natural Light

Tips For Great Indoor Portraits Using Natural Light A Post By: Melinda Smith You don’t have to have an amazing dedicated photography studio to get great shots indoors. A Collection of Stunning Photos of Birds

A Collection of Stunning Photos of Birds A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt Birds are a tricky subject to photograph. They move to fast and erratically, getting sharp images of them in flight is a challenge. But the large birds so majestic looking, and the tiny ones so delicate even shots of them in a flock or sitting still can be great. So let’s have a look at some photographers that are doing it right, and some stunning photos of birds in this week’s image collection. Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX100 real-world samples gallery posted

My first impression looking at individual images was that corner sharpness at 10.9mm is really not that great. However, considering the entire gallery, I have to admire the variety of pictures that can be achieved with a compact camera; crisp outdoor shots, pretty clean high ISO, great macros (in this case ruined by the 10,000 iso but the potential is clear), and very usable portraits. Keeping in mind that this is a relatively cheap, pocketable camera with just one lens, I think the results are impressive. By no means perfect, but simply something that no other single-lens camera is...

Post-Photokina polls – Tell us what you think

Maybe I am just being a smartass… But: As long as you give the last answer as an option, it overshadows all other options a bit: As long as it is hypothetical, almost everyone is, first and foremost, after good pictures. Provided there is a really, really good 1″ sensor with really, really good, bright lenses that give you the same sharpness, plasticity, dof control and low-light capabilities as a full-frame camera, I obviously prefer the smaller camera. Translating this to the real world: I am very happy with the direction the camera market is taking: small size &...

LensRentals’ new Keeper program lets you buy rental gear

LensRentals’ new Keeper program lets you buy rental gear U.S.-based LensRentals has announced an expansion to its photo equipment rental service that allows photographers to purchase the gear they’ve borrowed. This gives renters a try-before-you-buy option and lets those who have become enamored with their rental equipment keep it forever. The Keeper program was detailed yesterday by LensRentals, which says any eligible item will include a starting purchase price that is based on how old the item is. A credit that takes into account how long an item has been rented is applied to that price, resulting in the final figure...

Adobe announces Camera Raw 8.7 and DNG Converter 8.7 release candidates

So no Samsung NX1, or Panasonic LX100, or Canon G7X–all kind of interesting cameras–and IR has already posted some raws from the Canon. 5 Beginner Tips for Photographing Animals in the Wild

5 Beginner Tips for Photographing Animals in the Wild A Post By: Ry Sangalang As I traveled through Africa, I learned many things about photographing animals while on safari. At first I knew absolutely nothing about it, but then with time and experience shooting in different conditions, I noticed certain factors that helped improve my photos. If you’re new to photographing animals, here are fire tips for photographing animals in the wild. 1 – Use a zoom lens Many wild animals stay away from people. As soon as they notice you, they might immediately run off. This is truer with birds that tend to fly away if you get too close. The larger animals...

Camera51 for Android guides your photo composition

I am a photographer. I am proud of what I do, such as shooting at 6400 ISO a young band on a dirty passage, playing with garbages, for a grainy rough results. They loved it, we will have another shoot, black & white too next week, while they jam. This will be fun! I don’t need camera51, but on the other side, I am happy that an application is giving good advices to anyone, such as “don’t use the flash”, or focus on that point to have a good composition from start. I am happy, because these pictures does matter. The one that everyone do on their kids, family,...

Under the proposed restrictions, any...

Opinion: Why buy a Panasonic LX100 when you could buy a GX7? The Panasonic Lumix GX7 (left) and Lumix LX100 side-by-side. They offer same sized Four Thirds sensors, but the LX100’s lens is fixed where the GX7’s is interchangeable.  It was fine once upon a time for the compact camera department to ignore and be ignored by the department that made interchangeable lens system cameras. The difference between the two types of cameras was so great and the target market usually so different that there was very little chance of one stepping on the toes of the other. There would be times, inevitably, when one would produce a...

Ready to Upgrade Your Kit Lens? Tips for Which Lens to Invest in Next

Ready to Upgrade Your Kit Lens? Tips for Which Lens to Invest in Next A Post By: Simon Ringsmuth Most cameras come with a kit lens that generally works well as a decent all-around workhorse. A common focal range for these lenses is 18-55mm, which means they are capable of wide-angle shots as well as medium-telephoto pictures, and everything in between. The tradeoff for this zoom range, however, is a limited maximum aperture range of roughly f/3.5 when zoomed out (18mm), and f/5.6 when zoomed in to 55mm. Of course some kit lenses cover a longer focal range and have different maximum apertures, but overall most kit lenses are designed for the types of all-around...

3 Ways to Combat Photography Boredom

3 Ways to Combat Photography Boredom A Post By: Andrea Minoia Boredom is one of the most powerful and inescapable forces on this world and photography is not immune to it. A bored photographer will likely stop to photograph or start producing boring images, which in turns will bore the viewer or client, who will likely stop following or buying the photographer’s boring work. Fighting boredom is, therefore, an absolute priority. When you specialize in a certain kind of photography, after a while you will probably master it. You will know what lens and settings best suit the scene you have in front of you, to get this or that...

DynaOptics wants to bring zoom lenses to smartphones

DynaOptics wants to bring zoom lenses to smartphones Camera modules in smartphones have rapidly improved over the past few years. Thanks to advances in sensor technology, optical image stabilization systems, faster apertures and clever software algorithms, smartphone image quality can rival and in some instances even surpass consumer level compact cameras. However, when shooting scenes that require a longer focal length, for example sports or wildlife, the lack of optical zoom on smartphone cameras becomes a real limitation. There is simply no space for zoom lenses in today’s super-thin smartphone bodies. While most models offer a...

7 Tips for Interacting with People to Create Better Portraits

7 Tips for Interacting with People to Create Better Portraits A Post By: William Petruzzo Interaction is the basis of a portrait session, in every single way. In the most obvious ways, for example, you must interact with the client to set up the session, during the session, and when the images are done. The portrait session is also an interaction with self, both for you the photographer and for your subject. You the photographer, who is creating with integrity, must meet with yourself inside to bring about bold creativity. The subject, likewise, is faced with many insecurities that they may have very little experience with in their day to day lives....

More manual control on iOS with Manual Cam

More manual control on iOS with Manual Cam From a mobile photography perspective, developer access to camera exposure and focus settings was arguably the most important new addition in Apple’s latest mobile operating system version, iOS 8. The move has caused some hectic activity among developers, and some of the most popular third party camera apps, such as ProCamera or Camera+, were swiftly updated after the iOS 8 launch to make use of the newly gained controls. Not only were existing apps updated, the changes to the operating system have also made possible the introduction of a few brand new camera apps. Last week we...

Canon EOS 7D Mark II: Real-world samples (beta)

Without wanting to sound like a dickhead (that may be a first, it’s true 🙂 ) – it must be very difficult to please everyone with sample pictures, but these really, really don’t do anything for the camera, in terms of expectations, because, frankly, the IQ is quite horrendous on most of these (at least to my ancient geriatric eyes). They don’t show anything of the new focusing system, which is, apparently, virtually the raison d’etre of this action/wildlife focused camera. My 3 year old NEX-5N takes nicer pictures SOOC than these. Even my old 5D (which...

How to Soften the Light When Using Flash

How to Soften the Light When Using Flash A Post By: Shiv Verma Why do flash images look harsh? Recently, a number of dPS readers have asked the question on Facebook, “How do I use a flash and not have my images look so harsh?”. Let us first understand the difference in using natural or ambient light and using a flash. With natural light you have little control over intensity, direction, or color. With a flash, you have a lot more control if you can grasp the fundamentals of light and exposure. Using a flash you can control the direction, intensity, color and distribution of the light. Introduction After first venturing into the hardware business with Kindle ebook-readers and Fire tablets, the Fire Phone is Amazon’s first foray into smartphones. A Quiet Collapse: Christopher Nunn’s ‘Falling Into the Day’

Well aren’t you quite the armchair critic? The gallery is about a “look into David Blackburn’s daily life and surroundings as he struggles with the disease”. About his *daily life and surroundings*. The centrepiece of the series is *not* Alzheimer’s disease, it is the life and surroundings of the subject. For me, the photos portray feelings of vacancy, yearning, and forgotten memories. I think that it’s an great series of photographs. Source Article from...

A 10 Minute Lesson to Photographing Images with More Pizzazz

A 10 Minute Lesson to Photographing Images with More Pizzazz A Post By: Annie Tao Even the most seasoned photographer wants to continue to stretch their creativity. I know I do! One simple activity you can do in your spare time is to find new ways to photograph everyday, plain things. Yup, the things you see or use every day; no models, no glamorous set-ups, no breathtaking locations. You don’t even need to do this with a fancy DSLR camera or have a significant amount of time. The lesson you learn can be achieved in 10 minutes once a week, using a $100 camera or a smart phone. Your goal is to make something very plain look more interesting through...

Create Beautiful Portraits with CameraBag 2 Software

Create Beautiful Portraits with CameraBag 2 Software A Post By: Andrew S. Gibson Do you use Lightroom for processing portraits but get frustrated by its limitations? One way around this is to use a plug-in or buy some Develop Presets. But these can be expensive, so you may be interested in a cheaper alternative. One of my favourites is Nerve Center’s CameraBag 2. It’s a bargain at just $20, and while it’s not as convenient to use as a plug-in that you can access directly from Lightroom, it is easy to incorporate into your workflow. Let me give you a couple of examples. Here’s the first; I selected it because there’s a dramatic difference...

Photokina 2014: Quiet but significant

Photokina 2014: Quiet but significant Last week’s Photokina was my fourth, which must mean I’ve been working in the photo publishing industry for… about eight years. It doesn’t seem like that long to me, but regardless, a lot has happened in that time.  Since 2008 the photo industry has weathered a global economic downturn, multiple destructive weather events in Asia and the emergence of an entirely new family of products – the smartphone. All of these things would have been disruptive on their own, but coming hot on the heels of one another inside less than a decade, their cumulative effect has...

4 Ways to Add a Sense of Motion to Your Urban Photography

4 Ways to Add a Sense of Motion to Your Urban Photography A Post By: Jim Hamel It is great to walk around a new city, or a new part of a familiar city, and just explore. You never know what will be on the next block or around the next corner. When you bring your camera along with you, you can often capture a few nice skyline photos, some interesting pictures of buildings, and perhaps some street photos of people going about their daily life. But you know what is often missing from these photos? A sense of movement, and that’s what cities are all about. Cities are not just collections of buildings. They are dynamic environments full of hustle and...

Olympus Capture software now available for E-M1 owners

Olympus Capture software now available for E-M1 owners Today Olympus announced the release of its Olympus Capture software, which is designed to bring tethering to owners of the OM-D E-M1. The software, along with the new E-M1 firmware 2.0, was announced last week at Photokina, but today photographers can finally take advantage of the new feature set. Olympus Capture works by tethering your E-M1 camera to your PC or Mac via a compatible USB 2.0 cable. Once tethered, users can choose to control their camera from the body itself or from a computer with the software installed; it is important to note that the latest firmware 2.0 is required. The...

‘Manual’ app brings manual camera settings to iOS8 devices

‘Manual’ app brings manual camera settings to iOS8 devices With the latest version of its mobile operating system, iOS 8, Apple has introduced a number of new imaging related features. One of the most interesting additions is the ability to fully control camera settings such as focus, shutter speed or ISO via the CameraKit SDK that is used in the development of iOS camera apps. Some of the more established camera apps have already implemented the new functionality into the latest updates, for example ProCamera.  However, there is also a brand new app, aptly called Manual, that not only makes use of the manual controls offered by iOS 8 but...
