A Post By: Scott Wyden Kivowitz When it comes to mobile triggers or cable releases photographers often have multiple responses: I got the knock-off brand and it doesn’t work when I need it I got the basic button kind and have to count the time on my own The intervalometer is way too expensive I could save money and build a DIY release but that’s too much effort Image from Triggertrap site Image from the Triggertrap website. I hear comments like that on almost a daily basis. In my previous article on long exposure photography accessories I mentioned Triggertrap and Trigger Happy. In this...

A Post By: Valerie Jardin Let’s face it, photographers are a breed of their own. Street photographers may belong to an even more extreme category… so here are eight things you should know if you are dating a street photographer: #1 You cannot walk where you want on your own No matter which side of the street your favorite shops or restaurants are, you will be required to walk on the side that offers the best dappled light, long shadows, reflections, backdrops, etc. You may also occasionally be used as a decoy to approach a situation inconspicuously. Date night often means going downtown and...

Uh, the Sony A77 mark II isn’t exactly the 7D mk II you know. It barely qualified as a refresh. RX100, RX10, RX1, A7, A7R etc etc have all been extensively taken up on by dpreview. Tinfoil hat much? @CFynn, > You said ” No mirror slap and the leaf shutter will have less vibration than a DSLR’s focal plane shutter.” < Never head that MODERN DSLRs has this issue. Also, High-end P&S can turn off OIS automatically if there is no movement being detected, the LX7 will turn off OIS automatically...

A Post By: Meredith Clark When it comes to portrait photography, one of the simplest and easiest things you can do to improve your images coming straight out of the camera, is using a reflector. There are many different sizes and shapes of reflectors, and the type of photography that you do most often will often dictate which size and shape you should purchase. For example, if you like to practice street or travel photography, it may be most beneficial to consider a round reflector that’s about 20″ wide so that you can hold it with one hand, and shoot with the other, without being intrusive...

If you’re one of those types, I’m here to tell you that you’re missing out on a delicious second hit of creative joy. 1 – Don’t Miss Out – Post-Processing is Half the Fun Unprocessed version below. Total processing time = five minutes. Steps taken: Boosted blacks and shadows Reduced whites Increased exposure by +1 Increased clarity Increase contrast Subtle noise...

An 8MP, fixed focal length, barely-any-flash camera. I use my iPhone camera plenty, and I’m glad phones are getting better cameras, but even the best smartphone camera barely warrants a “meh” to sum up how good they are.I hope Canon, Nikon, Sony, Panasonic, Olympus, etc. will one day have really smooth wifi pairing along with stellar apps to go with all of their cameras (on-board apps as well as phone apps). Making the phone a remote control for a real camera is a great selling point, as well as instant uploading from either the phone or camera. The G7 X used remotely gives...

A Post By: Adam Welch If you have an interest in wildlife or nature photography there is a good chance you have seen an image at some point that has completely taken your breath away. Maybe it was a photograph of a sweeping landscape washed in the golden light of the dying afternoon sun or close-up of some small natural miracle that you had never noticed before that moment. You might even have asked yourself, “How did they do that?” Well, the majority of those incredible photographs came about through a good deal of physical hardship, practiced patience, and a healthy amount of self-made...

A Post By: Daniel Korzeniewski As a travel photographer, either on assignment or shooting a personal project, capturing great quality images that represent the spirit of a place and its people is key. Looking to achieve that was a priority for me, so I always traveled with a bag full of gear, including at least two DSLR bodies, three or four lenses, flash, tripod, batteries, etc. It was a heavy load, and it slowed me down. I am a Nikon shooter, so my first approach to unload weight was to carry an all-purpose lens. I got the Nikon 28-300mm, and along with this, I’d carry the 14-24mm for...

Yes, I sure don’t like it, and tact aside, it’s the truth. We do enough “sugar coating” things, I find bluntness refreshing sometimes. In other words–look, I get that advertisers pay the bills, but I’m tired of their interests always being catered to almost exclusively, almost to the point of cow-towing, and then we readers, who are the ultimate targets I would imagine (else we’d be seeing ads for tampons and football jerseys), are told “pay or zip it.” It’s an awful format and the most excellent format for reading should be the...

I don’t own a Leica. I never will. In the 1970’s, there were many ordinary film cameras, nothing special – not ever SLR’s , with the chromed brass finish – cheap cameras like the Olympus Pen, Canon QL, Minolta HiMatic, Yashica, etc. You find them at garage sales for a few dollars and with a clean up they look new. These were also products for the everyday man, not for the elite, like Leica. So did brass suddenly become only for the super rich? The cameras I refer to were easily affordable to Joe Public. They were mass produced. If you are in this modern age...

A Post By: Bruce Wunderlich No matter what the season, people love to congregate in special places to celebrate or commemorate special events. Here are some tips that may help you take maximum advantage of the opportunities that festivals and historical reenactments present. #1 Research the event before you go Do some homework before you attend the event, to get an idea of the subject of the celebration, and something of its history. For example, if you are attending a battle reenactment, a little research before you arrive may give you an inside advantage as to how the battle may unfold in...

The Sony Xperia Z3 is Sony’s latest waterproof flagship smartphone, picking up where the Z2 left off. Like that phone it’s 4K capable and also offers an atypically-large 1/2.3″-type sensor. Just like the Z2, that’s a 20.7MP Exmor RS stacked CMOS sensor nestling behind a 27mm equivalent F2.0 lens. All this has encouraged Sony to offer ISO 12,800, which it says is the highest of any smartphone. A Post By: Nick Fancher Several years ago I had a studio for about six months. It was really nice to have a space that I knew was always there, waiting for me to shoot in, should the need arise. The problem was that most of my shoots took place outdoors or on location, and when my trial lease period was over, I couldn’t rationalize staying on at the monthly rental rate. What didn’t occur to me at the time was that I had a perfectly good, albeit small, basement at my disposal. Due to the low, 80″ (6.6 foot) ceiling, the narrow, 10’x20′ shooting area, and the generally dark ambience of an...

I really want to love the LX100. I really do. I’m totally fine with the styling, size, sensor, lens and control interface. What’s more, I have the cash in hand and can actually afford it. But the lack of an integrated flash drives me crazy. The whole idea of the LX100, at least for me, is the have a reasonably sized, grab-and-go all-rounder for daily use. By definition, I don’t want to bring along extra bits – whether lenses or flashes. I’m only asking for something good enough for fill and reasonably close snapshots. It doesn’t even have to be a pop-up...

One swallow does not a summer make said Aristotle, suggesting the dangers of looking for trends based on single examples. Even with this in mind, I’m pleased to see two manufacturers introduce 70-200mm equivalent zooms for APS-C cameras at this year’s Photokina. First Fujifilm introduced its XF 50-140mm F2.8 R LM OIS WR, and then Samsung followed suit with its 50-150mm F2.8 S. This can only be a good thing, since I’d argue they make more sense for many photographers than actual 70-200mm lenses do. Let me explain why: Easy as APS-C APS-C has been the de...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt Earlier today I shared a collection of sports images. Now as usual it’s time for the challenge. I throw down the gauntlet and urge you to accept it and play along (pun intended). Sports photography is a tricky subject. Fast moving subjects, quickly changing lighting conditions, and restrictions on where you are allowed to stand. All these things can be overcome and conquered – with practice! Now is the perfect time to get out and do just that. Try out your high speed shooting mode, or borrow a lens. Find a local sporting event and get out and take some action...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt The part of the world where I live, we’re already starting to feel the changing season coming. Here that means summer is giving way to fall and cooler temperatures. Maybe you’ll be inspired to go shoot some action or sports while the weather lasts. Ready? Go! Cont’d. Samsung, compared to Japanese companies, is a different bag of cats. Samsung is known to mercilessly kill off the units which are not profitable. If NX would fail to gain desired market share, Sammy would kill it. (There were dates named, but I can’t recall them.) All in all, the only large companies which are somewhat stable right now (and have stake in the camera market) are Canon, Ricoh and Panasonic. (But Canon is expected to have troubles ahead: the printing market, the cashcow, is steadily shrinking. Printing is another victim of the mobile (internet) revolution.)...

How is “no road maps” a good thing? Without a roadmap, you’re just left blind as to what new products are coming down the pipe, and you’re just going off of random rumors! For quite a long time now, there have been rumors of a 100-400L IS update, and it was even rumored to be introduced at Photokina. Obviously, that didn’t happen. Others have been wondering what the heck Canon is going to do with their EOS M line. But with no roadmap, you’re just left hanging. And that’s what happens when companies don’t give us a roadmap: you don’t know...

A Post By: Simon Ringsmuth Photography is like any other pursuit in life, in that it requires a great deal of time and practice. Unless you make a living as a professional photographer, you might find that you simply don’t have enough hours in the day to devote to taking pictures. With work, family, school, and plenty of other obligations in our lives, it’s easy to let photography take a back seat to everything else. So, unfortunately we often find our expensive cameras gathering dust on the shelf, and our vibrant photo libraries growing ever more stagnant as the months and years pass. How...

A Post By: Jim Hamel When photographing outdoors, you generally take the world as you find it, and you have very little control over the elements. You cannot control the weather. The terrain is a given. You certainly cannot control the skies or the clouds. But when photographing seascapes there is one thing you can control, and that is the waves. At least, you can control the appearance of the waves. This is a fundamental difference between landscapes and seascapes. In landscapes you have generally static ground and foreground elements, while in seascapes you are dealing with a fluid...

Doesn’t make much sense, really. A digital camera is more computer than camera these days, and the sensor is just the tip of the iceberg. Improvements in power, processor design, process design, ISP technology, bus technology, storage technology, and more mean that, like computers, it does little good to simply drop in a new sensor. A spare but fair (i.e., not gratuitously snarky) report. DPR could only mention what Ricoh brought to the event, so it is what it is. My only observation would be on the point “As with all Pentax DSLRs, [theK-S1] optical viewfinder is very large for its price range.” Since all Pentax DSLR viewfinders are still high-quality pentaprisms, even the entry-level OVF’s are better than most viewfinders from other makers, in any price range. Viewfinder quality resonates somewhat with mention that DPR forgot a polarizer to eliminate glass case reflections (oops!). One of the finer...

I have to say that, Tamron isn’t quite on the sigma’s “art” prime lens level. 150-600 was more of a upgrade to sigma’s 50-500, but only minor. They make good lenses “for the buck”, like the 70-300 VC. What I fear is that this lens wont be “that sharp” wide open, which is area where it could have good potential versus the Nikon 16-35 f4 (low light action / movement, indoors / event). But then again, I don’t know enough about their 24-70 2.8 . If that thing is sharp wide open, then it could mean they know how to make some lenses...

A Post By: Barry J Brady Reducing noise in your images can make a huge difference to their quality We have all seen it in our images, that uneven grainy look that makes our images look a little unappealing. In the days of film, noise was called grain and it looked better (even the word grain sounded better) but the digital equivalent of noise can often make a good image look bad. The first question we need to answer is: What is noise? Generally speaking, noise is defined as aberrant pixels. That means pixels that are not representing the colour, or the exposure of the scene correctly. The...

A Post By: Melinda Smith A while ago, I went to the funeral for my husband’s dear Grandpa Wes, and I looked through old photos of him and his beautiful sweetheart, Daphene, who passed away just 6 months before (they couldn’t live without each other for very long). They had photos when they were young snuggled up together, holding hands, and even kissing, and it struck me how rare that was. Old photos usually are much more formal, and don’t show a lot of emotion or candid feelings. They also had more recent photos that showed the same affection, and that’s rare as well, to be married for...

Photokina’s big brand launches often overshadow the announcements from lesser known or smaller manufacturers, but we were lucky enough to spot the Relonch camera in Hall 2. And it’s definitely one of the more interesting exhibits at this year’s show. The Relonch is a “slide-on” camera module for the iPhone 5 and 6 that comes with an APS-C sized image sensor and a fast prime lens. However, at this stage most of the exhibits at the Relaunch booth are non-working design models. The only working unit is a prototype with an F2.0 lens that’s much bulkier...

A journalist should ask the tough questions and not just let Canon representative make an online advertisement. The man talks extensively about video but the changes are minor, late and not substantial. No articulated screen, no 4K, low end 4:2:0, no focus peaking, no advanced codec, no WiFi, no touch focus, no word about full sensor readout or line skipping. All of that make it inferior to the latest MILCs of Panasonic, Sony and other mirrorless brands, or even to Panasonic latest compacts. It seems like Canon still believe that their only rival is Nikon. @onlooker, specs sell cameras, especially in internet age. What other APS-C camera can claim 15 fps at full 28 MP resolution, 4K and UHD video recording, use of new h.265, etc, etc. Basically every feature of the camera is as good or better than any other competitor. Oh, and it has some of the best WiFi features of any camera on the market, sounds like it can geotag using info from your phone over Bluetooth, the remote control App is very good, and NFC is a nice quick way to start things off. The Nikon D750 offers a compelling feature set for its price point. If you care about image quality (particularly Raw), as well as the AF tracking capabilities that only a dedicated PDAF system with input from a separate RGB sensor can provide, then this camera literally has no competition at this price point. Save for the D810, which is more expensive, and – at least spec wise – may not offer the low-light AF capabilities of the D750 (we’ll have to verify this in testing, though). On a personal note, I myself am torn between the D750 and the D810. On the one hand, I want...

A Post By: James Brandon Milky Way Over Mono Lake | James Brandon Seeing the Milky Way with your own eyes is a life-changing, mind-blowing experience. It will put your place within the universe in to perspective and remind you just how small and insignificant we all are. The sad part is that most people have never seen it. Over half of our planet’s population lives in cities where seeing the Milky Way is all but impossible. Even when people get out of the city and have a good view of the stars, they usually don’t focus on them long enough to find the Milky Way. It’s something that you either...

A Post By: Andrew S. Gibson Andrew’s ebook Mastering Lightroom: Book Four – The Photos is available now at a special price of 40% off for a limited time from Snapndeals. I spent a few days in Potosí, a small, largely forgotten city whose history had a central role in shaping the...

“On paper, for what it can its tiny, especially compare to that Galaxy CRAP….oh I mean Galaxy zoom of Samsung.” You don’t know much of Smasung’s Zoom range, do you? Otherwise, you wouldn’t post such posts. FYI: the Zoom cameras have, for a 1/2.3″ sensor, very good IQ. Significantly better per-pixel sharpness than the iPhone 5s, for example. Of course, it can’t beat the 1020, let alone the 808, as it’s _meant_ to be a 10x optical zoom camera, which means no large sensor. Source Article from...

A Post By: John Davenport Photographers who are consistently producing stunning photographs don’t do so because they are lucky, observant, or even more skilled than the average photographer – they do so because they are not being lazy. Are you a lazy photographer? 6 signs you may be a lazy photographer #1 – You’re lazy about composing your shots You already know the basic rules of successful composition and you even know the rules for breaking those rules, but if you fail to put these rules into practice with every shot you take, then you’re being a lazy photographer. Composition is...

So much potential… wasted. I dont comment much in Dpreview… but if Canon can Read this, please do. Got to admit that im disapointed to see the Specs of the 7Dmk2. I was truly hoping that it will house a brand new Image Sensor with better performance to the APS-C lineup, and by performance I mean “Hardware Performance”, not via Software Digic 6 Procesors. Canon should listen a little to his costumers. AF and Burst are cool, but the true power comes in the IQ department, where its needed most also. Nobody wants a camera of 2014, that cost 1800USD, with the image quality...

Impressive specs indeed, although I’m not too crazy about the short zoom. Somethning like 100mm would have been much more practical for a compact. However, I’m more disppointed in the size. I know, it’s a m43 sensor in a body with external controls AND a VF, but still… too large (particularly, thick) to be anywhere near pocketable. I’ll defnitely wait for reviews as this is a really exciting camera, but right now, I’m slighlty more interested in the G7X, with its much smaller body, longer zoom, tilting screen and integrated flash (I truly hate those tiny...

This is how RX100 should have been!!!! — comment from a RX100 I and II user. When I read the title, I was ready to write down “Canon is SLOOOOOW again”. but now, wile still thinking Canon is slow, I have to say Canon showed its camera design thinking is still better than Sony. Almost perfect! Let’s GM6 will have a pop-up retractable evf like RX100 (preferably the same with the GH4/LX100?), the lcd will go back to the GM1 format and the f1/f2 buttons and 2nd wheel rearranged, the focusing mode wheel will go to the front (as in Sony RX1), and the top wheel will become a 2nd control wheel, with an extra f button in the middle (personally I would even like a repositioning of the on/off switch, so that a control wheel can be placed around the shutter). Let us also hope that a nice IBIS and 2nd curtain will be added, somehow. In the meantime, if the various tweaks...

A Post By: Jim Wise You get caught off-guard with a photo assignment and you might not have time to set up additional lights or have the luxury of using a reflector. Maybe it’s an awards event in a large room and you don’t want the background to go completely dark. You see a celebrity, rock star, astronaut or maybe it’s the president of your company that you need to photograph (see image below), or maybe you just need to travel light, with a minimum of gear. A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt Earlier I shared a bunch of images of wild animals for you to admire. There are some amazing shots out there and it takes a great amount of patience to be a wildlife photographer. So your challenge this week is to go out and photograph some animals. They don’t necessarily have to be wild, but if you can find some – bonus! By Massmo Relsig Your dog, the squirrel in backyard, or even a visit to your local zoo will work. Think about your lens selection (wildlife photographers usually use really long lenses, partly to keep their subjects from eating them), your...

Optical manufacturer Sigma has expanded its portfolio of lens filters with the introduction of four new models, three of which feature water and oil repellent coatings. The new coatings have been applied to the company’s ultra violet and circular polariser filters, as well as a new clear-glass protector. The WR water resistant coating is said to reduce the likelihood that water and oil will stick to the surface of the filters, and to make it easier to wipe them off if they do. Sigma says that the coating makes it easier to clean finger prints from the glass as well. The antistatic coating is...
