A Post By: Julian Dormon Dreaming about a career as a professional photographer? With the right guidance, practice, skills, network, and portfolio, you can make your dream come true. Developing the necessary skills required to be a professional photographer cannot easily be summed up in a single blog post, let alone many. And networking… well, if you are like most artists, that can be nightmarish, but nevertheless, is absolutely critical. As your referral network grows, so will your business. But that can take years. So, you may ask yourself, how do I start? Step 1 – create your...

A Post By: James Brandon Sample From My Newsletter Ready for some controversy? Well, here it goes: One of the most useless things I see a lot of photographers doing with their time is trying to get popular on social media. There, I said it! Now, please let me explain. There are certainly benefits of having a strong social media presence. I would be an idiot not to realize that. Just look up people like Colby Brown, Chris Burkhard, Nicole S. Young, Trey Ratcliff, Hilary Fox, etc. These people get flown around the world by large and small companies because of their social reach. The fact is,...

I was expecting a replacement for my D700 and they announced a glorified D610. Now I have to save for a d3s or something. 1/4000 and 1/200 sync ? This gives a hint as to where they got the shutter unit. SD cards ? Really ? I have CF cards, they are robust and fast, I love CF cards and I have never bent a pin in my D700 even though I use 3 different cards. AA filter ? Was it necesary on top of the rest ?! The body seems smallish, with a modest grip. I got into Nikon when the engineers and photography enthusiasts designed and specked the cameras, now it’s all down to the marketing...

A Post By: Nick Fancher For several years now I have used high speed sync (HSS) in order to light portraits in full sunlight at a wide aperture. If you’re unfamiliar with HSS, it allows you to shoot at shutter speeds that are higher than the native sync speed of your camera (usually 1/200 or 1/250 of a second, read your camera and flash manual to find yours) while still using speedlights. The reason this ability is so enticing is that you can shoot flash-lit images at wide open apertures in full sunlight, allowing for a shallow depth of field. Normally if you were using a flash, your...

A Post By: Barry J Brady Using different composition techniques can result in more dynamic images You have likely heard of the Rule of Thirds, in fact it seems as if this is the only rule of composition. To be fair though, the Rule of Thirds is a good go to tool when you are unsure of how to put a scene together compositionally. There are many other techniques that can be used to improve your composition. Techniques like balance, leading lines, symmetry, depth of field, and so on, can all make a big difference to your image. In many ways a photograph is very similar to a painting....

Fuji improved something like 70 things going from x100 to x100s, but it was still left with slow operation (slow start up time, problems with waking from sleep, shot to shot time too long, lens adjustments during AF taking too long, and for example it took two seconds to go from power off to Q menu change for example), mediocre battery life, rear command dial working erratically, power switch that was too loose – constantly switching the camera on while it was in my bag, support for EyeFi was highly disappointing, RAW support disappointing (since I’m not an Mac user and the...

Fujifilm has announced its second weather-resistant X-series zoom lens, the Fujinon XF 50-140mm F2.8 R LM OIS WR. Designed to accompany the water- and dust-resistant Fujifilm X-T1, the lens offers an equivalent 76-213mm range on Fuji’s X-series interchangeable lens cameras – essentially equivalent to a popular 70-200mm telephoto zoom on full frame. Built with 23 elements in 16 groups, the 50-140mm uses an internal zoom design so that the lens maintains the same overall length as it zooms. The lens features two OIS elements in conjunction with a high-performance gyro sensor...

Gearing up for Photokina, Fujifilm has announced the XF 56mm F1.2 R APD – APD standing for apodization. The lens is a variant of the existing XF56mm F1.2 R, utilizing the same underlying design of 11 elements in 8 groups but it adds an apodization filter. Essentially, the apodization filter is a radial gradient filter designed to exactly compensate for any bright regions in the circles of confusion the lens projects. This means it should produce out-of-focus highlights with even fall-off and smoother rendering of out-of-focus regions. It would also be expected to match the existing...

A Post By: Darren Rowse I started Digital Photography School as a simple blog in April 2006. My goal was to share the things I knew about photography with those just starting out in their journey – in a time where digital photography was really gaining momentum. Since that time dPS has changed in many ways. One of the changes since starting dPS in 2006 is the rise in social media. We’ve embraced this early on by creating an active dPS Facebook page and Twitter account. These accounts are largely about highlighting new tutorials that we publish each day as well as highlighting some of the...

A Post By: Harry Fisch #1 Great travel photos are planned Just think about what you are going to do, understand the scene, watch the light, the movement of people inside the image. When you take your pictures you have to consider all factors: from the time of day and the light, to the emotional preparation of the characters. It is true that luck exists, that someone at some time photographed just that smile, that you can collect stolen photos using a long lens. But few stolen photos have survived to become part of the history of travel photography. #2 The hair in your soup: An error for some...

A Post By: Sarah Hipwell Photography is essentially capturing light. Beginners to photography can find the learning curve quite steep. To start with, there is the technical side. You need to understand what the camera can do and its limitations. Then there is the theory aspect, simply put you need to know what exposure is and how to achieve this with your camera if you want to get that creative shot. About four years ago, I was shooting a couple of models in my city of Dublin outdoors with a few fellow photographers. The day was overcast and I was just hoping it wouldn’t rain. Thankfully,...

Generally, this isn’t a huge difference for _high key_, since they’re both kinda bright, but there is generally a different emotional effect: * High-key image: ethereal, delicate, dream-like* High-key lighting: cheery, upbeat, energetic but if we go to _low key_, there’s a huge difference: low key *lighting* usually means that there’s a lot of contrast from a hard non-key light. This is often dramatic and dynamic, whereas a low key image in the classical sense has an overall sense of darkness, often without contrasting highlights: * Low-key image: somber, restrained,...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt Have you ever used a nice big aperture and got home only to find out the focus isn’t on the part you wanted? Or done a portrait and their ears are nice and sharp not their eyes? If so, you might have a lens focusing issue. There are ways to test for that and depending on your camera model you may be able to adjust it. I found a video where the host walks you through the process of fine tuning autofocus for your DSLR. I think her accent is great and I love knowing that people around the world have the same issues and there are great photographers and...

A Post By: Alex Morrison If you’re like most photographers, nothing gets you more excited than a new tip or trick that can help you make your photographs more awe inspiring. The problem is that a lot of these processes can take some time to learn and execute correctly. Pretty quickly you realize that it may take you more than a few tries to master the new technique to become a better photographer. A mundane parking lot light stand can become something wondrous. You’re also busy with more than just photography to take care of, and with instant gratification pervading all aspects of our...

High-key lighting is a classic look for portraits or product photography that minimizes shadows and produces a bright, vibrant and upbeat aesthetic. Although typically shot in the studio with lots of high-powered lights, it’s possible to produce a similar look at home with some fairly basic kit. We’ll talk you through how we captured these ‘high-key’ maternity portraits in the garden and give you some advice on camera settings and editing tricks so you can shoot them too. The setup: What you’ll need A camera (preferably one that shoots Raw) A large white sheet...

A Post By: Steve Gandy When I’m teaching my photography classes, the students and I are often neck deep into discussions of the exposure triangle; shutter speed, aperture size and sensor sensitivity (ISO). You can find great discussions and explanations of the triangle here on the dPS. I’d like to dissect the ISO corner of the issue, and give you a simple technique you can use to set the ISO to the best value for the situation. Understanding ISO is one thing but setting it correctly on the fly is another. An equilateral triangle represents a well-exposed image. If any corner is too long,...

A Post By: Helen Bradley When you capture images using a high ISO setting you will invariably end up with some noise in your photos. If the noise is distracting and if you want to remove it, then Lightroom can help. A word of warning Before start using any noise removal tool it will pay to understand that noise removal is generally achieved at the expense of losing some detail in the photo. This is because the noise removal process involves smoothing the image pixels, and this in turn compromises fine detail. In addition, the main Lightroom noise removal tool applies the fix to the entire...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt Last week’s challenge was also black and white and in keeping with the them, earlier today I shared a set of black and white portraits. Your challenge this week, if you choose to accept it, is do photograph a real person and do a portrait in black and white. By Sean Molin There are lots of articles here on dPS to help you with that and get some inspiration including: Create Better Black and White Photos Using Local Adjustments in Lightroom 5 How to Convert Photos to Black and White in Lightroom How to See in Black and White DISCUSS: When you Photograph People...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt Last week we looked at a collection of stunning black and white landscape photos. This week it’s all about portraits in the same modality. So close together by Magda Constantin on 500px For me there is something special about a portrait done in black and white, something about it that allows the photographer to exposure the subject’s very soul itself. The simplistic nature of being monochromatic means the focus is on light, shape, tone and emotion more so than with color, in my opinion anyway. Black and white portraits transport me to a time of the master...

Western Digital has launched a new wireless-enabled hard drive that uniquely features a built-in SD card reader. The My Passport Wireless might be coming to the market after other wireless options like the LaCie Fuel drive, but it’s the inclusion of the SD card reader that makes this product of particular interest to photographers. When a memory card is inserted into the drive it can be set back up your photos or automatically ingest all images, then wipe the card clean afterwards. To view your images you can either connect the drive to a computer using USB3, or you can connect to it...

Epson has announced a new A3+ desktop pigment-ink inkjet printer aimed at the professional and semi-professional photographer that it claims is capable of producing a maximum black density of 2.8. According to Epson this beats all competitors’ A3+ machines that use 6 or more inks. The SureColor SC-P600 is part of Epson’s plan to introduce ten new professional printers to the market under the ‘Sure’ brand by 2016, and is the first SureColor model to be aimed at the photo market. A source at Epson told DP Review that we should expect the Stylus Pro name to be gradually phased out as...

Delaware-based company CAMS is raising money to create a range of mounting plates for DSLR users to carry their gear from a mount on the bottom, rather than the top of the camera. The low-profile CAMS Pro Camera Plate and Lens Plate attach to the tripod screws on the bottom of your camera (and lenses with a tripod collar) and provide a firm mounting point for the company’s quick-release neoprene straps. This image shows the construction of the CAMS Pro Camera Plate, which attaches to the tripod socket on the bottom of a DSLR, providing an attachment point for the neoprene strap,...

At an event in Berlin, Nokia has today announced the first high-end smartphone since the company’s device division was purchased by software maker Microsoft. At a retail price of 330 Euros before tax and subsidies (approximately US$ 430) the Lumia 830 is what Microsoft calls an “affordable flagship” and comes with an 8.5mm slim body which is made, in true Nokia fashion, out of aluminum and polycarbonate. The device runs Windows Phone 8.1 powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor and comes with a 720p 5-inch display. This all sounds pretty mid-range but the...

A Post By: Alex Morrison There is really nothing more frustrating for photographers than a camera sensor that is full of dust and specks. Dust on the sensor happens, it’s just a fact of digital photographic life. If you’re an outdoor photographer with a zoom lens, or one who changes lenses in the field, dust and particles will find a way onto your sensor on an almost regular basis. But even studio photographers experience the distress of a dirty sensor. The world’s dirtiest camera sensor. Yuck. A few weeks ago I was on a mountain photo tour, and was constantly changing lenses in the...

Since I love photographing teens (who doesn’t??), I’m thrilled to share some tips. These aren’t tips for photographing the aspiring model teens. Those teens are usually pretty easy to photograph, they will pose for you until the cows come home, and love every minute of it. No, I’m going to let you in on some ideas for photographing those teens that aren’t so enthusiastic about being there. Sometimes they’re super...

Excellent photos. As has been noticed below, the colours nicely correspond with British weather 😉 e.g. the goose picture. My favourites are the goose (No 1, perfect composition, matching colours and mood, good title), the otter (3, thatÅ› real wildlife, good timing), b&w shark (5, like a PC animation, fascinating) and the gnat (absolutely minimalistic, almost surreal). Deserved winners I think. Source Article from...

Samsung has announced the latest iteration of its top-of-the-line phablet, the Galaxy Note 4, at simultaneous events in New York and Berlin today. In terms of design the new model is very close to its predecessor, the Galaxy Note 3, and also features the same faux-leather back. Under the hood, however, things have been upgraded significantly, specifically in the camera department. For mobile photographers, the big news about the Galaxy Note 4 is its optical image stabilization system which makes it the first Samsung smartphone to offer this feature. This is great news in so far that...

Having used the QX10, I had exactly that issue tkbslc. It straps around my wrist, great, now add a Galaxy S4 to that and I have a very awkward setup. The module is thick enough that it doesn’t fit in a pocket well at all (like a point and shoot would), so it really needs a purse or something, which I don’t carry. Then, add all the usability issues or having a Wi-Fi based screen and you have a rather useless toy. Having to wait 12 seconds to compose a photo (can take one right away, but no screen to compose for many seconds) or draining my cell phone battery very rapidly keeping...

More like the existing QX10 and QX100, the QX30 is single unit containing a sensor and lens, providing a 20MP 1/2.3″-type sensor and a longer 24-720mm equivalent optical zoom with OIS. Both modules contain Wi-Fi and NFC for quick pairing...

A Post By: Andrew S. Gibson This diagram shows the three colour spaces that Lightroom works with. Photo from Wikipedia One of the key differences between Lightroom and Photoshop is their approach to colour management. In Photoshop, once out of Adobe Camera Raw, you can go to the Colour Settings menu option and tell Photoshop in which colour space you want it to work. How Lightroom works Lightroom works differently. When processing Raw files, Lightroom uses the ProPhotoRGB colour space the whole time, and there’s nothing you can do to change it. The benefits of this method are: Less colour...

A Post By: Adam Welch There is an unnervingly common trait among photographers, image makers, picture people, etc. Sometimes we forget that the reason we have access to such awesome gear and techniques, is because those who came before us in our trade figured them out, practiced them, advance them, and then left us a legacy of knowledge. The further we go back through the history of photography, the more prevalent this apathy becomes. What do you have to learn from someone who used a camera less advanced than a garage door opener? Well, as it turns out, we stand to learn a lot. Maybe not...

Sometimes low-tech is simply more reliable. OVFs don’t require power to function, and the image is updated at literally the speed of light. At any moment whilst in use, a mirrorless camera is powering its sensor, its image processor, and some form of screen, be it an EVF or not. Most of the time your DSLR is turned on, the only components actually drawing power are the AF sensors and possibly motor, the metering system, and if applicable, the top LCD—all of which require minimal power to operate. Of course, my priorities are showing. What are your priorities? Source Article from...

German optical manufacturer Zeiss has announced a new range of lenses called Loxia, designed for full frame cameras using the Sony E mount – essentially the Sony Alpha 7 series at the moment. The Loxia 2/35 and Loxia 2/50 are based on the company’s existing 35mm f/2 Biogon and 50mm f/2 Planar lenses from the ZM range. Both models will allow users to deactivate the ‘click’ of the aperture ring by turning a screw on the lens mount, making these lenses suitable for videography as well as for stills. Zeiss claims the lenses will also transmit data to host bodies regarding...

In the build-up to Photokina, Canon is celebrating its 80th anniversary. The seed was planted in 1934 when a company called Seiki-Kogaku Kenkyusho placed an advert for a camera called the Kwanon in the Asahi Camera magazine. The company, whose name translates as Precision Optical Instruments Laboratory, was formed by movie camera repairman Goro Yoshida, who wanted to develop the first Japanese 35mm rangefinder camera in a world where European brands like Leica and Contax, dominated. To see how these cameras worked he reportedly took apart a Leica Model II, and Canon’s history pages...

To all the guys that compare the X30 with the RX100 III: Both cams are on a very high level and both have advantages and disadvantages. RX 100 III: slightly better image quality, presumably at higher iso, smaller body, less zoom-range, awkwardly VF, slippery body, hardly usable with both hands, better to use with one hand (it is your personal choice wether this is an advantage or an disadvantage) X30: biger, better zoom-range, more practically VF, can used with both hands (like you use a DSLR – what is in my personal opinion a clear advantage – but this can be completely...

A Post By: Will Barnes The hardest part about gaining a photo pass for a large gig is in needing a strong portfolio of concert photos – getting a portfolio of works together when you can’t get access to shows makes things quite tricky. This article will explore how to build your first portfolio and in turn how to secure your first photo pass. While She Sleeps, shot for Brighton Noise Get the gear A lot of photographers will say it doesn’t matter which gear you have, and that it’s all about how you use what you’ve got. I completely disagree with this for music photography, you will...

A Post By: Kav Dadfar There is no doubt that travel photography is an incredibly rewarding profession because you have an opportunity to tell stories through your own pictures. But it is also one of the most challenging genres to master. Besides having to be able to photograph everything from people and architecture, to food and landscapes, you are also often at the mercy of the elements. Getting a great travel photo isn’t easy and it often doesn’t come about by luck. You have to be willing to work hard to capture the shot that you want. Here are 5 simple tips to help you improve your...

A Post By: Anup Ghimire Masking is one of those techniques that will change the way you use Photoshop. Understanding this technique can help you to jump from being a beginner level Photoshop user, to a more advanced one. In this article, I will explain how masking really works in Photoshop, its few key concepts, and how Masking helps you to perform non-destructive editing. The skills you need to get started masking in Photoshop are being able to use the brush tool to paint color, understand two colors black and white, and knowledge of how layers work in Photoshop, which I assume you have...

@ GRUBERNDOn the contrary, there have been massive changes in the area of Berlin´s architecture and city layout, in its political and social structure as well (think of the reunion with East Germany) as well as in its economic importance since the end of WWII and in particular since the reunion in 1989. Besides most media agree in the opinion that Berlin is one of the liveliest, most creative and open cities of the world.Sorry to say that, but your opinion may be either based on ignorance or resentment. A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt This video by Munetake Kayo over at BigHeadTaco compares some of the features of both of these popular Fuji mirrorless cameras. If you’re considering getting a more compact camera and downsizing from a DSLR, or maybe upgrading from a point and shoot camera – you might end up looking at one of these Fuji cameras. I know for me, as a previous film shooter, the X-T1 has a lot of appeal and it currently sitting on my list to get. So I was interested to see this comparison and it actually solidified my choice. Check out the Fuji X-T1 versus X-E2 in the video...

A Post By: Mike Newton Almost every lens changes the way your image looks by warping it in some way. Each lens can create barrel distortion, vignetting at big apertures, chromatic aberration, and more. Some lenses have more distortion than others. Let’s look at four tools in Lightroom’s lens correction module that are a lifesaver 1. The easy button – lens profile corrections in one click Before lens corrections: Brick wall at 16mm, f/2.8, ISO 1250. You can see the ‘bulge’ in the middle because the horizontal lines are not parallel. Also notice the dark corner vignetting from...

Nikon has issued a firmware update for the D4S. The long list of improvements included in this firmware version are mostly minor bug fixes and tweaks to menus and camera operation. With the firmware version, the camera’s behavior in movie mode is changed when a menu is engaged and the record button is pressed. Also updated is the ability to use the zoom on/off option in playback to zoom in on the active focus point mode for images shot in live view. See the full details below. Surprise, surprise. Leica has been moving themselves toward obscurity for years. At this point in their history, is ANYONE still expecting them to come out with an exciting, innovative product? It’s also notable that Micro 43 has a combined number of 17.9%, the same as Nikon and just a tiny bit behind Canon! Sure the real life sales numbers tell a different story, but surely a poll which asks about interest in a brand’s future products tells an important story about that brand’s future sales prospects? Canon and Nikon are setting themselves up to go the way of Kodak....

You never have had a Sony DSC-V1, or Sony DSC-R1, don’t you? Both received a Firmware 2.0 Upgrade long time ago, whereas the V1 was the 1st Sony Digicam with Flashrom into it’s heyday. The Sony Alpha DSLR Series also have had many updates, and serveral NEX, too. It’s nice to see the RX10 got better, because as it already does have the “Bionz-X” Processor, i was wondering when (or if) Sony would update to XAVC S months ago – to get a bit better against the FZ1000 Lumix. Anyway, i currently don’t care about that 4k Marketing Hype – and the...
