A Post By: Leah O’Connell Opening Photoshop for the first time is kind of like going on your first date; your hands sweat, your eyes glaze over, you completely lose all sense of direction and time. At least that was the scenario for me. Photoshop is an incredibly complex program that can be used as an artistic tool for positive enhancement, or gross distortion when it comes to portraiture. It’s all too easy to over-edit, get carried away with the sheer number of the tools at your fingertips, or attempt elaborate cover-up schemes for poorly shot images when first starting out. There...

A Post By: Bruce Wunderlich Photography has been around since the early 1820’s. Of course, back then the technology of “picture taking†was not accessible to the common person. But have things ever changed! With the availability of digital cameras ever present, even in our cell phones, take a moment to consider these facts. Every two minutes today there are as many photos taken as were taken in the entire 19th century (1800s), and ten percent of all the photos ever taken were snapped within the last twelve months! The Postcard: The Start Westward Monument in Marietta, Ohio. (18mm...

GoPro’s in-house production team travel the globe with some of the world’s best athletes and produce videos like the Hero 3+ launch, currently sitting at over 16 million views on YouTube. This week GoPro and its production team released a new tutorial series called the GoPro Field Guide, a set of videos designed to delve a little deeper into some of the more complex functions of its action camera lineup. Getting started with a GoPro is relatively easy, but understanding and mastering the vast array of more technical options can be a little daunting. This video series talks you...

This week Corel has unveiled PaintShop Pro X7 and PaintShop Pro X7 Ultimate, two new versions of its image editing software for Windows. This update features extensive changes to the user interface as well as a claimed 30 percent improvement in brush performance, including the Paint Brush, Airbrush and various retouching tools. Speed improvements have allowed for new instant previews of effects before they are applied to images and the 64-bit architecture allows fast performance with larger or multiple images. As well as enhancing existing existing features, PaintShop Pro X7 also adds...

Casio is set to launch a new style of action cam in September featuring a wireless camera unit that is detachable from the main body. The Casio Exilim EX-FR10, which will initially be only available in the Japanese market, uses a Bluetooth connection with a range of up to 10m between the body and the camera so images can be recorded remotely and monitored on the 2″ 230k-dot touch screen. The idea is to separate the recording end from the control and monitoring end, to make the camera easier to use. GoPro cameras have their lens and controls on the same unit, which can make it...

A Post By: Andrew S. Gibson I used an 85mm lens fitted with a 500D close-up lens to create this photo of a Chinese Water Dragon. Two things occurred to me When I read Phillip VanNostrand’s article The Only Three Lenses You Need for Travel Photography. One, is that his choice of lenses would not be my choice. Two, is that you cannot recommend three lenses for every photographer to use, as everybody’s requirements are different. Imagine if you went to a showroom to buy a new car and the salesperson said “Sir, the only car for you is a Ford Focusâ€. Fine, if that’s the car you happen...

A Post By: Monica Day Aaaaghhhh!!!! Why aren’t people knocking down my door to get me to photograph their most precious moments?! We’ve all said this. We’ve all had those moments where we just don’t understand where the people are, or the ones that will pay us are. Or you’ve finally built a business and now it’s time to move. I get it. I’m a military spouse. I move…a lot. I have to rebuild my business every two to four years. But I’ve done it, and so can you. You don’t have to be a military spouse to benefit from these tips. They can be applied to a new business, a new...

Ok, the one Olympus camera that fits virtually all my needs is the E-M1, and that’s what I’ll be buying in the foreseeable future. No other MFT camera yet came as close to my highly regarded E-30 for me as to consider buying it, not even the E-M5 or E-M10 or the Panasonic GH3/4 or the GX7, the latter of which I nonetheless find very appealing, it’s just that I either need more and faster and better native lenses in the long telephoto range – or, alternatively, the FT compatibility so far only the E-M1 offers. Nonetheless, with the E-M1 now being on my path, I still...

Olympus has announced the PEN E-PL7, refreshing its entry-level mirrorless line. It offers a 16MP CMOS sensor, 3-axis image stabilization system borrowed from the OM-D E-M10, 8 fps continuous shooting and built-in Wi-Fi. Not forgetting the self-portrait-obsessed masses, the E-PL7 provides an articulated 3″ touch LCD, capable of flipping downward by 180°. Along with the E-PL7, Olympus has also announced an update to its OI.Share app as well as a black version of its M.Zuiko 12mm F2.0 prime. The OI.Share update brings the ability to control Live Bulb exposure via mobile device....

If you check on some of the other, Pentax-centric sites, you will see that they have released images of color-matched versions of the kit-zoom, which match the body quite well and which will probably be the only lenses most target purchasers of this camera will ever own. The white version of this camera, with matched lens, actually looks quite nice. If anything, the black and blue versions are probably the -least- attractive package they have! DPR presumably got a pre-production sample of the body, with a standard black kit lens, so you have the worst of both worlds. Source Article from...

Ricoh and its Pentax brand have never been afraid of a little color, and the introduction of the K-S1 DSLR reaffirms that. The K-S1 offers a 20.1MP APS-C sensor, an AA filter simulator (as seen on the Pentax K-3) and burst shooting at 5.4 fps, but none of that is quite as attention-grabbing as its headline body specification – a set of green LEDs on the camera’s grip and power switch. Called an ‘illumination interface system,’ the lights serve more as an embellishment than a practical feature. They pulse as modes are changed, provide a visual cue as the countdown...

A Post By: Olivier Duong Ever felt that your images are missing a certain je-ne-sais-quoi? I remember when I was a proud young shooter, I showed my images to my photography 101 teacher, ready for him to crown me the next best photographer he’s ever seen (Hey I was young). He looked at them, and politely said “They are coming alongâ€. What. The. Heck dude!? I looked at him in disbelief. I tried some Jedi mind tricks on him; trying to juice some positive note out of him. After a while, it was evident he didn’t want to offend me, I tried pressing him a last time and he gave me the same...

Serious Sam: I’m not disputing the fact that better glass exists, you seem to have missed that point where I acknowledged that fact. Some companies, Nikon, Fuji, and Samsung do indeed use the marketing term “ED”, Zeiss doesn’t. Nor do Leica and Canon. You seem real confused about this. The fact remains that clearly Samsung uses very very good glass in 4 lenses faster than f/2.8. That wiki link says nothing about some minimum standard for “ED” glass. You were wrong about Samsung NX lenses, and got called out with examples, and lose yourself in marketing...

Lars, does the app have to speed up the motion? You mention speeding it up up to 12 times. But what if you want to keep the motion at 1x speed, but just smooth it out. Could it do that, or is the speeding up essential to the smoothing process? I’m asking as if the app does not have to speed up the footage, this could end the need for steadycam use. Then one could keep the audio that goes with the video. I’d check it myself, but I’m an Android man, so no access to the app as yet. Source Article from...

With the camera industry moved on somewhat since the birth of the Fuji X series compact, is there still room for a 12-million-pixel compact in a less-than compact body? The X30 (left) positioned alongside its predecessor the X20. The two cameras share the same 12MP X-Trans sensor, but the X30 boasts some worthwhile refinements, including a built-in EVF, articulating rear LCD and much better battery life. I wonder if we should expect the third incarnation of any camera to be rather more significantly different from the first than Fuji’s X30 is from the original X10. We are still looking...

A Post By: Natasha Cadman Light: it is the main component for every image that you will take. It does however come in many different forms, producing very different results. Some of these types of light are diffused, backlit and reflected. There will be times when each of these types of light is more readily available than another, or even in some cases multiple types of light at once. Some people create their full photographic style by using a certain type more, or less, exclusively in their work. But, knowing how to first spot the different light forms will allow you to take full of...

A Post By: Valerie Jardin Humor may very well be the toughest assignment the street photographer will take on. It takes a keen eye to see humor in the streets and some skills to capture it in a fraction of a second. Here are a few things to consider before you head out on a quest to photograph humorous situations in the streets: Humor can be subtle ©Valerie Jardin Story in a frame Just like a good joke, no explanation should be necessary. A catchy caption should suffice to enhance the humor conveyed in the image. Many newspapers used to have a ‘feature’ picture in every issue. Many...

That pleasure factor is high in my list, and that’s why my camera is the X-Pro1 with the 14mm F2.8 almost glued to it. Shutter speed dial, aperture ring, focus scale… Now that I saw it in the X-T1, all I miss is the ISO dial. The Sony lacks all that, but so does the X30 (well, except for the comp. dial, that I don’t find that appealing when the other controls aren’t ‘traditional’) and the Coolpix. Yet Sony managed to put a tilting LCD and an EVF (I think the Nikon lacks both), and, compared to the Fuji, a larger sensor, in such a smaller body that it makes...

This fixed zoom series had a few trademarks along its overall experience design and size, mainly its IQ given by its sensor+lens combination that should already be improved by now, instead of making up an old lady which doesn’t make sense at all. I wished I could keep up my love. My heart is broken. Source Article from...

Is this large-sensor compacts? Or viewfinder compacts? Or also 1/1.7″, raw-capable compacts? Or compacts above a certain physical size? And why exclude the elephant in the room, the RX100? It seems this is a collection of cameras that stand out in some way or another. Or maybe it was to have one or two contenders in each interesting category. (a) compact, 200 mm, viewfinder, but 1/1.7″ (P7800)(b) compact, fast-ish lens, 1/1.7″ (G16)(c) compact-ish, 200+ mm, viewfinder, 1/1.7″ (Stylus)(d) compact, large-ish sensor (X-20)(e) smaller than a ILC+superzoom, 200+ mm, large...

A Post By: Christina Peters Have you ever tried shooting food? If you have, then you know how hard this can be. There are so many things you have to think about while making sure your food looks as fresh as it can be at the same time. Here is a beginner’s guide to help you get the food shots you’ve always wanted. #1. Do NOT use your on-camera flash You probably know this already, but I just have to mention this here to make sure. After all, this is Digital Photography School. Your on-camera flash looks horrible on food. You will get loads of specular highlights on any area that has...

A Post By: Daniel Korzeniewski I have a confession to make: I used to be a pixel peeper. There was a time when I’d spent hours zooming in and inspecting photos at 1:1 or even 300 percent. I was looking for a technically perfect photo. Back then, most of the work I was shooting was aimed at micro stock outlets. At most of them, the inspectors and image editors were not easy to get around. Noise, camera shake, out of focus, chromatic aberration, white balance, basically any issues would end up in an image rejection. That actually helped me. I learned the technical side of photography, but I...

“Probably right now there are not so many that agree with you, but in 2-3 years there will be no point in buying such an expensive slow zoom other the similar (or cheaper) priced 1″ superzoom alternatives” Yup, WRT superzoom DSLR / MILC lenses which only exist because of convenience, probably. Nevertheless, 1″ superzooms will never match the IQ of a decent m43 or, even better, APS-C camera with a non-superzoom lens. Source Article from...

Many photographers at some point experiment with a light source(s) as a means of mark-making or drawing within the frame of a photograph, ala Picasso’s Centaur (technique actually dates back far earlier – first probably Frank and Lillian Galbreth, 1914); but, for most photographers, it is a quick check-off phase, often arguably unrelated to the primary arc of their development. In contrast, I am always interested to see certain artists take off their coats and stay for awhile. I largely enjoy Kimbell’s work here. Taken on an aesthetic level some images work better than...

Thank you for posting this DPR! This guy blew me away with his images, discipline and thought process. He has balls to think of composition whilst a shark is eyeing him. My favorite is his story on the dolphins. Those are really intelligent creatures. To improvise and cooperatively hunt with a mammal not of their species (human) is a truly interesting experience. Depicting weapons and other war-related subjects will always remain a sensitive issue requiring some tact. I count myself lucky in that I’ve never had to fight in a war, nor experienced it in any other direct way, well aware that it would have likely killed my soul. Yet, for a long time, I’ve been interested in what it was like and what it did to the generations of my parents (who were touched by it as small children) and grandparents (who lived through two world wars). Does this mean that I have a thirst for war, that I take an unsavoury interest in it, that I’m a sadist?...

Butterflies are commonplace, but the shot in this sequence was exceptional, and proof commonplace can be great if the photographer has the eye, and you don’t need the exotic venus for fantastic shots! Ladybug is super macro, but did the photographer pull it off? Extension tubes? This picture is extra special, by showing the eggs. Thanks to all of the photographers for great shots … would be ecstatic if ANY of them came from my camera. Source Article from...

A Post By: Simon Ringsmuth If you have a pocket camera, you might have spent hours pouring over reviews, spec sheets, and comparisons trying to find something better like a DSLR or Micro Four Thirds camera. Too often we dismiss our humble pocket cameras because they don’t have big lenses, flash mounts, custom exposure controls, or even enough buttons on the back to do what we really want. While there are certainly good reasons for shelling out hundreds of dollars for a fancier camera, chances are your pocket camera can do a lot more than you might think. Let’s explore a few tips that you...

A Post By: Tim Gilbreath As a photographer, whether it be professional or hobbyist, you have several skill sets to juggle and many hats to wear; you’ll need to be an artist when composing your photo’s scene, technically proficient with your camera and settings, and in the case of professionals, an adept businessperson who can maintain a business and satisfy clients consistently. One of the most important roles you play as a photo enthusiast is that of image editor. Rarely do our images come straight out of the camera exactly as we had envisioned, so before release we are required to put...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt Earlier today I shared a bunch of flower photos to brighten your day. I can’t think of anyone who doesn’t like flowers, even the roughest toughest guys can appreciate nature’s beauty and splendour. By Michael J. Moeller The weekly photography challenge is flowers. Now of course it’s your turn. Go find some flowers and photograph them. Go for a walk, find some wild flowers, or visit a garden. You could even think outside the box and make paper flowers or draw some on the sidewalk in chalk. Perhaps you could set up your tripod and do some macro shots and...

Hasselblad has taken another step towards the total switch to CMOS sensors with the introduction of new multi-shot versions of the company’s H5D 50c, including a model that outputs images of up to 200 million pixels. The H5D-50c MS and H5D-200c MS are 4-shot and 6-shot bodies that use pixel shifting to create higher resolution images than their 50-million-pixel sensors could in a single shot. The new bodies replace the existing H4D 50MS and 200MS, upgrading with the new 50-million-pixel CMOS sensor used in the H5D 50c and the recently announced CFV-50c V system back. A Post By: Barry J Brady Close-up photos of flowers can make for interesting colours and shapes There is something magical about seeing a subject up close and personal. This opens up a whole new world of options for you as a photographer. Close-up photography, or macro photography, can be a very rewarding form of photographic expression. The great thing about it is that you can do this from your basement at home, if necessary. Of course you can, and should, go outdoors too and setup shots in a forest or at the sea, but you can also setup shots of everyday subjects and shoot them up close....

The only reason to shoot a rangefinder is because the rangefinder, as a tool, makes sense for your approach to photography. Once you’ve established that a rangefinder is the right tool for you, you do not have to spend $10,000. You can head over to KEH and get a used M3 with a Zeiss 50 f/2 for about $1,600. HP5 is available for $6/roll, and a scanner will run you a couple hundred bucks. Chemistry is less than $100 for everything you need. (And for what it’s worth, film M’s are still nicer than digital ones.) Should you want a digital body you’ll have to pay more. Used...

A Post By: Daniel Korzeniewski Chromatic aberration is a phenomenon caused by distortion of the lens. Basically, it is a failure of the lens to focus all the colors to the same convergence point. The effect can be generally seen in dark edges adjacent to bright areas of an image; it looks like an out-of-focus ghost of magenta or purple color. In photography this is also called “purple fringingâ€. The quality of the optic plays an important role here, as not all lenses will produce the same effect. This problem tends to manifest much more in zoom lenses with variable aperture. However, no...

A Post By: Melinda Smith Yes, you read that right. 10 minutes tops (not counting editing time), and you could have a set of photos worthy to hang on the wall. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not telling you that every session should be that speedy, but sometimes that’s all the time you have. Maybe you’re dealing with some kids that aren’t too happy about being there, and 10 minutes is all they’re going to give you before the meltdown. Maybe you’ve got awful weather, and you’ve got 10 minutes before the tornado hits. Maybe you decide 10 minutes before the sun goes down that it’s the...

Film industry accessory manufacturer Cinoflex was recently tasked with rigging up a new Sony a7S mirrorless camera for use on a Chevrolet commercial. After some testing, the Cinoflex Type SA7S Camera System was created to allow the filmmakers to attach the necessary range of auxiliary equipment needed on a high budget commercial shoot. The a7S features a full-frame sensor which is much larger than the Super 35 sized sensors found in typical high-end digital video cameras like the Red Epic or the Arri Alexa, two of the cameras that you would normally expect to find on such a project. The...

Got a few minutes to spare? You’ve got enough time on your hands to help a group of researchers tackle a massive problem. Cities at Night is a project aiming to recruit help from ordinary citizens in classifying images of Earth at night taken by astronauts aboard the International Space Station. An effort of Universidad Complutense de Madrid staff and students, their main goal is to better understand and reduce light pollution. There are several ways you can help out. By using a few different web applications, users can aid in identifying points of light as cities, stars or aurora...

As far as panoramic stitching and parallax errors, the camera phones have two things in their favor – 1) the small sensor has a greater DOF (not essentially necessary for parallax, but helps with stitching across the board), and 2) the extremely thin camera/lens makes the offset pretty much negligible. I often shoot outdoor 360-degree panos with a m43 camera and 14mm (28mm equiv.) lens. Using MS ICE, as long as I’m no closer than, say, five feet or so to a subject (e.g. tree), I rarely see parallax errors, even when just using a standard tripod and NO panorama head. However, I...

A Post By: Dylan Goldby The bride’s most prized possession for the wedding day A visual story, although no longer used as frequently in magazines or media, is a powerful way to give your viewer a taste of a situation without having to be there. It’s also a great way to challenge yourself to produce a coherent body of work. A collection of images, or picture story, can be engrossing and tell a story far beyond what a single image could do. Think back to a recent trip you took, a night out with your significant other, a favourite book or film. Try to describe it to an audience using only...

Well, I do. I’m certainly interested in, even if the Samsung bodies don’t exactly entice me, Samsung’s excellent lens lineup. Of course the x000 series is too basic / entry-level for me, though. A decent, future, x00 or x0 series (that is, mid/high-level) camera, however, would be more than welcome, at least for me to recommend to friends. Particularly if they, at last, fix the JPEG output… Source Article from...

Good news for all users of Microsoft’s Windows Phone mobile operating system: two years after HTC launched its Windows Phone flagship model 8XÂ the Taiwanese manufacturer now offers another high-end model with the Microsoft OS, giving consumers more choice. Today HTC has revealed a Windows Phone version of the HTC One M8, originally launched with Google’s Android OS in March this year. The One M8 for Windows is currently an exclusive model for Verizon in the US and comes with identical hardware to its Android sibling. However, on the software side of things Windows Phone...

It seems to be a general problem, not only Nikon: 5D3 also had a light leak, Fuji X-T1, leica released v1.0 firmware after the camera was shipped … for T if i remember correctly, a lot of shutter vibration in a lot of cameras (olympus, sony) … So it is not a QC problem only, it’s probably more complex, and it is more about the time that is spend today in a generation: engineering & testing. They all should have a break, and slow down the pace a bit to allow for their teams to do the job properly. But marketing is marketing, and it has always been more important...

A Post By: Lynsey Mattingly No matter what type of photography you specialize in or prefer, at some point you will find yourself having to photograph a human, or multiple humans. For favor, for fun, or because they share your genetic make-up or home address. If you own a fancy camera, there you will be at least once in your photographic life (but probably many more) where you will find yourself taking a portrait. Taking pictures of people is much different than beautiful mountains, scenic oceanscapes, historic architecture, butterflies, plates of food, or whatever it is that you usually...

Connect smartphone reviews are written with the needs of photographers in mind. We focus on camera features, performance and image quality. Introduction The Xperia Z2 is Sony’s latest flagship Android smartphone and a solid upgrade to its predecessor, the Xperia Z1. However, overall the changes between the two models are more evolutionary than revolutionary. At 5.2 inches, the Z2’s 1080p display is slightly larger than the Z1’s 5-inch screen and so are the dimensions, but overall the design with front and back glass panels encased in an aluminium frame...

Profoto, the Swedish flash manufacturer, has confirmed that a Nikon compatible TTL remote will be available for its popular B1 off-camera flash on September 15th – just in time for Photokina. The Air Remote TTL-N will give Nikon photographers the same TTL functionality enjoyed by Canon shooters with its Air Remote TTL-C since the November 2013 launch of the B1 flash. The B1 is an exclusively battery-powered flash that’s capable of delivering 500Ws of power, roughly equivalent to the output of ten average speedlights. The wireless TTL capability of the B1 is what sets it apart...

Sony doesn’t have a legacy in terms of lenses and especially users like Canon, Nikon does. For instance, Sony have had done nice & innovative cameras long before they decided to go the DSLR way – when they bought Konica Minolta in 2006, and also adopted their A-Mount to their own line of DSLRs. Sony doesn’t have the legacy since the 50’s, 60’s…and is mostly being known as a electronic concern, that does stuff like walkman back into the 70’s. But for instance, Sony have had a long term cooporation with Zeiss, even before 2006 for years. Sony...
