A Post By: John Davenport One key to a successful photograph is that it directs the viewer’s attention towards the subject in question. There are many ways that this can be achieved through composition and lightning in the field, but did you know, you can also direct the attention of your viewer’s eyes through post-production? You still need an interesting subject for this to work, as directing your viewer’s eyes to a boring location within a frame is still going to result in a boring photograph. For the sake of this tutorial I’ll be using this photograph of an abandoned utility...

The new A5100 looks like a winner – basically a A6000 without EVF. i’d have loved a mag-alloy body, but even the A6000 is made out of plastic, that wasn’t possible, especially for the asking price. Besides that, the Alpha 5000 incl. the “infamous” 16-50 PZ Kit Lens costs here in germany (18.8. online price check) 379 EUR only, and the Alpha 6000 with the same Kitlens goes for 679 EUR here – so the A5100 Kit must be cheaper. Hopefully, in one year or less the A5100 doesn’t cost more than 400 Bucks with PZ Lens. Update: The A5100 with 16-50 PZ...

Sad to see they made the same cockup with the positinging of the NFC chip that they made on the A6000, where it doesn’t work for tablets, because the neck strap mount gets in the way and prevents the tablet getting close to the chip. it really needs to be on the underside, or the strap mount redesigned. Sony has announce its new Alpha a5100 mirrorless camera, which takes the ‘guts’ from the a6000 and puts it into the compact body inherited from the NEX-5 line. The a5100 offers the same 24.3MP sensor with on-chip phase detection as the a6000, along with a 3″ LCD that flips up 180 degrees for taking self-portraits. The a5100 has impressive video features for its price, including support for the XAVC S codec, which allows for 1080/60p/24p recording at 50Mbps. The a5100 will be available in your choice of black or white next month for $550 body only or $700 with the 16-50mm...

agree.star-trails belie shortcomings of still needing longer exposures of cameras faring poorly at higher ISOs so lower ISOs are used instead (pp stacking cheats not permitted) sensor development should be pushed so bright starry blue-sky moonlit earth landscapes can be single exposed for stills at under 4s, under 1s, etc, with ultra-clean noiseless high ISOs (even with smaller aperture diameters, say 3mm, etc, not always wide open). it would then lend itself more readily to landscape portraitures under the night starry moonlit skies am I the only one doing such outdoor astro-lunar earth...

A Post By: Andrew S. Gibson If you want to obtain accurate colours in your photos in Lightroom (or indeed any other software), no matter what you may read elsewhere, you need to calibrate your computer monitor. If you don’t, the colours in your photos won’t be accurate, and you will never produce a print (or any other form of output, such as a Blurb book) that matches the colours on your screen. If you undertake client work, or sell your photos through stock libraries, it is essential to calibrate your monitor so that you know the colours of your photo are as intended. The reason for...

I was feeling a little blue this week myself after hearing about the passing of Robin Williams. Sad that someone who brought so much joy to so many, had so little in his own life. But I don’t want you to be that kind of blue! Weekly photography challenge – blue This week I want you to get out and notice anything and everything around you that is blue. Then – photograph it and share it with us here. Nature provides lots of...

A copy of one of the largest interchangeable lenses for SLRs ever produced has emerged for sale second-hand at a UK retailer. Canon’s massive EF 1200mm f/5.6 L USM is a rare beast, and the longest lens in the world with AF. MPB Photographic describes it as being in mint condition and has priced the lens at £99,000. The lens was in production for a limited time in the ’90s, and it’s not known exactly how many copies are in existence. According B&H, which also came into possession of a copy of the lens in 2009, it’s rumored that there are around 20. The lens weighs...

A Post By: Barry J Brady A stitched panorama in a city can make a great scene! Many of us live in cities nowadays, in fact almost 80% of the world’s population lives in, or near, a large city. While it is fantastic to be out in nature, photographing the remote seascape scenes or the snow capped mountains, that is not possible for most photographers, everyday. That might mean that you don’t photograph for weeks at a time. As you probably know by now, to make big improvements in your photography you need to practice, practice, and practice some more. Living in a city has its own scenes...

A Post By: Ausaaf Ahmad Among the many tips and tricks new photographers get with regards to lighting, the time of day is an essential concept, which for getting some shots of landscapes and some dynamic shots of natural light and artificial light, is the time at dusk or dawn. This time is just before the appearance of the sun or just after it, when the light is soft enough to emphasize most of the dark of the scene, and yet not so dark that it necessitates the use of additional light source. This is a guide to Blue Hour, that natural time frame which is so poplar among photographers. What...

A Post By: Kav Dadfar As a travel photographer it can be incredibly frustrating and stressful when you have limited time somewhere and you are hit with overcast, or even rainy days. This happened to me recently when on a five day trip in a national park. I had four days of grey skies and constant rain. It can be difficult to keep yourself motivated, so here are a few tips on what to photograph, or what you can do instead on overcast or rainy days. Edit, caption and add metadata to photos If you are on an assignment or are planning to send images to a stock library, then every image needs to...

A Post By: Helen Bradley If you use filters in Photoshop CS6, Creative Cloud (CC) or CC2014 you may notice that some of your old favorites are missing. Some (sadly) are gone forever, and others are just less easy to find. So, here’s what you need to know about the filters that are gone, how to make those that are hidden more accessible and why that might be important. Going…Going…Gone! First to Photoshop CC 2014. Gone from this version is the Oil Paint Filter. This was the sole remaining filter left when support for the Pixel Bender plug-in was removed from Photoshop CS6. Also gone...

Drobo Mini RAID$419 / £263 (without drives) www.drobo.com “Too much storage” is a phrase that does not exist in photography. Those who work with RAW files and high-definition videos know that every gigabyte is sacred, and most likely have an arsenal of external hard drives gobbling up the open areas on their desks. This is a predicament I’ve found myself in as well, but just in time, before I ran out of desk space entirely, the folks at Drobo sent me one of their Drobo Mini ($419 without drives) models to try out. Samsung has evolved into Apple’s main rival in the smartphone world for good reason. The Korean manufacturer’s high-end models are usually among the best in terms of both features and performance. However, there has been one constant point of criticism: the Galaxy devices’ plastic shells tend to look a little cheap next to the metal and glass competition from HTC, Sony and Apple. To address that point, and no doubt with the upcoming iPhone 6 in mind, Samsung has today announced the Galaxy Alpha - the first Galaxy smartphone with a metal frame. With its 4.7-inch...

A Post By: Mike Newton I recently bought a Sony A7 to compliment my Canon 6D DSLR. A friend convinced me that having small-form, full frame camera would be an entire different way of shooting. I value his opinion, so I picked one up. You can see how I used it in my last article:  when to trick your camera for the perfect exposure. A New Love of Prime Lenses I started off with a Sony 55mm f/1.8 and a 24-70mm f/2.8 lens that requires a Sony adapter. The 55mm shoots like a dream and is insanely light-weight. The 24-70mm and adapter are super heavy and ridiculously front-heavy. It’s a...

A Post By: James Maher If you do portraiture of any kind you are probably used to people giving one look when the camera is away from them and another when it is on them. This is the unfortunate game of the portrait photographer. For my own work, I find that many of the most poignant portraits of people are the ones in between the actual ‘portraits’ taken during a session. These are the moments when your subject is at ease, in their element, thinking about something, and when they have the most interesting expressions. So how do you capture these and take better portraits? There is an...

These photos are great, but I wish the Wx Channel would do weather again, like they used to back in the 1980/90’s. Now they do almost everything but weather. I’ve been trying to petition them to develop a W2 channel for weather only, like MTV was supposed to do with MTV2 back in the day. Fortunately, I can get all my pertinent wx info on smartphone apps now… That last photo looks like it was taken in the neighborhood of Microsoft’s “Bliss” photo. Source Article from...

I guess the revelation for me was not that more pixels give you more options – as you say, that’s pretty obvious – but that the camera that provides them isn’t fatally compromised – for this sort of work – in other areas in order to achieve the detail. It could easily have been – slower AF, lower frame-rate, smaller buffer – but in practice they’re all good enough – if not, obviously, best-in-class. The large file sizes could have been a deal breaker, too. It does have a negative impact on workflow and without the ability to save...

A Post By: Omar Zenhom Referrals are an incredibly effective way to build your business and get great clients. Referred clients are often more loyal, consistent, more suited to work with you and they often send more referrals your way. How do I know this? By Leo Reynolds Referrals work – but have a system My partner Nicole and I have gotten 80% of our videography work from referrals. And it didn’t happen by accident, we created a system that ensures we don’t have to go out looking for our next gig. A system that we created at the start to have referral clients reaching out to us with...

Microsoft’s Research division in Redmond, Washington has published material detailing a method for turning shaky first-person camera footage into a stabilized hyperlapse video. Hyperlapsing is a technique used in multimedia to string together a collection of photographs or video frames in order to produce a cinematic experience; the methodology is also more commonly known as a stop-motion time-lapse. Microsoft researchers, Johannes Kopf, Michael Cohen, and Richard Szeliski, all noted that first-person video cameras could capture interesting footage during activities such as...

A Post By: Anup Ghimire There are lots of tools in Photoshop that are sometimes a bit confusing due to the similar nature of their functionality. With subtle differences, these tools have been a topic of confusion between a lot of Photoshop enthusiasts. In this article I am going to share a distinction between Fill and Opacity, the Healing brush and Stamp tool, and “Merge Visible†and “Flatten imageâ€. I hope it will help you one understand these tool a little better. Fill versus Opacity Both Fill and Opacity control the transparency of a layer. They work exactly same except for the...

A Post By: Shiv Verma Time-lapse photography shows you events that occur over an extended period that are captured on camera and shown in a relatively short time. Time-lapse imagery is the capture of individual images of a subject at preset intervals over a preset duration. These individual images are then combined using software, thereby compressing the event into a much shorter time span. If you were to witness an ice cube melting it would take an hour or more. With time-lapse the process from solid to liquid could be seen in seconds. What do you need to do time-lapse photography?...

In this article I’d like to talk about an Aurora shot I achieved using a special technique. I took the image during the first of two ‘Land of Ice‘ photo workshops I guided in Southern Iceland earlier this year. I was leading the group when we arrived at Iceland famous glacier lagoon, Jökulsárlón. ‘Flames of the North’. Jökulsárlón, Iceland, January 2014 The sky was mostly clear and the Northern Lights were starting to pick up about an hour after arrival. We set up our cameras, found compositions and started a long, spectacular shoot. Somewhere in the...

A Post By: Ry Sangalang You may already have your own method of effectively shooting cloud photos. If so then you understand that conditions may vary greatly. Some days, your photos may turn out happy and light. On other days they may turn out dull and grey. However, there are at least three techniques you might consider in order to capture better sky and cloud photos. Shoot when the sun is brightest and cloud movement is dynamic The best time to photograph an epic cloud shot is when the sun is at its brightest and is directly appearing and disappearing from behind the clouds. The above...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt By Andreas-photography There are many different types of light modifiers on the market. The two most common are umbrellas and softboxes. So when might you choose each? These videos will give you a look at the umbrella versus softbox debate and information on the difference between the two, what they do, and which one to use. This first one by Phlearn shows a few options and talks about the relative size and distance to your subject as well. EyeEm, a photo sharing platform and image marketplace, has released an update to its iOS app which takes it closer to the recently-overhauled Android version. The redesign attempts to put more focus on the images by changing font sizes and moving controls around, and the new EyeZoom feature lets you zoom into images by tapping on them. For this purpose a higher-resolution version of each image is loaded in the background. The menu also got a redesign and you’ll now get access to all major image categories in the same place: photos of your friends, your own profile, the...

graybalanced: Right but this album cover is daylight and shot with low ISO film. That’s where film is still strong in the year 2014. Unless you want to shoot Foveon and that new sensor still drops of in usefulness above ISO 400. Yep, digital allows the shooting with no flash in much more varied circumstances than film. Has been true of APSC sensors since at least as far back as 2004, and there was big leap with the mass adoption of CMOS sensors and the introduction of the Nikon D3. Still not much to to with why the colour in this photo is so good. There are plenty of current, year...

A Post By: Andrew Faulk In an industry where marketing strategy and professional branding are needed to survive and to “make it†fiscally, we are missing something that should define our artistic craft. Just like in any other industry, collaboration is not an ideal that limits photographers, but one that can propel us personally and professionally. Understanding that photography is not usually seen as a “team sportâ€, how can we collaborate with each other while retaining our individuality as visual artists? Here are 8 ways to work with other photographers #1 Photos – create...

A Post By: Lynsey Mattingly I like photographers. Some of my favorite people and closest friends are photographers. In general, I find us to be a likeable bunch: witty, intelligent, wildly attractive. I also find that we reside in a grey area where we aren’t quite regarded as artists. We are the redheaded stepchildren of the art world, and I can say that because I both am a redheaded stepchild and have a redheaded stepchild. Truth be known, she is the easiest kid of the bunch. She pulls no punches, just tells it like it is. Much like photography. But we are artists! As much as any painter...

that’s why i love old mf lenses – metal lens barrel, and no build-in af motor, ultrasonic or whatever, nothing really that could get broken within decades, if you handle your lenses carefully, they’d last a lifetime…and perhaps your grandchildren would love to use them. 🙂 besides that, i’ve read some time ago, the zoom lens class 70-200mm is the one which get broken seriously too often within a couple years, i can’t verify this, because i don’t own a zoom lens of that range and/or type. We were not too impressed with results from the HTC One M8’s Duo Cam in our review,  but nevertheless, its secondary camera for capturing depth information and itscorresponding features make the HTC one of the more interesting smartphone cameras released so far in 2014. One of Duo Cam’s limitations has been that the editing features, such as UFocus for changing the focus point after capture or Foregrounder for applying effects to the back- or foreground of an image, could only be used on the device itself. This has changed with the latest update to the HTC Gallery App...

I did anticipate some off-beat replies when I made my original post but not quite so many comments! First off, thanks to those who pointed out this update is available for Mountain Lion. I must have misread that. Second, Mavericks is a 5.7GB file. In the real world, away from concrete cities, that is a major download which can take a day or more, plenty of time for something to corrupt. Not even remotely trivial. Especially if you are brave enough to chance your arm at “updating” all the software which is Mavericks-only. Lastly, I totally agree that 10.6.8 was almost perfect....

The GH4 is superior to its very capable sibling FZ1000. Its autofocus is better, for one thing. It also has more features. The FZ1000 doesn’t have touch screen, a headphone jack, etc. As for 4K, 4K capture is better for 1080p output than mere 1080p capture, not only because of the cropping, zooming, and stabilizing options but also because of the Nyquist Theorum. To make the most of 1080p, you need to sample twice the information (UHD). The GH2, even hacked, can’t resolve as much detail or give as much color information. It’s possible that, for a given set of needs or...

This is a popular misconception by bloggers: they think that they have the right to copy anyone’s art, just because they found it on the internet, which is very far from the truth. The copyright stays with the creator, no matter who published it on the net, unless the copyright owner has sold the rights outright. Did Slater offer a banana in exchange of the camera, one wonders?! Evidently, copyright law isn’t totally up-to-date when it comes to pictures taken by machines (like a camera onboard a RC plane), animals, or whatever. There have been many cases of animals, like gulls...

A Post By: Stephen Trainor The Photographer’s Ephemeris for Desktop: All Change! Some important news for users of The Photographer’s Ephemeris (TPE) for Desktop: on 2 September 2014, Google will switch off the Google Maps for Flash API. On that date TPE for Desktop will stop working. When TPE for Desktop was first launched in 2009, we still lived in a pre-iPad world and Steve Jobs had yet to write his thoughts on Flash. Building on Adobe AIR provided a convenient cross-platform technology that allowed users on Windows, Mac and Linux to run the same application. Since then, the popularity...

A Post By: Alex Morrison Have you ever “hit the wall†with your photography? Do you sometimes get the feeling your images aren’t improving as much, or as fast as you’d like? Have you ever thought about what you must do to cross that chasm from being a pretty good photographer to being a WOW photographer? Is this a WOW shot or not? How do you know? ONE SKILL FITS ALL There’s really only one ability that you need to develop to help you advance your talents, and it will serve you well in any creative pursuit, not just your photography. This skill is reflection. No, not THAT kind of...

If you park your car at a Walmart parking lot, and while in shopping, a meteorite falls on and destroys your car, your first instinct may be to sue Walmart (the thinking goes along the lines of, “I just lost my $20k car… that’s not fair; someone has to pay for it; Walmart should pay, they have enough money). However, it would not be Walmart’s fault. The moral of the story is, sometimes in life bad/unfortunate things happen that aren’t any person’s fault. You just have to accept the blows you are dealt. Mr. Slater is mad because he spenyt all that money to...

A Post By: Leah O’Connell “I swear, the walls were white!†you exclaim as you look through indoor photos taken from an earlier shoot, that now appear to have an annoying yellow tint over everything. Sound familiar? Don’t worry, you’re not crazy. This is a common frustration, photographers of all experience levels face due to what’s referred to as “color castingâ€. Color casting is simply the effect of light striking different surfaces and bouncing back other colors into your camera’s sensor. Though annoying, it’s also relatively unavoidable without careful calculation...

A Post By: Richard Taylor You don’t need to take expensive and exotic trips to make good images. So if staying at home is more your thing then a few simple ideas can help you create beautiful images. What you might view as commonplace and bland can still be photographed in an imaginative and skillful way to produce an image that shows a far more striking aspect of the subject or scene. I am not suggesting you get all creative with software manipulation either. I am suggesting explore your imagination and creativity; perhaps push your technical boundaries a little and this will further...

Despite the ubiquity of GoPro’s diminutive ‘action cam’ video solutions, the company has reported a loss of $19.8 million for the second quarter following an additional loss of $5.1 million from the year prior. GoPro first went public in June of this year, and while shares have dropped a whopping 11-15% following the financial results, everything is not necessarily doom and gloom for the company. Second-quarter profits of 8 cents a share actually exceeded analysts’ expectations of 7 cents a share while, similarly, the company explains that the losses themselves were...

According to the announcement the Vibe Z2 Pro captures images with a 16MP camera that features an optical image stabilization system. There is also a Dual-LED flash but unfortunately no information on sensor size or aperture has been released yet. Camera functions include Auto Scene Detection and a so-called Ultra Night Mode but to many mobile photographers, Pro Mode, which allows for manual control over a range of shooting parameters,...

A Post By: Barry J Brady In a scene like this, you want all the trees in focus, a deep depth of field is necessary There are many written and unwritten “rules†in Photography. Mostly, they are guidelines, I am not sure that there are rules about any art form, but some guidelines help us out. You have probably heard of the rule of thirds as it relates to composition. You have heard about the golden mean for composition, but have you thought about how depth of field affects your composition? Composition is one of the easiest techniques to use to improve your images, it is also one of the...

A Post By: Bruce Wunderlich You may have heard it said that when you change the way you see – the things you see begin to change. Legendary American documentary photographer and photojournalist, Dorothea Lange once said that “The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera.†In this article we are going to use our camera to learn how to see. Become color blind When it comes to photography, color can attract your eye so readily that it can often disguise poor composition. Black and white photography depends totally on composition, so in order to compose...

I always get a kick out of the comments at DPR. There are those from obvious fan-people, unable to even acknowledge that another brand might offer any advantages at all, and come up with a multitude of ways to ignore obvious facts. Then there are those who think that a camera is defined by one feature or measurement, be it sensor size, low light performance, AF speed, or something else. This group probably overlaps greatly with the fan-people. And those who seem to understand that a camera is really a system, made up of many parts, but think that what’s important to them in a system...

Whether it be done by hand with physical media or by digital, the compositions are excellent, the technique, exquisitely handled. Exquisite eye candy belittles it but it is very pleasant and very well done. I don’t get any messages here (which is Ok, because not all art requires a concept) but I do enjoy it! 🙂 Seems more (entirely?) about technique than subject matter, but I don’t know the artist and what he’s trying to express if anything. Its not quite David Hockney’s “Pear Blossom Highway” using lots of polaroids to make up pieces of one scene. There...
