A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt Recently we ran an article on – Updating your Camera’s Firmware – What is it and Why it’s Important. Funny thing is, I had never updated mine on any camera up to that point. As I edited and read the article I figured, yeah I guess I should do that. So I went ahead and updated the firmware on my Canon 5D Mark III. Battery Failure What happened is that my Canon batteries continued to work just fine. I went away to Oregon for 3.5 weeks and took three batteries with me – should be plenty right? Wrong! One ran down so I went to switch and got an error...

A Post By: Helen Bradley If you’re looking to use some creative enhancements on your photos in Photoshop CS6 or CC then the new Color Lookup adjustment is one to consider. The Color Lookup adjustment is used to remap the colors in an image to a set of colors that comes pre-configured and stored inside a color table file. Color Tables are used primarily with film but they are also useful for applying creative coloring to photos. You don’t need to know anything about color tables to use this feature, as is a default set of color tables in Photoshop that you can use. Better still, if you...

To me, exceptionally creative. I’ve done a fair amount of Photoshopping, and some composites with layers. However, I think it would be very time consuming to accomplish the effect with layers, so that it had the same look. So yes, it would save paper. But … my speculation is that the actual art work would have a very, very different feel, in person. We have to use our imagination from the small JPEG’s from DPR to visualize the real art. There would also be a “tactile texture” as you handled it, that would be missing from a 2D print. Source Article from...

A Post By: Christina Peters White Balance (WB) is one of the most challenging camera settings for beginners to learn. White Balance can also be difficult to fix later when you are shooting in JPG format. In this post I’m going to discuss what WB is and how to use it properly when shooting JPGs. I am a food photographer, but keep in mind the WB principals apply the same way, to anything you are shooting. The image on the left has a cooler, or bluer, color temperature than the image on the right. White Balance is one of the most important camera settings because it hugely affects how the...

A Post By: Prathap DK Have you ever been disappointed when browsing through the bird photographs in your own portfolio? I was, in fact many times! Even today I get disappointed to see several of my own bird photographs and keep thinking why did I take that photograph in the first place? In most cases, the reason for failure of not appealing bird photographs is the boring or distracting background. Take a look at your portfolio again and see if the culprit is the background. You will be surprised, shocked, and probably start thinking why did I take this photograph? What was in my mind? The...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt The collection of images this week that I rounded up were on the theme “goldenâ€. That is a bit open for interpretation. So let’s do just that, shall we, and make it this week’s photography challenge as well. Weekly Photography Challenge – Golden So what does that mean to you? What do you imagine in your head at the mention of the word? Do you take it literally and think of the color gold? How about an award or trophy? Many months ago I came across an article interviewing Canon execs in the financial press – Bloomberg?, Financial Times?, I don’t recall, but at one point they emphasized thin profits in photography and a strategic turn to the profitable and underserved security camera market…In other words, Canon is abandoning photographers for warehouse owners and anti-terrorist subway monitoring. OK- their corp, their game.To my assessment it correlates with the glaring lack of advanced, competitive product. I call it Sony time! Source Article from...

beavertown: You’re deluding yourself if you think the Nikon’s sensor doesn’t come real close to the image quality from the Samsung. (Again I have raws from both and I like the Samsung.) Now, the best Samsung lenses are better than the best Nikon lenses, but the Samsung 9mm lens isn’t a great lens, and almost no one has used the 17mm lens. The kitzoom is good. Right about price, but differences in price are not the same as differences in image quality. So look at raws shot with various lenses, and skip the pricing thing when making IQ claims. I agree with you, Ron. Canada Post has an excellent reputation here in Canada and the rest of the world. To isolate one incident and have it reflect poorly on us is simply not fair. All that said, it’s smart to always carry insurance on shipped items of value. When I sell something through Ebay, for instance, I insist that the buyer buys extra insurance (usually only $1 for $100 coverage) no matter where in the world it goes. I’m sure that LensRentals has the same policy — they’d be fools not to. I’ve never had a mistake happen, but that doesn’t mean that...

Canon India has posted a teaser on its Facebook page showing a 1-series DSLR alongside the words ‘Get your camera ready, something BIG is coming’. Being a teaser rather than a leak, the meaning of the post is open to interpretation, although ‘get your camera ready’ suggests that the new product might be a lens, rather than the 7D Mark II which a lot of you (as well as us) were probably hoping for. Our money is on a redesigned version of the venerable 100-400mm F4.5–5.6L IS USM zoom which was released in 1998 and has looked ripe for replacement for some time...

A Post By: Monica Day You’ve figured out that photography is awesome. You have your equipment. You’ve got the basics down. You know all about the “triangle†of ISO, shutter speed, and aperture. Now, you’re ready to put them to use. You’re ready to go outside and experiment. But wait. You haven’t yet considered the weather. This is a little side note to photography that we often forget about. If you’re not shooting in a studio, then the weather will definitely be a factor to consider when going out on a shoot. There are a few basic weather scenarios that you will surely...

A Post By: Simon Ringsmuth Have you ever returned to your computer with a memory card full of photos and become overwhelmed at the idea of going through all of them? The thought of sorting and analyzing so many pictures can seem so daunting it’s sometimes hard to even know where to start! Often we find ourselves copying the contents of our cameras to our computers and letting our precious memories collect digital dust, though we promise ourselves we will get around to organizing them – someday. Modern technology has made this task easier, with various software and cloud-based services...

I beg to differ, my dear DigiMatt.Actually the film used to shoot movies was 35mm, yes, but not the same kind as the one used on 35mm cameras. The 35mm motion pictures film has a black coating on the back of it, impeding regular 35mm labs to develop it. It would leave a grease black sediment in the tanks. This film is also not balanced for daylight, it is tungsten balanced. Don’t ask me why. It comes in 100 foot rolls. back in the day, there was only a lab, in Hollywood, Florida, who bought large amounts of left overs from that film from the movie industry and offered prints, negs...

@HowaboutRAWThe A7/R/S Series use a 11+7bit Delta compression in RAW terms, for myself, i’d be happier with a true 14bit lossless or lossy RAW compression –but let’s face it – it seems almost *all* current Sony DSLR/DSLMs are using that kind of delta RAW compression – and you just can’t say that the results into RAW from the A7/R/S or A77, II & A99 are just bad, period – no offence.I’m happy with my A3000, NEX5 & A7 series with the RAW results, into the end, the picture, composition counts, not any technical camera specs onto paper. I agree they need more lenses. OTOH, I am, personally, quite interested in seeing what SLT can do for AF by allowing for communication btwn the image and AF sensors. On-sensor PDAF has some advantages, as well as some disadvantages, as it’s currently implemented in most systems. So on-sensor PDAF – today – isn’t the end all be all of AF. Hence the investment in SLT as an alternative. It remains to be seen which system works best, depending on your application. Objective AF tracking tests are difficult. I can say that I’m personally trying out both the SLT system...

Declarative Programming And The Web By Scott Reynen July 30th, 2014 APICode 0 Comments Like most web developers, I spend my days giving instructions to computers. These instructions generally involve some input (a request for a web page), some logic (get the right content from a database) and some output (send the content to the requesting browser). This process of telling a computer how to perform a task, such as generating a web page, is what we commonly call “programming,†but it’s only a subset of programming: imperative programming. There’s another type of programming,...

A Post By: Francesco Gola In the past few years, thanks to the diffusion of useful accessories and photographic filters with good quality and low prices, the technique of long exposure has become increasingly popular among photography enthusiasts. Even if this technique can be used both in studio and in a urban environment, the perfect playground of long exposures is landscape photography. Unfortunately often it happens that the result we get is far from our expectations, and we end up classifying the long exposure as a demoniacal technique. However, following this step-by-step guide to long...

A Post By: Melinda Smith If you have ever tried to get a three year old to sit still for longer than a nanosecond you know what a challenge it can be to get that “perfect†photo. Well, I’m going to be real here, who wants that perfect photo anyway? Okay, I know you may, but maybe I can convince you to let that go. My favorite photos are always the true ones; the ones that make you smile when you look at them, or maybe even cry a tear or two. Sure, it’s nice to get that beautiful portrait, but which photo is going to help you truly remember the fiery three year old who gave you...

Recently we have seen several photo sharing sites venture into the photo licensing and stock image business, for example 500px with its Prime program and EyeEm with its Marketplace and a cooperation with Getty Images. Getty itself updated its iOS apps in order to prepare itself better for the growing competition in the mobile stock photo market. However, long before smartphone images were accepted by stock agencies Yahoo-owned Flickr started its own cooperation with Getty via the Flickr Collection, allowing its members to monetize their images by offering them for licensing. Now...

Selling The Value Of The Web To Small-Town Clients By Trevan Hetzel July 29th, 2014 BusinessClientsMarketing 1 Comment Selling your services as a freelancer or a small shop is tough enough as it is. Selling to a small-town business that might not even see the need for a website adds an extra level of difficulty in turning a profit. I’ve provided web design services to small-town businesses for the past few years, having had many happy outcomes, but also a lot of negative experiences from which I’ve learned hard lessons. One of the most important things I’ve learned is how to sell the...

How Limitations Led To My Biggest App Store Success and Failure By Ben Johnson July 28th, 2014 AppsCase StudiesiOS 4 Comments Look at your calendar. If you’re anything like me, all you see are meetings, places to go, things to do, people to meet and not a lot of white space. Few people love their calendar. So, we set out to change that, and we learned a lot in the process. Our app is an iPhone app that flips your calendar upside down and lets you focus on the free time in your day, instead of all the busy time. The app itself has been around since 2011, but the story of how it came to be...

A Post By: Phillip VanNostrand What is it? What does it do? What’s it good for? This piece of equipment replaces the light stand with something much more flexible – your hands! Yes, you can mount the grip onto a light stand, but the best part is having the mobility and freedom of using it with your hands. As far as I know, there is no other thing out there that does that, exactly like this. And it holds an umbrella. It’s an ergonomic solution to the mobile problem of traveling light and easy. As my mentor was saying, his assistant was doing the same thing but with a monopod or a...

A Post By: Phillip VanNostrand The only three lenses you need for travel photography anywhere in the world are a fisheye lens, a 50mm, and a 135mm (or similar telephoto). You can agree and finish this article right here, or you can read on to see exactly why I would choose only these three lenses to take with me anywhere in the world. Night shot from atop a bridge in Moscow, using the Canon fisheye 15mm f/2.8 Before I say anything else, the fisheye I have in mind has an aperture of f/2.8, the 50mm has an aperture of f/1.4, and the 135 has an aperture of f/2.0. Popular, cheaper variations on...

A Post By: Sarah Hipwell The recent release of Adobe Photoshop Creative Cloud (CC) 2014 (which is the 15th release of the product) got me thinking about my own workflow. Photoshop is an amazing piece of software. I have been using it commercially since version 5. However, I don’t necessarily think the latest version is the best one. I’ve just recently upgraded to CS6 and I’m loving it but I can’t see myself going the CC route just yet, as it doesn’t suit my business model. The beauty of this software is the power that it can bring to your images, but it is a complex piece of...

J: I’m quite familiar with NoScript, and I use it almost all of the time. Adblock doesn’t work that way. And the fact that you bring it up here tells me you aren’t real familiar with it. This problem of misdirection to GearCrap is misdirection to the wrong effing website upon sign-in; that’s significantly different than an ad in an annoying location. Also why should I have to use a a PC? Is it the year 1997? Does this website only work one way and only with one OS? Do you not know that Firefox, including Noscript, also runs a on a Mac? There’s also a version of...

Canon has introduced a pair of budget-friendly superzooms: the PowerShot SX400 IS and SX520 HS. These cameras have 24-720mm and 24-1008mm equivalent lenses, respectively. The SX400 sports a 16MP CCD and 720p video, while the SX520 uses a CMOS sensor (likely BSI) that can produce Full HD movies. Canon claims that autofocus performance has been improved on both models compared with their predecessors. You’ll be able to pick up the SX400 IS in August for $249.99, with the SX520 HS following in September for $399.99. Jump to: Press Release Specifications Press Release: Latest PowerShot...

Pelican Imaging has released a set of re-focusable pictures taken with its light field camera for smartphones. Light field technology is back in the headlines, following Lytro’s latest offering, the Illum. Pelican Imaging, though, is taking a slightly different approach from Lytro: instead of placing an array of microlenses between the sensor and the main lens, Pelican uses an array of main lenses – each with a sensor behind it. And while the idea of a multi-camera array is not particularly new (a Stanford research group* previously developed something similar), this is...

He is obviously in Germany. I’m sure he meant to say that it is sad that it is not in, instead of into, Germany. Obviously he does want to see it but seeing that it is an American plane, a Boeing, and not an Airbus, it is rightly located in America, away from his easy access. Wasn’t hard to figure out. I don’t know why you felt the need to say that Airbus is not German when obviously Germany is a part of it. Not understanding your irony comment. What does Northrop Grumman have to do with the topic or anything said? That said, and in fact, Airbus planes, unlike...

A Post By: Mike Newton I bought the Sony A7 camera recently and have been taking it out quite a bit to get a feel for it. My wife is starting a fashion blog so I thought I would take her out for a fashion shoot at the beach. I was shooting a high-contrast scene and realized. . . The camera doesn’t always know what’s best Your camera always has the best intentions, but it doesn’t always get it right. Sometimes the sensor will think you want to expose a scene one way when you actually want it to expose it another. I’ll show you an example. I put the camera on aperture priority and shot...

Times change and yet they don’t. Externally, the jets of 1969 and 2014 look about the same and cruise at about the same speeds. Some features of the engines, circuitry, and navigation have changed, but much of the air control sytems in Aurora, Illinois have changed little since 1969, and we still depend flight tracking on a “black box” crash data recovery technology that cry for an update. Ticketing, fuel consumption, and tarmac logistics are probabably much more efficient than in 1969, despite vast increases in volume, but the cost of security has skyrocketed, and baggage...

A Post By: Meredith Clark When it comes to creating family photo albums, there can be a tendency to create a book filled with your family’s “greatest hitsâ€, the best moments of the year, if you will. Of course, those special moments like birthdays, vacations, and that one perfect Christmas card photo are important to include, but for most of us, they really don’t do a good job of capturing the little moments that make up the majority of our lives. The other day, I was looking through a photo album with my four-year-old daughter Lizzy. As usual she skipped right past all the formal...

DP, it’s nice you have a “full screen” mode, even though it’s not that much bigger for some of these shots. But for most photo web sites I know, you can scroll through the pics while in that display mode. Making users go back to the tiny display between each shot is bad usability. I don’t mean to complain, but these shots deserve to be displayed properly. Source Article from...

British photographer Kris Boorman summited Mount Fuji in 2012 and took a photograph from the top, showing the shadow cast by the giant mountain at sunrise. The image has since been used as a background for the Bing search engine and last year won a competition held by Gettty Images. A couple of days ago he posted the photo at low resolution on Reddit, and within a few hours it had garnered more than 6000 upvotes. Although this might sound like good news, Boorman quickly came to regret posting the picture. In a follow-up post on Reddit (since edited and republished by PetaPixel) Boorman...

Everyone loves the look of a nice out of focus background, but it’s hard to achieve in a home studio. Accessory manufacturer Lastolite believes it might have the solution, with two new reversible backgrounds printed with out of focus images of a seascape / autumn foliage and summer foliage / city lights. Measuring 1.5 x 1.2m (4′ x 5′) the backgrounds are big enough for almost full-length portraits of most adults, and weigh in at 3kg (6.6lb) each. There are two ‘Out of Focus’ backgrounds available, featuring autumn foliage / seascape (pictured here) and...

Social Influence: Incorporating Social Identity Theory Into Design By Victor Yocco July 25th, 2014 PsychologyUser ExperienceUser Research 0 Comments No person is immune from the influence of the people and groups they encounter. As much as we would like to think that every thought we have is original, that every opinion we express is informed by facts alone, the truth is that we use others around us as a reference point for much of our attitudes and behavior. This isn’t a bad thing; it’s human nature. Knowing how groups influence people can help you to move from being a common, everyday,...

A Post By: Leo Edwards When you first start experimenting with lighting it’s easy to become overwhelmed. Never has the old expression K.I.S.S. (keep it simple stupid) been more appropriate. The most important step is to master what you can achieve with one light source before you start adding others. Besides, what you CAN achieve with only one light source, used correctly, is quite remarkable. For this article I have delved into my back catalogue and sourced images that were shot with a single speedlight off-camera. I hate carrying tons of equipment and even now, for 80% of my commercial...

A Post By: Dave Seeram As the Editor-in-Chief of CLARITY, I believe that photography is one of the most unique forms of visual art. As a photographer, you must possess an ability to express yourself visually and also be technically proficient with the tools of your craft. Thankfully, the technology is relatively simple to understand. Given a small amount of time, anyone can master the mechanics of their DSLR very quickly. I’m referring to the technical side of photography, or more specifically, how to use your camera. I’m sure you’ll agree, digital SLR cameras are pretty appealing...

Many modern digital cameras can be remote controlled via dedicated apps on your smartphone and a Wi-Fi link. Unfortunately this option is not available on older or lower spec models that come without a built-in Wi-Fi module. However, as so often help is at hand via accessory makers and a range of third-party Wi-Fi controllers with varying feature sets, such as Camera Mator or Triggertrap, are available. CASE Remote now offers a new option. The first version of the device, simply called CASE, started out as a successful Indiegogo campaign, and the upgraded version, CASE Remote...

“Making It Rightâ€: A New Smashing Book on Product Management For A Startup World By Vitaly Friedman July 24th, 2014 Smashing Books 0 Comments You’ve seen this happen a thousand times. An organization struggles with a high level of internal enthusiasm and creative chaos that team leaders don’t know how to handle any more. To bring order into projects, a new product manager is appointed, under huge expectation, and with unclear responsibilities and big goals defined within a very short timeframe. That’s when things usually go south, resulting in failed projects, crushed teams and...

A Post By: Daniel Korzeniewski There is no such thing as bad light, there is just light. Take advantage of every situation. Photography is all about the light. In fact, if there is no light hitting the sensor, there is no photo. Different times of the day, or weather conditions, can create different moods and situations. As you probably know, you can achieve amazing and compelling results by shooting in the early morning, or from late afternoon well into twilight. This is known as the golden hour and the blue hour, respectively. However, there is no such thing as good light or bad light,...

A Post By: Andrew S. Gibson In my previous article you learned how to create a vintage effect using Lightroom. I started by showing you some Lightroom Develop Presets you can use as a shortcut, and finished by demonstrating some techniques you can use yourself. The hidden message in the article was that one way to learn how to use Lightroom is to buy some Develop Presets (or download some free ones) and analyze them to see how they work. You can then apply the same techniques to your own photos, and even create your own Develop Presets. Today I’m going to give you some tips on analyzing...

Reuters has reported that Sony is planning to invest 35 billion yen (approximately US$345 million) to expand its manufacturing capacity  of smartphone and tablet image sensors. Apparently this move is at least partly driven by Sony’s aim to increase its orders for image sensors in front-facing cameras that are mainly used for video-chats and taking self-portraits. According to the report, the funds will go towards increasing production of stacked CMOS sensors at two sites on the southern Japanese island of Kyushu and retooling of a factory in northwestern Japan that was...

A Post By: Erin Fitzgibbon In the Northern Hemisphere summer is finally here and that means it’s the beginning of camping season. It’s time to haul out the tent, the propane stove, the canoe, the bug hat and the DSLR. You visit all these beautiful places, gain a sense of peace and respect for Mother Nature, then come home and wish you were still there. Having beautiful, sharp images of the brutal trail you faced, the noisy bird that woke you at dawn, or the incredible sunset you experienced can make the experience all the more rich. The added bonus is you have some fantastic images you...

Retzius, the K-5 series also had reports of this. I got one anyway and never encountered the problem. I’m not sure how many cameras there are that don’t have a considerable flaw – pick your brand, and you either get mirrors dropping out, oil splatter on sensor, shutter shock at certain frequently used shutter speeds, light leaks, the list goes on. It’s a bit like the real water pub: “We’ve got underexposing cameras, overexposing cameras, poorly white-balancing cameras, non-waterproof waterproof cameras, shallow DoF cameras, deep DoF cameras, fixed focal...

I’ve already read enough about the camera, on line, to know that if I could afford one, it would almost certainly be my daily shooter. Beautiful! Exquisite lines and, from the footage I’ve seen about its creation, craftsmanship! I especially like the colourful body skins — very stylish and high-tech while still conveying a playful air! I think that’s what appeals to me the most about this camera, the feeling that it’s been designed for people who want to fit precision, performance, and Leica’s rich tradition in their pockets, while still being able to have...

Chinese device manufacturer Xiaomi unveiled its latest flagship smartphone, the Mi 4, today. With a metal frame and a distinctly iPhone-esque design the Mi 4 looks like a proper premium product and when looking at the spec sheet the interior components confirm this initial impression. Under the hood a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 SoC and 3GB RAM should ensure that Android 4.4.2 and all apps run smoothly and without delay. Buyers can choose between versions with 16 or 64GB of storage and if you tend to shoot a lot of images and video on your phone the latter might be the better option as...

How Do You Design Interaction? By Luca Leone July 21st, 2014 Interaction DesignUser Experience 13 Comments If you have to design an interface it’s almost obvious to think to begin the process by drawing. But is this the best way? I once casually started by writing an imagined human-computer conversation, and only afterwards I continued by drawing. This changed my way of thinking and I never went back to drawing first. This article will explain the reasons behind my decision. I have always been a huge admirer of the guys at Basecamp1. Some time ago, I was reading a tweet by Jason Zimdars,...
