A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt Bryan Peterson is well known for his photography books and workshops. He’s also now one of the featured photography teachers on Adorama TV. You can get his book Learning to See Creatively on Adorama.com. In these three videos Bryan gives us a few tips on doing just that. Seeing Creatively This first video is a quick tip on using Selective Focus: In this second video Bryan is leading a workshop, ironically on the Oregon coast where I was just two weeks ago. This video shows how to get creative shooting things on the beach. Make note they are shooting a...

A Post By: Andrew S. Gibson Before you create a vintage look using Lightroom, you have to decide what characteristics you think that look should have. It may mean different things to other people, but here’s my version. Photos with the vintage look are nostalgic, evoking the look of faded photos taken decades ago. There may be a colour cast or faded blacks, and they should look as if they may have been taken with film. What is your definition of the vintage look? Whatever it is, once you have arrived at it, you can think about how you can achieve that look in Lightroom. Using Lightroom...

A Post By: Catherine Just Have you ever found yourself in a relationship that’s not really working, or a job that has you feeling trapped? Or maybe your day in, day out lifestyle has you feeling glib. Whatever the case may be, we’ve all been there. We use different things to cope. Some people drink, while others go to therapy or journal. Well, there is a way that photography can play a part in raising you up out of that negative mindset. When I was a new mom, my son Max was not really napping. It was driving me absolutely crazy. So I decided to take my iPhone to nap time and when he fell...

A Post By: Anne McKinnell The colour and texture of birds’ plumage makes them fascinating subjects for photography, made all the more exciting by their fleeting and elusive nature. With a lot of patience and practice, and the help of these tips, you’ll soon be on your way to making memorable photographs of our feathered friends. Equipment To capture the best bird photography, the most important thing you’ll need is a lens with a very long focal length. How long, exactly? Generally, the longer the better for maximum magnification. But keep in mind that lenses get remarkably heavy – if...

The aluminum group, from left to right: Sirui T-2005x, Cullmann Concept One 622T, Benro Travel Angel II, Manfrotto BeFree, Dolica LX600 Ultra Premium. It is frequently said that ‘the best camera is the one you have with you,’ and when a stable platform for that camera is needed, the same could be said for tripods. Some leg sets are so large and heavy that they stay in the back of a closet or trunk of a car, despite the best intentions. Others are so small and fragile that using them requires bodily contortions, while a light wind could blow them over, sending your gear crashing...

Useful Adobe Fireworks Resources: Extensions (Part 1) By Michel Bozgounov July 18th, 2014 ExtensionsFreebiesWorkflow 0 Comments Fireworks is an excellent UI design tool; however, Adobe decided to feature-freeze1 it back in 2013 and (at the same time) did not offer any replacement tool to its users. Nevertheless, since Fireworks runs fine today on the latest Mac OS X and Windows OS, and since it still offers a solid UI-design feature set, many designers continue to use it and rely on it daily. For those of you who are searching for a similar tool, Sketch 3.02 seems to be a pretty good...

Scaling Down The BEM Methodology For Small Projects By Maxim Shirshin July 17th, 2014 CSSHTML5JavaScript 11 Comments Front-end development is no longer about individual frameworks. Tools are available — we merely have to choose. To make the right choices for your project, you need to start with a general approach, or methodology. But most methodologies have been created by big companies? Are they still useful for small companies, or do we need to reinvent them at a small scale? You probably already know of BEM121, one of those methodologies developed by a big company — namely, Yandex2....

A Post By: Suzi Pratt Architectural photography may seem like an incredibly boring subject, but there is lots of creativity involved with shooting buildings, not to mention it’s a rather lucrative way to make a side income as a photographer. However, the rules of photographing a building versus a person are quite different. Whether you are a relatively seasoned architectural photographer looking to refine your approach, or a budding photographer curious about how to create impactful architectural photos, these tips should help take your photography to another level. A Post By: Katie McEnaney People are captivated by reflections, and photographers eagerly seek out still bodies of water in order to capture stunning reflection shots. But a perfect reflection may be closer than you think, especially if it has just been raining. Puddle reflection Photographing puddle reflections Puddles are an incredibly useful if perhaps surprising source for reflections. Puddles are generally shallow and found in protected areas or depressions, which means that they are likely to hold smooth, still water. They can also be found in many different locations, providing a...

rodskogj: As a user of PhotoShop CS6, I look at the possibility that support for ACR in CS6 will end soon and I’ll have to move to CaptureOne, LR, or something else for raw extraction, because I won’t rent from Adobe. So instead of 8.6, what about 8.51, since it’s so few cameras–though yes there are the lens profiles? The point remains with the move from ACR 6 (which ended at 6.7) to 7, support for ACR in Photoshop CS5.1 ended. So the D810 may be the obvious reason, but you ignored the real question. I have two DSLR camera’s, a Sony A350 and a Nikon D90. I have a wide angle and couple other zoom lenses for the Sony but only one 18-105m for the Nikon. Sometimes my photo’s are awesome when shooting a property but not consistently. I assume it is the settings and flash I’m using that is causing me the biggest headache. A Post By: Barry J Brady You are a photographer. You love getting out there and doing your best to create great images. Photographers also love something else. Camera equipment. Sometimes you may find that you spend more time searching for a new lens, filter or accessory than actually photographing with it. When you meet other photographers you will hear them talking about the latest piece of equipment that has just launched. Why is this? Why are some photographers obsessed with equipment. My personal opinion is that we fall into the marketing trap. Sometimes we really do think that a new...

A Post By: Oded Wagenstein As part of my series on portrait photography, in this article, I will discuss composition, one of the most important aspects of creating a good portrait image. Are there any laws regarding framing a portrait? Can I leave hands, fingers, or part of the head out of the frame? Does a portrait have to include a face? I will answer these questions that my students often ask. It is important to keep in mind that as in all aspects of art, there are no “rules†or “must dos†here, because you can do anything as long as it works for you. So, I will describe...

A flying flash rig that tracks the position of both photographer and subject to maintain consistent lighting angles has been developed by researchers from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Cornell University. In a project designed to test co-ordination between aerial robots and ground-based targets, researchers programmed a flash-carrying drone to light people in the studio as the subjects and the photographer changed positions. In the researchers’ experiments, the robot helicopter was equipped with a continuous-light source, a photographic flash, and a laser rangefinder....

A Post By: Simon Ringsmuth If you have ever shared a photo by email, or posted one online, you might have seen a three or four-letter extension at the end of the file name that looked like “.jpg†or “.jpegâ€. Almost every camera – from cell phones to point and shoots to expensive DSLRs takes pictures in this format – with good reason. You can fit thousands of JPG photos on a memory card, and they are generally good quality and easy to view on a computer or mobile device. You don’t need any special software to open a JPG file, and if you do want to edit one, almost any...

A Post By: Mason Resnick Many modern digital cameras boast incredible ISO speeds. Where ISO 400 or 800 was the top speed in the film era, usually accompanied by grain the size of golf balls, today’s digital cameras can give you top ISOs of 6400, 12,800, 25,600 or even higher. Camera makers boast of these high speeds and use this information to increase camera sales. Inexperienced photographers will be tempted to jack up the ISO on their new cameras, and keep it there. However, just because the feature is there doesn’t mean you should use it all the time. In fact, the best practice is to...

“This is supossed to be an “enthusiast” camera. Meaning RAW. “ Maybe it is a camera for people who like to take and show pictures. I’d bet that if you took 100 pictures, randomly assigned 50% to be taken as RAW, the other 50% to be taken as in-camera jpeg, then printed them all out and asked people to choose their favourites, that you would find zero correlation to RAW/jpeg. It is the picture that matters to most people, get over the measurebating. What I really don’t get, however, is your logic. You dictate which people this camera is for, despite knowing...

Nikon has released version 1.0.0 of Capture NX-D, introduced in beta form earlier this year. Capture NX-D is the first version of Nikon’s flagship Raw converter since previous developer Nik Software was bought by Google in 2012 (it appears that Capture NX-D is powered by Silkypix). Capture NX-DÂ lacks the Control Point adjustments that were a feature of its predecessors (and were arguably the main original selling point). It features a new user interface, batch conversion and a non-destructive workflow that saves adjustments in sidecar files alongside the original...

Surfing tends to conjure up images of sun-soaked beaches and clear blue water. Surf photographer Chris Burkard looks for his subjects far north of the California beaches you’d normally expect. Cold water surfing pits surfers against the elements, with no more than a few millimeters of wetsuit between them and frigid water. Likewise, Burkard braves the sub-zero temperatures to capture them. SmugMug Films profiles Burkard in its latest episode. He also answered a few questions for us – read on to find out more about his work and visit his website to...

A Post By: Ken Lyons Changing shutter speed not only changes the amount of light that enters the camera, it also changes the way your images look. By changing the shutter speed, you’re allowing the film or digital sensor to be exposed for a longer or shorter period of time. That affects how motion is portrayed in your image. A short (or ‘fast’) shutter speed will freeze motion, whereas a long (or ‘slow’) shutter speed will allow you to show motion. Let’s take a look at a few examples using slower shutter speeds to show motion in your images: Slow speeds – camera stationary The...

A Post By: Dan Waters There’s an expression in the photography world called ‘ESP’ which stands for ‘Expressions sell photographs’. It’s true, a lovely expression is the single most important thing in any portrait photo (unless it’s a silhouette). However, portrait photography isn’t as simple as teasing out a beaming smile, or haughty laugh from your subject. If your captivating expression is complemented by delicious light and an intriguing environment then you have all the ingredients for a cracking image. Whenever I photograph portraits these are some of the things I’m...

The XG-1 records HD video at 1080/30 fps, and it provides sensor-shift SR Shake Reduction to help keep things steady while using that long telephoto zoom. Adobe has updated both the iOS and Android versions of its free Photoshop Express mobile app. The new version comes with a number of added features and improvements but to many photographers the most useful new function will be the ability to edit Raw files. Adobe has not provided much information about the new feature so we’ve tried it out and found that the only way to open our Nikon D700 .NEF-file in Photoshop Express is to import it from Adobe’s Revel cloud service. We also saved the file on our device’s internal storage, but there it could not be recognized by...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt This video does a great job of explaining how the histogram on your camera works and how to read it. I do slightly disagree with his tip on having a mountain in the center is the best option, as it does depend on the subject. A Post By: Amy Lee As parents and photographers, we take thousands and thousands of photos of our children every year. Looking at my Lightroom catalogue from last year, I have over 3000 photos of the kids, and that doesn’t include all the pictures I took with my phone camera! In our house, the camera is always out. I take pictures of them throughout the day, no matter what they’re doing. The kids know the camera is a part of our lives, and they don’t act differently when they see me taking pictures of them, as some adults would. I’m a big believer that photos are too precious to live...

We did a way too brief visit to the Lofotens some years ago as part of a Hurtigruten cruise (a workboat carrying freight, mail and passengers along the Norwegian coast from Bergen, Norway to Kirkenes, Norway on the Russian Frontier). fuego6: It’s very difficult, not impossible, but takes extraordinary re-engineering. Look at the picture of the pages; that child labor was used to fetch books for patrons. Libraries aren’t, and never were, simply reading rooms, those rooms being easy enough to create in older spaces. It’s a classic mistake to assume the public features of a building are its whole function. Perhaps with hundreds of millions of dollars a robot able to retrieve books from the stacks could be built into an old opera house in 2014, but not in the 1950s. The old opera house makes for nice...

Before I bare all, I need to give you some background information, and I am pretty sure you have been in the exact same position at some point in your photography hobby or career. Not long ago, early 2010, I was horrible at photo editing. I was literally tossing my camera in a box and packing it away. My problem was that I was extremely frustrated with...

A Post By: Karthika Gupta Photographing from the hip is, quite literally, having your camera near or resting on your hip and pressing the shutter button. This photography method is typically used in street photography when the photographer wants to take candid, incognito photos. But, sometimes, trying this as a deliberate photography method is just as fun. It forces you to change your perspective, your vision and your creative eye. You start to look at the scene as a bigger picture rather than as a tunnel vision through your viewfinder. Plus, if your family is anything like mine, where they...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt Earlier today I shared a bunch of jaw-dropping images of beaches. As you may have guessed, this week’s photography challenge is one in the same. Even if you aren’t near the ocean you can get out and find a body of water somewhere near you – perhaps a lake, pond, stream or even the reflecting pool at your local town hall. The idea is to get out and photograph the stuff near the water including: the beach and the sand pathways reflections clouds and sky rocks silhouettes of people against the sun or sunset marine life in tidal pools the local flora or...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt Seeing as how I’m writing this while I sit with a view of the Pacific Ocean on the Oregon coast, I thought I’d round up some great images of beaches, the sea and the ocean for you this week. Some of them incorporate some great long exposure techniques, and many are shot at the magical time of day the Golden Hour. If you live near the sea you always have a great subject right nearby. If not, find a local pond, lake, stream or other smaller body of water and make your own magic. Enjoy! Shelley Beach by Ashley Poyyayil on 500px The Return by Jonathan Danker on...

The Cooperative of Photography received a lot of attention recently for a video featuring seven easy photographic hacks using household items. Now they’ve released a follow up video with seven more neat tips and tricks. For instance, did you know that a beer cozy can be repurposed as a cheap lens protector? And had you considered that a tablet computer might be employed to create a backdrop for still life photographs? The beauty of these hacks is in their simplicity. Everyone has a mirror handy, but few people think of how to turn that into a lighting tool,...

In response to all the controversy that its move to a subscription payment system created, Adobe had promised that it would find ways to ensure Creative Cloud customers’ work wasn’t ‘held-hostage’ if they let their subscription lapse. This was particularly pertinent for users of Photoshop Lightroom – since it arranges your images and the corrections made to them in a database. Now, Adobe has confirmed that its latest Lightroom update has made it possible for subscribers to keep accessing their images and edits, and continue using some...

A Roadmap To Becoming An A/B Testing Expert By Kevin Holesh July 11th, 2014 TestingUser ExperienceUser Research 0 Comments A/B testing, also known as split testing, is the method of pitting two versions of a landing page against each other in a battle of conversion. You test to see which version does a better job of leading visitors to one of your goals, like signing up or subscribing to a newsletter. You can test two entirely different designs for a landing page or you can test small tweaks, like changes to a few words in your copy. Running A/B tests on your website can help you improve...

A Post By: Adam Welch We’ve all heard one of the cornerstones of making better photographs is to slow down; be deliberate and take your time. This is very true. In no way am I advocating not being purposeful in your shooting. However, sometimes there are situations when the difference between getting a good image, instead of a blurred and washed out frame, is separated by only a few precious seconds. This is especially true when it comes to working in action filled situations like sports or street photography, but it can also be just as easy to miss moments in nature and landscape...

A Post By: Lynsey Mattingly I don’t floss every day. I still use the word “rad†as an adjective and not in the cool retro way, but in the I-don’t-have-another-word-for-it way. The driving speed limit and I have a love/hate relationship. And I have been known, on particularly hard days, to let my kids eat cookies for breakfast and ice cream for dinner. These are all terrible habits that I need to work on. My “bad†photography habits though, the ones that people say you shouldn’t do or should just get over already, those are actually helping me. They might be helping you too....

It was good for about 60 years until the Tessar was introduced. That was >100 years ago. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tessar_Lens N.B. I am not against old things per se as I am quite an antique myself, and, last time I used film, it was processed in Rodinal, a developer about as old as the Petzval design. I can’t understand how this design was, in any way, “ahead of its time.” It seems to have been right on its time. It was dreamed up, kisckstarted, designed and produced by a company which has described its products as toys. I would like to play with this lens, but I...

How To Profit From Selling Digital Products (Part 1) By Nathan Barry July 10th, 2014 BusinessProduct Strategy 0 Comments At the end of 2012, I was talking with a good friend of mine who runs a small custom woodworking company. We were discussing business over the last year and a few things we learned. While his business did about double the revenue that mine did in 2012, I made considerably more profit. That’s when it sank in how unusual my business really is: Instead of having a 10 to 20% profit margin like many businesses, I had an 85% profit margin in 2012. That actually could have been...

That Steady Thing£36 / ~$62* www.infraredlandscapes.webs.com * International shipping from £13 (~$23) The simple idea that tripods are inconvenient to carry for extended periods has given birth to a host of attempts to find an easier way to steady a camera during a long exposure. We’ve seen string-based contraptions that create tension between the camera and the photographer’s foot to create stability, monopods that sprout legs from their lower extension, beanbags and window/tree/fence clamps – and those are among the more sensible.  A new device...

The S5 is the latest model in Samsung’s line of Galaxy S flagship smartphones and replaces last year’s Galaxy S4. The new model’s camera comes with a slightly larger 1/2.6-inch CMOS BSI sensor and an increased pixel-count of 16MP (up from the S4’s 13MP) but the maximum aperture remains unchanged at F2.2. The M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 EZ zoom lens is a pancake design, which Olympus claims is the slimmest of its type in this class. The 16.1 megapixel camera uses the same Live MOS sensor and TruePic VI processor as the 2012 PEN E-PL5 it replaces. It will retail in the UK for £429.99 from mid-July. Presumably as a substitute for built-in Wi-Fi, the camera has been made compatible with Toshiba’s...
