A Post By: John Davenport Learning how to analyze and judge your own artistic work correctly is a valuable skill that can be a bit tricky to learn properly. I’m sure you’ve heard the saying “I’m my own worst critic†thrown about, you may have even said it yourself in reference to your own photography. However, there are ways that you can harness this self-criticism and learn from it rather than allowing it to consume you and destroy your self-confidence. Learning how to constructively critique your own photography can not only help you make better photographs each time you...

A Post By: Andrew S. Gibson I showed you how to convert your photos to black and white in Lightroom in an earlier article. But, considering it dealt purely with global adjustments, the piece only gives you half the story. Global adjustments get you started, but in order to get the best black and white conversion possible you need to make local adjustments as well. This article will show you how to do this. First, a couple of definitions: Global adjustments: Any adjustments (to brightness, contrast etc.) that affect the entire image. Local adjustments: Adjustments that affect only part of the...

I’ve ended up with a mix I like, using 18-1080mm (equivalent) lenses on my Nikon 1 system in good light (including under a clear sky after sunset), but switching to my FX camera in low light, high contrast, situations. And for landscape, if that is my mission of the day! Inferior IQ is often claimed for the 1″ cameras, but the stunningly good shots I’ve taken, and other people take, with the new 70-300CX, simply isn’t possible with any FX gear a non-millionaire can afford (where can you buy a 200-800 lens, to begin with, at any price?!). And well treated, including...

Chinese smartphone manufacturer ZTE has launched its latest high-end model and looking at the Nubia Z7’s specifications it’s clear the new model aims to compete at the very top of the market. The Nubia comes with a 13MP imaging sensor in its camera module, and while no information on sensor size has been released we’re assuming that it’s a 1/3-inch variant. Light is captured through a lens with an F2.0 maximum aperture and an optical image stabilization system is available for keeping things steady in low light. The Dual-LED flash should ensure pleasant white...

Breakpoints And The Future Of Websites By Obinwanne Hill July 8th, 2014 CSSJavaScriptLayouts 1 Comment When the iPhone came out in 2007, the demonstration of its web browser by the late great Steve Jobs gave the not-so-subtle impression that Apple wasn’t too perturbed about its users pinching to zoom and swiping to scroll as part of the browsing experience. Responsive web design aimed to solve this problem by smartly applying flexible grids, fluid layouts and, of course, media queries. However, responsive web design has turned out to be somewhat of a case study in the law of unintended...

A Post By: James Maher Central Park South. How many times have you captured an amazing image only to view it on your computer, or as a print, and realize that you screwed something up along the way. Unfortunately, the only way to stop doing a lot of these easy-to-make mistakes is to have an image ruined by them.  Once you screw up an image you’ll quickly learn not to make the same mistake again. Here are the most frequent ways I see photographers ruining their images. Avoid these 10 mistakes that can ruin your images 1. Leaving Image Stabilization on when using a tripod Everyone...

A Post By: Ryan Pendleton What is photography hunting? I am a hunter. My prey, however, does not scurry through the woods, fly through the sky or swim in the streams. My trophies are instead moments, which I stalk, camera at the ready. When the time is right, the target is placed squarely in my sights. Click. I’m constantly on the hunt for that fraction-of-a-second gesture, facial expression or scene that takes an ordinary photograph to the next level. Hunting can be tiring and a little like war, in that there are long periods of boredom interspersed with brief moments of excitement. But...

The Nikon 1 V3 has been out of stock with many retailers online and elsewhere, making the mirrorless camera hard to come by. The duration of the stock shortage has prompted an apology from Nikon Japan, which it recently posted on its website. According to the statement from Nikon, the shortage is on the manufacturing end, with production failing to meet demand. Also mentioned in the apology is the DF-N1000 EVF accessory (bundled with the 1 V3 in the US but optional in other territories), which has suffered from the same out-of-stock issue due to low production...

A Post By: Andrew S. Gibson If you’re interested in black and white photography, the names Joel Tjintjelaar and Julia Anna Gospodarou will probably need no introduction. The work of both photographers has helped define, and push the boundaries of long exposure photography, a relatively new genre in the fine art world. Julia and Joel have joined forces to write a new ebook called From Basics to Fine Art: Black and White Photography – Architecture and Beyond. It is principally aimed at photographers interested in using long exposure techniques to photograph buildings, with some chapters...

So I’ve approached Serge and hopefully he’ll be doing some videos just for you on dPS shortly. Until then he has many helpful videos already, you can search through his YouTube library. The concept of ‘equivalence’ is still somewhat controversial and not always clearly understood. We thought it was about time we explained – and demonstrated – what equivalence means and what it doesn’t. What is equivalence? Equivalence, at its most simple, is a way of comparing different formats (sensor sizes) on a common basis. This is already the way most lenses are talked about: it’s quite common to say that a compact camera includes a ’28-120mm lens’ but the key and (often unspoken) word in that description is...

The photos are kind of 80’s schticky. I think the idea is great — if he had photos of himself in the suit walking in a crowd of people commuting to work — but taken straightforward, or a photo at the breakfast table with his family, he in the suit with the family members dressed normally, or a wedding photo with him in the suit and the bride in gown and he’s looking out a nearby window — that kind of thing — that to me would have taken the idea to a better place. Of the series, the shot on the playground shuttle was the one I liked best — but he...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt Earlier I rounded up a set of reflection images. Now it’s your turn! This week’s photography challenge is reflections Reflections are great for learning to train the eye to see photographically. Start looking for them everywhere, in windows, doors, car panels, wet pavement, puddles, ponds, or icy surfaces. Rules of composition still apply to make a strong image, as does lighting. Here’s a few more examples to get you started on the photography challenge: By Éole Wind By Denis Collette By DCSL By Denis Collette By Anirudh Koul By Kevin Dooley By Trey...

A Post By: Julia May As a beginner photographer, I put most of my time and energy into the product side of my business. I need to practice, improve my shooting and post processing skills, and just grow as a photographer. However, I have a strong intention to make photography my full-time job and be successful in it, which is hardly possible without a business strategy. Besides, with over five years of experience in social media and content marketing, I know for sure that establishing a sound online presence and effective marketing channels may not show you the money today, but it will shape...

A Post By: Jeff Guyer The new Chronicle is part of Domke’s Next Generation line of camera bags. There’s a new line of camera bags on the market, but they come from an old, familiar name. Originally founded in 1976 by photojournalist Jim Domke with the introduction of the F-2, the Domke brand has been synonymous ever since with low-profile, high-quality bags geared towards photojournalists, travel photographers, and anyone else looking for a bag that does a great job protecting their gear without drawing unwarranted attention to the thousands of dollars worth of kit hanging from their...

It appears we can expect an increased interchange of technologies between imaging giant Canon and software maker Microsoft in the near future, thanks to to a patent agreement that was signed by the two parties on Wednesday. Unfortunately the brief statement issued by Microsoft does not reveal an awful lot of detail about the type of patents included in the agreement or how they would be put to use, but simply says that the two companies have “broadened their strategic alliance with the announcement of a broad patent cross-licensing” and that “with this agreement,...

San Francisco-based Peak Design will release a couple of hassle-free camera straps, the Slide and Clutch, in October following a successful funding campaign on Kickstarter. The Slide is a quick-connecting shoulder strap for cameras of any size, while the Clutch is a smaller hand strap designed for use regardless of whether the camera has a battery grip. The Slide can be used as a sling strap, shoulder strap, or neck strap, and is compatible with ARCA-type tripod heads, allowing a tripod to be used without removing any strap components. The Clutch is similar, and its...

Techniques For Creating Custom Textures In Photoshop By Stephen Petrany July 3rd, 2014 PhotoshopTechniquesTutorials 0 Comments Textures are everywhere — the concrete of a sidewalk, the fabric on your chair, even the glass (or plastic) surface of the screen you’re staring at right now. It’s natural that textures appeal to us because we see and feel them every day. And it’s no surprise why textures have become such an important element in design — so important, in fact, that I want to share with you the tricks and tools to create your own textures using Photoshop. A Post By: Barry J Brady Seascape image – Before and After image editing We hear it all the time, “That photo has been Photoshoppedâ€. Sometimes it sounds like the photo has caught a disease or that Photoshop is some undesirable effect that has been added to the image. Photoshop is the KEY to making your good images look spectacular. Yes, I said “good†images. Photoshop is not about fixing mistakes or trying to rescue a bad shot. It is more about refining your images and making them look amazing without overdoing it. Photoshop is a fantastic tool when it is used effectively but can...

A Post By: James Maher There are a lot of common mistakes to make in photography, but possibly the most frequent is to shoot in Aperture Priority mode when it’s not the best choice. There are many situations where shooting in Aperture Priority is ideal, such as when you are using a tripod and your shutter speed does not matter, when you are in strong sunlight, when you are shooting a scene with a wide-angle lens and nothing is moving, or when you want a very shallow depth of field for aesthetic purposes. However, in most other situations it is beneficial to shoot in Shutter Priority mode...

Aerial photography is booming. Putting a camera up in the air offers new opportunities in familiar types of photography and videography, like sports, landscapes, and more. Even better, it costs less than $1,000 to get started with the DJI Phantom II and GoPro Hero3+ – widely considered to be the gold standard setup for drone photography. While that buy-in price is reasonable for such a new hobby, it still costs about as much as a mid-level system camera plus a decent lens. But is there a cheaper way to try it out? There are a handful of truly affordable...

Introduction to the Petzval lens By Andy Westlake The Lomography Petzval 85mm F2.2 is a recreation of a 19th century lens, complete with brass barrel Lomography isn’t a company we’ve historically talked about much on DPReview; with its emphasis on low-fi, ‘shoot from the hip’ photography using plastic film cameras, it’s a long way from the typical interests of our readers. But last year the company came up with an interesting idea: to recreate a classic 19th century portrait lens for modern SLRs. After a wildly successful Kickstarter...

Don’t Be Scared Of Functional Programming By Jonathon Morgan July 2nd, 2014 CodingJavaScriptTechniques 0 Comments Functional programming is the mustachioed hipster of programming paradigms. Originally relegated to the annals of computer science academia, functional programming has had a recent renaissance that is due largely to its utility in distributed systems (and probably also because “pure†functional languages like Haskell are difficult to grasp, which gives them a certain cache). Stricter functional programming languages are typically used when a system’s performance and...

A Post By: Gavin Hardcastle I’d forgotten all about my childhood dreams of achieving world domination using my very own robot army until I switched on the TB3 from eMotimo. As soon as I synched up the wireless remote and started panning and tilting this robotic tripod head, I was transformed into a grinning 8 year old boy who believed he could do anything. I expect that the eMotimo exhibit at trade shows is usually ringed by a troupe of grinning time-lapse photography nerds like myself, who just realized they stumbled upon a truly legendary tool for photographic creativity. No, I’m going to suggest you get out of your comfort zone and do something new. If you open up your Flickr, 500px, or wherever you store your thousands of kitty cat photographs you might notice that there may be a lot of similar shots. Different subjects, but a similar style perhaps? Different...

Android “copy, steal, copy, pilfer, copy, filch, purloin, steal” what exactly? The pulldown notification bar?Multitasking?Quick settings bar? Basically everything that made iOS a ‘full featured’ OS and pleasant to use on a day-to-day basis is ripped off from Android and Windows Phone. They stole the ugly flat, textual in-app UI in iOS 7 from Windows Phone and now Android is going the same way. Get used to it, companies copy eachother because all three vendors seem to think that the consumer will only buy whatever looks the same as everything else. Thankfully, L, from...

I agree on this too. On the 4k deal and “very few people” have the TV for it…think back to the old days of video when full HD was new. I think a lot of people may have said that same thing. Now, it would be nice to have that full HD video from 5-10 years ago vs the SD. When i doubt, that 4k can’t hurt. However, there are MANY things of the RX10 I greatly prefer. Some of them include: f/2.8 all the way, exp comp dial (I hate cameras that don’t have this), threaded shutter button (so I can use my soft releases), step-less aperture for video, aperture ring like a...

Facing Your Fears: Approaching People For Research By Carolyn Chandler June 30th, 2014 CommunicationResearchUser Research 6 Comments When working on a project, have you ever felt that you and the rest of the team were making a lot of decisions based on assumptions? Having to make choices with limited information is not unusual — especially in complex projects or with brand new products. Phrases like “We think people will use this feature because of X†or “We believe user group Y will switch to this product†become part of the early deliberation on what to develop and how to...

A Post By: Darren Rowse For some of us it’s summer time,  for most of us it’s the middle of the year, for all of us it’s time for a huge dPS sale! If you’ve been a Digital Photography School reader for a while, you probably already know about our huge end of year sale (don’t worry that’s still happening). But the team got talking recently and we all agreed that it seemed such a long time away. So it’s with excitement that I can announce we’re going to have a mid year sale – dPS style. See the sale page here for each deal as it goes live. For the next 7 days we’ll...

A Post By: Philipp Dukatz We all know this problem. You take a picture of a beautiful scene but it just doesn’t turn out the way you want. Something is missing. It usually isn’t a matter of your camera or the settings you are applying. But what is it then? The question at hand is how do you get from a snapshot to an interesting, unique, and well composed photograph. To answer this, we have to move away from the technical aspects and go more into the creative and artistic aspects of photography. You might say that this is a very subjective matter and that beauty is in the eye of the...

A Post By: Mason Resnick Yes, You Can Change The Weather! You just brought home a bunch of beautiful flowers, and you’d love to get an interesting photo of them. You take them outside, but it’s a dark, cloudy day. The light is boring, and the forecast is for several days of overcast weather. By the time the sun finally comes out, your flowers may have wilted. What should you do? Well, you can change the weather. Really, you can by using your off-camera flash and a simple garden hose to create a sun-shower. Thanks to Canon’s wireless flash system you can, in the words of the...

I’m a mirrorless camera user myself (NEX-6), and they did take big steps forward in the last few years – but as mentioned, they are still not “quite there”.I believe a good photographer could do “good enough” with one of the recent models like the A-6000, X-T1, E-M1 or (sensor size aside) one of the Nikon 1’s; but the World Cup is at the highest level of competition for pro sports photography, where missing one chance at a photo could lose a lot of money. Therefore I completely understand the professionals don’t want to take the smallest risk...

Owners of Sony SLT, NEX and R-series cameras with Multi Interface Shoes now have a couple more flash options. Two flash units offered by Metz, the mecablitz 44 AF-1 digital and 52 AF-1 digital, are now available for the Sony Multi Interface shoe. The 44 AF-1 is a compact strobe designed to provide light without the bulk of a full-sized flash, while the 52 AF-1 digital is the most powerful strobe in Metz’s ‘mecablitz’ series. Sony systems released after the middle of 2013 feature a new strobe interface, necessitating a dedicated hotshoe mount. Prior to...

For those folks who’ve shot rangefinders for an extended length of time the issue is there is only one (currently) digital rangefinder camera. The M is, like it or not, the only game in town. If you want to play then you have to pay – if not, there are plenty of capable “rangefinder-like” systems including the Sony A7/r – but the difference is in focusing – while you can focus quite easily using just the rangefinder on the Leica M, the focus peaking and manual focus tools on the Sony are, sadly, not the same and do require more time. If you’re all...

There are many points, but not least those who want to have long telephoto performance, but can’t afford a 800/5.6 lens, like those who like motor sports, bird lovers, and probably a lot of other uses. The quality of the images in good light is very close to most APS-C/DX cameras, and you can use the same lenses, with maintained VR and AF. In low light I switch to my FX camera, but for the rest the CX cameras have taken over, totally. The DX cameras collect dust, as I see no advantage in using them. The new VR 70-300/4.5-5-6 is superbly sharp, and fits easily in my jacket pocket. That...

Quite stunning, particularly given this subject matter being well traveled. Yet, I am frustrated with some comments alluding to this work as so much worthy of exposure than yesterday’s offering. Despite respect for individual preference, imagine an appreciation, on some level, for both features. And the acknowledgement that neither hurts anyone, quite the opposite as it broadens exposure. Certainly any article on the site is incapable of wasting space, given the structure here. Such attitudes are a bit childish. Source Article from...

A Post By: Andrew S. Gibson I recently wrote about the importance of texture in my article about converting photos to black and white in Lightroom and my review of MacPhun’s Intensify app. Today I thought it would be interesting to take a closer look at this compositional element, and how becoming more aware of it can help you create stronger images. Why is texture important? The primary reason is that it helps you create a sense of depth and tactility within your photos. Let’s look at some practical examples. Photo with lots of texture Here’s a photo I took in a Bolivian town. Look at...

A Post By: Michael Ofei By plantoo47 When starting your photography business it’s easy to get caught up in how good your portfolio looks, buying new equipment, or how many followers you have on social media. While these tasks are important, you risk overlooking some crucial numbers that will help you to hold yourself accountable and succeed as a result. Large corporations have whole departments tracking data to help their CEO’s make better business decisions. So why is this completely overlooked in one-person businesses? In this article you will learn the Five not-so-obvious mistakes...

A Post By: Jeff Guyer The new Loka UL backpack from F-Stop Gear combines lightweight rugged protection for your camera gear with the space you need for other outdoor essentials. Among the many life lessons learned from my father was the one about always making sure you have the right tool for the job. I think we all do our best to apply this wisdom to the gear we pack inside our camera bags, but I’ve always felt that it’s just as important to apply it to the bags themselves. For starters, the bag that gets you to the gig isn’t always the best bag for getting you through the gig. I have...

Damien Demolder – former editor of Amateur Photographer Magazine There is a rule in the cruise ship business that you never go on a vessel’s first voyage. The ship is just out of builder’s yard, the crew is new and unfamiliar with the layout of the decks, and the toilets and/or air conditioning are almost guaranteed to fail the moment you are too far from land to turn back. It makes sense to allow others to experience all the problems, to do all the pointing out and complaining, and to give the cruise line time to complete the fixes that will make the ship the...

Instead of lamenting, congratulate your mums, dads, sisters, brothers, girlfriends, and yourself for helping Apple make the iPhone the most popular camera ever. It is as expensive as a real camera, and with a plan, the cost is high even as buying pro DLSR gear. But it is sooo convenient, so easy to use, you need no knowledge of photography, and it does it all for you, you do instant Facebook updates, right? Now the most popular camera’s maker has introduced its own developer substance for its negatives, that does it all of you, they way they like — whether you like it or not. You...
