Seems strange for me, but in comparison with the Canon 5D Mark III, at not exceptionnaly high ISO, says ISO 6400, with matched exposure, the Canon have much more Dynamic Range, streets and lights are less “burned”. I downloaded some of the A7s raws from Imaging-Resource, and the higher ISO ones, say above 12,800, don’t really compete with the Nikon D4s. (I have my own D4s raws shot into deep shadow, with bad lighting adjacent.) The Sony is close but not as good for noise control and colour at say ISO 25,600–and the Nikon remains useable thru about ISO 40,000, while the Sony not really. I have just gone back to eos-m as my compact camera of choice. I bought an RX100 because the glacial focusing of the eos-m (and inability to focus is low light) was killing me. The RX100 is so close to being perfect but Sony, as usual, destroy their amazing hardware with stupid software. The two that I couldn’t tolerate are the lack of interval timer mode (with no option for remote control, although I believe that the RX100 II does this with a smartphone app) and the pathetic max 0.7eV, 3 shot bracket. Last year I tried the Olympus TG-2 which was one of the 2013 recommendations. I like the color rendition, like the one of my XZ-2, but definitely not better than most 1/1.7″ from other manufacturers as said below. My old 7MP 1/2.3″ sensor PowerShot A720 IS takes sharper pictures than this camera. misolo, If add other fasts, I agree with you that lens makes difference, and the easy example is Sony RX100-M3 has better IQ than RX10 in SAME higher ISO. Of course, primes are optimized for its focus length and it has less number of glass than zoom (not mention it is faster).
