Video: Canon REALLY wants you to look after your camera gear

As for lens cleaning solutions, after several tries, including a product offered by a major filter manufacturer, I have grown weary of using them. Can’t shake the feeling that they indeed tend to create more problems than they solve (what you so aptly call ‘rainbow’ smearing certainly rings a bell). Rarely end up with anything worse than a little dust, some raindrops, or the occasional fingerprint on lens surfaces anyway. And for that, given the quality of today’s nano coatings, a clean (!) microfiber cloth and perhaps a little breath (or drop of tap water applied to...

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G lab test report

Alastair, the saying was fairly common in the film days. I heard it quite a few times before I was even involved in photography (beyond using a 35mm compact) so I’m surprised you hadn’t! I wasn’t being ironic at all; I was talking about the mid-range lineup as a group. But I’m not convinced about the 35/2 IS either. While I haven’t been able to study photos from this new 35/1.8 yet, I’d say the Nikon 35/1.8 DX lens, and possibly even the similar Sony 35/1.8, already produce nicer looking images. Canon mid-range lenses look like they use cheaper glass, and...

Samsung reveals super-thin and high-resolution Galaxy S tablets

Samsung used to have some pretty decent Wolfson DACs on their phones early on, but they were still using their own SoC back then… They moved away from that at one point, no clue if the same parts mate with the Qualcomm SoC everyone are using these days or what they’re using on the tablets though. I haven’t found anyone doing even an inkling of decent sound quality evaluation for these kinda products… Anandtech has been doing some interesting tests, though limited to a handful of phones. Just having X DAC or whatever isn’t any kind of guarantee either ,...

Career Advice For Graduating Web Design Students

Career Advice For Graduating Web Design Students Career Advice For Graduating Web Design Students By Jeremy Girard June 13th, 2014 CommunicationCommunityInspiration 0 Comments It’s that time of year again: graduation, when students transition away from the classroom to what will hopefully be a long and successful career in their chosen industry. I recently said goodbye to some of my own website design and development students. Instead of teaching lessons in design principles or responsive websites, I spent our final evening together answering their questions. One of those questions was, “What is the best career advice you’ve ever...

3 Tips on How to Approach Photography as a Hobby

3 Tips on How to Approach Photography as a Hobby A Post By: John Davenport Recently, I gave you a look inside the bag of a hobby photographer on a budget, and after reading all the comments on that post, I got to thinking about a topic that doesn’t really get all that much attention… There are technical posts that detail things like getting sharper images and even plenty of advice on going pro, but what I have not found in my search, is any solid advice on how to approach photography as a hobby. Sure you’ll need to learn the technical stuff in order to make quality photos, but there’s more to approaching this craft...

8 Reasons to Use Silver Efex Pro 2 for Your Black and White Conversions A Post By: Andrew S. Gibson You can convert colour photos to black and white in Photoshop and Lightroom (or your Raw conversion software of choice). But the last few years have also seen an increase in the number of plug-ins built to do nothing else, other than convert photos to monochrome. Today I’m going to look at what many people consider to be the best black and white plug-in around – Nik Software’s Silver Efex Pro 2. Rather than provide a comprehensive review of the software, I’m going to look at some of the things you can do with it that you can’t (or would be much more...

Sassy Z-Index Management For Complex Layouts

Sassy Z-Index Management For Complex Layouts Sassy Z-Index Management For Complex Layouts By Jackie Balzer June 12th, 2014 CodingCSSFrameworks 0 Comments Z-index is an inherently tricky thing, and maintaining z-index order in a complex layout is notoriously difficult. With different stacking orders and contexts, keeping track of them as their numbers increase can be hard — and once they start to spread across CSS files, forget about it! Because z-index can make or break a UI element’s visibility and usability, keeping your website’s UI in working order can be a delicate balance. Because z-index is contextual, once you start using...

Building With Gulp

Building With Gulp If you’re familiar with Grunt, then you’ll notice that this is pretty different to how Grunt does it. Grunt doesn’t use streams; instead, it takes files, runs a single task on them and saves them to new files, repeating the entire process for every task. This results in a lot of hits to the file system, making it slower than Gulp. For a more comprehensive read on streams, check out the “Stream Handbook.” gulp.src() The gulp.src() function takes a glob (i.e. a string matching one or more files) or an array of globs and returns a stream that can be piped to plugins. Gulp uses...

Lens Review Canon 300mm f4 Lens for Sports Photography

Lens Review Canon 300mm f4 Lens for Sports Photography A Post By: James Trent Recently I went to a Little League baseball game and shot with my Canon 5D Mark III and my newly purchased, 300mm f/4 L IS. It was the first time shooting sports with my new camera, so I was eager to see how the body would perform as well as the lens. The 300mm is touted as one of Canon’s best sports lenses, so I was counting on it to deliver some quality images. The 5D Mark III, while not specifically a sports camera, is often considered a viable option by sports photographers because of its new autofocus system. I was eager to try it out, and see if I could handle...

Hands-on with the Panasonic Lumix FZ1000

Well, it does make sense, no? Like sony RX100 III this is another really interesting product and not simple small upgrade of previous model. So, why not expose it more, since many show their interest in? Doubt amazon cares much which cameras sell better as long as something sells. Can’t really think of this as advertising. p.s.But i’m sure i won’t buy this, i want it, but i don’t need. Source Article from...

Opinion: Why the FZ1000 isn’t just another superzoom…

There’s one point I missed in this otherwise well articulated opinion : the historical perspective. Several ears ago, “bridge” meant something completelly different than the “superzoom” of today. Compared to today’s superzooms: – the sensor sizes were bigger, at least 1/1.7″– the reach was much more limited (to around 300-400mm)– lenses were faster– optics manufacturing quality was not of cheap feeling and reputation. I’m talking about devices like Sony F717, F828, Fuji cameras (S6500fd, S9XXX, S100fs, S200exr),...

Super Sized: Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ1000 First Impressions Review

“At least GH4 allows u to switch between PAL and NTSC” Yup, that’s the first Pana camera to do so – at least to my knowledge. (Previously, I had to order all my Pana cameras from the US because of the enforced, and, for me, unsuitable lower-framerate PAL only). There’s no information on whether the TZ1000 also has switchable 50p/60p like the GH4 or, did they return to the very bad habit of having to distinct models, we Europeans, as usual, receiving the inferior one. DPR folks, can you give us feedback on this? Does your copy have a mode switch? Source Article...

Panasonic announces Lumix DMC-FZ1000 with 1" sensor and fast lens

Panasonic announces Lumix DMC-FZ1000 with 1" sensor and fast lens Panasonic has announced its Lumix DMC-FZ1000 superzoom camera, which features a 1″-type CMOS sensor and F2.8-4.0, 25-400mm equivalent lens. The sensor is not only the same size as on Sony’s Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 – it’s also the same resolution (20.1MP). The lens doesn’t have a constant aperture like that of the Sony but it has a greater reach, topping out at 400mm rather than 200mm. The lens uses Panasonic’s Depth from Defocus technology, which promises faster focusing.  The FZ1000 features both a fully articulating 921k dot LCD as well as a high resolution...

Maintaining Momentum Through Efficient Mobile Design

Maintaining Momentum Through Efficient Mobile Design Case StudyMaintaining Momentum Through Efficient Mobile Design By Martijn van Tilburg June 10th, 2014 Case StudiesUser ExperienceVisual Design 1 Comment When interacting with mobile devices, users have little patience for confusing interfaces or unnecessary steps that impede their progress. As designers, we must understand the role of momentum in effective user interface design and create experiences that keep our users moving forward. Think about the act of checking email on a mobile device. This is probably one of our most efficient interactions with our phones; we do it while crossing the...

Practical Guide To Understanding The MLS System – For Real Estate Photographers

Practical Guide To Understanding The MLS System – For Real Estate Photographers Just a few days ago I got a great suggestion for this post. The suggestion was to explain the Multiple Listing Service (MLS ) system in the US (it’s probably very similar in other countries) because: “There is so much mystique about this with new RE photographers, it seems that most of them think this is some sort of natural phenomenon that hasn’t been figured out by science yet, or something. Few understand that these are websites that are administered by humans.” Why do you need to understand your MLS? Because MLSs are a services/associations that your clients belong to that...

Levitation Photography 7 Tips for Getting a Great Image

Levitation Photography 7 Tips for Getting a Great Image A Post By: Danielle Ness Levitation images are magical! They draw the viewer in and make them think about what’s not quite right. If you search the internet for levitation photography, you will find amazing examples. However, levitation photography hasn’t become wildly popular yet. I assume it’s because levitation photography looks really difficult. I think most people would be surprised to learn that in its most basic form, it’s just compositing two or more images in editing software. Like most portrait photographers, I shoot what I’m good at, and mostly stay inside my little...

Single Image Star Trails – a Powerful Technique to Create Star Trails in Minutes Using Phototoshop A Post By: Hammad Iqbal If you are reading this, you must be among those who have a special place in their hearts for stars, galaxies and the wonders of the universe. With recent advancements in camera technology, many photographers have captured the beauty of the night sky in spectacular ways. The truth is that every photographer is fascinated by the glittering stars, and captivating night skies, that have the power to instantly teleport us to a world beyond our wildest imaginations. Picquest wants to be the Uber for photography

OK, here’s the scenario. You feel a sudden impulse to have a portrait made, and you are short on time. So you reach for your phone, and use this ap to quickly and efficiently find a portrait studio close to your home. This is what happens when someone wants to design an ap, but there are already 10,000 other aps out there, and all the good ideas have already been taken. So they start scraping for anything that might even be remotely useful. Next, someone will design an ap that helps...

National Park Photography Workshop Permits: Are They Really Necessary?

National Park Photography Workshop Permits: Are They Really Necessary? A Post By: James Brandon Sunrise on the West Side Road at Badwater Basin, Death Valley Back in February of 2014, I led two back-to-back photography workshops in Death Valley National Park with my friend and fellow photographer Mike Mezeul. Planning workshops is a lot of work and takes a lot of love and dedication to do right. Before the process of getting everything set up (making sure the students had all booked their flights, hotels, rental cars, etc.) we needed to apply for a workshop permit. This is sort of a tough thing to do timeline wise. You can apply for it ahead of time before...

The Most Valuable Photography Tips Ever – Results of a Social Media Survey A Post By: Valerie Jardin I recently asked the following question on social media: “What was the most valuable photography tip you ever received?” Needless to say, I received a plethora of really useful tips from the audience. Some were spot on, others were debatable. I thought it would be fun to post a few here and expand on them briefly.  Let’s get started with the most valuable photography tips ever. The best zoom lens is your own feet That is often true but please don’t try it if you are photographing a polar bear and her cubs or a bulky football player running for touch down....

Everything you wanted to know covered in helpful Lightroom tutorial

Good information, but I have to comment on the opening “Lightroom 5 is a powerful program, but that power comes at the expense of a learning curve that some find pretty steep.” The learning curve describes how quickly the effort of doing something goes down as you do more of it. A steep learning curve means you learn quickly and easily, so the effort drops a lot in a hurry. If you meant to say that Lightroom can be difficult to learn, this opening has it backwards. The fact that lots of other people have learning curves backwards too doesn’t change that. This has nothing to...

As ya’ll knew – it’s not the camera, it’s the person behind the lens…good photographs are even possible with iso100 and almost every cheap digicam nowadays…not technically, of course, but from composition, even a cheap holga...

Updated HTC Gallery app offers adjustable UFocus feature

Updated HTC Gallery app offers adjustable UFocus feature One of the most talked about new features of the HTC’s latest flagship smartphone, the One M8, is the Duo Camera. Using the primary camera and a second sensor to create a shallow depth-of-field effect, the Duo Cam produced less-than-perfect results in our testing. Thanks to an update to the Gallery app, the intensity of the effect can now be adjusted.   The M8 records image information on a 1/3-inch 4MP CMOS sensor but also comes with a secondary chip to capture depth information. This is meant to mimic the stereoscopic view of human eyes and allows the camera to distinguish...

Real Estate Photography Question and Answers – #6

Real Estate Photography Question and Answers – #6 Lionel’s Question:  I have an off-camera Nikon SB-600 which I fire with my Cactus 5 in the camera hot shoe. I want to add 3-4 more flashes. I was thinking of  Yongnuo-560 III’s. Do I need to mount a Yongnuo trigger for the 560′s on top of my Cactus 5 in the hot shoe or can I depend on the Yonguo-560′s to flash by optical sensor alone when the SB-600 flashes? Answer: There are two ways to go to trigger your flashes: Answer: LED panels may make sense for studio lighting but with real estate shooting the amount of gear you pack around is super important. When you need to shoot...

Lessons you can learn from master photographers – Minor White, Ansel Adams, and Syl Arena

Lessons you can learn from master photographers – Minor White, Ansel Adams, and Syl Arena A Post By: Adam Welch The reason I have put pen to paper (fingers to keys) is to share with you some simple tips and knowledge that can be gained from taking a look at some notable photographers. Some would even argue that these people are among some of the most creative and artistically idolized craftsmen who have ever captured light with a box. If you’re just starting out on your photographic journey these tips from some of the masters will hopefully help you along. Nikon 1 V3: Real-world Sample Images

Considering these are from a “kit lens,” I’m very impressed. But more so (for me, that is), I’m attracted to the rich, pleasant color tonality of the images that this camera puts out – not to mention the smoothness of the images. I’ve not even looked at the Nikon 1 system due to the other toys I have, but this camera may cause me to take a gander at possibly getting this setup. Source Article from...

Lens Review Tamron 24-70 mm f/2.8 Di VC USD

Lens Review Tamron 24-70 mm f/2.8 Di VC USD A Post By: Jeff Guyer The Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD is a great lens choice for both professionals and enthusiasts. I won’t make you wait until the end of the review for the verdict– this lens absolutely rocks. Plain and simple. Despite what I consider to be a huge and unfortunate misconception among many professional photographers, there are some truly amazing, high-quality lenses being designed and produced by companies other than Nikon and Canon. Dismissing them as being somehow inferior simply because their logos don’t match up with those on the camera would be a big mistake....

10 Great Photography Lessons You Can Learn From a 2 Year Old

10 Great Photography Lessons You Can Learn From a 2 Year Old A Post By: Olivier Duong Nowadays, fancy shmancy cameras can blast you with gazillion frames per second, but non of these can beat the time honored tradition of observation. If there is one skill that has safeguarded my butt many times it’s the simple act of observing. If you don’t believe me, ask my wife. Observation is not only good when making images, it’s also good for insights. Well I’ve observed my son since day one, literally, and now that he is 2 years old, he is the one who is offering me great insights into photography. I’ll make sure he never sees this article. Canon launches Irista cloud storage service with 10GB free

Thank God. There just aren’t enough cloud storage services already. And the unique feature of being photo specific and able to share across social media. Like Flickr then… Canon. Innovative as ever. [Edit] Ok, I’m being harsh. If it has a good back-up interface and is easier/prettier to browse and share than Flickr, then this might be worth a look. Perhaps that’s its sweet-spot: Backup and Albums/sharing in one? I <3 Dropbox for backup but the photo album is so-so. And Flickr is useful as a hub for social sharing but it’s not a good backup service and I...

Rare photos of Nagasaki destruction auctioned

It’s hard to describe, but it was sobering. It was the first time I can remember wanting to leave a museum before I had to. I’d also researched the bombing before going to get a better understanding of the situation. After much thought I think I know how to summarize it. As you learn the details they reinforce an understanding that the bombing was necessary, while simultaneously you’re deeply experiencing the horrors of it. Emotionally it’s impossible to reconcile the two. And then you learn that there were many genuine humanitarian considerations that were followed...

What a royal CRAP!!!To think i come to dpreview thinking about learning something about a camera (like for instance… let’s say… Oh! a REVIEW!) or at least some (INTERESTING!) article about photography! and i almost lost 4minutes of my life watching this…I cannot help but feel a bit sorry for whoever thought that «the resulting video is surprisingly entertaining»?!?!Man, maybe you need to start thinking about better uses of your time, but FOR SURE YOU CAN start right now thinking better about better things to show on dpreview, last time i checked, it was (still) not...

Major update to Instagram brings control over filter adjustments

Major update to Instagram brings control over filter adjustments Instagram is arguably the most popular image filter and sharing app for mobile devices but its feature set has remained almost unchanged since it was introduced, with a relatively small number of effects, and little control over them. As a consequence many mobile photographers have taken to working on their images in dedicated editing apps, such as Snapseed or Pixlr, before posting them on Instagram. The latest version 6 update to the Android and iOS versions of Instagram might be set to remove the additional editing step from many mobile photographers’ work flows. Version 6...

New camera app features in Apple’s iOS 8

Folks, I have some GREAT news for you all: the Camera API in iOS8 seems to start supporting all manual settings: – focus (on non-fixed focus devices, obviously, which means the iPad2 won’t be supported, but everything else will) – aperture (of course none of the current iDevices have variable aperture – this aint Nokia n86) – ISO – shutter speed (something sorely missing on Android) I’ve uploaded the file, AVCaptureDevice.h, which contains all the declarations of the for app developers available methods. In order to find the brand new, above methods,...

Introduction To Developing Fireworks Extensions (They’re Just JavaScript!)

Install the DOM Inspector panel, and then select the text object that represents the “Move” code (or any text object). Make sure that the drop-down menu at the top of the DOM Inspector panel is set to fw.selection. You should see an expanded [object Text] in the Inspector, along with all of its properties and values. From the drop-down menu, I can select between viewing the contents of four objects: fw.selection An array of currently selected elements on the canvas fw The Fireworks object dom The DOM of the currently active document (which we will discuss next) dom.pngText A property of...

How to do Long Exposure Photography and Light Trails at Night

How to do Long Exposure Photography and Light Trails at Night A Post By: Barry J Brady Gastown light trails, Vancouver, Canada Before I understood how photography worked, I was always intrigued by light trails in images. I never understood how that happened. When I began to study photography, one of the first assignments I did was an advanced course on night photography. I decided I would try and capture some light trails. I set up my camera, made sure the settings were correct and waited. A few cars went past, but my timing was off and the shots were not great. I continued to wait. After about an hour of trying and experimenting, I got the shot I was...

New camera app features in Apple’s iOS 8

New camera app features in Apple’s iOS 8 We wrote yesterday about some of the imaging related changes that Apple announced with the latest version of its mobile operating system, iOS 8, at its annual developers event WWDC. Now that users have had a day or so to play with the developers’ beta version of iOS 8, a few more photo features have been discovered that were not mentioned in the keynote. Here’s a quick summary: Time-Lapse Mode There is a good selection of time lapse apps available in the App Store but Apple has now apparently decided to integrate this feature into the standard camera app. Next to Video and...

Vertu Signature Touch comes with Hasselblad-certified camera If you’ve always been toying with the idea of getting a Hasselblad camera, but found the real thing too bulky and the rebadged Sony cameras too ridiculous, smartphone manufacturer Vertu has just given you another option. Vertu’s latest model, the Signature Touch, comes with a “Hasselblad-certified” camera.  The press release is a little vague in explaining what that exactly means but says “Vertu has worked with Hasselblad, the world’s most renowned professional photography brand, to perfect the image tuning of the camera onboard Signature Touch”...

Is Visiting the Racetrack Playa in Death Valley Worth It?

Is Visiting the Racetrack Playa in Death Valley Worth It? A Post By: James Brandon I probably won’t ever go again. That’s how bad it’s gotten. Not unless something changes. If you’re into travel and landscape photography you’ve likely either been to or have on your bucket list the Racetrack Playa in Death Valley National Park. I’ve been twice now, which is really a lot harder than it sounds if you haven’t been before. In this article, I want to go over my current thoughts on this peculiar and incredible place and the impact that tourists and photographers are having on it. I think it’s an important dialogue to open up, so I hope...

Step By Step How to Make Panoramic HDR Images

Step By Step How to Make Panoramic HDR Images A Post By: Barry J Brady Panoramic HDR image of Coal Harbour – Vancouver, Canada I am convinced that digital photography has changed so many aspects of photography forever.  HDR and photo stitching are just two of those aspects. In the film era you could achieve a lot in the darkroom with blending, dodging and burning, but not to the extent that HDR allows us to achieve now. Photostitching has also allowed us to produce images that were not possible a few years ago. In the days of film, panoramic images were possible, but required a camera made for that purpose, nowadays we can shoot...

Full speed ahead: Sony a6000 Review

For me, the major con is that it does not have a microphone jack for higher end microphones. I actually like the fact that it does not have a touch screen. I have used touch screens before and I always found them irritating. While, I have only handled this camera briefly, it seems to be a solid camera. If Sony were to offer an A7000, I would like to see a MIC jack added and possibly internal 4HD. But, I am not that big into making videos, so the latter point is that that crucial to me. Perhaps, they can take out the AA filter too. That said, there are a couple of lenses I would like to see...

Nikon sets aside 1.8 billion yen to cover D600 warranty repairs

Loyal D600 owners insisted that the “problem” was imaginary or exagerated by Canonite trolls. One could clean the sensor or, by using the camera very little, never see a sludge problem at all. Loyal owners never whined or sent their units for repair or replacement. Loyal owners were chagrined when Nikon “went wobbly” and offered the D610 with a “fix” for the problem. Loyal owners have the Nikon emblem and five stars tatooed on their head, chest, biceps, and behind. The Marines borrowed the Semper Fe motto from Nikonites. Just ask Santa or the Easter Bunny....

Nokia Lumia 1020 used in medical research

Nokia Lumia 1020 used in medical research Histopathology is the examination of body tissue and not a subject we usually write much about on Dpreview Connect. However, last month a scientific paper was published in the Histopathology journal, in which the authors, Dr. Mark Li-cheng Wu and Dr. John Paul Graff, describe how they’ve used a Nokia Lumia 1020 smartphone to identify a type of bacteria. The Nokia Blog sat down with Dr. Wu and Dr. Graff, who are experts in the field of photomicrography, to find out more about how and why the Lumia device was used.  In the interview the scientists explain how the Lumia 1020...

In iOS 8, Apple brings welcome refinements to Photos app

In iOS 8, Apple brings welcome refinements to Photos app As we’ve come to expect, Apple is using its annual developers’ conference in San Francisco to announce new versions of its desktop and mobile operating systems. Along with a host of refinements in iOS 8 is a revamped Photos app, with improved native retouching options, better search, more complete iCloud integration and support for third party retouching apps as ‘extensions’. In iOS 7, photo retouching was effectively limited to redeye removal and a one touch ‘auto-enhance’ options. One-shot, universal brightness adjustments can lead to unwanted...

Pocket movie maker? We examine the Sony RX100 III’s video mode

Well Jay, That was a boring rant, did you get to spew enough cliches? You seem a bit confused. Where have I said much about any studio shots posted at DPR? I have said a few things over the years, but I don’t pay a lot of attention to studio shots. “pixel peeping”? Hardly, and you can’t really cite an example. I do look at shadows, for noise. Now, looking at these Sony RX100m3 studio shots (raws) I see why some think the focus is odd. Noise looks to be about like the RX10, but it’s hard to tell since only Sony’s IDC-4 extracts these raws today, June 1,...
