Panasonic has announced its Lumix DMC-FZ1000 superzoom camera, which features a 1″-type CMOS sensor and F2.8-4.0, 25-400mm equivalent lens. The sensor is not only the same size as on Sony’s Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 – it’s also the same resolution (20.1MP). As for lens cleaning solutions, after several tries, including a product offered by a major filter manufacturer, I have grown weary of using them. Can’t shake the feeling that they indeed tend to create more problems than they solve (what you so aptly call ‘rainbow’ smearing certainly rings a bell). Alastair, the saying was fairly common in the film days. I heard it quite a few times before I was even involved in photography (beyond using a 35mm compact) so I’m surprised you hadn’t! I wasn’t being ironic at all; I was talking about the mid-range lineup as a group. But I’m not convinced about the 35/2 IS either. Samsung used to have some pretty decent Wolfson DACs on their phones early on, but they were still using their own SoC back then… They moved away from that at one point, no clue if the same parts mate with the Qualcomm SoC everyone are using these days or what they’re using on the tablets though. There’s one point I missed in this otherwise well articulated opinion : the historical perspective. Several ears ago, “bridge” meant something completelly different than the “superzoom” of today. Panasonic has announced its Lumix DMC-FZ1000 superzoom camera, which features a 1″-type CMOS sensor and F2.8-4.0, 25-400mm equivalent lens. As for the clicking wheel – i simply don’t care, i don’t need it, and i’ll for sure snap a RX100 III when it’s somehow much cheaper, say at fall/winter 2015 or even later – i do have time, and i do have enough cameras (OMG, G.A.S syndrome) to play with into the meantime, and grabbing good shots. As ya’ll knew – it’s not the camera, it’s the person behind the lens…good photographs are even possible with iso100 and almost every cheap digicam nowadays…not technically, of course, but from composition, even a cheap holga...

Good information, but I have to comment on the opening “Lightroom 5 is a powerful program, but that power comes at the expense of a learning curve that some find pretty steep.” The learning curve describes how quickly the effort of doing something goes down as you do more of it. A steep learning curve means you learn quickly and easily, so the effort drops a lot in a hurry. If you meant to say that Lightroom can be difficult to learn, this opening has it backwards. For me, the major con is that it does not have a microphone jack for higher end microphones. I actually like the fact that it does not have a touch screen. I have used touch screens before and I always found them irritating. While, I have only handled this camera briefly, it seems to be a solid camera. If Sony were to offer an A7000, I would like to see a MIC jack added and possibly internal 4HD. But, I am not that big into making videos, so the latter point is that that crucial to me. Well Jay, That was a boring rant, did you get to spew enough cliches? You seem a bit confused. Where have I said much about any studio shots posted at DPR? I have said a few things over the years, but I don’t pay a lot of attention to studio shots. “pixel peeping”? Hardly, and you can’t really cite an example. I do look at shadows, for noise. Now, looking at these Sony RX100m3 studio shots (raws) I see why some think the focus is odd.
