The Last Goodbye: How To Shut Down A Failing Product By Kevin Stone May 19th, 2014 BusinessProduct Strategy 6 Comments The true power of the web has always depended on the open nature of its technology. Anyone who’s interested can create a website, and anyone with an idea could turn out the next Facebook. Technology takes no heed of gender, creed or race, but is reduced down to code and the desire to create. This great power has produced unbounded enthusiasm, and everyone you meet has an idea for the “next great website or app.†Buried within this enthusiasm, however, is the harsh...

A Post By: Gavin Hardcastle If you want to take your landscape photography to the next level, it’s time to start thinking about how you balance your subjects. The most powerful compositional tools that you have at your disposal are your knees, and your feet. Simply stepping to the side a couple of feet can change your landscape compositions drastically. Take things one step further (weak pun intended) and bend those old knees to get a lower point of view. Now things might start to look more interesting. The reason why I say this is because horizontal and vertical movement will allow you to...

A Post By: Charlie Borland Photography has never been more important to selling real estate than it is today. The markets are heating up again and demand for real estate creates demand for photography. This is good news to photographers, but like any business, there is plenty of competition. If you are new to real estate and architecture photography, here are some general guidelines to start you on the right path. Camera Equipment A camera, lens, and tripod, are all that is required to get started, but you might quickly learn that many competitors are very proficient at using supplemental...

Actually, I listen sports talk radio & classic rock if you must know. I’m also more libertarian than conservative, but don’t let that stop you from applying a stereotype you have dreamed up. So you wake up in your parents basement somewhere around 11 or 12, and if your lucky and it’s the 1st or the 15th, you put on your house shoes and head out to the mailbox to collect your check that people like me fund. You come in, catch up on your Media Matters reading and turn on MSNBC to be told what to think and what to be outraged about. Oh yeah, scream F’n Republicans!!...

We’ve seen a few interesting panoramic camera projects over the past few months but none of them capture panoramic video. Centr, which was launched by former Apple engineers and currently in the Kickstarter stage, is aiming to fill this gap. The camera is a doughnut-shaped device that records 360-degree video at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second.  This is achieved by stitching together footage from four separate full-HD camera modules in real time. The resulting video can be interactively seen on a special viewer on the centrcam.com website or through a dedicated app on...

I can’t help bu think that people are just barking at the wrong tree with this wheel.. IMHO it’s not the wheel, but the overall design (wheel + its UI) that is, well, sub-par, to say the least. I would have loved it, clicks or not, if not this awkward behavior of first entering the, say, zoom mode with first rotation, and only then, with second rotation, actually changing the focal length (in fixed focal lengths mode). Imaging you drive a car, turn steering wheel, and the car, instead of turning, displays nice diagram on HUD with “Turn mode, please turn the wheel again to...

Moving A Git Repository To A New Server By Nik Sumeiko May 19th, 2014 GitTutorialsVersion control 3 Comments Suppose your company decides to change its code-hosting provider or you wish to move your own Git repository to a different host. It doesn’t happen often, but it happens. When I had to move a number of Git projects to a new host, it took me quite some time to find an accurate method. Having made many attempts, and a couple of fails, and carefully reading Git’s documentation, I found a solid and effective way. I thought, then, that every developer would benefit from knowing how to...

Part TwoDesign Principles: Space And The Figure-Ground Relationship By Steven Bradley May 16th, 2014 CreativityDesign PrinciplesInspiration 9 Comments If you see graphic design as a process of arranging shapes on a canvas, then you’re only seeing half of what you work with. The negative space of the canvas is just as important as the positive elements that we place on the canvas. Design is an arrangement of both shapes and space. To work more effectively with space, you must first become aware of it and learn to see it — learn to see the shapes that space forms and how space...

Team Collaboration And Closing Efficiency Gaps In Responsive Design By Brian Krall May 15th, 2014 MobileResponsive Web DesignWorkflow 2 Comments Responsive design ushers in complexities that require a more involved design and implementation process. Because of this, the effort has piled up on the front end. Working in silos, where you talk to each other only occasionally or during scheduled meetings, has too many unknowns. Let’s look at how these new challenges create opportunities to work together better. We have to kill the mentality that there is an assembly line of workers waiting for...

A Post By: John Davenport We often get to see inside the bags of professional photographers. You know, the bag that we dream of having ourselves, filled with three full-frame bodies and six or more lenses with plenty of accessories to fill out every pocket the bag has to offer. Well, I’m not a pro – and today’s ‘inside the bag’ post might not be something to drool over, but it should give you an idea of what you can do on a reasonable budget if you’re planning to do some serious photography on the weekends. Inside the bag of a hobby photographer on a budget As you can see from...

Nice job! CC: For LR it would be great if the global buttons were available in the shortcut mapper for every module. For example I’m in the library module and want to know the short cut for crop, I should not have to go looking around for it, it’s right there on the R key in the library module but with your system I need to bop over to the develop or global module to see how to crop from the library module. This would make the tool a better workflow aid (something to have up while using LR) instead of a learning module (Now I will learn the global keys, here is the map, now I...

There are ways to do this much more simply and more compact as long as you’re willing to go with just one cellular network at a time and keep an eye on it. No backpack required – just your pockets, or a pocket of the backpack/camera bag you already use. The truth is you should have all 4 cellular networks at your disposal when possible – there are places where only one network works that well, and it could be any of them. This cellular bonding technology can be essential for video, but can be overkill in many photo applications. It still doesn’t hurt – as long...

A Post By: Simon Ringsmuth When you go out to take photos it can be tempting to start shooting right away with the goal of getting the ideal image or capturing the perfect picture. But before you get your camera out, it might be good to take the opposite approach and slow down. Way down. Let’s take a minute to consider some lessons you can learn from the age-old tale of the tortoise and the hare. Ironically, one of the most important things you can do when inspiration strikes is to move slowly like the tortoise, rather than rush along like the hare. The tortoise might not have been the...

Excellent work! Really a great way to demo the various techniques, most of which are normally used for astrophotography. As impressive as the close-ups are, I don’t think they fit-in as well… the transition is too abrupt. The write-up on the WWW site ties things together better. A Post By: Gavin Hardcastle If you’re in the market for an ultra portable robotic tripod head that pans and tilts and is super easy to setup, you’ll be wanting to take a look at the Syrp Genie. The guys at Syrp have done their Kickstarter backers proud with a solid product that looks as good as it performs. While it can’t pan and tilt at the same time, the Genie has a little trick up its sleeve to add an extra layer of motion control to its arsenal. When you want to put the Genie on to a slider you won’t need any extra motors or cables to get things moving. The Genie comes complete...

“Superzoom crapbox”? Er, OK. I carry travel zooms now, after watching my wife get better shots than me with a 480mm equivalent “superzoom crapbox”, while I got poorly framed (but nice to pixel peep!) shots with my enthusiast compact. I guess if you are shooting flowers in the yard, you can endlessly reframe shot after shot. It doesn’t work like that for me in the wild, either traveling in unknown cities where there are buildings on a distant hillside I would like to fill the frame, or the other day, when I went for a walk and got some wide-angle shots of a...

Congrats to Tokina for embracing the tech.In the past, most of Tokina AF lenses for Nikon would omit internal autofocus motor and rely on Nikon DSLR motor-pin screw drive AF. Nevertheless, I love that decision, maybe DSLR body AF motor coupling sounds outdated, but I guess there’d be less chance that AF motor in you lenses could go bad. Sure DSLR body AF motor could go bad as well, but in case of Nikon, usually would take ages. My D1x (about a decade old) could still drive those big 80-200/2.8 AF lenses no problem, heck, I could even feel it’s momentum torque during AF. Source...

The RX100 III’s zoom now extends across a 24-70mm equivalent range, with a maximum aperture of F1.8-2.8, a great improvement on the 28-100mm, F1.8-4.9 lenses sported by the existing two models. All is just a question of point of view. For someone that is in video, it is a bad compromise to a full pro video camera, it is a good compromise if one considers the price compared to a full pro video camera and the low light ability in this matter. For stills it is just a flop, the good old reworked D700 sensor with his D70 resolution and FF dynamics, that can serve for nice downsized shots at low light. For that price, it is too expensive, starts noising at 6500 iso just like any sensor, loses details at 3200 iso, like any sensor, and depends on good software cheats to make a good...

The Google Photo Sphere 360-degree panorama feature was introduced in November 2012 with version 4.2 of the Android mobile OS. However, until now, viewing 360-degree panoramas not created with Google Camera or a compatible app was a slightly cumbersome process. You had to manually add a XMP metadata file to your images in order to view them as a Photo Sphere in Google Plus. Google has now changed that with an update to Google+. You can now easily view 360-degree panoramas created manually with images from a DSLR or compact camera in the Google+ Photo Sphere viewer. To do that you...

A Post By: Mike Newton Today you are going to come ride along with me as I shoot head shots for a client in San Diego, California. I was hired by a company to create simple head shots of their instructors in the San Diego area. There is a very big market for head shots and quite a few people want them shot on a white infinity backdrop. There are many ways to do this but I’m going to take you along on a shoot with me and show you how I do it: Step by step how to do a head shot on a white background First off, what is a seamless backdrop? It’s a giant roll of paper – thats it! I used an...

A Post By: Skyler Burt Food photography is arguably one of the most challenging types of photography out there. Like painting, you start with a blank canvas and build. Layer upon layer, you construct the photo until you reach the perfect balance of reality and art. Everything in the photo is a decision. Every piece is perfectly placed by the photographer. Starting out is frustrating, I know. You’re the chef, stylist, and the photographer. Once you reach technical proficiency with the camera, what’s next? I have been, and in a lot of ways still am, in that position. So, how do you improve...

At this point, there are no firmware updates for E-P5 to resolve the shutter shock issue. However, we are planning to update the firmware for E-P5 similar to “anti-shock 0sec” as well. Please wait for the update to be released for a while. We are sorry but...

Nokia’s Camera Beta for Windows Phone is arguably one of the best camera apps for enthusiast users. It combines comprehensive manual control with an excellent user interface. We look forward to using it each time we get to review a Nokia Lumia device. Now Nokia has released an update that makes the app even better. It now supports Living Images, which is an update to Nokia’s Cinemagraph “software lens.” Continuous autofocus and surround sound capture are also new in this latest version. Unfortunately these new features are only supported by the very latest...

1) The previous anti-shock mode was different. It worked by closing the shutter, waiting the specified delay, then making the exposure conventionally using the mechanical shutter. This reduced shock by separating the shutter closing and opening actions. The new anti-shock mode is different, because the exposure doesn’t start when the physical shutter opens. Instead it’s fractionally delayed (by ~1/40sec), and then started using an electronic first curtain. So in fact, we’re correct, and Olympus is also correct. It’s just that unlike Canon/Sony etc, Olympus’s...

Responsive Images Done Right: A Guide To <picture> And srcset By Eric Portis May 14th, 2014 JavaScriptMobileResponsive Web Design 0 Comments On Monday, we published an article on Picturefill 2.0, a perfect polyfill for responsive images. Today’s article complements Tim Wright’s article and explains exactly how we can use the upcoming <picture> element and srcset, with simple fallbacks for legacy browsers. A Post By: Jake Hicks The longer you shoot, the larger the repertoire of subjects and assignments you photograph becomes. You start off photographing flowers in the garden, your neighbour’s dog, your sister’s kids, your friend’s wedding and then before you know it you’re doing product shots for your friend’s new company. All this happens over time and there is one pretty fundamental skill that must remain paramount throughout out your process, properly focused images. Sure we’ve all been there, we’ve all taken that shot once in while which is slightly soft (a polite...

A Post By: Gavin Hardcastle Have you ever used Photoshop’s ‘Content Aware Fill’ tool to get rid of some unsightly object in your otherwise perfect image? Have you ever cropped your image in order to give it a more pleasing composition? I know I’ve done both on many an occasion and I feel no guilt or remorse whatsoever. The Plastic Bag You Didn’t Notice Here’s an example of a shot I took at Monument Valley in Utah. The foreground was completely covered in litter, so while editing I decided to cut out the more obvious offenders like this plastic bag. Should I have left it in? What...

Olympus has updated the firmware of its PEN E-P5 mirrorless camera, introducing improved Wi-Fi remote control functionality and a ‘0 sec’ anti-shock setting. The latter should help prevent blurred images at certain shutter speeds – our main gripe when we reviewed the camera. There’s also an update for the Stylus 1 enthusiast compact with similarly-enhanced Wi-Fi control. Both updates are available to download and install now, using the Olympus Digital Camera updater program. The new Wi-Fi features also require the latest version of the Olympus Image Share app. Click...

Finally, proof that the internal commander mode was flakier than a good croissant. I can’t find much to fault in the third party battery wars. I owned a few in D2X days, and they all died of various causes at about 1 year or so, where the Nikon batteries soldiered on heartily. I also know of several people who had camera damage or charger damage (in two cases, fires) with third party batteries. The system complexity of today’s cameras is so massive that the odds are against smooth integration of third party batteries. For really casual shooters, it may not matter much because...

A Post By: Bruce Wunderlich Most of the new cameras from both Nikon and Canon now have the capability to create multiple exposures. The technique is rather simple to set up, but the results can be both unlimited and unpredictable. So try using this feature to create some unique floral images. Set-up Select Multiple Exposure from your camera’s menu. The default option on this setting is, of course, OFF. Select the ON option. Some cameras will give you the option here for ON (series) which will keep the option on until you turn it off or ON (single photo) which will capture only one...

Canon has officially announced a pair of new lenses. The first is an EF 16-35mm F4L IS USM lens, which is a cheaper version of the existing F2.8L model. The IS system offers 4 stops of shake reduction according to CIPA standards, and features a nine-blade circular aperture. For cameras that support EF-S lenses, there’s also a new 10-18mm F4.5-5.6 IS STM model, which is equivalent to 16-29mm on APS-C bodies. The 10-18mm is both smaller and lighter than the existing 10-22mm lens, and its stepping motor allows for fast and silent focusing while recording video. The two lenses will be...

Parrot, the maker of the popular AR Drone 2.0, has launched a new model, the AR Drone 3.0. It also flies under the name Bebop. The Bebop is essentially a flying camera with four rotors. The camera comes with an F2.2 fisheye lens with a 180-degree field of view and a 14MP sensor. No information on sensor size has been given yet. It also appears the Bebop uses a system similar to the electronic video stabilization we’ve seen in some recent smartphones. It captures a larger image than it needs, crops it, and uses the “surplus” areas of the video for stabilization and...

i think it’s more filling out a full “consumer grade” zoom lens lineup and the prosumer f/4.0 line. what’s still missing from canon now though is a consumer grade FF lens lineup and a prosumer EF-S lineup – For FF, the 28-135 is pretty old in the tooth and the 17-55 EF-S stands alone with maybe the 10-22mm for EF-S. One could argue that with 17-40/4 and 24-105/4 selling so cheaply that is currently canon’s intention and why they will probably will still sell those lenses. however, three full lines – two for full frame (16-35,24-70,70-200) one at 2.8...

Picturefill 2.0: Responsive Images And The Perfect Polyfill By Tim Wright May 12th, 2014 CSSJavaScriptResponsive Web Design 3 Comments Not since the early days of web standards have I seen our community rally around a seemingly small issue: responsive images. Over the last four years (yeah, it’s been about four years), we’ve seen many permutations of images in responsive design. From the lazier days of setting max-width: 100% (the absolute minimum you should be doing) to more full-featured JavaScript implementations, such as Picturefill and Zurb’s data-interchange method, we’ve spent...

A Post By: Andrew S. Gibson In earlier articles I gave you advice about planning a portrait shoot and some reasons for using natural light. Now it’s time to take a look at something that many photographers find difficult – posing. The reason posing can create problems is because inexperienced models will look to you for direction. If your model is waiting for you to tell her what to do and you freeze up or don’t have any decent ideas you will struggle to create good photos. It’s up to you to take charge and tell the model how to pose. The key is preparation – you need a set of...

Seene is a free app for iOS that lets you capture and share interactive and three dimensional images, just like Instagram and Vine do for 2D-images and videos respectively. On your iPhone, Seene’s images move as you tilt your device, revealing a 3D effect. On web browsers that support WebGL – like Chrome, Firefox, and Safari – the same effect can be seen when you move your cursor over the image. We published a hands-on with Seene in October last year. The makers of the app, Obvious Engineering, are now showing off a preview of a forthcoming feature. Soon Seene will...

A Post By: Kav Dadfar The one thing that I always wish for on any trip is more time, but I also think that no matter how long I have somewhere I will always wish I had an extra day, week or month. As a photographer, you will rarely have the luxury of time, whether you are on an assignment or a personal trip. The reality is that there are so many things to photograph, in so many different way,s that you could spend a lifetime just photographing one city and get vastly different results every day. So making the most of your limited time is absolutely essential in maximizing the output of a...

A Post By: Barry J Brady Try to make your HDR images look as realistic as possible If you have been photographing for more than a year or two, you will have heard about HDR (which stands for High Dynamic Range). We have probably seen them, the “overcookedâ€, over processed HDR images that float around the photo websites. For some photographers, the process seems to force them to overdo their images and after a while that seems to be the only result they are trying to achieve. Do a Google search on “bad HDR†and you will see what I mean. The images have halos, the colours are surreal...

I always thought cave photography was such hard work, being a caver for a few years myself. There is dust, mud, condensation, the technical difficulties of the cave itself & reliance on the other cavers to have as much patience as yourself etc etc BUT when you achieve end results like this, it must just keep you going. It makes above ground photography seem a piece of cake.Absolutely superb … thank you for the article. “I was out in my back yard, when I happened upon a praying mantis on a frog’s back! Is nature great, or what?! Then, I walked a little further, and I saw a snail on a toadstool! OMFG! Can you believe it! So, I ran into the house to get some tinsel, glue, and my bokiest lens, and I came back, glued that F’er down and made art! Next week, I’m going to catch me a squirrel and super glue a walnut in it’s mouth for a formal portrait.” Source Article from...

Efficiently Simplifying Navigation, Part 2: Navigation Systems By Anastasios Karafillis May 9th, 2014 NavigationTechniquesUser Experience 2 Comments How do we make navigation as simple and predictable as possible? As explained in part 1 of this series, the first two steps are to structure content in a way that naturally narrows the navigation options, and to explain those options in a way that minimizes the cognitive load on users. However, two more steps are required — namely, to choose the right type of navigation menu, and then to design it. The second part of this series addresses the...

More than just a few, unfortunately. He way overdid it. He made it all about the round circles in the bokeh. It’s like he’s showing off how he can do this, rather than making beautiful images. There are nice colors in many of them, but the overdone bokeh is just distracting. The circles aren’t placed perfectly enough to add to the subject, so instead they take over the whole image. It would be better if he toned them down in PP, rather than accentuating them. Source Article from...

I hope they take retail seriously because even when they took over the Penn Camera where I was, nothing changed. It was the same terrible customer service and without that warm greeting. Companies are surprised that they do bad and business closes down. A huge part of it is pure first line greeting and customer service. Online has a huge advantage because it’s the same thing as shopping by yourself in a real store. This is just my perspective with my one particular store, and even if it doesn’t represent the whole it’s still a part of the problem. Source Article from...

According to a report by Engadget, Apple has hired Nokia’s head of Lumia imaging, Ari Partinen. Partinen sent out a tweet saying today was his last day at Nokia and that in June he’ll be starting “a new chapter in Cupertino.” In a later tweet he confirmed the company he’ll be working for in Cupertino is indeed Apple.  With their excellent optical image stabilization and high-resolution sensors that enable lossless digital zoom and clever downscaling, Nokia’s Lumia devices, especially the 808 and 1020, are widely regarded as the smartphone cameras...

Proper WordPress Filesystem Permissions And Ownerships By Benjamin Intal May 8th, 2014 SecurityServersTechniques (WP) 14 Comments When people talk about WordPress security, file permissions and ownership are usually the last thing on their minds. Installing security plugins is a good practice and a must for every WordPress website. However, if your file-system permissions aren’t set up correctly, most of your security measures could be easily bypassed by intruders. Permissions and ownership are quite important in WordPress installations. Setting these up properly on your Web server should...

There is a period of time each day, just before sunrise and just after sunset, when the sun is below the horizon, when the light is known as “sweet light.†This period of time is known as “The Blue Hour.†This is a period of time each morning and evening when there is neither full daylight, nor full darkness. Cystic Fibrosis is an incurable, life-shortening genetic disease which affects roughly 70,000 people around the globe. Commonly thought of as a childhood disease, photographer Ian Pettigrew was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis at the age of 37. Late diagnosis is relatively rare, but advances in medical technology over the past few decades also mean more and more CF victims who were diagnosed as children are surviving into adulthood. Ian Pettigrew is a Canada-based photographer who was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis as an adult. He’s currently rasing money for a portrait photography...

We’ve seen almost all smartphone manufacturers put an emphasis on camera performance with their latest models. Now Chinese manufacturer Vivo is upping the ante with the Xshot. The new model is a high-end Android phone with a clear focus on the camera and imaging performance. The Xshot comes with a 13MP Sony camera module that features an F1.8 lens, the fastest we have seen on a smartphone in recent history. In combination with optical image stabilization, this should make for decent low light performance. There’s also a two-stage shutter button and like the iPhone 5s and...

How about a better battery for the phone? Come on, Apple. Oh, and more freedom for the user (in terms of syncing, cloud storage, etc.)? And I just bought a new Dell with specs equal to a Mac but at half the price. Obviously Apple makes outstanding products, and I have a few (Ipod, Iphone, Ipad), but they aren’t as in the lead as they used to be in these areas, and are actually falling behind in some others. What Apple needs to do is meet the needs of users more efficiently or invent something that everyone will want (or need) that others haven’t thought up yet. And for goodness...

A Post By: Soumya Shankar Ghosal While visiting an art gallery or a photography exhibition, at times you may have noticed certain landscape photographs have extremely elongated fields of view. They seem quite impossible to have been photographed with a standard camera. If you wonder how such elongated photographs are made, you are not alone. I had my first encounter with a panoramic image of the Himalayan mountain range being displayed at Das Studios in Darjeeling, a Himalayan resort town in West Bengal, India. That photograph had a huge impact on me and it led me to searching for ways and...

I’ve used the string before, but never from both feet. Another steadying DIY device I’ve used quite a bit, is a small fat bean bag, and a short 12, or 18 inch bungee cord. Place the bean bag on the post, fence rail, tree, or whatever you find, then the camera goes next, keeping the bean bag between the object, and the camera, then strap it all down with the bungee cord wrapped around everything. The bean bag makes it possible to steadily adjust the direction the camera points, rather than depending on the angle of the post. Finger pokes to the bean bag do wonders in adjusting the...

While the latest generation of smartphones can in many ways rival traditional compact cameras, the lack of true long exposure functionality on most phones is a limitation and means taking images in very low light or capturing light and star trails is simply not possible. However, now there’s an app for that. NightCap was one of the first apps to enable long exposure capture on the iPhone and now its maker Interealtime has launched NightCap Pro, an enhanced version that adds iPad support, low-light video recording, a “light booster” and two ultra-long exposure modes...

An image from the Kodak Super XX film Derek Wong bought in Michigan. The next time you’re in a thrift shop or antique store, keep a lookout for photographic treasures. While old cameras are always eye-catching, the images captured with those cameras are often more intriguing as Mike Ames and Derek Wong discovered.  Ames came across a number of small tins of developed Kodak Panatomic film in a Roanoke, Virginia thrift store and once he saw that the negatives were in good condition, he purchased the tins and had the film scanned. In all, Ames now has more than 400 historic images...

Kinda disappointing… but it’s a Canon, so Silver Award anyway? 😉 I actually used to be a big fan of the Canon G1 and then the G5, but this doesn’t seem to have a great sensor and the touch screen is a poor excuse for not having either an optical finder or, better, an EVF. Actually, I think the touch screen is great for video (as an alternative to pulling focus), but this camera does mediocre video — is Canon just trying to attract cell phone users who want some DoF control? The G1X is supported by CHDK, so hopefully the Mark II will be, and that would be a plus. Then...

Six Common Problems With The UX Process, And Six Solutions! By Chris Day May 7th, 2014 Interaction DesignUsabilityUser Experience 0 Comments How robust is your user experience design process? We all have our favored methods and techniques, but the general process is similar: Conduct research, prototype, then present to stakeholders and users. We’ve delivered projects successfully, rectified problems and honed our ability to deliver in different scenarios. However, we all know that every project is unique, and every once in a while something will take you by surprise. Every once in a while,...

Unicode For A Multi-Device World By John Holt Ripley May 6th, 2014 FontsMobileTypography 2 Comments A while ago, I was working on a website that required a number of icons. “No problem,†I thought. “I know how to handle this. I’ll use an @font-face icon set for high-resolution screens. It’ll be a single file, to reduce HTTP requests, and I’ll include just the icons that I need, to reduce file size.†“I’ll even use a Unicode character as the base of the icon, so that if @font-face isn’t supported, then the user will still see something like the intended icon.†I felt...

A Post By: James Maher Gowanus Fire Hydrant I have always been fascinated with great photography taken in areas that people might commonly refer to as ‘boring.’ I use the word boring because that is the specific word I most often see used as an excuse for people having trouble with their photography. Someone will say, “I wish I lived somewhere more interesting and beautifulâ€or “I can’t do interesting work where I live. It’s too boring.â€. Can you relate to that? What these people don’t realize is that what might seem boring and routine to them could seem fascinating to...

What’s your point? Mine is that all ooc jpegs are already processed. Ooc jpegs aren’t reality, even if you haven’t touched them since they came from the camera. An ooc could have been processed with a pinhole, miniature, dramatic, etc. art filter, but even if it wasn’t, it was processed in some way. It reflects a choice, if not on your part, then on the part of the camera manufacturer, who chose a default processing standard. Detecting artifacts from multiple saves proves nothing. The image may subjectively (or objectively, even) reflect reality more faithfully after...

What did she actually say?Her English is so hard to understand that it nearly made me stop looking at the video. Although the idea by itself is nice. Its never a good idea to hold a camera in one hand while holding a flash in the other. You’ll loose a lot of stability even though the flash freezes your movement. Also not of much use to those photographers that don’t understand how to operate a flash in manual mode. Many will get horrible results by using these simple wireless hotshoes as their flash will overpower the subject they want to photograph. For those that know how to use...

Just tested the studio tool with the D4s and the NEX-5T (a fairly modern APS-C/DX camera), and found that their ISO capacity did vary that much: I selected incandescent light, and the patch of greenery in the upper right corner. Set the ISO to 102400, which the 5T can’t follow, so stopped at 25600, and as far as I can see (I use a calibrated iMac) there was little difference in noise, at that setting. Menas a camera that costs maybe a tenth of the D4s can deliver almost the same image quality, just two ISO steps behind! Tried the D610 as well, but that doesn’t go any further...
