Unless someone was in your studio, and saw/videoed/photographed your setup, how could Amazon claim that their “method” was infringed upon? “You’ve got no shadows! …you must have used our patented methodology.” IMHO, if you are a studio shooter and you can’t suss out how to effectively remove shadows from your background, you may want to consider a new vocation. So, what am I missing here? Granted, I do not live in the US, but I am a tad concerned that this madness...

A Post By: David Julian I’ve discovered a flexible companion for all weather action, adventure, and family fun. I’d been researching the ideal pocket-sized, waterproof, and shock-resistant camera to take to Hawaii for one of my Land and Sea Photography workshops. I’d compared every “tough†camera available online, but not one jumped out and said “Buy Me!†Besides the full DSLR kit that I’d haul to the islands, I wanted to test and demonstrate a well-featured compact for capturing outdoor sports and vacation adventures. Almost every small durable camera available had been on...

A Post By: Ryan Pendleton As long as art has existed, so too has the self-portrait. Van Gogh famously painted more than 30 self-portraits, using the available subject-of-self as both an outlet for his artistic talents, and as a method for perfecting his craft. Rembrandt, as perhaps the most prolific master of the self-portrait, painted, etched and drew more than 100 images of himself throughout his lifetime. One can even imagine the cavemen as having injected some degree of self into the prehistoric images painted on their cave walls. Self-portraiture is NOT the same as a Selfie But as rich...

I think a better solution would be a permit process allowing for only so many permits per area of the park, maybe with some areas off limits, only on select days. It could be made very restrictive—such as one day a month, which could be posted for all to see on their web page and at the park entrances. Also, in the event of a crash, if the users don’t retrieve, then they are billed the full amount of retrieval, not matter how much it costs. Decibel levels could be set, plus all sorts of other restrictions. When I think of some of the other stuff that goes on in the parks, it...

Very interesting post as usual, Erez. Having seen your earlier posts, I looked at the finished image first imagining the PP tweeks you most likely did, and for the most part I was spot on. I’m not saying that to boast, but just to let you know that your contributions have actually teached me a thing or two about postprocessing 😉 One tweek I assumed incorrectly was some selective blurring on the foreground. I guess the reason why it looked like that to me is the not-so-increased contrast in the lowermost area, together with blurring due to the tilt-shift setup? Anyway, if it was my...

Fostering Healthy Non-Professional Relationships By Jeremy Girard May 5th, 2014 Communication, Opinion Column, Workflow 0 Comments As Web designers and developers, we invest a lot of time and effort in nurturing professional relationships, including those with clients, prospective clients, coworkers, peers and others in the industry. A Post By: Paul Timpa Using layers in your photo editing software is one of the most important things you can do to create great images. Layers are so powerful, even the most basic understanding of them can improve your photography tremendously. The good news is that using layers is extremely easy, and very quick. If you follow along with this tutorial and incorporate the techniques, you’ll see a huge difference in the quality of your images. While there are countless things you can do with layers, it’s convenient to group them into three main categories: Exposure blending Local...

A Post By: Mark Eveleigh Professional travel photographers realize that the key to their business is versatility: to be able to shoot all styles of photography, and to consistently capture great shots even under very trying conditions. To be a strong assignment photographer you must identify your weakness and then work on it. Instead of concentrating on what you shoot well why not break out of your comfort zone and try something more challenging? Well, in the corners, they could be better. Nevertheless, for 450 euros, it’s a decent offer – considerably better IQ at 24mm would only be available at three times the price and much bigger a package (talking about m43 offers – some small body with the Oly 12/2). I only wish it had GPS built-in. I hate having to spend sometimes hours on synchronizing my GPS tracks recorded with external GPS trackers to my photos after multi-day excursions / travels. (This is why, BTW, I tend to use the Nokia 808 for outdoor travel shooting. No need to struggle with GPS synching as it...

Wow, Sony, well done! You have really identified the world’s best photography. It’s not just skilled or technically impressive stuff, but clearly merits your World’s Photography Award. The second photo in this collection, 1st Place Architecture, what an impressive photo; the blurry underside of a suspension highway is so evocative and deeply symbolic, the lighting and composition so fabulous, the concept so original, that I imagine thousands of people everywhere are rushing to print it and hang it in their homes. It makes me want to throw my camera away. I used to think...

Responsive Design Begins With The URL By David Marland May 2nd, 2014 Content Strategy, Information Architecture, Responsive Web Design 5 Comments The BBC’s Programmes website is huge, and is intended to be a rolling archive of everything that the BBC broadcasts on television and radio. Originally released in 2007, it now has pages for over 1.6 million episodes, but that’s barely half of the story. Surrounding those episodes is a wealth of content, including clips, galleries, episode guides, character profiles and much more, plus Programme’s newly responsive home pages. The new...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt Earlier today I shared a set of images of cityscapes. That’s designed to inspire you, make you say “wow†and want to get out there and photograph your city. This week I’d like to challenge you to photograph close to home. If you live in a city, you’re all set! If you’re in the country or smaller town, you just need to get more creative or take a short drive. You’ll notice that many of the cityscape images in the collection are shot at night. That’s when the city and the lights really come to life and dance for the camera. Find the best location...

I will say, too, that software correction is absolutely an issue. It is true that in many cases it is minor and doesn’t make much of a difference. But in other cases it absolutely affects absolute image quality, and if you’re asking for 5x retail price for a camera based on premium lenses, software correction is a factor. The worst cases of software correction, in my experience, are when large barrel distortions are corrected in camera. If you want to see what this looks like, buy a Canon SX230HS travel zoom, install CHDK, and shoot raw, to see what the captured image circle...

A Post By: Phillip VanNostrand If you’ve ever tried taking pictures of someone (or something) that isn’t extremely cute and fluffy like a baby or a puppy, you’ll know it can sometimes be difficult to capture people in a flattering way. Some people are extremely shy or don’t like getting their picture taken. Others really do like having their pictures taken. Some even make a living getting their picture taken. They are called models, and today we are going to consider what it is like working with models. Where can you find a model to practice with? There are two ways to go about...

A Post By: Scott Umstattd You see plenty of landscape, portrait and commercial photographs every day on the web and in magazines. You can tell by the lighting, staging and seemingly overall perfection of everything in those pictures that days, maybe even weeks of planning were needed to pull of such amazing photographs. With that much planning, all that is left to do when it is time to take the picture is press the shutter. The photographer behind the lens probably even knew exactly what time she was going to press the shutter. In short, the photographer did everything necessary to prepare...

The dummy battery connector he’s using apparently has an active circuit inside and is designed for 7.4V-8.4V input, in which case 9V output from the battery is probably ok. Of course, that’s based on sketchy Amazon specs which also say “4V-8.4V” without specifying for what. I don’t put too much faith in those specs…. The real voltages are probably higher unless under heavy load, and there are probably regulators inside the camera that make that ok anyway. Those regulators might run hot, but having the battery outside the camera removes a major heat source....

The lens is also compatible with Nikon and Sony bodies. On a Canon crop factor camera body the lens provides a field of view equivalence of 240-960mm. The lens has fast, silent focusing, Vibration Compensation and eBAND (Extended Bandwidth and Angular-Dependency) lens coating in addition to the conventional BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) coating. A Post By: Andrew Faulk You hit the export button and now your shot is ready for your website, blog, Facebook photography page, or an email attachment to a client. Be honest with yourself. Why is it a great image? Many photographers fall into the trap of thinking an image is stellar because of its textbook perfection. Beware. “Regular Joe†isn’t as interested in technical precision as they are the story in the frame. Many photographers concentrate on leaving a shoot with that one glorious image. However, it is rare that a single picture is powerful enough to tell a larger story....

The Mark II features the same pixel count as its three-year-old forebear, but delivers it using a new 24MP sensor. The camera also gains a 79-point autofocus sensor, which it combines with the most sophisticated autofocus system on a Sony camera yet. In addition, the A77 II gains a ‘WhiteMagic’ RGBW LCD panel and Wi-Fi, along with all the processing improvements that come from the company’s latest Bionz processor. The power button and volume rocker are typically the only physical controls you’ll find on a smartphone as almost all functions are accessed via soft-buttons on the touchscreen these days. Sometimes a hard button can allow for quicker access to certain functions though. Dedicated camera shutter buttons, like on Nokia’s Lumia devices or the Sony Xperia Z1, are a good example. The Pressy button is a new accessory that adds an additional programmable hard button to your Android device. It slots into your smartphone’s headphone socket and once inserted is hardly visible....

A Post By: Andrew S. Gibson The Lightroom Graduated Filter is a versatile tool for making local adjustments to your photos. Don’t be fooled by the name – it may be named after a type of filter used for making skies darker in landscape photography, but its uses go far beyond that. Before we look at how you can use the Graduated Filter tool to improve your images, you may want to think about the style in which you’d like to process the photo. What is your ultimate aim? My article Finding and Achieving Your Style in Lightroom will give you some advice on figuring that out. Once you know...

A Post By: Rick Berk EOS-1D Mark IV with EF 24-105 f/4L IS. 1/500 at f/4, ISO 200. What is Golden Hour? My absolute favorite time to photograph anything is a time of day called the Golden Hour. The Golden Hour occurs during the time just before sunset, and just after sunrise. When the sun is lower in the sky, near the horizon, it must travel through more of the atmosphere, reducing the intensity of direct light and thus reducing the contrast in the scene. More blue light is scattered, so sunlight will appear reddish and shadows won’t be as deep as when the sun is higher in the sky. In...

“Photography is not rocket science. No need for dogmatic rules about which lens to use in what situation.” If you are trying to reduce facial distortion then there is no question that it is infallibly true that there is less at a longer distances. and the effect is significant from 85 to 135mm equiv. That’s a dogma for sure. If we are trying to ascribe rules of thumb of what appropriate focal lengths are for different situations (which, after all , is exactly why people call 85mm the classic portrait lens), then the rule of thumb is that 85mm is too short for a decently...

I think Samsung sales for NX cameras are not going well. After all, imho, the NX30 is mainly a NX300 + EVF in a bulky, plasticky, dslr like body. And is also quite expensive. Smartphone imaging components have improved a lot in recent years but the lack of an optical zoom is still a major disadvantage compared to traditional compact cameras. Samsung tried to bridge the gap with last year’s Galaxy S4 Zoom but the device ended up being bulkier than its smartphone cousin, the Galaxy S4, without offering the same high-end specification. It also didn’t convince us in our smartphone shootout either. Â Now Samsung is aiming to make its hybrid model more attractive to consumers and has launched the second generation of the Galaxy Zoom series. The new...

@DaveE1 As for your information Sony stock is rated JUNK at Wallstreet. Their Imaging division is loosing hundreds of millions of dollars every year, for years already. The innovation does NOT come from Sony imaging, but from their components division. Thats a very diffrent Sony then Sony Imaging. Sony Components is an OEM manufacturer delivering those patents to all companies that want to use their technology. They sell it out and receive money for letting them use their technology. Hence the reason why so many camera manufacturers are using Sony sensors. For so far your knowledge of large...

A project with images so emotion filled and powerful, images that reach into the souls of the people in the photographs and brings them out in the image. I reached out to him and asked him for an interview and he was most gracious to agree! So I’m proud to share this with you. Jim Mortram and his Small Town Inertia project. The interview is a bit long, but I promise you it’s worth it as we cover a gamut of topics and look through many of his images. If you want to learn...

A Post By: Roy Vieth Does your camera have the latest firmware? This topic is one that I often find myself explaining in more detail, and one that many people aren’t even aware that they can update their camera’s firmware, and how this may affect their digital camera. An analogy is to updating the version of software on your smart phone. What is firmware and why is it important? Inside your camera is a microprocessor (small computer), that uses software stored on non-removable flash memory inside your camera. This is called firmware and is the operating system of your camera which allows...

Yes, I agree with the article, but I would like to see a serius comparison of the different options available. Xrite, Datacolor, now which was new to me qpcard, any other options? Which work with Lightroom, which work with other software options such as aftershot, RawTherapee, ACDSee, just to mention three. AppleInsider has discovered another interesting Apple patent. This time the technology giant has patented a 3D-display system that projects digital images into a medium such as a non-linear crystal, using infrared lasers or similar technologies and accepts user input in the form of gestures. In practice, this means a hologram-type image is projected over a light source using two UFO-shaped parabolic mirrors. Users can then interact with the projection using gestures, such as touches and swipes. Those gestures are detected by lasers that send information about when and where their...

To Eleson: this is a very interesting question, which is next to “what’s art ?”. For sure there is no “perfect photography” and “darker or lighter shadows and mi-tones” is as it is always in art a question of tastes. Yet, the point Maria2008 (I assume) and me wanted to raise was the abuse of HDR. Each technique is like a spice, say like Tabasco. What’s that sort of cooking if one pours a heavy dose of Tabasco in each meal prepared ? Some people will say “hey, dude, are you living on the moon ?! That’s called Mexican-style cuisine...

A Post By: Andrew S. Gibson There are so many options for processing photos in Lightroom that it’s no surprise that some photographers get confused. If you’re finding it difficult to decide what to do with your images (in the post-processing sense) you’re not alone. The key is to think about what you want to achieve with your processing. That’s not always easy, but you may find it useful to start by thinking about the following aspects. Your answers will help determine the approach you take. Colour Do you want a bright, colourful image or a desaturated one? Perhaps you’d even like...

A Post By: Bryan Caporicci Digital has done wonders for our industry – it allows us to learn faster, it gives us technological opportunities that we could have only wished for in the “film†days and it has made completely new styles of photography possible. There’s no doubt that the digital shift has been a positive one. While we embrace all of this change that digital has brought and explore the new depths of technology, I think it’s important to keep one foot in the “analog†world, at least one area – the physical print. The print versus digital discussion is a very...

Unfortunate that you can’t seem to vote on the best image in each category. My choices: Natural #5, Travel #8, People #1, Americana #7, Altered #3 (with #4 virtually in a tie), Mobile #3. My favorite? People #1. But so many great images! The cameras were almost all Canon or Nikon; others might want to get in the mix next year. In Mobile, you’d think the only cameraphones available were iPhones, but their images certainly prove the old adage that the best camera is the one you have with you. Source Article from...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt By Jamie Grant Last couple of weeks have been all about nature and the outdoors. Another part of nature is the animal kingdom. So this week’s photography challenge is to get out and photograph some pets. If you don’t have any borrow your friend’s or neighbours. Photographing animals presents a unique set of challenges. You have a moving, possibly unwilling subject to deal with – as well as potentially tricky exposure to try and get detail in fur or feathers. Just the right light is essential, as is a delicate hand at working with your furry (or...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt We’ve been focused on nature and landscape for a while on dPS so it’s time to shift gears and move over to the fauna, specifically – pets. If you have any pets you no doubt have endless photos of them. I have tons of photos of my cats on my iPhone. But let’s take it up a notch and see some really outstanding pet photos and see how it’s done. I might even motivate myself to get out the “real†camera and take some photos of my girls. Stop Wasting Users’ Time By Paul Boag April 25th, 2014 Opinion Column, User Experience, User Interaction 0 Comments Our users are precious about their time and we must stop wasting it. On each project ask two questions: “Am I saving myself time at the expense of the user?†and “How can I save the user time here?†What is the single most precious commodity in Western society? Money? Status? I would argue it is time. We are protective of our time, and with good reason. There are so many demands on it. We have so much to do. So much pressure. People hate to have their time wasted,...

Rebuilding An HTML5 Game In Unity By Martin Kool April 24th, 2014 Android, Games, HTML5 10 Comments When our HTML5 game Numolition was nearly done, we decided to throw it all away and rebuild it in Unity. That turned out to be an exciting and valuable experience, and one that I thought would be worth sharing with other Web developers. Come in, the water’s warm! Last year, we released a mobile game named Quento. It was written entirely in HTML5, wrapped in our proprietary PhoneGap alternative and launched in many app stores with mild success. What strikes me, as a guy who was alive back then, is that we went to the moon in the first place. No, we didn’t have cell phones, and the only computer in school was a massive apparatus in its own room which you had to program with terse text commands. But we weren’t quite as backwards as it might appear to the current generation. Making it to the moon was a serious accomplishment. That, and the Beatles. Source Article from...

As far as I can see, they clearly mark the photographer as someone who knew both their technical and compositional basics, and was capable of taking at least decent-quality photographs. As others have mentioned, obtaining proper focus and exposure required a little more skill than it does today (not to mention that colour slide film, with its less than comfortable exposure latitude, was a novelty back then). I’m not one to judge their “artistic” merit, which would be kind of goofy anyway, because these shots were obviously never intended as art, nor are they trumpeted on...

To understand the present, you must first understand the past. Why are Japanese cameras cheaper? After the WWII, Germany was stripped of all its intellectual property, its industrial and technology patents made void. It was devastating to German companies who have totally lost momentum, and it created a huge bonanza for manufacturers elsewhere (particularly in the US and Japan). Many of (then) smaller Japanese companies had actually been repair shops before the war, and were familiar with the construction of the cameras, and most had experience fabricating hard to get parts. The economic...

However, not everybody has access to those digital platforms and with only a very small proportion of photos made into prints, the less tech-savvy or connected may be missing out. Yep, sounds like sour grapes, alright. LOL. You seem to forget that, in its time, there were plenty of other photographers who considered your beloved M6’s to be nothing but overpriced, over-romanticized, shiny, anachronistic novelties for people with more money than brains. Now, you’re exhibiting the ultimate in hypocrisy by approving of your own appreciation for your Leicas, while ridiculing any appreciation for this new Leica. If anything, your Leica M6’s (adjusted for today’s dollars, and taking into account that they were little more than glorified light-tight...

A Post By: Rowan Sims No doubt like many other photographers, so many of my images have never seen the light of day. This is mostly for good reason; they are out of focus, poorly composed, badly timed, they just don’t make the cut. Often these images may be good, just not the BEST. I have learned though, that there can be gold hiding in your archives, just waiting to be rediscovered, taken into the develop module and shared with the world. I have found that spending some time digging through old shoots can yield some very positive results. Make it part of your workflow to revisit your...

You’re not alone. The work/life balance is a delicate dance and it’s easy to get sidetracked by the endless tasks of day to day life, even when things are going well.
