Cache Invalidation Strategies With Varnish Cache By Per Buer April 23rd, 2014 Optimization, Performance, Techniques 1 Comment Phil Karlton once said, “There are only two hard things in Computer Science: cache invalidation and naming things.†This article is about the harder of these two: cache invalidation. It’s directed at readers who already work with Varnish Cache. To learn more about it, you’ll find background information in “Speed Up Your Mobile Website With Varnish.†10 microseconds (or 250 milliseconds): That’s the difference between delivering a cache hit and delivering...

Some of the most compelling (but challenging) underwater photographs are those showing marine life behavior of some type. Although creating a nice behavior image can be a difficult endeavor, there are steps an intrepid photographer can take to increase the chances of success.Â
Â
Â
Cleaning Stations
One of the most common behaviors that divers are familiar with are those involving cleaning stations. Of course, the first step in attaining an image is actually finding a cleaning station. Once such a...

A Post By: Rick Berk The Fire Wave at Valley of Fire State Park.Exposure: ISO 160, 4 minutes, at f/16. EOS 5D Mark III with EF 16-35 f/2.8L II. About a month ago, a question was posed on the DPS Facebook Page, “What is the number one obstacle to you taking better photos?†While some answered that they were unsure how to set exposure in Manual mode, and others thought their gear might be limiting them, the overwhelming number one answer was TIME. In this day and age of being always on, always connected, and always on the go, it can be difficult to find time to do photography. Like...

“While the F9R hovers at about 250m (820 ft), future tests will go much higher. Hopefully the drones will be able to keep up. “ Not likely, since some of the planned tests are exoatmospheric (out of the atmosphere – > 300,000 feet), and even the lower ones will require the rocket to climb out at hundreds of mile per hour. The Pro 1 JPGs have been way cooked at their time, that means heavy processed by in-camera algorithms. No offence, i’ve owned the Pro 1, too…and must say that the “L” Lens wasn’t so “L” really…at last not Pro Level for sure, apart from the Name.Further, the 7x Zoom Range PowerShot Pro 1 have had much more distortion, and wasn’t as good neither sharp as the Olympus C-8080z, which have had the best glas (Lens) onto a bridge camera back in 2004, 10 years ago. Apart from that, the Pro 1 suffered also from dust spots inside the lens –...

“Sony was early in the game, as well as HTC witch was a 100% pure smartphone maker, and the funiest part a Windows Mobile one, and Asus too (even if Asus is not the top), but they understand that WP is not the way to go.” Well, they all switched to Android (from Windows Mobile / Symbian) years ago. Nokia didn’t want to offer Android headsets – unlike those manufacturers. The reasons are well-known (to be the most important – practically, only – manufacturer in the WP area and not having to directly compete with low-cost Chinese manufacturers etc.) Too bad...

Rethinking Mobile Tutorials: Which Patterns Really Work? By Theresa Neil April 22nd, 2014 Design Patterns, Techniques, Tutorials 3 Comments Pattern libraries are a great source of inspiration and education for designers. But common practice doesn’t always equal best practice. In this post, we’ll look at why many common tutorial patterns are ineffective and how you can leverage game design principles to increase user engagement. After the release of the first edition of Mobile Design Pattern Gallery, Intuit asked me to speak with its mobile team. I spoke at a high level about the value of...

After Editorially: The Search For Alternative Collaborative Online Writing Tools By Paul Lloyd April 17th, 2014 Resources, Techniques, Tools 14 Comments I’m going to let you in on a little secret: the best writers, be it your favorite authors or those that write for Smashing Magazine, don’t do it alone. Often, they work with an editor (or two), who will help them coalesce their words into something more compelling or easier to understand. Having worked with several editors — and having been a technical editor myself — I’ve really come to appreciate this aspect of the writing...

A Post By: Andrew S. Gibson In my last article I gave you five reasons to use natural light for portraiture. The next step in creating the perfect portrait shoot is planning. The more details you figure out in advance, the more likely you are to come away from the shoot with some beautiful portraits to make you proud. Generating ideas The creative side of portrait photography is something that some photographers seem to find easy, and others really challenging. One approach to generating ideas is to look at the work of others and let their portraits inspire you. You’re probably familiar...

A Post By: Piper Mackay The background in your image can quickly reveal your skill level as a photographer. Learning to see past an exotic or exciting subject, to catch the details in the background, is what will distinguish you from a beginning, hobbyist photographer to an experienced professional. The background in your image immediately stands out to a trained eye. Learning just this skill can very quickly elevate and improve your photography. Most times, the difference between a snapshot and a strong, compelling image can be as simple as one small step, slightly changing your...

Before the launch of Lytro’s new Illum camera, we spoke with Lytro CEO Jason Rosenthal and Founder and Executive Chairman Ren Ng about the the new product, to find out what’s been added and improved over the original Light Field Camera.  The press materials mention that the Illum is geared toward ‘Creative Pioneers’. So who are these photographers? Rosenthal: The number of pictures that have been taken and shared online in the last three years, I believe, eclipse all photos ever taken in the previous 172 years. So if you’re a serious photographer, you’ve lost...

Lytro has unveiled the Illum light field camera, its first new hardware since the original Lytro launched more than two years ago. Like its predecessor, the Illum captures information about the angle from which light has arrived, allowing it to calculate images with different perspective and focus. Lytro calls the images ‘living pictures’, which are presented in a proprietary interactive format.  The biggest change is the use of a much larger sensor: now a 1″ type, rather than 1/3″ type usually found in smartphones. Despite this more than sevenfold increase in...

Nice, light, quite interesting DSLR. Yes, there are “more exciting” cameras. However, given a choice, I’d pick Nikon any time any day. Just think about it for a moment. In the past 2 years, Sony has started and buried a whole new line of cameras, and is now burying one of the oldest mounts. In the past 10 years Canon has started EF-S, then EF-M, and didn’t do much good with any of them. Even Samsung already introduced NX Mini in addition to barely breathing NX mount. The only two mounts with hundreds of legacy lenses are Nikon F and Pentax K. For better or for worse,...

These days, I’m really of the opinion that it’s really all about the photos you make, not about the device you use to make them. I think this camera is really about the device you use to make the photos. When I look at a photo, I really couldn’t care less about what device made the photo (whether it be a smart phone, or an m4/3 camera, or a 35mm FF camera, or a 4×5 camera). I just care if the photo is good or not. However, this camera should be fun for someone who gets a kick out of shooting with a unique device. I just don’t think a device such as a 4×5...

When you show final images, there’s that sense of anticipation, excitement and nervousness as you gauge reactions. And when you hear the words “amazing†or “I love them,†it’s truly a great feeling. So how do you get the “wow†and avoid the “just okay?†Well that’s not always easy. @lensmate. I used Sony merely as an example, I have a friend who uses the a850 so no issues with the results he gets. We both have wonderful lives btw and neither of us consider ourselves superior(?), only fellow travellers on the image making road trying to learn from each other and the great pros, past AND present. You know, McCullin, Nachtwey, Gotts, Salgado etc, those guys. I am an assistant teacher (part time) at my friend’s photo courses and we see 700-800 people a year. I encourage...

A Post By: Neil Creek Sometimes a new piece of camera equipment will let you do something better, faster, or cheaper. But sometimes it lets you do something wholly new, that nothing else can do, and it opens up a whole new world of creative opportunities. The Light Blaster is that kind of gear. By combining a flash, a lens, and one of many different slides which you can buy or provide yourself, the Light Blaster lets you project an image into your scene or onto the subject. Like any new piece of equipment there’s a bit of a learning curve, but you can create effects that add to your photo...

A Post By: John Davenport Digital cameras may be making incremental improvements with dynamic range capabilities, but are still lacking in terms of what they can capture. Bracketing multiple exposures of the same scene and merging them together with tone mapping software is one way of creating an HDR photograph allowing you to capture the full range of the scene in front of your camera. The people at Everimaging have recently upgraded their HDR tone mapping software offering to its third edition, and as a result today we’re going to talk about HDRDarkroom 3. It’s available for both Mac...

But I look at it like looking at vintage cars – old timers – I wouldn’t necessarily think, standing in front of a 1950 XK120 Jag, that it would be a car that would “work” in the 21st century. It’s pure mechanical beauty and the historic aspect aside, it has it’s drawbacks and it has its problems by todays standard.Yet I can stand in front of it and admire it for its qualities. Everything changes, and so do the standards by which we judge items, products, technics, etc… The photographs shown are...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt Earlier today I shared a collection of waterfall photographs to get your weekend going, and earlier this week we launched our latest dPS eBook  - Loving Landscapes A guide to landscape photography workflow and post-production. So in keep with the theme of landscape and nature photography the weekly photography challenge will be waterfalls. By paul bica Even if you live in the city you can probably find some manmade waterfalls or fountains nearby. Think outside the box. Is there a park with a stream? Perhaps a babbling brook? Do some digging and find some...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt A couple weeks ago I shared some stunning landscape photos and you had a weekly challenge of the same theme. Today I’m going to get more specific and focus in on one element of nature that’s super popular with landscape photographers. Waterfalls! I think this is one of those things that when you can master taking photos of a waterfall, ones that make you and your friends go “oh wow†then your photography has stepped up a notch to the next level. Come with me on this journey, and if you’re not there yet I’ll leave you with a few articles on...

If you show off some great shots, amateurs will be impressed and shell out money to basically imitate, not learn, from the pros. In my opinion, creativity can’t be learnt. A Post By: John Barbiaux 16mm lens, ISO 100, f/13, 2 second exposure Perhaps one of the most overlooked and undervalued tools you can own as a photographer is a Neutral Density filter (ND Filter) or Graduated ND Filter. In fact, if photography is considered painting with light then a ND filter would be considered the brush tip. You see, different paint brush tips can be used to regulate, if you will, the amount of paint you apply with each stroke – just like different Neutral Density or Graduated ND filters can be used to regulate the amount of light you allow to enter your camera. What is...

A Post By: Jimmy McIntyre There will be a time when the wizards behind your camera technology conjure up a sensor so powerful they will swallow up any scene and spit it out just as it was – no over, or underexposed areas. Until then, in order to produce an image with a high dynamic range of light, you have to work with the sensors available to you and create your own post-processing magic. Image created by blending two exposure with luminosity masks, one for the sky and one for the foreground. While you, and many photographers, may have relied heavily on HDR programs in your exposure...

I’d say they didn’t utilize watercoloring noise reduction (Fuji style) but rather their NR involves (besides other things) significant reduction of local contrast. The result exhibits haze (in the luma channel) and bleeding (in the chroma channel) in quite significant amounts. Overall – the camera offers the usual small sensor output, rather slow lens (also usual in the dying market segment of small sensor travelzooms). Nothing ground-breakiung, besides the advanced 5-axis IS. However, efficiency of the stabilization can be hardly judged from the sample images. Source...

Charities raise their credibility by publishing their financial statements and reviews by such organizations as Give Well or BBB. The share of contributions applied to fundraising or administrative expenses is not the full story, either, unless one also knows the portion of “help” that gets spent on subcontractors, or whether any aid-in-kind is priced at market or obtained with subsidy and marked up. NG might consider improving its site with information about its directors, oversight, and financial disclosures. Source Article from...

I’ve been selling prints on FineArtAmerica for a few years as well as original paintings from people finding them on the site, and I think their way of doing it is very good. I’ve very thoroughly tested it on my (factory; no rooting) Nexus 7 2013 and found out the following: – the new panorama support is GREAT, particularly if you enable maximum resolution (the default is high-res). Up until now, Google’s implementation was a joke – far-far inferior to either Apple’s one on the iPhone 4S+ or Samsung’s implementation in their Android handsets. Even Nokia’s WP (but not Symbian) implementation has been significantly better. – blurring worked just GREAT in my tests. While some people did complain about it being...

Manuel’s Question: I read Scott Hargis’s Lighting Interiors book and it’s awesome, but I have one concern. Why does he never mention white balance? Answer: Shoot in RAW, set your WB on auto and then touch it up as needed in Lightroom or Photoshop. Also, you’ll find that when using flash, the flash will tend to dominate the WB. I shoot with WB on Auto and very rarely have to change the WB in Lightroom. Greg’s Question: I’m really confused on how this whole Virtual Tour thing works from the Realtor’s perspective. I understand how to make a basic slideshow in Lightroom, but...

A Post By: Michael Walker-Toye I don’t use a flash for my photography, it’s a personal preference. Available light, in its many forms, is both challenging and rewarding so I rarely find a need to turn to creative lighting. Natural light, golden hour What is ‘available light’? Let’s be clear on definitions first. As a street photographer my preferred source of light is sunlight, more specifically, natural light. Available and ambient light refer to any and all light sources the photographer did not introduce for their photograph; light bulbs, candles, fire, neon, to name a few. The...

It is about intent, not size. Either/or.I can put a little S70 Canon in my pocket. I cannot do that with any of these three. I can put much more easily, a tiny Exilim or iPhone, or Ixus in my pocket, but I’m only going to do that if I dont CARE about results. The Canon is way too big, as is the RX10, to go in anyone’s pocket. It needs a bag, or to be on a strap round your neck. So you might as well have a DSLR. Really. Even an a6000 or Fuji Xpro style APS-C is as big as a DSLR, and there are a lot smaller ones than a D7100 with a 24MP sensor. The question is “Do you want to...

A Post By: Andrew S. Gibson With all the attention given to the art and craft of shooting portraits using flash, you could be forgiven for thinking that this is the only way to take a portrait. The truth is that while fashionable Speedlites get all the attention, there are photographers working almost entirely in natural light and creating beautiful portraits without a softbox or light stand in sight. One of the most prolific is Eduardo Izq, a photographer based in the United States who has built an impressive portfolio of natural light portraits taken using local models and dancers. Eduardo...

Everyone, even those really interested in cameras, cannot be expected to remember the specs of every camera. I try, and still I sometimes wonder things like “hmmh, I remember the X100 was a bit special, but what was it now?” On another note, I would have very much liked if they told in this article what the effect this extra lens has on maximum aperture / t-stop. With between-lens-and-body adapters this is pretty much a known (because such a tele extender just spreads the light (already collected by the lens) to a larger area), but the same simple formulas don’t apply for...

First up are a pair of grips for the X-T1: the MHG-XT Small and Large. The former is more like an adapter than anything else, as all of the other compatible grips can be attached to it (including the battery grip). The MHG-XT Large is just what it sounds like: an even larger grip than the currently available MHG-XT. Both grips have enough spacing to allow for use of larger lenses and allow easy access to the battery/memory card compartment. They also have flanges for Arca-Swiss adapters built right in. For those who want a more substantial eye-cup, Fuji now offers the EC-XT extended...

The modules can now establish a NFC connection to your smartphone quicker, just make sure you’ve got the latest version of Sony’s PlayMemories Mobile app (v4.2 or newer) installed. Yoshihisa Maitani once was asked what his ideal camera would be. His reply was along the lines of “simple: you simply look at something, and the picture is captured”. If it were to be limited to that function, this invention would be marvellous, but the nasty information-hungry goblins infesting the Internet have made every such new development seem more of a curse. It’s time that stringent electronic privacy laws were enacted, and enforced with a very big stick. …Always supposing, of course, that they don’t interfere with street photography. Never. I had my bank cards near working MRI machine, nothing happened to anything. Mythbusters did an experiment about cards and magnets, and that was busted: you have to have VERY strong magnet to ruin modern cash cards. I tried that myself with 30’000 Gauss lab magnet (which is enough to stop your anti-magnetic Swiss or Japanese watch and drive nuts many other things, although it’s nearly not the strongest magnet I messed with) and own active card. Nothing happened to both, magnet survived, card survived. Anyway, if you ruin your card, you just call hotline, claim it lost and...

A Post By: Darren Rowse Today is an exciting day at dPS HQ because we’re releasing an eBook that has been asked for many times by readers – LOVING Landscapes, a Guide to Landscape Photography Workflow and Post-Processing by Todd and Sarah Sisson. Early in 2013 we looked at our growing library of photography eBooks and realised that we had a big hole to fill – we were yet to publish a Landscape Photography eBook. We began the hunt for a photographer to create a guide. After much searching we came across the photography of husband and wife team Todd and Sarah Sisson and fell in love with...

A Post By: Gavin Hardcastle The most common question I get asked by my workshop students is ‘how do you get such sharp images?’. It’s actually really simple. Basically, avoid movement of any kind while the shutter is open, focus well and choose the right aperture for your creative vision. Mostly it’s just plain old common sense with a couple of technical elements thrown in, so if you want to learn how to get super sharp landscape photography images, here’s my list of top tips. Top tips for sharper landscape photography 1 – Use a good tripod with a sturdy ball head and make sure...

A Post By: James Maher Recently I wrote a New Photographer’s Guide to Camera Settings. Once you become comfortable with your camera settings, the next step is to learn the rules of good composition and design for your photography. So here are the 10 most important tips to take into account when framing your scene. Your guide to composition. Grand Central Terminal and Chrysler Building, NYC #1 How will the viewer’s eyes flow through the scene? I prefer to think about composition as if it is a game to please the eyes, and if you want to please the eyes, they need something to do and...

The Lacy Atkins site, if one can excuse the “selfie” on the main page, includes various interesting photo series, including the one about the Oakland charter school. It features some motivated, engaged people. Unfortunately, most of the pictures portray very reluctant or bewildered young men. One appears to give up entirely. The learning experience seems reduced to passing unappetizing multiple choice proficiency exams. The school could probably use a music and choir director prior to a math drill sergeant. The enrollment selection process and voluntary nature may assure some...

The old 645D is no slouch either, and comparing it to 35mm full-frame DSLRs, it still holds its own rather well. It will be nice to see what kind of image improvements are under the hood of this one. By the way, with that kind of price for what is a camera with a sensor basically half as big as the 645 format, wouldn’t it be possible to get one that actually was full-frame similarly priced to the Hasselblad? now, that would be game-changing! Anyway, I really like the Pentax cameras. I was seriously considering splurging out on a 645D a while back, but I’m still waiting for that...

Ricoh has launched the Pentax 645Z, a medium-format camera with a 51.4 megapixel CMOS sensor. Boasting an articulated 3.2-inch LCD, top ISO of 204,800, 3 fps continuous shooting, and 1080/60i video, the 645Z is cold-resistant, dustproof and weather-resistant with 76 weather-seals. It’s also compatible with the Pentax FluCard, offering wireless remote control and image sharing from the camera to a smartphone, tablet or computer. The Pentax 645Z will be available in June for $8499/£6799 body only. Ricoh Imaging Americas also announced the availability of thirteen additional 645...

Still use WinXP on my Thinkpad R52 (Pentium m 1.8Ghz + 2GB DDR2), mainly because I can’t get proper drivers for its display adapter in Win7. And then some, I use WinXP SP3 32bit for my desktop PC (AMD X2 3Ghz w/ 4GB of RAM) too.Indeed I lost about half gigabyte of RAM. Why is that? Well, I do love simple UI and it simply works for me, to make or change file association, file search features, drivers, etc.Currently most of the time the machine would run Photoshop CS6 with latest compatible ACR & DNG converter. I have no problem (yet) with latest DSLR Raw files. Then some office...

Great review, really enjoyed that, thanks! However I am struggling to understand how, in The Final Word, the Fuji is compared with 5 cameras, yet four out of five or 80% of these are not even in the same category, according to the Compare mode tool. As the line between camera classes/categories become increasingly blurred, is this evidence that the Compare mode tool and it’s categories are becoming redundant? In this instance comparing to the demonstrably out-of-date 7D and E30 is just silly. The Editor’s own differing choice of cameras in the article summary just reinforces...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt Bambi Cantrell may not be a name you recognize unless you are a wedding photographer. She’s been doing photography since about 1982 and was someone who I followed early on in my career in photography. She’s a frequent speaker at the popular WPPI conference every year and was a recent teacher on Creative Live. These videos are segments of that talk that discuss that area of value of yourself as a photographer and pricing so make a profit and a good living. In this video below Bambi talks about many extremely important aspects to being a photographer...

A Post By: Nikole Bordato Ahhh spring. A great time to bust out your lens pens and lens cloths and dust off your photography equipment. But don’t forget to spruce up your memory cards before heading into the summer season. Start With a Memory Card Inventory Take the time to survey how many cards you have and what state they are in. This is especially important if you have multiple types of cards floating around. Ensure that there are no stragglers hiding in a camera bag pocket or at the bottom of a lens case. My tip: I write numbers on my memory cards so I can double check I have all my...

A Post By: Patrick Nugent Often times shooting special events is not the most glamorous gig in photography, but when a client calls you up looking for a photographer to shoot an event, you take the job. Sometime’s you end up somewhere great like the trading floor of the New York Stock Exchange, other times you’re in a small, dark, dull event space with only 20 people making the best of the situation. Regardless of the size or location of the event, you’re job is to make some great images. There are a lot of little things that can make diving into special event photography much...

A Post By: Helen Bradley If you have Lightroom you might assume that you have all you need for managing your images. That may not be the case and many professional and keen amateur photographers benefit from combining Lightroom with the image management software Daminion. Daminion is an image management solution which helps you do large library management with Lightroom. You can think of it as being the rough equivalent of the Lightroom Library module operating on steroids. Daminion’s biggest advantage is that it is true multiuser software so, with Daminion server installed, multiple users...

No one can teach what he didn’t learn and no one can share what he doesn’t have. One of those things is LANGUAGE. Writing is an art, and it has to be enriched with proper vocabulary, figure of style and personality, not with redundancy and poor use of the language, as is the common case with these editorials (?) If they have an editor’s reading before posting, he must just look for four letters words and incendiary purposes, then he or she gives the OK. Please don’t go to You-tube to see the evaluations. They make me cry.A camera can be advanced, corrected, practical,...

The NX20 body is selling about $729. (link in second paragraph for NX20) This NX30 as an update could be about the same, I imagine, once available. Would make it a possible good alternative over buying a EM5 or Panasonic G for those that want larger APSC sensor at 20MP. Plus Samsung has a few lenses to use, which is also in the link at bottom of that page.Like the rotating screen, and titling EVF, APSC sensor, grip. Never really liked the small NEX bodies of Sony, as perhaps too small in proportion once lenses are attached. Perhaps only my opinion, but Sony may have been better off using...
