Why You Should Get Excited About Emotional Branding
By Rick Sloboda
April 11th, 2014

Globalization, low-cost technologies and saturated markets are making products and services interchangeable and barely distinguishable. As a result, today’s brands must go beyond face value and tap into consumers’ deepest subconscious emotions to win the marketplace. The Role Of Brands Is Changing In recent decades, the economic base has shifted from production to consumption, from needs to wants, from objective to subjective....

First of all, this is just and idea at this point. It’s not yet as real as the Gofor website and video make it sound. The concept is basically a smartphone App that would allow you to schedule a RCMA video or still shot. However, if state and federal laws permitted it I could see this being a high demand service! A real estate photographer could request  a front shot(s) to augment the work they were doing on the ground without even needing to own the RCMA equipment. Very compelling concept, particularly if a lengthy or involved certification and testing process is introduced by future FAA...

A Post By: Navan Viswa In digital photography, just like exposure, colors too have a triangle of their own. Color adjustment triangle The triangle of color adjustments in Lightroom. The three attributes that form the triangle are shown above, now let’s see how they affect the colors of an image. Exposure This attribute controls the brightness level of all the pixels that constitute an image. Whenever the brightness level of the pixel is altered, the color value too gets changed. You can easily identify this effect in a photograph of a landscape. Apply a Graduated Filter on the sky area...

A Post By: Peter West Carey Sometimes the lessons are so basic, they are overlooked. This is one I feel needs to be repeated for new photographers as well as a gentle reminder for those of us with decades of shooting experience. Photography is the process of recording light. It is the same with your eyes, every waking moment of every day you use them. You see subjects around you and mentally are so busy classifying and figuring them out (“What a beautiful red Ferrari! Is it slowing down for a right hand turn?â€) that when it comes time to lift a camera to your eye, you forget to stop and...

While smartphone processing power, screen resolutions and camera performance have all improved significantly over the last few years, one area of development is seemingly standing still. Under heavy use most smartphone batteries still won’t make it through the day, and once plugged in, devices take a long time to charge. This might change though. At the Microsoft Think Next Conference in Tel Aviv, Storedot, a start-up from Israel, has shown a prototype battery that charges in under 30 seconds. The bio-organic battery uses nano-crystal technology that originates from research...

Olympus issued false prospectus’s and annual reports upon which investing and lending was done. They falsified information and when caught, Olympus share price and bonds fell, both of which were collateral for money lent. This was likely a breach of the investment contacts between Olympus and the banks and now the banks seek to recoup their losses suffered by their shareholders at the expense of Olympus shareholders (and, likely, customers). Right now Olympus has a very, very poor credit profile. Source Article from...

I value these reviews not for a final score (I’ve had the K-3 since November and already know its worth), but for actual analysis like this: “On testing, we found the K-3’s ISO to be within 1/6th EV of the expected result, which is the tolerance level allowed in the ISO standard. In which case, the K-3’s ISO ratings should be considered accurate.” . . . and for more detailed information than found in the camera manual, like this information on the actual degrees of change applied by the various ISO options: “The K-3 has one of the best Auto ISO...

A Post By: Omar Zenhom You have ideas. Things that cross your mind that you should do as you build your career as a photographer. They all seem like good ideas but how do you actually know for sure? You’ll need to make decisions on these ideas as you grow as a professional. This can be how you set your prices, your packages or even the look and feel of your website. The problem is most of us try to validate these ideas in our own head. By ed ouimette Your audience and potential customers are real people, not imaginary. So it doesn’t make much sense to be validating ideas in your head?...

It can record video at 1080/60p as well as 720/120p for some high speed action. As with most cameras these days, you’ll find a Wi-Fi feature on the J4. That means that one particular device truly has great image quality! And if i’m not mistaken, dpreview and dxomark are actually partners.. Am I right? No, they are not biased and calling them rubbish is just downright preposterous. It is you who just don’t understand their measurements in assessing image quality, in case you don’t know their industry standard test consists of taking...

DXO is even more powerful in some respects than LR; and lags behind in other fileds, i.e. image organizer; but hey, what does an image organizer cost? Some of the best are freeware or shareware…). It enables us both to include “gems†(i.e. packaged code) that we can reuse in our own applications and to package our own code as...

A Post By: Katie McEnaney Many photographers love to travel. They love the thrill of being in a new place, of capturing new scenes and experiences, and of coming home with quality images. But landscape and travel  photography do not need to be confined to weeks-long trips to far-flung locations. This article will explore how to get the most out of a weekend (or even weekday) local photography outing (all photographs in this article were taken within a few miles of where I live). Before: Planning and Packing Making a plan or having a bucket list of photography wants is a great place to...

Touted as ‘the world’s smallest broadcast camera with the world’s largest viewfinder’, Blackmagic Design has announced its new Studio Camera. The Studio Camera employs a 12.48mm x 7.02mm sensor and a Micro Four Thirds lens mount. It also has a 10-inch viewfinder and a four-hour built-in battery. The Studio Camera is strong on remote management features and includes ports for use with aviation headsets, as well as a built-in fiber-optic connection. As the camera is intended to be used in a live-switching scenario, it does not have any local writing capacity –...

LOL!)…etc…etc…blah…blah..hoo…haa….yaddy yadah… I CANNOT BELIEVE what Paul went thru: time, energy and expense-wise to get that photo….. and I have not even discussed him risking his life…After...

Consumer electronics maker JVC Kenwood has joined the Micro Four Thirds standard and said it will develop products for the system. The company is showing two prototype 4K-capable cameras, including a compact, handheld model at NAB in Las Vegas. We stopped by the JVC Kenwood booth and got a first glimpse of the cameras on display. Interestingly, the company says both cameras will have Super 35 sensors (around 21 x 12mm), which is wider than the original Four Thirds sensor format which the standard was designed around. The Micro Four Thirds system, originally developed by Olympus and...

AJA has announced the Cion – a production camera featuring a 4K APS-C sized sensor – at NAB in Las Vegas, Nevada. This is AJA Video System’s first camera, the company being known primarily as a manufacturer of video interface and conversion products. The camera accepts lenses with a PL mount and records to a single proprietary SSD drive (‘Pak’ storage modules come in either a 256GB or 512GB configurations). The camera is constructed out of magnesium and with its integrated suede shoulder pad, it’s intended for flexible use in the field. Â The sensor can...

I like Jeff’s samples too, because 1) there’s a point to them (purple fringing tunnel, detail in ChinaTown, etc.), and 2) they’re (mostly) shot on sunny days, which is what I (and I suspect most of us) do too. These samples look good. I don’t see a lot of D.R. advantage to the larger sensor, to be honest. Areas that I would expect to be blown out on a smaller sensor camera are blown out on this camera. The ISO 3200 portrait is a nice result. C.A. is corrected in all images, but you can see a few halos here and there, no biggie. Also, the corners are slightly degraded...

Involving Clients In Your Mobile Workflow

A lot of mobile-minded talented folks across the globe produce great work, but yet sometimes you still hear many of them complain about their relationships with their clients. They often mention feeling isolated and not truly understanding what the client really needed. This lack of personal interaction often leads to misunderstanding, as well as less awareness of and appreciation for all your hard work. While involving clients in your...

A Post By: Jeff Guyer The MagMod speedlight modifier solves several problems and challenges posed by other systems. Until now, most speedlight modifiers on the market have been pretty inconvenient to use. I’m not talking about the quality of their output– just the lengths we’ve had to go in order to attach them to our flashes, and– perhaps more importantly– get them to stay on our speedlights over the course of a photo shoot. If your flash has a permanently attached strip of Velcro, or you have a collection of assorted straps, bands, tapes, attachment accessories, and other DIY...

A Post By: Kav Dadfar After a recent assignment to Central Turkey I uploaded some images to my website and Facebook page. Since then I have had several people asking me how I managed to capture some of my shots. This particular photo of the inside of a hot air balloon had the most questions. Sometimes opportunities for great shots easily present themselves but most photographers will tell you that hard work, preparation and research help you to get the image you envision. This was no exception. Research the area ahead of time As soon as I had details of the assignment I began to research the...

@ Stu 5 – I agree with the comparison with the 1Dc to a certain extent, except for a couple of things. Some may value financial savings over physical size. The 1DC is about $9000, whereas the A7S is likely $4000 including Atomos Shogun. Secondly, the 1DC’s 4K codec produces very bloated files at 8bit 4:2:2, whereas the Shogun will allow 8bit output to 10bit ProRes file. The initial demo videos show that the 4k output of the A7S is extremely good, at least as good as the 1DC, perhaps even better. The 1DC is also apparently as kludgy to operate for video as the 5D Mark II. No...

Sony has announced the Alpha 7S, a 12MP full-frame mirrorless camera designed for both stills and video. The camera can read out its entire sensor fast enough to output 8-bit 4:2:2 4k video over HDMI at up to 30p, without the need for line skipping or pixel binning. This also promises higher quality for the 1080p video (at up to 60p) it can record internally. Unlike the a7 and a7R, the latest model is not constrained by the AVCHD standard, also offering the XAVC S system, with bitrates of up to 50Mbps. The camera records at up to 1080/60p internally with 4:2:0 chroma sub-sampling. The higher...

It is important that you put this “creative eye†to use on a regular basis, not only to maintain it, but also to improve it. Taking pictures isn’t the only time you have to use your creative eye. You can use it by looking at other people’s pictures to see what you could have done...

If you missed it, you can see the collection and my question here. Beautiful pictures of amazing creatures … … but on a point of order re. the biology, “Since the jellyfish in the lake have no natural predators, they have lost their sting” is misleading and wrong. Jellyfish don’t have “sting” to ward of predators – they still get eaten freely by turtles, whales and others. They “sting” in order to paralyse THEIR prey, generally small fish. And without SOME kind of sting, they would simply starve and die. Even if that string cannot penetrate human skin. Brian Source Article from...

I think it was when I got #8 or #9 that my wife asked me how many would be enough. I made the egregious mistake of replying with something along the lines of, “I don’t know. How many pairs of shoes will be enough?†Thankfully, I have quick reflexes and was able to dodge the flying stiletto and we’ve never spoken of our addictions again. Seriously, though. Lens was zoomed all the way out to 6.1mm (28mm equivalent on a full-frame camera) When starting out in photography, it’s easy to focus (pardon the pun) on the gear and learning about proper exposure, that you can overlook one of the easiest ways to improve your images, whether you use a DSLR, a point and shoot camera, or even just your cell phone’s camera. It’s amazing how a simple change of your point of view can make a bland image, into something much more exciting. After arrival in Bangkok, i had a Taxi to a 4 star hotel near Siam Square. I paid and tipped the driver and moved my trolley to reception. While talking to reception, i saw the driver entering the impressive hotel lobby. What does he want here, i asked myself. The driver walked towards me; i wondered if any trouble lay ahead; the receptionists also looked askance at this simple local man who seemed not to be comfortable with the surroundings. The driver stepped up to me, nodded formally and dropped into my hand – my Ixus compact camera. I had forgotten it on his taxi’s back seat. The...

Lensbaby is well known among DSLR photographers for its array of special-effect lenses. Now the Portland, Oregon-based company wants to expand into mobile photography and has launched a Kickstarter project to fund the final development stage of its Lensbaby Sweet Spot lens. The Sweet Spot lens attaches magnetically to the camera of your iPhone 4s, 5, 5s or 5c and provides the effect of the original Lensbaby. It allows you to put the focus on one point of the image which is then surrounded by blur that becomes gradually stronger towards the edges of the frame. You can see the effect in...

Nokia has launched a new high-end smartphone. The Lumia 930 is the international version of the Lumia Icon that was launched a few weeks ago as an exclusive model for U.S. carrier Verizon. The Nokia Lumia 930 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 and 2GB of RAM. It comes with 32GB of onboard storage but does not offer a microSD slot. You can compose and view images on a 5-inch ClearBlack AMOLED display with 1080p full-HD resolution. Here are 10 photography tips I learned after lots of frustration, discouragement, money lost, and forever lost opportunities. Let’s get to it shall we? 10 Photography Tips 1 – Always have a camera in your pocket. Always. Or else. A Post By: Dan Waters We all know most people aren’t comfortable being photographed. What’s less well documented is many photographers actually feel nervous about photographing people. It’s understandable when you think about it. Since we know that the people we’re photographing don’t want to be photographed, we feel we’re invading their space. We also feel just as ‘on show’ as the subject. We have to perform, be charming, build rapport, make people smile, effortlessly change the settings on our camera and ultimately show them how great they look in the photo. It’s a lot of...

There is a large number of third party lens attachments for smartphones available. You can choose from fisheye, wide-angle, macro or tele lenses, or even attach an entire camera module. The Micro Phone Lens Kickstarter project is different though. It’s a minuscule lens attachment made from a scratch-proof polymer that turns your smartphone or tablet into a microscope with a 150x magnification factor. The lens is adhesive, you simply stick it on and pull it off after use. The system works best when using a microscope slide. You focus by gently pressing on the slide until the...

The Inon “Bugeye†lens, officially called the Inon Underwater Micro Semi-Fisheye Relay Lens UFL-MR130 EFS60, is one of the most unique lenses out there—giving neither a normal wide-angle or a purely macro perspective. Instead, it’s a hybrid: a dedicated “fisheye macro lens.â€
This is the first lens of its kind with the optics specifically designed only for underwater photography. However, as a first-generation lens, there is still much that can be improved in terms of lens quality in the future: The lens is sharp only in the center...

A Post By: Helen Bradley I usually write about tips for Photoshop and Lightroom, but today I’m going to cover more of a workflow solution, solving the problem of duplicate photos on your computer or hard drives. If you’re like me, from time to time you’ve encountered the problem of duplicate photos. You might have imported a set of photos twice, accidentally duplicated a folder of photos, or you might have totally lost control of your photo collection to the extent that you now have multiple copies of your images and you don’t know where to begin finding, and cleaning them up. A Post By: Beryl Young When I began my journey down the wonderful path of becoming a photographer, I never realized how this camera of mine would totally transform my world. I picked up a camera before becoming a mom, not because of burning passion, but because I knew how important it was to document our life. I felt like taking pictures was an essential part of remembering all of the details of growing our family. What I’ve realized over the years though, is that photography isn’t simply about the technical details of achieving the perfect white balance, using the best gear and...

The guys at Apple Insider have spotted another camera-related Apple patent at the US Patent Office. A few months ago Apple patented a magnetic lens mount. This time the iPhone maker from Cupertino is looking at interchangeable lenses for mobile devices that will attach via a bayonet mount, just like on a DSLR or mirrorless system camera. Most patents never turn into a product but if Apple decides to bring the bayonet mount to market you might be able to attach fish-eye, wide-angle, macro or tele lenses to future generation of iPhones, iPads and iPods, without the help of additional...

To help lazy readers: By R Butler:The GR, X100S, Coolpix A, Sigma DPMs and possibly the Canon G1X would fall into a more specialist class, but we’re probably not going to have a chance to cover those, this time ’round. By Andy Westlake:We’ve reviewed most of those cameras in detail. The only ones missing are the Sigma DP Merrills (which we struggle to recommend for most users, as they’re highly reliant on Sigma Photo Pro for Raw conversion, which can produce great output but is painfully slow and clunky), and the Leica X2, which is pretty much eclipsed by the X100S....

While this is published April 1st and obviously an April joke I think it has some interesting ideas. 6-axis IBIS with the sensor moving back and forth? Remember the Contax AX: it had a movable film plane to get AF, and it worked quite well. In theory at least it would be possible to get AF a similar way with a moving sensor. Imagine AF with all those legacy lenses of OM, FD and other mounts existing out there. Anyway, I actually own an OM-G, bought in the US 30 years ago, hiding in a cupboard. It exists. It’s a very basic entry level slr though. Source Article from...

A Post By: John Corcoran How to Build Relationships to Get More Photography Clients So you’re trying to make a go of it as a freelance photographer. Maybe you are just looking for a few paid gigs on the side, or perhaps you really want to go pro. But the problem is actual paying gigs are still few and far between, even though you’ve tried everything. Shooting every day. Doing free portrait sessions for family or friends. Spent hours and hours editing photos in Photoshop or organizing images in Lightroom. So what should you do? Well, I have some good news – it may not be your...

A Post By: Etienne Bossot As a travel photographer and photography teacher, I meet a lot of photographers on a daily basis. Whether they’re amateur or pro, newbie or experienced, first-timers or old-timers, they often have one thing in common: too much gear. The pro shooters who join me on my photography tours in Southeast Asia tend to look more like pack mules than people: they’re loaded with lenses, lights, filters, and a veritable menagerie of photographic accoutrement – you know, the kind of gear that makes you look like you know what you’re doing. Being comfortable with your...

“It carries a guide number of 48, which means it can cast usable light from a maximum of 48 meters” That’s a bit of an oversimplification, don’t you think? The correct definition would be something like this. “At full power, it can provide proper illumination from a distance of 48 metres when using an f/1 lens and a sensitivity setting of ISO 100/21°, as long as you shoot without a light modifier.” Otherwise a fine review (though I do believe Biowizard has it right and you ought to substitute Watt seconds for Watts). What I do miss are the t0.1 and t0.5...

Capturing 3D models is one of the latest technology trends. The recent announcement of Google’s Project Tango smartphone got tech heads excited and at the same time horrified users with concerns about privacy. Matterport is a startup that cooperated with Google in Project Tango and built its own 3D camera. The $4,500 device is linked with an iPad running the Matterport app and captures the interior of a room or any other scene. Matterport does not reveal much information about the camera’s specification but on the company website the system is described as follows: The...

As one who had a big problem with shutter shock on my first EM1 body (quickly exchanged, thanks to understanding people in the shop) and slight issues in my current body, this is good news. BUUUUUTTTTT …. I thought the camera already had this feature? What is the option in Menu C, at the bottom, for “release lag time: short”? I found it made a significant difference to the occurrence of shutter-shock but destroyed battery life. It also makes a difference to the shutter sound. In the absence of real knowledge of what is going on, I tend to think this new option is actually...
