We’ve all been there, haven’t we? You find yourself in a coffee shop abroad, sipping cappuccino and chomping a muffin as you realize that your laptop’s battery charge is just about to crush your creative session to dust. Well, perhaps you’ve got your power adapter with you but, of course, it isn’t the right one for foreign power sockets. So you end up looking around and chatting up with...

The YN-560-III is a great all around manually triggered flash that you can use to get started or if you are using Scott Hargis’s Lighting Interiors manual flash technique. For details see Lighting Interiors e-book or Scott’s Lighting Video series. The YN-560-III that was introduced in January of 2013 is a slight refinement of the YN-560-II that has a built-in 2.4Ghz trigger compatible with the RF602/603 triggers. That is, when you are using Scott’s manual flash system you need to trigger at least one flash wirelessly if you are going to get the flash off your camera and have one...

A Post By: Jim Wise “Racing is life. Anything that happens before or after is just waiting.†– to quote Michael Delaney (played by Steve McQueen) in the movie ‘LeMans’. You don’t have to be a race car driver to feel the adrenaline rush that is auto racing. Being a photographer, and being part of the action can also be very exciting and a lot of fun. There are a number of different types of racing such as sports cars, stock cars, rally cars, open wheel cars and even your local short track cars that might race on dirt or asphalt. Each type will have different tracks with their own...

A Post By: Rick Berk EOS-1D X with EF 200-400 f/4L IS USM +1.4x Extender. 1/1000, f/5.6, ISO 800. Recently, I’ve noticed some comments from readers who seem to feel that the gear I use for my shots is the reason I get the images I do. They seem to feel that similar results cannot be achieved using consumer level gear. True, I use some top-of-the-line gear, and there are many reasons for that. But rare is the shot that I was able to get with an EOS-1D X or 5D Mark III that I could not also get with a Rebel T5i. So that begs the question: why do pros spend so much money on top-of-the-line...

The Olympus Stylus SH-1 may look like a PEN mirrorless camera, but it’s actually a compact travel zoom. But it has inherited a pretty big feature from the PEN: 5-axis image stabilization. Other features of note include a 16MP BSI-CMOS sensor, 25-600mm equiv. F3.0-6.9 lens, touchscreen 3″ LCD, limited manual control, 1080/60p video, and built-in Wi-Fi. It will be available in May in black, white, and silver for under $400. So, Olympus, this is admission that there is a shutter shock problem with the E-M1? Good to know that there is a solution for the E-M1. Could it not be used to fix the E-P5, which is by all account ruined by a more severe shutter shock problem. And, shouldn’t it be used for the E-M5 and also all future OM-D cameras, if not all Olympus cameras? Let us have the firmware updates for the other cameras, Olympus. I think Olympus is changing. Lens hoods for the 12-40mm and then the 25mm f/1.8 lenses. Firmware updates that actually provide additional features in the E-M5 and E-M1. Bravo,...

Olympus has announced the Tough TG-3, which takes its place as the flagship in the company’s rugged camera lineup. The TG-3 features a 16MP BSI-CMOS sensor and 25-100mm equiv. F2.0-4.9 zoom lens with IS, plus a 3-inch LCD (which should hopefully perform better than the OLED display on its predecessor), limited manual controls, GPS (with landmarks and e-compass), and Wi-Fi. An interesting new feature is focus stacking, which takes a series of photos to simulate greater depth-of-field. The Tough TG-3 is waterproof to 15m/50ft, shockproof to 2.1m/7ft, crushproof to 100kgf/220lbf, and...

A Post By: Andrew S. Gibson In previous articles you learned: how to create a photo website using the Koken plug-in for Lightroom, how to use The Fader plug-in to add an opacity slider to Develop Presets, and how to upload photos to 500px using their own plug-in (scroll down to read that section). Today I’d like to look at some other Lightroom plug-ins you may find useful. To clarify, I’m referring to plug-ins that add extra functionality to Lightroom by enabling you to do things with finished photos. Not programs such as those made by Nik or OnOne Software that are also plug-ins, but...

Hopefully the content covered here isn’t too obvious and self-explanatory, and it’s always great to have a nice quick refresher every now and again, isn’t it? — Ed. This entire debacle is a big missed opportunity for Nikon. In the end, they’re having to do what should have been done in the first place anyway, but now it’s perceived as a negative, with them grudgingly providing customer support because they’ve been forced into it, and every time someone reads a story about it, it reminds them of the negativity. Had they been proactive, and as soon as the issue was discovered, offered free maintenance/replacement/upgrading to all D600 owners, it would have been less costly for them, and great for their PR image. A Post By: Michael Walker-Toye The noble pursuit of street photography requires a good measure of cunning and bravado. Of course, there is the ever present hurdle of luck and opportunity. Beyond knowing your streets, their patterns and ad hoc events, getting that wonderful shot is a guessing game. When you are in the right place and you see the converging paths that will result in a great decisive moment, you need to be able to capture the scene. This can be learned and practised. Here are some practical tips to help you build your street photography confidence. I feel like I’m wearing a...

Luckily, you only have to learn the major functions at first to significantly improve your photography. It might take a few reads through the content below, but it does not take long to learn the most important abilities of your camera to significantly improve your photography. Depth of Field...

I always liked both since the first digital camera I used could do video, back then it was 320×240 MJPEG without sound but I still took couple clips. It’s nice that you share your opinion there but it works only for you and doesn’t represent other people. In fact I picked and bought my DSLR because it can do nice video too, with Magic Lantern I can even use it for RAW capture, similarly to photos. Did you know that you don’t have to read articles and post comments under them if they don’t interest you? Let everyone enjoy what they are into 🙂 Source Article from...

A Post By: Daniela Beddall What‘s all this talk about light? When I started my photography journey I remember every article (or so it felt like), blog or book I read talking about light. “Find the light!â€, “SEE the light!â€, “It’s all about the LIGHT!â€, “Follow THE LIGHT!â€â€¦ AHHHH WHAT’S ALL THIS TALK ABOUT LIGHT!!! Sound familiar? I soon became obsessed about light. I would stare at people as they were talking to me; daydreaming, watching how the light was falling on their faces. When I was out walking I would always be looking at the direction of light and the way it...

The review is below, but when I looked at the details on their website it occurred to me that there are other questions to answer: Are Lightroom Develop Presets (the sort you buy from someone) worth the money? And if they are, how do you know which ones to buy given that most websites won’t refund your money if you are unhappy with the product? Let’s start with Delicious Presets, then dig into those later. The promise on the website is that their presets will increase...

Having two distinct sensors in one camera appears to be the flavor of the week. HTC just launched the One M8, the first smartphone to feature a dual-sensor camera. At the same time Apple Insider spotted an Apple patent application that was published on Thursday by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The application is titled: “Electronic device with two image sensors.” It describes a camera design that uses two sensors, one for capturing color and the other for capturing luminance, or brightness information. The final image is then created by combining the captured...

gandu. I’m not a parent, I’m photographer, and I do digital b/w quite rarely, even less often than I do b/w film. And I did not forget what it is to be an analog kid, despite I’m beyond thirty now and quite digital. What can I say here… Sally Mann or not, Russian mum or not, these pictures are cool. VERY cool. They wouldn’t gain or lose anything from being or not being color and THAT’s what matters. And equipment… well, without incredible AF and super-high sensitivity of modern camera he probably couldn’t get some of these pictures. And, well,...

A Post By: Tim Gilbreath When we are asked to think of popular subjects for landscape photography, images of beautiful sunsets immediately come to mind. What outdoor photographer worth his or her salt doesn’t have at least a couple of images of the sun dipping below the horizon? In most people’s minds, it is an easy thing to capture; the beauty and scale of the event itself should carry the photo, with minimal interaction from the photographer. But is this really the case? Unfortunately, it’s not. Unless you’re relying on luck alone, you’ll need to possess a few seeds of knowledge...

A Post By: Klaus Herrmann If you are anything like me, then you are always looking for ways to create something original in your photography – images that have not been taken and presented a thousand times before. But being truly original and creating photos that have real impact is the hardest thing of all. It seems there is nothing that hasn’t been done yet. Or is there? In this article, I am going to show you a technique for creating interior photos that you will certainly not find in every other portfolio – photos that will turn heads for sure. The technique that I am referring to...

I’ve mentioned it before, but I think it bears repeating. Twenty years from now, or 30, 40, 50 years from now, this family will look back at these pictures and recall fond memories, much moreso than by looking at beautiful portraits with loads of bokeh. In my mind, these “real” photos have much more value, especially from a sociological and historical perspective. Source Article from...

If that is the line you draw on what camera to buy, go right ahead and choose something else. Except, only Canon offers an enthusiast DSLR with a tilting LCD. • Nikon has it on their entry cameras, but the D7100 up, its fixed.• Sony is an SLT, so no pentaprism there, same with mirror less. Each camera has its pluses and minuses, and if that is what you set as your bar, you will be happy with one of those many other cameras out there. Olympus can do this, and have it weatherproofed. But I ask myself – Do I want the bulk of a tilting/pivoting screen, or do I want my SLR as small as...

Several manufacturers were rumored to launch a smartphone with a QHD-display (2560×1440 pixels) at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona but none of the models introduced at the show featured one of the high-resolution screens. Now the wait is over. The Chinese smartphone manufacturer Oppo has introduced their latest flagship model, the Find 7. This makes the Find 7 the first smartphone to feature a QHD screen. The pixel density of the 5.5-inch display is a staggering 538ppi which should make for ultra-sharp rendering of images and text. Not only is the Find 7’s screen...

HTC has launched their new flagship model, the HTC One M8, at simultaneous events in London and New York City today. As we’ve come to know through various leaks the new device’s headline feature is its Duo Camera. In addition to a 4MP “Ultra Pixel” sensor, the HTC One M8 comes with a secondary image sensor that captures depth information which allows for the application of bokeh effects to your images.  There is also a refocus feature that lets you select the focus point in an image after it has been taken, similar to a Lytro light field camera. Other...

When I gave this talk a title, I called it “A Modern Designer’s Canvas,†because originally I was going to talk about the tools and processes that I use when I’m designing. But being a good designer or developer is about so much more than knowing how to use tools. It’s also about the way we approach what we do and our attitude towards it. I’m going to talk about four lessons that can help us do what we do better. These have been...

A Post By: Miki DeVivo The way your son wraps his little arms around your leg to hug you. The way your daughter leaves little notes for you around the house. How it feels to snuggle, dance, and play. His crooked smile. Her knobby knees. Eyelashes. Elbows. Ankles sticking out from socks. As parents, these are the little moments that we live for, the ones that make our hearts swell, the ones that reflect the spirit of the people we hold most dear. And yet, as photographers, these are the very moments that we tend to gloss over in their familiarity. We’re drawn to that moment that makes us...

A Post By: Zuhair A. Al-Traifi On my trip to Rajasthan, India I packed my Canon 400D (Rebel XTi) with two lenses: my Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 IS USM (for long and candid photos) and my Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II (for indoor portraits and low light photos) because I was aiming for portrait on the streets and specially head shots. Here are a few tips for taking street portraits, from my humble experience, and how to approach people before you take you shot. #1 Always smile You always want to let anyone who sees you with a camera know that you are a cheerful person and therefore they won’t mind...

70 bucks for a strap is high. I would like to offer a suggestion for strap reviews. I appreciate the checked shirt as a backdrop, but why is the camera hanging from the guy’s back? Where are the shirt buttons? Maybe your review should show the strap under different conditions. As not all of us live in New England, perhaps you could offer a choice of different patters? Hawaiian, African, plain white, synthetic, t-shirt, or at least a summer style. Also, how about a shot of the camera hanging under one arm? Cummon guys! 😉 Source Article from...

Loved the Staff Riding doc – but I just took a look at the NYT High Rise thing and although it’s good, the rhyming commentary makes it sound like a fairy tale, which makes me doubt its veracity. Also, if you try to go back to a previous section, the commentary goes out of sync by a whole section or more. Disappointing. Well… the official story is they always left the cameras they brought to the moon’s surface but took the film backs back home, right? I think that’s a pretty solidly documented fact. Anyway, is it just me, or does this camera kit look like a mix between the 500 EDC, some of which did go to the moon (but were left there), and 500 EL/M which didn’t? Looks like the film magazine is from the latter model, meaning that no part of this camera has been to the moon. Now, just for claiming that the camera has been to the moon and obviously making some alterations to the camera...

You are wrong, mostly. An slr w/o any electronic parts, no sensor, used to cost more than the basic ones do today. The difference wqs that the top dslr still didn’t carry much technology, besides the OPV and the shutter mechanism. It was, therefore, not much more expensive than the basic models. Think Nikkormat and Nikon F. As technology evolved, especially metering and AF, things started to get more complicated. Todays cameras use so much technology and the sensor/ADC system, which was then the film. Think of how much you spent in film, film development, printing in those days, and...

It seems to me that the electronics companies (Samsung, Sony, Panasonic) generally has poorer JPEG engines than the more traditional photography companies (Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Fujifilm). There’s no reason why it should be that way, so I wonder why? It’s not like they don’t have the resources. I think the images are fascinating in a disturbing way. It’s rather like, wherever these places are, in the vast majority of cases if you live near them, they rather overwhelm the landscape, especially at night. It’s really quite “in your face” for those who live around them, and I’m sure that’s part of why you won’t see these things, at least the ones built recently, located anywhere near elite neighborhoods. There’s one other thing it calls to mind that really has nothing to do with crime or punishment or discrimination at all, and...

I don’t remember Kodak ever wanting that much to compete with Canon and Nikon, for instance, at least in terms of IQ. It was mostly about cheap and average products. Their appealing, as I remember, used to be about offering something different, interesting, trendy, but average image quality. If we look at Kodak with the right eyes, these offers seem adequate and make all sense. I had a V570 and it had just average IQ, but it was an very interesting camera featurewise, designwise, and even constructionwise. The problem is that Kodak wasn’t keeping up in the average and was playing...

A Post By: Andrew S. Gibson Earlier in the year I compared the EOS 5D Mark III and 6D, Canon’s least expensive full-frame cameras. Today I’m going to look at two other models that cause confusion: the Canon EOS 70D vs Canon 700D (Rebel T5i). Note: North America readers will know the EOS 700D as the Digital Rebel T5i. EOS 700D is the European name for the same camera. It is called the Kiss X7i in Japan. The confusion arises because many photographers, when buying a new camera, start by searching online for information. While there are lots of websites that list the differences between...

A Post By: John Davenport There’s really no question that wedding photography is one of the most common forms of professional photography and if you’ve recently become the owner of a DSLR odds are sooner or later someone you know might ask you to photograph their wedding. Though this might be a tempting offer, I want you to think long and hard before saying yes, because photographing a wedding is a lot more than pointing a camera and capturing the moments. To help drive home this point I’m telling a bit of a story today. My story is about why, even though photographing this wedding was...

Oly 12/2 is more expensive ($800 MSRP vs $400 for Samyang, although from time to time you can buy it with a camera for $600, including now), but it is also much smaller, lighter, has autofocus and electronics for automatic in-camera corrections of distortion, vignetting and on the latest cameras also CA).If it were available for $600 without a camera, this Samyang would not have a chance… Well, on ebay used Oly 12mm go for as low as $467. This Samyand does not have chance. Maybe for poorer systems, but not for m43. Source Article from...

LUUV is a Berlin-based start-up that is aiming to produce and market a camera stabilizer for smartphones and actions cams, such as the GoPro. There is an abundance of similar devices available already but LUUV’s design is unique because it allows for upside-down filming at very close proximity to the ground. Its developers also promise easy control with your thumb and index finger, and a quick balance setup for the capture device you are using. It’s also worth mentioning that the LUUV device is a 3D-printed product. Current prototypes are made on smaller printers but...

“The AVCHD format is not bad, in my opinion. They said it is not good, but at 28 Mb it is a pretty high-volume format, and I think it is using about the best compressed format you can get (H264 I believe). “ Yes, for the time being, H.264 is the best. (The even more storage-saving H.265 isn’t widely supported on the encoder / SoC level yet.) Nevertheless, it’s not only a question about the format (H.264 AVC vs. MPEG4 ASP vs. M-JPEG etc.), but also the quality of the encoder. For example, one of the earliest consumer P&S cameras to bring true 720p30 video recording...

The Wall Street Journal has discovered a patent filing with the Korean Intellectual Property Rights Information Service that seems to indicate Samsung is experimenting with transparent displays for digital cameras. The idea behind the concept is that the photographer and their subject can maintain eye-contact while the image is being framed. Looking at the image above, the transparent display is incorporated into a compact camera with a retractable lens. The concept could be equally applicable to larger cameras, even mirrorless system cameras with interchangeable lenses. According...

Taking A Closer Look At Arabic Calligraphy
By Rafiq Elmansy
March 20th, 2014
Calligraphy, Inspiration, Legacy
0 Comments
Arabic calligraphy was originally a tool for communication, but with time, it began to be used in architecture, decoration and coin design. Its evolution into these major roles was a reflection of the early Muslims’ need to avoid, as their beliefs required, figures and pictorials that were used as idols before Islam was established in the Arabian Peninsula. While the Arabic tribes preferred to memorize texts and poetry, the first...

A Post By: Paul Burwell A couple of weeks ago it was -30 Celsius (-22 Fahrenheit) and I was intent on photographing a pair of Red-backed Voles that seem to have established themselves in the backyard of my home in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Before I got myself a new gadget, I probably would have suited up in my heavy duty Canada Goose parka, some long underwear, snow pants and about four hand warmers and camped out for a morning to get a few shots of these cute little guys. But now I’m a bit older and maybe even a bit wiser and I do so love my technology. And one of those technological...

A Post By: John Davenport Top Photo Spots is a hugely ambitious project headed up by James Brandon (a regular  dPS writer) that aims to take the guesswork out of travel photography. James has asked me to introduce TPS here on Digital Photography School in hopes of bringing attention to the project and helping bring his vision to life. It’s a great idea and one, that if it can be accomplished, could become a go-to resource for photographers looking to find locations for photography around the world – however it’s a long way from that point right now. So what is Top Photo Spots? The...

actually this is a good buying guide for new amateur users (with some modifications). just plan a system like Jarvis and that’s the cheapest (best cost performance) plan than keeping buying low quality gears = waste of money. some alternative gears may be – instead of two D4’s, one D800/D610 or D700, plus one D7100, – instead of two 5D3’s, one 5D3/6D, plus one 70D, – Canon 24-70/2.8L2 and 70-200/2.8LIS2 instead of cheaper lenses, – 50/1.4 (Sigma 35/1.4) instead of 35/1.4L, – get the most robust tripod/head that you can carry first, Source...

Well, I can definitely see applications in science – ultra high resolution recording of type-specimens and museum objects come to mind. In art, I can see some curatorial processes such as restoration and authentication benefiting from this sort of imaging. Also, although the images linked here are being dismissed as ‘boring passport photos’ by some, it’s possible (probable even) that they will come to be seen as works of art at some point. I mean, Gursky’s “Rhein II” is quite valuable now, so… How about the creation of very detailed panoramas...

A Post By: Shiv Verma Flash Metering Systems TTL, A-TTL,  E-TTL and E-TTL II Terms used in this article are Canon specific but there are the same or similar terms for Nikon, Sony, Olympus and other camera manufacturers. When you use your camera’s metering system, the meter will measure the reflected light from your subject (see Metering Modes and How Your Camera Meter Works).  This is not the case when you use your camera with a flash, either a pop-up or mounted on your camera’s hot shoe and set to one of the TTL modes. (TTL is an acronym for Through The Lens) Irrespective of which...

Not too bad, if it costed one half 🙂 Samsung should concentrate on making a decent alternative to a6000, in that price range, with evf, rangefinder stile, new aps-c sensor, better iq. Samsung has announced its new NX mini mirrorless camera, which uses a smaller sensor and lens mount than its existing NX system. Sporting a new 20.5MP 1″-type BSI-CMOS sensor, the NX mini is the slimmest mirrorless camera on the market. It uses a new NX-M lens mount (with a 2.7x crop factor), with two lenses available at launch: a 9-27mm zoom F3.5-5.6 OIS zoom (equivalent to 24-73mm) and 9mm F3.5 pancake (equivalent to 24mm). A third lens, 17mm F1.8 OIS lens (equivalent to 45mm) is coming this summer, along with an adapter for NX lenses. Other features include an LCD that flips up 180...
