Suppose from April 1st iOS, Windows and MacOS go subscription, and only those with subscription can connect to web, let’s say. I doubt from April 2nd any dpreview surfer will operate as a root on their machine running Linux. With its 16MP ISOCELL 1/2.6-inch sensor, F2.2 aperture, 4K video, reflector integrated LED-flash, water-resistant body and hybrid AF-system, the recently announced Samsung Galaxy S5 looks like one of 2014’s hottest options for mobile photographers. However, it now looks as if the worldwide market release of the new device, which was originally projected for the 11th of April, could be delayed due to problems in the manufacturing process of the S5’s new 6-element lens. The Korean website ETnews.com reports that currently only around 20 – 30% of the produced units are...

Visual Supply Co., the makers of the popular VSCO Cam smartphone app, has announced the VSCO Artist Initiative which is a $100,000 (~£60,082/~€71,757) scholarship fund “providing artists the resources to pursue their creative vision.” The initiative was set up in order to “honor art and artist by discovering, funding, advising and promoting creatives from all corners of the globe.” It’s initially funded with $100,000 and the idea is that profits from prints and exhibitions will be reinvested, making the VSCO Artist Initiative a sustainable project...

A Post By: Helen Bradley Straighten an image in Photoshop While most photo editing programs have a dedicated and easily discoverable Straighten tool, Photoshop does not and never has had. Instead, prior to Photoshop version CS6, it was notoriously difficult to straighten a photo. This all changed with the new Crop tool in Photoshop CS6 and CC, and it is now much easier to straighten an image – even if it isn’t easy to determine that the Crop tool is how you do it. I’ll show you how to straighten a crooked image in Photoshop, but before we look at Photoshop CS6 & CC let’s take a...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt With the increase in popularity of the smaller, more portable Mirrorless Four Thirds cameras I’m curious to see where you stand on this discussion. Personally I’m ready to jump on and get myself an Olympus OM-D EM-5, only thing holding me back as of now is justifying the cost of having a second camera. I’m in the “I’m not ditching my full sized DSLR just yet†camp as I still use it for teaching and doing portraits. However the more travelling and photography tours I do, the more appealing the Olympus becomes. One of the guys on my Cuba tour had one...

Winogrand is widely acknowledged and appreciated as one of the greats of this type of photography – and deservedly so. Compare the weird tickish movement of camera to eye and back (the camera barely stopping at his eye) and the elegance of his compositions. It is a bit of a painful bottled phrase to say someone has a good eye, but here is a wonderful example of someone who did. Of course taking as many images as he did helped, I’m sure. But, no doubt, his processing/anticipation of what potentially would resonant visually or otherwise be compelling was special. And, notice the...

I want to let you in on a secret — writing a book is a scary experience. You pour your heart into it and then wait for the reaction when it is published. You can be certain of only one thing: You will be criticized. My book Digital Adaptation will soon be officially released, and I know a lot of clever people are going to disagree with what I have written. They are going to argue that I focus too much on digital and its characteristics and...

Earlier this week, Japanese patent blog Egami reported that Olympus has patented a technology that would allow the photographer to selectively adjust exposure of different scene areas during an exposure. This might allow for a more balanced exposure of scenes where cameras might normally struggle (and the photographer might have to resort to high dynamic range or multiple exposure techniques). In scenes like the one pictured below, it’s hard to avoid overexposure of bright areas or underexposure of dark areas in a single exposure, due to the limited dynamic range of current...

We recently reported on Project Tango, an initiative within Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects group (ATAP) that looks at 3D-mapping of spaces with smartphones. In practice, this means Tango devices could have the ability to 3D-scan their surroundings and use the captured data to generate 3D-maps, virtual environments or even game scenarios. You could measure the dimensions of your home before you go out furniture shopping, navigate the interior of buildings or see the exact location of a product on its shelf in a store, all on your smartphone. Google is planning to...

How To Create An Admin-Manageable Magento Entity For Brands
By Joseph McDermott
March 13th, 2014
Magento, Tutorials
3 Comments
In this tutorial, we will create a new “brand†entity in Magento that can be managed through the admin panel. Once we are finished, you will be able to create, update and delete brands that can be viewed in the front-end independently, much in the same way that you can interact with existing entities such as “products†and “categories.†In addition, we will associate our new brand entity with other Magento entities, such...

A Post By: Scott Wyden Kivowitz Tripods are always a fun topic of conversation but you might not think so because of their simplicity. In more circumstances than others, the tripod that you use really doesn’t make a big difference. The reason is because your tripod is designed to hold your camera and that’s it. But at the same time, different tripods include certain features that are beneficial for special situations. In this article I will identify six different situations in which different tripod features come in extremely handy and can improve your photographs. These situations will...

A Post By: Annie Tao There are countless Photography books and classes that explain exposure, yet after reading or attending them, your photos may not have improved because…well, let’s be honest… some of us Right-Brainers aren’t super technical! I recently taught a small photography class to newbies. I thought hard about how I could explain exposure in the simplest way possible. I found that a parallel example of something relatable was the best way to convey the different aspects that impact exposure. I tested this theory by explaining exposure to my 8-year old daughter and then...

In 2013 smartphone manufacturers put a lot of emphasis on camera quality and imaging features. Nokia and Sony increased the sensor size with the Lumia 1020 and Xperia Z1 respectively. HTC, LG and Nokia introduced optical image stabilization and the Samsung Galaxy Note III was the first volume device to offer 4K video. However, there was one large manufacturer who remained relatively quiet among this flood of smartphone imaging innovations: Apple. Additions like variable exposure in panorama mode and a dual-color flash were nice but didn’t represent major changes to the...

In the case of the drone falling out of the sky, in all likelihood the person hit, or finding it just got himself a new toy, not the case with the truck. For these drones, and the cases I foresee coming up very soon are invasions of privacy issues. Photographers already have shooting boundaries defined by what they can see from a public location standing, but how will this be interpreted with drones that can shoot from higher altitudes, but still not cross the established fence, or property line? The D7000 replaced the D90 as the top consumer DX model. The D300s is the prosumer/pro DX model, and sits above the D7xxx models in the line-up. It hasn’t been replaced yet.Likewise, the D600/610, are consumer FX models (essentially the same bodies as D7100), whereas the D700 was a prosumer/pro FX model, which was, arguably, replaced by the D800. Some people still wait for a ‘true’ D700 successor, though. Source Article from...

Samsung revealed its innovative ISOCELL image sensor technology in September last year, but it has taken until now for the concept to be applied in a device. The Galaxy S5, which was announced at the Mobile World Congress, is the first smartphone from the Korean manufacturer that comes with an ISOCELL camera. Samsung has taken this occasion to publish a video that explains the technology in more detail. According to Samsung, the ISOCELL sensor design achieves better image quality than is normally possible from the very small CMOS sensors used in smartphones and tablets. ISOCELL...

Vistek, especially, is great. (Except that I’m not sure that the bottom floor makes the same kind of sense today as it did in the Acetate Era, when consumables like film, paper and chemistry were the most likely reason to go there.) It’s incredibly handy to have a place you can go this morning to pick up some weird grip stuff you need for this afternoon’s shoot, and to have staff that knows how to solve a problem that, left to your own devices, you’d go about trying to solve the hard way. The camera/lens selection and stock is secondary (though pretty comprehensive);...

Taking A Second Look At Free Fonts
By Jeremiah Shoaf
March 12th, 2014
Fonts, Opinion Column, Typography

Once thought of as amateurish by professional designers, free and open-source fonts have gone through something of a renaissance in just the last few years. The quality of available free fonts has increased dramatically. To be frank, free fonts don’t have a good reputation, and often they are knock-offs of thoroughly crafted, already established typefaces. So is it time for professional designers to take a second look? First, A Story...

As more and more people are using tablets to read PFRE e-books I’ve been getting more questions about how to get PDFs to your tablets. So I’ve created a page that answers many of the standard questions on this subject. It’s called Reading-pdfs in the menu bar at the top of the blog. All PFRE e-books are distributed in PDF form. This allows reading on any of your devices including Desktops, Laptops, Tablets and even SmartPhones (if you have good eyesight). There are several ways to access your PDF files files from all of your devices: DropBox When you sign up for a free DropBox account...

A Post By: Darren Rowse A little over a month ago here at dPS we launched Striking the Pose – an eBook all about posing portraits – our fastest selling eBook ever. As an Early Bird bonus for those who picked up that eBook we gave everyone who bought it in the first month a Posing Printables bonus that contained 67 Poses that you could use in your posing shoots. This early bird offer is now over but we had so much positive feedback about these printables that we’ve now made them available for you to purchase as a stand alone product for just $10. It includes 67 poses which are broken...

A Post By: Aaron Hockley As photographers, we often note that one way to make interesting images that are different from the norm is to get our camera to out-of-the-way places that haven’t been flooded with photographers. But what about those times when you’re heading somewhere that has been photographed millions of times already? Is it possible to create interesting photos of tourist destinations? Can you create something intriguing if you’re headed to the Eiffel Tower, Golden Gate Bridge, Great Wall of China or Mount Rushmore? I say yes. Let’s consider how you can make an...

A Post By: Gavin Hardcastle ‘Condensation’ By Gavin Hardcastle – Location, Gastown, Vancouver, BC Adapt or die. It’s the way of the world, and with the ever changing rhythms of the digital age, you’ve got to be light on your feet in order to survive. I’m no oracle, but I direct these words of warning to all software companies that have a vested interest in HDR (High Dynamic Range) processing for photography. If you’ve seen any of my work, you’ll know that I rely on HDR photography techniques to handle the huge dynamic range in the scenes that I shoot. The thing is, ever since...

Last month we got to spend a short time with Nikon’s latest 1-System camera: the V3. This camera is arguably the most enthusiast-oriented Nikon mirrorless yet, with an advanced autofocus system, twin control dials, super-fast continuous shooting (with AF), Raw support, and 1080/60p video. The V3 also supports an optional 2.36 million dot EVF as well as a grip that not only gives you something more substantial to hold on to, but also an additional shutter release, custom button, and control dial. A sleeker look, but goodbye EVF (sort of) The Nikon 1 V2 was a rather...

The Nikon 1 V3 takes another step towards offering a truly enthusiast-friendly 1 Series camera, yet still I find it hard to make sense of the company’s Mirrorless strategy. When it was launched, the 1 System appeared to be aimed at what would, in the US, be called the ‘Soccer Mom’ crowd. It’s a slightly awkward piece of demographic shorthand but it’s an evocative image – someone who perhaps doesn’t have the time or the interest to learn about cameras and wants to get photos of fast-moving kids (playing Association Football, perhaps). The 1 J1...

Nikon has announced the Nikon 1 V3, the latest addition to the company’s mirrorless lineup. The V3 sports a new 18.4MP 1″-type CMOS sensor that lacks an AA filter, but has on-chip phase detection that covers nearly 100% of the frame. Combined with the Expeed 4A processor, the V3 can shoot at 20 fps with continuous AF, and 60 fps with single AF. Other features include twin dial control, a tilting 3-inch touchscreen LCD, manual exposure control, 1080/60p video, and built-in Wi-Fi. Something that’s disappeared since the V2 is an electronic viewfinder, which is now an...

The current DX 55-300 isnt as well constructed, has a plastic mount, and to use it on the 1 System requires the additional FT-1 adaptor.. The 70-300 includes Nano coated, Super ED, Metal construction and doesnt require the FT-1.. I think the 2x price is justified. No? .. and comparing the FX 70-300, its around 590 + 200 (for FT-1) around 800.. so.. the actually price for the 70-300 1 system is 200s more.. If you already have this setup, then getting the new lens is pointless in my opinion. But if you dont have the 70-300 and FT1.. it looks like a good deal.. and it has a tripod mount to...

You still think Instagram is for cat pictures and selfies only? Think again. Forbes published an article on Brooklyn-based photographer Daniel Arnold whose checking account balance was getting alarmingly close to zero when he decided to have a go at selling prints of his images and posted the following message to his (at the time) 22,000 followers: Hello, I just turned 34 this second. For one day only I am selling 4×6 prints of whatever you want from my Instagram archive for $150 each. I swear I will never sell anything this cheap again. If you’re interested, send a screenshot of...

A Post By: Jackie Boldt Jackie is the creator of the Portrait Photography Pricing Workbook – on sale now, for a limited time at SnapnDeals. Are you 100% confident you are making a profit with each and every client? As artists, photographers may not be as business-minded as they should be. This can get many of us into trouble, both legally and financially. In order to call your photography business successful, it should first and foremost be profitable. If you are not making money from your photography business, you need to call it what it is: a hobby. How do you make sure you are not...

A Post By: Rick Berk Environmental portraits typically show the subject in their natural environment. They are different from traditional portraits in that they tend to show more of the character of the subject, rather than just the subject in front of a neutral background. Most people, unless they are professional models or natural hams, tend to stiffen up in front of the camera. Because your subject is in his or her natural environment, they tend to be more relaxed, resulting in better facial expressions and body language. Environmental portraits are my favorite way to photograph people. I...

No, the court in Japan, which is there to protect both of their interests, decided that Nikon was the wronged party, but not nearly as egregiously as Nikon had claimed! Just because Sigma, who makes many great lenses, is smaller does make it alright to use and profit from another’s intellectual property without appropriate license. If a country allows its manufacturers to copy batteries or software and sell it we call it piracy, and condemn the country for not properly enforcing copyright and patent law. Explain to me; how does being a small corporation suddenly makes it right to live...

HTC was expected to launch its new flagship smartphone, the successor to last year’s HTC One, at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona but we waited in vain. All we got from the Taiwanese manufacturer at the show was the Desire 816 mid-range device. By now it seems the new model will finally see the light of day at an event on March 25. Today some of the rumors that have been floating around the web for a while have been pretty much confirmed by a leaked snapshot of a print brochure from Australian carrier Telstra. At DPReview Connect we are of course most interested in the...

A Post By: Patrick McPheron Get out there and create! Do a photography project for yourself As photographers, it’s natural we all reach that point where we become a bit bored with our work, especially if you work on the same type of photography everyday. After thousands of landscapes and flower photos, you can start feeling that desire to do something different. Starting a personal photography project can help ignite that creative fire again. Don’t sit around and wish you had creative projects to work on. Get out there and create exactly what you want! Working on personal projects allows...

A Post By: Rick Berk When photographing landscapes, it can sometimes be difficult to produce a an image that is focused in its content, that leads the viewer’s eye exactly where you as the artist want it to go.  Sometimes, even though you may be presented with a beautiful vista, an image may not present itself and you have to work to find it. Here are five basic steps to help you take better landscape photos. I follow these any time I’m looking to create a landscape image. #1 Find your subject Sometimes it’s easy. You choose a building, or a rock formation, or a tree, and it all...

As photographers struggle with the slumping economy and an ever-increasingly competitive landscape, wedding photography seems to be one of the industry’s steadier income streams. People continue to get married and most hire photographers to capture their special day. Of course, photographers also face competition from, and frustration with, wedding guests, some toting DSLRs, and armies of others raising their smartphones and tablets at every opportunity. Despite its challenges, wedding photography can be financially rewarding whether it’s your full-time business or a part-time...

Sadly, it appears to be still the same 18-200 OS HSM I had few years ago: very soft on long end, pronounced CA wide… Bokeh is nervous as it’s always been. This lens (assuming it does the same as the previous model, based on samples here) is great for close-up shots zoomed in but in other aspects nothing to impress much. I couldn’t see any shots done at 35-37mm focal length nor about 85-90mm (this is where the previous version had both stiffer zoom operation AND it could not have a correct focus regardless what you tried, including MF). I’m not convinced this lens...

Hovering the mouse over it a box appear showing the cameras were added to my short list, but I can’t find any way to get to the comparison ! Clicking in the menu on the compare item includes all the cameras, not the ones I have already chosen. 2) it would be nice if there was a click box under each of the main category, where I could include both the RF and SLR style under mirror less, or both the large size and mid size SLR...

A Post By: Jeff Guyer It’s amazing how quickly things change. There was a time in the not-too-distant past when nobody really took camera phones all that seriously. I can even remember a heated debate about eight years ago in which a friend of mine– a seventh-generation photographer whose great grandfather photographed the emergence of New York City at the turn of the 19th century– said to me, “Listen– My camera doesn’t make phone calls, and my phone doesn’t need to take pictures.†Now armed with the latest iPhone, an arsenal of photo apps, and an Instagram account, his tune...

The magic is the control board. The Gopro ones I have use Martinez boards and the NEX-7 one uses a HoverFly board. There is nothing new here the Multirotor and Helicopter world have been playing with these for over 3 years now. What his appears to miss is vibration isolation. All of mine have that to prevent Jelo but are also a lot bigger. His marketing appears to be to make a plug and play system for those who don’t look or don’t want to look too far for a solution. Admittedly all my gimbals needed fine tuning to the aircraft and even altering to do what I wanted. Something his,...

A Post By: Mike Moloney A great deal of post processing can be done in Photoshop, more than most photographers realize actually. As a designer, I didn’t have Lightroom, and just wanted to adjust my photos to look a little nicer, little did I know the power behind Photoshop and its post processing capabilities. Today I am going to give you some tips and tricks I learned that increased my efficiency within Photoshop. 1 – Photoshop Layout and Organization The first way to increase efficiency before doing any photo editing, is to organize and optimize your Photoshop layout. Setting up and...

This is old news even if the individual promoting it doesn’t realize it. I have a friend that built a home brew steady cam using a control system/circuit board from a Ukrainian designer and three gimbal motors. He uses the concept with his helicopter mounted GoPro camera as well as with a handheld version for his NEX-6. My friend built his system from scratch but if you go to ebay you can find numerous suppliers of two and three gimbal camera stabilization systems for GoPros and small mirror less cameras. They don’t look as elegant as the system described here but they work...

WordPress has come a long way since its genesis in 2003. Once reserved for humble blogs, it now powers websites for some of the world’s largest companies and is even being promoted as a platform to power the next generation of Web apps. As a result of this increasing popularity, over the last couple of years my team and I have been regularly tasked with building ever more complex WordPress websites and...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt Now that I have your attention you might be able to guess what this week’s photograph challenge is right? Weekly photography challenge – fast cars! You may be thinking, “I don’t live near a race trackâ€, so I’m way ahead of you. Just to clarify this challenge a little, the goal is to make the cars look like they are going fast. They don’t actually have to be doing so! How to add motion So how do you add motion to your car images? One way is panning. Another is to shoot from inside a moving car – just please make sure you are NOT the driver!...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt Last week I shared some great images of boats, so I thought I’d continue with the transportation theme and take a look at some images of speeding cars. Fast cars! In fact, some are so fast they didn’t even show up in the image! You figure that one out. I love shooting cars by panning to create some motion. Having just been in Havana, Cuba classic cars were in abundance. Enjoy these images of fast cars. “Few of the stories … are not quite as fantastic as the one that…” – Hmm. Thought about that; you might want to remove the “not”, then the sentence would be not quite as fantastic as if you removed the “quite” as well. The Auto ISO really needs an update as it does NOT work properly in any other mode besides the Manual mode. The camera does not open aperture (up to widest possible) or adjust shutter speed (to roughly the 1/focal length rule) before adjusting the ISO, it maxes out the ISO before adjusting shutter speed or aperture! Every other sensible camera on the planet does it differently (Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, etc). He**, even on my Sony RX100 the Auto ISO works as it should, but not on the A7! A Post By: Jeff Guyer The SensorKlear Loupe Kit from LensPen. A couple of years ago, I decided it was time to face my fears head-on. Since the day I had unboxed my first DSLR I’d fallen victim to all of the various doomsday warnings about the horrors that could befall me if something went wrong while cleaning my sensor. Don’t get me wrong– those warnings are all valid. Messing this up could scratch the sensor, push it out of alignment, or even break it, just to name a few. I’d always figured that if something was going to go wrong, I wanted it to be someone else’s fault– someone...

A Post By: Kav Dadfar There’s no doubt that one of the best times to visit a place is during a festival or event. From the Rio Carnival to the full moon parties in South East Asia, places come alive during these periods, and that means great opportunities for photographs. One of the oldest and biggest events is the annual Venice Carnival (February 15th to March 4th this year) which transforms this already beautiful city, into a vibrant and colorful extravaganza. Thousands of people congregate in St. Mark’s Square to admire the extravagant costumes, wonderful music and historic...

@dg90: you wrote that in the comments section of a review concerning Pentax 😉 I personally don’t believe that DPR favours one brand over the next, but here’s some numbers that BorisAkunin gathered a bit more than a month ago: “Nikon -vs- Canon:In 2010, the reviews for the 60D and D7000 where both done 76 days after the announcement, 2-3 years later the 70D-review and the 6D-review took 121 and 148 days while the D7100- and D600-reviews only took 63 and 61 days. The Nikon reviews seem to get priority… Olympus:The OM-D E-M1 review was done 48 days after the...

Today EyeEm has announced on its blog that it will run the EyeEm Market in partnership with stock image giant Getty Images. Florian Meissner, one of the co-founders of EyeEm and the company’s CEO commented on the partnership: “What sets EyeEm imagery apart is that our community is inspired by and captures an often unexpected look at the world around us. Monkeybrain: looking at the photos, it seems impossible to fit the US grip underneath the European grip, so one must come off to fit the other. Imaging Resource has a photo and some more info on this page (search for ‘Custom Grip’): www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/canon-g1x-ii/canon-g1x-iiA.HTM They say the bulbous grip will be sold as an accessory in the US, so it must be user interchangeable. I still don’t know if the European camera will come with both grips in the package, or just the bulbous one. If the latter, there won’t be a way for Europeans to get the US grip, since it...

As UX professionals, we often lead design exercises with our stakeholders, including immediate team members and external clients. In these brainstorming sessions, participants identify opportunities to improve the design, thereby aligning everyone’s vision and expectations of the project. During such activities, teams will generate concepts as paper or whiteboard sketches. While these artifacts give...
