A Post By: Anne McKinnell Animals, especially wild ones, make such beautiful subjects that we cannot resist turning our cameras on them to capture images of these majestic creatures in their natural state. Unlike a landscape, creatures are constantly in motion, and unlike most people, they can be pretty uncooperative when it comes to getting their picture taken. This can make for a lot of botched pictures. Here are a few tips on how to avoid some of the common pitfalls of wildlife photography. 1. A Tiny Subject It’s tough to approach a wild animal – they are easily spooked. Because of...

A Post By: Andrew S. Gibson We’ve already looked at how you can use Lightroom Collections to organize your images and how to upload your photos directly from Lightroom to Flickr and 500px using Lightroom’s Publish Services. But did you know that there’s a way to upload photos directly to your own photo website from Lightroom? Before I explain precisely how to do that let’s think about the advantages of such a method: You can decide which images to add to your website while in Lightroom. Decision made, it takes only a few seconds to add them to the appropriate Published Collection and...

I’m not sure I get it. So the photographer takes a picture. Getty gives it away for free for non-commercial use and earns money from it through ads. Photographer gets nothing. Doesn’t seem like a good incentive for photographers. Why would one want to give their work away, so that some corporation can profit off it? But the general idea of making photos available for free and monetizing them is an interesting one, especially today, when ‘theft’ of images is rampant. But without photographers getting their fair share, it just looks sleazy. It kinda seems to me that...

I look for revelations in each interview, whether there is that “you chose us, we didn’t choose you, deal with it” attitude, or that transparent concern that displays affinity to customers. If the representative can’t do but mouth corporate talk, at least the first attitude immediately displays itself so it gives you that period of adjustment or time to think about alternatives. The future is important, so I want to know where they’re taking me. Don’t want someone whose vulnerable to the Nokia syndrome, someone who does not believe that change is coming,...

@Butler, the GX7 shameful review continues to haunt dpr, and rightly so. Your grand defence of the GX7 score being lower hinges on image quality. So I threw the E-M1 into your widget, and guess what? It scored higher on RAW IQ than the Fuji. Now guess what? The E-M1 has a Panasonic sensor. Hah!You scored the Fuji above the GX7 for jpeg IQ, yet all the readers here say the fuji jpegs are bad. Hah!You scored the Fuji way below the GX7 for video quality, but I guess that doesn’t count because there aren’t any images in video? So every single aspect of your score on IQ grounds just...

2014 is still young but the largest show for mobile devices and technology – the  Mobile World Congress in Barcelona – has just shut its doors which makes this a good point in time to look back at the most interesting new products on show. In 2013 mobile imaging technology made a massive leap forward. We saw the introduction of bigger imaging sensors on volume models such as the Nokia Lumia 1020 or the Sony Xperia Z1. Optical Image Stabilization became a standard feature on Nokia’s Lumia line and some Android high-end devices, such as the HTC One or LG G2. With the...

Rethinking Responsive SVG
By Ilya Pukhalski
March 5th, 2014
CSS, JavaScript, Responsive Web Design

If you haven’t seen Joe Harrison’s responsive icons technique yet, you’ll most probably be impressed as much as I was when I first discovered it. In this article, I’d like to explore what we can do with SVG beyond “traditional†scalable vector graphics that are used to replace bitmap PNGs. In fact, we can see SVG as an independent module that encapsulates CSS for the customization of views as well as the responsive behavior that...

You’ve probably heard all the noise about Web Components and how they’re going to change Web development forever. If you haven’t, you’ve either been living under a rock, are reading this article by accident, or have a full, busy life that doesn’t leave you time to read about unstable and speculative Web technologies. Well, not me. Web Components are a suite of connected technologies aimed at making elements reusable across...

A Post By: Philipp Dukatz Last year I travelled all across South East Asia – a trip which not only expanded my personal horizon, but also helped to immensely improve my photography. At the beginning of my trip, my biggest struggle was taking good portraits. The problem wasn’t the lack of opportunities; I encountered incredible and the utmost photogenic scenes around almost every corner. Instead, it was that I just felt too shy or not confident enough to get close to my subject. I had lots of excuses which might sound familiar to you: “I don’t want to disturb the momentâ€, “I...

A Post By: Annie Tao Newborn Photographers fall somewhere on a spectrum between producing posed, styled imagery and natural, lifestyle imagery. While I enjoy looking at styled images of sleeping newborns in costume or appearing as though they are holding their own head up with the use of proficient Photoshop work, the emotions and stories captured in Lifestyle Photography images are what make my heart sing! So I stand comfortably and proudly on “side B†of the spectrum. After following the rules outlined in The Sensitive Side of Newborn Photography, I follow these six tips for Newborn...

Well done Fuji. It is important to make cameras fun to own. I dare say they are appealing to a much younger, optimistic and care-free customer segment than the resident old grumps on DPR. Photography is a creative art. It is ultimately about self expression. If a photographer wants to cover his Fuji with a custom colour covering, then good luck to him /her. I know of more than one very serious pro who would love this ! We are meant to have some fun while on this planet. Source Article from...

A Post By: James Maher Coney Island, NY. 1959. From Brooklyn Gang – Bruce Davidson/Magnum We can all learn a great deal by studying the work of photographer, Bruce Davidson. Born near Chicago in 1933, Davidson has extensively photographed for over 50 years, including subjects such as the Civil Rights Movement in the early ’60s, circus performers, a Brooklyn gang, Spanish Harlem, and a five year project on New York’s subway system in the gritty days of the ‘80s. A few of his main influences were Robert Frank, W. Eugene Smith, and Henri Cartier-Bresson. Davidson joined the Magnum...

A Post By: Desmond Louw Taking photos of cars is such an interesting thing on its own. It’s like science. Every time I shoot a car I learn something from it! I would like to share some basic guidelines to get you started and help you understand this interesting niche in the photography world. 7 Tips for Taking Better Photographs of Cars 1. Shoot at the right time of day This is by far the most common mistake people make when shooting cars. The best time to shoot will be a few minutes after sunset (or a few minutes before sunrise). Use a tripod and get that perfect soft light on the paint!...

Connect smartphone reviews are written with the needs of photographers in mind. We focus on camera features, performance and image quality. The Moto X is the lovechild of the brief tryst between Google and Motorola that began when the search giant bought Motorola Mobility in 2012, and is now ending as Google prepares to sell the business to Lenovo. The handset expresses at least some of the innovation you’d hope would spring from such a union. It listens for your voice even when the screen is off, wakes up when you pull it out of your pocket, and tries to optimize its behavior...

I lot of really good pro photographers working today totally disagree with you. For example, watch this interview by the great David Allen Harvey: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKv1rATlQnE (jump to 1:30 in the video where he talks about shooting with his iPhone). Likewise, other pro photogs that I admire, such as Zack Arias, Jim Richardson, etc. all talk enthusiastically about shooting great photos with their iPhones. Here’s Jim Richardson’s Instagram gallery, mostly shot with his iPhone: http://instagram.com/jimrichardsonng The reality is that today’s smartphones produce...

There are no 6×6 sensors, the largest we’ve got is 53.7×40.2mm (Hasselblad H5D-60) which is still a bit smaller than 645 format on 120 film. This sensor’s dimensions are 43.8×32.9mm, it’s the same size as the CCD used in the old Pentax 645D and it’s actually smaller than the CCD in the Hasselblad H5D-50 (49.1×36.8mm). Guest post by Tony  Colangelo, Victoria, BC: As I approach the end of my second full year as a real estate photographer, I can recall many times when I was confronted with a particularly daunting challenge at a photoshoot. I can also easily remember the confusion and feelings of being overwhelmed and, yes, even a bit fearful in those moments. It’s my guess, though, that all new real estate photographers have felt those very same feelings from time-to-time. So, using my background as a psychologist, I thought it might be interesting to take those experiences to write an article that...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt This week I found a video interview with photographer Joey Lawrence. When he first hit the photography scene he was only 16, that was 2006. By 2009 he was living in NYC shooting celebrities, traveling the world, and had an instructional DVD. Who can say they did they all before they were 21?! I have to admit when I first saw his work, I had two reactions. I was really, really impressed I was also a little pissed off! Here was this kid doing what I had done for almost 20 years, and hitting the big time almost over night. I admit, I was a little jealous. But I...

A Post By: Konstantin Shtondenko It happens all the time. You came from a shoot, moved everything from memory cards and… your phone rings. It’s your friend and he wants to see what you’ve got. Right now. That’s not always so easy, especially if you are shooting RAW. You need to export images to JPEG, upload somewhere, send your friend a link and occasionally explain what to do with this link in a series of emails. Things get even harder if it’s a client and you want to get directions before starting the post-processing step. I have a good news. Just recently appeared a new...

A Post By: Paul Burwell Of course, I always like to get the photo as perfect as possible, right in the camera.  But, sometimes the situation just doesn’t allow for a lot of adjustments to be made before the opportunity is lost. Today’s image of a Canadian Lynx kitten was one of those situations. The kitten was in a forest on a bright sunny day with mottled light, pretty much nightmare’ish light.  Fill flash would have helped, but I’m hesitant to use fill flash with most mammalian critters because the flash will often show off hairs that our eyes don’t normally see, thereby...

I have to admit that seeing photos on the plethora of “joke; funny moment; prank etc” sites all over the net make me smile as well on many occasions, while I don’t perceive the great majority of them to be appealing photos in their own right. These here are not much different to me, except for the logistics that went into them and the coherent theme. Maybe they were intended that way, if so, it does not work for me (it does not have to, like I said before). Back to your question – do I think any of the tons of “fun” photos that are omnipresent should be...

Charlie Dresen, in Steamboat Springs, CO. showed me an example of a new listing he did a property video for. I think this is an example that shows that property video can work for property that are not upper-end luxury properties. This listing is a $289,000 1326 SF condo at The Ranch in Steamboat Springs. Charlie said that he and his marketing coordinator (the lady in this video playing the seller) shot this in 1.5 hours doing 3 takes on each scene and then he spent another 1.5 hours editing. Beware though, Charlie makes this look easy but as regular readers of This Week In Real Estate Video...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt Earlier today I shared some fabulous images of boats – all sizes, types, and colours. Now it’s your turn. Show us your best boat images for the weekly photography challenge. Even if you don’t live near the ocean or large body of water, try something creative. What about a toy boat in the bathtub? Winter got you snowed in? How about the antique store where they have boats in bottles! Think outside the box . . . or bottle, and show us your boats! Here’s couple more images to get you started. The first two are even my own images, just to show you I can do...

Google has launched an update for its Google+ for Android app, and that’s good news for all mobile photographers with Android devices. Most of the new features are imaging-related and make Google+ a more powerful image editing, storing and sharing platform. Vic Gundotra, VP Engineering at Google, shared some detail about the update on his Google+ profile: Non-destructive photo editing across devices Starting today you can start your edits on one device, and continue (or start over) on another. This means you can backup full-resolution photos from your desktop, edit them in...

A Post By: Charlie Borland Many landscape photographers’ love for wilderness, drives them to venture far in search of wild and remote locations. The lure of solitude and unfamiliar scenery motivates many to photograph far off the beaten path. Adventure photography at it’s best. Backpacking, rafting, canoeing, trekking, climbing, and other self-propelled modes of travel are a few of the ways these remote locations are accessed and used. Those adventures are often with other people and the rewards can be stunning scenery, wildlife, and of course: the wilderness experience. On a canoe trip...

Gibson is the author of Understanding Lenses Part II: A Guide to Canon Normal & Telephoto Lenses, special deal on now 40% off at Snapndeals for a limited time only. Wide-Angle Lenses A potential issue with wide-angle lenses is that you try to include too much information in the frame. It takes real skill to create a strong composition with lenses that have a wide field-of-view. It is easier with normal and telephoto lenses, because you can utilise their narrow field-of-view to compose strong yet simple images with little in the background to distract...

Wait and see on the G1Xii for me… I handled the G1X Mki in the store the other day, and thought it was kind of cool. The viewfinder was adequate. I’m not sure about the same camera without a viewfinder. Also, I’m suspicious of the Mk ii lens/aperture/size/zoom combination. I have CHDK on my SX230HS, and it is an eye-opener to see what the photos look like in raw. At the wide end, for example, I get a completely vignetted result, wider field of view than the jpeg, and corners black! Obviously, to produce the jpeg, Canon does some serious cropping, stretching, etc. in-camera....

Nikon has issued a worldwide technical service bulletin regarding ‘dust’ issues on its D600 DSLRs. In a surprising development (ahem…) Nikon says that it has evaluated user reports and has ‘determined’ that spots on the sensor are caused by dust particles which are visible in images taken in certain situations. The company will be offering all D600 owners a full inspection, cleaning, and replacement of the shutter mechanism in their cameras, free of charge and regardless of whether the original warrantee has expired. A few HTML elements don’t play nice with responsive layouts. One of these is the good ol’ iframe, which you may need to use when embedding content from external sources such as YouTube. In this article, we’ll show you how to make embedded content responsive using CSS, so that content such as video and calendars resize with the browser’s viewport. A Post By: Jamie Pflughoeft Top 10 Pet Photography Tips and Techniques The pros make it look easy, but anyone who has ever tried to photograph an unpredictable creature like a cat or a dog knows it is anything but. Here are some pet photography tips that the pros use to help you ‘get the perfect shot’. 1. Relax Animals are like little emotional sponges, and if you are stressed and anxious, they will sense it and become stressed and anxious too. A stressed animal will give you ‘ears flattened’, ‘concerned eyes’ looks, which don’t translate well ‘on film’. Take a deep breath...

A Post By: Jeff Guyer The decision of whether to watermark images posted online is a frequent topic of debate. Proponents say it’s an added measure of security–a notice to would-be image thieves that the photographer takes his or her copyright seriously and will defend it like a mama lion protecting her cubs. Others point out that watermarks are distracting, clients don’t like them, and unscrupulous people with decent editing software can make that watermark disappear in the blink of an eye, so what’s the point? Regardless of where you come down on this issue, sometimes you just find...

Creating Responsive Prototypes With Adaptive Views In Axure RP 7
By Will Hacker

Interaction Design, Techniques, User Experience

Responsive Web design has vexed people who build prototypes since the techniques came into use several years ago. While responsive design is an extremely elegant way to handle coding for multiple device types when executed with HTML and CSS, the prototyping tools available to UX professionals have not delivered testable or demonstrable experiences of the same quality. That changed recently with...

A Post By: Prathap DK What is the most important factor in getting your bird photographs noticed by a large audience? Is it the camera or the lens or the bird? Imagine you have a Canon 1DX or Nikon D4 and 800mm lens. You have been to a place to photograph the magnificent Bald Eagles. Everything seems perfect! Isn’t it? But, what if you do not know what makes a good bird photograph? Do you think just by shooting a burst of photographs will give you the best photographs? Definitely not…you may get snapshots but not photographs. “There is nothing worse than a sharp image of a fuzzy...

A Post By: Annie Tao How you shoot a scene determines what kind of story you want to tell and what kind of mood you want viewers to feel when they look at a photo. The power of perspective is beyond the consideration of your photography subjects; it is about the angle of your camera, your proximity to the subjects and what you include in the frame that plays an important role in your final image. Below are examples of different perspectives and why you’d want to take a photograph in that way. Examples of Different Perspectives Shoot from a low position and straight on – to get the...

I liked best his answer that Olympus is an optics manufacturer that also makes cameras. I’m still using the two kit lenses that came with the E-xxx series, both on a DLSR and adapted to m43. They are better than any other kit lens I’ve seen from any manufacturer. I own a couple of Olympus high grade lenses too, which are fantastic. I think Olympus is on the right track with mirrorless. I’ve been reading that Canikon DSLRs and lenses are not too big these days, you know, the usual forum comments, and I had a chance to handle the entry and mid-level offerings from both...

It’s easy to be cynical, but...

No reason not to introduce an additional “nodal slide rail” between the L-shaped bracket and the camera, and then to slide the camera backward on that, adjusting everything until the right point along the lens axis is located to intersect the rotation axis. This could also be your quick-release point maybe, to take the camera on and off the assembly altogether, without upsetting the parallax adjustments for a given lens setup. Source Article from...

You know, I am getting sick and tired of your constant bashing of m43 cameras with your nonsensical (false) comments about their “noise” at all ISOs. I think the problem lies with you. You’ve said this in the Fuji and m43 forums, and even in an Amazon review. You are entitled to your opinion, but unfortunately, your opinion is totally inaccurate. And, by the way, I own BOTH m43 and Fuji cameras, and shoot under a variety of challenging conditions. I have the GX7, E-M1, X-100, and X-E1, and an X-T1 on order. And, guess what, they all serve me well at ALL ISOs. Source Article...

A Post By: James Brandon First off, I am certainly not a lawyer and am not giving legal advice in this article, I’m simply telling my story and how I handle image theft. If you have questions about legal advice, please consult with an attorney. Recently I received a phone call from a family member who believed a local news station was using one of my images as a green screen background. This was interesting considering I hadn’t had any conversations with any news stations recently about such a thing. I asked him to send me a photo of the segment and sure enough, it was mine. I’ve dealt...

I would like to say a big thank you for your awesome feedback and your ongoing comments on that post. It really means a lot to me and shows how many talented and hard working concert photographers are out there. This article is a follow up, and I will go into more details about the “anatomy of a concert photography shoot“. Especially when you are new to concert photography,...

It’s nice to see some progress with the Nikon’s professional “action” camera, and a brave decision to not increase the pixel count of the sensor. Perhaps, video capabilities is the major upgrade. Video bit rates up to 1080@60p is a good addition, but limiting video stream to 42Mbps (10 min limit), and 24Mbps (20 min limit) is not. The D4s can now adjust audio volume as it records, which is good. Unlike existing Nikons, the D4s can now simultaneously output uncompressed video over HDMI and record to internal memory cards –great. However, I’m asking myself,...

The amount of time and money and cutting edge technology involved in this camera is mind boggling. I have but one question: Has Nikon solved the problem of the ‘growing’ rubber grips that plague all nikon’s? D200 and a lens had a whole new set and my D700 is on its third ‘trim’ with the scissors and carpet tape to hold the grip on and my 24-70mm focussing rubber grip is looking like a life saver on a cocktail stick. ..Sort it out Nikon, its beyond a joke. Nikon has released an update to their flagship D4 pro DSLR: the D4s. While not a major upgrade to the camera (hence the ‘s’ in the name), the D4s packs more processing power, a refined autofocus system, faster continuous shooting, and more video features (including 1080/60p support). Two other items pros will appreciate are a ‘small’ Raw size and a noticeable improvement in battery life compared to the D4. The camera will be available in early March for $6499.95 / £5,199.99. Read our First Impressions Review of the D4s and interview with Nikon engineers at...

It’s been a busy day at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona but we had to wait until the evening for one of the most anticipated events of the show — the launch of the Galaxy S5, the 5th generation of Samsung’s high-end Galaxy S smartphone line. Â In terms of design, the new model is very close to its predecessor, the S4, with the same rounded corners and metal band around the edges. However, the S4’s rather cheap looking glossy back has been swapped for a soft-touch “perforated” design which has more of a premium look to it. Despite the visual...

The off-canvas flyout menu has taken over as the primary navigation pattern for mobile layouts — even some desktop layouts have jumped on board. And for good reason: An off-canvas menu is a great way to maintain context while giving the user a lot of additional information. In this article, we’ll talk about why off-canvas has become so successful as a navigation pattern and show its potential to...

See if you use these, or maybe you have some others you can share with us in the comments section. 1. The advantage is that each copy can use a different arrangement of settings to make the image look different; thus you can compare several options to see which gives the best results. Smartphone cameras have improved a great deal over the last couple of years, and those improvements have had a dramatic impact on the market for consumer-level compact cameras. Sales have plummeted as most consumers simply don’t see the point of carrying and paying for a compact camera when their smartphone delivers image quality that is beyond what’s needed for social sharing and on-screen viewing. The situation is slightly different in the enthusiast compact space, though. Compact cameras targeted at enthusiast users come with one feature that until recently no...

A Post By: Alex Smith Tthanks to the wonderful Bridgette for her work as the make-up artist in this image Studio lighting continues to mystify and bewilder many developing photographers. The intimidation of lighting ratios, modifiers, set-ups, etc… often seems as complex as deriving the quadratic equation or suffering through an explanation of Michaelis-Menten enzyme kinetics. Oh yes, for those of you biochemically privy folk, I did just go there! Well, one does not have to get lost amidst the photonic chaos if they understand how to interpret and understand the meaning of light. Wow!...

Now, that thought almost made me shed a tear. A good thing would be an appendix to the will in terms of a list with all accounts and passwords to storage devices (i.e. google drive) and local pc/media servers. An unencrypted hard drive can easily be installed in a new PC. Every time I go through old unprocessed pics I find new ones, interesting expressions, moments, etc. To print all that would be impractical at the time the picture was taken. I went digital in 2001 so soon I will have roughly 1TB of data. It doesn’t cost that much to store that (compare cost to all gear we buy) in a...
