Adobe update adds Fujifilm color profiles to Adobe Camera Raw 8.4 RC

Personal view to which I am entitled – don’t bite my head off. I find it mildly amusing that thousands upon thousands of people abandoned film in their absolute droves and “made the switch to digital”, spent $1000’s (the $ is there for the benefit of my American brothers) on the new gear, computers, software only then to mimic film. If I could understand irony, I think that could be ironic. I use digital, I also use film (B&W, just started to self process colour), I can tell you those “film packs” are just a waste of money esp BW. I can process...

Google’s Project Tango creates 3D-maps of your surroundings

Google’s Project Tango creates 3D-maps of your surroundings Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects group (ATAP), formerly a division of Motorola, has announced Project Tango, in which it has been working with academic and industrial partners from nine countries, and utilized research from the last decade in the areas of robotics and computer vision. According to Google the goal of the project is “to give mobile devices a human scale understanding of space and motion”.  In practice, this means that future mobile devices could have the ability to sense 3D-motion and geometry, allowing them to capture 3D-scans of their...

Fujifilm firmware updates: 56mm lens compatibility and improved OIS

I don’t own any of the cameras concerned. I’m still grinning with delight, though, over the X100 update, a real gift. Fuji loom large in my future, I think. Source Article from http://www.dpreview.com/news/2014/02/21/fujifilm-firmware-updates-56mm-lens-compatibility-and-improved-ois

Don’t leave pictures stranded: Eye-Fi Mobi SD card review

I do astrophotography, and I connect with a USB cable. I’m out there with the scope anyway, so there’s no harm in using a cable. I never, ever post un-processed images, and I generally like to look at them with at least one “sleep” in between looks. And when I’m on vacation, I don’t tell anyone that I’m leaving except those that have to know, and never post pictures until I get back, and usually not for a week or two after that. I don’t want anyone to know that I’m gone. I also would never post real-time images of what I’m doing...

Interview With Matt Mullenweg And Mike Little: WordPress: How It Came To Be And Where It’s Heading Interview With Matt Mullenweg And Mike LittleWordPress: How It Came To Be And Where It’s Heading By Alex Moss February 21st, 2014 Inspiration, Interviews 0 Comments 2013 was a busy year for me for conferences and travel. It was also the year I attended my first (and second) WordCamp. The first was WordCamp UK in July, where I met Mike Little, one of the two co-founders of WordPress. Do You Need to Upgrade to the Latest Camera?

Do You Need to Upgrade to the Latest Camera? A Post By: Katie McEnaney Camera-envy is the bane of many photographers. Discussion forums are filled with conversations about the benefits of the latest and greatest camera gear, and our commercial-driven societies fill us with the deep-seated need for more, more, more! But do you really need to upgrade to the latest camera? By Portrait / Wedding Photographer What matters more: the camera or the photographer? This is the question truly at the heart of most photography gear debates: what really matters? Is it the camera or the photographer? You know what you want the answer to be. When you...

Landscape Photography and Hyperfocal Distance

Landscape Photography and Hyperfocal Distance A Post By: Andrew S. Gibson I can remember when autofocus was relatively new and many photographers distrusted it. Now it’s the other way around – autofocus has become so good and so ubiquitous that manual focus lenses are a rarity. It’s easy to forget that sometimes it’s better to turn it off and use manual focus instead. A good example of this is when you use a wide-angle lens to take a landscape photo. In this situation, you probably want to record the entire scene as sharply as possible. But how do you do this when the nearest part of the scene may be only centimetres (less than...

Don’t leave pictures stranded: Eye-Fi Mobi SD card review

For people who have always been using Extreme pro SD card, the speed with Eye-fi is just unbearable. Here in Sydney I can buy an 32G Extreme pro for A$80 and a Kingston MobileLite Wireless Flash Reader for A$50. Total A$130…..exactly how much Ey-fi ProX2 16G is selling. The kingston only require me to take my card out of the camera, I can live with that. The Ey-fi mobi sells for about A$50 which is same price as the MobileLite Wireless Flash Reader. Yes you have to pay about A$10 for an class 10 card, but there is one thing the MobileLite Wireless Flash Reader can do is back up to a...

Kickstart Your Project With INIT And Grunt

Kickstart Your Project With INIT And Grunt Kickstart Your Project With INIT And Grunt By Anselm Hannemann February 20th, 2014 Frameworks, Optimization, Workflow 0 Comments Whenever you start a project, you have to repeat certain tasks and set up certain structures: create new folders, choose a framework, set up your development tasks. But configuring settings once and reusing them would be simpler. An easy way to achieve this is by using some kind of generator — for example, Yeoman Generator — or tools such as INIT, which can perfectly coexist with and even be used through a generator....

However, it can certainly help you to enhance your best photo into...

Getting Started in Newborn Photography

Getting Started in Newborn Photography A Post By: Maddy Rogers Newborn photography has been around in the United States for fifteen or so years, but it’s only taken hold here in the UK in the last three to four. And take hold it certainly has! All professional photography involves a multitude of skills and newborn photography is no different, with one very important exception. It is the only area of photography that involves the photographer being completely responsible for the safety and welfare of the subject – the baby. As a newborn photographer you will hold, comfort, soothe, pose, wrap, and often even feed and clean up...

Hands-on with the GoPro Hero 3+ Black Edition

“Really good 4K should have 50/60 fps anyway.Otherwise the unsharpness caused by motion blurr is compromising the extra sharpness you get from the extra pixels.” Regarding motion blur, aren’t you confusing frame rate and shutter speed? If you record at 12, 24 or 50 fps, but with the same shutter speed, then there should be no difference in motion blur. You get more jerky movements with lower frame rates, of course, but that’s another matter. Source Article from...

Responsive Design Frameworks: Just Because You Can, Should You?

Responsive Design Frameworks: Just Because You Can, Should You? Responsive Design Frameworks: Just Because You Can, Should You? By Jen Kramer February 19th, 2014 CSS, Responsive Design, Strategy 10 Comments Responsive design is about building a website with a grid-based layout, images that resize and media queries, as described by Ethan Marcotte. After Marcotte defined the technique, responsive design frameworks began to emerge that incorporated these principles. Camera Review – the Sony A7R

Camera Review – the Sony A7R A Post By: Gavin Hardcastle Sony A7R Example shot from one exposure – ‘Ferocious Stump’ By Gavin Hardcastle Initial Impression of the Sony A7R I started writing this Sony A7R Review with the sentence ”I hate the Sony A7R”, such was my vitriol over this infuriating yet impressive piece of tech. And that’s what the A7R is, it’s a technological marvel crammed into a tiny, sharp edged box. If you’re like me, converting from Canon or Nikon, you’ll find the learning curve painful as you discard much of the logic you’ve grown so used to. That being said, each day my hatred of...

Beyond Full Moon Photography

Beyond Full Moon Photography A Post By: Katie McEnaney The rising full moon is a shot on many photographers’ bucket lists, but how many of us remember that the moon is even there on those other 28 days of the lunar month? Forget the moon no longer; there are many great reasons to keep shooting the moon throughout its phases. Better Craters and Contrast Craters are a fascinating feature of the lunar surface, and they are easier to feature when the moon is no longer full. During a full moon, an entire side of the moon is visible and reflecting the sun’s light back to us. Craters, by contrast, look better in shadow, as...

A Type Design Brief: What Is In It, And Why Does It Matter?

A Type Design Brief: What Is In It, And Why Does It Matter? A Type Design Brief: What Is In It, And Why Does It Matter? By Nadine Chahine February 18th, 2014 Calligraphy, Fonts, Typography 1 Comment Type design is equal parts suffering and euphoria. It is a walk along a winding road that goes on for many weeks and months before it’s done. A type design brief is like a charter path: It asks you questions, and the answers will guide you to where you want to be. It will not make the walk much shorter, but the chances of getting lost will be much lower. Below are six questions that will shape the typeface...

The Second Most Popular Lens In Real Estate Photography

The Second Most Popular Lens In Real Estate Photography The most popular subject on this blog is wide-angle lenses. The most popular post on the PFRE is the 2007 post on  wide-angle lenses. It gets a staggering amount of traffic, day in and day out. Makes sense I guess, wide-angle glass is the most important piece of gear a real estate photographer has. I’ve done posts on the most popular lens in real estate photography (the Canon 10-22mm). But when recommending wide-angle lenses to beginners besides the Canon 10-22mm I always mention the Sigma 10-20mm. It is a couple hundred dollars less than the Canon but is available for Canon, Nikon, Sony,...

The 16 Most Photogenic Everyday Objects, Part Two A Post By: James Maher In part 1, I spoke about 16 of my favorite everyday objects to include in photographs.  These objects won’t always make a photo, but when included they will almost always make the scene more photogenic. The purpose of these lists is to help add some inspiration for the next time you walk out the door to photograph. There is beauty to capture around every corner and sometimes it is the simple things that make the most interesting images. What’s on your list of most photogenic everyday objects? 1. Smoke Find some roadwork and wait for magic to happen. This is an...

A Quick and Easy Way to Make Money with your Photography While Having Some Fun A Post By: Valerie Jardin Many photographers have the dream of selling their fine art photography and seeing their prints hanging in collector’s homes. I’m sorry to burst your bubble but that is probably the most difficult way to make money. Even the biggest names in photography don’t make a living solely by selling prints. Yet, it is conceivable to make a little bit of extra cash with your pictures and here is a realistic easy way to make money with your photography. 8.5mm f2.8! Excellent! I only wish the front elements were BLACK! Oh well, can’t have everything, I guess. 😉 M4/3 users have been itching for an ultra-wide prime… wider than 12mm and faster than f4… for quite some time. Hopefully the image quality is on par with the Panasonic 7-14mm f4, the Olympus 12mm f2 or the SLR Magic Hyperprime 12mm T1.6. So, what about the price and shipping date?I suspect M4/3 users will be lining up for this one! Source Article from...

CP+ 2014: Nikon Interview – ‘our cameras need to evolve’

What is missing in all this is the measure of things, or, a sense of perspective. In which terms Nikon sells not enough of N1 cameras? In their own terms? I believe that both Fuji and Pentax will be more than happy with Nikon’s achieved numbers, but Nikon finds it insufficient (to keep its market position?, to secure its execs good bonuses?, or, to make its users really happy? — indeed, in what terms Nikon talks of a ‘failure’?). There is another point: how we know Nikon’s numbers, (or Canon’s for the same matter) and expectations were not, and still are not, unrealistic? It is...

CP+ 2014: Selected highlights of the show

So there was a first to be seen 645D 2014, first to be seen 1.4x TC, first to be seen MF wideangle zoom lens… but Ricoh/Pentax booth seems to have gone invisible while DPR staff toured the halls… at least judging from no stand report and no inclusion in highlights… but then, of course, it can’t be a highlight if it wasn’t reviewed on DPR… 🙂 Source Article from...

CP+ Sigma interview – ‘We survived because we make unique products’

JEROME NOLAS: What’s wrong with Sigma’s camera designs? Be specific? What other company is shipping cameras with 3 layer sensors? Do you think it Sigma’s fault that the buffers can’t keep up with the raw files, or is that a processing problem that can only be solved with time as processors and RAM become faster, cheaper and more capacious? Some problems I can think of with the design of various Sigma DP cameras: The bodies are a bit slippery, and the batteries are too small. Sigma saying that the first SD1 would retail for about $2000 and then launching it at $10,000 and Sigma...

How To Make An Effective Style Guide With Adobe Fireworks

How To Make An Effective Style Guide With Adobe Fireworks How To Make An Effective Style Guide With Adobe Fireworks By Joshua Mauldin February 17th, 2014 Techniques, Tutorials, Workflow 0 Comments I started with style guides like any other obsessive-compulsive designer: with the desire to make it simple to maintain and grow a design. Plus, knowing which component to use in a given situation is nice, too, right? Since making this a regular practice, I’ve found it’s been like having a nice combination of a CSS class and a pattern library all in one. One of the first questions, understandably, is why use...

How to Create Great Photos without Leaving Home

How to Create Great Photos without Leaving Home A Post By: Brian Barthel So you want to take pictures; or do you want to be a photographer? I deal with a strikingly similar question every time I swing a golf club; I want to be a golfer, but with life events and time constraints the reality is I merely play golf. Fortunately, making a great photo doesn’t consume the amount of time 18 holes does and since you’re here reading this, it’s safe to say you want to be a photographer. WHAT TO PHOTOGRAPH? Portraits, landscapes, sports, oh my! As a new photographer it is incredibly tempting to photograph everything, and that’s a good thing...

Buyers Guide – Prime Lenses vs Zoom Lenses

Buyers Guide – Prime Lenses vs Zoom Lenses A Post By: Andrew S. Gibson Canon’s 8-15mm f4L fisheye is an unusual lens, the only fisheye zoom that I know of. Most fisheye lenses are primes. Following on from my article A Concise Guide to Choosing a New Lens I thought it would be interesting to go a little deeper into the question of whether to buy a prime lens or a zoom. First, the definitions: Prime lenses have a fixed focal length. There is no zoom ring and no way to magnify the subject other than moving closer. There are two settings to adjust: aperture (often handled by the camera) and focusing distance. Zoom lenses have a...

Darktable vs Lightroom – Does it measure up?

Darktable vs Lightroom – Does it measure up? A Post By: John Davenport Recently I was introduced to a free open source RAW file editor called Darktable. I know most everyone loves free stuff and quality RAW file editors are not easy to come by with a price tag of $0.00, so I thought it would be worth taking a quick look at Darktable vs Lightroom here on DPS. I’d like to preface this article with a simple disclaimer… I’ve only spent a handful of hours with Darktable and therefore by no means have I mastered the workflow and features packed into it. My intention here is to introduce it to you and share with you some of my...

CP+ Sigma interview – ‘We survived because we make unique products’

Photato, yes this would be it. However it seems like it would do neither very well, but this is hard to judge without having one.Leonard, I perfectly understand stability, and how one should hold a camera to maximise that. Clearly you don’t, because the fact is they’ve done little to maximise what they are obviously concerned about. And whilst your ignorance is amusing, perhaps it is you that lacks the necessary literacy skills to follow on with something other than simple insults! 😉 Source Article from...

CP+ 2014: Fujifilm stand report

Well Fuji’s 16MP sensors captures as much details as many cameras with resolutions even above 20MP.A clean detailed 16MP image is better than a 22MP nosier one, with no more, or almost no more details. Fujis sensors are good even with higer ISO, competing even with some full frame sensors. So still today, with only so many super high resolution cameras, 16MP that is almost equivalent to 24megapixels (sometimes beting them in higher ISO performance), is not a dissadvantage. But I do get that it’s nice to zoom in on details in pictures, so pixels are always nice, as long as they...

CP+ 2014: Things we found that had been cut in half

Too clever by half, and (perhaps the unkindest cut of all) a lopsided point of view. Lots of yen but no yang. The examples are not well-rounded, lack focus, and would shed little light on the subject were they twice the size. The text is plagued with semi-circular reasoning throughout. Something’s missing here, I’m of two minds. Side-splitting nonetheless. Source Article from...

CP+ 2014: Fujfilm interview – ‘The only way is to keep innovating’

@Just another Canon shooter So you saw some false patterns, the D7100 in your comparisson does too, at least on some ISO settings. And the mushyness, well, FujiFilm does look a bit soft in those studio tests (harder to judge in real life situations), but they retain more detail than you would think with that softer look. Who claimed that FujiFilms sensors break the laws of physics? If you are talking about marketing, I would say that both Nikon and Canon claim so too in marketing, with marketing material talking about the amount of pixels, when in reality a lot of them are lost to noise. I...

A look inside Sigma’s lens factory

These very introspective, “pseudo-marketing” videos from Sigma are very well done, and showcase what Sigma prefers to be known for. There is no sign saying “Budget Alternative to the Big Brands!” Rather, we see pride and dedication in the automation, testing and handwork that goes into Sigma products. Yes, the factory looks sterile and boring at times (imagine injection-painting all those lens switches!), and the beautiful scenery interspersed in the video serves mostly as a reminder of why these things are built, not how. Still, I don’t see anything depressing...

CP+ 2014: Fujfilm interview – ‘The only way is to keep innovating’

“I think we did too much too fast, and made too many models.” I believe that’s the first time I’ve seen a camera manufacturer acknowledge that aimless, numerous and boring iterations are detrimental to this business. It couldn’t be a stronger contrast with Sony’s interview a while ago. “Our biggest challenge is customer awareness, and customer education. We think that at least 50% of the market could be mirrorless in the future, but what’s missing is awareness on the part of the consumers about the benefits of mirrorless.” I absolutely...

John Stanmeyer wins World Press Photo of the Year

“it opens up discussions about technology, globalization, migration, poverty, desperation, alienation, humanity.” Huh? If they didn’t tell me it was of people in Djibouti, I’d have never guessed. Looks like people holding up cigarette lighters for a concert at the beach in L.A. or something. Or maybe getting ready to go midnight smelt fishing. If this is the best press photo of 2013, no wonder why newspapers are failing. Source Article from...

The Ultimate Guide to Going Pro as a Photographer A Post By: Omar Zenhom Going pro is scary. Let’s just say it. Now that we got that out of the way and we all agree that transitioning from being a hobbyist or a part-timer, into a full fledged professional photographer isn’t easy, let’s talk about how to do it. Let me start off by saying, YOU CAN DO THIS! It will be hard work but it’s NOT IMPOSSIBLE. Suspend disbelief for once in your life and let’s focus on how you can take the steps forward to going pro already! I know this is going to be hard to believe, but I will ACTUALLY tell you what you need to do, right now. This guide...

CP+ 2014: Nikon stand report

I picked up a D3300 a few days ago and the IQ is stellar. The new kit lens is very cool. Small and sharp. The D7200 is going to have to be very special, because as it stands the D3300, D5300, and D7100 stand neck and neck in regards to IQ. As it is the only thing the 7100 has going for it is the sturdier build and more buttons. For products shots in my studio I’ve been using a D5300. I don’t need a weather-sealed body nor a camera with a million dedicated buttons. Set it and forget it. Source Article from...

CP+ 2014: Fujifilm shows new 50mm teleconverter for X100S

In my opinion; – If you pay for a 1″ sensor P&S, thanks to its optics. it is WASTE OF MONEY (excluding Sony Superzoom)– If you pay for a 1″ sensor ILC cam, it is WASTE OF MORE MONEY.– If you pay for a APS-C sensor with stabile optics it is WASTE OF RESOURCES (that might exclude new canon G 1 X II, I don´t know yet!)– If you pay for a full frame sensor camera, and your model is a mirrorless one, with stabile optics or inter-changable lens you* are A FILTY RICH DUDE ! And damn !! It would be good to have smilar money and taste as you have. (*) You are...

CP+ 2014: Canon stand report

apple to apple; sensor size to sensor size, zoom lens to zoom lens, body size to body size, price to price. a single lens of 24-120/f2.0-3.9 on 1.5inch sensor at this size, as long as the G1XmkII delivers the standard Canon G series performance, i will be glad someone could suggest me an equivalent combination from m43 or other systems. I agree it is not most excited but definitely a very practical one. btw, i shot m43, pentax, sony, sigma, canon, and a few compacts. i am no fanboy but i really appreciated a compact zoom with all the spec like G1XmkII or better. Shaking up the market? Sony a7R review posted

Yes, but as a camera, a working camera, it do it’s job with it’s IQ limitations. And that’s I ask for, not perfect images, but to be able to shoot the moment. That’s why I extensively use pocket cameras, always with me, on pocket or my messenger bags. If you look at photography master of 50’s, 60’s, 70’s , technical quality is laughable compared to what you could get out of a pocket camera today with raw files. That’s not the technical perfection that matter, it’s the instant. ADDED: maybe in this case, Sony A7R is perfect for landscape...

LG launches LG G Pro 2 phablet with 4k video

Because of physics… But there’s a lot of P&S with fast lenses, from your S110 to LX7… Or larger sensor compacts like the RX100, the new G1X MkII (which has one of the more impressive P&S lens in a while, at least on paper), etc. f0.95 on a 1″+ sensor wouldn’t be compact anymore (or have much of a zoom factor). Advanced P&S still have lenses way more advanced than any phone. It’s the budget/bottom of the barrel P&S that get worse all the time, but then, cameras on non-flagship phones aren’t much to write about either. I do think three...

Why Lazy Photographers Should Use Lightroom Smart Collections

Why Lazy Photographers Should Use Lightroom Smart Collections A Post By: Don Komarechka I never bother to keyword or tag my images. I often neglect putting my photos into organized collections. It takes too much time away from my workflow to bother with any of that – so how the heck do I find any of my images? Lightroom Smart Collections It’s easy to keep track of your images without painstakingly organizing them shot-by-shot. Lightroom Smart Collections allow you to filter and organize your images based on metadata contained within the images. Often times this metadata can be unique enough to sort your images based on subject, location, and genre....

Room with a View: How to Create this Window with Blinds Portrait Anywhere

Room with a View: How to Create this Window with Blinds Portrait Anywhere A Post By: Gina Milicia In this post Gina Milicia – author of our brand new Posing eBook – walks us through the taking of one of her portraits of Christy Vandenberg. I’m constantly on the look out for new and interesting ways to pose my models. This shoot only took me 20 minutes from start to finish and is really basic to set up and photograph. The following tutorial is a step by step of how I pose and light my window portrait. This set up is great way to add mood to a portrait. The reflections caused by the glass that partly obscure my model add a sense of mystery and romance to the...

The lens will be available by March 2014 and cost $899. There is also a pre-order offer for followers of...

CP+ 2014: Hands-on with Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II

They employed a designer for the first G1 X. He stated: “I was aiming for a simple, “professional’s tool” with no waste, and bare functionality. Since the PowerShot G7, the controls had been getting more complex, and I wanted to organise them, so I went after simple looks with functional beauty. […] The concept I pursued was one of authenticity, I wanted a camera that a professional would be proud to have among their equipment.” It went down like a lead balloon. (Though some liked it. I thought it was the best-looking Canon in a long time.) With the G1 X Mark II, Canon went back...

Is Full Frame Still the Best?

Is Full Frame Still the Best? A Post By: Andrew S. Gibson The Nikon D800, a 36.3 megapixel full frame camera. For many years photographers have accepted that, when it comes to image quality, a full frame camera beats one with a smaller sensor every time. Let’s look at some of the reasons why. Advantages of full frame cameras Full frame camera sensors have larger pixels. This means they create images with less noise and all-round better image quality. Full frame cameras usually have more megapixels. While this doesn’t matter to most photographers, it may be useful if your client demands large images or you want to...

Do you pack up and leave after sunset and miss the fun of night photography? A Post By: John Davenport There’s no question that the best light occurs during the golden hours, but does that mean that you should pack up your cameras after sunset and miss all the fun of night photography? Absolutely not! Fun of Night Photography Night photography offers so many great opportunities for photographers that it’s something that shouldn’t be overlooked. In fact – I think it should be experienced by everyone. Of course photographing at night means that you’re going to be pushing your gear to its limits. High ISOs, long shutter speeds, fast lenses, tripods, remote...

A quick look at the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II

A quick look at the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II Rather uncharacteristically, Canon has given us very little access to its PowerShot G1 X II or information about it, but they did give us a chance to handle a prototype model back at CES. The camera itself won’t be available until April, so we’re hoping pre-production models will be shown at the CP+ show, starting on February 13th in Yokohama. We’ll bring you hands-on photos from the show if they are. However, it’s still possible to deduce some information about the camera, based on that experience and the information that has been made available. New...
