A Post By: Katie McEnaney Flare can be a polarizing topic in photography, and many articles have been written about how to prevent or eliminate lens flare. But there are many situations where you can use lens flare creatively to enhance your photographs. What is Lens Flare? Lens flare and sun flare are terms that are often confused in photography literature. Sun flare generally refers to turning the sun into a starburst shape, while lens flare is an artifact of stray light bouncing around the lens and being recorded by the sensor. This article will focus on lens flare, but you can read more...

When I realized I had written what seemed to be a course (i.e. not my usual article or book), I was left with a sense of panic. There are so many options for running an online course, and all of them seem slightly confusing or time-intensive to set up. Then I remembered the autoresponders feature in my newsletter application (I use MailChimp, although every newsletter software has it). I could trigger lessons with autoresponders and deliver...

A Post By: Natalie Denton (nee Johnson) Continued from Part One of your guide to outdoor photography. Once you’ve arrived at a good shooting spot it’s time to begin. Shooting mode As outdoor photography incorporates a wide selection of genres you’ll find Manual mode will offer you the most flexible and convenient grounds for setting and changing values on the go. But Manual mode isn’t for everyone, so if you’re not feeling confident enough yet, try using a semi-manual mode. Aperture Priority is great if you want to control the depth of field of your image, for example if you want...

Sigma has revealed the next generation of its DP series of APS-C sensor, fixed focal length cameras, with the dp2 Quattro. The latest, 45mm-equivalent, model features dramatic styling and a fundamental re-think of the company’s Foveon multi-layer sensor design. The Quattro sensor still uses three layers to detect color information but now only captures its full, 19.6 million pixel resolution in the top layer, with lower...

A Post By: Natalie Denton (nee Johnson) Outdoor photography encompasses a whole host of genres, like: landscapes, nature, macro, wildlife and even low-light, thus it can be the perfect opportunity to try new techniques and compositions that are outside your traditional comfort zone. So while you might have set off to capture some fascinating vistas, you might stumble upon a collection of unusual looking fungi and want to photograph that too, which is great as long as you’ve packed the right kit. The key here is preparation, because once you’re out in wild it can be a long trek home...

A Post By: Andrew S. Gibson I think it’s fair to say that most photographers buy a kit lens with their first camera. It’s a good place to start, as despite the limitations, a good one is versatile (an idea I explored in my article Why Your Kit Lens is Better Than You Think). But, however well a kit lens performs in the right hands, at some point you will ask yourself what lens you want to buy next. Or, you might already own more than one lens and be wondering if a new one may improve your photography. I am going to help you answer these questions by outlining some of the things you need...

Like. Super like. Very refreshing to read about photographers and see great pictures with no one laying their foot about noise or exposure or unsharp corners, maybe because there’s none, or maybe because one is just carried away by the emotion of the moment, or just maybe blown away. It didn’t even bother me that he was using Canon, not Nikon or Fuji. Yeah, Fred Miranda proved a long time ago that Canon can also do the job. Just goes to show one can find the heart of the image in any good, and well thought out picture. Source Article from...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt Earlier today I shared an image collection of The Essence of Masculinity – Portraits of Men. Now, of course, it’s your turn! First – go look at the image collection if you haven’t already done so. I tried to choose portraits that jumped out at me on Flickr for one reason or another. Usually it was lighting or an expression that caught my eye. But there two  things that I think all of these images have in common is connection to the subject, and storytelling. There is a story in each one of these images and men. What stories do you see? What stories do...

Connect smartphone reviews are written with the needs of photographers in mind. We focus on camera features, performance and image quality. When Samsung launched the 5.3-inch Galaxy Note at IFA 2011, the phablet, as devices with screens larger than 5 inches are now commonly called, was born. Initially there was doubt as to whether these oversized smartphones would catch on with consumers but in 2014 it’s fair to say that phablets are here to stay. With the 5.5-inch Note 3 Samsung is marketing the third generation of its Galaxy phablet. Sony is competing with the 6.4-inch Sony...

OK, ok, it’s a ripoff. Now please tell me what established microstock site gives a better deal. iStockPhoto pays 15% (45% if Exclusive, which is something you most probably wouldn’t want), Shutterstock pays 20% to 30% (if you happened to earn $10+ with them already), and so on and so forth. Pretty please no emotions etc., it’s just a question. And I would really appreciate if it’s answered. Source Article from...

If you’re a graphic designer, you will often have to work with off-the-shelf material created by others — for instance, combining ready-to-use fonts with images from a photographer or stock website. Also, you’ll often have to follow the branding already developed by someone else. It’s OK; it’s a part of the job, and you shouldn’t be bothered by it. But the part of a project that almost every graphic designer likes and is...

To most Web developers, it sounds controversial until you hear the punchline: Last summer, the developers in charge of Google’s Chrome browser floated a proposal that went virtually unnoticed by the technology press, which was to remove support for an established W3C standard that every other browser vendor still supports. The standard in question? Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformations, otherwise known as XSLT. In...

A Post By: Garry Chung Turn the street into your studio by using street lights for portraits. Most people that I see taking photos after dark around the city have a flash mounted on the camera pointing at their subject. If shooting outdoors with nothing to bounce the flash off, the result usually is that rabbit out in front of headlights look, and flat lighting that rarely flatters your subject. As a professional wedding and portrait photographer, I will share with you my secrets of stealing available light when taking portraits around cities. No need for softboxes, beauty dishes, just put...

A Post By: Paul Burwell Black-capped Chickadee on a snowy branch While a lot of photographers find that winter is an excellent time to hibernate, there are really no good excuses for staying indoors and avoiding winter.  But, you do need to take steps to protect your equipment.  Here’s a few ideas to keep things safe. WINTER PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS One of the biggest problems for cameras in cold weather is condensation.  Condensation occurs when you bring a camera from the dry cold temperatures outdoors, to the warm and relatively moist conditions in your vehicle or home. When that warm moist...

Please note that the camera pictured in this article is a pre-production model that is not 100% cosmetically final (for example, it is missing the ‘GH4’ stencil on the front plate). From a hardware point of view, the GH4 looks a lot like the GH3 – and they’re similar enough in footprint that the forthcoming model can still use the same external battery grip as the GH3. Some of the fine detail has been changed, with the inclusion of a 1024×768 (2360k dot) OLED viewfinder panel and a shutter that’s capable of operating at 1/8000th of a second and rated...

By Ishan Anand

To most Web developers, it sounds controversial until you hear the punchline: Last summer, the developers in charge of Google’s Chrome browser floated a proposal that went virtually unnoticed by the technology press, which was to remove support for an established W3C standard that every other browser vendor still supports. The standard in question? Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformations, otherwise known as XSLT. In...

A Post By: Craig Colvin Create Powerful Silhouettes by Telling a Story Telling the Story Silhouettes remove all the distractions and clutter in the scene and distill the image down to its most basic, this is why the story is so important. Just using shapes you must make a photo that is recognizable, and that the viewer can relate to. While this sounds easy in practice, it can be difficult to achieve. You must have the right elements. The light needs to be in the right location, the subject needs to be facing the right way, and they need to be in a pose that makes their action recognizable....

Ricoh has announced the WG-20, a rugged compact that’s waterproof to 10 meters/33 feet, freezeproof to -10C/+14F and able to survive a 1.5m/5ft drop. Bearing a 14 megapixel CCD sensor, it provides a 28-140mm 5x optical zoom lens and 720p HD movie recording. It’s a continuation of Pentax’s WG-line minus the ‘Pentax’ logo, presumably a WG-10 replacement though the cameras appear to share the same...

The Ricoh WG-4 and WG-4 GPS update the previously Pentax-branded rugged WG-series as step-up models featuring a 16MP BSI-CMOS sensor, 25-100mm equivalent F2-4.9 lens and sensor-shift image stabilization. The two models are identical with the exception of the WG-4 GPS’ built-in location tagging capability and front-facing display. A Post By: Darren Rowse Last week we launched a brand new dPS eBook – Portraits: Striking the Pose – an eBook to help you take natural looking portraits that bring out the true character in your subjects. When we launched this eBook we suspected it would do well as it’s a popular topic and written by one of our much loved authors – Gina Milicia – who really knows her stuff. However we had no idea just how popular it would be. In the first two days of it’s launch we saw more people grab a copy than we usually do in the first two weeks of a launch. These are the quickest and easiest techniques for improving your photography. Top five shortcuts for better photos 1. Switch to aperture priority The main dial on top of your camera will have an option called ‘Av’ or ‘A’, depending on the make of your camera. It’s known as ‘aperture priority’. What you want is what Canon offers with their RAW files: RAW (full size RAW), mRAW (medium size RAW), and sRAW (small size RAW). On Canon’s 18mp sensors, that equates to 10.1mp for mRAW, and 4.5mp for sRAW. Since Canon introduced this feature, I’ve found it to be tremendously useful. I shoot weddings, and with the huge volume of images that we shoot, larger file sizes quickly add up. I’ve always found that 10mp is plenty for most wedding images, so I shoot most of the wedding at mRAW. I only switch to full resolution RAW for the portrait and large group shots. I love being...

A Post By: Anne McKinnell If you’re serious about landscape photography, it won’t take you very long to realize the fundamental problem of the craft: not every landscape that catches your eye will easily translate into a compelling photograph. When we experience a place, the smells, sounds, the warmth or chill in the air, and our own emotions combine to give us an overall impression. Our job as photographers is translate that overall impression into a photograph. Every landscape photo needs to be carefully crafted with the final image in mind. Outwardly, they look a lot like a schoolbag I had in the early nineties 😉 I’m sure these are well made and perfectly good if you’re after such a bag. Personally though, when I go into rugged terrain, I take my Lowepro Rover Pro 45L AW, which is half photo backpack – half trecking backpack, together with a holster type bag. This setup is much more practical I find than carrying a bag like the ones above (too annoying for serious hiking) + a normal backpack, or just a dedicated photography backpack (no room for trecking material). For instance: -urban landscapes at noon / at night-green landscapes-outdoor / studio portait-bar scene-dance club (low light / movement)-museum (low light)-fast sport Then, some of the situations would just not work, but then you can say that “ok, after a half hour of trying to take pictures in the dance hall, out of 30 shots, this is the best we could got out from RX10” etc. On another note, a personal note added to the samples, would also be helpful, because the intent behind a...

Responsive images have been, and are, one of the hardest problems in responsive Web design right now. Until browser vendors give us a native solution, we have to think on the fly and come up with our own solutions. “Retina†images are especially a challenge because if you have sized your layout with ems or percentages (as you should!), then you cannot be sure of the exact pixel dimensions of each image being displayed. A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt In keeping with our portrait theme this week is a video that goes over some great ideas for making one light portraits, using some advanced set ups. Keep in mind this is great if you only have on light and don’t want to invest in a more. The reflectors he’s using can be purchased relatively inexpensively, as can the mirrors. Probably the thing you’ll need to do this type of technique is more light stands and some clamps. Just ignore the plug for the light crane or light boom at the end of the video. That is more applicable if you are doing video with your...

A Post By: John Davenport One of the most powerful new tools in Lightroom 5 is the Radial Filter tool. Here are a few examples of how you can use this tool creatively inside your workflow to help draw attention to your subjects. If you don’t have Lightroom5, you can use multiple graduated filters to draw attention, but it’s not as easy, and the results can be hit or miss. #1 – Off-center vignetting (beginner tip) Let’s face it, Lightroom’s post-crop vignette leaves a lot to be desired, especially if you want your vignetting effect to be applied a bit off-center, allowing you to...

A Post By: Jim Goldstein The beauty of portrait photography is that it is as diverse as its subjects and often takes its cues from traditional paintings. One photographer who has found such inspiration is Alex Huff who is today’s guest on “3 Minutes with…†. Describe your photography in 100 words or less My photography style strives to depict simple beauty with some influence from Dutch Golden Age paintings. The purpose of this particular collection is to showcase individual tattoos in the same frame as the objects and subjects they are designed after. This has allowed my models to...

To some food professionals, smartphone food photography is an epidemic. For chef April Bloomfield (@aprilbloomfield), it’s a new medium to share her passion. Bloomfield is the chef at The Spotted Pig, The Breslin, and The John Dory Oyster Bar in New York City. With Instagram, she uses her iPhone 5 to share a look inside her kitchen. Her photos are sometimes abstract, sometimes appetizing, and almost always edible. She is showing the soft delicious underbelly of the NYC food scene, and her over 41,000 followers are eating it up. Connect: How would you describe your photographic...

The most promising change is the shutter priority mode, because that is essentially a feature addition — something that Sony is… well, not famous for doing via firmware updates. Hope this breaks the ice and Sony follow up with RX100Mk2 firmware update that really fixes few annoying things in it. Like, say, horrible implementation of zooming with front wheel: first slight rotation enters “zoom mode” and only second actually changes the zoom (imagine you turn steering wheel and your car enters “turn mode” first w/o actually turning…). It would be nice...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt This week as part of our Portrait Deep Dive we’re going to look at portraits of ladies. So let’s start with one of the most famous, the Mona Lisa. Darren wrote – What the Mona Lisa can teach us about taking great portraits Painted almost 600 years ago she’s still as lovely today as she was then. Why does this painting work so well? What about it is so intriguing? Is it the lighting, or her sly smile? I like to think it’s because she’s an elegant woman of her time. Old, young, trendy, casual, sporty, elegant, contemptuous, spirited, or shy; today we...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt This week and next we are featuring a series of articles on portraits. Earlier today I shared some portraits of women for you to enjoy and get inspired by. So you can probably guess what the weekly photography challenge is, right? You got it – portrait of a lady! By Ryan Seyeau Surely there’s a lovely lady in your life that deserves a great portrait of herself. Now’s the time to create one of her, maybe as a gift. Or perhaps if you are a lady, a self portrait is in order. Use natural light or flash, whatever you prefer and are most comfortable using....

“….at around $999 / £900, it costs several times as much as the 50mm F1.4 options for DSLR systems. So what exactly are you paying for?” Oh, that is an easy enough question to answer, yes indeed. Let us see now… okay, so the lens will go for USD 999 buckaroos, correct? Okay, so first you pay the “name surcharge” associated with the Sony name: $300. Next, you pay the “name surcharge” associated with the Zeiss name: yeap, that will be yet another $300, good people. What you have got left — $399 – is all that this lens is really worth...

Anthony Burrill is one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary graphic design, known for his thought-provoking posters, printed traditionally in letterpress. He has never worked for another design firm, and his first studio was at home — at his kitchen table. Upon graduating in 1991, he has worked independently in loose collaboration with friends, designers, artists and a number of...

The Mystery Is Resolved: The Rain That Never Stops, Cakes and Frightened Cats By Vitaly Friedman January 30th, 2014 13 Comments Everybody loves a good riddle, but when you design one, you never know how it will be perceived until you try it out. The new Smashing Mystery Riddle didn’t emerge over night, and after weeks of fine adjustments and many — many — test runs, we prepared some coffee, pressed that shiny “Publish†button and, you know, started waiting for tweets. And now, exactly two days later, it’s time to reveal the mystery and announce the winners. Oh, you want to figure...

A Post By: Jim Wise Have you ever been so close to a subject that you just couldn’t get it all into the frame? You could use a fisheye lens but they creates so much distortion that it doesn’t always work the way you want it to. You can actually get the photo that you want with the lens that you already have! You can accomplish this by taking multiple images over several columns and several rows, and combining them into one very large, extremely detailed image. With a little practice and some information any photo is possible with the gear that you have in your camera bag. Combining...

A Post By: Lynsey Peterson Whenever I see “How I Got The Shot†articles, they are typically landscape or nature shots, or difficult lighting situations.  Rarely do you see a detailed account of the taking of a portrait image.  Maybe because for portrait shots, it’s often more about the connection between subject and photographer than the technicals, or maybe because it seems fairly straightforward.  That said, when I was first starting out in portrait photography, I spent many hours drooling over beautiful images I admired and wondering how they had been taken, and more importantly,...

greypixelz: “he and others like him, did NOTHING to help those people in need, just like the media is a propaganda machine for corporations looking for your sympathy and reaching for your wallets and ending up taking your souls.” You need to get a bit of perspective and equating what he did to corporate avarice and a society dominated by a plutocracy today ignores many things not least the time in history he operated and the effect his and other photos had on shaping attitudes to things like the Vietnam war. You and I know there is plenty of suffering in the world. We still spend...

If true, that would be an awesome move by Nikon and certainly -finally- showing genuine commitment to their customers. At the very least it would give some substance to the term. In fact this might, to some extent, serve as some remediation to the damaged image (no pun intended) that Nikon lately had inflicted on itself by its own actions and inactions. Although the dust and debris problems with the D600 were, according to many researchers, grossly blown out of proportions -the “internet amplification effect”- Nikon’s clumsy (non)response to it was even more damaging. As...

This is the story of my year of photographic lessons – maybe you can relate, or are on a similar journey. A Post By: Andrew S. Gibson A question we often get asked at Digital Photography School is which lenses are best for portraits. It’s a tricky question because the answer is subjective. It depends on your budget, personal style of photography and the make of camera. It is further complicated by the relationship between sensor size and focal length. Let’s start by exploring some of the things you need to think about when choosing the perfect portrait lens. 1. What about the lenses you already own? It may be that you already own a lens that you haven’t thought of using to take portraits,...

Zeiss has announced an addition to its Touit family of lenses, in the shape of a 50mm F2.8 Macro. The Touit 2.8/50M is designed for mirrorless cameras with APS-C sensors, and will come in Sony E and Fujifilm X mounts; with an aperture ring on the latter. With an angle of view equivalent to 75mm on full frame, it offers 1:1 magnification for close-up shooting.  Like the other Touit lenses it includes autofocus, but no image...

The number of different types of screws is a pretty good indication of how many independently-designed subsystems are being stuck together. Despite the A7/A7R seeming like they were pushed out the door a bit quickly, it is impressive to see that Sony coordinated the design, engineering, and manufacturing processes so tightly. It is worth noting, however, that Cicala’s conclusion that the A7R is cheaper to make than a DSLR is probably only half right. It looks like Sony invested the money up-front on design and engineering of new subsystems so production cost is low, whereas most DSLRs...
