A Post By: Rachel Brenke Starting a photography business is extremely easy with the accessibility and affordability of digital cameras and processing programs. Often the lure of entrepreneurship, with these low barriers to entry, leads to many photography business owners of all business experiences. Experience levels range from lack of business competence, to the need for growth in photography skills to a mixture of skills with varying weaknesses and strengths. Before entering into business it is important to evaluate whether you are technically proficient, ready to deal with business...

A Post By: Ben Evans Would you like to make portraits that show more about the person’s character than what they look like? In this article, you’ll learn some new ways to look at your subjects so you can better understand them; and therefore create portraits with depth and more interest. A portrait is a picture of a person. So, what separates the pictures we make from those made by a photo-booth? Leaving discussions about mind-body duality aside, it’s safe to say that we’re all flesh and blood. Our photographs, therefore, are of surface appearances. But beauty is more than skin deep....

I have not heard anyone suggest the E-M5 would be dropped, except now. No, the E-M5 won’t be dropped, being the mainstream product that most of us will buy, not too basic and not too specialised (and expensive) like the E-M1. It is the OMD model that Olympus relies on for volume sales, the bread and butter model. What I think is that the E-M5 replacement will have some features that are not even in the E-M1, e.g. a new sensor with better IQ. The E-M1 will still be the camera that has PDAF and the ability to use 43 lenses, which it can do better with its bigger size and weight. It will...

Olympus unveils the OM-D E-M10, a smaller and budget-friendlier Micro Four Thirds ‘Digital OM’ with many parts borrowed from the E-M5 – starting with its 16 megapixel sensor. It also manages to snag a few features from the flagship E-M1, including its TruePic VII processor and built-in Wi-Fi for image transfer and remote control. It falls short of its siblings with ‘3-axis’ image stabilization...

“14-42mm lens is $349 / £299 / €399.” Very nice but overpriced – but for $100 in kit with E-M10 (and I am sure with future cams) just perfect. ” The 25mm F1.8 will sell for $399 / £369 / €399.” Overpriced, I can buy a new Pana 24/1.4, 2/3EV faster, for $500. Should have been $200, like Nikon 35/1.8 DX. Source Article from...

Olympus has introduced the Stylus SP-100 superzoom, a camera with a built-in dot-sight that enables you to easily track moving subjects while the lens is zoomed in. The dot-sight pops up just above the high-resolution electronic viewfinder. To make long zoom focusing easier, the SP-100 also features a focus limiter, which lets the user choose what distances the camera searches. The SP-100 combines a 16MP BSI CMOS sensor with a...

One of the ways we can continue learning is by attending professional Web conferences. But with so many seemingly excellent events to choose from, how do you decide which is right for you? A Post By: Ben Schreck Urban Exploration Photography Dark halls, narrow wet cold rooms, rusted metal, chains hanging from the ceiling – it`s like you`re moving through a horror movie setting. It appears to be a pictorial journey through a strange world – a nightmarish world of shadows and darkness as after an asteroid impact. Lost places, abandoned buildings and infrastructure are my favourite locations to take pictures. “Urban Exploration†also known as “Urbex†is the exploring of urban, (mostly) abandoned structures. In this article I will tell you how I became an urban...

A Post By: James Maher One of the most rewarding aspects of photography is that you can use the camera to connect with complete strangers, especially when you travel. Unless you are heading to the wilderness, the scenery alone is only a part of any trip.  The people and culture you encounter is the other part.  A travel album feels much more complete when you include images of both scenery and people.  Or even better, images that combine the scenery and the locals. Maybe it’s a portrait of a seller at a local market, or an interesting person that you pass while walking down the street,...

Iti’ll be tough choice between Sony A7(R) and Fuji XT1 for me. A7:+ FF– Operation & Ergonomics; Lens choice and quality. XT1:+ Design and operation– not FF hmmmm…… the IQ should be on par between the two. I use D800 (same sensor as A7R) for work and own X100S (same sensor as XT1) Both of them can produce image that turns into amazing prints. The dynamic range and low light capability is definitely on par (kudos to Fuji, fighting FF with APS). I have not used A7, but from the reviews, the IQ is sufficient for me. Sony’s logic is always bizarre. I used...

Following its cloaked appearance in a teaser ad last week (and then a comprehensive leak), the Fujifilm X-T1 makes its official debut. It’s a weather-resistant, SLR-styled mirrorless camera bearing Fuji’s 16MP X-Trans CMOS II sensor, borrowed from its X-E2 sibling. Its built-in 2.36M dot EVF is similar to that of the XE-2, though it boasts a higher 0.77x equivalent magnification and claimed lag time of 0.005 seconds....

but man only changes his tools, not his brain. We still believe in the same crap, like GOD and similar bullsh.., we kill for the same reasons, we hate for the same differences to ourselves. On the end, the more we change the more we stay the same, all we do as a change, is go faster. We displace 20 times faster than once, we learn in one life what ancients needed 10 lifes for, we get the information in one day that asked you 10 days before, we kill in one push of a button the people we killed in 10 wars in ancient times, messages are instantly, need no 20 days anymore to be carried, and so...

What is user experience design exactly? Should you not start it unless you are fully dedicated, or should you embrace it in the process as soon as possible? Are all designers also user experience designers, or is it a separate expertise? The debate is as old as the discipline itself, and while picking up a bucket of popcorn, sitting back and watching the drama is sometimes fun, let’s try to figure out which user...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt A few weeks ago I started a new poll on what post-production software you use most often. If you want to add your vote you still can here. We have run this poll twice in the past, every two years, so it will be interesting to see if the results have changed at all from 2009, to 2011 to 2013. Let’s look at the current results first. Results – what post-processing software is used most often in December 2013 With over 27,000 votes at the time of this summary the overwhelming winner was Lightroom with a whopping 42% share. Now let’s see how these numbers...

If you are not familiar with some of the masters I will be featuring one now and then to help you become acquainted with some of the best in history. Today we’re going to look at a man that was considered to be the world’s premiere portrait photographer...

A Post By: Jeff Guyer Portrait Plus from ArcSoft packs powerful facial retouching tools into a user-friendly program One of the most difficult tasks in Photoshop is also one of the most common. Since we are in the business of making people look good, solid portrait retouching skills are perhaps some of the most important tools in your digital bag of tricks. A couple of months ago, I wrote an article detailing one of my favorite techniques for basic skin smoothing in Photoshop. It’s a pretty straightforward approach to smoothing skin and removing blemishes and I use it all the time. As...

A Post By: Andrew S. Gibson Now that Canon has two semi-professional full-frame cameras, the EOS 5D Mark III and EOS 6D, naturally photographers wonder which is the best model for them. As a former Technical Editor of EOS Magazine (the best magazine Canon owners could possible buy) I would like to share my insights. But first, if you’re in the market for a full-frame EOS camera, let’s not forget the top of the range EOS 1D-X. This is a high-end, professional camera with a price tag to match. It’s big and heavy and built for the demands of a professional photographer’s life. Most...

As I Russian, I could say, that it doesn’t like “family farm” (almost non-existing reality in modern Russia), but more like “summer cottage,” or, maybe, “all-year-around cottage”, but not “farm” in true sense that they produce some agriculture, grow any food or animals for sell and things like this. Also, here are photos of good hunting dogs on others pictures at Flickr, and it is strong sign of very high income here, that it completely incompatible with “Farm” in true meaning of this word in Russia. Pictures are great, and it...

When the Nokia Lumia 1520 was launched in October 2013 it took the honor of being first smartphone to offer Raw image capture. Now the same feature was recently added to the older model Lumia 1020 via the Nokia “Black” firmware update. With an unusually large (for a smartphone) 1/1.5-inch image sensor, the Nokia Lumia 1020’s image quality was already among the very best when only looking at JPEG capabilities. It’s number five in DxOMark’s all-time mobile rating with 74 points and it scored very well in our review on Dpreview Connect as well. With the...

I find that many beginners haven’t yet ventured out into the dark of night and I love introducing them to the wonders of night photography, and showing them the possibilities. Ricoh is by far the best producer when it comes to long-term support of their products in terms of firmware updates. Fuji are doing quite nice lately in this respect, as well, but you can always count on a serious Ricoh camera to get updates for years after launch.@Rmano – Pentax cameras are cheaper than Sony or Canikon on the same feature set, usually :). So good luck with that! Source Article from...

Phase One has announced the ‘world’s first CMOS-based digital camera back’ – the 50MP IQ250. It uses a 44x33mm sensor, which is 68% larger in area than 35mm full frame, and equates to a 1.3x crop of the standard 645 format. Until now medium format backs have invariably used CCD sensors, and the adoption of CMOS promises much improved image quality when shooting at high ISOs in particular. A Post By: Jeff Guyer The SpiderPro Holster provides a secure, durable camera-carrying system that takes away the strain caused by traditional camera straps. Many moons ago, someone had the idea to attach a strap to two points on a camera and hang it around their neck. While it may have seemed like a good idea at the time, it’s tough denying that traditional camera straps pose certain problems. Personally, I just don’t like that weight hanging around my neck for several hours at a time, especially if I’m using a longer lens like the 70-200mm. Getting the camera off my neck and over my...

A Post By: Kav Dadfar To make a great photograph you need to be extremely lucky or more likely, you need to be prepared to work for it. The amazing photos you see in books and magazines very rarely happen by accident. In most cases the photographer has spent time researching and preparing, and then been incredibly patient, brave or determined in order to attain that one image. War photographers regularly risk their lives for a great picture. Wildlife photographers spend months, and sometimes years, learning and tracking animals, waiting for that perfect moment. Landscape photographers hike...

By far the best Photoshop tip I can give is to buy Lightroom. It will save you many, many hours. When I used to do wedding photography, Lightroom was a joy to use, with many hundreds of shots cropped, shadows lifted, etc. in an hour or two. In Photoshop, that used to take me many hours. I got some of my life back! Of course there is one key factor. Concentrate on getting composition, exposure, etc. right before you click the shutter! That is something that a great many people forget to do. Then it costs them hours in Photoshop correcting things, because they should have been standing...

Different layouts with red, green, blue, white, cyan, magenta, yellow, emerald, etc anyone can draw and claim advantages with. I could do a dozen such patterns now on the spot. What is more interesting with the Fuji pattern is how they plan to use micro lenses. It is not obvious. Source Article from...

The element that was cloned out was an important piece of information. It was telling the viewer that there were more than one reporter at that precise location. That brings insight and questions about the “PR” logistics around the photographed incident : how did the reporters get there? Who brought them there? Why? Did the gun carrying person in the picture know he was moving in front of reporters? Did he place himself in that way at that location because he knew the press was there? By cloning out the camera, the photographer wanted to avoid such questions being raised by the...

If any of us were living in that time, some of the now old lenses would look as goog as some of today’s ones do. We tend to think we didn’t do our best in the past, but look, makers were impressing people the same way they’re doing now! I’m not against or don’t like smaller sensor cams, I only think that 15 years are a quite good time to make FF cams more popular. I wonder if Sony hasn’t been launching many and varied FF cams. Imagine if we still continued depending only on Canon and Nikon? I still wonder why 20 years ago there were FFs for everybody...

Understanding JavaScript’s Function.prototype.bind

Function binding is most probably your least concern when beginning with JavaScript, but when you realize that you need a solution to the problem of how to keep the context of this within another function, then you might not realize that what you actually need is Function.prototype.bind(). The first time you hit upon the problem, you might be inclined to set this to a variable that you can reference when you change context....

A Post By: Neil Creek I do a lot of cosplay (short for costume play) photography with friends, and I was asked by some to do a cosplay crossover photo shot (Shingeki no Kyojin / Psycho Pass) with them. They sent me some reference shots from which I decided to create a slightly futuristic, detective movie kind of look. I also thought I’d experiment with shooting to fit a wide movie crop to suit the look of the shoot. In this article I’ll show you how I set up, shot and processed two photos from the shoot, including the one above. If you’d like to see more photos from the shoot, you can...

A Post By: Anne McKinnell A tripod is my most valuable photo accessory. In fact, I view it as an essential item, and not an accessory. But sometimes using one is just not practical. Sometimes you get caught without it unexpectedly, and sometimes they even break. It’s good to know what to do in these situations so you don’t miss any photo opportunities. While shooting in the Valley of Fire, Nevada, I broke my tripod. Of course, there was a spectacular sunset that night. I was able to make this photo by increasing my ISO to 2000 and using a wide aperture of f/5.0 (the widest aperture for...

I just wonder how many who are posting here actually own the camera and therefore have first hand experience of it, or are they merely repeating what they’ve read and in doing so have formed their own, unsubstantiated opinion? For the record I own it and whilst it is not perfect, which camera is, its blend of features and performance make it a solid performer. No issues with its jpegs, but its RAW is superior. Pixel peeping is helpful only in looking at how a camera performs at the extreme, and seeing how another camera performs under the same shooting conditions, but it otherwise has...

I was wondering the same. Sigma and Nikon seem locked in an arms war, with Nikon’s camera firmware updates crippling Sigma lenses’ AF, and Sigma’s lens firmware updates undoing the sabotage. See here if this is news to you:http://www.dpreview.com/news/2013/11/19/sigma-issues-advisory-on-lens-compatibility-with-nikon-d5300 The Nikon updates have also blocked use of 3rd-party batteries. Pure hostility toward the end user. I respect Nikon’s heritage and technical prowess, but their recent contempt for their own paying customers is despicable. Source Article from...

Ethan Tweedie just sent me a link to a blog post by one of his clients, Karen Ferrara that describes why she uses professional real estate photography. As an example she uses a recent listing, that Ethan shot for her, in Waimea priced at $2.1M that sold in 17 days. Karen’s argument goes like this- “A REALTOR® with insistence on quality will be willing to make the investment in you (the home seller) and your valuable asset by having your home professionally photographed for listing and sale“: Buyers Find You. You’re not alone – I get countless requests from people to help them optimize their photo processing workflow. However, because it is so commonly asked, it is also frequently answered and this makes it difficult to add a fresh spin on a topic that hasn’t changed much over the years. One of the great things about dPS is the diverse nature of its writers and how we each have our own point of view, own skill set, and own way of explaining a topic. This post won’t be a groundbreaking reveal of some hidden secrets...

While Part 1 centered primarily on basketball, here in Part 2 we’ll take a quick look at some of the other indoor sports you might find yourself shooting. I see the article named “…. with A7 / A7R. The two cameras have a totally different approach on how lenses, new and old ones draw. So, where are the A7 pictures in your report? A7R works better on low angles, from 35 mm up, and this has been tested by Steve Huff. The opposite is true when it comes to use wider angles, here the A7 draws much better. Now, this is confusing, since one would prefer and select a higher pixel count for landscape and wider angles. The sales of the 36 mpix A7R compared to 24 mpix A7, show clearly that pixel peeping is still an asset when selling cameras....

Engadget notes that the high-end device known as the Sony Xperia D6503 (codename ‘Sirius’) will reportedly carry many of the same camera features that the current flagship Xperia Z1 offers like manual exposure control. Along with 4K video the handset is rumored to add some new features like ‘Timeshift video,’ a high frame rate movie mode with the option to apply slow motion effects. Xperia Blog has all of...

DPR has an irrational dislike of EOS M — couldn’t even bring themselves to complete their review, somehow this grip is news but not the EOS M grip. EOS M has 1,182,274 photos on flickr and 176 active users. The GM1? Doesn’t even show up in stats yet. http://www.flickr.com/cameras/ Source Article from http://www.dpreview.com/news/2014/01/21/richard-franiec-creates-custom-grip-for-panasonic-gm1

A Post By: James Maher 1/80th at f/2.8, ISO 1600 Much is spoken about photographing during the twilight hour, but what about after that? Night is my favorite time for street photography. Cityscapes are lit with a myriad of interesting and colorful light sources, such as lampposts, neon signs, store windows, car lights, and bare bulbs. People dress in their favorite outfits to go out. Bland scenes by day can suddenly turn ominous and fascinating at night. Here are 10 tips for night photography to get you thinking about starting your next street photography session at twilight, rather than...

A Post By: Katie McEnaney Photographers often fall into the bad habit of shooting everything we see from eye-level. We are walking around, something catches our eye, and we take a picture right from where we are standing. If you want to make an immediate impact in your photography, you need to get out of your eye-level (or tripod-level) rut. You need a change in perspective. Sure, you can change your composition by zooming in or out with your lens, but if you want to change your perspective, you are going to need to move. Don’t let your feet, or your tripod, root you to the spot: get ready...

Some photographers are so driven, so passionate, and so adventurous they can inspire people around the world. Alex Washburn is one of them. And I should know, I went to school with her. A year ago, she was working as a photographer for WIRED.com when she told me about this crazy idea she had about getting on a motorcycle and riding from San Francisco to the tip of South America. The craziest part about this idea? She decided to do it. In October, she and her boyfriend Nathaniel left their jobs, put their stuff in storage and sent their cat to live with Alex’s mom. Then, they...

Dealing With Workaholism On Web Teams
By Yiannis Konstantakopoulos
January 20th, 2014
Community, Opinion Column, Web Design
8 Comments
Workaholism is often confused with hard work. Some people who work on the Web seem not only to disregard its dangers, but to actively promote it. They see it as a badge of honor—but is it really? On the contrary, it’s a serious issue that can damage Web teams. Before we get started, let’s make one thing clear: A “workaholic†is someone who is addicted to work, someone who is out of balance and out of...

A Post By: Shiv Verma Proper Exposure vs. How the Camera Exposes Exposure is a complex beast. Mastering it is of the utmost importance. Exposure and composition are the two most critical components towards making a great image. Exposure is based on three components: The ISO or sensitivity to light Aperture or the size of the opening that will let in light, and Shutter Speed which defines the duration the light will have to pass through the aperture Whether you shoot in Manual, Aperture Priority or Shutter Priority; there is no difference in how the meter evaluates the scene. Measuring the...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt A few weeks ago I started off a series I’m going to be doing on some of the Masters of Photography, the best in history, with a video about Henri Cartier-Brisson. This week we’re going to look at probably the most well known landscape photographer of all time, Ansel Adams (Feb. 20 1902 — Apr. 22, 1984). He started his career as a musician but transitioned into being a photographer where he could use his skills to portray his love of nature and the natural world. He was a master of technical skills, co-developed the Zone System and was a founding member...

Why is an SLR-styled camera without a mirror fake, whereas a rangefinder-styled camera without a rangefinder mechanism, is not? Even though the design of SLRs were dictated by the technology inside them, the design in and of itself is still valid, even without a mirror, to someone who likes how these cameras handle. The same goes for rangefinder-styled cameras, if you like how those cameras handle. Source Article from...

If you haven’t upgraded from Lightroom 4 yet this will be a little preview. I would personally highly recommend that you do upgrade to LR5 if you haven’t yet. A Post By: Jeff Guyer I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. There are two kinds of reviews. There are first impressions, “fresh-out-of-the-box†reviews, and there are those (usually more useful) that come later, after the reviewer has had a chance to really put the product through its paces. Considering that I’ve been using the Think Tank Pro Speed Belt and Modular Components for almost ten years, I’d say that this review falls squarely within the second category. The Think Tank Pro Speed Belt, combined with elements of the Modular Component System makes carrying and...

They dominate the current tablet market, but not mobile computing market. Microsoft tablets (SP2) can replace a regular laptop and even a decent desktop. They will run any Windows app, drive a high res display, and connect to high speed storage. There are also a lot of convertible laptops on the market that will double as a tablet. The direction of business computing is rapidly heading for this hybrid form factor (convertibles or tablets with keyboards). Sadly OSX has no touch screen support, so you are stuck with iOS. Mobile operating systems are only likely to survive when they offer...

ogl, without the help and the money from EU those counties would have ended up in a huge and bloody war with total anarchy and a real total collapse and even more poverty. Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Latvia, Estonia and other countries benefit A LOT from the richer countries of EU, even if they don’t want to admit. Anyway, EU is a FREE organization, based on total freedom to leave any time a member likes to, unlike the Soviet regime, which was based on a totalitarian, non-democratic dictatorship ruled by the Soviet Union and the puppets they had in the other countries, like Honecker in...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt Earlier today I shared a collection of images of cats. Cats in windows, cats in doors, cats doing what they do best – mostly lounging around! By Kazutaka Sawa Even if you aren’t a “cat†person this week I challenge you to get past that and go find some cats to photograph. An empty windowsill is just that – empty – without a cat sitting on the ledge. A doorway and stoop, missing something without a feline resident taking sentinel position. I find that many times when I am photographing doors and windows (two of my favourites, check the collection...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt By Franck Vervial Last week I came clean on my obsession with bicycles. My other two favourite things to photograph are doors and windows. What better than if they have a cat in them!? The French Cat I have two crazy cats that make me laugh every day. If you’re a cat or pet owner you’ll understand. Even if you don’t have a cat you have to admit, putting one in a window or on the windowsill sort of completes the image, right? Cats can be annoying, cute, or elegant. They have personality. Not everyone is a “cat person†but approach it from a...

Obvioiusly no coincidence that there isn’t a single Canikon product that could even win its own category. Of course it doesn’t help that Canikon has no idea how to do mirrorless, though it’s not long they ever had a ghost of a chance to win that category no matter what they did, considering the E-M1 and A7R, Source Article from...

3 years of usage = $297. The price of an iPad Mini 16GB? Twice the price of LightRoom for PC or Mac? To be able to use LightRoom on a very slow device (compared to actual PC or Mac), without much storage, with slow memory card interface (USB2, 1 picture per second typically), non-calibrated/non-calibrable screen, and with a limited gamut? Twice the price of LightRoom for PC or Mac, and a probably mediocre experience for many Pro Photographers: it’s dumb! Source Article from...

Ever since the original iPad was launched in 2010 tablets have been the image viewing and presentation device of choice for many photographers. They tend to be sleeker than laptops and on the road provide the additional advantage of smaller dimensions and lower weight. With the right editing apps installed, tablets can be a good alternative to fully-fledged laptops for those who prefer to travel light. However, until fairly recently tablets have not really been an option for those photographers who prefer to capture their images in Raw format. The development of Raw files offers you...
