Welcome to another interview in the “How I Work†series. These interviews reveal how leading thinkers and creators on the Web design, code and create. The goal is not to get into the nuances of their craft (that information exists elsewhere online), but rather to step back and learn a bit about their habits, philosophies and workflow for producing great work. This time, we’re...

A Post By: Jim Goldstein Lenstag is a recently-launched, free online service for iOS, Android, and the web that records the serial numbers of your lenses, cameras, flashes, laptops and anything else in a secure, private registry before they are stolen. If one or more of your items disappear, you can immediately flag the missing items as stolen which creates a public web page, quickly indexed by search engines. The serial number is then discoverable by a single Google search (example: ’75165 lenstag’) or by checking the Lenstag apps. Thanks to Lenstag’s growing relationships with the...

A Post By: Jeff Guyer Shooting indoor sports isn’t always easy, but you can get professional quality results by following a few tried and true tips. 1/180, f/4, 80mm, ISO 1250, flash. A few weeks ago, we asked our dPS Facebook followers what topics they’d like to see covered here on the blog, and a few of you were in search of tips for indoor sports photography. For purposes of this article, I’m going to concentrate heavily on high school basketball, because it brings all of the challenges of shooting indoor sports together; bad lighting, fast action, ornery coaches, inconsistent...

This update does not make any sense. WHO ON EARTH is going to use a 3D-printing option from inside Photoshop? If you are, like me, into 3D-printing, you are using 3D software for that, NOT a 2D photo-retouching application!! It sounds so sophisticated, “hey look- Photoshop can do 3D-printing too”! Yeah, prehistoric simple objects like a coke-can, that’s what we print all the time.. It shows that, again, Adobe makes pointless updates on a product that has been finished years ago, and now it’s milking it’s users money with their Cloud. Who wants to be part of...

A Post By: Eric Kim I am a huge proponent of negative learning, that you can learn more by taking on the opposite approach. Philosopher Nassim Taleb calls this “via negativaâ€. It is the idea that the best way to gain “happiness†in life isn’t chasing what makes us happy, but by vehemently avoiding what makes us unhappy (a long commute to work, a horrible micro-managing boss, poisonous and negative “friendsâ€, and an expensive house mortgage). I also believe strongly that one should never listen to “rules†of anything in life (especially street photography). However, below is...

A Post By: Sharath Prakash Reverse Lens Macro: How to Use It as a Great Learning Tool Yesterday one of my friends called me late and told me that he was going to buy a DSLR and asked me which one he should choose. As a friend, I knew that this was his first camera and he was in fact a complete stranger to the field of photography. I told him to buy a good compact camera in order to get used to the basic concepts of photography and to buy a DSLR only when he feels his equipment is limiting his creativity. On the other hand are the people how have already bought an SLR, but get confused and...

Creating Custom Shipping Methods In Magento
By Matthew Haworth
January 15th, 2014
Magento
0 Comments
In this tutorial, we will use Magento’s powerful shipping-method code abstraction to create a shipping carrier. We will create two shipping methods that provide a fixed shipping price, allow for free shipping promotions, define logic based on an item’s weight and, finally, make it all configurable in the admin panel. We will cover the following: Extend the abstract shipping class and implement the required methods. Make the shipping method...

A Post By: Gavin Hardcastle Ever wondered how professional photographers achieve such lush, vibrant colours and that magical “atmosphere†in their images? BAM – they use a polarizing filter or “polarizerâ€! I could never have achieved the shot above without a polarizer. Who would have thought that just one slice of wafer thin glass slapped on the front of your lens could transform your photographs from “meh†to “woah†with just a quick turn of the hand? You MUST Have a Polarizer! As a landscape photographer I won’t go anywhere without at least a couple of polarizers in my...

A Post By: Dan Waters We live in a new digital world of social media and computer games which makes it all too easy to keep the real world at arms-length. Do you ever find yourself thinking you want to do more, feel more and live more, but comfortable familiarity and lack of confidence holds you back? Think about why you love photography. For many of us it’s that we’re fascinated by the world we live in and want to share our vision of it. To create great photos you need to feel, but to feel more you may need to push yourself to do things that take you out of your comfort zone. How to...

This could have been just great, but why all these slides?! Every, every, scene include a slide upwards, downwards, or sideways?! It makes the ‘movie’ boring, mannered, and tiring! After a while I had had enough of slides and had to turn it off. OK, you invest in a powered slide, or make it yourself (at the most: a handful of stepper motors, some electronics, and a computer of some sort, some ball-bearings, extruded aluminium, steel bolts, nuts, washers, and so on) but why use it in every damn*d shot?! For instance: Not a single panorama in sight (in the first 3 minutes –...

Not as much of an advertorial read as the comments would have me believe, but not that critically thought out either… Seems like the number one purpose for your Air is shifting files around with little editing (at least on the scenarios discussed), in which case the MBA 11 would work just as well… Heck a Surface Pro or even an IPad might be more mobile for that purpose, without “having to find a flat purpose” or tucking card readers between display and keyboard as you described (why not just disable sleep on display close btw?). I’m not sure how easy it is to...

I’ve had plenty of gripped and non-gripped cameras. (X-Pro1, X100S, DSLRs, E-M1, etc)…and if I buy a non-gripped camera, I’d just assume keep it that way. If I have to add a grip, that means it should have had one in the first place. Seems so. I would have never put a grip on my X-Pro1 and I wouldn’t for my X100S either. But…if people want to screw things onto their camera, go for it 🙂 Or just buy a model with a grip and stop complaining about it 🙂 Source Article from...

The Web is awash in content. A recent Moz article reports that 92,000 new articles are posted online every day. Companies are spending billions on content marketing to enhance credibility, build brand awareness and, especially of late, improve SEO. Here is what Google has to say about content in its quality guidelines: Make pages primarily for users, not for search engines. Don’t deceive your users. Avoid tricks intended to improve search engine...

A Post By: Kevin Choi 5 Tips to Take Better Images in a Zoo Many photographers think that taking a great animal photo requires extreme patience, sitting and waiting for hours in the wild. Yes, this is how a great wildlife shot is captured. However, if you just want to get some practise, you can still capture great animal photos in a zoo. Taking pictures of animals in a zoo is easier than shooting in the wild. Yet, it is not too easy. Many people think that taking a picture in a zoo is not challenging, but I don’t agree. It is not as simple as you think to take a good picture in the zoo....

There were however requests for it in the comments section, so in this article we will cover three ways of balancing color for flash and ambient light (tungsten yellow/orange which is approximately 3200°K, flash which has a color temperature close to daylight or 5500°K). Color Temperature Explained Before you go into the process of correcting color imbalance you will need to understand color...

No, I don’t like this concept either. Because I don’t do um, ‘photography’ with a smartphone. However people seem to in fact DO um, ‘photography’ with a smartphone and can’t imagine doing it any other way. This is for those people who just want to take photos in the usual smartphone style but with some extra stuff like zoom. In a recent interview with Sony’s execs, they said their QX sell like hotcakes. And honestly I’d rather have people using this stuff than just the smartphone itself. I’m so incredibly tired of all the 35mm shots...

Writing A Better JavaScript Library For The DOM
By Maksim Chemerisuk
January 13th, 2014
CSS, JavaScript, JQuery
1 Comment
At present, jQuery is the de facto library for working with the document object model (DOM). It can be used with popular client-side MV* frameworks (such as Backbone), and it has a ton of plugins and a very large community. As developers’ interest in JavaScript increases by the minute, a lot of people are becoming curious about how native APIs really work and about when we can just use them instead of including an extra library....

A Post By: Andrew Gibson For me, one of the biggest advantages of Lightroom over Photoshop is the ability to use Develop Presets on your images. Here are some of the benefits: You can create several virtual copies of an image and use different Develop Presets to see how they come out. Doing so uses virtually no extra hard drive space as the changes are stored in the Lightroom Catalog in the form of text commands. Develop Presets fit in neatly with your Lightroom workflow – there’s no need to export your images to Photoshop or other software. It’s easy to see how Develop Presets work....

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt A few weeks ago I posed the question: Do you Shoot in the Rain or Pack up at the First Drop? Over 7000 people voted and the survey results are in. Looks like close to half of us (39%) are crazy enough to just go for it come hell, or in this case high water, while about a third are worried about their gear. If you have a non-sealed camera body and kit lenses you should take due care in protecting your gear in inclement weather for sure. For those 18% of you what want to give it a go, here are a few articles on how to protect your gear: Tips to Protect your Gear...

My “big” ballhead of choice has been the Gitzo GH3780 for the last years. Pros: Super smooth and fine paced ball movements, one of the best in the market. Insane locking power and load capacity, relatively light weight, big nice ball lock. Cons: Awkward QR quick release system needs to be replaced by Wimberley C-12 or Sunwayfoto clamp, or screw on clamp (I use a RRS PCL). I don’t like handling of the friction lock, but it is on par with many other similar implementations. It’s not the best for the Sidekick, if that counts for you. As with all ballheads in this class,...

A Post By: Denise Love Where do you begin when you are considering using textures in your photography? I suggest you begin with the absolute best photo possible. Adding a texture to a bad photo does not make it a good photo. You want to make sure you have it exposed correctly, composed well, have a clear subject and not too much in the competing in the background competing. Textures work best with photos that are not too busy to start. Once I have chosen the photo I am going to work with, I do all of my edits before I add the texture, including adjusting the colors and sharpening. In this...

A Post By: Jeff Guyer The 3Pod P5CFH tripod folds flat– providing an innovative and reliable option for photographers looking for an affordable and compact carbon fiber tripod system In a recent review of another tripod, I pointed out that writing a tripod review is actually more difficult than it sounds. The primary reason is that not much seems to change. The concept is simple, right? Legs. Head. Plate. On the surface, there’s not much new to write about. Companies like Manfrotto, Induro, 3 Legged Thing, and others are constantly coming up with new ideas for materials, colors, and...

This article is the second in a series of four articles covering four ways to develop mobile applications. The last article covered how to accomplish this using native iOS development tools. In this article, we’ll look at how to build the same sort of application using native Android tools. We’ve been building a simple tip calculator. As with the iOS application, this one contains two screens: a main view and a...

By Kat… I also shared some amazing bike images – check them out! So you can probably guess what this week’s photography challenge will be, right? You guessed it – bicycles! Get out there and photograph bikes of all kinds: big ones small ones pedal bikes motorbikes scooters with people without people moving standing still old rusty ones shiny new ones You get the idea. Bikes are great subjects because you can usually find them anywhere, at any time...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt By Jonas Tana Okay I admit it. I have an unnatural obsession with photographing three things: doors windows bicycles But really, what photographer doesn’t? They make great subject matter and you can usually find something interesting about them. Waiting for just the right person to pass by that doorway, or a bird to land on the bike handlebars to complete the scene. Bikes make great shadows. People riding bikes make great panning subjects. The possibilities go on and on! So today I found you some great images of bicycles, not only to prove that I’m not...

About #3, wearable 4K:“… and just still taking frames from the footage for newspapers and magazines rather than carrying a dedicated stills camera.” Are you looking for the next “revolution” in photography? I spend some time thinking about it, and I do not think it is going to be that easy. 4K in itself is not even the enabler. Lytro/etc tech allows to adjust focus. But that alone is not enough, though IMO would be a prerequisite. Adjustment of DOF and perspective at the moment are only possible with the stereo imaging. IOW, you need two cam setup shooting in...

A Post By: Beryl Young If you’re anything like me, you made the investment in a DSLR camera to take beautiful professional quality photos of your kids. You want to document their childhood so the moments they may not remember on their own, they’ll have at their fingertips down the road. Your camera has opened up a world of possibility in how to go about documenting your days as a family. But, if you’re new to photography, you may have quickly realized that your camera has a lot of buttons, settings, and dials that you have no clue how to use. On top of it all, the advice you’ve been...

A Post By: Elizabeth Halford “But how will I zoom in and out?â€,  I blinked my eyes in disbelief. “You’ve got feet, don’t you?†My first encounter with the concept of fixed or prime camera lenses was when they were explained to me (a baby photographer) when I met with a local wedding photographer whose work I was (and still am) crushing on. I was so surprised to hear that there were lenses that (gulp) didn’t zoom. ‘What’s the point of that?’ I wondered. Why pay more for less? Clearly, I had lots of catching up to do! There are many merits to utilizing prime lenses in...

yabookie has a point. An F8 lens on a large format camera is a quite fast lens as the aperture (in mm) is quite large. The same also works in reverse. A F1.4 lens on a Pentax Q is in practice a very slow lens. as the aperture (in mm) is very small. In practice this means that a 25 mm F2.0 lens on m43 is equivalent to a 50 mm F4.0 on a 35 mm FF camera, with regard to collected photons and DOF and diffraction. Personally I would not call it a conspiracy though, but rather a fact of physics. But, I assume marketing is not slow to claim that this new F1.4 is very fast, when it in practice is...

you pay extra for f1.2 with AF and OIS. then there are the small details of metal exterior and hood, aperture ring and hardware OIS and AF switches. the latter is pretty useless for higher end bodies, as those have SAF/CAF/MF hardware switches already. so this lens should be compared against the 42.5 f0.95 Voigtländer lens, which costs $885 on Amazon.com. However, its MSRP is $1200. As we are discussing the Panasonic’s MSRP here, the proper comparison is:– Voigtländer: manual lens, metal exterior, f0.95: $1200– Panasonic: add AF and OIS for $400, drop to f1.2 depending on...

Just over four years ago, I decided to take a part-time position teaching website design and front-end development at a local university, the University of Rhode Island. My time in the classroom has been one of the most challenging as well as one of the most rewarding experiences in my career, and I believe that other Web professionals would greatly benefit from spending some time in an educational setting teaching...

A Post By: Katie McEnaney With the beginning of a new year, many people around the world take time to reflect on the past year and set goals or resolutions for the upcoming year. It’s a good time to ask yourself; “What do I want out of my photography this year?†For most of us, the response might be to improve our skills, to be inspired, and to find more time and energy to pursue our passions. No matter what you want out of your photography, your path to accomplishing your goals will require dedicated time and effort. If you are looking for a way to dramatically improve your...

A Post By: Elliot Hook  An Icelandic pony, shot against a setting sun When photographing wildlife, the sun is one of the most useful tools that enables you to create something different or add impact to your images. By taking control of your position relative to your subject, and to the sun, you can manipulate the available light to your advantage. Favourable times of day for wildlife photography are at the beginning and end of the day when the sun is low in the sky. This often coincides with periods of heightened activity of many animals, but also with a warmer directional light from...

I know everyone has really high hopes for this new Sigma 50 f1.4 Art being amazing, I hope Sigma didn’t let us down, and I am hoping the price is still similar to there old 50, and I would like to see a size comparison with the other 50mm lenses out there, and also with the Sigma 35 1.4 Art, I would like to see Sigma advertise it as the L killer, because i’m sure it has better image quality than the Canon 50 L, and I hope as good as the new Otus, I can wish can’t I ? small sensor doesn’t necessarily mean lower quality in low light. 4/3″ should be able to compete with 35mm format with f/1.4 zooms (12-35/1.4 and 35-100/1.4) and f/0.7 primes (18/0.7, 25/0.7, and 43/0.7). someone will make them for us, Pana, Oly, Sigma, or Tamron. but still from these shots we can see the image qualities are not good at base ISO. smaller sensor means lower quality in adequate light (same ISO means shallower wells on smaller sensors, thus more noise, lower quality). shoot at ISO25 with a 43/0.7 lens on a 4/3″ camera, when will we be able to do it? I realise the typical tiny flash is too weak to light up a large room at ISO 80, but there are lots of other uses for a bounce flash. Things like bouncing off a close wall for a portrait, or off a white sheet of paper for a product shot. Lots of uses even with low power. That said, I’ve shot whole rooms too with my LX5 flash bounced upwards using an index card. It does a passable job with its fast lens. Source Article from...

The Lean UX Manifesto: Principle-Driven Design
By Anthony Viviano
January 8th, 2014
Usability, User Experience
3 Comments
My colleague Ajay and I have been working at incorporating lean UX at the enterprise level for over two years. In studying it, I find that there’s a temptation to lay down rules, and if the rules aren’t followed… well, then, you can’t call it lean UX. At the end of the day, though, some lean UX is better than none. If you were told to finish off the following sentence, how would you do it? “You’re not practicing lean...

A Post By: Valerie Jardin We all go through creative blocks. Is it such a bad thing? Or, on the contrary, is it a sign that we need to push ourselves, and grow in the process? I think that a loss of passion may be an opportunity to renew and refresh your vision and turn it in a positive experience, instead of staying in a rut and feeling sorry for yourself. Ten Tips to Get your Photo Mojo Back 1 – Get out of your comfort zone You may hear this one often, but have you done it yet? A Post By: James Maher Fuji X100s: 1/125th at F2, ISO 6400. The most common photographic fear that I come across these days is when people are afraid to raise the ISO setting on their cameras. Just a handful of years ago, these fears were justified. Â Raising your ISO to 1600 or 3200 was a no-go for a majority of cameras. But no longer. Things are changing. Some Reasons Why to Shoot High ISOÂ Â The improvements in camera technology have been such that you can now photograph at ISO 1600, 3200, and even 6400Â with many of the newer SLRs, micro four-thirds, and mirrorless cameras. Before you...

In terms of capability in IQ, there is nothing else to ask for since it is already comparable with its brothers, and clearly ahead of its competition. Yet, the sensor is overkill for almost all lenses except one. My point is, this sensor would be excellent for a fixed, prime lens camera like the Coolpix A. Nikon has released its D3300 entry-level DSLR, which replaces 2012’s D3200. The D3300 gets a new 24.2 megapixel CMOS sensor with no optical low-pass filter, as well as an ‘Expeed 4’ image processor. The camera’s ISO range now tops out at 25,600 and continuous shooting has increased to 5 fps. The D3300 can also record 1080/60p Full HD video. A new, collapsible, 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 VR II kit lens has also been...

Long awaited ! 20, 35 and 85mm is my favorite combo for cityscapes (including some street and portraits) since many years (way back in the film era). The 1.8 85mm is very good, the 20mm just ok. The AF-D 35mm doesn’t deliver optically, while the 1.4 Nikon and Sigma lenses are too big and heavy for me. So I appreciate the new 1.8 Version and surely will buy one, at least when a resaonable street price will have settled. So, an updated 20mm still remains on my wish list… Source Article from...

I would say expect 16mp, a deeper buffer, maybe a FPS speed bump that will be more academic than mind-blowing, perhaps new processing engine (like they did with the D2hs) and a host of other internal electronic tweeks that don’t involve the photographer. Look at the D70/D70s, D300/D300s, D2h/D2hs, D2x/D2xs and D3/D3s comparisons and you’ll get an idea what to expect unless Nikon goes “off the reservation” and surprises everyone… ((chuckle))… don’t hold your breath on that note. I think usually the “s” models are cameras that benefit new...

50 Problems In 50 Days: The Power Of Not Knowing

I’ve travelled 2517 miles to try to solve 50 problems in 50 days using design, a journey that challenged me to fundamentally rethink my understanding of the user-experience design process. I set myself a challenge. I wanted to test the limits of design’s ability to solve problems — big and small. To do this, I left the comfort of my computer chair and set out into the unknown. Every day, I had 24 hours to observe a problem,...

A Post By: Kav Dadfar Undoubtedly the question that I get asked the most is what camera equipment I carry with me when I go on an assignment. My first bit of advice is to only carry what you need. After all, who wants to walk around all day with an extra 10kg (20 lb.) on their back? But at the same time you don’t want to be caught short so, as always, planning carefully and creating a shot list before you travel can be invaluable. You should try and get together a basic set of equipment which will cover you for most situations. You can then add more specialized equipment depending on the...

There is one thing I don’t like with this roadmap: The timelines 😉 Most probably we will see the bright-zooms by end of this year, respectively early next year, but we are just at the early beginning of this year. Tough, tough. Everything else: Well done Fuji, you are addressing most of the photographers wet dreams within this roadmap – most, not all (f2 90 😉 ).
