A Post By: Andrew Gibson  The Presets panel (found in the left-hand panels in the Develop module) is one of the most useful in Lightroom. The most obvious benefit of Develop Presets is that they can save you time, which is always a good thing. But they do more than that, including help you maintain a consistent approach to post-processing and using creative effects. Develop Presets tend to fall into one of two categories. The first are what you might call one-shot presets, which seem to work well on one or two images but not many others. A good example is Develop Presets intended to create...

This week’s video is a video from Matt Van Emmerik’s portfolio that I like. If you read yesterdays post which is a summary of Matt’s business you probably noticed Matt’s assertion that: HD video is not the future of Real Estate marketing, it is the present and if you don’t learn it well and offer it, you will eventually be weeded out of the market I firmly believe. It’s not easy to do, is time consuming and there are many pitfalls and expenses with a huge learning curve, but it’s incredibly fun, creative and lucrative so my advice would be to get started now instead of...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt By Ted Murphy This week’s photography challenge is all about experimentation! Try something new Step out of the old comfort zone Dare to be different Dare to mess it up even! I’m talking about creating abstract images, and there is no right or wrong. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and abstracts bring art down to its simplest forms: color, shape, and light. Couple tips for doing this: use a tripod if you want steady images (if you want zig zaggy then hand hold and see what happens) you’ll need long exposures, usually a few seconds long, to create...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt It’s well into 2014 now but hopefully you still have some festive feelings stirring inside you, eager to create something! Today let’s look at Christmas lights in a different way, simply as blogs of light. Just think what you can do with those blogs using some fun ideas with long exposures like zooming and moving the camera. For some tips on how they might have done this here’s some reading on the subject: How it was Done – Zooming the Exposure 3 Tips for Creating Dramatic Images using Motion Impressionist Photo Techniques 21 Abstract Images of...

@ techmine: While the K-3 is heavier (and arguably vying for the best built DSLR money can buy, yes including the D4), it is not much bigger(1.1mm, 6.5mm and 14.5mm in length, height, depth, respectively), yet trounces the specs of the E-M1. Not to mention, Pentax’s prime line-up don’t cause M4/3 lenses to be dwarfed by them. Here’s one comparison: http://camerasize.com/compact/#485.83,482.346,ha,t How is a full frame lens smaller than a M4/3 lens of same focal length and size? AND lack aperture ring? And then there’s all features the K-3 has that make the E-M1 a...

This is a very strange selection of 25 photos out of so many challenges. 25 is a very very small number to begin with. Also, some of the photos are only nice, but by no means in any way special. I would argue, there are thousands of pictures in the challenges, that a more artistic and would represent much better entries on a short list than some. And there are three portraits, three macros, but only one real landscape, no real architecture, no sport, … And finally, it is not clear by which criterion dpreview compiled this short list. Total number of votes, margin of winner against...

A Post By: Daniela Beddall Yikes! You’ve got your first DSLR! Now what? One of my friends recently received a DSLR from her husband for her birthday. She was over the moon! One afternoon over coffee, she asked if I had any advice to help her get started with her new camera. I’ll share some of the top tips that I shared with her, with you too: Nine tips to help you with your first DSLR #1 – Get off Auto as a soon as possible and start shooting on Manual mode Cameras these days are very clever when put on Auto. You will certainly get some lovely photos shooting on auto, but it will limit...

Actually I replied to you there. Imo you’re wrong and the core hw (processor, image engine, memory, sensor) are exactly the same. We’ll soon see who of us is right. As for the other features, I know they are added, they are not hw n a strict sense. It’s like saying that a computer with the same cpu, memory and drive, has a different and bigger case and a webcam, compared to another one. P.s. I’m quite sure the af is the same as nx300, just tuned via sw and NOT via hw. Again, we’ll se who’s right or wrong, w/o the need of being rude or offensive 🙂 Source...

Personally the best lens this year is Canon’s 11-22mm STMIt’s small, it’s light, it’s sharp, it’s got image stabilization, it’s got low distortion…and it’s so CHEAP!!! I don’t shoot people or go birding with it, but for any other occasions, like parties, hiking, travelling, street photography, it’s a must have. Source Article from...

Samsung’s latest flagship mirrorless camera has arrived, in the form of the NX30. It borrows the 20 megapixel sensor and Hybrid AF system from the NX300, but has a more traditional SLR-style design. What stands out the most is the camera’s XGA electronic viewfinder, which can be pulled away from the camera and tilted upward by 80 degrees. The 3-inch, 1.04 million dot AMOLED display is 70% brighter than the one on the...

20-50 had no OIS whatsoever. Not a very smart move I think. Samsung camera’s have no USP. Sony NEX has them (best sensor, extremely small bodies), Panasonic (video is state of the art and a multitude of good lenses, lots of different bodies to chose from), Oly (5 -axis IBIS, great lenses), Nikon 1 (very small, very good PDAF, can use all Nikon lens with it via an adapter). Fuji X-series (great styling or at least distinctive, renowned for its great sensor, very high qulaity lenses). Samsung…I honestly don’t know. they almost always seem to borrow good ideas of others, like...

Research wall, design wall, research board, ideation wall, inspiration board, moodboard, pinboard — Working walls are known by countless names. Underlying them all is a single idea: that physically pinning our sources of inspiration and work in progress, and surrounding ourselves with them, can help us to rearrange concepts and unlock breakthrough insights. In their 2009 paper on creativity in design, human media...

A Post By: Jeff Guyer The 3Pod P5CRH tripod is a reliable option for photographers looking for an affordable carbon-fiber tripod system. Sitting down to write a review of a tripod is actually more difficult that it sounds. When a new camera model hits the market, it often boasts significant changes over the model it’s replacing. Faster read and write speeds, or higher capacities set new memory cards apart from the old. These differences give us something to write about, and gear-heads something to argue about in photography forums. But when you’re staring at a row of new tripods standing...

Serious contrast issues. Seems like the early shadow cut is affecting this camera also. Apparently this disaster is due to dpreview saying that the pics of the earlier cams were rather low contrast. Fuji should listen to their engineers not dpreview. It’s because of this problem that I definitely won’t be getting an XE-2, and now I’m worried about the XP-2. fix this issue, Fuji, or at least let shadows go down to -3 to allow us to compensate for your manipulation. Before theorizing on this lens, I would urge everyone to see the below image set from this lens. This lens has about the creamiest bokeh of any normal lens. It is absolute butter. And like all N coated Nikkors, color/contrast is extremely high, something that these kinds of “tests” don’t always tell you. Clearly for professionals wedding shooters, portraitists, and general shooting, this lens is a no-brainer. Anyway, in case you haven’t seen these, have a look at this set of 58 f/1.4G images from Joe Marquez that he made in Hawaii. Lots of wide open portraits made in...

This year I’ve talked both real estate photographers that are struggling and photographers that were on track to do 800 to 850 shoots in 2013. There seem to be plenty of both cases. For those that are struggling it’s hard to determine if their problem is a geographic location with low demand for real estate photography, or they need help with marketing. There are two major factors that are an impediment to building a real estate photography business: Getting started isn’t easy. You have to be able to market yourself and keep at it. For most it takes a year or more to get up and running...

Nokia’s newest smartphone debuted with outstanding camera specs: a 20-megapixel PureView camera with optical image stabilization as well as the ability to save uncompressed Digital Negative (DNG), or “RAW,” files. While Nokia’s Lumia Black update now adds RAW shooting to the Lumia 1020 as well, the 6-inch Lumia 1520 was the first to debut the technology on a Nokia device, along with the new Nokia Camera app. We’ve been shooting with Nokia’s first phablet for a little while now and have put together an image gallery while working on our...

I rather prefer photos of living creatures. I am not an environment activist, but with the thought that these are photos from dead animals, i have a slight shiver. Take photos from living animals is possible, it costs more time and more efforts, but, especially with nowadays technology, it can be done. Have a look at my album, i have two photos of bees, not in the detail as this here, but at last, the bees are still alive… Source Article from...

A while back, I wrote a post about starting an open-source project. The focus of that article was on starting an open-source project as an individual. I received a lot of positive feedback and also some questions about how the process changes when you’re open-sourcing a project at work. Open source projects are always a team effort, and they alwars require a dedicated commitment to the project. Image...

Corporations live by profit, and it’s the present that matters. Pentax might have coined the SLR look but they failed to stay ahead. Minolta might have pioneered autofocus, but where are they now ? “Pentax also proves they can make a better DSLR than anyone else, if they like, and whether you, or anyone else, dislikes that fact. “Just for the sake of argument, I hope you realise this claim is utterly ridiculous. Pentax never even made a professional SLR, the best the ever had that came close to professional was the LX. Nowadays, the best SLR they make is the 645D, which...

With processoring power in smartphones nearing laptop levels 360-degree panoramas have become a more and more popular application. This year on Dpreview Connect we’ve had a closer look at Google’s Photosphere and Microsoft’s Photosynth apps, both handheld solutions, and the Motrr Galileo robotic iPhone cradle. In combination with the Sphere iOS app the latter automates the panorama capturing process and makes it quicker. However, despite the Motrr’s advantage over manual alignment all existing solutions have one common flaw: shooting a 360-degree panorama photo...

You probably noticed that I put my Christmas header photo up on the blog recently. This header image has an interesting historical story that goes with it of how PFRE blog readers noticed and solved the mystery of what the pattern of 5 lights (one red and 4 green) are in the top center above the two tallest high rise buildings in downtown Seattle. I did a post on this in 2007, 2009 and 2010. Long time readers please forgive me for repeating this post but I just love this story, I’m sure there are hundreds of readers that haven’t heard the story yet! I shot the Christmas blog header...

A Post By: Darren Rowse Last week we shared a tutorial and image collection on taking beautiful Christmas Bokeh images which got shared around the web like crazy. As a followup we thought it might be fun to share a collection of a different type of Christmas image – those that include some aspect of Light Painting. Light Painting is a technique whereby you create spectacular images by moving different types of light through a scene while you take a longer exposure. The results can be quite striking – as you’ll see from the images in this post. Want to see more light painting? Check out...

By Alexey Kljatov What particularly impressed us at dPS HQ was the way Alexey shoots the images using a system that is literally taped together components. He uses a Canon A650 (a point and shoot released back in 2007) with old 2nd hand Helios lens from an old Russian made camera. It’s quite remarkable that something so cobbled together takes such beautiful images but it illustrates just what can be achieved when you put your mind to it! Learn more about his method...

I realize there are positives and negatives with so many of these cameras, however, I am a mid-grade photo amateur and I purchased this camera about 2 weeks ago. I also have a complete Lumix 4/3 system, but I have to say this is a great camera. I’m using it with the 30mm Sigma lens (which I had to update the lens firmware to work with the D5300), and the quality is outstanding. I got the gray D5300 and the Sigma Lens is the same gray color and they are an awesome combination! Also, I shoot products for web work and the D5300 works great tethered to my PC using the Nikon Camera Control...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt We ran this poll last in February of 2009, so I thought it was time for an update to see if there have been any changes since last time. I’m especially curious about any Adobe offerings since the Creative Cloud too affect. Has that swayed your software choice? Tell us what post production software you use the most. If you use more than one, indicate the one you use most often, for most of your editing needs. For example I use Lightroom and Photoshop CC, but LR5 is my primary tool as I use it for 90% of my editing. By filling this in you will also be giving us...

A Post By: Joseph Eckert Get Your Creative Juices Flowing with Different Focal Lengths 14mm lens I’ve gone through periods of low creativity in my photographic journey. Times when I don’t have compelling ideas or nothing seems new. When the excuses why not to go takes pictures (“It’s too cold, it’s too hot, the light isn’t right, it’s too cloudy, it’s not cloud enoughâ€) manage to outweigh my need to photograph, and I go into an unproductive slump. It can be hard to break out of these slumps, but there are lots of ways to get the spark back including everything from: getting...

2013 has been an exciting year for mobile imaging with lots of new features and technologies, as we’ve been covering here on DPReview Connect. We’ve seen innovations in sensors, new software features and a general tendency to focus on the imaging capabilities of mobile devices. As we reflect back on the past year and look forward to even more interesting advances in 2014, we’re sharing our thoughts on the most important trends in smartphone imaging in 2013. Bigger sensors Despite the fact that these days far more images are captured with mobile devices than...

2013 saw the release of five cameras in a (relatively) new class, which we’re calling ‘fixed lens compact cameras’. Specifically, large-sensor fixed-lens compact cameras. Fujifilm’s X100S is one of our favorite cameras of the year, addressing many of the faults of its predecessor. Sony followed up on the RX1 from last year with the RX1R, which shares the same 24MP full-frame sensor but minus an AA filter for superior resolution. Meanwhile, both Nikon and Ricoh released APS-C 28mm equivalent cameras, while Sigma’s DP3 offers a 75mm equivalent lens. Click through...

A Post By: David Pearce As a photographer the time will come that you are asked to shoot a friend’s wedding for free or for payment. Most photographers baulk at the idea, citing the importance of the day and fear of failure as the main reasons. In this article I want to look at what it takes to shoot someone’s wedding to help you decide if it is your lack of self confidence that is preventing you for taking one on, or a honest reflection of your abilities coupled with a moral obligation telling you not to ruin the day. Are you ready? This is clearly subjective and to a certain extent...

A Post By: Charlie Borland There is so much to photograph during the holidays from religious symbols, to beautiful outdoor lighting displays, a well decorated tree, and the gathering of family and friends. You might already photograph and print your own holiday cards or a personal calendar, and each year you might be thinking of new and unique ideas for next year’s images. With the holidays soon over and all those displays being packed away until next year, many Christmas trees will soon be recycled. But before you recycle your tree, consider using it for a unique photography opportunity:...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt If you live in the norther hemisphere like I do you may have been buried by the white stuff already. Here in Alberta we’ve had almost as much snow in the last 30 days as we did all last winter, and it’s still coming! Yesterday Mother Nature decided to play games with us and rain, giving us skating ponds for roads and sidewalks. Thanks!! But, this season can also make for some stunning winter scenes, if you can motivate yourself to get out of your nice warm house and go do some photography. The light is great this time of year because of the low angle on the...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt This week we’re going to focus on the season at hand and just embrace it! Your weekly  photography challenge is – winter! I know it’s cold out (trust me I KNOW!) but find a day that’s bearable and just go for it. Be prepared (see link to some tips below), dress warmly, grab a hot chocolate and away you go! Doing what others find difficult or challenging, including shooting in what some might call inclement weather, will help take your photography to the next level. You’ll come back with shots none of your friends have, and get “ooohs†and...

A Post By: Darren Rowse Pin It It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas… and in our forums I’ve noticed more and more great Christmas images being shared – some of which feature a technique that is always popular at this time of year – Bokeh Christmas lights shots. The technique takes a bit of experimenting and practice but is relatively simple to do. You need some Christmas lights and a camera lens with a reasonably ‘fast’ aperture (or a large aperture). The key is to shoot at the larger end of your available aperture – this throws the background (and foreground) of your...

A Post By: Mark Sutton Getting to know Picasa If you’re looking for an image browser and editor that is feature packed and easy to use then Picasa just may be the only bit of software you’ll ever need. It may not have all the advanced features you would expect from some of the more well-known image editors but it is a nice piece of software that punches way above its weight, and what’s more, it’s free and available for both Mac and Windows platforms. Before I get started I will state unequivocally that I have never in the past or present worked, in any capacity, for Google or any of...

A Post By: Jeff Guyer “Photography Business Secrets,†by Lara White is a great resource for any photographer looking to grow their business. With just a few weeks left before the end of the year, I find myself deep in my annual wrap-up ritual. I don’t like carrying stuff over from December into January if I can avoid it. I make sure that shoots are edited, albums and prints are ordered, contracts are signed, gear is cleaned and serviced, and any other loose ends are taken care of. Transitioning from one year to the next isn’t just a matter of getting my “stuff†in order, but...

Removing the rear display would terrify broad swathes of the camera-buying population. You’d be entering seriously niche territory with a move like that. But since you asked, Adrian, the purpose would be to cut out all chimping, forcing you to look up, engage with the world, and keep shooting until the opportunity disappears or you keel over from exhaustion – because you won’t know if you’ve got the shot. The hope is you might end up with two good shots by working like that. With a display on the camera it’s almost impossible to keep shooting once you’ve got a good shot. You...
