Unless you’ve been on Mars for the last few months, you’ve already heard the news that Adobe is feature-freezing Fireworks. Online shopping is about convenience and comfort, and those of us who have at least once ventured into the realm of online shopping know how time-consuming and unpleasant it can be. Actually don’t get the fuss around the GM1? Ok it IS nice, sure. What I actually don’t get is why everyone is going ga-ga over it, yet at the same time shun the E-PM2 as being the ‘beginners’ camera? It is 10mm taller, 10mm wider and 3mm thicker. That isn’t a whole hell of a lot really (also DPR, why no comparison shot?). Thing is though, that unless using the ‘kit’ lens, the GM1 is a bit more awkward with existing m43’s lenses, potentially needing the grip to make it that bit taller. The E-PM2 on the other hand had the same great AF as the...

Glad to see Pentax getting some justified kudos. Although I have never owned a true DSLR other than K10D, (my other cameras were/are a Sony f717, Panasonic GH2, Sony NEX 5R and a few compacts, including right now, the excellent and also underrated like Pentax, Samsung EX2F with f1.4 lens), when i go through my Aperture library, the Pentax photos are the most natural, sharp and have the best dynamic range. Further, all their DSRLs have the best handling, with superb ergonomic grip and positioning of controls. Not to mention splash proof bodies. If Pentax launch a DSLR or mirrorless with an...

Another way of choosing them if size and budget aren’t major concerns:15 MP (effective) @ 75 mm? DP324 MP @ 35mm? RX1R16 MP @ 35mm? X100s16 MP @ 28 mm? GR or Coolpix A They have similar image quality to begin with, and anyone looking at them are likely well-versed in post-processing to tune the camera’s nuances/colours to their own liking. They’re further apart in terms of controls and operations, seeing how only X100s has a built-in EVF and the DP3 can be a slower (going by others’ opinions), but pragmatically none of them are committing major usability no-nos....

First, I’m pleased to see the Samsung NX 300 listed; it is an excellent little camera. It is by no means revolutionary but has a decent APS-C sensor, hybrid phase and contrast detection AF, a very nice 3.3″ AMOLED articulating touch screen display, great WiFi and NFC, and a very useful iFn button mounted on lenses. Coupled with the 18-55mm kit lens it is, to my mind, Samsung’s first real mature mirrorless offering, and a very good value. I’ve really been impressed with it. {pitch over – just giving it some love} As for best mirrorless, I’m going to abstain...

Very nice indeed. I am very, very impressed with Fuji. They seem to relentlessly plug away, continually improving their camera bodies ( firmware upgrades make a freshly update XP-1 almost a new camera compared to the original ) and they just keep on increasing the lens range. Very impressive. And I must say the only weaknesses, around AF in the main, are also much improved too. The web is full of some excellent work being done by bloggers and pros using Fuji now. People like Mike Kobal. Like I said, its very impressive. Well done Fuji. Source Article from...

The Df and D4 RAW files look fantastic at those ISO settings, whether or not it’s needed is going to depend on what you shoot. Concert photography, events, really any available light work the extra expense for the Df is going to be well worth it. But of course the D610 is an extremely capable all-around shooter, no doubt. Dual SDs, especially since the Df is not a video camera, are not such a big deal as fast cards have never been cheaper. I have yet to fill the 32 GB primary card in my D800 shooting RAW stills with some video. Source Article from...

A Post By: Jeff Guyer “Photoshop Actions†from ATNX Digital provides an affordable, user-friendly actions alternative for Photoshop users. Let’s face it– Photoshop is a beast, and a tough one to tame. There are at least half a dozen “right†ways to do just about everything, and I think it’s safe to say that most of us don’t use it to anywhere near its full potential. I’ve lost track of how long ago I started using PS (version 4, maybe?), and I’ve yet to unlock all its secrets– which I think is a good thing. I hardly expected Samyang to turn around brand new optical designs. This series of lenses took some years to develop and produce, and seem to be something of a success for them. They presumably decided to modify the lenses to capitalise on the market that Sony will (based on historical evidence) fail to provide for, and negate the problems caused by adapters, without going “deep” enough as to do a complete redesign. It’s common business sense, really. Sadly it means these lenses won’t balance very well on the A7/R, but Sony aren’t in the business of making well...

When a group wants to generate ideas for a new product or to solve a problem, you will usually hear the clarion call, “Let’s brainstorm!†You assemble a group, spell out the basic ground rules for brainstorming (no criticism, wild ideas are welcome, focus on quantity, combine ideas to make better ideas) and then have people yell out ideas one at a time. Brainstorming is often the method of choice for ideation, but it...

I’ve had quite a few discussions with people concerning some aspect of being both a real estate agent and a real estate photographer. I find when a subject like this pops up out of the blue from a bunch of different people I usually indicate a trend going on. There were four different questions that people posed on this subject: Is there a benefit to being both an agent and a real estate photographer that shoots for other agents besides your own listings? Is there some conflict of interest if you are both a listing agent and a real estate photographers? Are there many agents that do real...

A Post By: Barrie Smith Review Canon Powershot S120 Digital Camera You could wonder at my bravado in reviewing this tiddler when all it seems to offer is a digicam with moderate specs and little else. Aah! But look further! Features and Specs Its story begins with Canon’s well-tried DIGIC 6 processor, along with a relatively large CMOS sensor. The maximum aperture is a generous, optically stabilized f/1.8, which does, quickly fall to f4 once you start zooming. However, it is the first S-series model to feature an f/1.8 lens and the 24mm wide end is extremely useful for tight interiors. But...

A Post By: Andrew Gibson The main benefit of Lightroom’s Library module is that it saves you time. It is much quicker, and ultimately simpler, to organize your photos using Lightroom Collections, than it is to search through the folders on your hard drive containing those photos when you need something. The skills you’ve learned so far in this series (yes, there is a series – I’ll provide links to the relevant articles at the appropriate points) all come together with Lightroom’s Publish Services. You can use these to publish photos to photo sharing websites like Facebook, Behance,...

This is a guest contribution by Alison Dias-Laverty Take your Photos and Videos to the Next Level: Create a Video Slideshow One of the most memorable photos I have taken was on the highlands of Scotland. It is one of the most beautiful and breathtaking views and experience that changed my life. Yet as many times that I have tried to capture my feelings and emotions of being in that present moment of magnificence, I could never rekindle those same feelings in all my still photos. Technology is truly exciting for the creative. You can now use your photos and video clips, mix them to music to...

My personal experience disagres with this study.I have hundreds of moments where I wished I had a camera back then and took a picture, because its just a fuzzy memory to me now.And I don’t think I have any memory issues with moments I took a picture, and if I have, I have images to look at.And there is that road trip I did 10 years ago where I remember the images I took, I don’t remember the actual moments, but I do remember the images, which helps me rememeber the actual moments, and I lost thoes image like 8 years ago.I did another road trip 7 years ago, and I didn’t have...

I’m the kind of person who forgets what they went upstairs to get, etc… Alzheimer’s? possibly, but I have been like this for most of my life. My contact sheets used to prompt a precise recall of events and have been used in court as evidence, but then, younger, I could also give a precise recall of events without them, and sober, still am able to now. But I have a very precise, accurate recall of human interaction my kids hate me for, because these things are important. We dont take pics only to remember. We take pics to be able to gaze a long time, as in a gallery, at...

As one of the top designers on Dribbble, Jan Martin attracts many followers with his visual design skills. Unlike many designers, Jan is incredibly humble about what he has achieved. “Stop following what the visionary designers think,†he says. “There is no wrong or right way. We need to create our own things and always design with our heart.†Jan grew up in the small city of Brandenburg, about...

This is a guest contribution from Meghan Aileen Schirmer at The Shoppe Designs & Photoshop Actions. Their In Vogue Action Set is available on Snap N Deals now for just $29! (until December 24, 2013) Learning to Love Photoshop Actions When it comes to Photoshop Actions or presets photographers tend to love them or hate them. But, when done right they can really enhance a digital image in a way that a straight out of the camera digital image cannot achieve. If you use film, that is very different, and the variety in types of film and processing techniques allows for a greater variety...

I have the previous version of the CX190 pro4. When you splay the tripod totally flat, the last section collars are touching the ground and not the feet (circumfrence too small) Because the bottom of the center column has a release button, they have a bag hang lug on the crown. The hole in this is so thin that you have to buy a specialized thin carabina to hang the bag from. Other than these two niggles, the tripod has been great. I would buy it again in a heart beat. I got mine for travelling and treking and it fold’s down to a perfect size for fixing to the outside of the ruck sack...

Google’s Nexus 5 marks a substantial advance in the frequently maligned imaging capabilities of the Nexus smartphone line. The camera’s optical image stabilization combines with its decent 8-megapixel sensor to deliver images that, while not class-leading, are certainly competitive. However, in our review we found that the Nexus 5’s camera performance was undermined by speed issues: the camera app was slow to start up, exhibited frustrating shutter lag and felt pokey when focusing. Soon after the phone started shipping Google said it would address these issues, and it has...

A Post By: Helen Bradley The Blend If feature in Photoshop blends one layer into another based on the content of either of the two layers. It can be used, for example, to replace a sky by making it easy for you to knock out the blue sky without having to make a complex selection. In this article, you’ll learn some Photoshop tips on how to use Blend If to replace a sky. Start by opening an image such as the one shown here. Right click on the background layer and choose Duplicate Layer to make a second copy (keyboard shortcut is “command/control + Jâ€). You now have two layers with the...

A Post By: Elliot Hook A telephoto lens is perhaps one of the first lenses people buy to add to their kit, as they are useful in many genres of photography.  The reach that a telephoto lens can offer is crucial for a lot of sports, wildlife or other ‘action’ photography. However, it is that same reach that can introduce the problems that prevent people getting sharp results.  Here are six tips to help you perfect the technique of maximizing sharpness with a telephoto lens. 1. Shutter Speed Selection One of the biggest hurdles to overcome when shooting with a telephoto lens is camera...

Speaking of Adobe products : who took their special CC offering for photographers ? I thought hard about it, but no : I will drag CS6 as long as I can and own LR5. I’m still angry about the way they deals with long time customers (I have it since 1996), updated to CS6 just a few months before CC was launched and felt that last update was wasted. Then came a special offering until the end of December for owners of CS6, then a few months later they made it available for anybody, and shortened the delay to the 2th December previous owners included.. Then they prolonged the delay until the...

The Line Of Least Resistance
By Sorin Pintilie
December 11th, 2013
Interaction Design, Interfaces, Psychology

In chess, the psychological dimension that springs from a dialogue between two brains, two ideas, two strategic conceptions that depend on the personality of each chess player has long been somewhat of a romantic mystery. How do Grandmasters think? What strategies do they use? More often than not, the most successful strategies are rooted in our own very nature. And common to most Grandmasters is that they almost never take the...

Freebie: Exo 2.0, A Contemporary Geometric Sans Serif Font
By The Smashing Editorial
December 10th, 2013
Free Fonts, Freebies, Typography
10 Comments
Back in the days when he was a student, Portuguese graphic and type designer Natanael Gama started to play with glyphs — as a way to discover typography. Doodling around, he created Exo, a font which he released for free in a Kickstarter project. The project turned out to be quite successful. Exo became so popular that Natanael did a complete redesign. It was two years ago. Today, Natanael is no...

A Post By: Ralph Velasco How to Capture the Essence of a Place Travel Photography Tips If you’re a traveler and you enjoy bringing back photos of the places you’ve visited – let’s face it, who doesn’t – then it’s extremely important to capture a set of images that more completely tells the story of the place. To me, the best way to ensure this in my own work is to work from a well thought out and organized shot list. Then I don’t have to worry about trying to remember the categories of images I have yet to photograph, as I have a check list at the ready all the time and I can...

A Post By: Andrew Gibson Landscape photography is difficult. If you live in a location that lacks spectacular landscapes, or you just fancy going somewhere new, travelling to a new location – especially a beautiful one – may seem like the solution. A few days ,or a week, in a national park or other beautiful spot with your tripod and camera sounds like a great way to create some wonderful new images. What could go wrong? Actually, plenty. The weather (and consequently the light) might not do what you want. If you are shooting by the sea, the timing of the tides may not be conducive to...

schmaud: I have an E-420 too (bought as new), but unfortunately I feel a bit differently about it these days. When I bought it the options for small size and big sensor were it and the Sigma DP series – how things have changed! Within a year I added the Sigma 30/1.4, which gave it an excellent boost. However, taking pictures today, it can’t keep up. I now have the Olympus E-P1 – which is considered to be a slow focuser with a noisy sensor. However, compared to the 420 the P1 is a high-performance camera. The image has a chance of fitting into the dynamic range, there is...

These comments are ridiculous. These are working pros turning excellent, dramatic work daily, sometimes under extreme conditions. If I go out and shoot all day and I delete all the images because they’re crap, oh well, I had a fun day. These guys may not get paid that day! Take a look at last few year’s winners. If you can’t say that they are excellent images, you need to reconsider your hobby. Or, it’s just jealousy. Source Article from...

They’re realizing that data collection and data analysis have a measurable return on investment, and decision-makers are asking to see them. As a developer, business owner or marketer, you need to know how to gather data and how to do it...

A few days ago Lance Selgo in Arlington, TX was talking to a Redfin agent. She gave him a link to data from new Redfin Study. At first he didn’t realize that it was an updated version of the now famous 2010 study where Redfin first showed the effect of professional photography on real estate sales. After he realized what it was he passed it on to me. By this time you may have seen other sites referencing this. As a reminder of how this study identifies professional real estate photography, they use the EXIF data from the MLS photos and if the listing has photos shot with a DSLR it calls it...

A Post By: Valerie Jardin While you may be at ease shooting candid street photography, you may not feel quite as comfortable doing street portraits… Making a portrait of a stranger, is a very different approach which requires an interaction with your subject. If you are a very social person who talks to strangers anywhere you go, like I do, taking the next step should not be too much of an issue. If, on the other hand, the thought of approaching a stranger terrifies you, keep reading. Meet Steve ~ While waiting for the light to cross the street, I made a comment on his cool hat. We talked...

No wonder, with the resolution and pixel pitch of an 8 mpix aps-c sensor. When you compare the old Fuji S5 and you used that compared to any 10 to 14 mpix sensor in that time, the Fuji won it at high ISO. In 2007, it made 1300 ISO clean in detail, while D200 and D300 could not hold the distance with it. In some way this is an up to date low resolution sensor, and if camera manufactureres would concentrate on 10 to 14 mpix in APSC and bring cameras with such good high ISO values, they would sell them, condition is a fair pricing, not a fancy Nikon Df one for sure. I still use my Nikon D40,...

A Post By: Paul Burwell The last time I counted, there were about seventy two quadrillion photos of birds on the internet. Therefore, if you’re dedicating your time to try to stand out as a bird photographer, there is a ton of competition out there. However, there is one thing that you can try to incorporate in your photos that will at least have them stand out a little bit. Creating More Compelling Bird Portraits Wait for the turn of the head. Sounds pretty simple doesn’t it? It sounds simple, but achieving it is often a bit trickier. Many bird species have their eyes placed on opposite...

Full 360-degree panoramas once involved big DSLRs, tripods with panorama heads and a lot of shooting and editing time. But today the processing power of smartphones means that much of this work can be done by a device you carry in your pocket.  Google’s Photosphere camera mode which was launched with Android 4.2 and the Nexus 4 smartphone allows you to capture a full 360-degree panorama that can then be browsed either on the device or in the Google Plus photo viewer. (It’s also available on the new Nexus 5, which we just reviewed.) You can shoot handheld, with the app...

I can’t but think how weird the people have become. Is there no more beautiful things in this World? Is there only conflict, tragedy, disasters, cataclysms? And the mind of people picking out those for being “the best”, or “top” (of what)? If we think of our life as a cross-section of all we can perceive, isn’t it high time we replaced this kind of thinking? Or do we let things go as they go, and end up in really miserabe frame of mind, where if something does not involve grief, pain, death, or loss – it is not worth publishing / highlighting?I...

Influenced by his father, an architect, Benjamin Dauer had an early fascination with design, which came first from watching his father draw by hand and then connecting these drawings to physical space. A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt Something that tends to strike fear into the heart of many new photographers is street photography. So today I’m going to urge you to get out of your comfort zone and go try it. I teach a travel photography class and when I share my photos of different exotic places, it’s always the street photography, and in particular the people photos, that get my students most excited. Taken during a photowalk in Portland, OR. This guy was stopped at a light and I took about 20 photos of him in 30 seconds. Made him laugh! If he had minded he would have said something,...

Today I want to share some street photography images I found particularly good for different reasons. Whether you do this type of photography or not, appreciate the art and skill and enjoy these images. Notice there are a lot of black and white images. It’s pretty common for street photography as it really narrows down to the subject, light and shape. By publikaccion By Stepan Mazurov By praline3001 By...

A Post By: James Maher The Bowery by ONA Bags These days, no piece of photography equipment excites me more than a good camera bag. Or even better, a practical, light, good-looking camera bag. I’ve been a fan of ONA bags for over a year now and the Bowery is one of my favourites.  It’s small and made for traveling light.  I carry it around almost daily. Well padded and well made, the bag has water resistant, waxed canvas (and believe me, I’ve tested the water-resistant part out), leather details, and beautiful brass hardware.
