There’s a long tradition of high-quality compact cameras going back more than a hundred years, and even now, in the days of digital, there are some incredibly capable compact cameras on the market. Shop carefully and you can get excellent image quality, full manual control and plenty of other bells and whistles, provided you don’t mind paying a little more than you might for the average point and shoot. Top-notch lenses, great sensors and plenty of control are the hallmarks of every one of our top five recommended compact cameras for enthusiasts. Prices given are...

We’re still working to get some older smartphone models into our new and improved studio test scene, such as the Nokia Lumia 925 that we recently retested using the new and larger scene. The new test scene was an especially valuable improvement for our work at Connect. It allows us to better examine the fixed wide-angle lens cameras of smartphones, which could not be as accurately examined using our former smaller test scene. Our newly established protocol for shooting the scene as well as processing the results offers us more accurate real world information about all cameras...

Modifying Admin Post Lists In WordPress
By Daniel Pataki
December 5th, 2013
Admin, Techniques, Tools
10 Comments
Have you ever created a custom post type and then found that only the titles and dates of your posts are displayed in the admin lists? While WordPress will add taxonomies for you, that’s the most it can do. Adding relevant at-a-glance information is easy; in this article, we’ll look how to modify admin post lists with WordPress. To make sure we’re on the same page, an admin list is the table of posts shown in the admin section when...

Imagine that you have just written a post on your blog, tweeted about it and watched it get retweeted by some popular Twitter users, sending hundreds of people to your blog at once. Your excitement at seeing so many visitors talk about your post turns to dismay as they start to tweet that your website is down — a database connection error is shown. Or perhaps you have been working hard to generate interest in your startup....

A Post By: Elizabeth Halford We can find ourselves pretty wrapped up in photography bad habits or behaviours long before we realize that maybe we should be trying to find another way. Sometimes, you don’t even see them and, if you’re lucky, you’ll have a friend who can kindly point them out. So let’s take a look today and see if I can be the friend who says, “ahem…you’ve got toilet paper on your shoe.†Five Photography Bad Habits to Quit Today 1. Hesitation A habit you may find yourself in is hesitation. Hesitating too long in a situation can prevent you from getting that...

A Post By: Andrew Gibson Andrew S. Gibson is the author of Mastering Lightroom Book One: The Library Module, on offer now at Snapndeals for a limited time. One of the things about any software, such as Lightroom 5 that does a lot of things, is that many photographers tend to use only a small number of the available features. For example, I’ve never bothered to use the keywords feature much in Lightroom. I’ve always seen it as a waste of time. It takes time to add keywords to images and I don’t really need keywords to search for images – I know where to find them already. But since I...

A few years ago, the idea of a DSLR under $1000 was just a distant dream, but these days the financial bar to entry is much lower than it was in the past. And DSLRs aren’t the only game in town anymore either – mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras are maturing quickly, and there are plenty of affordable options on the market. Here’s our list of the top five interchangeable lens cameras that we’d currently recommend for under $1000 – including a kit zoom lens. Prices given are representative of street pricing, and our recommendations are arranged from...

Back in June, I took six compact underwater cameras along with me on a Hawaiian vacation. Upon my return, I was disappointed to see that none of them blew me away in terms of performance or photo quality. When the Nikon 1 AW1 was announced, I was pretty excited – finally, someone made a rugged camera with a larger sensor (that doesn’t require a special housing to take it underwater). To top it off, the AW1 is built on Nikon’s 1 System, which means that it’s a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera with super-fast autofocus and subject tracking. As you might...

Sites like Etsy and Ebay have made selling items online easy, but it’s hard to reach customers without high-quality images of your product. Even though some sellers are willing to shell out the big bucks for a top of the line camera, they often don’t have any clue how to light their items. A new product is Kickstarting its way into entry-level product photography. The Foldio lightbox aims to help inexperienced photographers on a budget capture their items in the best light possible. Folding down flat enough to fit in a briefcase, the Foldio easily props up with the use of...

My thoughts too. Everything is great about this Sigma, IQ, speed, price, and the FL range is just what I most want for street photo taking and walking about, but it is too intimidating for street shooting and too heavy for walking about. So, really wonderful lens, exciting spec and unbelievable price or value, but practically speaking it is not so desirable if you think about it with a cool head. If an electronic Speedbooster is available for M43 mount, then it would be different. 25-50mm f/1.2. Now, that would be equivalent to four f/1.2 lenses, 24mm, 28mm, 35mm, 50mm. I think that is...

Efficiently Simplifying Navigation, Part 1: Information Architecture
By Anastasios Karafillis
December 3rd, 2013
Navigation, User Experience
3 Comments
Navigation, as crucial as it is to the user experience, is merely a means to an end — the end being to consume content. This is why users have very contrasting expectations about content and navigation. While content is supposed to be unique, surprising and exciting, navigating to it is supposed to be as simple and predictable as possible. This series of articles, divided into two parts, is a...

By Guest Contributor Matthias Weinberger Pushing the Limits to Overcome Photography Boredom In the beginning the most interesting part of photography for me was the element of surprise and discovery. I was never were sure if what I did would turn out to be a great picture. Like an athlete I was always looking for the next adrenaline kick. Once you’ve been shooting for a couple of years that rush fades – because with the knowledge you have about lighting and composition you pretty much control everything in order for the final product to be perfect. Knowing the end result before a shoot...

Known as high key photography, this technique instantly cures problems with ugly backgrounds and focuses the viewer’s attention on your subject. Moondog Labs is Kickstarting its anamorphic adapter lens for iPhone 5/5s that will allow iPhoneographers to capture a widescreen video or still when shooting in a standard aspect ratio.  Anamorphic lenses were first used in the 1950s, bringing a widescreen look to films shots on 35mm stock. While you can crop a video or image to fit a widescreen format by cropping horizontally, you lose part of the image. An anamorphic lens “squeezes” a widescreen image onto the recording medium. With Moondog Labs’ 1.33x Anamorphic Adapter lens, a video shot on the iPhone in the...

Looking for an easy way to share your photos with nearby smartphone and tablet users? There are plenty of options, and SanDisk has a couple of their own in a new SanDisk Connect line of flash memory storage devices with built-in wireless that you can access from any device. We can’t fault the name — Connect — but the system itself leaves much to be desired. The basic idea is this: put your media on a Samsung drive while at home or on the go, and others can connect to it using an app and view the photos or stream media without the need for an Internet connection. It...

Just finished catching up to the point I started watching after getting in from work, and I have to say I enjoyed it. The studio lighting section in the middle felt a bit out of place, but I found so much of the focus (no pun intended) on CSCs and other cameras like the Sony Q series disappointing, but unsurprising. It was said during the broadcast CSCs don’t match up to DSLRs in terms of sales, but the variety and push from manufacturers and reviewers in camera mags and sites like DPReview, to some extent, see CSC cameras as a means to boost flagging camera sales, which is in every...

Guesstimates by analysts put the number of mobile app downloads this year at somewhere between 56 and 82 billion, with the average user downloading somewhere between 26 and 41 apps, with a smaller subset of those apps being used on a regular basis. Other numbers indicate that 95% of downloaded apps are abandoned within a month and 26% of apps are only used once. Depending on the user, these abandoned apps are deleted or ignored, never to be...

A Post By: Jeff Guyer A Better Way to Carry Your Camera? The updated Capture PRO from Peak Design offers a secure, hands-free alternative to traditional camera straps. About a year and a half ago I posted a short review on Facebook of the original version of the Capture Camera Clip from Peak Design Ltd. Since getting my hands on it, Capture has become an integral tool for my location, event, and street photography, as well as a perfect solution for quick camera access while I’m teaching, either in the classroom or on location. That’s why I was so excited last August, when the San...

reversing a ~50mm lens to do extreme macro cheaply is nothing new, but Alexey definitely went a bit further than most, and the results are fantastic. Here’s a shot I took of air bubbles in a glass of orange juice with coloured papers in the background. Ten years old, made with a 4MP Casio QV4000 (the poor man’s Canon Powershot G2), but it’s still one of my personal favourites:http://www.pbase.com/gbleek/image/17736911 Source Article from...

Today we’re presenting you with a similar list of the most popular DSLR lenses among our readership. As usual – Canon and Nikon lenses were by far the most popular so I’ve divided them into two lists but I’ve also included a third list of lenses from other manufacturers below. Nikon Lenses 1. A Post By: John Davenport One of my favorite times of the day to photograph is sunrise. There’s just something about the peacefulness of being up before the sun, before most of the human world, that allows me to clear my head. Sunrise photos have always been high on the list of fan favorites and I know that there are a great many DPS readers who love them as well, so I thought I’d share with you a little bit about how I made the shot above from finding the location to setting up the camera and then a step by step walk-through of my Lightroom workflow. Smartphones are great for casual picture-taking, but they’re at their absolute worst in poor lighting, or when using flash. One of the reasons smartphones are so popular is that they’re small, but better images don’t require enormous cameras, and increasingly, good-quality compacts are shipping with social-friendly options including built-in wireless connectivity. For this list we’ve selected five of our top recommendations for cameras that you should take to those special occasions. Prices given are representative of street pricing, and our recommendations are...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt Framing is exactly as it implies: seeing your image through something that frames it such as: a doorway, a window, through leaves of a tree, etc. Shot at Cafe du Monde in New Orleans. To me the people in the foreground help tell the story. Framing your subject within a another is a strong, graphical composition. It adds a three dimensional quality to your images, and creates depth. Using framing adds a foreground element that can help set the scene, tell the story, and lead the viewer’s eye into the image. Start looking for ways to shoot through natural...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt  By lagusa Framing in composition This week I want to showcase some images that use framing in composition to create a successful image. It is one of the most difficult elements to master, but one of the most important in terms of create depth in your images. In a nutshell this is what frame is all about: adding a foreground object into your scene that frames, or helps highlight your subject sometimes involve stepping back from your original composition and looking for elements to use as a frame usually using a shallow depth of field to put the foreground,...

Basically, if you can’t make great photographs with any of these cameras, is is not the fault of the camera. There are, however, certain advantages to the Pentax K3, which I find compelling: * it just feels great in your hand – elegant and ergonomic * the lenses, particularly the limiteds, are rugged and indisputably top-of-the-line * the K3 body may be slightly heavier than some, but remember, is it waterproof (well, protected) and rugged; furthermore, the compact and lighter lenses compensate for the body * the lenses tend to be much smaller than those of other makers, so if a...

A little bit dry, but I like both suggestions. Maybe a person to cut to with photography tips while the other talking heads take a break? Composition especially. There are a lot of very well equipped people here who still make very foolish beginner composition mistakes, chopping off hands, subject too small in the center of the frame and unbalanced, untidy framing with little visual interest. Finding good light. Speaking of – lighting too? I don’t know if you’re going to have enough time, but some speedlight education ala Mike Wallace would be awesome too. All we ever talk...

A guest article by Steve McConnell Five photography business mistakes that cost me dearly and how you can avoid them I’ve been toying with an idea of writing an article, in which I share some ideas on how to start a successful photography business. Every time I think about writing it, I realize that I wouldn’t know what to write. I just don’t think that the entrepreneurial journey for an aspiring photographer can be boiled down to a set of step-by-step tips which can fit neatly into a blog post on photography business mistakes There are just too many variables (business nuances,...

A Post By: James Maher A Tree Grows, Chase Bank There is an important idea within street photography to ‘go beyond the ordinary,’ or to capture images that are different from the normal. But what is the process of photographing this way? And why?  What is the point? The idea behind seeing beyond the ordinary is to develop your own way of doing it, and although there are no clear-cut answers or rules to photographing this way, here are some ideas that can help you think about capturing images in a unique way. Find beauty in the story Beauty is not only a visual characteristic.  Try to...

Perhaps, this little camera has shown that megapixels and full-frameness concepts are a bit obsolete when judging how good the camera is… It’s packed with features, and undoubtedly is the best of the “bigger” m43 bodies for stills. Gear of the year title totally deserved. There are 2 places left for Df and A7, again, deserved, – but these two are not universally better cameras after all. E-M1’s IBIS, lenses, speed, controls, combined with A7’s sensor and DSLR-long battery-life would make a perfect MILC – but this day has yet to come. Source Article...

Adobe Password Resets Definite Cause For Concern A guest article by Kevin Yank Note: next week we will be holding a Google+ Hangout on this topic. Please see details below for how to join in. As a digital photographer, you have probably used Adobe software (be it Photoshop or Lightroom) to manage, tweak, or publish your photos at one time or another. If so, chances are you’ve also received an email like this one in the past few weeks: Adobe is sending this message to just about everyone If you’re thinking this might be cause for concern, you’re right. A Post By: Andrew Gibson A few weeks ago I spent seven days travelling across the northern tip of New Zealand’s South Island. Anybody who has been here knows that it is a beautiful place. I often come across remarks by photographers referencing New Zealand as a destination on their list of dream places to go to. Who can blame them? It’s a spectacular country, with beautiful landscapes. However, the road trip brought home something of interest to all landscape photographers – landscape photography is hard. Really hard. Not only do you need a beautiful location, but you are also relying...

The Df seems to be back-focusing. In RAW, the easiest way to see it is by looking at the text in the center “As with you, also with us”. With the other 16 mp APS-C cameras like the X-Pro1, X-M1, K-500, the Canon 700D, and m43 cameras like the GM1 and GX7, even the Nikon 1 J3, that same text is rendered in sharp focus. Only the text from the mis-focused EM-1 RAW files is softer (note: switch EM-1 from ISO 100 to ISO 800, to see the text properly focused with the EM-1). I know that DPR works hard on these Df studio samples, but something is up with the focus accuracy. Source...

A new app for iOS aims to motivate and inspire mobile photographers by merging assignment-based photography with a social media element. In many ways, OKDOTHIS reminds me of social media apps like Instagram or Flickr, but it also feels like a challenge-based photography forum with photographers trying to share their best stuff. Abandoning the hashtag system in favor or categories and “DO” assignments, OKDOTHIS is fun to browse as you see how users interpret the different assignments. Either take a photo or upload one from your photo library. OKDOTHIS has a few filters...

When you buy into a new camera system, it can be tempting to only consider lenses of the same make as your camera. But other lens manufacturers also produce interesting alternatives, some of which provide unique capabilities, or simply excellent quality at a relatively low price. So it can be well worth exploring these offerings too. Who else makes lenses for my camera? The main third party manufacturers are Sigma, Tamron and Tokina, and all three make fully-featured autofocus lenses for SLRs, often including such goodies as ultrasonic-type focus motors, image stabilisation and...

A Post By: Barrie Smith It helps now and then to look around the market and see what’s out there. Occasionally, a downscale camera that has escaped your notice can precisely answer your needs. Successor to the COOLPIX P7700, reviewed only six months ago, the P7800 delivers full-scale manual shooting, with some functions normally available only in DSLRs. Features of the Nikon Coolpix P7800 Zoom lens It has a 7.1x optical zoom that runs a 35 SLR equivalent range of 28-100mm. Sure, it’s not in the same territory as Sony’s 30x zoom model, the DSC-HX50V, nor Canon’s SX50 HS with a...

This is a guest article by photographer Paul Burwell Whenever I teach wildlife photography, I inevitably go on at some length about the necessity of trying to get your camera near the height of your subject’s eyes.  This concept doesn’t only apply to wildlife photography, it applies equally well to photography of people, pets or hobbits.  When I teach this concept to a group of students, their eyes tend to glaze over until I put some images in front of them that can really illustrate the point. Safety first It obviously isn’t always practical or safe to get into a lower shooting...

It is all about varying tradeoffs in Zoom, Price, Image quality, size, and various features. RX100 is great not because of best image quality (RX1 or at least Ricoh BR would win) in a compact, but because it does so at a fairly reasonable price, with good supporting features like video quality, some zoom, good lens, all in a very compact body. Some might prefer that Stylus 1 or whatever with its 300mm zoom range @2.8 aperture, despite its weaker overall image quality and less portability. Source Article from...

Most cameras are delicate objects, and the last thing you want to do is drop them or subject them to wet or freezing conditions. But there are cameras which are specifically designed to handle rough treatment. In this list, we’ve chosen our top five recommendations for tough cameras. Every model in this list can be dropped, soaked, frozen and, in some cases, crushed. Our recommendations cover the entire class, from stylish compacts that can handle the occasional accident to high-end rugged cameras capable of serious image quality. Can you imagine your company having a chief electricity officer? Seems ridiculous doesn’t it, but many large businesses did when electricity first started to power the industrial economy. Electricity is such an integral part of our working life that it is impossible to imagine life without it. Companies just couldn’t operate without power, but it wasn’t always that way. Many business leaders failed to grasp the full potential of electricity after it was first...

A Post By: Andrew Gibson Andrew S. Gibson is the author of Mastering Lightroom Book One: The Library Module, on offer now at SnapnDeals for a limited time. ‘Working the subject’ is an expression often used in photography to describe the process of taking a series of photos of the same subject. The idea is to work your way closer to the ‘perfect’ photo (if there is such a thing) by varying the camera angle, focal length, point-of-view and other factors. As part of the editing process it’s the photographer’s job to select the best images to process. In the old days this meant...

Enthusiast interchangeable lens cameras include both DSLRs and mirrorless cameras. Entry- and mid-level mirrorless are treated in their own categories, while DSLRs at those levels are treated together as “consumer” DSLRs. The enthusiast compacts are presumably divided between the pocketable ones (S120, P330, XZ-10, LF1, RX100, XQ1) and the larger ones (G1 X, G16, P7800, Coolpix A, XZ-2, Stylus 1, LX7, RX1, X20, X100s, GR, MX-1, EX2F, X2, X Vario, DP1/2/3). But I doubt all current models will be included, because the GH3 wasn’t mentioned in the first roundup. Source Article...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt In line with this week’s photography challenge, weather, I want to do a quick survey to see if you shoot in the rain or not. I get a lot of questions from my students about shooting in the rain (or snow, or on the beach) and whether or not it will damage their camera. Of course that depends on the camera body you own (some are weather sealed, some are not – if you aren’t sure read your manual or check the manufacturer’s website), and the precautions you take. Personally, I do get out in the rain and shoot. In fact this was done in the pouring rain in...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt I’ve watched a few of this guy’s videos and I have to say they’re quite funny. If you can’t laugh at yourself, who can you laugh at? This video is by DigitalRev TV, hosted by, as he puts it in his YouTube profile, “an asian dude with British accentâ€. He covers 10 tongue in cheek signs that you might be a photo geek if . . . So, are you?  I’m pretty sure I am but I’m usually the last one to bring a big camera to social events, or any camera at all. So maybe I’m a recovering one? There is hope! Have any other signs you’d add to this list?...
