A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt This week your photography challenge is to capture the weather, good or bad! Â Too many photographers pack up their gear when the weather turn inclement but some of the most spectacular images can be had in less than ideal conditions. I noticed this big thundercloud rolling over the prairies from a shopping mall parking lot. I used the sign in the shot and capture the streaming rays of the last of the sun. Keep in mind weather is ALL kinds of conditions including a lovely sunny day, or a bitter cold winter frost. So wherever you live in the world you do have...

A Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt By John This week I want to give you a little push to get out of your comfort zone. Turn of the television and get outside and shoot – no matter what the weather. As a matter a fact, in spite of the weather is even better! Take your photography up a level Many photographers pack up their gear and head home at the slightest sight of inclement weather. But some of the very best and most dramatic images are to be had if you are willing to brave the elements. Just make sure you are prepared and stay safe. Take the follow precautions: a rain cover for your bag a...

A Post By: Jeff Guyer The Importance of Being or Having a Second Photographer If you have ever done any kind event photography, weddings in particular, you already know how important it is to hire a second photographer. You’re trying to adequately photograph hundreds of people, often in multiple locations in the same venue. You’re good, but you’ve yet to master the finer points of time travel and being in two places at once. Similarly, if you’re still looking for your way into professional event photography, you already know how important it is to be a second photographer. This is...

Enthusiast interchangeable lens cameras include both DSLRs and mirrorless cameras. Entry- and mid-level mirrorless are treated in their own categories, while DSLRs at those levels are treated together as “consumer” DSLRs. The enthusiast compacts are presumably divided between the pocketable ones (S120, P330, XZ-10, LF1, RX100, XQ1) and the larger ones (G1 X, G16, P7800, Coolpix A, XZ-2, Stylus 1, LX7, RX1, X20, X100s, GR, MX-1, EX2F, X2, X Vario, DP1/2/3). But I doubt all current models will be included, because the GH3 wasn’t mentioned in the first roundup. Source Article...

The mobile application development landscape is filled with many ways to build a mobile app. Among the most popular are: native iOS, native Android, PhoneGap, Appcelerator Titanium. This article marks the start of a series of four articles covering the technologies above. The series will provide an overview of how to build a simple mobile application using each of these four approaches. Because few developers have had the...

A Post By: Anne McKinnell Are you stuck in a rut? Have you reached a point where all your photos start to look the same? Feeling uninspired? Or maybe you haven’t gone shooting for a while at all? It happens to us all now and then, kind of like writer’s block. When we get too comfortable with what we do, we get into a routine and everything starts to look the same. This is why it’s important for artists to break out of our own molds from time to time. Prairie Dog, Devils Tower National Monument, Wyoming. To help motivate you out of your photography rut, here are some of the best ways to...

‘Tis the season for giving, but buying for your friends and loved ones can be hard, especially when it comes to photography gear. Smartphones give everyone the chance to be a photographer, whether it’s your otherwise technology illiterate uncle or extremely enthusiastic daughter. But what do you get your friend who #thinks #in #hashtags, the sister who documents the whole little league series with her iPhone or the spouse who is a professional photographer, but enjoys a little smartphone snapping on the side? Here at DPReview Connect, we have you covered. We’ve got...

Nowadays, with any Web app you build, you have dozens of architectural decisions to make. And you want to make the right ones: You want to use technologies that allow for rapid development, constant iteration, maximal efficiency, speed, robustness and more. You want to be lean and you want to be agile. You want to use technologies that will help you succeed in the short and long term. And those technologies are not always easy...

Contribution by Shiv Verma Balancing Exposure Why is an incident meter important for flash photography? How often have you struggled trying to capture a well-exposed portrait in a dimly lit room or hall. All you have is the ambient light and your speedlight. With an understanding of exposure and flash techniques you can learn to successfully balance ambient and flash exposures to create exceptional photographs. Ones that look natural, without the harsh appearance of flash, and without detracting from the ambient light. For the most part, your camera’s meter and exposure evaluation will be...

A Post By: Jeff Guyer What’s the Most Important Part of Photography? Trade Secret flash cards by Nice Industries – lighting tips on the go! If you talk to five different photographers, you’ll get five different answers to the question, “What’s the most important part of photography?†One might tell you proper exposure, while another might insist that it’s composition. Numbers three and four might debate the need to connect with the subject, but as the self-appointed fifth photographer in this roundtable, I’ll have to insist on lighting. Obviously, there is no right answer....

@photo nutsDR and colors issues of EVF are not relevant IMO: you’ll end up with camera DR and colors anyway, not these you see in OVFPersonally, I’m really annoyed with OVF vs final result difference in DSLRs, not to mention the huge difference in OVF’s DOF preview which usually differs too much from the final result. Plus, the DR issue is highly overrated: once you don’t see a subject in shadows, there’s something wrong with your choice: it won’t be seen good enough in final result: you can pull it up in PP, sure, but it won’t look nice anyway...

We’ve also added test data for the Nikon mount version of Sigma’s exception 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM. Also this week, DxOMark has published a review of the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 12-40mm F2.8...

No. Adobe, Apple, Google, Microsoft, in fact every company that takes liberties with your freedom and practices any form of lock-in, will eventually knock themselves out cold, there are safe alternatives out there. The greedier and more manipulative they get, the more people will swarm over to the alternatives. The reason it’ll happen is demonstrated in this thread. The sooner people quit feeding these companies and switch to stuff that is actually there for the consumers benefit, the better. The longer it takes a person to switch, the more it will cost them both in monetry and...

“The bullies at Nikon? Imagine that Nikon wanting to make sure all F-mount lenses work as advertised on their bodies. “ Then they give the communication protocols to Sigma. Your type of thinking is typical of the bureaucratic mind that seems to be prevailing in the West these days, even the UK and US. I agree they aren’t really bullies, just fixated on their short-sighted we-want-it-all business plan. A bit like Fuji and their unwillingness to handover the x-trans processing source code. Self-defeating. Source Article from...

If you had to name one thing that could have been better at the last conference or meetup you attended, what would it be? I bet you’d say that the content or the interaction could have been better in some way. I created Onslyde to solve this problem. It’s a free service and open-source project that (hopefully) will make public speaking easier and conferences better. The motivation for the project came from my own speaking...

A Post By: Jeff Guyer Cards on the table time. Math and I are not friends. Never have been. From those dreaded flash cards in elementary school to my scary geometry tutor in high school, math and I have always been at odds with each other. In college, when it was suddenly optional, I avoided the subject like the plague. Even in my professional life, I’ve managed to get a handle on what I need to know and not much else. Thankfully, this mutual disdain that the mathematical arts and I share, seems to have skipped a generation. My 12-year-old son is doing high school algebra this year, and...

A Post By: Gina Milicia My Portrait Gear Essentials - Images by Gina Milicia What’s the best equipment for taking amazing portraits? I’m often asked what the best equipment is for taking great portraits. Many people assume that a great camera will take great portraits. That is simply not true. A quick scan through Flickr, Instagram or any photo sharing site will reveal thousands of beautiful portraits, some taken on mobile phone cameras, and yet others using very basic entry level equipment. A great photographer can take great photos using any kind of camera. A great camera in...

How Usability Testing Drastically Improved My Client’s App
By Joshua Gross

Most designers spend too much time with their designs to be objective about them. The best thing any designer can do is to collect feedback from real users. Testing uncovers pain points and flaws in a design that are not otherwise obvious. Recently, I had an opportunity to experience this firsthand when iterating on HelloSign, the iOS app that enables users to scan, sign and send documents from their phone using...

A Post By: Valerie Jardin We are living in a time of unlimited free shutter clicks. This is both an advantage, and a disadvantage for you as a photographer. On one hand, the learning curve is faster, easier and definitely a lot cheaper. On the other hand, many photographers have a tendency to shoot without taking much care in their composition and rely on the occasional lucky shot. Stop shooting randomly and start photographing with intent. Before you click that shutter, ask yourself: “What do I want to convey? What story do I want to tell?†There are many ways to achieve this, here are...

A Post By: John Davenport So you have this idea for a photograph where you’ve smoothed out the water on a lake using a long exposure, but want to capture the wildlife swimming on said lake frozen in place – or something similar?  I had that same vision and I’m going to show you how I accomplished it below, so you can follow along. When trying to capture this kind of photograph in a single frame you’re pretty much out of luck. You can either capture a long exposure shot to smooth out the water, OR increase your ISO and capture a shot using a faster shutter speed to freeze your...

Ricoh doesn’t use m43 sensors AFAIK, so that would probably have to be an APS-C camera. Because of the sensor size and the f/2.8-4 you want, that lens would be a LOT bigger than the GM1 zoom … Source Article from http://www.dpreview.com/news/2013/11/20/dpreview-gear-of-the-year-panasonic-lumix-dmc-gm1

After digging into the publicly-available application programming interface (API) for Android 4.4 Kitkat, code-reading sleuth Josh Brown made some observations on his Google+ page. “Looks like Google was working on a new Camera API, but it didn’t make the KitKat release,” he posted, linking to a comment left by a Google developer saying: “DO NOT MERGE: Hide new camera API. Not yet ready.” Ars Technica did some serious digging into the code and found some strong clues as to what Google had in store for the KitKat release. Here is some of the cool stuff...

The Future Of Video In Web Design

Federico was the only other kid on the block with a dedicated ISDN line, so I gave him a call. It had taken six hours of interminable waiting (peppered with frantic bouts of cursing), but I had just watched 60 choppy seconds of the original Macintosh TV commercial in Firefox, and I had to tell someone. It blew my mind. Video on the Web has improved quite a bit since that first jittery low-res commercial I watched on my Quadra 605 back in 7th grade....

A Post By: Andrew Gibson Focal length 21mm, shutter speed 15 seconds. If you’ve been following my articles no doubt you have tried painting with light or using a wide-angle lens for landscape photography. You may have found some interesting ways to exploit the colour contrast between blue and orange and are definitely aware of the magical quality of the light during twilight. Today’s technique brings all these elements together in a way that creates beautiful, dramatic and unusual images. It’s called steel wool spinning. The photos may look complicated but in reality it is easy to try...

A Post By: Darren Rowse Today I’d like to introduce you to the new editor of dPS. But first… a little backstory. The Evolution of dPS Back in 2006 when I started Digital Photography School I did so because I was ‘that guy’ in my friendship circle who friends came to for advice on how to use their digital cameras (and to bring my camera along to every party, wedding and other gathering). Our first day on dps back in 2006. Yes, our first design was ‘Maroon’! While I’d done a few weddings and other paid photography gigs I didn’t consider myself a pro – but wanted to create a...

By Joseph Eckert The idea of taking photographs at night can be counterintuitive to the novice photographer. After all, photography is an art, a craft, a technology that is wholly built on light. Film or digital, it doesn’t matter: we need light to make a photograph—it is as simple as that. Night, of course, by very definition lacks the pervasive light of day, and therefore doesn’t seem like a good time for photography. In the broadest sense, this intuitive understanding of light and its importance to photography is absolutely correct. Night does represent a more challenging time to...

A Post By: Jeff Guyer When I first started in journalism a few lifetimes and two careers ago, a writer had three things to worry about: writing a solid story, getting it in on time, and keeping your editor happy. That was basically it. Today, that list of concerns has grown to include things like keywords, meta tags, headings, titles, internal links, externals links, and– of course– images. It’s almost enough to make someone who typed NBC news copy in the early 80s on a manual typewriter shake his head and abandon all hope of reaching any kind of audience. Since I’m not that...

Lovely to see such famous stretches of Cornish coast, especially Porthcurno taken in 1895, when Rowena Cade was just 2 years old and her incredible outdoor Minack theatre, that would look out on the same view, was just inspiration waiting to create history. 🙂 Not a promotional link, but look at www.minack.com to compare the vistas. Have you ever submitted design files to a development team for production and a few weeks later gotten something back that looks nothing like your original work? Many designers and design teams make the mistake of thinking that their work is done once they’ve completed the visual design stage. A design is more than a simple drawing on a canvas in Illustrator, Fireworks or Photoshop; it is a...

Óscar Monzón’s KARMA has won the First PhotoBook Award in this year’s PhotoBook Awards organised by Paris Photo and Aperture.
The announcement was made at Paris Photo earlier today.Â
KARMA, published by RVB Books, is the culmination of images Monzón took in Madrid between 2009 and 2013 of people in their cars.Â

Portraits of the living legends of blues Since 2008, photographer Lou Bopp has made regular trips down Mississippi’s Route 61 — known as ‘The Blues Highway’ — to document the lives of unknown musicians who have made important contributions to the classic American musical genre. These fellows are either living legends or unknown musicians. I don’t think you can have it both ways. Since I own CDs of most of the Legends of Blues, living or otherwise, I was surprised to see these names mentioned under a title containing the term “Living Legends”. DPR, you...

SEO For Responsive Websites

When Google announced its preference for user-friendly responsive websites in June 2012, I immediately saw an influx of posts that equated responsive design with search engine optimization. This is unfortunate because, while responsive websites can be SEO-friendly, some responsive websites are not. I’ve detailed some of the common errors that give responsive websites problems in search results in an article on Search Engine Land earlier this...

A Post By: Andrew Gibson For decades photographers have faced the question of how to determine which of their images are the best. I’ve been through it all, from squinting at 35mm slides through a loupe on a lightbox, to creating contact sheets from negatives and marking the best with a red marker, to scanning negatives and slides through to the modern version of looking at Raw files on the camera’s LCD screen or in the various programs I have used over the last few years. Of those, there’s no doubt that Lightroom is one of the best for the task of comparing images and selecting the...

Wow, cool cam. >> even smaller than an 1970′ SLR – maybe too small? >>>> Battery charging by USB and in-cam, slowly >>> ?? there are some odd things here, but maybe Nikon and Canon will follow Sony on the way to very compact, light-weight “Full”-Frame DSLRs. (edit: please, not as small as the A7, thank you!) They don’t even have to loose their mirror – I like a good optical viewfinder; and, without an electronic viewfinder, there is less battery consumption! Source Article from...

I really do MISS two things in the new DPR’s comparometer: – nowhere in the scene there is an object of a relatively large, uniform surface, like it was a flat blue face of the watch, and yet with some very firmly outlined and crisp ciphers of the OLD comparometer – the bottle at the bottom can’t replace that blue watch entirely, alas; the new scene is just a wee bit too busy with lots of pretty “talkative” object; – and the ability to compare OLDER cameras with the new ones (this would be easier to rectify, but are there any such plans?); Source...

Casio Japan has announced the EX-10 – a flagship high-end compact with a 1/1.7″ type sensor and a fast 28-112mm equivalent lens. The model, which the company says it will be launching in other markets, features magnesium alloy construction and, like the existing EX-ZR1000, an LCD that flips all the way up, for shooting self-portraits. As usual for Casio, the EX-10 features a range of innovative shooting modes, in this case including a dual...

Well, this way it works with any camera. If you want it to be a client for an existing Wi-Fi network, you need more extensive configuration options in the camera menu. Besides, if the main goal is to transfer stuff onto your smartphone or tablet, this way is the better one, since the other way around would also mean you would create a temporary mobile Wi-Fi hotspot from your phone or tablet – so it’s just in reverse, and more tedious. I’m thinking about taking advantage of the special for the D5200 / 18-140 kit. It’s such a great all around camera and that lens is pricey, but with the $400 instant rebate special, the kit is extremely reasonable. The only thing keeping me from doing it now is the D7100 is so excellent, and the D5300 has added 1080p60, a first for any Nikon. But since IQ is so close on all three bodies, it’s a really tough choice. For the D3200 firmware, if they added 1/3 EV steps to the ISO, it would be a heck of a lot more desirable of a body for me. As it is, I can’t deal with...

Starting a position in an organization, especially if it is your first in the industry, can be as nerve-wracking as it is exciting. Practices that seem like common sense to those of us who have been in the Web industry for some time might not be as obvious to designers and developers without the benefit of our experience. Part of our responsibility as veterans in this industry is to mentor new team members and share with them the...

The Web has succeeded at interoperability and scale in a way that no other technology has before or since. Still, the Web remains far from “state of the artâ€, and it is being increasingly threatened by walled gardens. The Web platform often lags competitors in delivering new system and device capabilities to developers. Worse, it often hobbles new capabilities behind either high- or low-level APIs, forcing painful...

by Lori Peterson No, I am NOT telling you that you should replace your DSLR with your iPhone. So, let’s be clear on that. Having an iPhone thought does give you a new market to tap into and a new perspective on your photography and your style. Just a few short years ago, every client started asking for web sized images to share on Facebook or to email to relatives. Now everyone asks if it’s okay to Instagram their photos. Times are changing for photography and people want to be able to share their photos right away. During a session it is pretty standard that no one else is shooting....

Zooming during a long exposure tips Works well on night scenes and ones with many light sources Set up your camera on a tripod with a remote trigger or release Set your camera to Manual mode Set your focus by zooming in all the way, then lock the focus (using either back button focus or focus using Auto-focus and then switch it off to Manual focus) Zoom out so you can see the whole image as you want it framed...

Samsung’s latest phone-camera hybrid is the Galaxy NX, a rather bold experiment that bolts a high-end Android smartphone to an interchangeable lens camera. With a 20.3 megapixel CMOS sensor and Samsung NX lens mount and a tried-and-true mobile operating system, the Galaxy NX is composed of known quantities — and like other hybrids on the market today, from Sony’s QX lens-cameras to Nokia’s impressive Lumia 1020, it offers plenty of intriguing promise. We got our hands on a pre-production model from Samsung early on, but now we’ve taken a closer look at a...
