An Introduction To DOM Events
By Wilson Page
November 12th, 2013
JavaScript, Techniques, Tools

<!– Advertisement // –> Click, touch, load, drag, change, input, error, resize — the list of possible DOM events is lengthy. Events can be triggered on any part of a document, whether by a user’s interaction or by the browser. They don’t just start and end in one place; they flow though the document, on a life cycle of their own. This life cycle is what makes DOM events so extensible and useful. As developers, we should...

An E-Commerce Study: Guidelines For Better Navigation And Categories
By Christian Holst
November 11th, 2013
Design, E-Commerce, Navigation
5 Comments
Product findability is key to any e-commerce business — after all, if customers can’t find a product, they can’t buy it. Therefore, at Baymard Institute, we invested eight months conducting a large-scale usability research study on the product-finding experience. We set out to explore how users navigate, find and select products on e-commerce websites, using the home page and category navigation....

I’ve talked to several people recently that are building their real estate photography business, and have talked about doing general, non-targeted type marketing. I think it’s worth raising the fact again that as a real estate photographer building your business targeted marketing should be your top priority. Here’s why: Your potential clients (listing agents in a specific geographic area) are easy to find because they are all advertising to their potential clients. You don’t want to waste your marketing time and resources marketing to buyers agents who just want to work with...

A Post By: Jeff Guyer When I quit practicing law ten years ago, I knew I was trading in my briefcase for a camera bag and the courtroom for a studio, but I had no idea that contracts were still going to dominate so much of my time. The importance of the contract between you and your client is pretty much a given, but just as important– if not more– is the model release. If you’ve been shooting professionally for any period of time, you already know (I hope) that securing a model release from the people you photograph is of utmost importance. What you may not be aware of, however, is...

Organised by World Press Photo and Human Rights Watch, the Tim Hetherington Grant was created to celebrate the legacy of the photojournalist who was killed in Libya in April 2011. The grant supports a photographer in completing an existing project on a human rights theme.
French photographer Olivier Jobard won the €20,000 grant for his project Dream of a Rain of Perfume, which “shows the human face of migration,” says World Press Photo in a press statement. “In this project Jobard follows two young Afghan men whose lives are threatened by the Taliban. In...

Yes, that “X100 effect” is nice. I’m coming from a Nikon D90 with a 18-200 mm lens, 35/1.8, 50/1.8 primes, and a few others. Two months ago, I did a review of my past year’s statistics in my Lightroom library, checking for what I shoot with the most. The statistics were pretty stunning: 85% shot with my X100. The few others were mostly where I needed tele range. So I’m thinking of selling all my Nikon gear, and replace it with a m4/3 system with a telezoom and not that much else, maybe a 50mm equivalent prime (Hello there, Leica Summilux 25/1.4) so that I can...

A Post By: Barrie Smith This revised edition of ‘Digital Exposure Handbook’ could well be the only book you’ll ever need in your digital photography adventures. It begins as a guide to understanding camera settings and the basics of exposure, then moves on to putting this info into practice in a variety of situations. It teaches you how to cope with the quality, quantity and contrast of natural and artificial light, how to effectively use on-camera and external flash illumination, how to apply polarising and ND digital filters and concludes by teaching you how to enhance exposures in...

A Post By: John Davenport Before we even get started I should make clear that this is to be used as a last resort effort to save a photograph that can’t possibly be retaken any time soon, not something we should make a habit out of. We all know that the best way to save an underexposed photograph is to simply pay attention to the histogram while taking photos and if it’s pushed all the way to the left adjust our settings and reshoot. Of course with that said, there are cases where it’s impossible to reshoot, or we just forgot to check our settings and get home to realize everything is...

What is the point of these random snapshots done with random lenses? There are already hundreds of superb photographs taken by renowned photographers with this camera that are nothing short of amazing. I believe people buying cameras such as K-3 et al aren’t really interested in snapshots; such galleries are maybe good for pocket compacts, but for top of the line weatherproof DSLRs with 8.3 fps, 24MPs, selectable AA, etc ..? C’mon. Times change, people’s habits change, but DPR’s habits never, it seems. Good old 2004 is still on around here. Source Article from...

by Lori Peterson If I walked into your yard and just started taking photos, would you call the police or would you just ignore it? If you have a studio and I waltzed in with my camera and models and started shooting my latest and greatest session, would you have me removed immediately? Chances are that after initial shock wore off you would be calling the police and asking them to get me out of your studio or off of your property. It might an extreme example, but realistically this is what happens when a photographer brings their client, props, and their camera onto railroad tracks to shoot....

A Post By: Darren Rowse It is time for another reader poll – this time we’re going to talk ‘post production’. Every time we talk about processing images we get a diversity of responses from readers. Some process every image, others some and some never edit any of their images – either because they don’t have the tools, are nervous or don’t believe in it. So we thought we’d ask the question – do you edit or post process your photos? Please tell us about your response in comments below – particularly if you’re in the ‘no’ camp. Source Article from...

DPR seems to be putting up some pretty questionable “news” items lately, like this one. Perhaps they need a separate column for this sort of thing, and the news feed roll can be kept more ….orthodox. Source Article from http://www.dpreview.com/news/2013/11/10/classic-photographs-recreated-in-lego

For me, Canon’s enduring success is that their lenses, so many of them, have such excellent bokeh. That’s not true of Nikon or Sony. Sure, they have one or two but they aren’t as consistent as Canon’s zooms. And zooms are the money lenses. The problem for canon now is that everyone else has caught on to the bokeh dream. And horribly, with cheap aspherics, it’s possible to produce a sharp and bokelicious lens. Hello Fuji, goodbye Canon. Source Article from...

By Annie Tao There are many ways you can photograph newborns, but one thing is for certain: it takes a certain amount of finesse to photograph these tiny little creatures that is beyond an ability to operate a camera and knowledge of photography. ?If you’ve had a baby, then you probably know what I am talking about. Newborns are especially fragile with soft bones and unfused plates in their skull, so moving them around should be done carefully. In fact, I will ask the parents to handle the baby during my Newborn shoots, if I want the baby to be in a different place or position. Newborns...

Really “photography is about light” – photography is about whatever you want. Documentation, art, video, sports, whatever. I love taking great pictures, and am annoyed at having to stare at smart phones/ipads at almost every school event, museum, concert or zoo – but that is what they want and are you going to make all these people care?. One of the largest issue to me with phones is the lens – the wide angle lens is not very flattering to most people. Regarding the DSLR’s that are all around – most people don’t go out of auto, don’t...

A Post By: Darren Rowse By Rilind Hoxha It is going to be a rainy weekend where I live and I’m looking for a photographic project to amuse myself with. One challenge I love setting myself on such weekends when I’m trapped inside is to take an everyday item and to photograph it. Take the humble Pencil. It is something that most households would have… particularly those of us with kids. We probably see them every day – so why not make it the focus of your attention for the weekend. Here’s how 30 other photographers have tackled the challenge of photographing pencils! By Bernat Casero...

A Post By: Darren Rowse At dPS we have a little problem. As of this morning dPS has now published 4109 tutorials since we were founded back in 2006! That’s a lot of photographic learning hidden away in our archives and we’re increasingly aware that many of our readers have not seen some of our most helpful tips and tutorials. As a result – our team has been coming up with some strategies for highlighting some of the gold in our archives and have begun to experiment with some new ways of sharing it. How to See the Best Stuff in Our Archives The most successful experiments so far have...

A Post By: Helen Bradley In addition to being able to send single images from Lightroom to Photoshop for editing you can also send a series of images to Photoshop to assemble into a panorama. This is a useful because the Photoshop panorama merge feature is pretty good (certainly since the improvements in Photoshop CS3 & CS4) and other Photoshop tools such as Content Aware Fill and the Lens Correction Filter are handy for finishing your panoramas. When you are done, click Save and the completed panorama will be sent back to Lightroom for further processing. To see how this is done, begin...

A Post By: Barrie Smith If you hanker for a DSLR and don’t have the budget for a high end full frame camera nor even enough $$$ for an APS-C sized sensor job, look this way… the news suddenly has suddenly got brighter. Most of the early action in mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras was in the area of models that offered viewing only via a rear screen, sometimes with an add on turret finder. But they just didn’t look like a DSLR! Now Sony has come up with an appealing answer to a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera that has the appeal of a DSLR … with maybe a few less bells and...

With the release of Ember.js 1.0, it’s just about time to consider giving it a try. This article aims to introduce Ember.js to newcomers who want to learn about this framework. Users often say that the learning curve is steep, but once you’ve overcome the difficulties, then Ember.js is tremendous. This happened to me as well. While the official guides are more accurate and up to date than ever (for real!), this post is my attempt to...

So compared to the E-P5 the following is worth 1 point I take it? Congratulations DPR, you’ve outdone yourself once again. * E-P5 is more expensive;* E-P5 has no EVF, requiring a $300 add-on;* E-P5 has a major fault: shuttershock;* E-P5 applies focus peaking as an art filter, which reduces the display frame rate, stops the use of other art filters, and is unusable in video (where it’s essential);* E-P5’s video quality is a mess with no 24/25/50/60p (no PAL frame rates);* E-P5 has no electronic shutter;* E-P5 wifi is only usable in iAuto mode (and unlike the GX7, no control...

Beta testing will rarely pick up these things, since beta testers are photographers. Bench tests of durability, like running the shutter for 50, 100, 150K cycles will look for shutter issues. Leaking for dust or moisture will test for that, putting camera in the proper environment. Each test will look for definite aspects. The camera doesn’t have a dust leaking issue, meaning it would not collect outside dust while using it normally (not 2, 3, 5, 10K shutter cycles). The problem was not that “Nikon uses us as beta testers”, it was after it was detected, they were not as...

Killer Responsive Layouts With CSS Regions

CSS, Layouts

As Web designers, we are largely constrained by the layout features available to us. Content placed inside a container will often naturally extend the container vertically, wrapping the content. If a design requires elements to remain a certain height, then our options are limited. In these cases, we can only add a scroll bar or hide the overflow. The CSS Regions specification provides a new option. Support Regions are a new part of the CSS...

A Post By: Helen Bradley Like Photoshop, Lightroom has a History feature that shows a list of the fixes you’ve applied to an image. It can be used to wind back changes that you have made to an image. Unlike the Photoshop history, the Lightroom history entries don’t disappear when you close Lightroom – they remain accessible from one instance of Lightroom to the next. The History panel is on the left in the Develop module. Click to open it and you’ll see a list of the edits made to the image. These read from bottom to top so the topmost history setting is the one you applied last to...

By Annie Tao The business of photography is a complicated matter. I spend hours after each photo shoot culling, processing and sorting the photos to tell the story of the day. From a recent session of one of my own children, I realized that choosing the final photos can be described as a Venn Diagram! One circle represents images photographers love and the other circle represents images clients love. Some images overlap and some don’t. To be successful, you want the largest area to be the one that overlaps: images both photographers and clients love. It is important, however, to be aware...

A review of the Fujifilm XM1 by Ben Evans from www.EnglishPhotographer.com. I knew mirrorless cameras were the future when Fujifilm launched their X-Pro1. Small and light like a Leica but with the practicality of autofocus, it had the image quality to live up to its name. When Fujifilm put the same innovative X-trans sensor in the X-E1 I recommended it over its bigger brother. Well, they’ve just done it again; the new X-M1 has the same amazing sensor in a smaller, lighter, cheaper camera body. Don’t confuse it with the X-A1, which doesn’t have the X-trans sensor. Or with the X100s,...

A Guest submission by Matt John Robinson The First Stranger Taking the portrait of a person whom you’ve just met moments before is one of the most exciting—and in the beginning, unnerving—experiences you can have as a photographer. It’s also one of the most rewarding. The 100 Strangers Project sounded simple enough: gather 100 portraits of complete strangers after getting their consent. For my mostly introverted self, this meant more precisely: interact with 100 human beings I would otherwise never interact with…AND take their photograph. The prospect seemed filled with anxiety....

Nikon is the genius, the trend-setter, the leader.. if not for Nikon, Canon’s IDX would be retailing for $10K!!!! f;ing nuts you f’ers. Now Nikon creates the “retro” camera… “Camera”… not a video thinger… Though many may argue that they are the same, they are spectators, don’t know the real crap… Nikon is truly re-defining “photography” again… not dropping the challenges that video plays, but obviously challenging “photography” back into it’s origins. Bravo Nikon! You still rule! You know...

I didn’t think the DÆ’ was going to be reasonably afforadble for me -and it’s not c’est le guerre. However I did not expect it to be so down spec’d. I assume as DPR apparently does, that Nikon is jumping on the retro bandwagon to try and generate some actual turnover. That’s great. But I think they missed the fundamental point which is the the EM-5 especially and the XPro-1 actually bought something to the party other than a lick of silver paint and a vague resemblance to the cameras of old. There was a discussion about this in the M43 forum. As far as I can...

Inspiration strikes at funny times. Chris Behr was just watching TV and playing around with the Shape tools in Illustrator. His mind wasn’t focused on either task. Thus, Nice Things was born, a set of 128 original, beautiful...

A Post By: Andrew Gibson If you read my articles about long exposure photography and intentional camera movement in the landscape you may have noticed a common theme amongst the photos illustrating the articles – most of them were in black and white. I’ve been thinking about the reasons that black and white photography appeals to me. Regular readers of my articles will know that I’m a big fan of tonal contrast in both colour and monochrome work. I use it as the basis of many of my compositions and it helps me create atmosphere and mood. But things became clearer today when I read an...

A Post By: Barrie Smith Welcome to Mark II of the Sony Cyber-Shot RX100, a neat, surprising camera that could sit happily alongside an upper level snapper (like a DSLR) in the camera bag. Unsurprisingly, it is priced at the upper level of compact digicams. It has a reasonably fast Carl Zeiss f1.8, 3.6x optical zoom, imaging to a 20.2 million pixel CMOS, enabling the capture of a maximum image size of 5472×3080, leading to a 46x26cm print. Video can be captured in AVHCD or MPEG4, up to a Full HD 1920×1080 pixel resolution. Yes, you can shoot still shots in the middle of a video recording...

A Post By: Jeff Guyer I’ve been thinking quite a bit lately about the creative process. When we talk about “creativity,†people generally end up putting themselves into one of two categories– creative or not creative. I’m always amused– and a bit leery– when people who consider themselves creative say that they have no creative process. That ideas “just come†to them. I’m not buying it. I can’t help but ask if ideas really do just come to them, or have they refined and streamlined their process to the point that they don’t even recognize it as a process? And if there...

The newest versions of Apple’s tablets go on sale today. The iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina display both offer improved processing power of their predecessors, but what apps will you want to run on that fast A7 chip? If you already use an iPad in your photography workflow, let us know about your favorite tablet apps in the comments. 1. Photoshop Touch; $9.99 Even though Photoshop Touch can be used on...

If this this isn’t too expensive I look at it as a great opportunity to get the D4 sensor that is in a $6k body for half or less than that price. I don’t need the insane ruggedness or 10fps of the D4, but I could certainly use the best low light performing sensor on the market today. Sure they’re probably reusing tech, but it’s not like they’re throwing a D80 sensor into a $3k body or anything. Not saying I’ll be getting one for sure until I get more details, but I think people are quick to put this camera down for a number of ridiculous reasons without...

Staged:-split second timing which would be nearly impossible to duplicate even in a studio setting, by hand [no triggers], without the pressure of being under enemy gunfire and getting your camera hand blown off, in one take. -the soldiers face, a major point of interest, falls EXACTLY at a “rule of thirds” intersection despite the camera being aimed with an awkward, over the head grip, with NO viewfinder use to compose such accuracy. -no camera blur, subject blur, full frame focus, good exposure, no visible gunshot wound [not that there has to be, but seeing it would add to the...

A Post By: Andrew Gibson If there was ever a subject and a lens made for each other, then it is the wide-angle lens and the landscape. Wide-angle lenses are ideal for landscape photography: They have more depth of field at any given aperture setting and camera to subject distance than telephotos. It is simple to stop down and obtain front to back sharpness. The perspective of the wide-angle lens draws the viewer into the image and adds a sense of depth by making the horizon seem further away than it really is. You can see the effect in this landscape taken with a zoom lens set to a focal...

1/4000 th fastest speed, a big bulk body, just any Nikon DSLR with a flat oldie style top. I do not know what is so exciting in this camera. Most that watched the teasers where awaiting a real FM2 sized copy in digital. Now, look Sony A7, 24mpix, 1/8000th, video, mirrorless, light, handsome, and less than 1700 for the body. Now, I wait for a price of 1400$ for this body, it’s not worth a cent more. But, as we know Nikon…… they dig their own grave with there pricing policy. This camera must sell same price as the A7 body, lens included, thus some 1700$. If they sell it...

These type of photographs, however famous, and however famous the photographer – and Capa, along with Doisneau and Burke, just to name a very few was surely and rightly one of the best ever – should only be used as a monument against war . In that context, it’s of lesser interest whether staged or not, we all know that wars aren’t staged, they’re real. Please- no likes. Leave this just as is. Source Article from...

Hello DP-review It would be nice if the RAW – Day-Light shots from the EM-1 from ISO100 to ISO400 can be reshot. They are clearly out of focus. From ISO800 the shots are sharp. Look feathers at upper right corner, or blue colourtube in upper left. And the RAW Low-Light shot ISO12800 of the EM-5 is defect. The lower part of the picture is missing. Also it would be nice if the Pentax K5IIs and K3 is allowed to join game. They are, imho, the closest competitors to the GM1/GX7 and EM-1. Often only 2 choices in the compare screen are selectable. It would also be nice if the normal shown 4...

Introduction The Sony Xperia Z1 was launched in September at the IFA consumers electronics trade show in Berlin and replaces the Xperia Z, which itself was only launched at CES in January as Sony’s top-of-the-line smartphone. The new model comes with the same impressive build-quality and waterproof body as its predecessor and with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 processor and a 5-inch 1080p screen, the Z1 offers top-end specs all around....

Selling Responsive Web Design To Clients

Designing and developing websites that work well on mobile devices is an important aspect of the work we do on today’s Web. This importance is reflected in the conversations I have with clients, almost all of whom list “support for mobile devices†as one of their top goals for a redesign — all except one, that is. Late last year, I began a redesign project for a company that sells pressure-treated lumber products. Early on in our...

A Guest Post by Lithuanian Photographer Tadas Naujokaitis. Bird photography is quite difficult because birds don’t do what a photographer wants. Moreover, it’s often hard to get close to them. And when you have more experience in photography, you realize that it’s even more difficult to take a good bird photo, because you need a good background and a beautiful environment. However, there are a number of ways you can improve the bird photos you take. In this article, I’ll explain some tips on photographing birds near feeders. The place The place is the first thing you need to...

Forget all the features, did Canon improve the image quality/image sensor? Nope. It’s a good camera to skip based on that alone, same for the Pentax K3. The Sony A77 is one I passed on and being a Sony shooter, it was a huge let down. I guess it can be forgiven because the A77 has so much tech packed into it. And while I passed on the high ISO issue alone, it does have that amazing dynamic range. Another flop, like the Nikon D7100 or D5300, lots of extra pixels nobody was asking for trying to catch up to Sony, and did nothing to improve Canon’s current APS-C situation, which...

Well done, Shawn, some great portraits there, thank you. The happy couple with the camera on the horse drawn cart is lovely, also the rider in the stable door. Wonderful cameras with significant weaknesses built-in by design, mainly lack of in body OIS and global shutter. And a system built to require expensive lenses for AF with a very limited choice of mainly slow ones on offer so far, and no normal lens with OIS. AF via adapters is slow. Wonderfully detailed images even from the A7, great colours, no noise at base ISO, great dynamic range. Although it looks like they largely succeeded in...

audijam: You can make any comment you want about the jpeg engine (or out of camera jpeg IQ), but you commented on the general IQ of the camera. It’s a false claim to say that only those who make money with photography shoot raw. That’s like saying the only people who had darkrooms did photography for money. If Sony kicked ass, then Samsung and LG wouldn’t be destroying Sony’s flat screen TV business. Right, Sony makes some good image sensors and good pro-video cameras, and some good still cameras. Your defense of Sony is a bit ironic, given that clearly Sony isn’t using the...

A Post By: Rick Berk This shot was taken just after a January snow storm. The ice glistening on the dune grass made for an excellent foreground while the lighthouse towered in the background. A polarizer was used to help darken the sky. Taken with the EOS 5D Mark II and EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II. ISO 100, 1/250 at f/16. Living on the east coast of the United States, I have easy access to any number of beaches to use as subjects for my photographic purposes. While many of these beaches may not be as dramatic as those on the west coast, they offer many photographic opportunities and shouldn’t be...
