learning photography from 0, I mean zero of anything photography related (camera phone, webcam, etc.)Really had no idea what aperture, ISO, shutter, etc. was. Still remember the time around April 2011, bought my 1st camera ever, Fuji HS20. Thought it was so great (got lots of hope). 2.5 years later after tens of thousands of exposures of various digital cameras and thousands of pages of photography literature (electronic & paper), yet I am still learning. Nikon does provide great imaging tools, but Canon that really helped me learning manual mode easily & quickly, maybe it’s...

That’s a good and relevant point. Until the cost to the public at large becomes an issue, I don’t see that changing any time soon. At least until sea levels rise a little more 😉 Great photographs like these will as usual help to document the conditions. Not a model for the east coast of course, but I am reminded of the town of English, Indiana. After suffering some disastrous floods, the townspeople looked up and said, ‘Hey–you know, this is silly. There is some high ground just over there. Why don’t we just move the dang town to a location that makes more...

You know, when we’re on a press trip like this, we spend a lot of time on the bus. When we get off, we’re hustled through whatever thing it is they’ve given us to photograph and then herded back on the bus. I stood patiently taking representative photographs quite often with three cameras: the RX10, the A7R and the A7. Many of them will repeat as we post galleries from the other two cameras. I had PR people hustling me and others along, while we tried to capture more meaningful images. When I say ‘representative,’ I mean shots that show what the camera can do in...

In this article, we’ll explore how to use Grunt in a project to speed up and change the way you develop websites. We’ll look briefly at what Grunt can do, before jumping into how to set up and use its various plugins to do all of the heavy lifting in a project. We’ll then look at how to build a simple input validator, using Sass as a preprocessor, how to use grunt-cssc and CssMin to combine and minify our CSS, how to use HTMLHint to make sure our HTML is...

Editor’s Note: To really appreciate the beauty of Rodrigo’s pelagic photography, make sure to pick up a copy of the latest Scuba Diver- Through the Lens.
By Rodrigo Friscione If you’re an animal lover, pelagics are the ultimate goal: Nothing compares to facing a wall of silky sharks, being checked out by a grey whale or swimming side by side with a Great White.
Chasing after pelagic wildlife life is extremely exciting and also very demanding physically. Subjects are usually big animals, which makes them fast and elusive. The pursuit being as thrilling as getting...

A Post By: Jeff Guyer It’s a little past 4:00 a.m. and I just finished watching all three hours of the just-released Fro Knows Photo Beginner Flash Guide. A lot of photography-related books and videos come across my desk, and my favorites are always those that have something to offer not only the beginner, but the advanced photographer as well. This is absolutely one of them. In this follow-up video to his Fro Knows Photo Beginner Guide, Jared Polin (the aforementioned Fro) leads you on an off-camera flash adventure, taking you from hopelessly intimidated to supremely confident in a...

A Post By: Anne McKinnell The moon is something so familiar to us, and yet so strange that it’s mesmerizing. It’s at once commonplace and extraordinary. As photographers, we are drawn to it in an attempt to convey the intrigue we feel when we look at it. But moon photography can be tricky. A bright full moon creates one of the most high contrast situations there is, posing a difficult challenge for photographers. Often photos of the moon appear like a spotlight in the sky that looks more like the sun than the moon. Moon Photography Tips To get the best possible pictures of our...

“The FZ200 is no more premium than the SX50, P510 or Sony HX200/300” Have You used them all? I personally owned FZ200 and have chance to actually use Sony HX200 and Nikon P520 for longer time, co I will not speak here about Canon, as I did not used it. FZ200 is great camera, all the options, manual controls, RAW images, 1080@60p (not i) 720p@120p, three definable FN buttons, ISO button, fast and accurate autofocus system, the FOCUS button (with semi manual focus), WHITE BALANCE button and on and on. Olympus has thrown its hat into the premium superzoom ring with the Stylus 1. It combines a larger-than-average 1/1.7″-type BSI-CMOS sensor with a 28-300mm equivalent, F2.8 zoom lens, high resolution EVF, ‘hybrid’ control ring, and Wi-Fi – and packs it all into a compact body that strongly resembles the OM-D EM-5. Other notable features include a built-in ND...

It has one thing that Sony RX10 does not have, and it has not one thing that Sony RX10 has. The first is, it has a correct price, the second is an acceptable sensor size, Sony has a correct sensor size and a horrible expensive price, and here it is just the other way around, acceptable price and a horrible sensor size. In some way, both cameras are just to forget, unless you want a correct priced camera and you take the disadvantage of the small sensor, or you take a better sensor and take in account the horrible price to pay for it. There is a third choice, forget them both, and I think...

What makes Olympus a non attractive gear is the 4/3 sensor. Yes, you might say that it is proper to Pana and OLy, we all know that. But, me, as an advertized photographer since more than 50 years now, will never buy it, it can be as good as it can be. The GX7 is a dream camera in functionallity, but I wait to see such a camera with an APS-C sensor, or even a FF sensor. Sony has made the A7, but the viewfinder position is not what I expected. They have done it in right position in the NEX-6&7, Pana has shown us the optimal way to do it on GX7, and Sony puts it in the center, conform to...

Could have been another 12 for all I know and it just looked different to me. I’m always amazed at how people always grab some tiny detail and hang their entire argument on it. The point is not the nomenclature, but the camera itself. The times that I’ve used G’s, I have found the image to be really good, the quality solid, the controls very good and the only thing that I didn’t like that much was the size and, naturally, the shutter lag. People are willing to pay $200 or more for the rebadged Lumix under the Leica badge when they are clearly inferior: long lags, slow...

A Post By: Jeff Guyer We all know that dust on a DSLR sensor can range anywhere from the mildly annoying to downright problematic. You can try avoiding it, but the simple, unfortunate truth about sensor dust is that regardless of how careful you are, onto every sensor some dust will fall at some time. The closest you might come to avoiding it would be if you were to put a prime lens on your camera when it’s brand new and never change it or take it off. Ever. We all know that’s not about to happen, so dealing with dust becomes a critical part of regular camera maintenance. Part of...

A Post By: Jeff Guyer Of all the portrait lighting tools at our disposal, none are quite as versatile as the the five-in-one reflector. The concept itself is extremely basic. In the hands of a photographer comfortable with common lighting principles, the reflector helps us bounce light into or onto those areas that aren’t getting enough light, regardless of whether we are using natural, ambient, or studio/strobe lighting. A reflector placed directly opposite a main light can act as a hair light, creating separation between the subject and background. Placed in front of a back-lit...

BTW, regarding the 1020’s preferring choosing higher ISO’s and, at the same time, a bit overexposing images: – as I’ve pointed out several times (back in September too – see my Sony Z1 comparison), at ISO 400, there isn’t as destructive NR as at ISO 800. – the 1020 tens to over-expose images, which is certainly visible in this case too. Therefore, if you manually lock ISO at 400 (max.) and possibly also shutter speed (not to allow the phone to introduce motion blur), you can let the camera under-expose (or, for that matter, properly expose) the...

My opinion of this work vacillates to and fro like the pastie tassels of an exotic dancer; and this is not without some pleasure – it has caused me to reflect upon my own sensibilities and assumptions. That said, I tend to think over-processing can drown out nuance, and HDR and similar techniques may well be the faux-wood paneling of our time. Still, I try to generally see technique as successful (or not) based upon what I extract to be the concepts underlying the work. There seem to be many comments directly stating or implying some expectation, a directive, of urbex. Perhaps there is...

Reply to Edgar Matias: Re: Today’s Sony isn’t the same 100% agree. Sony, like the majority of Japanese consumer electronics firms, has lost the edge. Numerous reasons, not necessarily branding issues – emergence and technological advancement of lower cost economies, industrial standardization, product/industry life cycle, patent expiry, obsolescence of key products, lower barriers to competitors’ entry, consumer literacy, etc. Re: Sony Walkman (I miss making and playing personal ‘best of’ tapes, don’t you?) Those are pictures. You may, or you may not, like them. That is just fine. It is every ones right to have an opinion, and in the free parts of the world it is also every ones right to voice it. It is also reasonable to question why DPReview shows them, if that is what you think. It might even be reasonable to question why the photographer spends time doing those (in your opinion) lousy pictures. But the posts here go way beyond that. It is pure hate, against the art form and the photographer personally. “He should not be allowed to touch a camera again” – etc, etc, etc,...

@ victor….An excellent point. In fact, I believe most consumers reaction to the sony brand to be very positive. They make excellent televisions and audio equipment and that’s how most people know the brand who aren’t familiar with their photography products. By comparison, many know canon as an office equipment company as well as photographic, whereas Nikon, Olympus, and Fuji are primarily perceived as photography-only equipment. Once again, photo equipment “enthusiasts” (aka gear heads) need to remember that their perception of brand differential isn’t...

I can’t believe people are coming on here to derail the article with trash-talk about a characteristic of these photos which is ENTIRELY subjective. The foundation of art is creativity, and respect for the artist. If you do not enjoy the art, kindly.. leave the room and close the door behind you. Some of these comments almost warrant a “who the __ are you?” retort. I’m sick of looking at these features only to have it spoiled by what seems to be the majority here.Having said all of that… I think the most frightening aspect of these images is the shadow of the...

I left Nikon before D700 came out, and I steped over to Fuji and the S5, later to Sony, and unless there will be changes in Nikon policy, service, and specially pricing on their top models, I do not go back. When I see at what price they sell a D4 and if I compare it to a D7000 and higher series, I ask myself by what they want to justify the price they ask for the D4. 1150$ for the 7200 body opposed to 6000$ for a D4 body. So, tell me where they have hidden that 4850$ of material they ask for if I compare both cameras? Sony A77 compared to A99, was a difference of 120%, not 420%, and I...

There is an inherent attraction in nostalgia. But we shouldn’t confuse it with meaningful progress. If there is one thing that has put photography “in my hands again”, it’s been going digital. Taping up my back LCD to “relearn” photography – why would I do that? It tells me right on the spot, if I have nailed a particular shot or not. I gives me access to all the major camera settings in one place. Don’t get me wrong, I usually use my 100-percent-coverage OVF for framing. And ergonomics do matter. Back in the film days, I sometimes played with...

A contribution by Dan Bailey – author of the eBook Zen Photographer (currently 13% off at SnapnDeals here). What if you could predict the future? Wouldn’t that make you a much better photographer? Think about it: Photography is largely about capturing the moment. Not just any moment, though. We’re talking that singular instant when light, expression, movement and environment all converge in one significant fraction of a second. That’s when the dirt’s flying, the action’s peaking and that ray of golden sunlight is turning your subject into a hero. If you knew exactly when that...

For a Nikon D300S and Sigma 180 macro, I found this rig to be insufficiently sturdy and went with the Manfrotto 055XB. Heavy yes but I stop so often to take pictures that it is not really noticeable. I use the Manfrotto 3275 Gear head (replaced by 410jr). Tripod and head weigh 126 oz (7 lbs 14 oz) or 3.6 kg. While the light Manfrotto ball heads lack stiffness and security, I found the 498 to be both sturdy and secure. There is a safety catch on the release lever so that it takes 2 hands to remove the camera. Though, this is a heavy head, it compares favorably against heads costing twice as...

Since thousands of years, people venerate and pray to something they even ignore all about, nor do they what it is, or could be, they pay for it and for those who represent this unknown being or thing, and those laugh and live like kings on the fool’s expense, those fools who listen to their stories and get enslaved by them. That “thing” is called GOD. Now, here we see something we can get without a lambleather pouch, and without a red dot for much cheaper. But since the red dot, is a religion and those who are brainwashed by it will never accpet any critics, why should we...

Dubble is a new community-based photography app for iOS with lomo flair. Dubble takes the concept of double exposures — either a trick or a mistake in which photographers expose a roll of film twice, thereby layering two images in a single frame — and applies it to your smartphone, with a crowdsourcing twist. Users submit “singles,” images imported from your Camera Roll or captured using the in-app camera, which are randomly paired with another “single” to create a double exposure, or “dubble.” We’ve been playing with a beta version of the...

Responsive images are one of the biggest sources of frustration in the Web development community. With good reason, too: The average size of pages has grown from 1 MB to a staggering 1.5 MB in the last year alone. Images account for more than 60% of that growth, and this percentage will only go up. Much of that page weight could be reduced if images were conditionally optimized based on device width, pixel density and modern...

A Post By: Jeff Guyer In landscape photography, just as in portraits, fashion, products, or any other subject matter, accurate color capture is crucial. What makes it so much more difficult with landscapes, however, is the wider disparity in dynamic range, not only between foreground and background elements, but primarily between the upper and lower halves of the frame– between the earth and the sky. If you are into shooting landscapes, overcoming this hurdle will require you to have one of two filters (if not both) in your arsenal, even if you don’t use filters in any of your other...

By: Oded Wagenstein There is no doubt that using natural light in portrait photography can get you the best results. However sometimes, as you all probably know, natural light does not do what he’s told. So here comes into action what I like to call my secret weapon in outdoor Portrait Photography. It is cheap, easy to carry and especially does not frightens my subjects, who themselves can be a little intimidating at times. Reflector  It is just that! It reflects light. There are hundreds of different types of reflectors, which differ in sizes and colors (i.e. white, silver, gold,...

Please, do feel free to go, but how about keeping the noise down as you leave, no need to be loutish about it! And no need to justify your decision to us, if Aperture doesn’t do what you want, then perhaps it’s your time to fly. But it is a bit strange, after all, the product still does all the great things it did when you bought it. It’s had loads of new features added for free. It gets regular bug fixes as bugs get reported and squished. And the raw camera updates continue to flow, and not rushed out but done to the high standard users have come to expect, with support...

Today, I’m going to take a closer look at the Grid View (part of the Library module) and show you how to customise the display. If you’re not in Grid view, just press the ‘G’ key. It’s a keyboard shortcut that will take you to the Grid view from any part of Lightroom. The Grid View displays thumbnails of photos contained in the currently selected Folders, Collections or search results. Here, I used the Shift+Tab shortcut to remove the...

Learning to use Photoshop can be overwhelming to some people. There are so many functions and so many tools that it can seem like you will never really understand how to use it. You search online for videos and tutorials, but even then, depending on your version of Photoshop you still may feel lost. When photographers discover actions for Photoshop it’s sometimes like hitting the photography jackpot. They speed up your workflow. You can get more done. You can achieve different effects with them, but sometimes other photographers will tell you that it’s basically cheating in Photoshop....

A Post By: Rick Berk A small cascade at Kaaterskill falls in upstate New York. It’s important to balance the long shutter to blur the water, with the need for keeping the foliage sharp. While blending two exposures will accomplish this, I preferred to try and capture the scene in one exposure. Exposure was 1/3 second, f/22, ISO 100. EF 14mm f/2.8L II with EOS 5D Mark III. While the northeastern Unites States isn’t a wealth of dramatic vistas ripe for the landscape photographer’s choosing, one thing we do have plenty of here are waterfalls. The list is endless- from Niagara Falls in...

This isn’t a case of jumping on the Hassy trend, Ricoh has a long history of producing special editions of their GRs using alternative finishes, some of them truly truly ghastly. But it’s just an extra option to their regular stuff, and they’ve been doing it so long they must have some sort fan-base for the practice. I suspect many of you are only just noticing Ricoh since the APS-C GR (or perhaps the Pentax take-over). A Post By: Helen Bradley In a post last year I explained a process for exporting images from Lightroom (http://digital-photography-school.com/output-from-lightroom-to-your-blog) sized and all ready for posting to a blog. Since then I discovered a more robust solution to the problem of outputting images using a custom print layout from Lightroom. This can be used when printing images or saving them as jpeg files. The process of preparing and outputting images can be simplified by taking advantage of the Single Image/Contact Sheet Layout in Photoshop and combining this with a print collection....

These full frame, interchangeable cameras come in a compact body with lots of features and the initial hands on reviews being published from around the web say that they are going to be really popular. I’ve seen a lot of DSLR owners say that they’re pre-ordering these cameras already and it has made me wonder – what would it take for me to switch from one camera system to another? News about the new cameras breaks elsewhere, I read about all these new cameras on other sites, samples appear in other places first – there are sample available for most of these cameras now but none on DPReview, other than links posted in the forums. Also hands-on video reviews that give a much deeper insight than the first impressions articles which seem to be the fixture for most cameras, many popular models never being reviewed. I’ve...

Perhaps the title should be “Can Slim filters damage your lens?”. Avoiding an el-cheapo deluxe generic filter on your high-grade lenses is excellent advice. But the article only finds tiny instance of budget “Slim” filter as the cause of front element damage. Aren’t wide angle lenses the only ones that even require “slim” filters? So for most other lenses it would follow that a reasonably priced multi-coated Hoya UV (non-slim mount) filter will pretty much do exactly the same thing as a $150 Heliopan or B&W UV. “we suspect only a minority of photographers will see them as anything more than frivolous novelties, used once or twice then consigned to the closet or recycled on fleaBay. Even so, they can be fun to play with occasionally, if only to help refresh your way of looking at the world if your photography is getting stale.” That’s a bit harsh, even uncalled for! People who buy them will use them, with the low price and 10% discount offer for 3 lenses that take filters and T mode you can hardly go wrong.Lomography and “alternative” lenses have a strong following...

He did go back and found her as an adult, and was able to take pictures of her grown up, along with her husband. She obviously had no idea her child’s face was iconic. It is a powerful image ! First of all, sorry for my English, this is not my first language, hope my point is understendable anyway. Hope you guys are joking. This work is wonderful! The author didn’t want to show misery and pain (although “It’s a hard life,†he says). People in the pics are no traditional gypsies, but a tribe that CHOOSE to live this way. It’s more about lifestyle than about etnical heritage. In fact he refers to they subjects as “Dickensian punks, who travel the English countryside in horse-drawn caravans”. Quoting the author ” a group of rag-tag teenage rebels who...

A Post By: Barrie Smith The MILC models keep rolling out Panasonic’s door. Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Cameras still appear to have flavour of the month gloss, so Panasonic as well as Olympus are keen to milk every drop from the technology. This one is especially attractive, although it does appear you will have to pay for the ‘smarts’ in the camera as it leads the G Series in imaging capability. The review camera was fitted with the G Vario f3.5/14-42mm kit lens. The body is made from magnesium alloy and the camera is available in silver+black or black. Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX7...

A Post By: Darren Rowse Over on our Facebook page this week we shared our recent ‘Small World‘ post featuring some of our readers shots of miniature figurines shot in larger scenes. On Facebook one of our readers – Dave Flynn – commented that he used to take these types of photos but now does something different. He shared a link to his Mini Worlds Gallery where he showed his different take on it. It includes this photo! I immediately shot Dave a message asking if he’d write up how he took it. Here’s what he sent in. My name is Dave Flynn, I’m 45 years old and got into...

Nice pics really, more like Benetton advertising campaign than documentary photos, and ten years for this is really too much.Maybe a look at Josef Koudelka photos could help.Very beautiful pics, this is my favorite style. ‘democratic world where beautiful people of any color, race or sex can be depicted in a photograph as long as they are also young’ Not so democratic for those outside current perceptions of ‘beauty’ and youth. Well, as a not so good looking and ageing hippie, I guess I’ve had my day and should step aside now. ;{) Source Article from...
