Thinking Inside The Box With Vanilla JavaScript

HTML, JavaScript, Techniques

During the past four or five years of blogging regularly and doing research for other writing projects, I’ve come across probably thousands of articles on JavaScript. To me, it seems that a big chunk of these articles can be divided into two very general categories: jQuery; Theory and concept articles focused on things like IIFEs, closures and design patterns. Yes, I’ve likely stumbled upon a ton of other articles that...

A Post By: Darren Rowse Late last year I was giving a copy of celebrity portrait photographer Brian Smith’s book – Secrets of Great Portrait Photography: Photographs of the Famous and Infamous. It was a great read and one that gave me load of ideas for my own portraiture. Today I was surfing on YouTube and came across a great lecture that Brian Smith gave at B&H Photo that really is a great walk through of the book and many of the tips in it. While long – the video is really useful on many levels. The video goes for almost an hour and a half so grab yourself a beverage and snack...

By Lori Peterson Recently I came across a photography page and the photographer’s About Me said “I specialize in everything photography.†I couldn’t help but wonder how many other people had stumbled across that particular page and dismissed it because they wanted someone who had a more defined photographic specialty. When you are looking for a photographer to capture images of your newborn, family, or senior, aren’t you looking for someone who really knows how to take images that really grab your attention? Photographers spend so much time trying to figure out what their style is...

On the long list of apps that have used iOS 7 as an excuse to get a face lift, photo hosting service Loom is going above and beyond. This photo organization app is fairly new on the scene but it is already turning heads and getting a plenty of positive reviews. Loom’s latest update has improved its user interface to better reflect iOS 7’s new aesthetic and also allows for RAW photo uploading. Loom lets users upload photos from either its Mac or iPhone app. While the photos will remain untouched on the server, when users want to view the RAW files on their mobiles, Loom...

A Post By: Barrie Smith Again, another large format book, sized precisely to best show off the subject matter. As befits this subject, the pictures get priority and so they should … text takes the back seat but not to a demeaning degree. Author Peter Watson is a self-taught photographer and has authored five other books, all to do with landscape photography. In his view ‘recent developments in digital technology have simplified landscape photography.’ Perhaps this could have been better said as the arrival of digital photography has simplified landscape photography. How so? Well, for...

A Post By: Barrie Smith You never know in this reviewing game: one day it’s a DSLR, then a MILC, rapidly followed by a compact camera. Each with its own attractions, each with its own foibles … but few that really break convention very much. Then, suddenly, the door bangs open and in comes a crazy, ground-breaking innovation. Is it a pack of cards, ciggies or business card holder? NOTA: none of the above! It’s Canon’s entry into the fashion world of desirable gadgets. Canon Powershot N Features Gone is the usual myriad of external controls. Absent are cascading viewfinder menu...

The Ten Commandments Of Efficient Design In Axure
By David Morgan
October 4th, 2013
Ideation, Tools, Usability

Axure is a powerful tool for creating software prototypes quickly. Getting started with it is really easy; however, therein lies a danger. The tool is so intuitive that many users can be productive without undergoing any formal training. What they might not be aware of is that they probably aren’t using Axure optimally. In my experience as a UX designer, I seldom draw a page and get it right the first time. Most of the time, I...

A Post By: Jeff Guyer I teach a kids photography class (ages 11-15), and this week we started talking about composition. I don’t require a specific type or level of camera, so I have students shooting with DSLRs, as well as students with simple point-&-shoot models. Because of the wide range of cameras, I make this class a little less about the technical and a little more about how they see the world around them. I strive to make sure they understand the elements of exposure, the principles of lighting, and all of the other aspects of the craft that come into play when they push the...

A Post By: John Davenport There’s truly nothing like visiting a location for the first time – I absolutely love it and I strive to always photograph at least one new location a month. When I started on my photography journey this wasn’t a hard challenge to meet as even my own backyard was new to me and my camera, but as time went on things got a bit more difficult. New locations became ‘go-to’ spots and there came a point where I was only photographing at places that I had previously visited. While I’d love to travel the world on a whim I just don’t have the means or time to do...

A Post By: Darren Rowse Quite a few months ago we started the process of redesigning Digital Photography School. For some time we’ve wanted to freshen up of the site as it’s been a couple of years since we last did (and the web has changed a lot since then!). Our first port of call was to get your feedback on what you’d like to see – your feedback was great and we’ve put a lot of it into place (with more still to come). If you’re reading this post and everything has gone to plan you’re hopefully seeing the the result! We are still putting a few finishing touches on this design...

Yeah, as soon as I got my D7100, I noticed it brought out the worst in some of my lenses. The previously regarded “very sharp” Nikon 50mm F/1.8D turned into mush (the 1.8G is supposedly superior). My Tokina 11-16mm F/2.8 moved down to just being very good, but was still lacking. The Nikon 35mm F/1.8 was getting there, though. The sharpest two lenses I have are the Nikon 17-55mm F/2.8 and 80-200mm F/2.8D ED. Stopped down to F/4-5.6, they’re razor sharp, showing each individual hair on a dog’s head, or every letter on a car’s tire. The 17-55mm is especially...

Image Shake / Shutter Shock. I’ve had the EM-5 for over a year now and it’s a fantastic balance between size and performance. Shutter shock was also a widely discussed topic when the EM-5 came out. The ‘fix’ on the EM-5 is to engage Anti-Shock from custom menu ‘E’. I use the fastest setting of 1/8s (shame there isn’t a faster setting of say 1/32s) which essentially introduces a 1/8s delay to the shutter. I was concerned about this delay but after a year of shooting, it’s truly a non issue for me. Where split-second timing is critical, I use...

Connect smartphone reviews are written with the needs of photographers in mind. We focus on camera features, performance and image quality. Apple’s iPhone line arguably launched both the mass-market smartphone era and the practice of what we now call mobile photography. The iPhone 5s sees the continued refinement of that line, with little exterior change to differentiate it from its predecessor but a lot of new stuff going on under the hood. The 5s follows the recent pattern of Apple’s “S†releases, with internal upgrades that promise improved performance and new features....

They establish that’s a possibility but didn’t say for certain… Either way, it can and has happen to any company, it’s just kind of ironic that this would happen to Adobe because of their own software and while in the midst of the CC backslash. The bigger revelation in that article is that the attack actually happened 2-6 WEEKS ago (there’s two contradictory statements, at least the way I read it), and that Adobe was semi-clueless about the severity until the article’s writer contacted them… At best it seems like they were aware but were trying to...

Earlier this year, World Press Photo was forced to re-evaluate the integrity of its winning image following false allegations of forgery leveraged against photographer Paul Hansen. While a panel of forensic analysts found that the image had not been digitally manipulated, it concluded that the image had gone through “a fair amount of post-production, in the sense that some areas [had] been made lighter and others darker,” wrote Eduard de Kam, a digital photography expert at the Dutch Institute for Digital Photography.
The allegations were at the centre of an intense debate...

PhotoNinja is like no other. Once you have given it a serious try it becomes your main RAW converter. It easily does things, such as highlight recovery, detail rendering, difficult color noise reduction etc., my other converters (LR, ACR, Capture One Pro, DPP) can’t do. I posted some examples in Canon forum and some thought I didn’t know how to use LR, ACR etc. So, I posted RAW files for them to try. Of course they failed to match PN. Honestly, you will rediscover your old lenses.I still use CS6 for some photos after converting them in PN, because ACR lets you adjust locally for...

Just over a month ago we launched our brand new eBook – Portraits: Lighting the Shot – an eBook about Lighting Portraits (as the name suggests). The 25% off Early Bird special and bonus competition end in just over 72 hours time. When we launched this eBook we knew it was on a topic we get a lot of questions about but we didn’t realise just how much positive feedback we’d get about it. What’s People Are Saying About This eBook “If you want to limit yourself to only ever shooting natural light portraits, be my guest. If you want to level-up your...

A question about Lightroom that often arises is how to make it run faster. On my computer the biggest bottleneck comes when I’m looking at images in the Library module’s Loupe view or in the Develop module. Even images for which Lightroom has created 1:1 previews can take a few seconds to render properly. This may not sound much, but it’s annoying when flicking through images trying to decide which ones to process. It’s even more frustrating when zooming in 100% to check details which are important to me, such as that the eyes are in focus in portraits...

this is definitly overpriced in any sense , Leica S is not real MF , it does not even allow us to swap backs.the real digital MF is called Phase One , I do not even consider current digital Hassel Blad as real MF system(it is not Fullframe MF).anyway, this lens should be priced around 3k , think about even the large format or real MF Rodenstock lenses cost only 4 -5k , so people who are not collector or brainwashed Leica name lover never pay this kind of money for just 37.5 mp camera system using gens behind Kodak CCD.in fact , this camera does not resolve any better than the cheap Nikon...

Like many great ideas, ours was born of a problem. When I was a graduate student at MIT, I sat next to a classmate who is visually impaired. He would whisper to me to ask the time, even though he wore a watch — which prompted me to wonder how the blind tell time. I later learned from my classmate that he had a talking watch that announced the time out loud when he pressed a button, but he rarely used it...

By Lori Peterson Recently I was helping a photographer who had just switched from Elements to Photoshop 6. She was looking to streamline her editing and asked about keyboard shortcuts. At that moment it dawned on me that not everyone knew about keyboard shortcuts, what the most commonly used ones are, and even why you should teach yourself to use them. Once you learn the keyboard shortcuts that you use most, you will be able to do them without really thinking. It will speed up what you are doing in Photoshop and enable you to move effortlessly through your editing...

Faced with a changing market in which photographers’ copyrights are more insecure than ever in the mist of an increasingly visually aware and virtually connected society, Magnum Photos is six months away from launching a membership initiative that will allow the 66-year-old photography collective to build a community of paying supporters, BJP has been told.
The move comes 15 months after Magnum unveiled a new website that did away with watermarks. Speaking to BJP in September last year, Clément Saccomani, Magnum’s editorial director in Paris, explained that Magnum was...

Sigh. A-freaking-gain. Olympus got it right way long ago, “camera phones are to photography what 3 minute noodles are to cooking.” And why again is this at the MAIN page? I thought the point of this site was I’d NEVER have to see such articles EVER again while at the “normal” site. Yes, the skill of the photographer is the main thing, using a DSLR does not alone make you a real photographer, but the tool DOES matter too. Mathematically, if you know the exact transfer function that caused the blur, you apply the inverse transform, you will arrive back at the original image. (I.e, deconvolution, which is nothing new nor nothing magical). That is the reason for them seeking to understand the lens’ point-spread. Understanding a function’s impulse response tells you a lot about the function behaves. Blur doesn’t mean that information is lost – it only means that information is spread-out. In a purely academic example, if you apply a simple gaussian or spatial-averaging blur to an image,...

There’s a world of difference between lens testing, and real-world shooting with adapted lenses on mirrorless cameras. For one you need absolutely perfect alignment, for the other, you don’t. It’s probably worth bearing in mind that teleconverters and extension tubes will necessarily show the same effect, but that doesn’t stop anyone using them. In fact if you look really closely, you’ll probably find that all of your lenses appear to point in slightly different directions – and it simply doesn’t matter. Source Article from...

Tom Tezak on Maui sent me a video from one of his new listings in Wailea. He describes it as an emotional video. That is, it’s about the homeowners emotional attachment to their home rather than just listing features. Also, I noticed that this video was more saturated than previous videos that Tom and Travis had done before. So I talked to Travis, Tom’s videographer and asked him how he did that. Here’s what Travis said: I’ve been using the wave forms in FCPx to tweak the footage. It’s very similar to a histogram and makes exposure correction and color grading easier. Maui’s...

This week we explored the technique of back lighting subjects in a blog post so thought it might make a good challenge topic. Backlighting is something that can add impact to many types of photography – portraits, landscapes, wildlife etc and it can be done with both natural and artificial light – so you should have lots of scope to take some great shots this week. Once you’ve taken your ‘Back Lighting’ shots, upload your best ones to your favourite photo sharing site either share a link to them even better – embed them in the comments using the our...

Most of the articles I’ve written about light so far have explored the use of natural light. Painting with light in the landscape takes that idea further by mixing artificial light, provided by the photographer, with the ambient light to create surreal and dramatic images. Painting with light is an effective technique because it works with two ideas that, when combined, become very powerful: Painting with light usually takes place at dusk. The main reason for this is entirely practical. You use either a torch or a portable flash to paint with light, and they are...

PLAMBERT: Well it’s not like this engineering school project is likely to be widely available in the camera market in say 5 years. Then the D4 and the M9 are significantly different cameras. One is incredibly good in lowlight, with a fast AF, and a staggering frame rate, but doesn’t have optically good lenses–unless you use Zeiss manual focus lenses. And the other, the M9 of course, has staggeringly good lenses, is smaller, but is not good in lowlight, and has very slow buffer. So the two cameras aren’t exactly in the same category. Dear Web Font Providers

When you buy something, I bet you want it to work. Heck, even if you use something for free — maybe borrowed from a friend — I bet you want it to work. No one prefers hiking boots that are too tight (or too loose), a car that shimmies when you drive faster than 40 miles an hour, or a kitchen knife that can’t cut a tomato. And Web designers don’t prefer fonts that don’t fit a project, fall apart in different browsers or can’t be used in a...

Powerful WordPress Tips And Tricks
By Daniel Pataki
September 26th, 2013
Techniques, Workflow

I’ve been working with WordPress since the dawn of time, and even though I peek at the source code regularly, I still discover new tips and tricks. I’ve compiled my own list of 21 techniques that are handy, clever, fun or best practices rarely followed. I hope everyone finds something new in the list! 1. WordPress Has A Ton Of Built-In Scripts Using the great wp_enqueue_script() and wp_enqueue_style(), you can include styles and scripts...

You may have noticed the in the announcement that Sony made early September of the QX10 and QX100. They are basically lenses with sensors in them that talk to SmartPhones over WiFi. These things were released about 3 weeks ago, but they are still sold out everywhere. I believe this kind of design where the lens and sensor are completely separated from the user interface of the camera have a big future because people like using their SmartPhone and tablets as a user interface rather than the comparatively lame user interfaces in most cameras. This kind of design in an indirect...

Pin It In this classic DPS post (now updated) photographer Natalie explores 6 ways you can hand hold lenses at low apertures and low shutter speeds and still avoid blurry images caused by camera shake. I’m a mover and a shaker in general, and this is particularly true when I’m on a shoot. I’m twistin’ and turnin’, climbin’ and jumpin’ and to top it all off, I DO NOT have a steady hand, plain and simple. As often as possible I opt for lenses with VR (Vibration Reduction) or IS (Image Stabilization). You pay a pretty penny for this feature. For me,...

An attractive camera, aimed at the enthusiast, the Nikon D7100 follows on from the well-regarded D7000 which, I noted in my DPS review at the time, was described as a ‘professional-standard’ camera, not a professional one! The company has bumped up the CMOS resolution to 24.1 effective pixels from the D7000′s 16.2 megapixels, reason enough to whet your appetite! However, don’t get too excited because the sensor is the same size, which means the pixels are working harder. And that’s not all: the LCD screen is slightly larger and has increased resolution...

In the following post I’m not going to remind you again that you need to bring your tripod with you. I’m not here to warn you that weather is unpredictable and you should check the latest forecast before heading out the door. Nope this post won’t cover the fact that you should bring a flashlight and a few other miscellaneous tools just in case something goes wrong. And of course I won’t be telling you that you should tell someone where you’re going and when you’ll be back incase you do get lost, hurt or otherwise incapacitated and need help getting...

This looks like a nice camera, and it will probably be a perfect choice for some. But personally I don’t find any compelling reason to select one of these over it’s rivals. The RX100 is smaller and has better IQ. The LX7 is smaller and cheaper. The EPM2 has much better IQ and you can swap lenses. The Nikon 1 is even a better choice, as far as I am concerned. I just find it too big, too expensive, and too limited in what it can do. However, I feel the G1 X is a very compelling camera, due to the much larger sensor. The Canon G series are still nice cameras, that seem to everything...

Data-Driven Design In The Real World

As more designers and writers look to analytics to inform their decisions, many still struggle to implement their findings in a sustainable, ongoing way. Too often, testing and analysis are one-off activities, providing plenty of important-looking numbers but not lot of context or specific direction. After more than five years helping content and design teams capture, measure and understand website performance data (client-side...

For some time I’ve heard claims that the Policy of the FAA regarding Flying Commercial UAVs has legal issues. But recently I discovered a quote on rcgroups.com that give this claim a considerably more weight. Here is the quote: I’m a lawyer and in a position to clear up a couple of things, for educational purposes. 1. The FAA is indeed pursuing a $10,000 assessment (fine) against Trappy of Team Blacksheep. This is public knowledge. See the current issue of California Lawyer magazine where it is discussed.  Many of the legal issues being discussed here are likely to be litigated. I have...

Photo by naughton321 “Look where the sun is coming from – then position yourself with your back towards it so that it light up your subject’s face.†This was the very first piece of photographic advice that I was ever given as a child entrusted with the family’s camera for a school excursion. The intention behind it was good and in many photographic situations over the years it has actually served me well. However…. sometimes in photography it can be easy to get trapped in a mindset that actually limits the potential of your shots. My suspicion is that...

I have a rule when it comes to Photoshop, Lightroom, and post-processing in general. I have always felt that image manipulation should be a tool, not a crutch. Photoshop can make a good photo better, but a bad photo is just a bad photo. I strive to get it right in the camera. When people look at my work I want them to say, “That’s a great photo.†I don’t want them saying, “Hey, you’re really good with Photoshop.†As my friend Zack Arias is fond of saying, “If you ever hear yourself saying ‘I’ll fix it later in Photoshop,’ you need to...

I’m sure Iridient Raw developer is great, but I don’t use a Mac. Meanwhile, if you actually read the review, you’ll see I used Capture One as well as ACR. It applies more sharpening by default, but even so the images with distortion correction applied inevitably look a little soft on the pixel level. And, as I pointed out in the review, this is mainly of academic interest – it doesn’t really matter much in practice. Source Article from...

“What about multi-row or vertical panoramas? I probably do more of these than any flavor of single-row.” For vertical, do what I’ve explained below: just rotate the iPhone sideways. It’ll shoot vertical panos happily. For multi-row, use a third-party app. As I’ve explained below, for this, I recommend AutoStitch Panorama or, if you don’t mind the lower resolution, the free Photosynth. Both have excellent sphere stitching. The latter has better exposure difference smoothing. Here are two spheres I’ve shot with these two apps: (Tampere, Finland, in...

I think for many art forms/mediums, the idea/vision and the technical go hand in hand. I consider one or the other incomplete; sketches if you will. Mastery involves the ability to utilise the technical aspect of your craft in pursuit of your goals. For a beginner, I think there are going to be people who approach it from different points of view. Photography is inherently technical which is also why it tends to attracts more of the analytical of mind. It is both an art form and a craft and as such requires both. When one has less, a person is forced to utilise what he has. When one has more...
