Responsive Image Container: A Way Forward For Responsive Images?

Responsive Image Container: A Way Forward For Responsive Images? Responsive Image Container: A Way Forward For Responsive Images? By Yoav Weiss September 24th, 2013 Responsive Design, Strategy 2 Comments The aim of republishing the original article by Yoav is to raise awareness and support the discussion about solutions for responsive images. We look forward to your opinions and thoughts in the comments section! – Ed. It’s been a year since I last wrote about it, but the dream of a “magical” image format that will solve world hunger and/or the responsive images problem (whichever comes first) lives on. A...

A Five-Step Process For Conducting User Research

A Five-Step Process For Conducting User Research A Five-Step Process For Conducting User Research By David Sherwin September 23rd, 2013 Guidelines, Research, Tools 4 Comments Imagine that this is what you know about me: I am a college-educated male between the ages of 35 and 45. I own a MacBook Pro and an iPhone 5, on which I browse the Internet via the Google Chrome browser. I tweet and blog publicly, where you can discover that I like chocolate and corgis. I’m married. I drive a Toyota Corolla. I have brown hair and brown eyes. My credit-card statement shows where I’ve booked my most recent...

The PFRE Photographer of The Month For September is… Aaron Flores Congratulations to Aaron Flores of Tempe, AZ. The PFRE jury has voted Aaron the PFRE photographer for September. Aaron’s winning photograph is on the right. Click on it to view a full size image. It is fair to say that the jury was very impressed with Aaron’s image. This is the most points that any contestant has ever won this contest by. Also, many jury members commented that there were a number of other very strong images in this months contest. Sebastian Erras’s image took second place. Here are the voting results: Aaron Flores– 96 Sebastian Erras – 12 Charles Lynch – 3...

Nikon Coolpix A Review

Nikon Coolpix A Review My how the game has changed. A few months ago everyone was agog (and still are!) with maxi zoom cameras. Now it seems a few major makers seems to be intent on feeding the market with large aperture, fixed focal length cameras. Among them: Ricoh, Sony, Fujifilm, Sigma. I’ve used quite a few of these and have to admit their effective use demands quite a bit of restraint and understanding. There’s no point in venturing out to a sports event with the desire to catch superb, close up on-field action; similarly, there’s no joy in banging away on animal and kiddie...

Photographing Fall Foliage

Photographing Fall Foliage Fall colours can be very different from place to place. Some areas will have a very short colour-changing season of a week or less, while elsewhere it can last nearly a month. Every location will produce different colours, depending on the type of flora and other factors such as climate and soil. The hillsides of New England, which attract thousands of photographers every year, are famous for their dappled assortment of species producing different shades, ranging between reds and greens. The Sierra Mountains of California and Nevada, on the other hand, are known...

Maja Daniels wins Contour by Getty Images Portrait Prize

Maja Daniels wins Contour by Getty Images Portrait Prize Maja Daniels won the Contour by Getty Images Portrait Prize after being selected from among 721 applicants – the most entries ever received for a Getty Images grant, claims the stock agency, which has been running the Grants for Editorial Photography for the past eight years. The Portrait Prize was launched this year after Getty Images restructured its grants programme, cutting the Editorial prizes from $20,000 to $10,000 and introducing the Portrait Prize while continuing to support the Chris Hondros Fund Award. Daniels will received a $10,000 cash prize and will see her...

NYT offers a look ‘hometown’ across the U.S. through the eyes of teens

NYT offers a look ‘hometown’ across the U.S. through the eyes of teens Tweet The New York Times’ Lens Blog asked teenagers across the U.S. to submit photos of their hometowns for a project simply called ‘My Hometown.’ Thousands of teens responded to the call, with submissions coming from 45 states. The resulting collection is a yearbook of sorts, documenting the friends, family and places closest to a small sampling of the country’s young...

More of a good thing: Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II review posted

i own this camera since 4weeks, before, i had the canon s90 and s100….. the IQ ist superbe! the pocketability is perfect, at the last photo-job i did the most pictures with the rx100 and not with the canon 7d or 5dmk2….. the lens at 1,8 is very sharp, and in low light, the rx100 rocks….. BUT: i am very unhappy with the playmemory app, because it is not possible to change programs, setting the focus-point, choosing iso and so on….. i do urgently hope, that sony will do a much more professional app for remote-controling the rx100II, maybe they will do, because of the...

iPhone 5S real-world Samples Gallery

iPhone 5S real-world Samples Gallery DPReview Editor Barnaby Britton has spent the weekend shooting with Apple’s new iPhone 5s, testing the phone’s capabilities under a variety of lighting conditions.  Britton made some of the same observations that other reviews have pointed out: the camera is very quick, improvements to the flash do offer more accurate final results and the panoramas are incredibly impressive. He also noticed that those filtered photos snapped with the updated Camera app only appear as such within the phone: that is, your retro shot of your friend using the Noir filter will look black...

Why Bother With Photomatix or LR/Enfuse For Real Estate Interior Photos?

Why Bother With Photomatix or LR/Enfuse For Real Estate Interior Photos? Let me start by confessing that I shoot brackets very seldom because I like Scott Hargis’s small flash technique and I don’t like some of the side effects of bracket processing like the soft look, color shifts and being forced to deal with only existing light. I know from doing polls that some where around 45% of PFRE readers use a bracketing workflow for their real estate photography. The theory behind using Photomatix and similar bracket processing software has always been that you use Exposure Fusion, HDR or a hybrid of bracketing and flash to bring the brightness of the windows and...

Mastering Monochrome Mode

Mastering Monochrome Mode Andrew S. Gibson is the author of Mastering Photography: A Beginner’s Guide to Using Digital Cameras, on offer now at Snapndeals for a limited time. One of the benefits of digital photography that I really appreciate is the ease with which I can convert images to black and white. It was much harder back when I first became interested in photography. I remember wanting to try black and white, and print images in a darkroom, but living in a property with no spare space to build a darkroom meant that it was years before I was able to start learning to print. Now,...

How to Professionally Retouch Portraits in Lightroom

How to Professionally Retouch Portraits in Lightroom The Following is an excerpt from the SLR Lounge Lightroom Preset System v5 and accompanying workshop from the Lightroom Workshop Collection v5.  The Lightroom Preset System is designed to take you from Ordinary to Extraordinary photos in just a few seconds and clicks. In this article we’re going to do a headshot retouch to show how capable Lightroom is. Of course for a professional headshot retouch Photoshop is necessary, but Lightroom is also surprisingly capable. We’re going to utilize one of our “Soft Portrait” presets, similar to the one we used...

Kenko Tokina enters cine lens market with 16-28mm T3.0 wide zoom

Kenko Tokina enters cine lens market with 16-28mm T3.0 wide zoom Tweet The ever-increasing video capability of digital SLRs has seen manufacturers such as Canon, Samyang and Zeiss make video-optimised versions of their conventional lenses, and now Kenko Tokina is getting in on the act. The Tokina 16-28mm T3.0 is a manual focus version of the AT-X 16-28mm f/2.8 Pro FX wideangle zoom, with a redesigned barrel that features the usual refinements for video...

Decaying dresses make photographer’s landscapes personal

Decaying dresses make photographer’s landscapes personal Tweet Photographer Jean Albus is known for literally dressing up the landscapes she captures near her south central Montana home. She leaves dresses to weather in her harsh surroundings before photographing them, sometimes for as long as four years. Her final images sometimes feature a dress as she’s found it, sunken into the elements. She also often superimposes the worn dress over...

Stitching Images For Larger Prints

Stitching Images For Larger Prints For this image I decided I wanted to cover all of Lower Manhattan from the Statue of Liberty (far left) to the Empire State Building (far right, under the Brooklyn Bride, colored red, white and blue. I was using a Canon EOS 5D Mark III. My EF 24-70 f/2.8L II at 70mm covered the skyline and water with some sky vertically, so I positioned the camera vertically and proceeded to take 9 shots, moving the camera by turning the tripod head on it’s rotating base. I overlapped portions of each frame so Photoshop would have a point of reference when stitching. Each of the...

Documentary Photography – Six Tips for Creating a Legacy

Documentary Photography – Six Tips for Creating a Legacy We’ve all gone through times in our lives where we’ve lost loved ones. As a portrait photographer I would get calls all the time for “Urgent” family photos where one family member was terminally ill, and yet others that have photos done after the loss of a loved one. Why do we wait until it’s too late, or almost too late to capture the lives of those most important to us? As photographers (and before you argue that you aren’t a “professional” or you aren’t a photographer, I’m here to tell you that you are! If you take photographs you are a...

This Week In Real Estate Video #76 – Château de Sully-sur-Loire

Château de Sully-sur-Loire, France: By Nancy Falardeau, Mirabel, Quebec - littlemissvideo.com. Scott Hargis pointed this video out to me and the more I watch it the more I like Nancy’s style. The background music (Lakmé, Act 1: “Sous le dome épais” – Flower Duet) feels like a perfect fit for  Château de Sully-sur-Loire. Something positive is happening in the real estate photography market in Europe these days, I see much more activity than I’ve ever seen before in real estate photography in Europe. Flying eagle point of view: Larry Gray pointed out that this is a new aerial...

5 Ways to Take Better Smartphone Photos

5 Ways to Take Better Smartphone Photos When you think about smartphone photography what comes to mind? My guess is you probably think about Instagram, photo filters, bad selfies and any number of other keywords that describe this new wave of photography. If you like this post you might also want to check out this DPS eBook specifically written for improving your iPhone photography. Oh and no just because Apple...

iPhone 5S compared in our new studio test scene

What’s your point? Samsung is not the same as Foxconn. Apple owns the technology behind this A7 chip, and Samsung is acting as a high tech manufacturer. There are Taiwanese chip makers (Samsung’s Korean) that do the same thing for other US companies. Foxconn is a low-wage assembler of tech gear built and engineered by others. I’m sure that a Samsung chip plant isn’t the best place in the world to work, but do you have any evidence whatsoever that it’s like working at Foxconn? Let’s be clear too, Foxconn is a Taiwanese company with a bad reputation for abusing its employees in...

Where the sharpness comes from: A tour of Sigma’s factory

Where the sharpness comes from: A tour of Sigma’s factory Tweet Some people are happy to shoot with lenses and think only of the results, but it can also be fascinating to think about how such complex, precision pieces of engineering are made. Some insight is provided by Dave Etchells over at Imaging Resource, who has just posted a story about his visit to Sigma’s factory in Aizu, Japan. Etchells follows the process from shaping the lens...

Good Content Is Too Valuable To Die

The Ultimate Guide to Learning how to use Your first DSLR

The Ultimate Guide to Learning how to use Your first DSLR If you’ve bought yourself a DSLR and, after unpacking it from the box, you are intimidated by the number of buttons and dials, and by the thickness of the manual, it can be very tempting to put the manual down, flick it onto ‘Auto’ and start shooting.  Whilst that is fine for some, it may not be long until you crave the creative control that inspired you to purchase a DSLR in the first place, but where do you begin?  If you consider yourself a beginner who is unsure of how to make the most of your camera, this post is designed for you.  It’s intended to...

How I Shot It: Deanne Fitzmaurice Shares the Story Behind the Shot

How I Shot It: Deanne Fitzmaurice Shares the Story Behind the Shot A post by Pulitzer Prize winning documentary photographer Deanne Fitzmaurice. Presenter in this week’s CreativeLIVE Photo Week So there I was, waiting in the quiet darkness that precedes Kibera’s beautiful sunrises, for the 12 disciples — our security team from a local tribal gang. They were the type of guys you want by your side and the definition of the guys you didn’t want to cross. Despite the high crime and desperation in Kibera, when any of those 12 guys were by my side, I felt safe and free to photograph as much as I wanted without having to look...

Entries open for third Tim Hetherington Grant

Entries open for third Tim Hetherington Grant The Tim Hetherington Grant was established after the photojournalist’s death in 2011 to celebrate his commitment to “finding new ways to tell compelling stories about politics, conflict and the human experience, and to relay these stories to a wide audience”, say World Press Photo and Human Rights Watch, two organisations that administer the grant. Photojournalist and filmmaker Hetherington died on 20 April 2011, alongside Getty Images’ photographer Chris Hondros, while covering the Libyan conflict in Misrata. The two photographers came under heavy fire and...

Your smartphone camera: How many megapixels do you need?

Your smartphone camera: How many megapixels do you need? Megapixels. How did such a simple concept become so wrapped up in hyperbole, controversy and confusion? Compact camera manufacturers act like everyone needs more of them. Photography pundits generally wish there were less. Smartphone manufacturers are completely unable to agree where they stand on the issue. The current generation of premium smartphones includes a 4MP model from HTC, 8MP from both Apple and Google, 13MP from Samsung and LG, 20.7MP Sony and 41MP from Nokia. Surely they can’t all be right? So how many megapixels do you really need? It’s a simple question without a...

Behind the Shot: Lost in Space

I disagree, I tried, and it looks weird. The picture looks unballanced without the water. Also I like the “reverse” effect, usually when we take a picture of a landscape, we get sharp and detail below, on land, and a fuzzy sky, on this picture it is the other way around, and it is this reverse effect that make the picture special. Source Article from...

iPhone 5s teardown: iFixit digs into Apple’s newest phone

iPhone 5s teardown: iFixit digs into Apple’s newest phone While iPhone fanatics worldwide are still lining up for Apple’s new iPhone 5s, the folks at iFixit are already taking the smartphone apart.  There’s plenty to see inside the new flagship iPhone, but of course we’re most interested in the latest iteration of the iSight camera. iFixit sees signs of Sony in the 5s camera module, and quotes Jim Morrison, Vice President of the Technology Analysis Group at Chipworks, as stating “the DNL markings are consistent with the markings on the camera modules housing the Sony IMX145 we saw in the iPhone 4s and on the iPhone...

Building An Online Magazine App For Windows 8, Part 1: The HTML5 App

Building An Online Magazine App For Windows 8, Part 1: The HTML5 App Building An Online Magazine App For Windows 8, Part 1: The HTML5 App By Marcus Wendt September 19th, 2013 Apps, CSS, Techniques 1 Comment Back in 2010, Microsoft shifted its focus from propriety Web technology to open Web technology. The first fruits of this refocus materialized a few years later — in Internet Explorer, the Windows operating system, its developer tools and its cloud software. Things have changed for the better so far: With version 10, Internet Explorer has finally grown up and become a fast modern browser. You can build native...

Land Your Next Web Development Job: The Interview Process

Land Your Next Web Development Job: The Interview Process Land Your Next Web Development Job: The Interview Process By Dean Hume September 18th, 2013 Inspiration, Interviews, Workflow 14 Comments During my career as a software developer and manager, I have been involved in many interviews. Whether the interviewer or interviewee, I have always paid special attention to the interview process. In my current role, I spend a lot of time interviewing potential employees, so I’ve seen my fair share of good and bad interviews. Some candidates stand out from the crowd immediately, while others are just another...

Three is One and Two and One are None!

Three is One and Two and One are None! By now everyone has read or seen the account of taking out Bin Laden. In the book  Seal Target Geronimo about the seal team operation that killed Osama Bin Laden the Seal operators have this saying, “Two is one and one is none“. Which means when you are dealing with physical equipment you have to have a backup if you want a high probability of having one piece of that equipment is always working. On the operation against Bin Laden the Seals learned something new about backup because they lost a secret stealth helicopter because two of it’s critical avionics boxes failed at the same...

You and Your LCD: A Matter of Trust

You and Your LCD: A Matter of Trust It glows on the back of your camera like a homing beacon– drawing you to its display like a moth to a flame. You protect it. You rely on it (perhaps a bit too much?). But can you trust it? That question has been the subject of debate for quite some time, and the unfortunate answer you hear most often is, “It depends.” I suppose you could say that there are levels of trust. Personally, I have a love/hate relationship with my LCD. Think about it. The thing is practically useless on a sunny day. The times when I need it most– outside the controlled...

Getting Creative with Aperture and Colour

Getting Creative with Aperture and Colour   Andrew S. Gibson is the author of Mastering Photography: A Beginner’s Guide to Using Digital Cameras, on offer now at Snapndeals for a limited time. You are probably already familiar with the effect of aperture on your images. If not, here’s a quick recap: for any given focal length and camera-to-subject distance, use a wider aperture to get less of the image in focus. There’s a fair amount of science behind that statement (some of it subjective, such as the definitions of depth-of-field and sharpness) but the end result is that you can use wide apertures...

Nikonos reborn? Our first impressions review of the submersible Nikon AW1

Yep, slide film was notorious for being low in exposure range. But we managed, regardless. And yes, us old Nikonos shooters used flash almost every time. 🙂 (Although I could never afford a Nikonos, not even a salt-worn III – I had to make do with a Sea&Sea. But the thought was there. 🙂 ) I’m sure the camera will be a bucketload of fun for snorkelling and jet-skiiing and such, but a Nikonos it ain’t. Not even close. After many, many months of design and testing we are happy to announce the official unveiling of our studio test scene. The new scene was designed to address certain drawbacks with the previous test scene, as well as providing the opportunity to show more real-world relevant information about how cameras behave. We’ve increased the number of cameras supported to 23 and we’ll be continuing to add models (old and new) in the coming weeks. You can read a more detailed explanation of the scene, what it offers, how we shoot it and why we needed it in an article by our Studio Manager,...

Apple’s new iOS 7 from a photographer’s perspective While early reviews of the iPhone 5c and 5s may have mobile tech fans talking hardware today, the bigger news is actually Apple’s free software update for iPhones (iPhone 4 and later), iPads (iPad 2 and later) and iPod touch (fifth generation). We’ve just downloaded the software on our iPhone 5 and can’t wait to start playing with some of the features aimed specifically at mobile photography enthusiasts.  Camera app The camera app has been updated for our Instagram-obsessed culture. Adobe Releases Official Version Of Lightroom 5.2

Warning: There are reports that “Reanalyze button in the Upright Lens Correction area doesn’t work. Adobe appears to have screwed it up in 5.2RC and not fixed it in the final release”. It might be smart to hold off on installing this version. Lightroom 5.2 beta has been available for a couple of months, but today Adobe released the final version of 5.2. It’s got a couple of nice improvements. To down this free update just go to the help menu and click on “Check for update..” The official Adobe update page is here, but I like Laura Shoe’s YouTube video explanation of the update...

Architecture: Photographing Exterior Details

Architecture: Photographing Exterior Details Between shooting for clients, teaching my kids photography class, family obligations, and all of the non-photography activities essential to running a photography business, Life has a way of not letting me shoot just for me very often. So, when I do get a chance to get out and shoot for myself, I find that I gravitate to architectural subjects. I live pretty close to a busy downtown area with a lot of history, so there’s never any shortage of interesting buildings to photograph. Much has been written about the technical aspects of architectural photography....

Conquering Crappy Light In Fashion Shoots: Mixed Shade

Conquering Crappy Light In Fashion Shoots: Mixed Shade These tips are from fashion photographer Lindsay Adler – one of the instructors during this week’s CreativeLIVE Photo Week – an event being held this week that showcases teaching by 50 photographers across 3 tracks, including weddings and family. Finding a shady spot during an outdoor shoot is a perfect way to snap beautiful pictures while still maintaining a sunny outdoor feel –– but what happens when your model’s face is being hit by directional light sneaking through the side of your shady covering? Check out professional glamour and fashion...

DxOMark tests Canon EOS 70D Dual Pixel AF against the Sony SLT-A77 Tweet DxOMark has tested the Canon EOS 70D’s live view autofocus system in comparison to the Sony SLT-A77, looking at focus speeds and accuracy in both movie and stills modes. The two cameras offer an intriguing contrast in technologies; the 70D uses Canon’s latest ‘Dual Pixel AF’ on-sensor phase detection, while the A77 employs a separate phase detection AF sensor which receives light via a semi-transparent mirror. Click the link...

Introduction To Polygonal Modeling And Three.js

Introduction To Polygonal Modeling And Three.js Introduction To Polygonal Modeling And Three.js By Jason Demeuse September 17th, 2013 JavaScript, Techniques, Tools 2 Comments When the third dimension is introduced into an entertainment medium, it forever changes the way that medium is presented and consumed. The photorealism of the CGI dinosaurs in Jurassic Park opened the doors for film creators to use computers to create visual environments that never would have been possible otherwise. VeggieTales spawned a new type of cartoon, one that uses 3-D objects instead of drawings and which inspired...

If You Don’t Charge For Real Estate UAV Videography Will The FAA Consider You Commercial?

If You Don’t Charge For Real Estate UAV Videography Will The FAA Consider You Commercial? I’ve been thinking recently that it would be nice to get a statement from the FAA about their attitude about enforcement of their “no commercial UAVs” rule since they seem to be very inconsistent about enforcement of the rule, there is a huge increase in UAVs, and it’s going to be a year or more before the FAA is going finish their UAV regulations. It turns out that we got exactly that. The Connecticut Post has an article about a local Realtor that does real estate marketing videography and photography with his UAV (Thanks to Dave Williamson in Perth, AU for pointing out this...

Proper Disposal of Outdated Media: A Cautionary Tale

Proper Disposal of Outdated Media: A Cautionary Tale If I were to guess, I’d say it’s safe to assume that you’ve accumulated quite a sizable image library. Regardless of whether you’ve been shooting digitally for a decade or even just a year or two, all of those ones and zeros dancing happily inside your computer as image files are piling up. Don’t forget about all of those photos you’ve scanned in from your film days. Digitized any slides lately? How about the photo stream from your phone? Megabytes become gigabytes, gigabytes become terabytes, and over time the sheer volume of data can become mind...

Photographer Jen Kinney wins Dorothea Lange-Paul Taylor Prize

Photographer Jen Kinney wins Dorothea Lange-Paul Taylor Prize Jen Kinney is the first photographer to win the Dorothea Lange-Paul Taylor Prize since it was relaunched in late 2012. Previously, the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University awarded the prize to encourage collaboration between a photographer and a writer in the tradition of Dorothea Lange and Paul Taylor who worked together on the seminal work American Exodus. Under the new rules, solo artists are also eligible, with the prize supporting “documentary artists – working alone or in teams – who are involved in extended, ongoing fieldwork projects that rely on...

Laurent Van Der Stockt wins Visa d’Or News Award “[I think] the jury made the choice to award a journalism prize more than a photographic one,” said photographer Laurent Van Der Stockt when he received the 2013 Visa d’Or News Award at the 25th Visa pour l’Image photojournalism festival. “I say this because the G20 is meeting now, and I have the feeling that these country leaders don’t have real public support to force them towards action. I feel that the majority of people are against a military intervention.” Van Der Stockt has been awarded the Visa d’Or, which comes with a €8000...

Our Fujifilm X-M1 review: big photo quality in a small package?

Our Fujifilm X-M1 review: big photo quality in a small package? Tweet We’ve completed our review of the Fujifilm X-M1, which is the company’s lowest-priced X-Trans-based mirrorless camera. It takes the sensor from the X-E1 and X-Pro1 and puts it in a simpler, more portable body. Fujifilm also added a tilting 3-inch LCD and Wi-Fi, which puts the X-M1 on much the same level as mirrorless cameras like the Panasonic Lumix GF6 and Sony NEX-5T. For a detailed look at the X-M1, click the link below. Fujifilm unveils X-A1: an entry-level mirrorless with a conventional sensor

Fujifilm unveils X-A1: an entry-level mirrorless with a conventional sensor Tweet Fujifilm has announced the X-A1, its most basic X-mount mirrorless camera yet. The X-A1 shares a body with the X-M1 but is based around a 16MP sensor with a conventional, Bayer color filter array, rather than the X-Trans design that’s been used in the other X-series models. Despite its lowly position in the lineup, the X-A1 retains the 920k-dot tilting rear screen and Wi-Fi offered by the X-M1, yet is being launched with an MSRP of $599 with the XC...

Adobe Photoshop Photography Program Pricing – Scott Kelby’s Take

Adobe Photoshop Photography Program Pricing – Scott Kelby’s Take Ever since Adobe announced Creative Cloud and the move to subscription pricing of most of their applications I’ve been a little cranky because I’ve been an Adobe customer since 1990 and I just don’t like the subscription software model and Adobe’s pricing up to now has felt like too much for what I’m going to get with Creative Cloud. Rick, a PFRE reader pointed out the new limited time pricing that Adobe announced at Photoshop World last week. After reading Scott Kelby’s take on the announcement I have to say it the pricing sounds much better for what you get. I still don’t...

3 Ways to Guarantee Good Exposures

3 Ways to Guarantee Good Exposures There is no excuse for coming home from a photo shoot to discover that your images are over or under exposed. Your camera’s light meter will guide you to choose the right aperture and shutter speed settings to get a good exposure, or it will choose them automatically if you are using the automatic or semi-automatic modes. The problem is that your camera can be fooled by tricky lighting situations and that’s why your image may not come out exactly the way you want it, despite all the advanced technology in your camera. Below are 3 techniques you can use to make...

If I adjust the picture with brightens, levels, curves it’s still photography? If I adjust the picture locally (gradient, mask, color mask, color adjusting, color balance) it’s still photography? If I adjust the picture with brush tool (smoothing, darkening, lighting with brush tool) it’s still photography? If I adjust the picture with copy (stamp tool, copy past of the picture, remove a part of the picture) is it still a photography? If I adjust the picture by painting a small detail with brush tool is it still a photography? If I paint the picture from scratch is it still a...

Photographers Bruce Weber and David Bailey try the Nokia Lumia 1020

Photographers Bruce Weber and David Bailey try the Nokia Lumia 1020 Nokia is working hard to promote the imaging abilities of its 41-megapixel smartphone, the Lumia 1020. Its most recent marketing ploy was to send two famous photographers on a shoot with the device in Harlem, New York. Nokia gave its current flagship smartphone to David Bailey and Bruce Weber, who used the Lumia 1020 for street photography during their 24-hour Harlem shoot in July.  For Weber, a fashion photographer known for his work for Calvin Klein, Vogue, Rolling Stone, GQ and Vanity Fair, it was his first time using any kind of digital camera for a shoot. “I don’t do...

IFA roundup: What’s new in mobile photography tech

For now, only the One and G2. There are rumors about the Nexus 5… as it might use the same camera module of the G2.Unfortunately, AFAIK there are no serious comprehensive OIS tests. Btw, since the effectiveness of the stabilization depends on the hardware of the camera module, it is not correct IMHO to say that “the androids only do up to 3 stops”, since the OIS is independent from the underlying operating system (i.e. it might be true that Nokia’s OIS is better, but if it is so it’s only due to better hardware and this does not mean that a future android with...

How I Shot It: Food Photography

How I Shot It: Food Photography A post by freelance commercial and editorial photographer, food stylist & writer -Andrew Scrivani – one of the course presenters at next weeks Creative Live Photo Week. In food photography, most of the time, the art direction we receive is pretty straightforward. I like to start by discussing the color palette of the piece. The season of the year can certainly influence how I approach the shoot. A regional theme or ethnicity that needs to shine through the images may also drive the selection of the propping, table surfaces, linen, and extra food items that...

All About Flash [Book Review]

All About Flash [Book Review] If there’s one thing that flummoxes many of us, it’s flash. Onboard or off camera. Mark Cleghorn’s book gives away the techniques he’s learned over the course of nearly 30 years as a photographer, well-known in Europe and the US. Beginning with a single on-camera flash effectively and creatively, then moving all the way up to four or more units in multiple wireless groups, he describes how to shoot the best images possible in a variety of situations. He outlines the methods in minimising distracting details in an image with a single flash; he shows how to...

This Week In Real Estate Video #75 – Historic Buddy Werner Home In Steamboat Springs

I’m going to the beach this weekend so I’m putting Charlie’s stunning video up a day early. This week’s post is by Charlie Dresen, Steamboat Springs, CO: Recently the N.Y. Times wrote about Calvin Klein’s new home in the Southampton, New York. There’s an obsession with celebrities and real estate. Zooming In: Using Telephotos In Landscape Photography

Zooming In: Using Telephotos In Landscape Photography This shot of the Blue Ridge Mountains was taken with an EOS 5D Mark III and EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS II lens at 200mm. Exposure is 1/3″, f/16, ISO 400. This shot of a lone pine on the side of a cliff was taken from Glacier Point at sunset. Using a 400mm lens allowed me isolate the tree being kissed by sunlight while the background behind went dark. I used an EOS 5D Mark II with EF 100-400mm L...

Laurent Van Der Stockt wins Visa d’Or News Award
