The pixel pitch is the same as the one of NEX-7. Do not forget that we have also about 24% smaller image all over. If you produce the same image size with smaller sensor, you will have a loss, here we have 24% less image surface to cover. IQ is absolutely amazing, Sony sensor performs excellent and IQ difference on APS-C is not noticeable. On the other side, is the DOF factor, it is hard to get good bokeh with a 4/3 camera. Maybe it is a reason for Voigtlaender to make Noktons with 0.95 to get DOF ranges that look good. I have compared 4/3 to APSC, found not that the IQ was less good, but...

As much as I like the Aperture, every time I looked for a particular camera support, it wasn’t there. I still have the Aperture 2. But as I just bought a new cam (obviously unsupported by every Aperture version) I’m basically forced to “upgrade” to something else. Probably would try the Adobe’s koolaid this time. I was hoping that the free options would catch-up – at least on the photo organization side of things – but alas still no luck. DigiKam tries, but porting something like KDE to Windows or Mac apparently is exercise is futility. RawTherapee...

Cementing its commitment to the CFast standard, SanDisk has introduced the Extreme Pro CFast 2.0 memory card, the first of its kind. The card boasts read speeds of up to 450MB/s and write speeds of up to 350MB/s, and will be sold with 60 or 120GB of storage. As a competitor to the Nikon-backed XQD standard, this first CFast 2.0 card is introduced alongside with an ARRI AMIRA documentary-style camera that records to internal CFast 2.0 cards. Designing The Words: Why Copy Is A Design Issue
By Sam Wright
September 12th, 2013
Content, Web Design
1 Comment
The relationship between copy and design has been covered many times on Smashing Magazine. Working in a content-focused industry, we need to keep this issue pretty close to heart; creating great copy is pointless if it is visually uninspiring or unreadable. Likewise, if the content doesn’t deliver, then even the most attractive page won’t hold the reader’s attention. Yet much of the discussion so far has concentrated on issues such...

As a result of the post I did a couple of weeks ago where I asserted  that putting up with bad behavior is not a way to improve your customer service, I got a great question from Mike in Knoxville, TN. He said: I just read your post, and it got me thinking about how I take care of my clients. Clients, in a strange way, are somewhat like a spouse, how you treat them, or how you re-act to them can have different results. I’m always looking for someway to add extra value to my services, value for what I do for them, what kinda things I can do for them that they would like, would prove...

It’s no secret that there are many ways to enhance our photographs with Lightroom. By using just a handful of sliders we can get some great results in a matter of minutes and by learning how to use tools like the gradient filter tool we can create some more specialized effects with just a little extra effort. So with all these great tools is there still a need for the Tone Curve tool in Lightroom 4 and beyond? Or is it just another way of creating the same effects? What is Lightroom’s Tone Curve Tool? Well the answer to that question really lies in the...

This bride and groom are both serving in the army, and both are gun enthusiasts. I asked the groom if he had their guns handy, and a bullet, and came up with this shot as one of the ring shots. This shot was taken in available light, under a tent outdoors. EOS 5D Mark III with EF 100mm f/2.8L IS; ISO 2500, f/16, 1/125. In my career in photography, I’ve chosen not to focus on weddings as a business model, and shoot only a few every year. I try to avoid being “traditional†in my approach to weddings, mixing traditional shots or types of shots with my own...

Responsive Navigation On Complex Websites
By Jon Rundle

Central to a solid user experience is a well-structured, simple navigation system. Over the past few months, I’ve been involved in launching two large institutional websites with complex navigation systems. Maintaining simplicity on such large websites becomes increasingly difficult as content requirements grow and tiers of navigation are added, not to mention the extra complexity added by small screens. To illustrate the...

A couple of weeks ago when I did a post about a broker asking a reader for exclusive photo rights, the post attracted the attention of Joel Rothman and Steve Schlackman who are both Intellectual Property Attorneys in Florida. Steve does a blog on the subject of IP Law for Artists. Joel has represented a couple of PFRE readers in the past and both Joel and Steve are interested in helping educating both photographers and agents about photo licensing in the real estate industry. Steve is going to cover some of these issues that we are all interested in on his Art Law Journal blog. I’ll be...

By Kav Dadfar Deserts can make for very dramatic and beautiful landscapes but it can also be challenging to avoid your photos appearing flat and uninteresting. Here are 6 tips to help you on your way. 1. Catch the Right Light It’s no secret that photographing in the early morning or late afternoon provides a wonderfully soft light for your images which helps you avoid making them look flat – and the desert is no exception. The soft light can give the sand a beautiful glow and in the above photo, the red late afternoon light has really brought out the colour of...

Apple revealed not one, but two iPhones today at its media event in Cupertino, California. The latest devices are aimed at two very different markets. The colorful iPhone 5C is poised to compete against cheaper smartphones while the iPhone 5S debuts Apple’s newest innovations in mobile technology, including a revamped iSight camera. However, both models are touting a fairly underwhelming spec of 8 megapixels of imaging power  — will it be enough to lure in mobile shutterbugs who may be tempted by the massively megapixel-powered 41MP Nokia Lumia 1020 or 20.7MP Sony Xperia Z1? ...

Several readers recommended Dave Dugdale’s video lens comparison review of the Canon 16-35mm II vs the Tokina 16-28mm. Keep in mind that even though Dave is making this comparison to try to decide which wide angle lens to use on his full frame Canon DSLR the Tokina 16-28mm lens is also available for use with full frame Nikon DSLRs. I have to say that it’s pretty amazing that the Tokina looks so good compared to Canon’s best L series lens wide angle lens when it’s only half the price of the Canon 16-35mm. I can attest to the fact that the Canon 16-35 is built like a tank! I have the...

There has been a spat of posts and articles recently extolling the storyline that “Photography Is Dead!†or “Creativity Is Dead!†or both. And then some. The articles I have read rightly point out that more people have cameras and are sharing images on the likes of Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. And that most of those images are not some form of art (the food you ate, a self-portrait (or ‘selfie’ as they are colloquially know) or yet another sunset, etc…). They also point to this deluge of images as something that is dragging down photography as a...

By Oded Wagenstein Have you ever met a person, while travelling abroad or at home, who has such an interesting face that you would really like to photograph?  But, just before you press the shutter, you suddenly think, “How am I going to shoot this Because there are so many questions to answer: How do I approach a strange person? Should I photograph from a distance, with a Tele-photo lens, or should I get closer? What if the person will get offended or angry? It depends on the situation but, in 99% of my portraits, I use what I like to call the “being...

Some of us where seeing here a replacement, or upgrade to the OMD-M5, and now, yes, it is one, but with 4/3 mount, not M4/3 mount. So, those who have the full package of M4/3 lenses will be disappointed, specially because you can mount a M4/3 with 4/3 lenses via a small adapter, but the opposite does not work. So, again we have a new 4/3 camera, with same, just updated, sensor as the OMD-M5. Is there something to be excited now, I doubt it, except those that waited for this one. If I had the choice at the moment to buy a 4/3, GX7 in M4/3 is the way to go. I do not want to carry dslr’s...

Olympus has announced its new OM-D E-M1 interchangeable lens camera, which is now the flagship of its Micro Four Thirds lineup. Rather than calling it the follow-up to the E-M5, Olympus says that the E-M1 is actually the ‘successor’ to the E-5, a Four Thirds DSLR introduced back in 2010.  The E-M1’s 16.3-megapixel Live MOS sensor has on-chip phase detection, which promises to focus legacy Four Thirds lenses (using the optional MMF-3...

In the time since Apple released the iPhone 5, mobile photography has greatly improved. Samsung, Nokia, HTC and Sony have collectively raised the bar on smartphone camera hardware, leaving iPhone photographers glancing enviously at phones with physical zoom lenses, 41-megapixel sensors, so-called ultrapixels and detachable lens hardware. While Apple’s mobile app marketplace may still be the leader in photography apps, its camera hardware has some catching up to do. What can Apple do to appease the mobile photographer who may consider switching mobile platforms for a different...

Simon Maxwell, our man in London, just finished a nice tutorial on using your ultra wide angle lens with restraint. A wide angle lens is essential for shooting real estate, but an ultra wide angle lenses can be abused. When I first got my first real wide angle lens (a Canon 16-35mm on a Canon 1Ds) I loved to rack it out to 16mm and shoot a whole listing with it on 16mm. Then when I would show the results to my wife (the listing agent) she would go ballistic and send me back to shoot it over again because the property looked like a “bowling alleyâ€. The fact is, as Simon illustrates in...

by Steven McConnell How do you make your photography more meaningful, moving and unique? Lately, I’ve been fascinated with the idea that our motivations significantly influence the quality of photography we create. This sentiment is expressed particularly well in The Foutainhead by Ayn Rand. The character is an architect, rather than a photographer, though his lessons apply to any artist who wants to create great work: “Nothing can be reasonable or beautiful unless it’s made by one central idea, and the idea sets every detail. A building is alive, like a...

So Microsoft has bought the best bits of Nokia, and given their already cozy relationship, the two companies will likely be working as one much more quickly than, say, Google and Motorola did. Billed as a way to bring back the romance of the darkroom in the smartphone era, Enfojer is an indiegogo project which promises to make your smartphone into an enlarger to create real prints. Part app and part hardware, Enfojer enlarges the image displayed on a smartphone’s LCD, projecting it onto real photo paper. Â The paper is then processed as usual in traditional black and white chemistry. The resulting black and white prints are expected to last around 70 years when processed properly. Though iPhones are shown above, the plan includes apps and cell phone templates for...

I like these books for more than the obvious reason that they contain a wealth of help in their pages. For one thing they’re an easy read so, after a hard day behind the camera, you can relax at home and read it for pleasure, not only soaking up all the useful info but enjoying the largish pictures within its pages. Author Rob Sheppard intentionally laid out all the practical info and creative suggestions you would need to take your images to a higher level: which lenses and accessories are best for the purpose; the pluses and minuses of RAW vs JPEG; how do you...

Good photographers learn to work within the limitations of their equipment and learn to cope with scenes where the brightness range is too great for the camera’s sensor to handle. Here are some ideas for you to explore – and none of them involve HDR techniques. 1. Look at the light I suspect the reason that most photographers are attracted to HDR photography is because they like the look of the high contrast, super saturated images you often see created with this technique. It’s not really about capturing every detail of a high contrast subject. Look at the...

“[I think] the jury made the choice to award a journalism prize more than a photographic one,” said photographer Laurent Van Der Stockt when he received the 2013 Visa d’Or News Award at the 25th Visa pour l’Image photojournalism festival. “I say this because the G20 is meeting now, and I have the feeling that these country leaders don’t have real public support to force them towards action. I feel that the majority of people are against a military intervention.”

Another day, another controversial change to Facebook’s terms of service – this time, Facebook is planning to update its (very) smallprint in a way that some commentators worry greatly increase the company’s power to exploit users’ content and identities. The American Association of Media Photographers has warned its members to ‘beware’ Facebook’s proposed new terms of service, which – it claims – would...

Photographer Stéphanie Godot’s food photos aren’t the stylized, sexy kind you’d see on the cover of magazines like Bon Appetit. Images in her ‘Fad Diets’ series are frightening visual documents of some of the weirder diets out there, while also being striking experiments in color and texture. They may not make your mouth water, but they are a lot of fun, and might just make you reconsider that crash diet… Here’s...

This Week In Real Estate Video #74 – Editing RAW Video In Lightroom September 6th, 2013 Jon Lindsay is a property/architectural filmmaker in the UK doing some interesting work with RAW video and Adobe Lightroom. It’s a new system that has changed his workflow and produced great results. The video to the right shows an example of the results Jon gets with this new workflow. This week we are celebrating the launch of our brand new Portrait Lighting eBook so I thought it might be fun to have a portraiture themed weekly challenge. Your challenge is to take and share a portrait image that only uses the available light in the setting where you’re shooting. So if you’re outside during the day – shoot only using natural light. If you’re inside, only use the light in the room (window light, the normal artificial lights in the room etc). So – you can use artificial light but no your speed light or any studio lights – just what is...

In a previous article I explored ways of taking photos in soft light. Today, I’d like to look at the opposite of that, and discuss the idea of taking photos in hard light. In the earlier piece I wrote about matching the light to the subject. That’s an important concept to understand – especially when it comes to hard light, a type of lighting considered by many photographers to be unsuitable for most types of photography. I’m not saying those photographers are incorrect. Hard light doesn’t suit every type of subject, and if you’re trying to take a...

At a time when established photo agencies are struggling to keep their heads above water, the decision to create a new one can seem reckless, and Christian Sauvan-Magnet, one of the founders of Haytham Pictures, knows this. “You’ve come to ask why we’re such fools?†he asks, amused, as a greeting. The answer could be “because we’re hopeless romantics, in love with photojournalismâ€.
Before launching Haytham Pictures, Sauvan-Magnet spent years developing and installing image management software for photo agencies. In 2007, he launched his own company, FreeForPress, which...

Of course, anyone can post in here, and that includes, the folks working with Sony, Fuji, and Canikon, Oly, Pany, Penny-Tax, etc… All we really have here, is reason, including logic; about the facts. All in all, this was a pretty good summer– except, of course, for the trip that didn’t happen. I was supposed to hit the road with some friends last month, but events beyond our control pulled the rug out from under us at the last minute. My bags were packed. I was ready to go. The taxi was waiting outside my door. OK– not really, but my Think Tank City Walker 30 really was packed and I am all out of cheesy musical metaphors. I took a few shots of this pretty amazing bag before I unpacked it and thought I’d share a few impressions. I see so...

BJP: What motivated you to document life in the Niger Delta and Nigeria’s clandestine oil trade?
Samuel James: Nigeria is the largest oil producer in Africa, accounting for approximately half of sub-Saharan output, and the fifth largest supplier to the United States. As Africa’s second largest economy, oil accounts for almost 80 percent of the government’s revenue, yet very little trickles down to the people. In the Niger Delta, at the source of production, the vast majority of the population exists on less than a $1 a day in an increasingly ravaged environment...

BJP: Before starting this project, you’ve worked in Kivu in 2009. What made you return to document the situation there in 2012?
Marco Gualazzini: I decided to go back because I have strong ties there, missionaries to whom I feel especially close. The Congo has also always fascinated me. It’s a vast land with an extremely tragic history of unresolved conflict, which has burst out over and over again with almost predictable timing for half a century, since the first massacres between Hutu and Tutsi in the sixties in Rwanda.

BJP: Why did you decide to photograph Iraq war veterans for War is Personal in the first place?
Eugene Richards: At the time, most of us who were questioning people didn’t buy [what we were being told] about weapons of mass destruction. It got to be crazy frustrating. I felt like that even before: after 9/11 I knew we were about to enter into 50 or 100 years of war, that this was going to be a pivotal point in changing all our lives – and it depressed me to death. BJP: Why did you decide to do a project on drones?
Tomas van Houtryve: The drone war has been going on for about 10 years now and I feel like there isn’t any good visual translation of it. This is somewhere photojournalism has failed because we can’t get to sites where drone strikes are happening. Drone technology is developing quickly; it’s being relied on more and more by politicians in America and photojournalists aren’t participating in the debate.

How To Create A Water Lily In Illustrator

Water lilies are beautiful flowers and ideal tutorial material. To get to our result, we’ll be doing a lot of clever actions, mostly rotating and duplicating, and we’ll have a lot of room for experimentation as well. For instance, we can try out different ways to build the layers of petals, and we can play with different shades of pink gradients. This tutorial shows the basic steps I followed; but in creating this flower, I did way...

Notice something about the title of the article? It doesn’t say how to take “portraits†of kids! Kids, especially those five and under, pretty much dictate how the photography session is going to unfold, and it usually involves moving. Fast! Over the years my style has evolved from format portraiture with medium format film camera (which is NOT conducive to movement) to 35mm, and finally to digital. Digital allows much more freedom of motion and with a few tips you should be on your way to some great photos of kids. THE SEVEN TIPS : have patience be ready...

The Olympus PEN E-P5 sure took some getting. Following a briefing by Olympus it was two months before I actually got my sticky fingers on one in the review-atorium. And even then I had to fight, persuade and jollify every Olympus contact I had. It seems every man, beast and journalist wanted a P5. So, what’s so special? I know it has nothing to do with photography and camera technology, but this little number sure pulls the heart strings in the retro stakes. Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the legendary PEN F film camera, the PEN E-P5 is a digital update...

Nikon has announced the Coolpix P7800, which sits at the top of its compact camera lineup, replacing last year’s P7700 as flagship zoom camera. The P7800 is extremely similar to its nominal predecessor, the most notable change being the addition of an electronic viewfinder. For those with a short memory, P-series cameras prior to the P7700 had optical viewfinders. The P7700 got rid of that entirely, but gave users a fully articulating LCD in...

In the last several years, we’ve seen a rapid shift in software and app interface design, from 3-D and skeuomorphic to flat and minimal. Although this trend has become nearly ubiquitous, let’s take a moment to consider how we got here and what influence it’s having on interface design as a whole. Additionally, I’ll share some tips and considerations on designing flat interfaces. Interfaces on a Windows Phone 8 and Apple’s iOS 7. What...

Designing For Emotion With Hover Effects

Of the many factors that must be considered in Web design, emotional interaction is an important, but frequently neglected, component. In the real world, we experience the sensual interaction of design all the time. Reflect for a moment on the emotional engagement of slipping behind the wheel of a powerful luxury car: the welcoming embrace of the driving seat, the tactile experience of running your hands over the leather on the steering...

I’m ready to start accepting Patio, Deck or Garden Space Shots  for the September 2013 PFRE photographer of the month contest. The photo to the right is last year’s winner of this theme (Jason Roehner, Tempe, AZ ). For those not familiar with this series of monthly competitions take a look at the Contest page that describes all the rules and the whole contest process. For a look at previous monthly winners and all the yearly winners go to the best-of-the-best page (on the top menu bar click “Featuredâ€). Please note new rule #15: “Submissions are final. At some point, every photo shoot comes to an end. Every portrait session, cookbook shoot, family vacation, ad campaign, college graduation, wedding, and photo essay eventually gets to the point when it’s time to put the camera down and see what you’ve got. Congratulations– You’ve just become a photo editor. To be clear, I’m not talking about correction or manipulation in Lightroom, Photoshop or any of the other image editing software packages available. I’m talking about the task of sitting down with the 367 images that you’ve just...

Recently there has been several big changes in the way the US handles same-sex marriage.  Now, I don’t write about politics, which I think is lucky for all of us in the same way that I don’t cook is lucky for the people I live with.  I write about photography and people.  I also don’t make predictions about laws and the world, mainly because I’m not sure what I’m going to have for dinner tonight and as I write this, it’s almost 8pm (cereal is always a safe bet at this point though), but I will say this: as same-gender marriage becomes more accepted...

Alma, a Tale of Violence, is a web-documentary co-produced by Upian, Arte and Agence Vu, presenting “a raw and poignant testimony from a former member of one of Guatemala’s most violent gangs,” say the producers. “A reformed criminal, Alma tries to resume a normal life despite facing death threats from her former gang associates.”
Dewever Plana and Fougère will receive a €8000 cash prize at a ceremony on 04 September at the Visa pour l’Image photojournalism festival in Perpignan.

An interesting if, …eccentric…list. But no question that there are some worthy picks here. And I’m very glad to see the Oly E330 here, the original “solution looking for a problem” per DPR’s review of old. Notable in this list is the predominance of Sony and Oly—“outsiders” that needed to innovate relentlessly in order to compete with the big two—and we are all better for it now. As for omissions or changes—well, we all have our opinions I’m sure. I would have picked the Oly c8080, perhaps the first digicam to give...

Oliver Zieliski took me up on my offer to translate my free e-book, What Realtors Need To Know About Photography. It’s now available in German on Oliver’s site. All you English speakers, don’t be intimidated by the fact that Oliver’s site is in German. If you use the Chrome browser it will recognize what language the site it in, knowing that you normally read English and offer to always translate the site for you. Pretty cool, this helps remove language barriers. I ask Oliver to tell us about his business and real estate photography in Germany. Here is what Oliver has to say: In...

Following its 15 years of success in England, ILFORD’s mail-in black and white film processing and printing will now be more readily available to North American customers thanks to the new lab in San Clemente, California. As digital photography has taken over, most local labs can no longer provide processing of true black and white film, nor can they print on real silver gelatin paper, instead opting to print black and white images on color paper....

Sigma’s 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM has generated a lot of excitement since its announcement in April, as the fastest zoom ever made for SLRs. Designed for use on APS-C / DX format cameras, it offers a 28-54mm equivalent zoom range, and promises similar depth of field control to an F2.8 zoom on full frame. But can an F1.8 zoom really work? Read our detailed review to find out. Click here for our in-depth review of the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM Click...

If you have a digital SLR and don’t want to blow two grand on an underwater housing, check out the alternative the folks at Digital Camera World came up with. Just put your camera into a clean fish tank, attach a remote shutter release cable, lower the tank into the water, and fire away. Naturally, this only works in calm water, so don’t take it into the ocean unless you fancy buying a new camera. Though the site mentions you have to take a lot...

Awesome post but all three of those photographs shown, and every other one on the photographer’s site under “Storms,” is of American extreme weather, not Canadian, Mexican, Nicaraguan, or any other country on the continent. Since that is the case why are you mentioning the continent?? Sorry, but the increasingly common habit of referring to the continent every time something America specific is mentioned is getting very old, and annoying. People that write for a living should not be making such obvious mistakes. Source Article from...

by Sarah Hipwell. The above shot at 1/20sec at f22 I brought two cameras on a recent vacation to France. My trusty DSLR and my new fab Sony RX100. I don’t normally bring a tripod on holidays but this time I wanted to get some decent video footage. I also wanted to experiment with a variety of (still) exposures for HDR work and to get a nice sunset (low light shot). With such an array of tripods on offer, how do you decide which one to buy? I narrowed my search to 5 key features: Low cost Size – folded & extended Portability Lightweight Sturdy enough to...

One of my favourite times for taking photos is at twilight. Especially during the spring and summer, the seasons when the light is at its most magical at this time of evening. I’ve always liked the idea that great photography happens on the edges. Twilight, the transition between night and day, is an edge. While the low light levels can be technically challenging, the reward in terms of quality of light are well worth it. I think of it as the ‘magic hour’. You may also see it referred to as the blue hour, a reference to the colour of the ambient light as...

Ever heard the term “labored metaphor”? At least eventually, once the people becoming rich can’t breathe or are attacked by those that can’t breathe, something will be done to change environmental regulations even in China. Then low wage work will move to another country where the environment can be destroyed without much notice. Eventually, when an iPhone or a digital point and shoot camera costs $2,000 we’ll be paying the true cost of an item. Hopefully there will be some animals, trees, clean water, and non-cancer-filled humans around to enjoy a sustainable...
