Ethan Tweedie, on the Big Island of Hawaii is expanding into property video. Ethan uploaded his first property video to YouTube just last week. He said: It took forever to get this done! It was like a very difficult homework assignment on top of all my normal work! It was a huge learning process, and I could not have done it without Malia’s help! Malia Campbell took a break from her shooting schedule in Seattle to help Ethan get up to speed with property video. I was kidding Ethan that I saw a couple of moves in this video that look like the ones Malia does, but Ethan pointed out that...

Your challenge this week is to take and share a photo on the theme of ‘Soft Light’. Earlier in the week Andrew Gibson wrote a post on the topic of using Soft Light in a variety of types of photos to create a magic feel in your images. Using soft light is a technique that can be used in many types of photography including portraiture, landscapes, macro and much more so you can submit any type of photo – as long as it was taking in soft light. Note: also check out our article this week on taking natural light portraits in the shade which will also produce...

By Street Photographer Eric Kim A good photo asks more questions than provides answers 35mm as a focal length is generally ideal for most street photographers. 28mm is too wide (most people don’t get close enough) and 50mm is too tight. My keeper ratio : one decent shot a month, one shot I am proud of in a year. “When in doubt, click.†– Charlie Kirk When in doubt, take a step closer. You will become a better photographer by asking people what they don’t like about your shots (rather than what they like). A harsh and constructive critique is better than...

Connect smartphone reviews are written with the needs of photographers in mind. We focus on camera features, performance and image quality. A 41-megapixel camera on a phone. You’d assume that was a typo if Nokia hadn’t already unveiled the 41-megapixel 808 Pureview last year, a technological tour-de-force that escaped mainstream appeal thanks largely to its orphaned Symbian operating system. With the Lumia 1020, Nokia has brought the innovative downsampling approach it debuted in the 808’s camera to a Windows Phone with a more relevant OS. While zoom lenses that span from...

So much of what we do is defined by the elements that embody the concept. The three elements of the exposure triangle help us understand “proper†exposure. Every light source has three distinct qualities (color, quality, direction). Even the physical tools at our disposal can be broken down to a simple trifecta– light, lens, and camera. Being able to break something down into its components helps the beginner by giving them a road map– a series of steps that simplifies the process and makes it easier to understand. With enough repetition, that...

One of the easiest ways to start shooting portraits is to use natural light. There’s no added expense of buying speedlites or strobes, or even continuous lighting. You don’t have to decide where to put the lights, because let’s face it, nature has decided for you. There are still challenges however, and those challenges must be overcome to successfully pull off a natural light portrait. One of the biggest challenges is what to do when the natural light just is not pleasing. Maybe it’s midday sun and the light is too harsh, or maybe it’s later in...

Nikon has patented a technology that can electronically adjust a camera’s low-pass (AA) filter based on the situation. By using a liquid crystal panel, the AA filter can either be turned on and off, or set to ‘normal’ or ‘high’ intensity. The first design could allow for a digital SLR to have its AA filter turned off at the press of the button. The second design would have a mild anti-aliasing effect for stills, and a stronger...

It would take a rather hefty octocopter to lift a DSLR, and you’d not want to trust a DSLR to an R/C that has dizzy spells and drops everything in the river, treetop, or ravine. Worse, what if some backwoods ‘Billy, confusing it for a chicken hawk or Revenuer drone looking for stills and meth-works, uses it for musket practice? The things do make a nasty amount of noise anyway. “Derned thayng ruined my afternoon nap.” Source Article from...

Yahoo has released a hefty update to its Flickr app for iOS. Improved capture and editing tools make it easier for mobile photographers customize their shots. Not yet available for other platforms, the latest update for Flickr’s iOS app is packed with features usually reserved for dedicated (and paid) capture and editing applications. Flickr now allows users to lock separate focus and exposure points on the capture screen with a two finger tap. In addition, users can view the filters live in the viewfinder. When you are ready to edit, you can customize the exposure using the...

This issue always comes up, the one of being that you’re only as good as the tools you use. When you also consider that skills matter, and where do they fit? It’s really not a blurry line. How many of you have shot a great image on a DSLR, only to hear others comment along the lines of “Well, yeah. That’s a big camera, of course.”? But shoot something great with a pocket cam or phone and it’s “Man. He’s got the skills.” Let me tell you something, it was always about the skills. You see, I could do a lot of things with an iPhone, but I...

The layout is the foundation of your website. It guides the user through the sections and tells them what is most important. It also sets the aesthetic of the website. Therefore, you need to carefully think through how you lay out content. An original, creative layout goes a long way to improving the user experience of a website, although not letting your creativity get in the way of usability is important. As usual, we have to put...

I recently got the following reader question: How do photographer’s protect themselves from properties not being ready to be photographed on scheduled dates/times? I’m working on a project where I’m about to schedule my FOURTH trip for my client. Next time I work with this client, I’ll include an “as-is†clause in the quote as well as a mention of subsequent travel fees. I’m losing money on this job. I’m not making a fuss because this is an amazing client. It’s my fault for not protecting myself ahead of time with an “as-is†production clause and the inclusion of travel...

by Elena Wilkins If you ever had my family as your clients, you could feel a tad lost at how to photograph us. Why? Well, there are three of us, and we come in a wide range of skin tones—from my fairly light skin, to my husband’s, pretty dark and handsome; our child fits right in between. We are a true colored family—a perfect fusion of all tones—a photographer’s conundrum, or, maybe even, a nightmare! Who do you expose for? The mom? The child? Or the father? All three of us would need different camera settings… or a few tricks to make magic happen....

As the first hybrid smartphone and interchangeable lens camera, the Samsung Galaxy NX certainly cut a unique profile when we first looked at it in June of this year. The Galaxy NX merges the features of Samsung smartphones, including a huge 4.8-inch touch LCD and 3G/4G/Wi-Fi connectivity, with a NX-mount ILC with a 20.3MP APS-C sensor, hybrid AF system, and 8.6 fps burst mode. At long last, the Galaxy NX has been given a price: $1,599.99 body only, or...

Third party OEM is nothing new, so long as they have the tools and talent to meet the clients specs and stick to them. Who cares what the origination address is? In my search for vintage lenses, I remember an article (for which I can’t find the link), that the majority of early Japanese lens manufacturers were all based a stones throw from one another, and consequently, copied each other. In the 80’s Sear’s had a few good lenses made by Tokina, and it requires some research to know which ones were gems hiding under the name. Vivitar was well known for utilizing many...

Hey Rad, the closest feature you’ll get with the Transcend is the ‘Shoot and View’ mode, where you capture an image and it shows up on a phone or tablet right after it’s taken. Unfortunately, this takes a long time (18 seconds) and the image is not saved—it’s just a preview. The Eye-Fi would be the better bet, as images can instantly show up on a phone/tablet, laptop, or online on the Eye-Fi View cloud page. Furthermore, those images are truly uploaded, not just a thumbnail preview. For Comic Con, I think the Eye-Fi would suit you quite well. Secondly,...

Ricoh has announced the Ricoh HZ15, a 15x compact superzoom that will only be sold in Europe. Though it isn’t sold under the Pentax name, it bears a striking resemblance to Optio compacts of recent years. It features a 16 megapixel CCD sensor, 24-360mm equivalent zoom lens, 720p HD video and sensor-shift ‘SR’ shake reduction (terminology definitely borrowed from Pentax cameras). Though not a remarkable compact superzoom, it provides some...

So from what I read on the comment, you must remember to use the flash indirectly, pointing to the ceil instead your subject, especially when you have nice white ceil and walls 🙂 I just need one camera for my work, and this is actually a D300, that I plan to change for a D300s when it will fail, but seems it’s totally indestructible! I use it since 4 years now, it’s totally dependable and nearly every shoot is perfect. And I have another camera for everyday’s photography (maybe the most important part for me), it happens this is a X100s, but that’s not that important....

On Creative Leadership

I have spent nearly a decade experimenting with a single goal in mind: to create scalable, predictably insightful, inspirational environments. I have led creative teams in these environments, and I’m currently doing it as the Director of Web Interface and Development at Astonish (a digital marketing company in Rhode Island, US). It hasn’t been easy, because forcing inspiration is impossible. You have to use finesse and let it come to you....

Soft light is beautiful. It is a gift from nature that helps you create interesting images using high quality light. You’ll find soft light in the shade on a sunny day, during twilight after the sun has set, or all around you on a cloudy day. Let’s take a look at these two photos to see the difference between hard light and soft light. I took the first in direct sunlight in the afternoon. The light is hard and it’s not a good a photo. The contrast is too high – it’s not possible to get good detail in both highlights and shadows. I resolved the problem...

by Matthias Hombauer and Karl Blümel from “The Analog Docsâ€. We are two professional music and wedding photographers and we shoot digital when necessary. However, we clearly see the point of going back to analog like a lot of pros are doing nowadays. In this post, we would like to discuss the benefits as well as the drawbacks of film photography from our point of view. Since we love film, we decided to start our own project named “Analog Docs“, where we exclusively use analog medium format cameras. The following points are true for all analog camera...

The Pentax K-500 is a stripped-down version of the K-50, lacking the weather-sealed body and electronic level of that model, but offering the same 16MP sensor and basic ergonomics. It’s an attractive entry-level option, and as soon as a production-quality sample arrived in our office we started shooting with it. Click the links below to view our gallery of real-world samples taken...

From the air, the landscape of Texas’ vast feedlots and oil fields is by turns bleak and surreal. Photographer Mishka Henner aimed to capture the contrasts and intense colors of these landscapes in a collection of work titled ‘Feedlots.’ By stitching together hundreds of satellite images, he created large, detailed prints documenting the dynamism of these locations...

It’s good, that a value price is happening. It’s not good, to assume important, basic, benefits can be acceptably removed. It’s good, that Sony is (perhaps) shaking up the market; *and* have gotten close to providing comprehensive benefits, from one system. It’s not good, they haven’t yet pulled it off, and with this camera, their not even trying. You see, I recognize, its good benefits; it’s just that they are stifled, by the lack of a benefits balance. I think this form factor is fine; if it were done right. It’s not. Though, a retro look, might be...

Analyzing Network Characteristics Using JavaScript And The DOM, Part 2

In Part 1 of this series, we had a look at how the underlying protocols of the Web work, and how we can use JavaScript to estimate their performance characteristics. In this second part, we’ll look at DNS, IPv6 and the new W3C specification for the NavigationTiming API. DNS Explained Every device attached to the Internet is identified by a numeric address known as an IP address. The two forms of IP addresses...

Several of the PFRE photographer of the month contest entries for August had some very noticeable color fringing (also called chromatic aberration) so I thought it would be useful to do a post on the subject. Chromatic aberration comes from lens imperfections and is frequently present on wide angle lenses that don’t have the newer coating, so depending on what lenses you have you may have never seen it or it many be in many of your photos and you just expect it because it’s always there. I know about the subject mostly because I have a Sigma 8mm Fisheye, that I’ve used for 360s, that...

What a whopper! It looks like a compact digital camera but sure as hell offers far more than your average CDC. The 60x zoom runs all the way up to a 35 SLR equivalent of 1200mm but — note this! — it begins from a super wide 20mm equivalent. That means you can shoot close shots of sports players from the sidelines and then cover cramped interiors with the same camera. You can also buy a 1.7x tele conversion lens that will take the focal length to 2040mm! Beat that! The maximum image size is 4608×3456 pixels, large enough to make a 34x29cm print. Video can be...

It’s done.  You survived it.  It was the longest day of your photography career, you’re exhausted, and all you can think about is how right I was (it’s cool—I get that a lot).  But…….You. Did. It.  And chances are you didn’t get locked in a bathroom,  or miss the kiss, or have a complete equipment failure, or faint face-first into the cake.  You shot a wedding.  What’s next?  Back-up everything.  Possibly several times As no-brainer as this is, when I shoot portraits, I’m not a diligent about it as I should be.  I’m more of a...

I gave up on D since a long time, I prefer A. D is not the door to heaven anymore, and A is to my eyes better in technology. I am old fashion in many things, but not when it concerns cameras. Facebook has started rolling out shared photo albums to select users of their social network. Currently, photo albums are limited to the user that created it, but shared albums will allow users to create a gallery that can be used by as many as 50 friends, each of whom can upload up to 200 photos. The album will have three privacy settings, which include public, contributors, and friends of contributors. According to Bob Baldwin, the Facebook engineer that spearheaded the project, the problem with the ‘old’ way of sharing pictures is that ‘right now, if you were at a...

Even fewer leaves in Tokyo. Asia really isn’t happy with its nature. Where there is nature, put a fence around it and make people pay to enter. That, or advertise the hell out of it so that a nice nature hike trail entertains as many people as a small city. I’m sick of living here for the reason that people and walls and concrete are really all that exists. Yes, there are aberrations: Hokkaido, Northern China, etc., and so on, but overall, Asia is simply nasty… unless you just love millions upon millions upon millions of people, and noise and cars and pollution and the...

Please note that this is not a technical review of the Fuji x100s. There are many great reviews already written by photographers who are technically more savvy than I am. This is simply an account of my experience as I make my first steps away from a DSLR system. I finally did it! I left the DSLR and lenses behind and boarded a plane to France, via Iceland, with one camera and a fixed focal length lens. I can hear some of you think out loud: “Iceland without all your gear? It’s the middle of August here in Atlanta, and that means that the kids are back in school. It’s a bit earlier than most places, but regardless of where you live the rites of fall will soon be in full swing. Here in the South, one of those rites plays itself out every week– not in cathedrals of brick and stained glass windows, but in those made from steel beams, cement bleachers, and 6,400 square yards of well-tended grass. Yes, it’s high school football season. And in the South that means an almost religious zealotry. If you think I’m kidding,...

Michael says: I work with my wife Nory who has studied lighting over the past 6 months so we now work together full time two other assistants for some shoots. Nory opens up the video, she is also an agent. We shoot for a lot of interior designers, builders and architects through out Florida and have shot some of the most expensive homes, along with private celebrity homes that were not...

This week we explored the idea of Negative Space in composing images so now it is time to put that into practice with our weekly photographic challenge. Your challenge is to take and share an image that uses Negative Space well. You can do this by taking a photo of any genre, portraits, macro, street or landscape… anything you like. If you’d like another tutorial on Negative Space check this one out too. Once you’ve taken your ’2nd Point of Interest’ photos upload your best ones to your favourite photo sharing site either share a link to them even better...

Missed the sunset but sat in the cold until I got this bird flying over. 4 shots layered in PS. “Photography Compulsion Syndrome†– tell me if you can relate to any of the following scenarios: when traveling you’ve raced around at dusk, narrowly escaping a speeding ticket, trying to find the best spot to shoot the sunset you’ve skipped dinner, or left your friends having dessert, while you go outside in the rain cause there was a great shot you just had to get you’ve been on regular travel tours and were constantly frustrated because they never gave...

Designing For Digital Products

In digital culture, we are beginning to think of our output as products and of our clients as users. “Products†might be websites, apps or communities, and they might be created by startups, agencies or a couple of people at a hackathon. This shift mainly means that we have gotten serious about asking how to better serve users, which reflects a significant change in the designer’s skill set. Designers will use the same tools they have...

The PFRE Book Of The Month for September is John Harrington’s, Best Business Practices For Photographers. Aaron Leitz first recommended this book here on the blog many years ago. He said: I highly recommend John Harrington’s book, “Best Practices for Photographers.†Though it’s aimed more towards the established editorial/advertising/commercial photographer, there is tons of great stuff for RE shooters as well. Harrington is a real-deal pro photographer. Especially revealing and informative are the book’s many “case studies†covering a wide variety of topics where Harrington...

For this image of Lower Falls in Letchworth State Park in New York, I knew I wanted a creamy look to the falls. They were flowing well so I knew a moderately slow shutter speed would give me what I wanted. I also knew as I composed it that I wanted the falls framed by some of the gorgeous colors of the fall foliage. I set my exposure based on two things- I wanted a slow shutter speed and I wanted deep depth of field. EOS 5D Mark III, EF 70-300 f/4-5.6L, ISO 100, f/25, .3″. A good friend of mine is passionate about photography, and she recently acquired a...

Perhaps one of the most important things we do as portrait photographers is preserve memories. While the digital era and its ever-evolving technology have made it easier to ensure that the photos we take today will last longer than their analog counterparts, there are still things we can do to help preserve memories captured before the advent of the pixel. Several years ago, I came across a sizable collection of very old family photos and started scanning them. Unfortunately, some had already been damaged to one degree or another. Fading, creasing,...

I suspect Apple is doing this partly on a purpose, and by design — delaying important camera support — because it is in their best interest that as many people as possible use iPhone as the primary snap tool. When camera isn’t properly supported, people will be reluctant to utilise it fully and will feel frustration, which they believe is due to camera manufacturer not doing their job (with Apple) properly — not the other way round. Otherwise, Apple won’t be able to brag around iPhone is the most popular “camera” on Flickr.Adobe, however, is in neutral position...

As camera manufacturers attempt to counter the onslaught of a smartphone-in-every-pocket mobile photography movement taking the place of point-and-shoot cameras, some solutions seek to combine the two devices. Thanks in part to crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter and Indiegogo, smaller companies and individuals are also proposing crossover gadgets that integrate mobile and traditional cameras. We pulled together a handful of these ideas — now in production or still in development — for your interest (and, possibly, amusement). Are these technological wonders that...

WebKit Has Implemented srcset, And It’s A Good Thing

WebKit has made some serious news by finally implementing the srcset attribute. As Chair of the W3C’s Responsive Images Community Group, I’ve been alternately hoping for and dreading this moment for some time now. It turns out to be good news for all involved parties—the users browsing the Web, most of all. As with all matters pertaining to “responsive imagesâ€: it’s complicated, and it can be hard keeping...

I’d like publicly thank Scott Hargis for the time he puts into the judging and giving feedback comments on the PFRE Photographer of the month entries. If you look at the comments on this months contest contestants, you’ll see that he’s commented on almost all of the 32 entries this month. This takes a lot of time, and the comments are insightful As I told Scott I’ve only met a few people that can talk as analytically about images as he can. One of the reasons I loved Art History class is that the professor I had talked about images like Scott does. She talked about space, a lines and...

I’ve always said that the best Photoshop is the Photoshop you never even notice. I encourage my students to get it right in the camera, because my belief is that imaging software is a tool, not a crutch. To quote commercial/portrait photographer Zack Arias, “If you find yourself saying, ‘I’ll just fix that later in Photoshop,’ stop what you’re doing and slap yourself as hard as you can.â€Â When people look at my portraits, I want them to see the personality. I want them to see the emotion. I want them to remember a moment in time. What I...

I mean there’s nothing wrong with this problem – after all you are still getting a photograph of one spectacular subject, but could you have gotten more? Done something else?...

I don’t know about you, but I was never much of a math student. I needed a tutor in high school for both geometry and physics. I chose a double major in college (Journalism/English) that required no math. I practiced law for fourteen years, where any math I needed was either pretty easy or done on a calculator. Even when I ditched my briefcase for a camera bag and embarked on a new career, I felt pretty secure in the knowledge that confusing math had no place in the world of photography. And then the Inverse Square Law reared its ugly head. It didn’t...

Lines are all around us in photography. Conscious use of line can add depth or dynamism to your composition. Let me show you what I mean. Take a look at the following image: It’s an okay landscape. l like it, but it’s nothing special. Maybe what it lacks is a sense of depth. Now compare it to this landscape: See how three-dimensional it looks by comparison? The lines in the composition create the illusion of depth. They converge as they disappear into the distance creating a sense of distance and space. I’ve marked the lines so you can see them clearly: Not...
