Oh, he used a Leica S2, so it must be art….. Leaving aside sarcasm and cheap shots, which given the prentention of this series are all to easy, from an art perspective I don’t see much value either. There seems to be no coherent vision, just randomness. And absolutely no oiginality of expression. Whatever, he’s not hurting anyone. Source Article from...

Mid 1990s, I was given a Logitech Pixtura for a project (made by Kodak, and similar to the Apple digital camera). Whilst in vacation in Yosemite with my mother, I took 144 photos, the max it could hold. On the last day, to free up memory to take a few more shots, I selected DELETE, but because the camera had no display (other than a frame counter), there was no prompt, so I had no idea I had selected the wrong option. I erased all 144 photos, including some once in a life time shots, such as a chipmunk that hopped right up to me. I got a close up of his lovely face. Distraught, back at the...

Being a photojournalist is inherently competitive. Sometimes, you are competing against other professionals in your area, sometimes you are competing against the kid with an iPhone who happened to get to the crime scene 30 minutes before you. For Eric Thayer (@ericthayer) and Joshua Lott (@joshualott), the competition is personal and public. It started as an informal battle of classic one-up-manship. The two photographers were hanging out, taking photos of the same scenes and uploading them to Instagram. When a friend suggested that they make it an official face-off, Lott and Hayer...

“Form ever follows function. This is the law.†So said the architect and “father of skyscrapers†Louis Sullivan. For architects not wishing to crush hundreds of innocent people under the weight of a colossal building, this rule of thumb is pretty good. In design, you should always lead with function, and allow form to emerge as a result. If you were to lead with form, making your skyscraper look pretty would be easier, but at the...

Simon Maxwell, our man in London, has just released a brand new video tutorial on how sensor size affects the effective focal length of your lens. This subject is a huge issue when you are getting started in interior photography in that the less expensive DSLRs that a beginner will want to purchase will have a telephoto effect on the focal length on your lens because the sensor size is smaller than a Full Frame sensor. So if you are just getting into real estate photography you need to watch and understand Simon’s tutorial. Cropped (small) sensors are why 18-55mm kit lenses that come on...

With my background being in classic style studio portraiture (aka “boringâ€), and 25 years experience photographing portraits and weddings, I have a few tips up my sleeve for you. If you’ve never done a family or group portrait before don’t be intimidated. Be honest with the family and tell they you’re just learning, I bet they’ll be willing participants to help you out and they get some nice photos in exchange. With a little planning, doing a family portrait should be fun for both you, and the family you’re photographing. Here are 10 quick tips to...

The Pose of a Generation. The next time you are out shooting street photography, try this.  Put your camera down at your side and just look around for awhile.  Watch things happen and let moments develop in front of your eyes. It sounds simple but it goes against our natural instincts to throw the camera in front of our face every time we see something remotely interesting.  That is especially true with digital. The camera is the tool, but it can get in the way sometimes. The camera can be easy to hide behind and it can become a crutch.  It’s so easy to rev...

the price is ok, some pay 3200$ for a similar lens only, in M-mount. The problem for me is that for the price we pay, we get a bitty of camera and a lot of lens, good shots, and still no VF. If you want a VF for it, it costs hella lot more. For me, an EVF and 10% bigger in size had done the job, even for the price it costs. But, on the end, you only have a P&S for tourists, with all the disadvantages of those cameras, and the sole advantage of a good sensor and good shot. If that is worth the money you pay, is up to you to decide. As you said, just look at the price, problem solved....

Key Ingredients To Make Your App Go Viral
By Carla White

Apps, Strategy, Techniques

A viral app is the highest achievement on iTunes and Google Play. It’s an app that customers eagerly share across the Internet, through social networks, email, chat and word of mouth. It’s like rocket fuel, and it is the best case scenario for an app developer because word of mouth is far more powerful than any paid advertising. Ad clutter is everywhere, and people just ignore it. No one trusts ads, and they cost too much for...

In portraiture, negative space is the area around the main subject of your photograph. The portrait above has negative space – it is the dark area around the model. I’ve highlighted it below in green so you can see exactly what I mean: There’s a quote in photography attributed to photojournalist Robert Capa: “If your photographs aren’t good enough, you’re not close enough.†A lot of the time, that’s good advice – many portraits can be improved by getting in closer to the subject, either physically or with a longer lens, so the model dominates the...

We are all familiar with the old refrain, “Those who can, do. Those who can’t, teach. Those who can’t teach, teach gym.â€Â I’m still not sure about that last part, but I think by now we’ve pretty much debunked the middle part. The photography world is full of incredibly successful, highly talented photographers who willingly and eagerly pass along their knowledge and expertise to a new wave of hobbyists, enthusiasts, and professionals. From workshops and photo walks, to seminars and tutorials, there is a lot of solid information to be found. ...

This is an expression of artistic reality. The quality, from the thumbnails, seems quite good. More importantly, these are derivative works of merit. Sometimes the photographer chooses a specific medium for printing, other times he or she is forced to use a particular process by technology limitations. A black and white print may be chosen for it’s impact – but often it was the only available technology for prints. For all of history humans have lived in a color-filled world, but for more than half of photographic history our prints have been black and white by limitation, not by...

Scott, did your boss fire you today? I don’t see anyone glorifying film over digital. I don’t know what the heck you’re referring to, but I think you need to go back and reread the posts, then count to 10, and come back and apologize for your rant. And oh, by the way, we had lots of ways to view photographs before the web. Magazines, museums, making multiple prints from a negative and sending them to people, projecting slides on a big screen (way more engrossing than viewing images on a little 17 or 20″ monitor, btw). Digital is great, but don’t think it’s...

The B-Grip (short for “belt gripâ€) is a way to carry your camera on a belt, rather than around your neck. The camera is carried around in the holster with a quick release plate that’s easily accessed when you’re ready to shoot. It’s best paired with the hand strap also available, and it is this pair which I was sent for review by a local reseller. I tested this grip out on the busy weekend of an anime convention which I attend every year and usually take about 1000 photos a day for each of the two days. For Saturday I used the B-Grip. For Sunday I...

Useful InDesign Scripts And Plugins To Speed Up Your Work
By Alexander Charchar

Few applications feel as complete as Adobe’s InDesign. First released in 1999 as a direct attack against the then-industry standard, Quark, the page-layout application has been made faster and more feature-rich with each iteration. But even the best applications lack some features. Luckily, Adobe realized this some years ago and opened the doors to allow designers to expand this beloved set of tools through plugins. Many...

Oliver obviously has previous experience with  shooting and editing video. It’s relatively long (5:00) but is it interesting and easily holds attention the whole time. Makes great use of time-lapse. Earlier this week we published a post on composition of images in which author Matt Dutile introduced the concept of adding a second point of interest to your photos to give your image a natural viewing progression. Adding a secondary point of interest can not only add more interest in your image but reinforce a theme or perspective argues Matt. A number of people commented that they’d not considered this technique before so we thought this might be a fun weekly challenge – taking photos that not only have a single point of interest – but which have a second...

In music they say the spaces between the notes are just as important as the notes themselves. Similarly in photography, it can be the spaces that are not in the light that add impact to an image. If it were not for the shadow cast by the dirt bike, it might be difficult to tell it was off the ground. Shadows help tell a story and enhance the mood and visual power of a photograph. In fact, they can be so interesting, that they “overshadow†the subject itself! By focussing your attention on the shadows, you can create beautiful compositions full of contrast,...

@Sdaniella “evf is fine for smaller sensors prevalent in video/tv cameras where dof is much deeper and thus closer to ‘focus free’ and far less demanding on any AF system, even CD-AF, particularly in good (tv broadcast, studio, arena, stadium, or day-) light one could spend most of one’s time panning and tracking, and less time with any AF faltering when contrast is quite high that is common to well lit scenarios already listed above but once one ventures into low light, with much wider apertures, the dim lower contrast bogs down every video/tv system such that AF is...

InDesign Scripts And Plugins To Speed Up Your Work
By Alexander Charchar

Few applications feel as complete as Adobe’s InDesign. First released in 1999 as a direct attack against the then-industry standard, Quark, the page-layout application has been made faster and more feature-rich with each iteration. But even the best applications lack some features. Luckily, Adobe realized this some years ago and opened the doors to allow designers to expand this beloved set of tools through plugins. Many designers...

In part I and part II of this series we learned the photo workshop is typically one where the instructor concentrates on delivering an intense teaching/learning experience at a location conducive to enhancing that goal. In comparison is the photo tour where the delivery is all about exotic or exciting locations with a photo tour leader putting you in the right place at the right time, and might provide minimal formal instruction. Located somewhere between the tour and workshop is the photo seminar. More often than not the seminar combines the best attributes of...

Along with lighting, subject, perspective, composition is one of the fundamental tools to creating better images. It’s one of the easier ones to begin applying to your own photography as well. Here are a few tips on improving your composition, with examples from a recent fitness photo shoot. 1. Rule of Thirds You’ve probably heard this one beat to death, but the rule of thirds is one of the fundamental keys in creating stronger compositions. It involves dividing an image into nine equal grids at the thirds. By placing your subject on the line of a third, or at...

Sometimes, the best thing that you can do creatively is to give yourself limitations. For filmmaker Jason van Genderen, that meant putting down his camera and picking up his smartphone. Van Genderen (@Jasonvangenderen on Instagram and Twitter) prides himself on being a “pocket filmmaker.” Living in Terrigal, Austrailia, van Genderen spends his days running a creative agency and whenever he gets a chance, he uses smartphones to create films. Recently, he gained notoriety when his documentary Red Earth Hip Hop that he made for a Nokia competition was featured at the...

In my 20 years in photography, I’ve seen a lot of different assignments teachers have given their students. Most I have heard, or been given myself from time to time, have centered around learning to use the camera. Things like “Use Only One Exposure Modeâ€, “Use Only One Lensâ€, or “Use One Aperture Settingâ€. The most interesting to me, from a photographic standpoint, involved learning to see. The reason I say this is that simple camera use can be easily learned. It’s basic math when you boil it down. But learning to see creatively,...

By Lori Peterson Booking teens and tweens for photo shoots is always fun. They have so much energy and enthusiasm and it really shows once they step in front of the camera. For that time when they are in front of your camera they feel like they are celebrities. That can be good for fragile egos and low self-esteem, especially when their hair and makeup is done and they look absolutely gorgeous. Teens and tweens of today have seen enough modelling shows that they know the drill for posing. Some of them even have that runway walk down too! It’s very easy as a...

There is no more enslaved than the one who claims to be free. Racism is the same, most of time, those who claim to be victims are more racist than those they accuse. Racism, intergrism, blasphemy, heresy, all those things are most of time excuses used for just anything. Those who use those words are generally those that hide behind them to be allowed to do things that wil bring others in jail right away. I do not give examples, but look around you, some break, rob people, steal, destroy, break, and if you say something, your are mister bad guy, you are a racist. So, let’s stay with the...

Fire the AD company that came up with the idea and blacklist it in the industry. 2. Sentence the creative AD director who approved the scheme. 3. Charge the BB gun and spear users with cheating and endangering the public. 4. Fine LG for nuisance in a public place. 5. If you’ve developed mobile applications or have just started building one, then you probably realize that marketing should be as much of an ongoing concern as the product’s design and development. After all, what’s the point in creating a beautiful, valuable app if no one knows about it? Assuming that promotion on Google Play or Apple’s App Store will take your app from beta to bestseller is… well, magical thinking. In reality, most...

By Richard Smith It was during a trip to Cenderawasih Bay on Papua’s north coast in Indonesia that I really got into photographing reef fish. This unique bay has been cut off from the outside world by large landmasses several times over the past several million years, and subsequently new species have evolved in isolation. This environment fascinated me as both a marine biologist and underwater photographer. I set out to document as many of the indigenous fishes as I could during my once in a lifetime visit.  Thus began my love of reef fish portraiture.  Why Photograph Reef Fish?...

By Lori Peterson There seems to be a constant war waged between photographers who sell prints and the “shoot and burn†photographers that give their clients a disc with edited images. Photographers who sell prints think that photographers who sell (or ***gasp***) give away their images on a CD are devaluing photographers and photography as a whole. Photographers who provide discs (whether given or purchased) to their clients think they are just keeping up with technology and client demand. So, who is right in this war pitting photographer against photographer?...

A Guide To Designing Touch Keyboards (With Cheat Sheet)
By Christian Holst
August 13th, 2013

Touch devices have rightfully been praised for generally being much more intuitive than the decades-old computer mouse and keyboard. Users interact directly with touch interfaces, which narrows the gap between human act and software response. Yet typing on mobile devices — in particular on smartphones — is quite the horror story. It’s slow, painful and error-prone. The obvious culprits are keyboard character...

The Evolution Of Tours/Marketing Systems For Home Marketing August 12th, 2013 Presenting a property online is at the very center of real estate marketing. The options for doing that online presentation have increased enormously since they first became available in about 2000. Should real estate photographers provide tours? Here are some basics: What’s a tour? Historically the term virtual tour meant a series of 360 views. Nowadays the tours have evolved into multi-featured marketing site/systems. A tour is effectively a page or site dedicated to marketing a property. We should perhaps...

If you look at some of the most famous photographs in history, such as Dorothea Lange’s Migrant Mother, Steve McCurry’s Afghan Girl, or much of Irving Penn’s work, you might notice there’s one thing that they have in common, a powerful emotion in the main subject’s eyes. While this is far from a steadfast rule, if you’re doing portraiture, street photography, or photojournalism, catching a powerful expression in the eyes can be the difference between a mediocre photograph and the best photo you’ve ever taken. If you watch a person’s eyes and wait,...

Good up to 87mm, definitely soft at 155mm. Skin tones tend to look posterised at full size. Most shots I looked at were ISO 100 f/5.6. Stopping down might help at the tele end, but if higher ISOs don’t keep up, it might be a camera for bright daylight – as the samples and other commenters suggest. I assume the lens narrows down to f/5.6 quite early. f/4 at 11mm is sharp. I tried downsampling to half size (to just under four megapixels), and I’ll say at that size and ISO 100, most won’t notice the skin tone flaws unless they know what they’re looking for. ISO 400...

This is another example of technology getting out of hand. As I went digital, I had to familiarise myself with all sorts of concepts only to subsequently dispose of most of them, like having twenty two subject modes, none of which are needed for serious photography where the camera operator still knows what he is doing and remains in control. I am not saying that this Sigma device is unnecessary, just that it ought to be in the labs of manufacturers. If one is using high quality equipment where fine tuning to this degree makes sense, for the exorbitant amounts one has to pay, let them get it...

Creating High-Performance Mobile Websites
By James Rosewell
August 12th, 2013
Responsive Design, Techniques
7 Comments
People start to lose interest in a website if they don’t get a response within three seconds. Fulfilling this expectation for mobile phone users requires a different approach to usage analysis, design and testing. This article expands on the techniques that Johan Johansson explains in his article “How to Make Your Websites Faster on Mobile Devices,†published in April 2013. We’ll demonstrate methods to identify how people...

There are several types of photography that are very similar to real estate photography and depending on your geographic location can do one of these types of photography as an extension to a real estate photography business: Yacht’s – See this post. Many PFRE reader do Yacht photography. Luxury Motor Coaches – If you are near a motor home manufacturing company check this out. Airplanes – This is a new discovery for me. Lee Jinks in McAllen, TX who has an extensive background in aviation told me about his experiences breaking into corporate aircraft photography: About two years ago...

by Steven McConnell Do you remember the time you were learning to drive a car? If you’re like most people, it began as a purely technical, logical activity. You had to think about your every move. You were reacting to your environment, rather than anticipating it. Over time, that settled into a form of unconscious competence. You began to drive by feeling the car, rather than thinking about it. Learning to shoot portraiture is similar. Beyond the mechanical, logical world of preoccupation with gear, ISO, f-stops and focal lengths is a realm of feeling your way...

Long Island and Brier Island, along with several much smaller uninhabited islands, form the archipelago that lies right at the tip of Digby Neck, a peninsula that juts into the Bay of Fundy. With a population hovering around 300 residents, Westport, Brier Island’s only village, cannot help but be relaxing. Consequently I recommend the village of Westport as one of the most relaxing three-day summer holiday destinations in Nova Scotia. There is only one access route to Brier Island: drive west on Highway 217 from Digby for about an hour, and two small ferry...

@ MiwokI am guessing, of course, but the guess is based on some of my experience. White Shadow mentions long walks with plenty of food and water. He may mean day walks or he may mean overnight trips. A person traveling with light camera and light camping gear can easily end up with the weights White Shadow mentions. The camera people ask why carry so much. The trekking people ask why carry so much. Same answer could be offered to both. Sometimes the place you want to visit is not at the end of a day trail accessible from a parking lot. When you get there, you want to take a decent picture....

A contribution from Lori Peterson A few years ago I shot a beautiful, heartfelt wedding. The bride’s grandmother had just gotten out of the hospital after a terrible fall. Her grandfather was not doing well, but he was managing the care of her grandmother in addition to taking care of himself. They made it a huge family occasion and created a beautiful, family oriented evening. Celebrations continued to the later hours in the evening and then the bride and groom left to spend their first few days as man and wife. It was a beautiful, perfect day. The images I...

A Guest Post by Jeff Guyer. We love photography. We love our kids. So, it would stand to reason that if we can find a way to combine photography and spending time with our kids it’s a big win, right? Of course it is. If your kids are anything like mine, however, they’ve either already reached a point where they vanish into thin air the moment they even sense a camera coming out of a bag, or will reach that point soon enough. So, how do we enjoy our cherished hobby without abandoning our kids for hours or days at a time? If they’ve grown weary of their time...

Absolute Horizontal And Vertical Centering In CSS

We’ve all seen margin: 0 auto; for horizontal centering, but margin: auto; has refused to work for vertical centering… until now! But actually (spoiler alert!) absolute centering only requires a declared (variable) height and these styles: .Absolute-Center {
margin: auto;
position: absolute;
top: 0; left: 0; bottom: 0; right: 0;
} I’m not the pioneer of this method (yet I have dared to name it Absolute...

Jim Coon, the Broker/Owner of Alleda Real Estate in Bend, Oregon showed me the video he had done for a large ranch property he has listed out in the “Big Sky country†of Central Oregon. As you can see from Jim’s website he lists a lot of huge ranch properties like the Cougar Springs Ranch shown in this video. Jim says the challenge with these large ranch properties is to showcase these large ranch properties in under 3 minutes of video and not put the viewer to sleep. A sequence aerial shots is the  perfect solution, as you can see. I think the aerial shots of this big ranch are...

Over the last couple of weeks we’ve been running ‘Landscapes’ challenges to celebrate the launch of our new Landscape Photography eBook – this week we’re going to continue that by nominating ‘Black and White Landscapes’ as the theme for your challenge. Once again – there’s a section on black and white landscapes in the eBook (see the screen shot of the first page of the section below) but whether you’ve read it or not – we think it’s a fun challenge because many photographers don’t think to take landscapes with out colour – to their own...

A Guest Contribution by Dan Bailey We photographers seem to have it easy. Whereas most artists spend anywhere from hours, to months to years to manufacture their creations, we can simply point, press and be done. However, that kind of convenience doesn’t necessarily translate into great imagery. Shooting powerful photos that have lasting visual appeal requires more than just pointing and clicking; it takes applying some fundamental compositional methods that are designed to simplify your compositions and actively engage your viewers. Here are five steps that...

Hi DPR, thanks for your review. People buy these things because there’s no alternative other than a bigger camera and a housing. I’d like to see a manufacturer opt for a new approach. Year after year your reviews (and others) comment on their small sensors and poor IQ. The internet is also littered with leak complaints and poor company response on guarantees. There seems to be a view that wilderness/outdoor/water sport followers don’t value better IQ, which is absolutely untrue. And that serious photographers should have a D4 in a housing. Try stuffing one of those in your...

I did more than blinking the images in my browser, I copied both into PS and compared them there. I then tried “boosting the saturation a bit” to try and get the same result. I’m positive there was more to it (and I’m not talking about the obvious brightness equalization he didn’t mention in the tutorial, that I can accept). I’m glad these processing techniques are trivial for you (really). Unfortunately, not all of us, me included, are as good as the professionals. If we knew how everything is done, we wouldn’t be here reading these tutorials. Which...

First, update the OMD, give it more, better features, focus peaking, get out of the 4/3 format, or, at least, put a second and third format beside of it. An OMD with FF, APSCn and 4/3, can do good, manual facilities with focus peaking, better EVF, and so on, and then, more weather sealed lenses for that body. And, then look at the pricing of the latest Pen, it is more expensive than Pana GX7, and has no VF at all. We must progress and have reasonable prices, the mass makes it, many cents make also big money, GOD and the Vatican show us the way, they get rich by earning billions of pennies a...

Backbone.js Tips And Patterns

Backbone.js is a popular open-source JavaScript “MV*†framework that has gained significant traction since its first release a little over three years ago. Although Backbone.js provides structure to JavaScript applications, it leaves a lot of design patterns and decisions up to the developer, for better or worse, and developers run into many common problems when they first begin developing in Backbone.js. Therefore, in this article, we’ll...

In our previous post on this topic we learned that the photo workshop is primarily a teaching venue, with a very structured curriculum leading to measureable outcomes. The keynote teacher and/or assistant instructors should be available upon demand and continuously be pushing, cajoling and exciting you to advance your skill set. The workshop is all about learning. The photo tour was borne as a hybrid from the conventional tour business that blossomed in the 1970’s.  While travelling tourists enjoyed the convenience of having another labour over the details of...

An article by +Sean Ogle Selecting a new DSLR can be really overwhelming, especially if you’re a first time buyer. Not only do you have to decide between brands, but then you have to decide between models, lenses, and accessories – all of which can lead to a daunting experience. That being said, the goal of this post is to help make that decision a little bit easier. Why Nikon? I’ve been shooting Nikon since I first got into DSLR photography about 5 years ago. When I bought my first camera (a D5000), the decision was a relatively simple one: my dad had some...

Over the past year or so we’ve come across stories about smartphone thieves inadvertently posting their images (including selfiies) online or, as in the case of a thief named Hafid, in a continuous stream, unaware that the phone was set to automatically upload images to Dropbox and then onto the owner’s computer desktop. The woman whose smartphone was stolen has kept a Tumblr blog with Hafid’s images and even a video of Hafid and his buddy wrestling (now set to the tune of Strauss’ Blue Danube Waltz). You can see more of Hafid’s images from the stolen...
