It’s been 4 years since I polled e-book purchasers and blog readers about their opinion on PDF e-book layout. And there’s been a lot of things happen in the world of e-books in the last 4 years, namely the rise of tablets. So the poll below is intended to help me understand how most people read PFRE PDF e-books. What made me realize this subject needs revisiting is the story that a purchaser of one of the PFRE e-books told me not  long ago. He said he was reading the e-book on his iPad in a public cafeteria during lunch and a lady nearby watching him read the e-book was making fun of...

The crazy bunch at Peak Design are at it again, this time with a version 2 release of their primary product, Capture GET CAPTURE v2.0 ON KICKSTARTER As of right now, 4,875 people have backed their current Kickstarter for over half a MILLION dollars!… Amazing crowd supported project! Well, being a Peak Design Pro, I’m very lucky to already be using Capture v2.0 and wanted to pen an article about it and how it has changed from version to version and how it could...

A Guest Contribution by Todd Sisson – author of our brand new Landscape Photography eBook (currently 33% off for 7 more days only). The majority of landscape images are photographed in the horizontal aspect. I guess this because the horizontal format approximates the way in which we perceive ‘reality.’ However landscapes look stunning in the vertical format and often the unique characteristics of the upright format suit a scene better than a horizontal* composition. I am guilty of undershooting verticals these days, primarily for commercial reasons, but in...

No location in Canada’s Ocean Playground is more quintessentially Nova Scotian than Peggy’s Cove. It’s all there: a lighthouse, pounding surf on large granite outcroppings and a tranquil working fishing community. And it’s only 50 kilometres from Halifax, the largest city in Atlantic Canada. Early spring is a great time to photograph one of the most photographed lighthouses in the world, should you want images without people in the picture The only land route to Peggy’s Cove is Highway 333, starting at Armdale, and then routes along to coast and...

A guest contribution by Misho Baranovic, co-developer of the Perspective Correct app and author of the iPhone Photography DPS eBook . I’ve read a lot of perspective correction articles over the past few days and my head is spinning from the technical explanations, illustrations and equations.   In this article, I’m going to keep it simple and talk about the role that perspective plays in photography.  What is Perspective? Perspective is one of the many ways that the human eye can judge depth within a scene.  Perspective is something that we can see with...

Regarding weather sealing, I’ve used a Canon Rebel, extensively, out in the rain with no problems. In fact, if you want to see what a lowly Canon Rebel can withstand, watch this torture test video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWzsXeXCwuc Yes, they poured two cups of hot tea on it, dropped a PC on it, burned it with a torch, mounted it onto a tripod then kicked a soccer ball at it…and it survived just fine. In fact, after all this abuse, then went out and took photos with it…on a rainy day, no less. And that’s with a cheap Rebel body! As for choosing the 70D...

A Journey Through Beautiful Typography In Web Design

First impressions are lasting impressions. Whether you realize it or not, your typography helps to create an experience for users before they’ve even read a word or clicked a button. Typography has the potential to go beyond merely telling a story — it shows the user who is behind the website and what you’re about. The treatment of type creates an atmosphere and elicits a response much the same way as tone of voice...

Last year we shared a behind the scenes video that showed some of what went into shooting this amazing ‘dust’ and ‘dance image’. Since then photographer Thomas David has shot another great series of dust photos – this series was shot outside and has more of a martial arts/fight theme. See the full series of images here on Flickr. And as with last time – here’s a behind the scenes video to show you a little more of how it was taken: Behind the Scene video for the “Dust and Fight†photoshoot from Tom on Vimeo. Back in January I did a post CamRanger just after I got mine. I have to say I’ve not come across any major issues with it. It has everything I expect in a wireless tethered device. I use mine with an iPad Mini for shooting time-lapse, macro and bracketing. What’s more, I’ve  heard pretty positive feedback from everyone that talks about CamRanger. Mike Kelley did a detailed review of the CamRanger in March and was very positive about it. Last week I talked to Melissa, co-creator of the CamRanger. Turns out she is a PFRE blog reader! Melissa was interested to get real estate...

Step one: surround them with kids or puppies or something so they relax and act normal.  Okay, fine.  That’s not always possible.  It’s hard to get your hands on a bunch of puppies for one.  It’s a little easier to find a bunch of children, but then there you are…… stuck with a bunch of children. Adults are so awkward in front of a camera.  It’s just so much PRESSURE.  To look GOOD.  And NORMAL.  I’m am one of the biggest offenders of this.  A running conversation with me while I’m getting my picture taken goes something like this: Is my...

I just came back from my holiday where I was shooting exclusively with this lens. I actually bought it for this holiday. Now, after converting from RAW and analysing several K of photos, I can confirm that 17mm is a bit more problematic than it was with original 17-70. However, I can clearly see field curvature effects here. Many shots are softer in the corners near infinity, but quite sharp in those corners with objects in the mid range. Soon, I found out that it gives better corner sharpness when I’d choose focus at infinity and stop down to f5.6 – f8 (I was accustomed...

The Web is evolving rapidly. Front-end Web development has been majorly affected by recent changes in coding techniques and approaches. In 2003, a competent front-end Web developer would have known HTML and CSS, possibly with a bit of copy-and-pasted JavaScript, and they built websites that would be viewed on desktop computers. Not so in 2013! Now, a competent front-end Web developer is well-versed in HTML and CSS,...

Scott Hargis sent me an example of two front exterior shots he did of a property he shot with different lenses and different POV that at first glance look the same, but on closer study show a completely different background. What’s going on here? Has he modified the background? I’ll let Scott explain: Back in April I shot “Before†photos of a really badly run-down house in Berkeley. The agent was putting a lot of money and effort into a facelift and wanted to document it with “before/after†photos. Recently I returned and made “beauty†shots of the finished, staged house. I...

There is a modern day aphorism: Those that can – do. Those that can’t – teach. I believe, however, the later part of the phrase should be amended to read “Those who can’t – shouldn’t.†A majority of photographers working today as professionals ply their trade in the commercial, wedding and portrait disciplines. There are also countless photographers who have historically made images of landscape and nature pictures – the kind of stuff we all love to do. These image makers would typically place their material with a stock photo agency to...

It is so stupid it is funny. But in a stupid type of way if you get my meaning. I hope someone at DPR is having a laugh so at least it is worth the effort. Hey guys how about a review of what is going on in various photography galleries in London, Boston, NYC, Paris, Moscow, Kabul, HK, Rio, Ankara,…………?? Most would rather read that than this fluffy dross, I hope.

The instant replay isn’t new. In fact, it can be argued that it’s the very reason why watching Football is America’s favorite Sunday night living room pastime. The implementation of 12 cameras in each end zone brings something new to your big screen TV this NFL season – a 360-degree instant replay. ...

The rise in popularity of digital cameras over the past decade has coincided with the emergence of a new genre of photography – long exposure photography. Long exposure photography involves using shutter speeds of anything from one second to five minutes or more while using a tripod to keep the camera still. The result is a landscape or architectural study characterised by still elements, such as rocks or a building, contrasting with moving elements, such as water or clouds in the sky. Most long exposure photographers use neutral density filters to obtain long...

By Ramsay Taplin Are you a photographer who dreams of taking your photography business to the next level? Well, one of the things that creative people (like artists, writers and, yes, photographers) forget is that you grow a business by marketing it – not necessarily by just being good at what you do. There are plenty of good photographers out there. So what’s the problem? Not all photography businesses have a huge budget to spend on marketing. And that’s where a blog comes into it. In this post I’m going to talk about how you can start a blog (or use an...

This last week Tom Tezak on Maui sent me his new Maui lifestyle video that Travis Rowan created for him. Tom says: …originally we made it for my trip to China for a trade show and we just modified it a bit to use as a lifestyle video. Travis took clips from several different projects to integrated both lifestyle and real estate together to get the viewer to imagine living the dream, (Travis even got a cameo surfing) in this enjoying the lifestyle and then finding the perfect property to make it happen from… it is a bit longer, but we designed it to be a looping video to run during...

Last week’s sunset/sunrise landscapes challenge was really popular with some beautiful images being submitted so we’re going to continue the ‘landscape’ theme going (to coincide with the launch of our Living Landscapes eBook) and this week are issuing the challenge of photographing a landscape image with ‘water’ in the scene. So this week we’d love to see some shots with rivers, lakes, oceans, streams and waterfalls (or anything else you can imagine up). The first page of our ‘photographing water’ section of the Living Landscapes eBook. Todd has...

Not every shoot I’ve done is full of lollipop promises, cute matching (but not too matching) outfits, and happy families throwing their kids up into a perfect blue sky with puffy cloud dreams.  In fact, typically the ones that didn’t, are among the most important pictures I have ever taken.  The ones that there are no road maps for, no instructions, and no cheat sheets.  Several years ago I photographed a beautiful wedding of a young couple deeply in love on a perfect July day.  I shot the wedding, went home, and put those images at the bottom of my...

The “Other†Interface: Atomic Design With Sass

As front-end developers and designers, we’re constantly refining two interfaces simultaneously: one for visitors who load the website, the other for developers who have to tackle the code in the future, when adjustments or full-scale redesigns must be made. Yet we tend to assign the role of “user†to the first group, often forgetting that the code we write must work for developers in a similar way. We shouldn’t forget that developers...

A Guest Post by David Powell from Shoot Tokyo Here are a few lessons I have learnt from daily shooting… I hope you enjoy. 1. “Do or Do Not…. There is no Try†A lot of people shoot daily as they are lucky enough to have a career in photography. Others embark on a 365 project while others just take photos all the time. I decided after I started ShootTokyo that I wanted to shoot daily as a way to try and rapidly improve my photography.  Shooting daily isn’t hard. It does require dedication, creatively and planning. It actually gets significantly easier...

If it looks like a DSLR, feels like a DSLR, works like a DSLR and takes pictures like a DSLR, it probably is a DSLR. Izznit? Nup. This ‘un is a MILC — mirrorless interchangeable lens camera … one of the many models now proliferating on the market like rabbits. In reality, the major difference between this MILC and true blood DSLRs is that, with the former, the top Live viewfinder presents an electronic view of the shot you’re about to fire, while the DSLR delivers an optical view, thanks to a prism and a series of mirrors …just like the ole time film...

On 07 June, when Santa Monica gunman John Zawahri went on a rampage, killing his father and brother before firing on three other people near a college, CrowdMedia – a new website whose task is to filter through images posted on Twitter – was coming online for the first time. “This happened within 15 minutes of our launch,†says CEO Martin Roldan. “We were able to get the licence for the only images shot from inside the college while it was happening. The photographs were picked up by a couple of news organisations, including the Huffington Post. It showed that CrowdMedia...

I have been shooting since about 8th grade in 1975, learned to develop and print B&W film as a Freshman, before I was out of High School I was developing E-6 slides, C-41 Negatives, making prints using Cibachrome, as well as prints from color negatives, I even used the Kodak Ektacolor (how many of you remember that system). While in High School, I worked on a farm, a grocery store, a newspaper (as a photographer), and a Camera Store/Studio. Instead of cars, my money went in to camera equipment, Nikon F, F2, FTN, lenses, Besseler 23CIII with Dichroic Color head and an analyzer. In...

In previous articles I wrote about the concept of balance in relation to the colours orange and blue, and in relation to composition in the square format. Today I think it will be interesting to explore the concept of balance in relation to photographic composition in more depth. Central composition This is a portrait that I created with a central composition. There are a couple of interesting things going on here. One is that the composition is virtually symmetrical. One half of the image is a mirror image of the other, with a few variations. In this case, that...

sensor sizes matter when you want real large sized billboard prints, then, they have the advantage to have lower noise at high iso rates, due to the larger pixel size. I doubt that a 48 mpix FF will make much better, or whorse, than an APSC 14 mpix, since on the end, both have the same pixelsize. Now, if I see a 20 mpix Samsung and the 36 mpix D800 in picture quality, in exception of the shallower DOF on one of the both, there is no reason to buy a D800 to make prints at 18×24 or 9×13 cm. If you want an example of if sensor size really matters, just go to Steve Huff’s...

Some PFRE readers may not realize what an essential step participating in a group like the PFRE flickr group is to learning real estate photography. You may think you are doing great but until you compare what you are doing to others in the business and get some peer review of your work you can’t be sure. Just today I saw a newbie getting an explanation of how important it is to have your verticals vertical. The vertical lecture seems to be a right of passage – at some point everyone needs it and eventually you need to give it to someone else! There are several steps to go through to...

A Guest Contribution by Todd Sisson – author of our brand new Landscape Photography eBook (currently 33% off). At this juncture, it is important to note that I avoid heavy thinking at all costs. Thinking truly is the hardest work, especially when you are attempting to simplify a process that is almost instinctual to you. However, my fear of hard thinking is eclipsed by my...

After our hands-on look at the Nokia Lumia 1020 last week, we were excited to spend a few days really shooting with the device. We’ve now had time to test out the Lumia 1020 in a wide array of lighting conditions and on an assortment of different subjects, and been able to more thoroughly explore the many settings available through the new Nokia Pro Cam capture app. Our gallery offers a look at the Lumia 1020’s abilities in low light, bright light and shade, and we used the manual controls in the Nokia Pro Cam app to adjust shutter speed, flash settings, white balance,...

Marc in Detroit was asking me today about doing 360s in general and about becoming a trusted photographer so he could do 360s for businesses to go on google maps. Here is what I told Marc: I would be careful about 360s...

This is a sumptuous book in a number of departments: it’s large, beautifully printed and full of useful, easily navigated information. So why the word ‘digital’ in the book’s title? Author Sint explains ‘I hate using Photoshop to correct my mistakes because I feel the time required to do so is both unproductive and unprofitable. … what I really love more than Photoshop is downloading pictures that I find pretty close to perfect the moment I open the image’s file.’ The book’s style is thoroughly disarming and direct to the point: when approaching...

Over the next week we’ll be featuring a mini-series of posts from Rachel Devine (author of our kids photography eBook) in which she’ll be talking about five reasons learning photography on film cameras made her the digital photographer that she is today. Here’s today’s on Busting the Burst Mode Myth. no burst mode here There are a few things I hear as top advice for budding children’s photographers and parents who want to take better photos of their children. I am proud owner of Fujifilm X100, and I am using it since last two years, I have a had privilege to use X100S for 15 days, and I really love this new X100S, I now do not like old X100. I have gone through with your review two times now and I am fully convinced, this is great review, it is deep review! Now I would like to let you know guys that, I am interested to use X100S’ video function, I really like videos created by X100S, yes of course we can not have videos like Panasonic GH2 (I own Panasonic GH2), but for me I found videos are not bad, it really produce decent videos. The cautious photographer is always conscious of what’s happening to their images when they’re being shared online — whether they’re being resized, recompressed or otherwise modified from the original. Social networks like Facebook and Twitter all treat their images differently, and to get the most of them, one must plan ahead to accommodate their various sizes and processes. It’d be a huge pain to collect and track all that information yourself — but luckily, LunaMetrics has done it for you! Their new massively useful cheat sheet shows the pixel dimensions...

All That Glitters Is Not Gold: A Common Misconception About Designing With Data

Too often when working in information design, you’ll hear the request, “Can you make the data look cool?†“Cool†is a rather ambiguous term, and means different things to different people. Unfortunately, when working with data, the term “cool†is often directly juxtaposed with common charts like line, bar and pie, which are often relegated to the backbench, and written off as “boring.†The...

Are SmartPhones Good Enough For Real Estate Photography Yet? July 28th, 2013 All the time I get requests to write a list of tips for real estate agents for taking better photos with their SmartPhones. A good photographer with good technique can make a beautiful photo regardless of the camera/gear but interior photography has a couple of unique challenges that SmartPhones still have trouble with: Wide-angle shots are problematic: Notice I didn’t say impossible. I know, there are clip on wide-angle lenses but these are all pretty bad quality (like the old screw-on wide-angle adapters for...

This image was made using a flash on camera, bounced into an uncoated muslin reflector. The uncoated muslin warms the light up about 400 degrees Kelvin. The reflector was positioned above and to the left of the camera, with the flash aimed into it. EOS-1D Mark IV, EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro. ISO 100, 1/250, f/4. This diagram shows the lighting for the image above. The uncoated muslin reflector is positioned above and to the left of the camera, with the flash bounced into it. Play with the angle of the reflector to get the lighting just right. Last week I wrote about...

In another article I wrote that one of the main attractions of the square format for me is composition. Today I’m going to elaborate on that idea. Composition in the square format is a different process than within a rectangular frame. The benefit of understanding of why that is so is that you will be able to apply the lessons learnt to improving the composition of your images in any aspect ratio. Even if you never intend to use it in earnest, it’s worthwhile playing around with the square format for this reason alone. Let’s take a look at some of these...

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of meeting the Digital Photography School headmaster, Darren Rowse, in person at a conference we both attended called the World Domination Summit in Portland, OR. The message of the conference (yes, the name invokes much curiosity) is simple: community, adventure, and service. It’s a large group of people that enjoy life, live adventures constantly and give back in service of others. That’s one of the reasons why I love writing on this site so much, I get to share my experience and knowledge and help you! Me and Darren...

Peter Stackpole was just 21 when he brought his Leica A to the top of the still-under-construction San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.
