5345 Indian River Road British Columbia by Jacob and Jaimie McNeil PlatinumHD Propvid Canada: In North Vancouver for Clive Benjafield and Steve Mitchell at Sotherby’s International in Vancouver, BC. I think Jacob and Jaimie have done a great job interviewing the current home owner and getting her to describe the artistic decorating and remodeling that she’s done. This kind of thing is harder than it looks and not every homeowner can do it. Notice the effectiveness of what appears to be UAV shots (but are actually full scale helicopter shots taken with the doors off) at the beginning of...

A Contribution by Mitchell Kanashkevich – author of Powerful Imagery. Quite often people have asked me: “What are the components of a powerful image?†I gave the question a lot of thought and decided that there’s so much in it that a whole eBook could be written on the topic, which is exactly what I did, with lots of practical examples to illustrate the points. This post is something of a sneak peak and an overview of some of the most important components that make up a powerful image. 1. Subject Most would agree that a powerful photograph needs a subject...

Mistakes I’ve Made (And Lessons Learned Along The Way)
By Jeremy Girard

We all make mistakes. Whether in our design and development work or just in life in general, we all do it. Thankfully, even the biggest mistakes carry valuable lessons. As a contrast to the many Web design articles that focus on successes and what we can learn from those triumphs, this article looks to the other end of the spectrum to explore what failures teach us. Along the way, I will share stories of some of the missteps I...

Sunsets are a huge draw for landscape photographers due to the unique light at the end of the day. Not only is the colour of the light attractive but also its low angle as the sun goes down gives greater texture to the landscape. Whilst the conditions at sunset have the potential to yield great images, they also provide challenges that need to be overcome to maximise that potential.  Here I want to share some tips and approaches for shooting landscapes at sunset. Camera Settings One thing I am often asked is “what settings should I use to photograph a...

I’ve had lots of experience with these mega zoom cameras: some enjoyable, some not so much. If you’re new to the field, approach them with caution: the zoom range is appealing, impressive and somewhat frustrating. For one, you simply cannot use them handheld at the full tele end: at best, use a tripod; at worst, lean them on something substantial, like a fence or a wall. If you’re crazy enough to want to shoot video with the zoom working mid shot … practice, practice. The HX50V initially surprised me: feels solid, pocketable, well-balanced in the hand,...

Personally, I still prefer the mirrorless, if nothing else b/c it *is* mirrorless. To me personally, the whole mirror contraption is pretty horse-and-buggy-ish, and I prefer the current EVFs to the OVFs, most especially on the lower-end dSLRs. Plus, for my needs (which of course aren’t everyone’s!), I’d rather have the slower focus from the sensor, than the faster focus from a completely separate system which is prone to back-focus, front-focus, all that. That is just me of course, and obviously a lot of people feel very differently about all this. To me, the...

Google debuted the second iteration of its popular Nexus 7 tablet today at a San Francisco press conference, inciting excitement amongst fans of the Android device and plenty of comparisons to Apple’s iPad mini. Of course we’re most interested in how this second-gen device might fit into a photographer’s workflow. First off, the 7-inch screen is sharper, making the new Nexus 7 an even better portable portfolio and image editing tool. The resolution is now 1920×1200 with a pixel density of 323 ppi (the old model was 1280×800 and 216ppi), which should let...

Funny, LOL; but couldn’t you buy a “gazillion”(tm) plastic fantastics; for the price of one of your “real” cams? I’m not saying, that you don’t have a good, quality-point; but wouldn’t the same, effective thing, happen to you, and if your camera fell into the creek? What if someone murdered you, for it’s cost? …..[Wait for it]….. LOL! Hmmm. I don’t even like Lomo (…very much. I can mess up my sharp shots. :0 ). Perhaps I should. Perhaps, “real” photographers need to work with a...

Automation is useful in the work of every designer. It saves precious time on repetitive tasks and helps us solve certain problems more quickly and easily. You can automate your workflow in Photoshop with actions, which are pretty popular and which most of you already know about and use. Today, we’ll introduce you to an advanced automation technique: scripting. All you need for this is basic knowledge of JavaScript, which some of us Web...

About a year ago when helping some good friends get some gear to get started in real estate photography the situation required used gear and the whole process made me more aware than I’ve ever been about the benefits of purchasing used gear. The benefits of buying used gear are bigger with DSLR bodies because they lose their value faster than lenses. Here are a a couple of examples that illustrate what I mean: New Canon Rebel Xti – $899 Used Canon Rebel Xti – $149 and up New Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM Lens – $429 Used Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM Lens – $375  and up...

Image created with Daylight to Sunset preset This post was written to coincide with my latest deal over at the DPS sister site – Snapndeals. Over the years I’ve created and stockpiled tons of presets in Lightroom, just for personal use. I finally made them available to the public earlier this year at the request of many of my blog readers and the feedback has been amazing! The collection on Snapndeals includes all of the presets I have released (80 total in 7 different groups) and they are all, of course, fully customizable. I put a ton of work into these and...

It takes a lot to hold my interest.  Scratch that—it takes a lot to get my interest, then hold it, and finally (and especially) to keep it.  This makes my dating life quite hard.  And sometimes my relationship with photography even harder.  And with less Happy Hours and coffee dates.  One bad shoot and I’m ready to sell my equipment and call it good.  And go work at Starbucks, where there are benefits and free coffee and cool mandatory aprons.  In my career that has spanned a decade, I have quit, retired, and ran away more times than Brett Farve....

The hype was high for Nokia’s second attempt at a 41-megapixel camera phone when it released the Lumia 1020 on July 11, the follow-up to last year’s 808 PureView phone. The basic imaging principles that set the 808 apart are again at work in the Lumia 1020. The device uses a 41MP imaging sensor to output maximum file sizes of 34MP to 38MP (depending on aspect ratio). The real value of such high pixel density lies in oversampling for a higher quality image output at more manageable files sizes. The Lumia 1020 allows you to simultaneously shoot both a full-resolution...

What does it take to craft a great product? For those of us who design and build apps, websites and software, a great product means one that delights its users. But digital product development is a complex beast. Delivering a successful product requires multidisciplinary teams to efficiently work through varying opinions and conflicting views and, ultimately, to gather behind a common vision with a focused plan. This is a challenging...

As I’ve begun teaching others how to edit their photos I’ve begun to realize that a lot of new photographers lack the confidence in their own work. I get questions like “Why don’t my photos look like this?†or “Should I buy a D800 so I can take better photos?†all the time and I’m starting to wonder if it’s simply because people don’t feel good about the work that they do create. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m my hardest critic, but I do always feel good about the photographs that I share, even if I wish I’d done something...

This article is written by Andrew S. Gibson, the author of Square, on sale now at Snap N Deals for a limited time. The square format seems to have gone in and out of fashion over the decades – and there’s no doubt that it’s currently experiencing a resurgence in popularity. This is at least partly due to the popularity of toy cameras like the Holga and smartphone apps like Instagram. But it’s also got a lot to do ease of access. With film cameras, cropping aside, the camera you purchased determined the aspect ratio you worked in. With digital cameras you...

The very RX100-esque compact offers the same 28-100mm equivalent Zeiss-branded zoom and 20MP 1″-type sensor as the Sony, but comes with a substantial hand-grip made from a choice of exotic materials and, we suspect, a significantly...

Simple Responsive Images With CSS Background Images

CSS, Media Queries, Responsive Design

With all the talk of new HTML5 standards such as the srcset attribute and <picture> element, as well as server-side techniques such as Responsive Web Design + Server Side Components (RESS), you’d be forgiven for concluding that simple, static websites can’t support responsive images today. That conclusion might be premature, however. In fact, there’s an easy, straightforward way to deliver responsive...

This weekend I’ve been thinking about the fact that every time there’s a new version of Lightroom I buy the updated version of Scott Kelby’s Lightroom for digital photographers book. As of right now you can purchase the Kindle version (which I did) but the hardcopy won’t be shipping until next Thursday, August 1 (you can preorder now). Scott’s Lightroom book is one of the few books that I always buy both the hard copy and the Kindle version. I purchase the hard copy because it’s such a great reference book for the application I use the most. Well, maybe I use my browser more than...

A contribution from Lori Peterson One of the most intimidating editing for some photographers is integrating textures. Textures can transform the mood and overall effect of an image. It can bring about a change that makes the image go from a nice photograph to a piece of fine art. There are an abundance of textures that can be found on the Internet and yet photographers are sometimes hesitant to use them because they feel overwhelmed or don’t understand that using them can actually be very simple. Once you get used to using textures you can usually decide what...

A contribution from Lori Peterson New photographers sometimes jump in and photograph everything they can. They will photograph a wedding one-day and commercial real estate on another. It isn’t until later on that they realize the importance of finding their niche and concentrating on the things that fuel their art and their passion and still manage to pay their bills. Life can bring you lessons you didn’t even know you needed to be taught. I have been present as a photographer in hospital situations and you have to expect the unexpected. Whether it’s...

The autumn foliage of Cape Breton Highlands National Park offers a more exciting colour palette than anywhere else in Canada, and quite possibly in North America. The best time to visit is immediately after Thanksgiving weekend in October. The holiday weekend itself can be nightmarish, with hordes of people and endless lines of tour buses. Restaurants are filled to capacity and accommodations are hard to find unless you have made reservations well in advance. On the Monday immediately following the holiday weekend, you will pretty much have the entire Highlands...

The lens is the ‘eye’ of the camera. The selected focal length and aperture determine the look of the photo. The lens you are using may also have other characteristics that contribute to the look. These influence your approach to composition. The idea is to work with the visual characteristics of the lens you are using rather than fight against them. Ask yourself how you can get the best out of the lens you are using. To start, you will need to understand why a telephoto lens is different from a wide-angle, and how depth-of-field is affected by aperture choice...

It’s not uncommon for photographers to feel much more at ease behind the camera rather than in front of it. Duo, a concept from Chin-Wei Liao, a Korean design school graduate, aims to transform the person behind the lens into photographer and subject simultaneously. Each half of the Duo is an individual camera....

Steamboat Springs Realtor Charlie Dresen showed me his latest video of a very special one-of-a-kind property in the heart of Old Town Steamboat Springs, Colorado. This is the second time Charlie has listed this property. We featured the lifestyle video that Charlie did for the original listing back in January of last year. I think this latest version with the builder narrating the video goes way beyond the original and is very successful at showing how special and unique this property is. Here is Charlie’s description: As a Realtor, I know firsthand that emotions play a huge role in...

This week your photographic challenge is to take and share an image that uses the compositional tool of ‘Leading Lines’ – as written about in our recent post How to Use Leading Lines for Better Compositions. This technique can be used in a variety of types of photography including landscapes, architectural photography, street photography and more. So read our leading lines post and head out with your camera to practice the technique. Once you’ve taken your ‘Leading Lines’ photos upload your best ones to your favourite photo sharing site either share a...

A post by Kaspars Grinvalds from Posing App. This is the third article in the series. You may want to look at the previous ones here: 7 standing poses [Part I] and 7 sitting poses [Part II]. Let’s move on with 7 lying down poses for women. And again I’ll briefly try to describe the process, how I tried to slightly adjust these poses in order to get three different photos for each pose. Pose 1 Very simple pose to start with. After getting the model into initial position, ask her to raise the upper body as high as she comfortably can. Photo 1: The first picture...

seilerbird666: I used my Nikonos under water some, and don’t remember having to grease the O ring every time. Yes it was something indicated by Nikon, but not an every roll of film or lens change thing. Many water tight flashlights use O rings. Now I’ve not used them under the water, but there many are rated for diving, in particular the ones sold under the name Princeton Tec in the USA. It would be better if the makers of these small tough cameras worked out a better sealing system. That includes making the bodies a bit thicker to allow for say 25 mm screw down ports–that size...

Rumor and tech sites have been buzzing about Sony’s upcoming smartphone, code-named Honami (possibly tagged Xperia i1). We reported on alleged photos of the device’s camera software here but recent rumors have shifted to the possibility that the new phone will be capable of working with an interchangeable lens that’s nothing like the mobile device add-on lenses we have now. As reported by SonyAlpha Rumors and PetaPixel, the lens will have its own sensor,  some sort of storage and communicate with smart-devices wirelessly and via NFC. A photo of the rumored lens...

“This Is How We Built It†Case Studies
By Melanie Lang

Unlike many other industries, the Web design community is all about sharing knowledge and experience. Each of us is very lucky to be part of such a great and useful learning environment, and it is up to us to embrace it — to embrace our learning experiences, and also to embrace our ability to share. Not only are case studies a great way to explain the design process of an agency, but they also help designers and developers to...

This shot was done using a tradition speedlight setup. I used 4 speedlights- two on the background with no modifiers, and two in softboxes on the subject. This is the lighting setup used for the first image above. Exposure was f/4, 1/250, ISO 400. The background lights were Canon 430 EX II speedlites, and the main and fill were 580 EX II speedlites. When shooting portraits, the very first decision I make is what look I’m going for. The answer to that question lies directly in how I want to light the scene. Generally, I want to evoke a mood or a feeling. Low...

Over the years I’ve owned a number of digicams just like this one and each has been damned useful. Pop in the pocket. Pull it out. Shoot. And enjoy. However, in the last 2-3 years they have become really fearsome beasts with tech specs that ring with power. Not only can these more recent arrivals shoot big, big stills but some have enormous zoom ranges and all can shoot Full HD video. So who needs a DSLR or a MILC? This little number from Panasonic is a good example of shooting power but with a certain finesse. Panasonic Lumix DMC-LF1 Features The lens in...

Yes, we understand the Web, but we don’t know how to write a document that is essentially a business strategy. What even goes into a digital strategy! A Guest Post by Todd Sisson from www.sisson.co.nz. As a landscape photographer I am constantly seeking that next X-factor shot – an image that leaps from the screen or page and demands the viewer’s attention – preferably attention of the favourable variety. If you spend an hour or two on a photosharing site like Flickr viewing landscape images in un- curated groups you will note that a very small percentage of the total image population stands out from the crowd. However, if you view a carefully curated collection of top-shelf landscape images you will...

A leading line paves an easy path for the eye to follow through different elements of a photo. Usually they start at the bottom of the frame and guide the eye upwards and inwards, from the foreground of the image to the background, typically leading toward the main subject. The easiest place to find a leading line is on a road. Roadways are inherently leading because they go somewhere, give us a feeling of motion, and the lines often point so far inwards that they reach a vanishing point – the place where two or more lines converge into theoretical infinity. The...

Tim Wilson pointed out this article to me from back in January of this year in TheRealDeal.com a New York real estate news site. The author, Andrew Klappholz,  says: In recent years, a new niche industry has exploded within the real estate industry: listing photography. With the advent of digital photography and growing international interest in New York City real estate, more and more brokers have turned to professionals to shoot their listings rather than taking the photos themselves. I found it very unusual that the article interviews the photographers, but doesn’t link to their...

A Guest Post by Oded Wagenstein Few months ago I visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. Upon arriving there, I immediately ran to see the work of the artist who influenced me the most: Vincent Van Gogh; the artist who changed the way we look at color as a tool for telling stories; an artist who had nothing in his pockets but had a never-ending passion for creativity and innovation. In this post I decided to share some work methods and tips that I have learned from the portraits of this great artist. Methods I TRY, just try, to apply in my work as well. 3...

Last weekend one of my photos was selected as a category winner in the national night sky photography competition, the David Malin Awards. The category was “People and Skyâ€, and Darren asked if I could write a post describing how the photo was created. I assist friend and colleague Phil Hart with regular night sky photography workshops under the beautiful dark skies of country Victoria (Australia). Knowing my love of fisheye photography, Phil had an idea for a photo to help promote the course: A group photo under the stars by fisheye lens. I immediately had a...

sorry I don’t know E-5. > You’re comparing the size and weight of a Canon f/4 lens to an Olympus f/2 lens. 28-70/2.8 (old versions from Canon and Nikon) can gather one stop more light than 14-35/2 and you can see this in the output image in one stop better SNR (shot noise) or +3dB at open and same shutter speed. the difference may not be exactly 3dB but that error comes mostly from sensor. 14-35/2 can do same as, better at corners than, 24-70/4 35-100/2 can do same as, worse resolution than, 70-200/4 neither of them AF well compared with Canon/Nikon lenses. 70-200/4...

Sensor maker Aptina says its Clarity+ system will allow 13MP smartphones that match the performance of 8MP models, as it gave more details of the new technology. The company uses clear pixels and some advanced image processing to offer improved sensitivity in both low-light and daylight situations. Sensors using clear pixels have been proposed before (including Sony’s announcement and then retraction of its plans to use clear pixels in its current generation of smartphone sensors), but Aptina says its combination of a new color filter pattern, redesigned microlenses and novel image...

The recently popularized “flat†interface style is not merely a trend. It is the manifestation of a desire for greater authenticity in design, a desire to curb visual excess and eliminate the fake and the superfluous. In creating new opportunities, technological progress sometimes leads to areas of excess. In the 19th century, mechanized mass production allowed for ornaments to be stamped out quickly and cheaply, leading to goods overdecorated with ornament. A...
