I would like to take you through a journey today and show you how some very ordinary looking photographs of the world around us can be combined to create some very interesting and one-of-a-kind pieces of art. Some might argue that what I’m doing is no longer considered photography, but I’d argue that everything presented within the final image was at one point captured using a camera, and therefore still falls under the category of photography albeit slightly manipulated. The world around us is filled with textures and abstract patterns that often go...

This article is written by Andrew S. Gibson, the author of Square, on sale now at Snap N Deals for a limited time. Today I’d like to draw your attention to an area of composition that you might not have given much thought to: aspect ratio. Aspect ratio is the term used to describe the dimensions of an image by comparing the width to the height and expressing it in ratio form. The aspect ratio of your images is primarily determined by the dimensions of your camera’s sensor (or the film type plus camera design with film cameras). As these physical aspects are...

Online product reviews are a huge part of our lives these days, and often, they’re the nearest thing we get to a ‘hands on experience’ before we buy something. Extremely positive or negative reviews can greatly alter the perception of a product in the mind of an undecided customer. So how do we know that the...

The Joy Of Illustrated Maps In The Era Of Google Earth
By Laura Coyle

In my career as a freelance illustrator, map-making has become a favorite specialty of mine. With each map assignment, I virtually travel across the globe, visiting places I’ve never been. Most recent was a “trip†to New Zealand for a sampling of local Wellington beer for Draft Magazine. My maps are designed to appear next to magazine stories about trips to faraway places, or about the best restaurants in a nearby...

Adobe PhotoShop Lightroom version 5 was released in June, and I’ve been digging into the new features. In this article I’ll share some tips for selective editing with the new Radial Filter tool. The Radial Filter allows you to draw an ellipse around an area of an image, and apply edits to the area outside or inside the ellipse. This is a great technique for highlighting portions of an image. Radial Filter Settings The Radial Filter tool in Lr 5 gives you the same set of standard adjustments as the Graduated Filter and Adjustment Brush. Note that this...

At the most basic level, all that you need to take landscape photographs is a camera and a location. One of the reasons that landscape photography is so popular is that it is so accessible, without the necessity for the newest camera bodies or most expensive lenses. You can pick up any entry-level DSLR and kit lens and be able to make great landscape images. However, there are a few extra tools that, if included in your camera bag, will help you improve your landscape photography in terms of both your technique and resulting images. Below is a selection of...

It’s time for DPR (and other camera review sites) to develop some standard terms and definitions when describing increasingly popular WiFi features in cameras. Too often phrases like “control the camera via WiFi” are used when you can’t control the camera via Wifi-all you can do is access one or two features like the zoom and the shutter release. Perhaps something like: WiFi File Transfer-you can move images from the camera to a smart phone, tablet or computer wirelessly. WiFI Remote Triggering-You can trip the shutter and access limited camera features via...

Nokia is already showing off the imaging capabilities of the Lumia 1020 smartphone it announced yesterday. The samples show off the photographic possibilities made possible by the device’s 41MP imaging sensor, an iteration of the groundbreaking technology the company debuted last year in the 808 PureView phone. While the 41MP spec and 34MP to 38MP maximum file output size (depending on aspect ratio) sounds impressive, the real value of such high pixel density lies in oversampling for a higher quality image output at more manageable files sizes. The Lumia 1020 allows you...

Allan MacKenzie just sent me a tease video edit of a gig that he shot a couple of months ago on Palawan Island in the Philippines. Apparently the same island that a season of American Survivor was shot on. The place is just amazing, the sunsets are incredible, and the people are friendly, I was actually surprised to meet American’s that have taken up residency there? On a recent outing to Yankee Stadium, the only lens I had on my 5D Mark III was the Canon 8-15mm fisheye zoom. I love a fisheye for a situation like this- great foreground, great sky, and an obvious subject. Most fans go to the game hoping to zoom in on their favorite player. Knowing I would never be close enough, I went the other direction and wanted to get everything. I used to think I’d never want to shoot with a fisheye lens. My objections were the same as most others who’ve ever shot with one: “All the shots end up looking the same,†or “there’s...

Our anticipation was building. Between defining our language translation app, sketching it out, obsessively designing and iterating, and juggling other projects — all covered in the first part of our case study — we had been working on Languages for close to a year. It was finally go time. Even the coolest app in the world is doomed to swiftly descend into the abyss of obscurity if no one knows about it. So, part two of our...

A Guest Post by Sergey Sus/ Photographers decide what is in the frame and what is not. We cant always control every single item the frame. We can however, control of position relative to the subject and when we press the shutter button. Here are 5 ways to to improve our photographs. Obvious Subject Our brains analyze what the eye sees instantly. The subject and story of a photograph must be identified quickly by the viewer. If the viewer cant figure out what the subject is…. all interest is lost. Brightest Our depth perception of a photograph creates a 3D...

In my last article I wrote about using colour boldly. Today I’m going to look at ways you can use colour in a much subtler, gentler fashion. Bold colours are most often found in man-made objects. If someone paints a wall bright red, for example, and you take a photo of it against a deep blue sky, then you are using colours that are just about as strong and deep as it is possible to get. In nature though, colours are often much more subtle. And there are ways that you can use the subtlety of colour found in nature to create photos that capture the mood of the...

A website has a personality — it is a reflection of the person or organization behind it. When people visit your website, you want it to stand out from the crowd, to be memorable. You want people to come back and use your website or get in touch with you. So, to distinguish itself from the unwashed masses, your website not only needs remarkable content, but also has to be innovative yet functional. Ask yourself, what would...

It’s been a month since Lightroom 5 was released and I have to say I really like this version! In previous versions of Lightroom my inclination was to take a round trip to Photoshop to straighten verticals that were any more than slightly out of vertical because I was just more comfortable with vertical straightening in Photoshop. But with Lightroom 5 I rarely leave Lightroom to straighten verticals! There are a few situations where Upright in the Lens Corrections panel gives unexpected results but for me it is fairly infrequently. There are only a couple of reasons now to leave Lightroom...

By Sean Ogle. HDR photography has gotten a bit of a bad reputation, simply because so many people don’t know how or when to use it. It kind of reminds me of my first experiences using Photoshop in high school. The only thing I knew how to do was open a photo, head to the filters, and create surreal, barely recognizable images. That’s what I see many photographers doing with HDR today. They open up Photomatix or HDR Efex Pro and start making photos that look overly processed, overly saturated, and basically just all around over done. Sure, there are people that...

Except that the 06 telephoto of the Q is constant F2.8, that I see you conveniently ignore. This means less ISO at the long tele photo and better DOF control than the P7700. You say there’s no advantage vs the G15, but you do mention right there that the Q lens is faster anyway, so there seems to be an advantage after all. Of course, you also have other options like a very cheap fish eye which none of the other cameras give you, custom F1.2 prime for the Q mount which none of the other options give you, or ability to use other lenses which none of the other options give you. And...

Every week I try to do one post that focuses on some aspect of the basics of getting started in real estate photography because it’s very clear from many of the questions I get that there is a bunch of people out there just starting at building a business as a real estate photographer. Over the years I’ve used a three mechanisms to collect posts on the the basics of getting started: The Real Estate Photography 101 category The Basics category The FAQ page I’ve realize that I’ve not been totally consistent in using these three things over the years. I’ve decided to update  the...

We all want to amaze our friends, family and hopefully even our raving fans with our photography, but in order to do so we need to first find out how to make our photos stand out – we need to harness the elusive “wow-factor†and have it help us define our style. Do You Shoot to Record a Moment In Time or to Tell A Story? This question is one you must ask yourself every time you pick up the camera. There are two types of photographs in my eyes - ones that record a moment in time and ones that tell a story. Each serve their purpose and I have nothing against...

Last month 14,002 readers responded to the question in our monthly poll which asked how many digital cameras they had owned. The results are in! It seems there was a fairly even spread among readers who have owned between 1-5 digital cameras – with 10-20% of respondents in each category. The interesting category to me was the 10+ category with just under 9% of our readers having owned more than 10 cameras! The comments that accompanied the original poll post showed that many of those who voted in this category reported having had significantly more than 10 too!...

So-called ‘blimp’ cases are designed to greatly reduce the sound of a camera’s shutter, making it safe to take record shots during filming for TV and movies. Typically, commercial blimp cases cost upwards of $1000, but pro photographer Dan Tabár made his own using a Pelican case, some ABS pipe fittings, a...

Retinize It: Free Photoshop Action For Slicing Graphics For HD Screens
By Artiom Dashinsky

High-definition (or “Retinaâ€) displays have spread wider and wider, and evidently their numbers will keep growing. So, as creators of products that will be consumed on Retina devices, we have to optimize our design and development workflow accordingly. Slicing graphics from finished designs to use for development is one of the less enjoyable parts of building a website or app. And it takes a long time. Because...

A recent article posted on realestate.com.au (the equivalent of the US Realtor.com) reported on a recent survey. Property photography company Top Snap asked 600 Australian real estate agents about how they market properties, and a whopping 99% said nothing beats good photography. As the article says: It’s something most of us know instinctively, whether we’ve been browsing for homes, proudly showing off our own for sale, or just admiring and dreaming. So what is it about Australian agents that they see the obvious and so many US agents don’t? There is little doubt in my mind that if...

By Kav Dadfar Some of my favourite landscapes to photograph are waterfalls. The smoothness of the water against the hard, sharp edges of the rocks or striking greenery that surrounds them can make for very pleasing compositions. Just follow these simple tips and you’ll be sure to get some great shots. 1. Time it Right The best time to photograph waterfalls is after rainfall. This make the waterfall flow in full force, and the rainwater also helps saturate the foliage in the trees or on the rocks which creates a beautiful luminous green colour. Mud can also get...

After I started my own critique forum I soon started to realize that composition is one of the most commonly critiqued parts of a photograph and in reality composition is the most important element of a photograph next to the subject. That said, what composition really comes down to, and what I’m talking about today, is the idea of composing with purpose. Compose With Purpose Not As an After Thought I’m not here today to tell you about the different “rules†of composition. I’m not going to tell you what is right and what is wrong, because ultimately, the...

@Tommygun – I don’t really see your point. When we get *pre-release* cameras, on the very rare occasions we’re allowed to actually shoot with them, we usually have an extremely short time available to us to do it. In the case of the RX100 II, I pretty much ran out of the office for a couple of hours one day before it started raining, took a few hurried shots that evening, and the next day the camera was in the studio all day, while we wrote the preview, and then the product was announced. This is the point – we do what we can to get pictures on the site for...

Smartphones have been crippling the digital point-and-shoot market for years. In May, global shipments of compact cameras by most major manufactures were down 48% from the year before while smartphone sales surged. In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Nikon president Makoto Kimura acknowledged the impact of smartphone photography and gave the public a hint of where Nikon may be going. “The number of people taking snapshots is exploding by use of smartphones that sold 750 million or so last year and are still growing,†Kimura told Bloomberg. “We’ve centralized our ideas...

I suppose this technology holds out the possibility of a future where everyman can be his own technological innovator, product designer and fabricator. “If you can imagine it, you can make it!” Wow. Then, I’m reminded of the wide variation people exhibit in matters of talent, technical savvy and, most of all, taste. After all, someone at some time thought the ’91 Chevy Caprice, Pontiac Aztek, Nissan Cube, Toyota Echo and VW Thing were really cool-looking vehicle designs. The mind boggles. Maybe this capability will work out well overall. I’m making a...

Choosing A Responsive Image Solution
By Sherri Alexander
July 8th, 2013
JQuery, Responsive Design, Strategy

If you code websites, it’s a good bet that at least one of your clients has asked about or requested a mobile-friendly website. If you go the responsive design route (whereby your website is flexible enough to adjust visually from mobile to desktop widths), then you’ll need a strategy to make images flexible, too — a responsive image solution. The basics are fairly simple to learn, but once you’ve mastered them, you’ll find...

A while back I did a post on Marc Angeles. in LA who had a YouTube video that had the video track shutdown because Marc had used some copyrighted audio (Marc has since replaced the track with some non-copyrighted music). J Miller raised the question, “how do you find legal music for videos Good question. YouTube has some automatic algorithm that is able to identify copyrighted audio. Don’t ask me how it works. I first encountered it a couple of years ago when I did a  YouTube video of my grandson’s first steps and used Fat’s Domino’s 60′s rock tune, “I’m walkin†as...

By Frank Wang One of the most retouching powerful tools in Photoshop is a relatively new feature called Puppet Warp. Introduced in Photoshop CS5, it can be extremely useful when you want to bend and shape parts of your image as if it were silly putty (or, as the name implies, like a puppet). I am going to give you a quick crash-course into how to make the most out of Puppet Warp. The first step to puppet-mastery is to isolate the object you want to warp. This often involves making a selection of the object and deleting the background. Assuming you are familiar...

This last week I heard from Sabrina Huang, an old friend I met at the workshop we held in April of 2008 in Seattle. Sabrina sent me a link to her latest video of a spacious home on the market in Los Gatos. Sabrina would like your gentle feedback on her video. I think she did a wonderful job on this property! My only feedback to her is I would have liked the closing shot of the fire by the side of the pool at the very end to be video rather than a still. It’s a great twilight shot but some how the flickering fire and shimmering pool would have been awesome in video. The workshop where I met...

About 5 seconds after I purchased my first professional camera, long before I hung a shingle or had any idea of what I was doing, the requests to shoot weddings came flooding in. Because let’s face it; someone’s always getting married. And your cousin’s dentist’s cleaning lady’s daughter would love a deal. And you are maybe just the photographer to give her one. There are thousands of opinions regarding if non-wedding photographers should ever even consider taking a stab at shooting a wedding– free, favor, or otherwise. For the purpose of this article...

Jeff, I have read and respected your reviews for years, so I am have difficulty reconciling two things: (A) the silver award and (B) “The OLED display on the AW110 looks great when you’re indoors. It’s bright, vibrant, and has a wide viewing angle. But, as mentioned above, the one on the back of the AW110 is nearly impossible to use outdoors, and not much better underwater, which is disappointing on a camera designed to be used in those situations. “ Where else would you use a rugged camera except outdoors or underwater? If you can’t see the display, in...

Shooting the pitcher from behind can give this kind of a dramatic shot. Using the continuous drive setting to shoot many frames throughout the motion will help you ensure that you get the best part of the motion. Baseball can be among the most maddening of sports to photograph. Entire games can be played with very little action at all, while other games will be chock full of great fielding plays and other images waiting to be captured. As with all sports, knowing the game is as important as knowing how to make a photo. Knowing what plays will happen on different...

In my previous article I explored some of the ways that you can use two contrasting colours, orange and blue, that appear in nature to create atmospheric images full of emotion. Today I’m going to look at ways you can use other bright colours effectively. Let’s start with a simple example. Flowers are a common, brightly coloured subject. If it is summer where you live right now you there may be public gardens close to you where you can practise taking photos like the one below. One of my favourite techniques is to photograph red flowers against a green...
