Tale Of A Top-10 App, Part 1: Idea And Design
By Jeremy Olson

My name is Jeremy Olson. I’m a senior in college, living in Charlotte, North Carolina, and this is the story of how my little app Languages beat Angry Birds. Large view. I’m writing this because I believe we learn much more from success than from failure. It took Edison thousands of failed attempts to invent the electric light bulb, and it would be foolish for us to reinvent it based on trial and error, now that we have a working model....

I wanted to bring up the PFRE Real Estate Photographer Directory again because back in mid-May when we launched this new version of the directory there were a few problems where directory registrations would not be successful if you ran into an error entering your data. We have that  fixed now so if you had troubles earlier you might try registering again. It’s working pretty well. Directory History Is User Driven Over the years the evolution of this directory has been user driven. The Directory is a way blog readers can benefit from the fact the PFRE blog has high google ranking for the...

HDR is an often discussed and debated subject in photography circles. There’s much talk about “bad†HDR, or a whether or not one should even do it in the first place. I think a lot of that stems from what I’d consider to be overdone, over-processed versions. IS MERGE TO 32-BIT A SOLUTION FOR BAD HDR? Depending on the software used to make your tone-mapped HDR images you may be given an option to view and/or save a 32-bit version. Prior to Lightroom 4 we there wasn’t really much we could do with such a file so most photographers never bothered saving it....

By Hélio Dias. I have lost count of how many times I’ve came home and regretted not having done something to get better pictures when I was traveling. Luckily, each time that happened I learned from my mistakes. Now I want to share them with you so you don’t need to learn the worst way. The tips apply for professional jobs and for your vacation pictures. 1. Make a List Search on the internet – Google, Flickr, 500px, etc. – for images of the places you are going to visit and have a first look on them. Pay attention to the light, the colors, the...

Davide Monteleone was selected as the Carmignac Gestion Photojournalism Award winner in 2012, but his name had been kept secret until today for security reasons, as the photographer produced an extensive body of work in Chechnya.
The photographer won a €50,000 grant, which will also finance the production of a book and exhibition of the work to be unveiled in October in Paris.
“Today Chechnya is an autonomous republic in the Russian Federation,” say the awards’ organisers. “Davide Monteleone went there very briefly for the first time in 2003 on a press...

Pentax Japan has unveiled a new colour variation of its Marc Newson-designed K-01 mirrorless camera, with a white body shell, blue grip covering, and black accents. There are no spec changes or updates compared to the existing K-01, which was announced early in 2012 and available in black, silver, or yellow. So the camera sports a...

This adapter is simply the inverse of a teleconverter. The DPReview writeup on the EOS-NEX version of this adapter was a hodgepodge of misinformation, and even got the definition of f-number wrong. This adapter simply decreases the focal length, and because f-number is defined as the ratio of focal length to aperture diameter, the f-number decreases by the same percentage as the decrease in focal length. The change in focal length nullifies the effect of the crop factor, when using a lens designed for FF, on APS-C. BUT, if you use this with a lens designed with expectation of the crop...

Building A Portable Design Toolkit

Inspiration, Techniques, Tools

It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the staggering array of resources and options available to designers. In this article, we’ll explore the idea of consciously restricting yourself to a set of core tools that you know, love and trust. Take a traditional craftsman — let’s say a carpenter. While they may have access to a wide range of tools in their workshop, they will take a bag with just a few carefully chosen tools when working away....

I heard from Cal Mitchener in Charlotte, NC  yesterday. First of all Cal reports that his years of hard work focusing on great customer service and quality work are paying off. He says his business is very successful, and he’s doing 3 to 5 shoots a day (shoots all day and does post all night). He no longer promotes his business yet, gets a continuous stream of direct referrals. He’s raised his prices this year and expects to raise them again at the end of the year. One thing that Cal was particularly excited about his new Gitzo Series 5 and how easy it lets him shoot elevated exterior...

For this image, I used a 4-stop hard-edged ND grad to hold back the sky. I also used a 5-stop ND filter to slow the exposure enough to get the water silky smooth. 6 seconds, f/16, ISO 100. EOS 5D Mark III with EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II. As I’ve written before, the hardest part of landscape photography is retaining detail in a bright sky with a darker foreground. There are several ways to deal with this issue. The newest ways involve various post-processing techniques in Photoshop or Lightroom, or using High Dynamic Range photography to blend several exposures...

A Guest Post by Sergey Sus/ Wanted to share a very simple way for improving a photo without having to change the exposure. I use this method quite often and sometimes even after adjusting exposure. The image is of a small hillside town in North California called Sausalito taken while on vacation. Here the SOOC (straight out of the camera) image before any adjustments are applied or any cropping. It is just a bit under exposed and very flat looking. Certainly there are many ways to brighten a photo in Photoshop like using Curves, Levels or Shadow layers. For this...

Well, what might be the “best” way to raise money for disaster relief? Challenge #1 is to get attention. Remember, the sea of potential donors will prefer the sensational, even the lurid, over the bland. Scenes of pain and destruction are the only plausible tools. An abstract or sermonizing plea is doomed. Attention-grabbers don’t necessarily raise money, but money won’t come without attention. Otherwise, how to explain the countless articles, stories, or pictures about certain social celebrities? Publishers and editors count the hits and conclude, correctly,...

Taming The Email Beast By Paul Boag July 2nd, 2013 Business, Useful, Workflow 5 Comments In the 1950s, when consumer electronics such as vacuum cleaners and washing machines emerged, there was a belief that household chores would be done in a fraction of the time. We know now it didn’t work out that way. Our definition of clean changed. Instead of wearing underwear for multiple days, we started using a fresh pair every day, and so the amount of washing required increased. In short, technology enabled us to do more, not less. Our work environments have followed a similar path. Tools such as...

We’ve posted about the remarkable story of Vivian Maier in the past here on dPS. Vivian was a nanny who worked in a number of families – none of which knew she had a secret life of a street photographer. Over the years she took over 100,000 images between the late 1940′s through to the 1990s – showing them to nobody but storing them in a storage locker which was only discovered after her death when the contents were auctioned without really knowing what treasure was in the negatives and slides in it. Her images have now been catalogued and a documentary is...

In two years’ time he will be able to resubmit his work to apply to become an associate member of the agency, for which he will have to receive a 66% majority vote. If successful he will then be able to apply for full membership in 2017.
A graduate of Ohio University, Brown has “over a six-month period in 2011,documented the face of battle...

@yabokkie – it’s still a 20mp sensor. No need for “those who have little knowledge of image sensor technology” to jump to the irrational conclusion that it’ll actually deliver 40mp of resolution. I’m sure that if the new sensor actually delivered abundantly more resolution, Canon would have gladly bragged about it. But clearly, it just means that two photodiodes are used to make a *single* pixel, and that the *dual pixel* phrase only refers to the two photodiodes being used for phase detection. In reality, a more apt phrase would have been...

Because: a) the RX100 and RX100 two are $700 and $800 cameras. Variety of price points is what makes the camera industry work. b) with cameras smaller doesn’t mean better, as to get the RX100 so small, Sony had to cripple it with a dog slow f/4.9 max aperture at 100mm. Which means the MX-1 actually has more shallow DOF than the RX100 at full tele, meaning for subject/background isolation, the MX-1 is actually more useful. c) the RX100 gets less than 1 EV better high ISO performance. The number of people who need their P&S to produce clean ISO 3200 images is much less than...

Last week I did a shoot for some home sellers on a semi-rural property in the mid- Willamette Valley and I made them a custom google map  that shows the property lines of their property. This can be a huge help when marketing properties where the property lines are not obvious like they are on most suburban lots. There are some locations where if you click on the Map button in the upper right of the Google Maps and toggle the map mode to non-satellite the property boundaries will actually show on the google map (this address is one of those locations – Google appears to have integrated...

Of cause these are the writer’s choices. It’s apparent he took at least one cam from every important brand. (Did I forget a brand?) Maybe two canons and two panasonics were taken because many people own those brands. Today, most new cams are worth their money. I feel happy there is the choice between so much of them. Everybody gets the cam which is made for him / his needs. Of cause, there are different opinions, what is good for someone. You can write your own opinion, but don’t blame the writer for his choice, please. Don’t take the world so serious....

Our goal here at dPS is to constantly be improving our site to make it more useful to our growing readership. As part of our efforts to make dPS more useful to you we’d love you to take 5 minutes to complete a quick reader survey that we’ve put together. As a little bonus incentive to participate we’re also going to give a prize of $1000 towards new camera gear, software or even a computer to one...

A Guest Post by Alex Morrison So, you’re thinking about unleashing your inner artist? Good for you! Old school photography can seem a bit limiting sometimes, with all those pesky rules – the rule of thirds, the rules of thumb, sunny 16 rule. Who needs rules! Your creative after all and we creatives are born to break the rules! Fine art photography is one of those photographic genres that defies rules, bends and breaks them and in the process of doing so the photographer creates art. A bad out of focus image of a flower could become your masterpiece; a mediocre...

In my experience, personal printing is a declining art. Walk through any retail photo dept and you’ll see hordes of people sitting at digital print stations pumping out bundles of 6×4 inch prints from their precious memory sticks and CDs. Many of these keen printers will be women, turning happy snap family digi shots into photo records, destined for albums. The Photographic Digital Printing book will be of no use to them… after all, those auto digi printers do a fine job! However, it’s the real, rusted on photographers who want quite a bit more from their...

A contribution from Lori Peterson Every day photographers use Facebook and other photo sharing websites, such as Instagram, for sharing images with their clients and potential customers. This ability to share has made it much easier to get instant feedback from the images that are posted and for photographers to see what their client base is actually looking for. Facebook has overwhelmingly provided photographers with a unique way of interacting with other photographers. Online photography forums and groups are plenty in the World Wide Web. Photographers can...

I am a Pentaxian fanboy through and through, but I say this in the most objective way possible: The best value for money DSLR’s/MILC’s under $1000 are the Pentax K-500 ($595 w/ 18-55 kit lens), Pentax K-50 ($696 body or $776 w/ Weather Resistant kit lens), Pentax K-5 ($500 used body – discontinued), with the number one spot for “best bang for your buck” across the photographic world given to the Pentax K-30 ($479 body) and the Pentax K-01 ($299 w/ 40mm pancake lens) despite what is undeniably a controversial body design for DSLR/Mirrorless, respectively....

But Old or new, getting hold of a quality digital camera still requires you to put down a decent chunk of change. In this article we’re going to look...

This week I want to point out one of my favorite classic real estate videos that Fred Light shot about a year ago.  Fred’s skill at shooting walk-through video coupled with the elegance of this grand old mansion built in 1798 (during the revolutionary war!) by William Bartlet, Newburyport’s wealthiest resident, makes this video very special. The narration, done mostly by Mr and Mrs home seller give this video a relaxed, personal feel. This video is one of my all time favorites, and since the fourth of July is next week, it seems like a fitting season to feature this video. It’s easy...

We’ve written many times about why we like 50mm lenses here on dPS (for example here, here and here) and every time we do we get a heap of readers telling us that they love them too. So this week your photographic challenge is to take and share an image taken with a 50mmm lens (or if you don’t have one – taken at around the 50mm mark on your zoom lens). Feel free to take any kind of photo – just make sure you’re shooting at 50mm! Once you’ve taken your 50mm photo upload it to your favourite photo sharing site either share a link to them even better –...

For the camera with so impressive set of features you’d expect someone at Olympus would finally decide to implement a proper water-sealing system at the hatches. These gaskets are simply too sensitive and unreliable. As always, it leaves an impression of purposefully created weak spot, which will never be covered by warranty. Also, Olympus (and others) could significantly reduce the possibility of water ingress by creating one single access hatch sealed by o-ring, instead of two, sealed with their funny gummy-things.Third, it is never wise to charge the battery within the sealed...

One of the principles behind using colour in photography is that of using contrasting colours. To understand the concept we need to look at a colour wheel – a type of diagram used by designers to show the relationships between colours: Diagram by Wikipedia contributor Jacobolus Contrasting colours are those that appear on opposite sides of the colour wheel. Today I’m going to look at two specific colours, orange and blue. Why these two? They happen to be very useful colours to work with because they appear a lot in nature (even though you might not be aware of...

We’ve all been there – your friend Carl is over by the fridge, getting some ice, and there you are with an expensive new Carl Zeiss lens, and you’re describing it to someone, and Carl keeps saying ‘What? What did you say? Do you want ice?’ It’s confusing. No wonder then that German lens...

How To Launch Anything By Nathan Barry June 28th, 2013 Business, Community, Useful 5 Comments Launching a new product — especially your first — can be incredibly daunting. Even knowing where to turn for help can be hard. So many blog posts are full of free advice on how to successfully launch that I almost didn’t write another one. But many of the posts I read for my first product launch didn’t help me very much. The material was too fluffy, the marketing ideas were vague, or the advice didn’t apply to my tiny business. Having launched five new products in fewer than nine months,...

My last article I went over 15 tips for successful fireworks photography. This week I’m following up with 5 tips for better parade photos. I figured it is the season for parades and they’re so much fun I want to give you a few quick tips to help you get more engaging, stunning photos at any parade. #1 Location, location, location Find a good spot by getting there early and checking out the parade route. This seems like a no-brainer, but the lighting can be tricky especially if you’re in a spot where the floats and people are half in the sun, and half in the...

“Created in 2009, the purpose of the Carmignac Gestion photojournalism award is to grant €50,000 in funding for a photo reportage carried out over a period of several months on a specific, topical subject,” say the organisers of one of the largest photojournalism grant programme. “With the profession in the grips of an unprecedented financing crisis, and the risks taken by freelance photographers the subject of much debate, the Carmignac Gestion Foundation wished to sponsor the delving work of photojournalists. Their dedication to depicting the truth requires knowledge of...
